Latest / The Follow-On / RENSHAW'S REMARKABLE TEST! Cummins goes berserk as Aussies close in - RSA vs Australia 1st Test, Day 4 Review
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to another episode of Fox Cricket Podcast,
- 0:03Speaker 1: the follow-on, a joint Fox Cricket and also Code Sports.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Production this week. While we're in, yeah, and that's the
- 0:10Speaker 2: two of us.
- 0:11Speaker 3: There's a visual lady pointing to the logos.
- 0:14Speaker 1: We're in Durban after day four of the test between
- 0:17Speaker 1: Australia and South Africa, which was moving day for Australia
- 0:21Speaker 1: once again in a very dominant position. I need six
- 0:24Speaker 1: wickets tomorrow. South Africa effectively is out of the chances
- 0:28Speaker 1: of winning, I think. but they'll be batting for time
- 0:31Speaker 1: tomorrow to try and save this test. But it's questions, questions, questions, Dan,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and there's a big reason why. We did not see
- 0:38Speaker 1: Steve Smith take to the field this afternoon after he
- 0:42Speaker 1: was struck by a pretty savage, a pretty venomous delivery
- 0:45Speaker 1: from Unrich Notcher earlier on.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Tell us what's going on.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Yeah, Unrich Notcher got Steve Smith on the badge while
- 0:53Speaker 4: batting it. Funnily enough, he then, the very next ball,
- 0:56Speaker 4: Marnus Labuschagne got a rising ball from him, which was
- 0:59Speaker 4: an absolute rip-snorter.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Interesting situation.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Steve Smith, so he was hit on the back, and
- 1:03Speaker 4: we know he has a history of concussion, famously at
- 1:06Speaker 4: Lourdes in 2019, but there have been one or two
- 1:08Speaker 4: others at least. was hit on the head, had a
- 1:14Speaker 4: lengthy delay in the middle of the ground, took his
- 1:16Speaker 4: helmet off as custom.
- 1:18Speaker 3: The Aussie medical staff came out, had a look at him.
- 1:20Speaker 4: He didn't quite see himself. They replaced his helmet. He
- 1:23Speaker 4: did bat on briefly.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Looked a little rattled for mine.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Certainly not at his best.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Australia was looking for declaration runs and he holed out,
- 1:31Speaker 4: which in and of itself not necessarily indicative per se
- 1:35Speaker 4: that there was something wrong. But then he didn't take
- 1:38Speaker 4: to the field. There were signs initially when Michael Neeser
- 1:40Speaker 4: was warming up at the tea break after Australia eventually
- 1:43Speaker 4: declared after Pat Cummins went nuts briefly with about 32
- 1:47Speaker 4: and 12.
- 1:47Speaker 3: We'll get to that later.
- 1:49Speaker 4: But anyway, Steve Smith, he didn't take to the field
- 1:52Speaker 4: and just had an update from the Australian team spokesman
- 1:55Speaker 4: saying that he is in effect going through the concussion.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Now, look, it's very arcane and technical, but he's got.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Concussion protocol.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Concussion protocol, I think, is fair to say.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Not that he's necessarily in the concussion protocol to the
- 2:07Speaker 4: extent that he will definitely miss 8 to 12 days,
- 2:09Speaker 4: which is the sliding scale. depending on the severity of
- 2:12Speaker 4: the concussion, but he's being monitored. And in theory, they're
- 2:17Speaker 4: continuing to monitor him for the various symptoms. He did have, well,
- 2:22Speaker 4: we imagine that he had some sort of delayed concussion symptoms,
- 2:25Speaker 4: you would think.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I'm just speculating here, we don't know for sure.
- 2:27Speaker 4: But you would think he would have had some sort
- 2:29Speaker 4: of symptoms between when he batted and then when he
- 2:32Speaker 4: didn't take the field. Because otherwise, why would he not
- 2:35Speaker 4: have taken the field, given that he batted?
- 2:36Speaker 1: And so it's clearly given Triggered Australia some reason to
- 2:40Speaker 1: test him further. So, you know, he had the on-field assessment,
- 2:42Speaker 1: as you said.
- 2:43Speaker 2: He continued on. He's then gone back. We understand he's
- 2:45Speaker 2: had another assessment.
- 2:46Speaker 1: It doesn't necessarily mean that there's anything, but they must
- 2:49Speaker 1: have thought, OK, given how hard that blow was.
- 2:51Speaker 2: And if you see the footage, and your website will.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Have it, codesports.com.au, Foxsports.com.au will absolutely have a little red
- 2:59Speaker 1: mark around the helmet where there's basically a really decent
- 3:04Speaker 1: blow to the back of their head.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You can understand why.
