- 0:09Hello and welcome back to another episode of Bartlett
- 0:12Laurencia, how are you all doing?
- 0:13I hope you're doing great. Today's episode is once again
- 0:16sponsored by the DPC's wigs. Now this is a 12 inch bulb
- 0:20giving me light 99 G and it highlights of colour 1B.
- 0:24We have different lengths, different texture, different
- 0:28colours. Get in contact with us and we
- 0:30get you sorted. Our contact details is on the
- 0:33screen and just let us know what you want.
- 0:36We sell, who sell and retail. Now let us dive into this this
- 0:40episode because listen, we are still in shock over the passing
- 0:46of Mobad. Everybody's still trying to get
- 0:49over that, trying to look for the way forward both in the
- 0:53entertainment industry and youth in general.
- 0:56Like decisions that youth are taking.
- 0:59Let us look for how we can prevent certain things from
- 1:03happening Now. As we all know, the UK opened
- 1:06its borders to skilled workers, especially the care work visa
- 1:11permit. A whole lot of people have been
- 1:13using this thing. Now this is not just for
- 1:16Nigerians, this is not just for Africans.
- 1:18The UK openly borders to every country and everybody.
- 1:21Now there's been issues going on because a lot of people will
- 1:24just get licenced to bring skilled workers, collect as much
- 1:29as £15,000, then some even £20,000 from people to bring
- 1:33them in, promising them job opportunities.
- 1:37Some of these people, they sell up everything that they have to
- 1:41commute to work thinking OK they're going to be working
- 1:45maybe 100 hours because this will promise them crazy things,
- 1:49promise them they're going to be making crazy money and this will
- 1:52sell up everything to come here and there's no job.
- 1:57Basically this company is just the mushroom company that just
- 2:01got the licence to bring them in and they vanish.
- 2:04This has happened to a lot of people now.
- 2:07I remember a friend of mine calling me, he came here to do
- 2:10his masters degree and he did in cyber security, very lucrative
- 2:16area at the moment. And he called me and said he
- 2:20wanted to change to work visa like care work visa because it's
- 2:26five years and if he switched to the two years work permit, it's
- 2:32just two years. So he's looking into doing the
- 2:35five years return. I'm like, why do you want to
- 2:38restrict yourself to a Care Visa when you did a very good, you
- 2:45know, course for your master's degree?
- 2:47They are looking. A lot of companies are hiring
- 2:51network security experts at the moment this we are making lots
- 2:55of money. This is IT sector.
- 2:56We did computer science together.
- 2:58So I was like, why do you want to limit yourself?
- 3:02Do you understand the implication of what you're
- 3:05saying? Do you understand that?
- 3:07OK, if you sign this Care Visa, you're going to be doing care
- 3:11for the next five years. Yes, it's five years, but you
- 3:17are restricted to care. You can't do your network
- 3:20security. You cannot use your care work
- 3:23permits and go and work in a company.
- 3:26That is not going to happen. Why do you want to do this?
- 3:28And he was like, ohh a friend told him, that friend told him
- 3:33the conversation wasn't going anywhere.
- 3:35And I said, listen, just go and mark today's dates in your
- 3:38calendar and just markets. We are going to have this
- 3:43conversation in the next 2-3 years and then you tell me the
- 3:48outcome of it. It wasn't like I was trying to
- 3:53rain on his parade or anything. I could see the dangers in
- 3:57somebody who did masters degree in a very lucrative profession
- 4:02now trying to switch to a care visa.
- 4:05Not because they've not completed their course, not
- 4:07because they cannot. Just because OK, visa is more or
- 4:10five years and the work permit is 2 years root and this guy was
- 4:17ready to pay about £10,000 to get this.
- 4:20And I'm like why? Ladies and gentlemen, we had a
- 4:25conversation recently. It's not even up to a year and
- 4:28he's already regretting because the company is signed to.
- 4:31They are not even trying to get him any job.
- 4:37He's not doing anything. And he I I didn't even know what
- 4:42to tell him. I didn't.
- 4:44I I was just you know how you don't even I couldn't even say
- 4:50anything because it was just like why so many people make
- 4:55decisions based on what they have heard or what someone they
- 5:00have told them. A lot of people coming in with
- 5:02this Care Visa, they don't want to listen to any other thing
- 5:06because these people, they've told them, oh this person did
- 5:10this and did that. And at the end of the day the
- 5:12person gets sorted. Of course they're going to sell
- 5:15you that dream. Of course they're going to tell
- 5:17you all these things that will make you bring out that money.
