- 0:18Speaker 1: Return to Glory podcast September twenty fifth. Hunters are Nikki
- 0:24Speaker 1: Austin Rose to go to free tag. It's per due week,
- 0:29Speaker 1: bounce back week after the loss to Illinois last Friday,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and an opponent. I'm gonna say it that feels beatable?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Is that all you want to leave that at Hunter.
- 0:48Speaker 3: For right now?
- 0:52Speaker 4: Right now?
- 0:53Speaker 1: Yes? I know the Husker fans emotions have been all
- 0:59Speaker 1: over the place since the Friday loss, including ours beating
- 1:06Speaker 1: ourselves up, probably for getting our hopes up like we
- 1:09Speaker 1: do every year. But we're here and with three and one.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I first want to start off the top. Did any
- 1:17Speaker 1: of you guys think that we would go seven and oh?
- 1:20Speaker 1: I truly believe it.
- 1:24Speaker 5: If Yeah, I thought we were going to go seven
- 1:27Speaker 5: and five on the year, so.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Maybe eight and four.
- 1:32Speaker 5: So I definitely I didn't think we're gonna go seven
- 1:35Speaker 5: and oh you're gonna drop one?
- 1:38Speaker 6: Are you talking about before the season or coming into
- 1:41Speaker 6: the game, I mean any oh? Yeah, yeah, I thought
- 1:49Speaker 6: I thought going into the gear for the card you would.
- 1:51Speaker 6: But also the other teams are playing now are better
- 1:54Speaker 6: when I thought, not saying this team you play this
- 1:57Speaker 6: week there worse than I thought.
- 1:58Speaker 3: But the other teams are better.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Well, look at you, dak Be in the aggressive seven
- 2:05Speaker 1: and oh, I think that was It's been thrown out
- 2:08Speaker 1: there obviously by a lot of people. I just don't
- 2:12Speaker 1: know that many actually truly thought, like, you know, given
- 2:17Speaker 1: free money, you would put your money on us going
- 2:20Speaker 1: seven and o versus anything other than that.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Like, I don't know.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I think that was fun to believe and think about,
- 2:28Speaker 1: but I don't know I ever got myself there so
- 2:30Speaker 1: to that point, and I think the mindset with the
- 2:34Speaker 1: team we have to kind of not reset completely but believe,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you know, this is still a good football team. And
- 2:41Speaker 1: just because we lost one game, and we can say
- 2:45Speaker 1: the word if this happened, if this happened all we want,
- 2:48Speaker 1: But just because we lost one game doesn't make us
- 2:51Speaker 1: now a horrible football team. That's where I just don't
- 2:55Speaker 1: know where to sit anymore. Because we have a game
- 2:57Speaker 1: this week against Purdue, who I think we all kind
- 3:03Speaker 1: of thought maybe produced really bad and we're in that
- 3:05Speaker 1: next tier, but it's still a big ten game and
- 3:09Speaker 1: they're not an FCS school, they're not UTEP. We got
- 3:15Speaker 1: to show up and play and play well, and I
- 3:19Speaker 1: don't think we'll overlook them.
- 3:20Speaker 4: But it's our first road game to the first road
- 3:22Speaker 4: game for Dylan Royola.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So I think that's the first thing I wanted to
- 3:26Speaker 1: mention was that just think big picture. I did not
- 3:30Speaker 1: think we were going seven to zero. I don't think
- 3:33Speaker 1: many people really believed it. I think a lot of
- 3:36Speaker 1: people maybe thought six and one or five and two
- 3:38Speaker 1: is feasible, that's still attainable. And these teams that we
- 3:40Speaker 1: play coming up, some of them maybe are a little
- 3:44Speaker 1: bit better Indiana Rutgers than.
- 3:46Speaker 4: What we might have thought that.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It's not like they're top fifteen teams, right, They're going
- 3:52Speaker 1: to be games that if we play well, we'll beat them.
- 3:58Speaker 7: Yeah. I think having said it on it for several days,
- 4:03Speaker 7: I feel better about.
- 4:06Speaker 5: Like we look back at the Illinois game, it's like,
- 4:09Speaker 5: you can clearly see where we.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Left points on the table, but we put ourselves in
- 4:13Speaker 2: position to leave points on the table.
- 4:16Speaker 7: Not that that's a good thing, but it's like, Okay,
- 4:19Speaker 7: we're not it's not doing gloom, Like you're right, we're a.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Good football team.
- 4:23Speaker 3: We're not great.
- 4:24Speaker 2: We're not a winning football team to an extent. I
- 4:27Speaker 2: mean we are three to one, But.
- 4:30Speaker 7: I feel better about the team today that I did Sunday,
- 4:34Speaker 7: but I felt pretty bad about the team Sunday following Friday.
- 4:41Speaker 6: Now, I could have looked this up, but I feel
- 4:43Speaker 6: like at Purdue has been a house of hohoores for
- 4:46Speaker 6: you guys, and you in the Big Ten, I don't
- 4:48Speaker 6: I don't know what the record is.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I should have looked up, but I feel like a
- 4:52Speaker 3: lot of.
- 4:52Speaker 7: Big Ten games in the last five years, so Ford
- 4:55Speaker 7: is on that list.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I'm one of my road wins is at Purdue, I
- 4:59Speaker 1: think back in twenty seventeen.
- 5:01Speaker 4: But it has not been great.
- 5:03Speaker 1: We have lost four of our last six games to Purdue,
- 5:08Speaker 1: so it's it's not it's not a team that we've
- 5:11Speaker 1: just handled. But like Austin said, no one has. So
- 5:14Speaker 1: I heard this too, and I think it's worth talking
- 5:16Speaker 1: about here. We talk about other teams, and I think
- 5:20Speaker 1: everybody has in the Big Ten teams specifically in our minds,
- 5:25Speaker 1: the games that you know you should win or winnable games,
- 5:28Speaker 1: the games that are gonna be a little tougher, you
- 5:30Speaker 1: kind of tear it out in your in your mind.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I mean, I think Purdue is one of those teams
- 5:34Speaker 1: in the bottom tier of However, many teams you want
- 5:37Speaker 1: to put in there, four or five six teams? How
- 5:41Speaker 1: do other teams of you Nebraska.