- 3:06Speaker 1: So this is, I think, what you could call an
- 3:09Speaker 1: unfolding situation still. We will have further updates potentially tonight
- 3:14Speaker 1: in Durban, which will be early Australian time tomorrow, and
- 3:17Speaker 1: then through it.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Complications, though. There's a couple of different dynamics here, isn't it?
- 3:23Speaker 2: Because we are six days out.
- 3:26Speaker 1: From the second test in what was formerly known as
- 3:29Speaker 1: Port Elizabeth. Can you pronounce it? It's as close as
- 3:34Speaker 1: we can get to it. We've been practicing this a
- 3:36Speaker 1: lot with some South African colleagues in the press box.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So six days now, given his history and given the
- 3:44Speaker 1: uncertainty at the moment, there is a prospect that he
- 3:46Speaker 1: might miss the second test.
- 3:48Speaker 2: We're not saying, absolutely not saying that that's certainty. It's just.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Very much it's a work in progress and we'll see
- 3:55Speaker 1: what unfolds in the next couple of days.
- 3:56Speaker 2: But it's a prospect.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Very much so.
- 3:58Speaker 4: For those, there was a bit of consternation as to
- 4:00Speaker 4: what was going to happen with Steve Smith for the
- 4:02Speaker 4: remainder of this match.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Now, under the ICC, there are two different sets of
- 4:06Speaker 3: rules here.
- 4:06Speaker 4: There's the ICC's concussion rules in match, which do allow
- 4:10Speaker 4: concussed players to be replaced. And then there's Cricket Australia's
- 4:13Speaker 4: separate concussion protocols, which, as I said, Glenn Maxwell and
- 4:16Speaker 4: Cameron Green have gone through in recent years. I'm sure
- 4:18Speaker 4: there have been a handful of other players. Jack Weatherill
- 4:19Speaker 4: has actually been in them in the last week or
- 4:21Speaker 4: two in the The Sheffield Shield.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:23Speaker 3: The former, I can't say former. Discarded Australia.
- 4:26Speaker 4: I don't want to draw a line through his career
- 4:28Speaker 4: altogether because funnily enough, he might have been half a
- 4:30Speaker 4: chance to come in. But anyway. Steve Smith is not
- 4:35Speaker 4: going to be replaced as a player in this match.
- 4:38Speaker 4: He's been replaced as a subfielder, like there are routinely
- 4:42Speaker 4: guys who subfield. Cooper Connolly and Michael Nese have spent
- 4:44Speaker 4: a fair bit of time subfielding throughout this match.
- 4:46Speaker 3: That will continue to be the case.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Nese is probably spending a bit more time on him
- 4:50Speaker 4: than he otherwise would have.
- 4:51Speaker 3: So Smith is almost certainly not going to field tomorrow.
- 4:55Speaker 3: They will clearly miss him to a degree in the.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Slips, but seemingly they're willing to pay that price, clearly,
- 5:01Speaker 4: to ensure that Steve is right.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Or has to go through this protocol. As an extension,
- 5:07Speaker 3: he can't be replaced. He's not going to be replaced
- 5:10Speaker 3: in the XI.
- 5:10Speaker 2: No.
- 5:11Speaker 4: He wouldn't be allowed to be replaced by a bowler
- 5:13Speaker 4: in any case because he's effectively purely a batsman now,
- 5:16Speaker 4: a batter. I suppose in theory they could have replaced
- 5:19Speaker 4: him with Cooper Connolly, but he's batted twice anyway, and
- 5:22Speaker 4: I suspect Connolly wouldn't be allowed to bowl because Smith
- 5:25Speaker 4: hasn't bowled in Test cricket for three years, so.
- 5:28Speaker 3: The match referee wouldn't allow that. It might be different.
- 5:29Speaker 4: If Smith is still bowling a bit of part-time stuff,
- 5:31Speaker 4: maybe there could be a case to be mounted for
- 5:34Speaker 4: Connolly to play. So that's the in-match scenario, which I
- 5:36Speaker 4: think is just worth pointing out. Then the second consideration
- 5:38Speaker 4: is what it means potentially for the second test. Now, again,
- 5:41Speaker 4: we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves here.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Question marks, question marks, question marks.
- 5:46Speaker 4: But if Steve Smith is unavailable, the other guys in
- 5:50Speaker 4: the squad, of course, you've got Cooper Connolly, who haven't
- 5:53Speaker 4: been willing.
- 5:54Speaker 3: To bat as a top four or five player to
- 5:56Speaker 3: this point. They've picked Maddison ahead of him.
