- 0:00Time now for back to the basics and healthcare with Balanced Life Chiropractic, and
- 0:03we have doctor Harley joining us. Hey doing, doctor Harley, Hey John,
- 0:06I'm doing great. You know, another beautiful day in the neighborhood.
- 0:10It's kind of weird, like we had nice, amazing spring like weather that
- 0:14we had like little snowflakes blown around, and then it's been nice and so
- 0:17this is that time of year we don't not quite well that the forecast coming
- 0:20up. I don't want to talk about it, so it doesn't exist.
- 0:24If I just pretend like it's never gonna happen, it's not gonna happen.
- 0:27So eventually it will get nice out. But this time of year, we
- 0:30also just recently changed our clocks, and there's a lot of people that are
- 0:33having a little issue trying to get used to the new schedule and getting caught
- 0:37up on sleep. So let's chat about sleep. Yeah, we're going to
- 0:39continue it. Last week we talked a lot about how stress can affect our
- 0:43sleep, you know, different times of the year, stuff like that.
- 0:46So let's talk a little bit more about you know, you're laying in it,
- 0:49maybe you're not comfortable, maybe there's a problem with your mattress or your
- 0:53pillow. You know, I get asked that a lot. What's the best
- 0:55pillow, what's the best mattress. Yeah, there's no single good answer for
- 0:59that. It's all different based on who the person is. I'm assuming,
- 1:02right, you know, there's some things to look for. You know,
- 1:04you definitely want something that's a little bit more firm. You know, you
- 1:08don't want everyone's like I want the cloud fluffy pillow top. But you're not
- 1:12doing any good things for your spine with those because the softer that bed is,
- 1:17the more you're going to sink into it. And we want to maintain
- 1:19those nice curves that we have on our spine swinter neck. We should have
- 1:23like a sea shaped curve or banana shape in our upper back. It should
- 1:26curve the opposite direction, and then when we get down to the lumbar spy
- 1:30in the low back, we should have that sea shape banana shaped curve again.
- 1:33So I think when you're laying on your back, if you have a
- 1:34really soft cloud type bed, that lumbar curve is going to start to flatten
- 1:41out. And if you're laying like that all night and then suddenly you get
- 1:44up in the morning, everything that's been all relaxed and out of you know,
- 1:48proper curve. As soon as you sit up move around, it's like,
- 1:51oh, oh that hurts. Why is my back hurt? I thought
- 1:53this bed's comfortable. Why am I hurting? Because it's been sunk into the
- 1:57bed all night? Gotcha? And the same can happen if you're laying on
- 2:00your side too. If you don't have that proper support on your side,
- 2:04you're just going to sink into the bed there as well. So again when
- 2:07you get up in the morning, he's like, oh, why does this
- 2:07side hurt so much compared to the other side. I mean, if you're
- 2:12doing both sides, and you know, maybe both sides will hurt, but
- 2:15still like you're sinking into your mattress versus a firmer bed is going to help
- 2:17support those curves. You know, the heavier parts of you are going to
- 2:21sink into the mattress, but where those curves are, the mattress is going
- 2:23to come up and support them, so you're not sinking into it as much.
- 2:28Nice. Now that's going to be uncomfortable if you're not used to that.
- 2:30You're like, oh, this bed's hard. That's why they say it's
- 2:34like a ninety day. They want you to try it out. It's going
- 2:37to break in a little bit, you'll get used to it. But I
- 2:39break my beds in really good. I'm not a little guy. So but
- 2:46that that is probably another thing when you're looking at beds. Every person is
- 2:50made differently, so that's all going to make a difference too, right.
- 2:53I like some of the companies that they can change out different layers, So
- 2:57I think Juna is one of those genius system here in two falls. Beds
- 3:01by Design will do that as well. So like something that can like customize
- 3:05your bed to you based on different fill levels. I like the idea of
- 3:07that we're being able to take a layer out that's wearing out and putting a
- 3:10new one in. Yeah, those are some really cool options that they have
- 3:14nowadays. Could just sleep on a bean bag? Would that work? Maybe
- 3:17if you had it filled really full with really good foam? How about a
- 3:22hammock? Probably not. I don't know. I've never slept in one.
- 3:27Late in one they did on Gilligan's Island for a long time, so I
- 3:29don't think they have many options at that point. Yeah, if somebody listening
- 3:32it being serious now if somebody listening would like to get a little more information
- 3:37and maybe chat with you, I think chiropractic is a good way. Again,
- 3:40if they're out of adjustment, no matter what the bed is, it's
- 3:44just going to get out of whack anyway. So if they'd like to add
- 3:46chiropractic to their health care plan, what is the best way for them to
- 3:50connect with your you. Maybe you just got a new bed, or you've
- 3:53had this bed for ahill and you're still having a lot of pain. You're
- 3:54not comfortable if things are out of alignment in your body. You know you're
- 3:58laying on them all night of wake up with more pain. So they can
