- 0:00Did you ever have to yell this? What were you thinking?
- 0:04Well, if you did, what was the response?
- 0:08Odds are you just got a blank stare because they
- 0:13weren't thinking. Now, you may be dealing with a kid who's
- 0:17acting on impulse, or a teen who's acting on hormones,
- 0:20and if you've had to yell, what were you thinking? You probably shouldn't
- 0:25expect very much in reply. They're Kids who are growing,
- 0:28their brains haven't finished baking yet. They haven't fully come online.
- 0:32But what if the people you want to yell at, what were
- 0:36you thinking, were in fact Cardinals of the
- 0:40Catholic Church? What then? Stay with me, I've got a
- 0:43story to tell. Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTeague, your host here every day at
- 0:47The Catholic Current, coming to you from the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network.
- 0:51Let's take a closer look. Glad you're here.
- 0:55Recently, senior Catholic cadres of the People Who Should Really Know
- 0:58Better Club, people who were in fact Cardinals, made some statements that made
- 1:03me cry out from the bottom of my heart, what were you thinking?
- 1:07Now, a basic principle of management is that you praise in
- 1:10public and you correct in private. Now, what I'm hoping
- 1:15is that some other Cardinals will see this video, hear this podcast,
- 1:19read between the lines and sit down with their brothers in a
- 1:23spirit of fraternal charity.
- 1:26Let me give you the first case. A cardinal said that advocacy
- 1:30for immigrants is, in its truest sense,
- 1:33an act of divine worship.
- 1:37Now, English is my first language.
- 1:41I'm a native speaker. I recognize the words as English.
- 1:45I recognize the grammar as English, but as someone
- 1:49with more than a passing familiarity with philosophy, theology,
- 1:52and scripture, I don't see those words
- 1:57ever really making sense.
- 2:00And that's a problem. Another case to consider.
- 2:04Recently, a cardinal was talking about the Second Vatican Council
- 2:08and its relation to tradition. And in fact, on his
- 2:12view, the council is tradition.
- 2:16It is so much a reaching back to the very essence of tradition
- 2:20that now becomes tradition by which all
- 2:23tradition is judged. And by golly, there's a
- 2:27whole lot of continuity. And at the very
- 2:30same time, this cardinal says that
- 2:34traditional spirituality has been based on the image of Christ the
- 2:38King, whereas Vatican II presents and promotes
- 2:43Christ the servant. And these 2 are irreconcilable.
- 2:48Now, that may be a spirit of Vatican II
- 2:52reading rather than text of Vatican II.
- 2:56Excuse me. Lumen Gentium 36.
- 3:00I'm sorry, something got caught in my throat for a moment. I'm fine
- 3:04now. But here is what he's doing. He's saying,
- 3:07Vatican II is traditional. It's the reaching back
- 3:11to tradition. It is the tradition by which everything else must
- 3:14be judged. It is continuous. And we have an absolute
- 3:19irreconcilable paradigm shift from Christ the King to Christ
- 3:24the servant. Now, logically speaking,
- 3:27that's irrational.
- 3:32It violates the principle of non-contradiction. In the distance,
- 3:35I can see the ghost of Aristotle wagging his finger at at his
- 3:38eminence. Well, what are we to do? What's going on here?
- 3:42Well, we might turn first of all to G.K.
- 3:45Chesterton, who said what is commonly called modern thought
- 3:50might more correctly be called modern thoughtlessness. And this is
- 3:54what I think is happening with these 2 cardinals, a form
- 3:58of modern thoughtlessness, uh, poorly assisted
- 4:02by bad ghostwriters. See, they're talking about emotionally
- 4:06laden narratives, migrants in one case,
- 4:10the Second Vatican Council in the other. And as soon as you begin
- 4:13speaking on behalf of the narrative, which is
- 4:17so emotionally laden, reason,
- 4:20rationality, texts begin to
- 4:24recede to a very harmful degree.
- 4:28Well, what are we supposed to do about that? Well, we might
- 4:32nod and smile and say,
- 4:35yes, Your Eminence, while silently praying for immediate
- 4:40and dramatic divine intervention. But here I want to turn instead
- 4:44to C.S. Lewis, who said, and I, at any rate,
- 4:47don't propose to die with polite insincerities in
- 4:51my mouth. I believe that.
- 4:55And at the same time, I don't have the standing to correct a
- 4:58cardinal. Odds are most of you listening to me don't either,
- 5:02but surely other cardinals have the standing to correct
- 5:06a cardinal, to sit down with their brothers in a spirit of fraternal
- 5:10charity and offer some corrective advice.
- 5:15I ask the cardinals of the world to sit down with their brothers and say,
- 5:19please get better ghostwriters. Please think
- 5:23before you speak because you're causing confusion among
- 5:27the naive and scandal among those who
- 5:31are not naive. And what about the rest of us?
- 5:36Let's just get on with it and live our lives and conform
- 5:40to Christ. Meanwhile, think on these things today, take them
- 5:44to prayer, and talk about it with those you love. Go in peace, and please
- 5:47do pray for me, for I am a sinner.