- 5:19Of course they're going to tell you things that will make you
- 5:23feel that is your best option before you do things.
- 5:28Ask questions. Now you.
- 5:30OK, they have. They've been trying to stop the
- 5:33whole because there there was a documentary on Sky that
- 5:39documented not just Nigerian immigrants complain about these
- 5:43things, even the Indians, you know, the Asian people, because
- 5:47these are the people that are kind of stuck in this whole
- 5:51thing. Now watch this.
- 5:52It's chaotic. Dishing out supplies in a
- 5:55cramped and crowded food bank? No problem.
- 6:01Organisers say they're overwhelmed because it's not
- 6:04just locals who are struggling to survive.
- 6:09Sit down. Here.
- 6:10Some of these people have recently arrived from Nigeria
- 6:13but got here to find the jobs they were sponsored for don't
- 6:16exist. Sky News has already shown how
- 6:19skilled worker visas are being abused and middle men are making
- 6:23large sums of money exploiting this legal route to the UK.
- 6:28Now we can reveal how people who thought they were coming here to
- 6:32work are falling destitute. Most are reluctant to talk.
- 6:38They feel despair at their predicament.
- 6:41This woman who were calling blessing hasn't been given any
- 6:44shifts by the company which sponsored her since she arrived
- 6:48three months ago. I've always provided for myself.
- 6:52I'm a very hard working, diligent person.
- 6:55So for me to be here depending on people to eat, you know,
- 6:59coming to the food bank to get food.
- 7:01Isn't isn't quite OK with me and make me feel I'm less of a
- 7:06person, a human I should be in the position of health in not
- 7:10the receiving end because this is not who I was back in my
- 7:14country. Blessing told us she paid an
- 7:16agent in Nigeria £10,000 to arrange a full time job as a
- 7:20carer on a skilled worker visa. She asked us not to reveal the
- 7:25company which sponsored her, fearing repercussions, but we've
- 7:28seen other documentation supporting her account of what's
- 7:32happened. There is a big scam going on.
- 7:34A lot of people have been scammed every day being deceived
- 7:38that we have jobs. How many people do you know?
- 7:41Who've come on skilled worker visas and got here and there's
- 7:44no work. Ohh, I can't go.
- 7:46It's. Yeah, I can't.
- 7:50There are so many, so many. I met a lot here and so many are
- 7:55still coming after I've come here.
- 7:57Dozens. Hundreds.
- 7:59Ohh, let me see dozens. Ohh does this, Yeah.
- 8:03This woman also came from Nigeria and says she's had to
- 8:06move N to live with her sister because there's no work for her.
- 8:10They all say it's proving virtually impossible to find a
- 8:14new company to sponsor them for a full time position and having
- 8:18come as carers under the terms of their visas, they can't work
- 8:22in any other job sector. We're calling this couple Joyce
- 8:27and Alan. They say they also paid an agent
- 8:30in Nigeria £10,000 to arrange employment for Joyce as a carer.
- 8:35I've been tutored. Either has not been easy.
- 8:38I have to sell my car, sell my property.
- 8:41God alone took a lot of risk to his of the money.
- 8:45How difficult is it to transfer to another company to get
- 8:49sponsored by somebody else? Is very difficult because most
- 8:53jobs you want to get the first of us tell you that actually
- 8:58you've got this offer from somewhere else, so maybe you
- 9:01should go back to that place to get your job.
- 9:04That's what they always say. We are begging the government if
- 9:08they can look into it. The founder of the food bank
- 9:12says she's already under pressure, feeding local people
- 9:15in a cost of living crisis. Nearly half the people you're
- 9:18supporting are people who were given a visa to receive.
- 9:22OK without walk. And then got here and there was
- 9:25no job, yes. Yes.
- 9:27He shocked by that. I am shocked because this has
- 9:31never happened in the UK before. So we are so surprised to see
- 9:34this happening for UK governments, you know, and a lot
- 9:37of them sold their houses in Africa, sold their cars, sold
- 9:41there are. Things that are gonna start.
- 9:42And they charge they are starting a new life here.
- 9:45Getting here. They got stopped.
- 9:46It's so it's so. I'm sorry.
- 9:49It's so depressing. That's the word.
- 9:51Thank you. It is so.
- 9:53I think the big issue. Is a very big issue.
- 9:55It's people that are not British citizens, people who came to the
- 9:58UK very. Nigerians, they're not British.
- 10:02They have no other documents than the skilled visa that
- 10:05brought them into this. Country to come, walk.
- 10:08Thank you very very much. You are well that.
