- 0:07SPEAKER_00: She is the founder of the Virtual Podcast Studio.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: She helps successful business owners turn their voice Jen,
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: hi.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: So nice to finally talk to you.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: And I see people are already joining.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: See, I told you, you're already popular.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: I'm a good company, I believe.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I hope I won't disappoint.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Jen, I'm really happy to discuss a lot of podcasting topics because I have a selfish reason.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: And the selfish reason is I have a podcast.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And I thought, Natasha, how can you get a one-hour consulting for free?
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I'm joking.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Let's get Jen.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: So I thought I can get this for me and for anyone who's joining us.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: So jokes aside, Jen.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: So let's start with your top tips for a podcaster, let's say like myself.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: I've been running my podcast for almost four years now.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: I have 123 episodes.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Congratulations.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you how I...
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Barely monetize it, but I monetize it some, but I would like to hear from you.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: What are the top tips to monetize your podcast,
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: especially if you're like a solopreneur like myself,
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: you're not Joe Rogan, all of that.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: So the floor is yours.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: And I am literally standing on the floor.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: This is how I roll.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: If you are joining us live, welcome.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: And if you are watching the replay, welcome.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: You can always drop a comment below the replay and put your question in there
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: about what you want to know about monetizing a podcast.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: So if something comes up today and it doesn't fully answer the question
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: that you have, my DMs are open so you can shoot me a DM.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: And of course, you're welcome to join me inside of the studio as a free or paid subscriber.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Now, let me start with a lot of people think about monetization and Okay,
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: I'm going to go get sponsorships.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: I'm going to have certain local vendors pay me for commercials.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: And they don't spend nearly as much time on commercials.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: And what I mean by that is that there are really three things that you need to monetize.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: And before I share them, I'm curious, you are popping in here live.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: What do you want to know?
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: You came here because you saw the title about a profitable podcast.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: So you're here for a reason.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: What do you want to know about a profitable podcast?
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: And then we'll keep our eye on the chat and include you in the conversation.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: Okay, three things your podcast needs to monetize.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Every episode needs a job.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Every episode needs a job.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: So when you are creating an episode, you first must answer two questions.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: What is the business purpose of this episode?
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: So how is it going to make me money?
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: And what is the listener win?
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: So you must tune the radio station to WIIFM, what's in it for me?
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: So your audience very quickly understands how Just like what we're doing here,
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: we're letting you know you are here to learn more
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: about how you can monetize your podcast.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: And the dog is clearly loving it, so that's great.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Yes, make more money so I can get more food.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: All right, we're going to do it.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: We're going to do it.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: So your business purpose and the listener wins.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: So every episode has a job to do.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: And then in each episode,
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: your audience,
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: your ideal client,
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: think about your one ideal client,
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: the client you love working with,
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: How will they recognize themselves in your episode?
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: How will they know that it's connected to the problem that they have?
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: And then you need to give your client, your listener, your audience one clear next step.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Not 10, not go to my website,
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: not go to Instagram,
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: not go here and there,
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: follow me,
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: download this, download that, listen to this episode, but one clear call to action.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: What is it that you're wanting them to do?
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Which goes right back around to the first point,
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: So, if you think about 90 days from now, what do you have coming up?
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: What are your offers?
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: And then your episode content naturally leads into those offers.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: So, those are the top three.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Every episode needs a job.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Your listener must recognize herself before she will respond.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: And then you've got to give your ideal client one clear next step.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's unpack this.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: So give each episode a job.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: So for me,
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: when I pick the guests,
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: I pick them because I like their pitch and I want to learn from them and I want
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: the audience to learn from them.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: I don't have a job in mind.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: And for me, I enjoy the conversation.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: I learn from it.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And...
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: That was more than enough for me.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: It will build my brand and I don't have a job for how I'm going to make money from it.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: The focus for me is how can I make this conversation as interesting as possible.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: So you're saying that I am not focused,
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: I'm not monetizing because I don't have a strategy per each episode.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: And the devil's advocate question is, should I?
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Should I or should I just enjoy the process and have fun without worrying about that?
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: And this is where one-to-one strategy comes into play,
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: where we sit down and we talk about what are the goals for your podcast?
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Because there are entrepreneurs who they want to create collaboration.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: So their whole goal is to expand their network.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: So for example,
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: if that's your goal,
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: and it sounds like that's what it is,
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: then your call to action is still going to have a business purpose that is going
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: to propel you to get future guests.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: So you might say something like,
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: If you enjoy this conversation and you know you are the next right guest for...
