- 0:00Have you ever been around someone who has utter contempt
- 0:05and disregard for the Word of God?
- 0:09And that attitude came through loud and clear in
- 0:13how they interacted with you. Today we are going to look
- 0:17at a scene from Jeremiah chapter 36 where King Jehoiakim
- 0:22is listening and reading a scroll that
- 0:26Jeremiah has sent to him, and Baruch was
- 0:30the scribe. And as this scroll,
- 0:33the Word of God, is being read to the king, he cuts
- 0:38the scroll into pieces and throws it into the fire.
- 0:42Utter contempt and disregard for the Word of God.
- 0:46There are very severe consequences for this kind
- 0:50of a mindset. How does this apply today to the culture
- 0:54that we're living in? Listen in and find out.
- 1:00Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is October 20th.
- 1:04Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in one
- 1:08year. This week we are reading from the Israel Bible
- 1:11for the Old Testament and from the King James for the New Testament.
- 1:20Jeremiah 35:1-36,
- 1:2932. The word which came to Jeremiah from Hashem in
- 1:32the days of King Jehoiakim, son of Josiah of Judah: Go
- 1:37to the house of the Rechabites and speak to them and bring them
- 1:41to the house of Hashem, to one of the chambers, and give them wine to
- 1:45drink. So I took Jazaniah, son of Jeremiah, son of Habaziniah,
- 1:50and his brothers, all his sons, and the whole household of the Rechabites.
- 1:55And I brought them to the house of Hashem, to the chamber of the sons
- 1:59of Hanun son of Igladdiah, the man of Hashem,
- 2:02which is next to the chamber of the officials and above the chamber of
- 2:06Maaseiah son of Shallum, the guardian of the threshold.
- 2:10I set bowls full of wine and cups before the men of
- 2:14the house of the Rechabites and said to them, have some wine. They replied,
- 2:18We will not drink wine, for our ancestor Jonadab
- 2:21son of Rechab commanded us, You shall never drink
- 2:25wine, either you or your children, nor shall you build
- 2:29houses or sow fields or plant vineyards, nor shall you own such things,
- 2:33but you shall live in tents all your days, so that you may live
- 2:37long upon the land where you sojourn.
- 2:41And we have obeyed our ancestor Jonadab son
- 2:44of Rechab in all that he commanded us. We never drink wine,
- 2:48neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters.
- 2:52Nor do we build houses to live in, and we do not own vineyards or
- 2:56fields for sowing, but we live in tents.
- 3:00We have obeyed and done all that our ancestor Jonadab commanded
- 3:04us. But when King Nebuchadnezzar of
- 3:08Babylon invaded the country, we said, come,
- 3:11let us go into Jerusalem because of the army of the Chaldeans and
- 3:15the army of Aram. And so we are living in Jerusalem.
- 3:20Then the word of Hashem came to Jeremiah: Thus said the Lord
- 3:24of hosts, the God of Israel: Go say to the men of Judah and the
- 3:27inhabitants of Jerusalem: You can learn a lesson here about obeying
- 3:31My commands, declares Hashem. The commands of Jonadab
- 3:35son of Rechab have been fulfilled. He charged his children not
- 3:40to drink wine, and to this day they have not drunk. In obedience
- 3:44to the charge of their ancestor. But I spoke to you persistently,
- 3:47and you did not listen to me. I persistently
- 3:51sent you all my servants,
- 3:54the nevi'im, the prophets, to say, turn back, every one
- 3:58of you, from your wicked ways and mend your deeds. Do not
- 4:02follow other gods or serve them. Then you may
- 4:06remain on the land that I gave to you and your fathers. But you
- 4:10did not give ear or license.
- 4:14The family of Jonadab son of Rechab have indeed fulfilled the
- 4:18charge which their ancestor gave them, but this people has
- 4:22not listened to Me. Assuredly,
- 4:25thus said Hashem, the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:
- 4:30I am going to bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants
- 4:34of Jerusalem all the disaster with which I have threatened them.
- 4:37For I spoke to them, but they would not listen. I called to
- 4:41them, but they would not respond.
- 4:46And to the family of the Rechabites Jeremiah said,
- 4:49Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Because you have obeyed
- 4:53the charge of your ancestor Jonadab and kept all his commandments
- 4:58and done all that he enjoined upon you, assuredly thus says
- 5:01the Lord of hosts, Yahweh Tzevaot, the God of Israel.
- 5:05There shall never cease to be a man of the line of Jonadab
- 5:09son of Rechab standing before me.
- 5:15In the 4th year of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah,
- 5:19this word came to Jeremiah from Hashem: Get a
- 5:23scroll and write upon it all the words that I have spoken to you concerning
- 5:27Israel and Judah and all the nations. From the time I
- 5:31first spoke to you in the days of Josiah to this day.