- 10:10These people go out, yeah. As we finished filming by the
- 10:13front door, two people scurry passed with the food they've
- 10:16been given, disappearing into the rain in Rochdale in Greater
- 10:19Manchester. It's only afterwards we're told
- 10:23their story that they were too ashamed to speak to us.
- 10:26One of the women has hit rock bottom and is sleeping on a bus.
- 10:32Last week we gave our bread and tuna because that's what she can
- 10:37eat easily without cooking or warming.
- 10:40Now homeless, we're told the lady on the bus is yet another
- 10:44person who paid an agent in Nigeria to arrange care work in
- 10:48the UK and whose dreams of a new life are in tatters.
- 10:52Do you know if she was offered a full time job certificate?
- 10:55Yes, yes. But according to and what she
- 10:59show us, yeah, they offer her full time job and she can't go
- 11:03back home. She has nothing again at all.
- 11:07She sells. She sells everything that she
- 11:10has back home. She's in a bad way.
- 11:13Bad, bad one, Yeah. The Lady on the Bus is one of a
- 11:18huge number of people who've come to the UK from around the
- 11:21world on skilled worker visas, more than 170,000 in the 12
- 11:26months to March this year, including 40,000 as carers.
- 11:31What we've found is just how widespread abuse of the skilled
- 11:34worker visa system is in different communities and around
- 11:38the country. Again and again, people telling
- 11:40us the same story. Some are getting here and
- 11:43finding there's no work. Others are using it as a route
- 11:47to reach Britain. We've come to West Yorkshire,
- 11:50where the lure of a better future has brought some people
- 11:53on skilled worker visas from South Asia to join Bradford's
- 11:57established Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities.
- 12:02Speaking to local businesses in a supermarket where told it's
- 12:06not just people who aren't getting the work they were
- 12:08promised who are struggling. They tell us people are coming
- 12:12into the store looking for jobs who also came on skilled worker
- 12:17visas but have no intention of working as carers and are using
- 12:21the system purely to reach Britain.
- 12:25Of them were told before they arrived that you will have no
- 12:29jobs, you're only arriving here and they do pay a lot of money
- 12:33and. So it's a way to get to the UK.
- 12:35Just to get to the UK. It does shock me and it is
- 12:39frustrating. Who are you frustrated?
- 12:43With we're not only frustrated with the people that are coming
- 12:47in knowingly, we're also frustrated with the government
- 12:52for creating this mess in the first place.
- 12:55We're told people are coming in off the streets looking for jobs
- 13:00so poverty stricken they're even offering to work for next to
- 13:03nothing in exchange for something to eat.
- 13:06They are very disruptive. Some people, they come begging.
- 13:10Me brother give me some job because I don't have any food to
- 13:13eat. And and you get this everyday.
- 13:17Everyday. Every week.
- 13:20Behind the scenes, the scale of the problem becomes clearer.
- 13:28Well, today's been is already gone, so.
- 13:30Rejected CVS end up in the bin, but they say nearly half are
- 13:35from people on skilled worker visas not allowed to work in
- 13:38their shop. Anhar explains what happened
- 13:42with a recent applicant. We've done an employer checking
- 13:46service check. And it's just come up with the
- 13:50worker restrictions. So he is allowed to work in this
- 13:54country, he is legally here. However, he's not allowed to
- 13:57work in this particular business.
- 13:59He's only here for skilled worker as a carer.
- 14:05Has spoken to a number of people who travelled to the UK from
- 14:08Pakistan on skilled worker visas that say they're too ashamed to
- 14:13be filmed and are afraid of being sent back.
- 14:17And the reason they don't want to come out, firstly,
- 14:19embarrassment, but then secondly, on top of that they
- 14:21just feel obviously they don't want to make themselves.
- 14:26You know known. Labine runs a community cafe and
- 14:30food bank and says people's expectation of how things will
- 14:33be in the UK doesn't match the reality.
- 14:36There is. I think a lot of people feel
- 14:38that they're gonna come over here, they're gonna start a new
- 14:40life. It's gonna be a a life where
- 14:42they're gonna make lots of money, they're gonna be living
- 14:45in lavish lifestyle. But it's nothing like it's just
- 14:48a, you know, a false dream misconception for them.
- 14:51And to be honest, in terms, I would put it as a scam.
- 14:55How strong do you think the government cheques are at the
- 14:57moment? The level of cheques are very
- 14:59weak. I think this is massive to be
- 15:01honest. The government says abuse of the
- 15:04immigration system will not be tolerated.
