- 1:32Speaker 1: Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
- 1:36Speaker 2: It's the story that you need to hear to believe.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Then grab your popcorn because there is more.
- 1:41Speaker 1: And of course the story here in Indiana now that
- 1:44Speaker 1: the race is over, it's the race for the Secretary
- 1:47Speaker 1: of State and what's going to happen at the convention
- 1:50Speaker 1: with the Republicans and how things are going to go.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Diego Morales, the incumbent secretary of State. He has candidates,
- 1:57Speaker 1: people running against him, the issues that have been surrounding him.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Then you have this late entry into the race where
- 2:04Speaker 1: endorsements get pulled from Diego Morales and moved to the
- 2:07Speaker 1: candidate Max Singling. But there are still candidates out there
- 2:11Speaker 1: who have been running since the beginning. David Shelton is
- 2:15Speaker 1: running for a secretary of state. A Knox County clerk
- 2:19Speaker 1: and Republican Party chairman out there.
- 2:21Speaker 3: S H E.
- 2:22Speaker 2: L T O N Shelton four.
- 2:24Speaker 1: That's fr not the number four Shelton for Indiana dot Com.
- 2:27Speaker 1: He joins us right now. And David, certainly, I've seen
- 2:31Speaker 1: you at Republican events. We've actually sat at the same
- 2:33Speaker 1: table and chatted a bit. It's been an interesting couple weeks.
- 2:38Speaker 1: But let's start with the basics. Why are you running
- 2:41Speaker 1: for secretary of State?
- 2:46Speaker 2: David?
- 2:46Speaker 3: David.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'll let producer Carl figure out that technical issue as
- 2:54Speaker 1: we wait on David Shelton, candidate for Secretary of State
- 2:58Speaker 1: in Indiana and has been it has been all the
- 3:01Speaker 1: news and has been all the rages.
- 3:02Speaker 2: It's going to continue to be. It's going to continue
- 3:05Speaker 2: to be.
- 3:06Speaker 1: This major story because well, there's drama and there's intrigue,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and for the political left, they're like, ooh fighting. Allow
- 3:15Speaker 1: me to be the first person to say out loud.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Fights are good people engaged? Is good people letting their
- 3:23Speaker 1: voices be heard. It's good as opposed to the monolithic
- 3:28Speaker 1: conversations that we get from the Democrat Party.
- 3:30Speaker 2: No dissension allowed anywhere.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Let's see if David Shelton is back on the line,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and David, let's talk about from the start, why are
- 3:37Speaker 1: you running for Secretary of State?
- 3:40Speaker 2: Well, good morning, Tony.
- 3:41Speaker 3: I am running for office because I want the job
- 3:44Speaker 3: to do the job, plain and simple. That's it. I'm
- 3:46Speaker 3: not looking for fame and glory. I'm actually asking for
- 3:50Speaker 3: additional responsibility.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So when we talk about the responsibility, we talk about
- 3:57Speaker 1: the job as Secretary of State with the things that
- 3:59Speaker 1: they cover. Is there something you see not being covered
- 4:01Speaker 1: properly or there are things that you see should be
- 4:04Speaker 1: expanded on and that this is something that government should
- 4:07Speaker 1: actually be doing.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Well. The sweet spot for me will be the elections.
- 4:13Speaker 3: That's right in my wheelhouse. I know things that need
- 4:16Speaker 3: to be implemented to implement an asap, especially when it
- 4:19Speaker 3: comes to administration of our elections. County clerks, your local
- 4:23Speaker 3: election administrators, they receive no formal training whatsoever. I want
- 4:27Speaker 3: to implement an election boot camp for new clerks given
- 4:30Speaker 3: the hands on training they need. Unfortunately, in Indiana elections,
- 4:33Speaker 3: the saying is there's ninety two ways of doing elections,
- 4:36Speaker 3: and that's true, we need to establish consistency. With that consistency,
- 4:40Speaker 3: you will eliminate many many errors that we see after
- 4:43Speaker 3: every election. And these aren't major errors. Our General Assembly
- 4:47Speaker 3: has done a wonderful job creating our election laws on
- 4:50Speaker 3: the local level that allows for mistakes to be fixed.
- 4:54Speaker 3: There are very few things, very few mistakes that can't
- 4:58Speaker 3: be fixed by a comp an election administrator.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Talking to you, David Shelton, as candidate for Secretary of
- 5:05Speaker 1: State for the Republicans, he will be there at the convention.