- 5:58Speaker 4: And then you've got Cameron Green and Josh Inglis, who
- 6:01Speaker 4: are both on the ground, but both themselves recovering from injuries. Green,
- 6:04Speaker 4: an abdominal strain, and Inglis, the broken finger, which led
- 6:08Speaker 4: him to go back to Australia following the one-day series,
- 6:11Speaker 4: or during the one-day series, and he's now arrived back
- 6:13Speaker 4: in South Africa.
- 6:14Speaker 3: He did bat today in the nets.
- 6:15Speaker 4: So if, say, Smith is ruled out, I think Inglis
- 6:19Speaker 4: is probably the most likely guy to come into the side.
- 6:21Speaker 4: He did bat at four in very similar circumstances last
- 6:24Speaker 4: year in Barbados when Smith was ruled out. Now, how
- 6:29Speaker 4: that would quite work out in terms of whether Cam
- 6:31Speaker 4: Green is ready, if Renshaw obviously going down the autumn.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Nick Maddison made 48 today, which is another, in his
- 6:36Speaker 4: second innings, which is another part of the puzzle.
- 6:39Speaker 3: There's quite a few moving parts.
- 6:41Speaker 4: They're probably all questions to be worried for tomorrow because
- 6:44Speaker 4: Australia does still want to take six wickets and win
- 6:46Speaker 4: this Test match. And it would be a fantastic Test
- 6:48Speaker 4: match win if they do, Courtney.
- 6:50Speaker 3: I don't think it's worth understating. It's important not to understate.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And look, part of why they've won, Matthew Renshaw, clearly
- 6:57Speaker 1: a massive part. But the other thing is the old band,
- 7:01Speaker 1: the Fabulous Four, back together and hunting as a pack.
- 7:04Speaker 1: We saw Pat Cummins bowling ruthlessly, I thought, yesterday to
- 7:08Speaker 1: really rattle the top order.
- 7:09Speaker 2: He took three.
- 7:11Speaker 1: His champion teammates took two apiece as they surpassed 600
- 7:15Speaker 1: test wickets. By the end of this test, they will
- 7:17Speaker 1: have a buffer of more than 200 in the next
- 7:20Speaker 1: best quartet. We touched on them yesterday. Today, it was
- 7:23Speaker 1: initially Josh Hazlewood who came out. Now, the Australian batsmen,
- 7:26Speaker 1: as we said, we saw Nick Madison get off to
- 7:28Speaker 1: a fly and they were aggressive.
- 7:29Speaker 2: They ticked the score along.
- 7:30Speaker 1: They batted it almost five runs and over in a
- 7:33Speaker 1: really dynamic performance. Nick was great. Tavis had got at early.
- 7:37Speaker 1: You know, that's been happening a little bit lately. But,
- 7:41Speaker 1: you know, this sort of circumstance, well, you know. Steve
- 7:44Speaker 1: was batting pretty well. Marnus looked good again. Out for
- 7:48Speaker 1: 37 again.
- 7:48Speaker 3: 158 balls again. 158 balls. Which is the.
- 7:51Speaker 4: One of the quirkiest stats of the day, the highest
- 7:55Speaker 4: score and balls to be out twice in the same innings.
- 8:00Speaker 3: No one's ever made more than what Marta's made across.
- 8:02Speaker 4: These two innings, 37 from 58 balls, and have been
- 8:06Speaker 4: out in the same analysis, so to speak.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I could only have it to Marnus, and there were
- 8:12Speaker 3: a lot of.
- 8:13Speaker 4: I mean, Marnus was in good company because a lot
- 8:15Speaker 4: of his ex-compatriots, if you want a better term, also
- 8:19Speaker 4: made starts.
- 8:20Speaker 3: And as it stands in this match, Matt Renshaw, this
- 8:22Speaker 3: could get changed.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Tomorrow with Aidan Markham if he passes 50, but as
- 8:25Speaker 4: it stands in this match, Matt Renshaw is the only
- 8:26Speaker 4: man in.
- 8:27Speaker 3: This test to have passed 50, and he's.
- 8:29Speaker 4: Done it twice, and he's made 190 in 82, and
- 8:32Speaker 4: he took a wicket today, and he's taking the catch.