- 15:06In a statement, the Home Office said we have robust measures in
- 15:10place to ensure compliance. We will always take decisive
- 15:14action if employers break the rules, including by revoking
- 15:18sponsor licences when necessary. But for those now unable to
- 15:22support themselves after moving to Britain, serious questions
- 15:26remain about the dream being sold to some people using the
- 15:30skilled worker visa route to get here.
- 15:33Lisa Holland, Sky News Now after watching this whole thing, you
- 15:39could see the dangers of just making decisions with, you know,
- 15:43little information that you have or information that somebody
- 15:47that is trying to sell something to you is given to you.
- 15:50Ask questions and even if somebody else is giving you a
- 15:54contrary you know information, that is not suiting to what you
- 15:59are needing at that point, make sure you ask for five people.
- 16:05Always tell people that. Listen, if I want to do
- 16:07something, I will tell about 15 people about that plan.
- 16:11Now the whole 15 people cannot be wrong.
- 16:15Yes, maybe you can get 3-4 different group of people to
- 16:21talking about the same thing, but you know ultimately what you
- 16:24want. At that point you have a more
- 16:27robust information to make an informed decision.
- 16:31But some people don't even want to look at these things.
- 16:33If you tell somebody, listen, if you want to travel and you're
- 16:37thinking about selling everything, why don't you just
- 16:40sit down? Do like I don't.
- 16:43It beats my imagination why You tell some people to do nothing
- 16:47and they will refuse to do it because you know they don't want
- 16:50to spend 4 years, but you're going to come and you're going
- 16:53to. You're going to sell up
- 16:55everything you have and even the job you're not going to get.
- 16:58People are stranded, people are sleeping on the streets, people
- 17:02are just, there are so, so many people suffering because they
- 17:08they want a better life. And there's nothing wrong about
- 17:11wanting a better, a better life for yourself.
- 17:14The situation in diaspora has changed since the pandemic.
- 17:19There's so much inflation, there's so much hardship going
- 17:24on, and if you are coming in, you have to be able to put
- 17:29yourself in a strategic position to be able to work now.
- 17:32Do you nothing, Come here after one or two years.
- 17:35Once you're settled, you cannot decide to go into other
- 17:38professions that you really want to do, Use that as a stepping
- 17:42stone. A lot of people are not working
- 17:44with their first degree. They are not working with it.
- 17:47They don't. They've done that as you use it
- 17:50as a stepping stone and they get something else doing.
- 17:53But when you tell people use this as a stepping stone for you
- 17:56to get what you want, stoop to conquer.
- 18:00They will tell you no, I cannot do it.
- 18:04Now in this particular friend of mine he he he I don't even know
- 18:10because this person spends over £15,000 to do a master's degree
- 18:15and then they they have spent like over £10,000 to do the care
- 18:21stuff and now you can't even get a job.
- 18:27He is lucky he has a girlfriend who is accommodating him and
- 18:32he's trying to get his life together, but that is not the
- 18:35case for so many people. There are so many people
- 18:39sleeping on the on buses, you know, depending on charities for
- 18:45food. When you have paid 10, fifteen,
- 18:48£20,000 to a care company, some of these, you know, care
- 18:54companies, what they do, they just set this thing up.
- 18:56Just about 15 people collect, We're talking about 15 people
- 19:01talking about over £150,000 and they disappear.
- 19:05Some of them take that money and fly to America, some of them
- 19:08move out, go to Australia, Canada.
- 19:11You will not see them again. The UK police, who are they
- 19:14going to look for them? Because they are not.
- 19:16They are no longer in the country and they are not even
- 19:18willing to come back for any reason.
- 19:21We have to be careful. We have to be careful before you
- 19:26sign anything, before you make that agreement, before you
- 19:31think, OK, I I want to go to the next step and I need certain
- 19:36things to be in place. Make sure you ask questions.
- 19:39Don't just do things because every other person is doing it.
- 19:42Don't do things. People lie.
- 19:45I always tell people these things and they think I'm just,
- 19:48you know, raining on their parade.
- 19:50People lie. People go through the worst
- 19:54things and they will come out splash makeups on their face
- 19:58where their clothes and then tell you they are living their
- 20:02best life. But they're lying.
- 20:06They're going through challenges that you don't know.
- 20:09There are so many people on this care visas.
- 20:11If they tell you what they are going through, you will not
- 20:14believe it, but they will come out and tell you this is the
- 20:17best decision, decision that they've had, that they are
- 20:20working, they are doing this, they are doing that.
- 20:23They don't tell you, they don't give you the details.
- 20:26Now I tell people before you do anything, YouTube I know is not
- 20:32a source of information, you know.