- 5:46Speaker 4: The Big Ten?
- 5:47Speaker 1: And I think there's a lot that goes into this
- 5:49Speaker 1: because we do, obviously have a history, and I do
- 5:53Speaker 1: think that teams probably had a little bit of a
- 5:57Speaker 1: chip on their shoulder because of that history when they
- 5:59Speaker 1: played us. But over the last ten to fifteen years, like,
- 6:02Speaker 1: do other teams look at us as a I mean,
- 6:05Speaker 1: record wise, we are like one of the bottom, if
- 6:07Speaker 1: not at the bottom of the Big Ten.
- 6:14Speaker 7: Our talking from the team perspective or fan based perspective,
- 6:17Speaker 7: because I definitely think fans think of us as like
- 6:19Speaker 7: an easy win.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I guess a little bit of both.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I think obviously, with good coaching, you know, you can
- 6:27Speaker 1: frame players' minds to treat every game one game at
- 6:30Speaker 1: a time and every opponent's good. But I mean, even
- 6:33Speaker 1: even thinking about players right, like, you can't tell me
- 6:36Speaker 1: that our players are looking at or thinking about Purdue
- 6:39Speaker 1: different differently than if we were be playing Ohio State
- 6:41Speaker 1: this weekend. Like there's definitely a clear separation pier wise
- 6:45Speaker 1: of what you think the other team has. And I
- 6:48Speaker 1: mean I think Perdue is while they are still I
- 6:51Speaker 1: think gonna be tough.
- 6:52Speaker 4: I don't think we're gonna blow them out. Hint for
- 6:54Speaker 4: my prediction.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I don't think you're gonna roll them on on Saturday.
- 6:59Speaker 1: But I think that we just kind of us a
- 7:00Speaker 1: Purdue as a team like we should be beating every year.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And I'm just I'm wondering, what do you think Purdue
- 7:06Speaker 1: fans feel about Nebraska, especially since they one four of
- 7:09Speaker 1: the last six.
- 7:14Speaker 5: M We should have asked our resident Purdue fan.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I I think.
- 7:23Speaker 6: A lot of big team Big Ten teams right now
- 7:25Speaker 6: fans go on their schedule, nay count Nebraska is a win.
- 7:30Speaker 3: I'm not like the middle of the road teams.
- 7:32Speaker 6: I would say, obviously, O Howse State, Michigan, Penn State,
- 7:37Speaker 6: USC organ all accounta as wins. But I think I
- 7:39Speaker 6: think Purdue right not this year, but normally just chocked
- 7:43Speaker 6: it up as a win on their schedule because you guys,
- 7:45Speaker 6: they have to beat you guys so much as you've
- 7:47Speaker 6: been in the Big Ten.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Like I completely agree.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I I truly think that we sometimes view ourselves, and
- 7:58Speaker 1: I say we seeking from a general fan perspective, as
- 8:04Speaker 1: maybe a little bit higher.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Than some of these teams.
- 8:07Speaker 1: But like, when it comes down to it, we are
- 8:10Speaker 1: in the tier with not with Iowa and Wisconsin.
- 8:14Speaker 4: As much as we want to say, maybe.
- 8:15Speaker 1: We're there, And I'm just speaking from the last five
- 8:18Speaker 1: to ten years, like we are with the Marylands, the Indianas,
- 8:21Speaker 1: the Northwesterns produce Rutgers. That's where we're at. And I
- 8:29Speaker 1: think other fans probably think of us that way a
- 8:31Speaker 1: little bit too. And anytime that we that's kind of
- 8:36Speaker 1: the laughing stock of anytime we think that we're better.
- 8:38Speaker 3: You know.
- 8:38Speaker 1: You hear someone say Nebraska's going to be seven, No,
- 8:40Speaker 1: They're like, yeah.
- 8:44Speaker 6: I mean, I mean, let's just be real about Nebraska
- 8:47Speaker 6: has been one of the worst Big Ten teams since
- 8:48Speaker 6: they've joined it, one of the worst teams in the conference.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean yeah, I think early on we were
- 8:58Speaker 1: you know, we've made a conference time game, right, Like yeah,
- 9:02Speaker 1: but I say post Northwestern, ID say post Bopolini.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, Well, I don't thinking about this hundred It
- 9:14Speaker 2: makes me sad.
- 9:14Speaker 4: It just it puts everything into perspective a little bit.
- 9:17Speaker 7: I think.
- 9:17Speaker 1: So, Okay, rules press conference Monday a couple of weeks ago,
- 9:23Speaker 1: after beat Colorado, he mentioned that we are a winning
- 9:26Speaker 1: football team, and now we are on the way to
- 9:28Speaker 1: becoming a championship football team. I thought at the time
- 9:33Speaker 1: it sounded cool he we jumped the gun a little bit.
- 9:37Speaker 1: And now we're back to talking about how to get
- 9:39Speaker 1: guys to win, and specifically in one score games, things.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Aren't going well. Matt rule is one in seven, one
- 9:47Speaker 4: in six, one and seven.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Now this team is only on one, though.
- 9:50Speaker 4: This team's own one.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Obviously, we know what's happened in the past couple of years.
- 9:56Speaker 1: We've seem to find every possible way to lose, and
- 10:03Speaker 1: we could go through every scenario, and then the next
- 10:06Speaker 1: week a new scenario comes up and we found a
- 10:08Speaker 1: way to lose. And I think a lot of things
- 10:10Speaker 1: last year under our new coaching staff, we thought, all right,
- 10:14Speaker 1: let's get a quarterback. If we get a quarterback, that's
- 10:18Speaker 1: going to fix a lot of things.
- 10:19Speaker 4: And it has.