- 5:36Perhaps when the House of Judah hears of all the disasters I
- 5:39intend to bring upon them, they will turn back from their wicked ways,
- 5:43and I will pardon their iniquity and their sin.
- 5:47So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote
- 5:51down in the scroll at Jeremiah's dictation all the
- 5:55words which Hashem had spoken to him. Jeremiah instructed
- 6:00Baruch, I am in hiding. I cannot go to the House of Hashem.
- 6:04But you go and read aloud the words of Hashem from the scroll which you
- 6:07wrote at my dictation to all the people in the House of
- 6:11Hashem on a fast day. Thus you will also
- 6:14be reading them to all the Judeans who come in from the towns.
- 6:19Perhaps their entreaty will be accepted by Hashem if they
- 6:23turn back from their wicked ways, for great is the anger and wrath
- 6:28with which Hashem has threatened this people. Baruch son
- 6:32of Neriah did just as the Navi Jeremiah had instructed him
- 6:35about reading the words of Hashem from the scroll in the House of Hashem.
- 6:40In the 9th month of the 5th year of King Jehoiakim son of
- 6:43Josiah of Yehudah, all the people in Jerusalem
- 6:48And all the people coming from Judah proclaimed a fast before Hashem
- 6:52in Jerusalem. It was then that Baruch,
- 6:56in the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper
- 7:01court near the New Gateway of the House of Hashem, read the words
- 7:05of Jeremiah from the scroll to all the people in the House of Hashem.
- 7:10Mekahuh son of Gemariah son of Shaphan heard
- 7:14all the words of Hashem read from the scroll. And he went down to
- 7:17the king's palace, to the chamber of the scribe. There he
- 7:21found all the officials in session: Elishama the scribe,
- 7:25Deliah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor,
- 7:29Gamariah son of Shaphan,
- 7:33Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.
- 7:38And Micaiah told them all that he had heard as Baruch read
- 7:42from the scroll in the hearing of the people. Then all the officials
- 7:46sent Yehudi son of Nethaniah son of Shelamiah son of
- 7:50Cushi to say to Baruch, Take that scroll from which you read
- 7:54to the people and come along. And Baruch took the scroll
- 7:58and came to them. They said, Sit down and read it to us. And Baruch
- 8:02read it to them. When they heard all these words, they turned to
- 8:05each other in fear, and they said to Baruch, We must report all this
- 8:09to the king. And they questioned Baruch further,
- 8:13Tell us how you wrote down all these words that he spoke. And he
- 8:17answered them, He himself recited all those words to me, and I would
- 8:21write them down in the scroll in ink. The officials said to Baruch,
- 8:25Go into hiding, you and Jeremiah. Let no man know where you
- 8:29are. And they went to the king in the court after leaving
- 8:32the scroll in the chamber of the scribe Elishama, and they
- 8:35reported all these matters to the king. The king sent
- 8:39Jehudi to get the scroll, and he fetched it from the chamber of the scribe
- 8:43Elishama. Jehudi read it to the king and to all the officials
- 8:47who were in attendance on the king. Since it was the 9th
- 8:50month, the king was sitting in the winter house with a fire burning in the
- 8:54brazier before him. And every
- 8:58time Jehudi read 3 or 4 columns, the king would
- 9:02cut it up with a scribe's knife and throw it into the fire in the
- 9:05brazier. Until the entire scroll was consumed by the fire
- 9:09in the brazier. Yet the king and all his courtiers
- 9:13who heard all these words showed no fear and did not tear
- 9:17their garments. Moreover, Elnathan,
- 9:20Delaiah, and Gemariah begged the king not to burn the scroll,
- 9:25but he would not listen to them.
- 9:29The king ordered Jeremiel the king's son and Seraiah
- 9:33son of Azriel and Shelamiah son of Abdiel to arrest the scribe
- 9:38Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah, but Hashem hid
- 9:42them. The word of Hashem came to Jeremiah after the
- 9:45king had burned the scroll containing the words that Baruch had written at
- 9:49Jeremiah's dictation: Get yourself another scroll and write upon
- 9:53it the same words that were in the first scroll that was
- 9:57burned by King Jehoiakim of Yehuda.
- 10:00And concerning King Jehoiakim of Yehuda, you shall say,
- 10:04thus said Hashem: You burned that scroll, saying, how dare
- 10:08you write in it that the king of Babylon will come and destroy
- 10:11this land and cause man and beast to cease from it? Assuredly,
- 10:16thus said Hashem concerning King Jehoiakim of Judah: He shall
- 10:20not have any of his line sitting on the throne of David, and his own
- 10:24corpse shall be left exposed to the heat by
- 10:28day and the cold by night. And I will punish him and his
- 10:32offspring and his courtiers for their iniquity.