- 20:34Then back then in school they will tell you.
- 20:36Wikipedia should not be your reference point, but if you know
- 20:40how to use Google and Wikipedia, you can get an understanding of
- 20:45what you need to look for in in an academic sense.
- 20:49Answer that question and then you now look for, see get
- 20:54information from from, from YouTube.
- 20:57Ask people who have been in that situation.
- 20:59Yes, I see a lot of people glorifying all this.
- 21:02How to get to Canada, how to get care visa to the UK, How to do
- 21:07this and how to do that. I understand there are so many
- 21:09of those videos now. I remember when there were so
- 21:13many videos of people talking about their challenges in the
- 21:15UK, it was kind of a joke. At that point people say all
- 21:22these people that just got here, they will be doing videos how
- 21:25life is in the UK, but that is the true sense of what they are
- 21:31going through. Yes, we may not like it or
- 21:34listen to people. Listen to people's challenges.
- 21:38As a project manager, one thing they tell you is before you make
- 21:41a decision, before you embark on a project, look at a successful
- 21:46project and a failed project. Benchmark these two things.
- 21:50You cannot go wrong when you see a successful project, you see
- 21:55why that project is successful or was successful and you look
- 22:00at a failed one. What they did wrong Once you get
- 22:04these two things together and you put yourself in that middle,
- 22:08yes, you're going to. You know your estimates are not
- 22:11going to be perfect, but there are certain pitfalls that you're
- 22:15going to avoid. Apply that in your daily life.
- 22:20Make problem solving your number one priority.
- 22:25If you before you travel, what is the problem you're trying to
- 22:28solve? Are you trying to go to school?
- 22:32If school is what you want, then get a student visa and travel.
- 22:37Are you trying to do business? If business is what you want,
- 22:41what are you doing with student visa?
- 22:46If work is what you want, you want to work in the healthcare.
- 22:50Why are you paying 1020 thousand to do a care work visa where you
- 22:55can sit down, do nothing, get a job and get You can go to
- 23:01Canada, you can go to US, you can go to Australia.
- 23:03In must not be UK. Try to have that skill of
- 23:09problem solving. Ask yourself what is the problem
- 23:13you're trying. If you answer the question of
- 23:16what problem am I trying to solve, you're going to avoid so
- 23:21many problems. I know it is not easy,
- 23:24especially when the jackpot thing come into somebody they
- 23:27just want to leave. But take a step back, Ask
- 23:32yourself, am I going to study? Is is he really school?
- 23:39Is it work? Is it business?
- 23:43Do I really want to relocate? Because these are questions that
- 23:48you know. They just tell you ohh student
- 23:49visa. Yes I want student visa.
- 23:51When I get there I will sort it out.
- 23:54You're paying £15,000 to come and go to school and then to
- 24:00People need to wake cope. Stop wasting.
- 24:02People are so free. People are going through a lot.
- 24:06Even the UK citizens are protesting before you just wake
- 24:12up and travel. Have a plan and make sure that
- 24:16plan is not just limited to a geographic location.
- 24:20Have a qualification that even if you're going to Canada you
- 24:23can use it. If you're going to the US you
- 24:25can use it. If you're going to the UK you
- 24:27can use it if you're tired. I have a family friend who they
- 24:32got to the UK and they were like this.
- 24:35The wife is a nurse and she was the the the family were like you
- 24:40know, UK's we are not happy with the UK.
- 24:43She applied for jobs in the US and she got and they moved to
- 24:46the US just like that within a year.
- 24:50That is the power of having a qualification that can take you
- 24:55anywhere as an IT person. You can sit down, get a
- 25:01qualification, a job in the US. You can either go to the US or
- 25:04you stay where you are and you're working.
- 25:06Or you see we have moved beyond certain qualifications.
- 25:14If you want to improve your life, there are certain things
- 25:17you need to know. There are certain things you
- 25:19need to do. Seek knowledge.
- 25:22Seek information for you to put yourself in strategic positions
- 25:27that will enable you fulfil whatever you want to fulfil.
- 25:32Once you know the right question to ask yourself, ask yourself
- 25:36that question and if you can answer truthfully.
- 25:40There are so many problems that you avoid for yourself anyway.
- 25:45I'm not saying people should not travel.
- 25:47If you have 20,000 to pay for Care work visa, go and do it.
- 25:52If you have £15,000 to pay for school fees when you know you
- 25:56don't want to go to school, go and pay.
- 26:00If you have a £20,000 to pay for school fees and then pay for
- 26:08care visa when you just know you want to relocate, go and pee.