- 10:22Speaker 1: But now the thing that we thought was maybe fixed
- 10:27Speaker 1: and moving in the right direction or defense, you could
- 10:30Speaker 1: argue they were the reason why we lost on Friday. Obviously,
- 10:36Speaker 1: special teams, so we don't need to go down that path.
- 10:40Speaker 1: But we've lost in a billion different ways, and a
- 10:42Speaker 1: lot of them have been by one score obviously over time.
- 10:46Speaker 1: I think the word that was used was debacle by
- 10:50Speaker 1: the coaching staff. So oh, and last thing A real
- 10:55Speaker 1: said about the winning you called it, you know, the
- 10:58Speaker 1: chicken in the egg? What comes first? How do you
- 10:59Speaker 1: teach guys to win when they've never won?
- 11:02Speaker 3: You know?
- 11:02Speaker 1: He talks a lot about the younger guys how they
- 11:06Speaker 1: don't really you know, know, like obviously Dylan Freshman. But
- 11:10Speaker 1: the older guys when they game gets tight, they get tight,
- 11:13Speaker 1: pressure gets built up and we end up losing the game.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Whereas the younger guys are playing more free flowing, they
- 11:20Speaker 1: don't really have that pressure. But the ones that have
- 11:22Speaker 1: been through it and been through it a lot, it's
- 11:26Speaker 1: affecting the outcome of a game like that. And I
- 11:29Speaker 1: think the question is how do you fix it? Right,
- 11:32Speaker 1: We've identified the problem, We've seen all of the how
- 11:37Speaker 1: to lose one score games? Right, the question is how
- 11:43Speaker 1: do you fix it and move past it? And I
- 11:46Speaker 1: am sure coach rule staff like they are probably experimenting
- 11:53Speaker 1: with a one hundred different things right to fix that.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I'm sure Scott Frost had his methods and approaches. I
- 12:03Speaker 1: don't know there's a right answer. I don't know that
- 12:06Speaker 1: there's a wrong answer at this point because we probably
- 12:08Speaker 1: tried about everything so eventually we think that it should flip.
- 12:15Speaker 1: But I don't think we've ever actually asked a question
- 12:17Speaker 1: amongst ourselves and talked about it, like, if you are
- 12:19Speaker 1: the head coach at Nebraska or on the coaching staff,
- 12:23Speaker 1: what specifically are you doing and teaching the players on
- 12:27Speaker 1: how to win one score games?
- 12:31Speaker 4: And we're gonna discuss this here and give our ideas.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Dak, you just look like the next Joe Paterno.
- 12:38Speaker 4: You got it all.
- 12:39Speaker 3: I thought about this all day.
- 12:42Speaker 6: I honestly couldn't think about how the coach the play
- 12:45Speaker 6: because I think it comes down to coaching.
- 12:47Speaker 4: That's the dice.
- 12:50Speaker 3: More I know. Anyway, Yeah, you guys go first.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Your first. That's why I went to you. Okay, Bell
- 12:57Speaker 4: Brush is the huff.
- 12:58Speaker 6: Okay, I think I think one of the main things
- 13:03Speaker 6: you probably gotta do is conditioning.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I mean, there's gotta be a reason why these teams
- 13:09Speaker 3: beat you in the end. They gotta have more.
- 13:11Speaker 6: You gotta think that they can last longer, and you
- 13:13Speaker 6: guys can it during the game, have more stamina to
- 13:16Speaker 6: go up through the other game like you guys just die,
- 13:17Speaker 6: must die out at the end. Something's going on there
- 13:20Speaker 6: where you can't close out games. The next one is
- 13:25Speaker 6: which this is this on coaching. I guess they gotta
- 13:30Speaker 6: know how to coach.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Stop stop.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Well he's coaching. You are the coach. That's what we're saying.
- 13:34Speaker 1: You're the coach, and all I'm saying everything kind of
- 13:37Speaker 1: falls back.
- 13:38Speaker 4: If you're the coach.
- 13:38Speaker 2: You're fixing it.
- 13:39Speaker 5: So yes, what is your to fix?
- 13:41Speaker 4: Okay, you're playing as the coach.
- 13:43Speaker 6: To fix it, you go find a heal. You make
- 13:46Speaker 6: those players run a thousand times up there.
- 13:47Speaker 3: That's first time.
- 13:51Speaker 6: Second off, you grab, you grab your kickers. You make
- 13:54Speaker 6: those guys kick for seven days straight. Don't let him
- 13:57Speaker 6: sleep at all until you make a kick, because that's
- 13:59Speaker 6: what schames come down to.
- 14:00Speaker 3: A lot of special teams.
- 14:03Speaker 6: I mean, other than that, on turnovers, you sit there
- 14:08Speaker 6: and have guys just punch at your running backs all
- 14:09Speaker 6: day long so they don't fallow or anything.
- 14:12Speaker 3: There you go, Gus, that is there.
- 14:16Speaker 4: There we go. Let's just let's fast that on to
- 14:19Speaker 4: the coaching staff.
- 14:20Speaker 1: So what's interesting is you actually you called out three
- 14:24Speaker 1: things that I would call the the physical part of
- 14:27Speaker 1: the game.
- 14:29Speaker 2: I mean kicking.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I think there's you can talk about the mental side there,
- 14:33Speaker 1: but like conditioning, I'm not gonna say I disagree with you, but.
- 14:40Speaker 4: This makes me laugh. That's definitely a physical thing.
- 14:44Speaker 1: And then like fumbling and turnovers, like yes, like that
- 14:47Speaker 1: is something we've talked about at lengths.
- 14:50Speaker 4: You've gave that solution before of just punching at the ball.
- 14:54Speaker 4: I love it.
- 14:56Speaker 3: That's changed.
- 14:57Speaker 1: We did win the turnover battle, and we've been doing
- 15:00Speaker 1: well at that this year.
- 15:01Speaker 5: So I will say we're plus five plus four this
- 15:03Speaker 5: year or something.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Like that, so we were doing well there. The kicking
- 15:09Speaker 1: thing goes and fits right into this.