- 10:35I will bring on them and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem and on all
- 10:39the men of Judah all the disasters of which I have
- 10:43warned them, but they would not listen. So Jeremiah
- 10:47got another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of
- 10:52Neriah, and at Jeremiah's dictation he wrote in it
- 10:56the whole text of the scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah had
- 11:00burned, and more of the like. Was added.
- 11:091 Timothy 5:1-25.
- 11:17Rebuke not an elder, but entreat him as a
- 11:21father, and the younger men as brethren, the elder women
- 11:24as mothers, the younger as sisters, with all purity.
- 11:28Honor widows that are widows indeed, But if any widow has
- 11:32children or nephews, let them learn first to show piety at
- 11:36home and to requite their parents, for that is good and acceptable
- 11:39before God. Now she that is a widow indeed and
- 11:43desolate trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers
- 11:47night and day. But she that lives in pleasure is
- 11:50dead while she lives. And these things give in charge that
- 11:55they may be blameless. But if any provide not for
- 11:59his own, and specifically for his own house,
- 12:03he has denied the faith and is worse than
- 12:06an infidel. Let not a widow be taken
- 12:10into the number under threescore years old, having been
- 12:13the wife of one man, well reported of for good works.
- 12:17If she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers,
- 12:21if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has relieved the
- 12:26afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.
- 12:30But the younger widows refuse, for when they have begun to wax wanton
- 12:34against Christ, they will marry, having damnation because
- 12:37they have cast off their first faith. And withal they learn
- 12:41to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle
- 12:45but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they
- 12:49ought not. I will therefore That the younger
- 12:53women marry, bear children, guide the house, and give no
- 12:57occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
- 13:01For some are already turned aside after Satan.
- 13:05If any man or woman that believes has widows, let them
- 13:09relieve them, and let not the church be charged, that it may relieve
- 13:13them that are widows indeed. Let the elders that
- 13:16rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they
- 13:21who labor in the word and doctrine. But the Scripture says, you shall
- 13:25not muzzle the ox that treads out the corn, and the laborer is
- 13:28worthy of his reward. Against an elder receive
- 13:32not an accusation but before 2 or 3 witnesses.
- 13:37Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may
- 13:41fear. I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect
- 13:45angels that you observe these things without preferring one
- 13:48before another, doing nothing by partiality.
- 13:52Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of
- 13:57other men's sins. Keep yourself pure.
- 14:00Drink no longer water, but use a little wine
- 14:04for your stomach's sake and your often infirmities.
- 14:09Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to
- 14:13judgment, and some men they follow after. Likewise also
- 14:17the good works of some are manifest beforehand, and they that
- 14:21otherwise cannot be hid.
- 14:27Psalm 89:14-37.
- 14:31Justice and judgment are the habitation of Your throne; mercy
- 14:36and truth shall go before Your face. Blessed is the
- 14:39people that know the joyful sound; they shall walk, O LORD, in the
- 14:43light of Your countenance. In Your name
- 14:47shall they rejoice all the day, and in Your righteousness shall they be exalted.
- 14:51For You are the glory of their strength, and in Your favor our horns
- 14:56shall be exalted. For the Lord is our defense,
- 14:59and the Holy One of Israel is our King.
- 15:02Even You spoke in vision to Your Holy One and said,
- 15:06I have laid help upon one that is mighty. I have
- 15:09exalted one chosen out of the people. I have
- 15:13found David My servant; with My holy oil have I anointed him.
- 15:17With whom My hand shall be established; My arm also shall
- 15:21strengthen him. The enemy shall not exact
- 15:25upon him, nor the son of wickedness afflict him. And I will
- 15:28beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate
- 15:32him. But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him,
- 15:35and in My name shall his horn be exalted. I will
- 15:40set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.
- 15:44He shall cry to Me, You are my Father, my God, and the
- 15:48Rock of my salvation. Also I will make him My
- 15:52firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. My mercy will I
- 15:56keep for him forevermore, and My covenant shall stand fast with
- 16:00him. His seed also will I make to endure forever,
- 16:04and his throne as the days of heaven.
- 16:07If his children forsake My Law, and walk not in
- 16:11My judgments, if they break My statutes and
- 16:14keep not My commandments, then will I
- 16:17visit their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with
- 16:21stripes. Nevertheless, My lovingkindness will
- 16:25I not utterly take from him, nor suffer My faithfulness
- 16:29to fail. My covenant will I not break, nor alter
- 16:33the thing that is gone out of My lips. Once I have sworn by
- 16:37My holiness that I will not lie to David, his seed
- 16:41shall endure forever, and his throne as the sun before
- 16:45Me. It shall be established forever as the moon and
- 16:49as a faithful witness in the heavens.