- 5:10Speaker 1: When you decided to run, and you decided a while ago,
- 5:13Speaker 1: and you knew that Diego Morales, the current Secretary of State,
- 5:17Speaker 1: was there. Clearly you looked at something and said, either
- 5:21Speaker 1: there's something that could be done better, or there's an
- 5:23Speaker 1: issue with the current person, which one was.
- 5:26Speaker 2: It was a little of both.
- 5:30Speaker 3: A lot of issues that I saw that just turned
- 5:33Speaker 3: my stomach was the current office holder taking victory laps
- 5:36Speaker 3: on things that your local administrators have been doing for
- 5:39Speaker 3: a number of years. You know, he made the claim
- 5:41Speaker 3: that he removed over seven hundred thousand voters from our
- 5:43Speaker 3: voter rules. Well, that's a biennial process called voteralist maintenance.
- 5:47Speaker 3: We've been doing it for a number of years. There's
- 5:49Speaker 3: no hands on involvement by the Secretary of State's office.
- 5:54Speaker 3: The aforementioned training, you know, he promised to train clerks,
- 5:58Speaker 3: that never materialized. I received phone calls every single day
- 6:02Speaker 3: from county clerks, from county chairmen, from county election board members,
- 6:06Speaker 3: from all over the state every single day. I feel
- 6:09Speaker 3: like at times I'm already to depack those Secretary of
- 6:11Speaker 3: State when it comes to knowledge and education on our
- 6:13Speaker 3: election process.
- 6:16Speaker 2: So now you head in into the convention and so
- 6:21Speaker 2: we're all we all understand each other. David, it just
- 6:24Speaker 2: got wild. I mean, it's going.
- 6:26Speaker 1: To be a very very interesting show goes on here.
- 6:31Speaker 1: First to the idea of the endorsements. Now you have
- 6:34Speaker 1: the endorsement of a county lawson, the former Secretary of State.
- 6:39Speaker 2: You have that endorsement.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I believe you still have that endorsement's there on your
- 6:42Speaker 1: website Shelton sah G L t O N Shelton Findiana
- 6:46Speaker 1: dot com.
- 6:47Speaker 2: But you've seen a lot.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Of endorsements get pulled from Diego Morales and moved to
- 6:51Speaker 1: a competitor, Max signaling what is your story for the delegates?
- 6:58Speaker 3: Well, my sources of the delegate says, you know, I
- 7:00Speaker 3: have been running for over a year now, I'm running
- 7:03Speaker 3: a marathon. I'm not going to parachute in for a
- 7:05Speaker 3: last minute sprint. If you have questions about who you
- 7:09Speaker 3: think would be best to administer your elections, talk to
- 7:12Speaker 3: your local election administrator. I have the endorsement of over
- 7:15Speaker 3: half of the Indiana Republican clerks, over one hundred overall
- 7:20Speaker 3: of local elected officials. Far too often local government experiences
- 7:26Speaker 3: is discounted on a state level or even a national level.
- 7:30Speaker 3: But that's where you learn how things actually work. I
- 7:33Speaker 3: have that experience. That's what I bring to the table.
- 7:37Speaker 1: But we're we're not having a conversation for the general electorate.
- 7:40Speaker 1: We're having a conversation for the delegates. And if I've
- 7:42Speaker 1: learned anything it's that the delegates are different.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:47Speaker 1: The way they approach it is different, the way they
- 7:49Speaker 1: engage is different. This is you know, this isn't a
- 7:53Speaker 1: conversation about the general public. What do you believe is
- 7:57Speaker 1: moving them in your conversation. And how with all now
- 8:01Speaker 1: the new scrutiny, the new press on this convention and
- 8:06Speaker 1: on this race, how do you convince the delegates that
- 8:09Speaker 1: the hot hands should be with you?
- 8:11Speaker 3: Well, you just have to convince them that I am
- 8:14Speaker 3: the one with the actual knowledge and experience. I'm not
- 8:16Speaker 3: going to gaslight them on button emotional issues. I can
- 8:21Speaker 3: either have a plan or can come up with a
- 8:23Speaker 3: plan very quickly. I'm very thoughtful, and I am very
- 8:31Speaker 3: what's my train of thought there? I am thoughtful of
- 8:33Speaker 3: my deliberations when it comes to coming to resolutions to
- 8:37Speaker 3: issues that may arise. I pride myself in being a
- 8:40Speaker 3: problem solver, and that's a message I'm going to try
- 8:43Speaker 3: to convey to the delegates.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Doesn't seem to me you lost your train of thought there?