- 15:12Speaker 4: And I heard this and I like it.
- 15:15Speaker 1: A kicker, a good kicker, probably wins you one and
- 15:17Speaker 1: a half to two games in the Big Ten last year.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Probably would have could have, could have, would have should have.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Won us more.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Brett Maher is on the staff now, has been, I
- 15:28Speaker 1: guess for about a month.
- 15:31Speaker 7: I'm surprised that this is the first. I hadn't heard
- 15:33Speaker 7: of it until the press conference this week.
- 15:36Speaker 4: No one has and.
- 15:37Speaker 3: I was I was thinking about this.
- 15:40Speaker 6: When was the last kicker you guys had that He
- 15:43Speaker 6: went out there and you were trusted he's gonna make
- 15:44Speaker 6: a field goal.
- 15:45Speaker 5: We had the big ten kicker of the year, what
- 15:47Speaker 5: four years ago?
- 15:50Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that was one year.
- 15:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Outside of that one year, it's been it's been bad
- 15:59Speaker 1: and it's I mean almost to the point that it's
- 16:00Speaker 1: just it's ridiculous, Like what do you do? I think
- 16:03Speaker 1: getting someone like that on staff could help. I think
- 16:05Speaker 1: people are blowing a out of proportion and how much
- 16:07Speaker 1: it could help. I think a lot of it is mental,
- 16:10Speaker 1: and I think that needs to get figured out. I
- 16:15Speaker 1: thought I thought it was interesting. Rule mentioned.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Performance coach.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Mentality, Yeah, mentality coach.
- 16:23Speaker 4: I'm like, that's interesting, Like I kind of.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Like Scott Scott, the Russell Wilson, Pete Carroll approach.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Yep, like a psychologist sitting there picking your brains.
- 16:32Speaker 6: I thought that means, I mean, that kick to that
- 16:36Speaker 6: guy trying in Illinois looked like if I was trying
- 16:38Speaker 6: to seven iron, it's going hund fifty yards right.
- 16:40Speaker 3: That kick was not even close.
- 16:42Speaker 1: You do not hit a seven iron hundred and fifty
- 16:44Speaker 1: yards right. You don't hit it that far. Don't even
- 16:50Speaker 1: try to think.
- 16:54Speaker 3: They love shot, and.
- 16:58Speaker 4: You also don't hit it right.
- 17:01Speaker 6: Let either way, I'm shanking it whatever direction I'm shaking,
- 17:04Speaker 6: and that dude shank that ball.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Austin, I want to hear your thoughts, like, if you
- 17:10Speaker 1: were the coach, well, give me a little bit of
- 17:12Speaker 1: Bill Belichick, maybe a little bit of Nick Saban dabbo
- 17:15Speaker 1: twist in there. What what are what are you doing
- 17:19Speaker 1: specifically to help us get over this one score game
- 17:22Speaker 1: hump that we just can't seem to get over.
- 17:24Speaker 5: White Dak, I also chewed on the spur.
- 17:28Speaker 2: You said this yesterday and.
- 17:29Speaker 7: That was I thought about it last night, I thought
- 17:31Speaker 7: about today, and honestly.
- 17:34Speaker 5: I think the mentality coach is something I would do
- 17:36Speaker 5: at that level.
- 17:38Speaker 7: I definitely think there's something to the uh mentally putting
- 17:43Speaker 7: yourself in those situations and executing.
- 17:44Speaker 2: In your brain over and over and eventually that can
- 17:47Speaker 2: lead to be forwards on the field.
- 17:51Speaker 5: I said it that.
- 17:51Speaker 7: I mean, your best chance is to create some sort
- 17:54Speaker 7: of high pressure situation and practice, and I don't know
- 17:57Speaker 7: what the best way to do that is without completely.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Just ruining morale.
- 18:02Speaker 7: Whether it's throw your kicker out there, hey you hit
- 18:06Speaker 7: this kick, or you hit X number of these field
- 18:09Speaker 7: goals on your way back, or if you don't hit
- 18:14Speaker 7: these number of field goals.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Your team has to run something like that.
- 18:18Speaker 7: I don't know, having to create fake pressure, but I
- 18:22Speaker 7: think that's how you have to do as far as
- 18:23Speaker 7: the kicking game goes. For the team execution, I think
- 18:28Speaker 7: you just have to be for a couple of years,
- 18:34Speaker 7: just be brutal about execution. If you don't execute, you
- 18:37Speaker 7: get pulled. Just being willing to put out people out
- 18:40Speaker 7: there who aren't your best talent. Just be like, all right,
- 18:42Speaker 7: we're gonna lose this game. We're gonna lose with someone
- 18:44Speaker 7: who's actually doing their job right. You might not be
- 18:49Speaker 7: the fastest or biggest, but he's not getting a.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Holding coll or brumbling the ball.
- 18:54Speaker 5: I think that's it. And honestly, rules kind of doing
- 18:56Speaker 5: all of that.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Which makes sense. You get paid, just paid a ton
- 19:00Speaker 2: of money to come up with these coaching things to
- 19:03Speaker 2: solve the problem that we're talking about.
- 19:06Speaker 5: I don't disagree with Dak.
- 19:08Speaker 7: I do think conditioning is just being bigger and stronger
- 19:10Speaker 7: and at the end of the game being able to
- 19:12Speaker 7: not have to hold because you're getting blown blown by
- 19:15Speaker 7: on the offensive line.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Think they argue that you have talent, right, you can
- 19:25Speaker 1: make that argument that we have the talent to win
- 19:29Speaker 1: these games.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Because we're there.
- 19:33Speaker 5: That's why you drink that argument is we're in the game.
- 19:36Speaker 2: That's why you know it's not a talent thing.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Before you go on. I think which I don't know.
- 19:41Speaker 6: I think me and Austin probably both sentenced for a while,
- 19:44Speaker 6: is because this loss was different than your one score
- 19:47Speaker 6: losses from the years before.