- 8:34Speaker 3: He's having the ultimate test.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And what he's doing, I think he's... You know, an
- 8:39Speaker 1: argument could be made. He could be Australia's second best
- 8:40Speaker 1: player to spin behind Steve Smith. I had a good
- 8:43Speaker 1: chat to Phil Jakes, another rangy left-hander who could really
- 8:48Speaker 1: handle the bat. Made, I think, three centuries. Certainly played
- 8:50Speaker 1: 11 tests and made some centuries. And he said, for
- 8:54Speaker 1: one day, the white ball thing, we would never have
- 8:57Speaker 1: seen him as a white ball player. And then he
- 8:58Speaker 1: came in and he started making his way and he
- 8:59Speaker 1: got used to facing spin. His sweeping, both reverse and
- 9:04Speaker 1: also traditional orthodox sweeping, were fantastic against Maharajah. Simon Harper, who, wow,
- 9:10Speaker 1: wrench her aside and we will get, you know, he
- 9:12Speaker 1: batted brilliantly. But what about Captain Fantastic, Pat Cummins, coming
- 9:16Speaker 1: in late and really delivering Simon Harper. Hammer blows right
- 9:22Speaker 1: at the end. Was it three sixes in four balls?
- 9:24Speaker 4: Yeah, well, he whacked Hammer and I finished 32, not
- 9:28Speaker 4: out from 12 balls.
- 9:30Speaker 3: It was, I mean, again, there's a million useless stats
- 9:32Speaker 3: in cricket on any given day.
- 9:33Speaker 2: But.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Never has an Australian player made more than 30 in
- 9:37Speaker 4: a test innings at a better strike rate. 32 off
- 9:40Speaker 4: 12 was a strike rate of 260 or something. It
- 9:44Speaker 4: was the situation for it. Pat Cummins, he's ever adaptable.
- 9:48Speaker 4: This is also a guy who famously made 12 off
- 9:50Speaker 4: 68 in a one-day international to ride shotgun to Glenn Maxwell.
- 9:53Speaker 3: So he's able to ride the situation.
- 9:54Speaker 4: He's very, look, at his best, he's a really big
- 9:56Speaker 4: power hitter in the IPL, particularly against spin.
- 9:59Speaker 3: He showed that at today. And, yeah, he got them
- 10:02Speaker 3: over it.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Look, in the end, it was 421 they set, which
- 10:05Speaker 4: is a world record chase or would require a world
- 10:08Speaker 4: record chase to get there. And Maharaj spoke post-play and
- 10:12Speaker 4: was only talking in the context of a draw.
- 10:14Speaker 3: So they've effectively ruled out. trying to chase these runs.
- 10:17Speaker 4: What was interesting, one of the, the most interesting part
- 10:20Speaker 4: was that people probably in the press box, I was
- 10:23Speaker 4: of the view that they'd probably gone maybe about half
- 10:25Speaker 4: an hour too long, that they didn't really need as
- 10:27Speaker 4: many as they had, particularly through the prism of, and you'll.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Notice, well, it's hard, maybe you can't notice, but it's
- 10:32Speaker 3: quite dark behind us. That's because it's now 6.13.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Which is a lot later than we've been recording these
- 10:37Speaker 4: shows the last few days, because we actually got through
- 10:40Speaker 4: a full day.
- 10:40Speaker 3: And then some.
- 10:41Speaker 2: And then some.
- 10:42Speaker 4: So, which is, and no one was expecting that. So,
- 10:45Speaker 4: Who knows what happens tomorrow? I mean, it could be
- 10:47Speaker 4: an early finish again, and they might only have 75
- 10:48Speaker 4: overs to get the six wickets. You'd think that would
- 10:50Speaker 4: be enough time, given they've made so many inroads. But
- 10:52Speaker 4: that was a curious dynamic today, that after three days
- 10:55Speaker 4: where we had ridiculously early finishes, particularly day one, today
- 10:58Speaker 4: we went all.
- 10:59Speaker 3: The way to 5.30, and it was still pretty safe.
- 11:03Speaker 1: And I think it was something like 92 or 93
- 11:04Speaker 1: overs bowled, and we were looking to try and get
- 11:06Speaker 1: 98 as the target.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Pretty good.
- 11:09Speaker 2: So it's, you know, I mean, look, they've lost, I think,
- 11:11Speaker 2: 60 or so For the test so far, 60 overs
- 11:14Speaker 2: behind in terms of bad light.
- 11:16Speaker 1: That's what we've lost. A little piece on pink ball
- 11:18Speaker 1: and whether the pink ball should have been used, given
- 11:22Speaker 1: it's just come into the rules. But that's a dynamic
- 11:25Speaker 1: or a discussion that can wait for another day. What
- 11:28Speaker 1: do we think unfolds tomorrow? We saw, by the way,
- 11:32Speaker 1: that man at the moment, Matthew Renshaw, not only is
- 11:35Speaker 1: he battered magnificently, he also snared his first test wicket
- 11:39Speaker 1: late in the day.
- 11:40Speaker 4: He did.