- 8:46Speaker 2: It was just fine.
- 8:48Speaker 1: But we are talking a lot about elections talking to
- 8:51Speaker 1: David Shelton, candidate for Secretary of State in Indiana Shelton
- 8:56Speaker 1: for Indiana dot Com.
- 8:59Speaker 2: But there are other things to say, acutea state does.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Is this all about election integrity, which certainly is fine,
- 9:07Speaker 1: or are there other things that you want to see
- 9:09Speaker 1: handled and fixed?
- 9:12Speaker 3: Well? Absolutely, I mean you have oversight over business filings
- 9:16Speaker 3: and into your entity reports over auto dealerships. You have securities,
- 9:21Speaker 3: you have the notaries, licenses are issued at office. You know,
- 9:26Speaker 3: I am becoming the best informed candidate on all of
- 9:29Speaker 3: these issues. You know. Here lately, we're seeing a lot
- 9:32Speaker 3: of chatter online about trucking companies in Indiana and what
- 9:35Speaker 3: can be done. I mean, there's a lot that can
- 9:38Speaker 3: be done, but as of right now, as we are speaking,
- 9:41Speaker 3: the Secretary of State's Office has no real investigation investigative authority.
- 9:46Speaker 3: They have no enforcement authority whatsoever. You know, we could
- 9:50Speaker 3: go and partner with our federal partners, the Federal Motor
- 9:53Speaker 3: Carrier Safety Administration, the Commercial Safety Administration.
- 9:56Speaker 2: There's a lot that.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Can be done to help protect hoosiers, but as of
- 10:00Speaker 3: right now, we don't have the authority to do anything
- 10:03Speaker 3: about it. I mean, I wish there was something we
- 10:05Speaker 3: could do, maybe another department. Well, yeah, there is another
- 10:09Speaker 3: office that can do that. It's called the Attorney General's Office.
- 10:12Speaker 3: They handle consumer complaints. They have that investigative, that enforcement authority.
- 10:17Speaker 3: So you know, I'm seeing a lot of these topics
- 10:20Speaker 3: being brought up. They're trying to gaslight us again, Tony.
- 10:24Speaker 3: They're they're they're trying to pander to the base. I
- 10:28Speaker 3: want to stick to the facts. I know what the
- 10:30Speaker 3: job requires and that's what I want to do. Now,
- 10:34Speaker 3: if the will of the people is they want additional oversight,
- 10:38Speaker 3: additional regulations, well we'll do that. But you know, sometimes
- 10:42Speaker 3: you need to take taking a consideration. You know, be
- 10:45Speaker 3: careful what you what you ask for. You know political physics,
- 10:49Speaker 3: every action has an opposite and equal reaction to it.
- 10:52Speaker 3: You know, every every state in the nation is competing
- 10:55Speaker 3: to lower regulations to attract businesses. Are we closing Indiana
- 11:00Speaker 3: to potential businesses?
- 11:01Speaker 2: Now?
- 11:01Speaker 3: Do we have a problem with the trucking industry? Absolutely
- 11:04Speaker 3: we do. We need the General Assembly to pass loss
- 11:07Speaker 3: you can only have one trucking company registered to a
- 11:10Speaker 3: physical address. I think that's a reasonable solution, or part
- 11:14Speaker 3: of a solution to the bigger problem. There's a lot
- 11:17Speaker 3: that can be done, Tony. I'm not going to tell
- 11:20Speaker 3: you I know everything about everything. All I can tell
- 11:23Speaker 3: you is I will learn about all the issues as
- 11:25Speaker 3: they come. I will surround myself with the best people
- 11:28Speaker 3: possible who aren't related to me.
- 11:32Speaker 2: David Shelton, that was a good line.
- 11:34Speaker 1: By the way, David Shelton Shelton for Indiana dot Com
- 11:38Speaker 1: running for a Secretary of State.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Appreciate you taking the time to be with us. Matt Beart,
- 11:44Speaker 2: do we have time? Can we hit a quick traffic
- 11:46Speaker 2: right now with the producer Carl