- 19:48Speaker 3: There wasn't turnovers, there wasn't so this one was deep.
- 19:51Speaker 5: Like there's a miskick.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that was good point too, And I mean the.
- 19:56Speaker 5: Press conference, R'll talked about kicking for a long time because.
- 20:00Speaker 7: He's like, it should be this hard to find a kicker,
- 20:04Speaker 7: is essentially what he said without saying it.
- 20:07Speaker 3: That wasn't why he lost the game though, I mean,
- 20:09Speaker 3: definitely helped.
- 20:10Speaker 7: But yes, the special teams all day it was bad
- 20:14Speaker 7: and other things were bad too, But you can easily
- 20:17Speaker 7: point to you gotta hit the thirty eight yard field goal, yep,
- 20:21Speaker 7: with three minutes left in the game.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Yeah, he made an interesting point. That is why rule
- 20:29Speaker 4: it gets paid the big bucks.
- 20:30Speaker 1: That's why Scott Frost got paid the big bucks, like
- 20:32Speaker 1: it is their job to fix it. And yeah, it
- 20:38Speaker 1: was a different way of losing and uncharacteristic of what
- 20:42Speaker 1: we saw at least last year. And like I said,
- 20:45Speaker 1: a lot of it probably could be on our defense,
- 20:48Speaker 1: and it sounds like our defense is pretty upset. They're
- 20:53Speaker 1: playing with the chip on their shoulder this week is
- 20:55Speaker 1: the language that I've been hearing. So that's a good sign.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Hopefully we see it come out on Saturday against Purdue,
- 21:05Speaker 1: because I have a feeling Purdue is going to have
- 21:10Speaker 1: a very determined, run heavy mindset and we better be
- 21:16Speaker 1: ready to go otherwise we're gonna get in the dog
- 21:18Speaker 1: fight again and another one score game, and we have
- 21:21Speaker 1: to find a way to win one of those.
- 21:23Speaker 4: That's exactly what Rule said.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Like if you don't know how to win them, and
- 21:27Speaker 1: you haven't done it, and you haven't felt it what
- 21:29Speaker 1: it's like to win one of those, and you really
- 21:31Speaker 1: don't know how to do it. So that's the big
- 21:34Speaker 1: solution we're trying to figure out here. So one of mine,
- 21:38Speaker 1: I have four things minor. I mean, your guys are very.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Generic.
- 21:43Speaker 1: I would that's say generic, but might maybe even more
- 21:45Speaker 1: generic in some senses. Austin, you touched on one of mine,
- 21:50Speaker 1: Extreme pressure with consequences and I don't I've never coached football.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I don't know how practices are organized. But whatever drills
- 22:01Speaker 1: we're doing and team stuff, individual stuff, group stuff, situational stuff,
- 22:08Speaker 1: I'm sure a lot of that goes on in practice.
- 22:11Speaker 1: There has to be extreme pressure with consequences, and sometimes
- 22:15Speaker 1: consequences doesn't have to be running stars. I mean it
- 22:18Speaker 1: can be, but you have to know and understand your
- 22:20Speaker 1: players what matters to them, and you have you just
- 22:27Speaker 1: have to continue to pile it on. And I'm sure
- 22:28Speaker 1: there's I'm sure there are stuff like this.
- 22:33Speaker 4: A is going on constantly too.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I'm not saying that we're not doing that, but I
- 22:37Speaker 1: think that that needs to be emphasized that situational football,
- 22:42Speaker 1: there just needs to be extreme pressure. Second thing, everything
- 22:49Speaker 1: in practice must have a winner and a loser, and
- 22:52Speaker 1: you must celebrate the winners and losers must hate it
- 22:58Speaker 1: and make them hate losing and it's not acceptable.
- 23:01Speaker 4: And then the winners should be able to celebrate. And
- 23:03Speaker 4: this can be anything from a.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Very little tiny drill, but you must make winners and losers.
- 23:08Speaker 4: And there's a.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Clear line like if you don't do something exactly right,
- 23:12Speaker 1: you're gonna lose, whether it be a head to head
- 23:14Speaker 1: Oklahoma drill Right. No matter how physical you are, there's
- 23:19Speaker 1: a winner and a loser, and everything needs to be
- 23:23Speaker 1: to find that way in practice, even in film session,
- 23:25Speaker 1: you're either winning this film session or you're losing this
- 23:27Speaker 1: film session, right, And how do you win this film session?
- 23:30Speaker 1: Where are the steps you need to take to get
- 23:32Speaker 1: yourself to win this film session when you're in there
- 23:35Speaker 1: studying a game that you you know of yourself or
- 23:38Speaker 1: of another team.
- 23:39Speaker 4: So that's that's the second thing.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Third thing, and this is generic generic coach speak, but
- 23:47Speaker 1: I think it's important. I think we're probably doing this
- 23:50Speaker 1: to some extent, especially this week.