- 16:52Selah. Proverbs 25:25-27.
- 17:00As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news
- 17:04from a far country. A righteous man falling
- 17:08down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain and a
- 17:12corrupt spring. It is not good to eat much honey,
- 17:15so for men to search their own glory is not
- 17:20glory. 4,
- 17:233, 2, 1. I want to speak to you
- 17:27today from our reading from Jeremiah chapter 36,
- 17:30and in this chapter we see a scene that's quite shocking.
- 17:35And what happens is, um,
- 17:38Jeremiah has written down the word of the Lord on a scroll,
- 17:42or actually Baruch, his scribe, has written down
- 17:46the words that Jeremiah has told him to write.
- 17:50And then this scroll ends up in the hands of the
- 17:54king. In verse 22, it says, since it was the 9th month,
- 17:57the king was sitting in the winter house with the fire burning in
- 18:00the brazier, the fireplace, before him. The Israel Bible
- 18:04Commentary to this verse reads as follows: The dramatic
- 18:08showdown between the Word of God as dictated to Baruch by Jeremiah
- 18:12and the unrepentant Jehoiakim takes place in the king's
- 18:16winter palace. The 9th month on the Hebrew calendar is
- 18:20the month of Kislev, and that usually occurs
- 18:24in the month of December, and this is in the dead
- 18:28of winter. Kislev can be a very cold, bitter month with fierce rains and
- 18:31snow. The aristocracy and the wealthy class could
- 18:35afford to build winter homes heated by coal stoves.
- 18:39In this fire, Jehoiakim mockingly burns Jeremiah's scroll,
- 18:43sealing his own fate. Ruins of a palace found
- 18:48in Ramat Rachel in southeast Jerusalem have been identified
- 18:53as the winter palace of Jehoiakim. But here's
- 18:57the point that I want to make. This king had utter
- 19:01contempt and disregard for the
- 19:05Word of God, and in a mocking fashion,
- 19:08he actually burns up the scroll and
- 19:12throws it into the fireplace. Have you ever been in a
- 19:16situation like that where there was just utter mocking
- 19:21and disregard for the Word of God?
- 19:25We live in a culture that defies the
- 19:28truth of the Word of God. We've been reading many
- 19:32verses in Jeremiah in the last several days that
- 19:36talks about how God would scatter the Jewish people to all the nations
- 19:40as a judgment for their sin and idolatry,
- 19:44but He's also promised them a light at the end of the tunnel that
- 19:48though they've been scattered to all the nations of the world, that they
- 19:52would be regathered back to the land of Israel.
- 19:56And in fact, we have seen that happen in our lifetimes.
- 19:59On May 14th, 1948, the Jewish
- 20:03nation was reborn and reestablished, and the Jewish people
- 20:07were able to make Aliyah and return to the land of Israel.
- 20:11And yet, similar to King Jehoiachin's
- 20:16utter contempt and disregard for the Word of God and
- 20:20burning it up in the fireplace. We have pro-Hamas protesters
- 20:25who chant in the streets of London and Paris and Sydney,
- 20:29Australia, and throughout the Middle East, and even in Israel
- 20:32and Jerusalem, from the river to the sea,
- 20:35Palestine will be free. Well, basically what that chant
- 20:39is saying is Israel should be erased. There should
- 20:43be no more Israel. All the Jews would
- 20:47be in the sea, and there would be no more Israel, and Palestine
- 20:51would replace Israel. The Palestinians are
- 20:55not interested in a 2-state solution. They want a 1-state
- 20:59solution, and the 1 state that they want is Palestine, and there would be no
- 21:03more Israel. This is utter contempt and
- 21:08mockery for the Word of God because the Word
- 21:11of God, we've read the verses yesterday, that Israel will
- 21:17last as long as there are stars shining in the sky,
- 21:21as long as the moon is doing its orbit,
- 21:24as long as the sun shines in the sky. That's how long Israel
- 21:29will exist as a nation. Well, that means forever.
- 21:33These ordinances of the sun and the moon and the stars are eternal,
- 21:37and the nation of Israel is And
- 21:41so when people come against that and say Israel should be erased,
- 21:45Israel should be no more, they are like this King Jehoiakim
- 21:49in utter disregard and utter contempt for
- 21:53what the Word of God says. That's all I have for today,
- 21:57and we'll see you tomorrow. Shalom.