- 11:41Speaker 3: He's a very improved bowler as well.
- 11:42Speaker 4: He's a guy who, you know, I don't think, I'd
- 11:46Speaker 4: looked up, until today he bowled five test overs across,
- 11:49Speaker 4: what was it, 14 tests.
- 11:51Speaker 3: He would have bowled at least, the scoreboard, seven overs,
- 11:54Speaker 3: one for 16.
- 11:54Speaker 4: So he's more than doubled the amount of overs he
- 11:56Speaker 4: bowled in test cricket until today.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Clearly, he's taken his first wicket.
- 12:00Speaker 2: And that wicket was, yeah.
- 12:01Speaker 3: And it's giving it away to the captain. That pad
- 12:04Speaker 3: caught by Nick Maddison.
- 12:05Speaker 4: So a great day for the Australia's the selection decisions
- 12:08Speaker 4: they made that Maddison and Renshaw could combine. It's three
- 12:11Speaker 4: days is a long time in cricket in this context.
- 12:14Speaker 4: And look, he's just become an exceptional player. And I
- 12:17Speaker 4: suppose the question here for Renshaw is, will this be...
- 12:20Speaker 4: I mean, look, he's not going to replicate this every test.
- 12:23Speaker 3: That would be absurd to contemplate.
- 12:24Speaker 4: But I think the thing is, this will be known
- 12:27Speaker 4: as the Renshaw test for time being. The question is,
- 12:31Speaker 4: will this be the Renshaw test forever today because he
- 12:34Speaker 4: never comes close to matching this?
- 12:36Speaker 3: Or is this the start of.
- 12:37Speaker 4: you know, a run in his early 30s where he
- 12:38Speaker 4: can really stand himself as a genuinely world-class player.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Obviously, we don't know.
- 12:42Speaker 4: He's going to India early next year where his sweep
- 12:45Speaker 4: is going to be very much coming to the fore.
- 12:46Speaker 4: An extra spin option in India, which potentially gives him
- 12:50Speaker 4: a bit more flexibility from a selection perspective. Travis Head
- 12:52Speaker 4: didn't even bowl today because Renshaw has moved sort of
- 12:54Speaker 4: ahead of him in the, perhaps, well, perhaps ahead.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Of him in the part-time picking order.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Coming from a taller position in terms of delivery. I
- 13:01Speaker 1: think we can say with, you know, assuredness that he's
- 13:04Speaker 1: certainly playing And so he's got the next 12 months
- 13:07Speaker 1: at the very least. You know, I mean, things can
- 13:10Speaker 1: change in test cricket, but the way he's played here
- 13:12Speaker 1: and the fact we've got India to come and the
- 13:13Speaker 1: way he's batting in spin suggests that he's, you know,
- 13:17Speaker 1: will be a fixture in this.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Team going forward.
- 13:19Speaker 4: I think the other thing with him here is that
- 13:22Speaker 4: it's an aberration in terms of his test performance at
- 13:24Speaker 4: this point by a length of length in straight, I suppose,
- 13:27Speaker 4: with the exception of that 180 all those years ago
- 13:29Speaker 4: against Pakistan.
- 13:30Speaker 3: But it's not an aberration if you look at his
- 13:32Speaker 3: form across 12, 15, 18 months.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Across all formats.
- 13:36Speaker 3: There's been a guy who's just making a lot of runs.
- 13:38Speaker 4: First for Australia A in white ball cricket last year,
- 13:40Speaker 4: on the back of a good season for Queensland, then
- 13:42Speaker 4: very good Shield season. Got into the one Aussie one
- 13:46Speaker 4: day and T20 side, performed well there. Had a big
- 13:49Speaker 4: time in Zimbabwe, some other starts across these one days.
- 13:52Speaker 4: Was taking some wickets in those one days in the
- 13:54Speaker 4: middle of the year on turning tracks in.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Pakistan and Bangladesh. This is a guy who has established
- 13:58Speaker 3: himself as a guy.
- 14:00Speaker 4: In hindsight, one of the remarkable things is that he
- 14:02Speaker 4: wasn't Cricket Australia contracted this year.
- 14:04Speaker 3: He only recently earned an upgrade.
- 14:05Speaker 2: And what an upgrade.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Yeah, he's got $ 150, 000 extra in the bank at least,
- 14:11Speaker 4: and he deserves it.
- 14:13Speaker 2: So let's see, I suppose, the wrap for day four.
- 14:16Speaker 1: As it stands, South Africa went into bat needing to
- 14:19Speaker 1: make a big target, $ 420, 000 to try and win the test,
- 14:23Speaker 1: which was always going to be very unlikely.