- 23:52Speaker 4: But practices have to be so.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Much harder than games as far as the environment that
- 23:58Speaker 1: you're playing in, the conditioning that you're doing, the situations
- 24:02Speaker 1: that you're doing. Hell, sometimes throw thirteen guys out there
- 24:05Speaker 1: on defense and you have to drive down with two
- 24:09Speaker 1: minutes to go offense and you have two extra defenders
- 24:12Speaker 1: out there good luck, like make it so much harder
- 24:16Speaker 1: for a unit to perform. So that way, when you
- 24:21Speaker 1: get to a game and there's there is an added pressure,
- 24:24Speaker 1: you say, oh, I've done this before with two extra
- 24:25Speaker 1: defenders out there, or yeah, we were down one offensive lineman.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Now I know is scheming and stuff. It might not
- 24:31Speaker 4: work exactly that.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Way, but I do think that if you are practicing
- 24:36Speaker 1: harder and making things tough right, situational football is going
- 24:41Speaker 1: to seem a lot easier. And that's a lot of
- 24:42Speaker 1: times that this comes down to, we've had good drives, right,
- 24:45Speaker 1: We've had good both offensively and defensively. My last big
- 24:50Speaker 1: thing in this kind of could lands at everything. We
- 24:52Speaker 1: will not win one score games until we start to
- 24:54Speaker 1: have player led leadership and really it's off of the
- 25:00Speaker 1: his hands and the coaches aren't doing the work anymore.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Once the team transforms into that, and I think you'll
- 25:05Speaker 1: probably hear coaches talk about that like saying that it
- 25:09Speaker 1: is I mean to an extent, maybe, But until the
- 25:13Speaker 1: players are truly leading each other and there's that level
- 25:15Speaker 1: of expectation from each other that we are not losing
- 25:19Speaker 1: this game and everybody knows that, there's no doubt. You think,
- 25:24Speaker 1: you think you have, you have a little bit of
- 25:25Speaker 1: sense of doubt in your mind. You see someone pouting
- 25:27Speaker 1: after a drop ball, uh huh. The players know how
- 25:32Speaker 1: to pick each other up and get the mindset of
- 25:35Speaker 1: we're not losing this game, and then ultimately by the
- 25:37Speaker 1: time of the game, end of the game comes, you
- 25:39Speaker 1: have more points than the other team. I think the
- 25:42Speaker 1: key step to that is getting Riyola to that point
- 25:45Speaker 1: as the quarterback. There's the problem right now, a lot
- 25:48Speaker 1: of our leaders who are they defense they're defensive guys,
- 25:54Speaker 1: but they're older guys and they been through these one
- 26:01Speaker 1: score losses, So it is hard for if they can't
- 26:04Speaker 1: believe it and see it and say nope, we're winning
- 26:07Speaker 1: every game and have that mindset of it's just not happening,
- 26:10Speaker 1: then it's gonna be hard for everybody else to fall
- 26:12Speaker 1: a suit. So I think some younger guys are going
- 26:15Speaker 1: to step up in that leadership from a mentality standpoint,
- 26:18Speaker 1: not necessarily maybe you know, being named a captain by
- 26:22Speaker 1: any means, but like Dylan, eventually I think this year
- 26:27Speaker 1: could get to a point where he is has the
- 26:29Speaker 1: ability to.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Bark orders where needed and you know.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Get on his offensive line and say no, like you
- 26:37Speaker 1: guys are gonna have the best series of your of
- 26:40Speaker 1: the season right now because we're down three and we
- 26:42Speaker 1: need to go down and score a touchdown here with
- 26:44Speaker 1: four minutes left, and you're gonna do it right now.
- 26:46Speaker 1: I don't know that Dylan even should have been doing
- 26:50Speaker 1: that right away. It's hard to do that you're new freshman,
- 26:52Speaker 1: true freshman. But I think he can involve into that role.
- 26:54Speaker 1: And I think that's gonna be very important to fix
- 26:57Speaker 1: a lot of these things. It's all gonna circle around him.
- 27:04Speaker 2: No, I agree.
- 27:05Speaker 4: I agree with that.
- 27:06Speaker 7: That pressure, the balancing act is you just you can't
- 27:11Speaker 7: over correct to where no one's enjoying it, morale is down,
- 27:17Speaker 7: and no one wants.
- 27:18Speaker 2: To be on your team like that balance.
- 27:20Speaker 1: We've seen that all We've seen the Bopolini and then
- 27:23Speaker 1: the opposite, and we saw the Scott Frost and Mike
- 27:26Speaker 1: Riley of the don't address it and and just publicly say.
- 27:30Speaker 4: They know they made a mistake, like we'll figure it out.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Right.
- 27:33Speaker 1: There's there is You're right, there's a balance. I think
- 27:35Speaker 1: Rule sits in the middle there and it's good.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Yes, I agree, right.
- 27:39Speaker 6: I was also thinking about this the other day. Every
- 27:42Speaker 6: single one of be on those teams. You know, Mac
- 27:44Speaker 6: Wisconsin has always been more physical than Nebraskat. He knows
- 27:48Speaker 6: how to be more physical than you guys.
- 27:51Speaker 7: And that's what Rule said in the press conversation, like, yeah,
- 27:53Speaker 7: Illinois human, they wanted to win the game, like they
- 27:56Speaker 7: were here to beat us. They weren't here to play football.
- 27:58Speaker 2: They were here to beat.
- 27:59Speaker 7: Us, and we were not out there to them. We're
- 28:01Speaker 7: there to play football, and then we got tight.
- 28:06Speaker 4: I completely agree. I think all that factors into it.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Okay, so moving to Purdue, now that we know how
- 28:15Speaker 1: to win one score games, produce one and two. They
- 28:23Speaker 1: just demolished Indiana State, who I assume is really bad,
- 28:26Speaker 1: and then got demolished by Notre Dame in Oregon State
- 28:31Speaker 1: the past two weeks. Ryan Walters is their head coach
- 28:36Speaker 1: the second season. I read an interesting report article that
- 28:42Speaker 1: someone interviewed a for new podcaster and just to get
- 28:45Speaker 1: their opinions on where their fan base players.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Where they think they're at.
- 28:50Speaker 1: It said, the fan base is pretty split right now
- 28:52Speaker 1: on Walter's in the future. Obviously it's only a second year.
- 28:55Speaker 1: I'm supposed to have a strong defensive background.
- 29:00Speaker 4: That's they're they're kind of struggling there as of late.
- 29:05Speaker 7: I saw the World Herald that seven out of Walter's
- 29:08Speaker 7: fifteen games, they've given up.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Thirty five points or more. There you go, so almost half.
- 29:15Speaker 7: That's not what you hope or out of a defensive
- 29:17Speaker 7: specialist coach.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Yeah, he might not have much time left.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll see.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I mean, I think this is a game obviously that
- 29:27Speaker 1: they probably think they need to win or at least
- 29:30Speaker 1: play well in for them to see progress. Uh, they're
- 29:34Speaker 1: gonna be desperate, and I will say that because like
- 29:39Speaker 1: they have not looked good and they're at the point
- 29:42Speaker 1: where they're either going to make.
- 29:43Speaker 4: The move or move up or.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Move down, and we're gonna get Their best shot is homecoming.
- 29:49Speaker 4: I think it was named beginning of the season to sellout.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I'll be surprised if the stands are completely filled. I
- 29:55Speaker 1: expect there to be a lot of Nebraska fans there
- 29:58Speaker 1: as as normal, But they're gonna give us our best shot.
- 30:01Speaker 4: And the best way of doing that this year is
- 30:04Speaker 4: not what Perdue normally does.
- 30:06Speaker 1: It's their run game, and I think that's what they
- 30:08Speaker 1: want to do more so than anything now with their
- 30:11Speaker 1: two bigger running backs with Devin Macabe and Reggie Love
- 30:14Speaker 1: the third, they're gonna try to establish the run and
- 30:17Speaker 1: control the clock. Their offensive coordinator is Graham Harrell, Mike
- 30:21Speaker 1: Leach coaching air Raid They're not gonna do that as
- 30:27Speaker 1: much as you think. They lost a couple of receivers
- 30:29Speaker 1: of the portal. They don't even have a receiver that
- 30:33Speaker 1: has over one hundred yards yet they're tight end. Max
- 30:37Speaker 1: Claire is their go to receiver. He's averaged about fifty
- 30:40Speaker 1: yards a game. But it's they're not going to be
- 30:44Speaker 1: this five wide, four wide team that we've seen in
- 30:47Speaker 1: the past, so waite. Their defense got some inexperienced back
- 30:52Speaker 1: lost a couple of guys in the portal as well.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Do returned Kydrian Jenkins and Dylan feed them in? Are
- 30:58Speaker 1: their two kind of impact players?
- 31:02Speaker 4: Guys.
- 31:02Speaker 1: My big thing and big thing I want to call
- 31:05Speaker 1: out in this game. Can we run the ball effectively
- 31:09Speaker 1: on offense? Teams have demolished them. Can we do it
- 31:14Speaker 1: even if they know we're going to do it. Can
- 31:17Speaker 1: we man up and run the ball with our running
- 31:20Speaker 1: backs for four quarters?
- 31:26Speaker 7: I hope so me too will be nice?
- 31:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, it is interesting that we're not.
- 31:35Speaker 7: Really worried talking about pur doing the air raids since
- 31:37Speaker 7: even though their offensive coordinator is an a raid guy,
- 31:40Speaker 7: they have fencing card former Longhorn backup. Who's okay? I
- 31:46Speaker 7: mean he's not great. He was there last year.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Too and was a great I'd say he regrets his
- 31:51Speaker 3: whole college career.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Ever since he was in Texas.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he's gotten worse every year.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Yeah, and we beat him up last year. I think
- 31:59Speaker 1: he even got injured and went out. I mean we
- 32:02Speaker 1: physically kicked his butt. And last year's game and that
- 32:06Speaker 1: was one that we were up by a lot and
- 32:08Speaker 1: they kind of creep back in it and we're like,
- 32:09Speaker 1: are we gonna lose this?
- 32:10Speaker 4: And we didn't. We end up winning at home.
- 32:15Speaker 3: I agree.
- 32:16Speaker 7: I think we need to run the ball on them.
- 32:18Speaker 7: I would like to see us score a lot of points.
- 32:19Speaker 7: I don't expect us to put up sixty six like
- 32:21Speaker 7: Notre Dame, but if they're giving up like probably thirty
- 32:27Speaker 7: points a game at this point, if not more, it
- 32:32Speaker 7: would be disheartening if our offense isn't able to move
- 32:34Speaker 7: the ball on them.
- 32:35Speaker 2: To be honest, I feel like.
- 32:36Speaker 5: Our offenses actually looked pretty all right.
- 32:38Speaker 7: We've had a couple of penalty issues, but as far
- 32:41Speaker 7: as moving the ball goes, I think we've done pretty well.
- 32:44Speaker 6: If you can't move the ball against this team and
- 32:46Speaker 6: do what you want to do, then you got major
- 32:48Speaker 6: problems coming down the road. This is this is the
- 32:50Speaker 6: one team that you should try to figure out.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Think it's an offense on.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Maybe I I guess I'm curious going back to the
- 33:00Speaker 1: identity and what we're trying to do.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Like last week, we kind of gave up on the
- 33:04Speaker 4: run game because it wasn't.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Working, whereas last year, right we relied on the run
- 33:10Speaker 1: game and everybody knew we were going to run the
- 33:12Speaker 1: ball the whole game, and yet it still worked pretty
- 33:15Speaker 1: effectively throughout. Well, our offense is still bad, but like
- 33:19Speaker 1: we still were able to get yards running the ball.
- 33:22Speaker 4: I'm curious what the approach is this week.
- 33:26Speaker 1: I'm hoping that we're not going to have to score
- 33:28Speaker 1: thirty to win this game. But now we have that
- 33:32Speaker 1: lingering question of where our defense is at. I mean,
- 33:34Speaker 1: if our defense plays well, we should be able to
- 33:35Speaker 1: hold them under twenty if they're what we thought pre Illinois.
- 33:39Speaker 1: But right now everybody's got that question of Okay, what happened?
- 33:43Speaker 1: What did Illinois see? And our team's going to start
- 33:45Speaker 1: copying that on the offensive side, attacking this three three five,
- 33:51Speaker 1: it's kind of the first question mark for Tony White that.
- 33:55Speaker 2: We've seen since he's been here.
- 33:57Speaker 7: So yeah, a little bit of doubt, not real doubt,
- 34:00Speaker 7: but the first time we had to be like, Okay, Tony,
- 34:03Speaker 7: like what.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Are you doing? Like how you gonna fix this?
- 34:08Speaker 5: He hasn't really had to.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Fix anything yet.
- 34:13Speaker 1: One other stat that's interesting that to keep an eye
- 34:16Speaker 1: on produced three and twenty one their last two weeks
- 34:18Speaker 1: on third down. So another thing that our defense didn't
- 34:23Speaker 1: do a great job last week was getting off the
- 34:24Speaker 1: field on third down. I think that'll be important to watch.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Hopefully it's more third and seven plus versus third and
- 34:32Speaker 1: threes if if Purdue is not able to get their
- 34:37Speaker 1: run game going effectively. Score predictions real quick or score thoughts, guys.
- 34:44Speaker 1: I'm I'm keeping it low scoring. I'm going twenty four
- 34:47Speaker 1: to twenty one Nebraska. We win a one score game
- 34:50Speaker 1: on the road. I think there's gonna be some struggles
- 34:52Speaker 1: and battles here. I think are we're not going to
- 34:56Speaker 1: be completely satisfied, but I think we're gonna get a win.
- 34:58Speaker 1: I'm not pretting us to lose the road. I think
- 35:01Speaker 1: Dylan might struggle a little bit first road game in college.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Although it's not a huge road environment that still plays
- 35:08Speaker 1: a factor into it.
- 35:10Speaker 2: What is the spread?
- 35:11Speaker 7: And I know I'm thinking twenty seven to seventeen, but
- 35:14Speaker 7: I don't what is the spread?
- 35:16Speaker 3: And nine mad is what I saw?
- 35:18Speaker 7: Okay Son, Yeah, I'm taking ten points in twenty seven
- 35:22Speaker 7: to seventeen. I think there's gonna be a lot of
- 35:24Speaker 7: ball running, so I think clockwise. I don't think it's
- 35:27Speaker 7: gonna offer a huge opportunity for scoring, but I think
- 35:30Speaker 7: there's just gonna be a couple of big plays.
- 35:34Speaker 3: About forty two twenty one. I think produced defense is terrible.
- 35:41Speaker 4: Thanks for Dak, appreciate it.
- 35:44Speaker 3: I think it's awful.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Like all right, mination uh Survivor picks. We're gonna start
- 35:52Speaker 1: there this week. I do want to say, Dak, do
- 35:55Speaker 1: you know you almost lost it last week? You realize
- 35:58Speaker 1: how close Missouri was losing to Vanderbilt.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Oh ship, I forgot yep, So it is close.

- 36:14Speaker 1: be like, ooh, there's this is gonna get this is
- 36:17Speaker 1: gonna get tricky here. But I think I got four
- 36:18Speaker 1: games I really like. So I'm taking Syracuse against holy Cross.
- 36:23Speaker 1: I'm taking Miami, Ohio. This is the one that scares me.
- 36:26Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 36:26Speaker 1: I think Miami Ohio is oh to three. They have
- 36:29Speaker 1: played better opponents. They're playing U Mass, taking LSU my
- 36:33Speaker 1: first kind of big dog. They're playing South Alabama. South
- 36:36Speaker 1: Alabama looks decent, and I'm taking Memphis over Middle Tennessee State.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Middle Tennessee State's Dad.
- 36:44Speaker 7: I would have had Memphis, but I had no only list,
- 36:46Speaker 7: but I forgot to use them last week, so I
- 36:48Speaker 7: had to sell them out.
- 36:49Speaker 5: I also have Syracuse over Holy Cross.
- 36:52Speaker 7: I also have Miami Ohio over U Mass, James Madison over.
- 36:56Speaker 5: Ball State, and then I this was the one that
- 37:00Speaker 5: pushed out Memphis.
- 37:00Speaker 2: I don't feel great about Old.
- 37:02Speaker 7: Scarce Boston College over Western Kentucky.
- 37:09Speaker 6: I also had LSU over South Alabama, Iowa State over Houston,
- 37:17Speaker 6: and then I have Oorgon over UCLA, and Ohio over Akron,
- 37:23Speaker 6: only solely because I hate Acron.
- 37:25Speaker 3: Right now, zip.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Zip zip zip DAC will end it with your picks
- 37:34Speaker 1: again thirty seconds ish still, but say the other team, all.
- 37:40Speaker 6: Right, I'm just gonna fire them out here. We go
- 37:43Speaker 6: k State four and Apple over Oklahoma State by U
- 37:45Speaker 6: plus three and a half over Baylor, Wisconsin plus thirteen
- 37:48Speaker 6: a half over USC Oklahoma minus two and a half
- 37:50Speaker 6: over Auburn, Louisville plus six and a half over an
- 37:53Speaker 6: other dame, Iowa State minus fourteen over Houston.
- 37:56Speaker 3: That's my lock.
- 37:57Speaker 6: Georgia minus two over Bama, Illinois plus nineteen against Penn State,
- 38:02Speaker 6: LSU minus twenty two against South Alabama, Oregon minus twenty
- 38:06Speaker 6: five and a half over UCLA, Nebraska minus nine and

- 38:11Speaker 6: half over Texas Tech air Force minus four against Wyoming,
- 38:14Speaker 6: and Ohio minus tole malf against Akron.
- 38:17Speaker 3: And there's one on.
- 38:18Speaker 6: The here, oh Michigan State plus twenty four against Ohio State.
- 38:21Speaker 3: I couldn't read what I wrote.
- 38:25Speaker 1: So I just heard this. I'm putting two two together.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Iowa State's only a two and a half point favorite
- 38:30Speaker 1: over Houston fourteen.
- 38:33Speaker 3: Oh two and a half. Let's see what is two
- 38:36Speaker 3: and a half here. Oklahoma's only two and a half
- 38:40Speaker 3: over Auburn.
- 38:42Speaker 4: And yeah, you took Oklahoma. That makes sense.
- 38:45Speaker 1: I thought you took Iowa State as a two and
- 38:47Speaker 1: a half point favor and then you took Iowa State
- 38:49Speaker 1: and you're under in your survivor pool.
- 38:50Speaker 4: I was like, ooh, that's bold.