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, I don't remember the name of your podcast.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: What is the name of your podcast?
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: My podcast is called Read and Write with Natasha and I interview authors
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: and publishers and people.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: So I can tie it easily to my business, but I don't because maybe I'm not smart enough.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: I'm more focused on conversations than business and maybe that's why I'm not monetizing.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: I just complain.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: I don't do the...
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: So a lot of times what entrepreneurs,
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: when I listen to their episodes, I say you're not even giving a call to action.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: You're not clearly identifying what the listener win is and they don't know what
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: the next step is.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: So if they walk away from this and they don't know what to do next,
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: they're not going to do anything next.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: So when I,
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: even when I guess right now,
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: I've got a plan and I've got a call to action and the call to action is join
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: the studio.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: So right now I am working to get that orange check mark on Substack.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: And I am halfway there.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: So I definitely want to say, invite people into the studio.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: So that's my call to action.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: So I have a business purpose here.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: It's also collaboration.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: It's also network expansion.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: You get all of that as well.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: So there are people in your situation who are saying, I don't want to sell my stuff that way.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: I really want to grow my network right now.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: So that's not a wrong strategy.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: You just have to decide what is the right strategy for your business.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Does that help you?
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it helps.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: And I think I can achieve both easily.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, I can have a very nice conversation.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: I can have collaboration.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: And at the end, I can throw in a call to action.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: I don't throw in a call to action, honestly, because I'm lazy.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Or I don't have time.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: So what I do is I record it,
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: send it to an editor, and then I just upload it on Buzzsprout and I'm done.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: But...
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: I just wanted to reduce the friction because if I keep adding to it, I'm not going to do it.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: And so I just wanted it to keep going, to be consistent, so I kind of picked the easiest option.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: But I know there are ways around it where I can just record Like a dynamic audio and
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: then plug it in all or something like that.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: But you're right.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: I don't have any call to action.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: And by call to action, do you mean call to action in the show notes or a call to action in this?
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: That's the difference because what I read,
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: and correct me if I'm wrong, is nobody reads the show notes.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Well, some people do read the show notes.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: What you might be referring to is less than 1% actually click a link in the show notes.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah,
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: So they
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: might be reading them.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: When you're doing your job well, it doesn't matter if they read the show notes or not.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: They're going to be looking you up before they're ever done listening to the episode.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: They're going to hear enough and say, I want more of that.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Case in point, I have a client call, first client call later this afternoon.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: And let's see, it's Thursday.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: I just came off vacation.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: So the days are a little nutso for me.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: So I believe it was Monday she followed me and Tuesday she subscribed as
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: a free subscriber,
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: then became a paid subscriber and then bought a mini self-diagnostic tool I have and
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: then sent me a message saying, how do I work with you privately?
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: I didn't do anything, but listening to my, I didn't have any interaction with her.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: Uh, um, Except when she was asking me about private coaching.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: And I always welcome people to the studio.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: So that just initiates a conversation right from the get-go.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: But my mission when I welcome you in the studio is not to sell you a package.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: My mission is to know, hey, what do you need to know?
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: What's important to you?
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: How can I help you?
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: The studio serves a lot of different peoples in different paths on podcasting.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Some don't even have their own show,
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: their guests,
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: but they understand that when they're in a group of podcasters,
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: their network is gonna grow and they'll increase opportunities to get
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: on other shows.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: And they're gonna learn things about how to share their message because whether,
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: it doesn't matter what side of the microphone you're on,
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: you need to know how to talk about what you do in a way that people will remember.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Because when they remember you, they will refer you.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: And when they refer you, that's gonna impact your profits.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: So this is,
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: it's a whole signature system I have with memorability,
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: referability and profitability.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: And that's what we want.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: We want people to be able to talk about what we do,
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: not regurgitate our I help statement, But talk about what we do.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: So when we meet someone in our network and they say,
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: hey, I'm struggling with finishing my book, I'll say, well, do you know Natasha?
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: Because we've met, you see?
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: So I have a clear enough picture of what you do in order to refer you.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: So...
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: You mentioned that you use your podcast for setting your services.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: That's one part of it.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And what about the sponsorship aspect for a solopreneur?
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Do you think that's not feasible now because we're competing with the Joe Rogans?
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Where do you stand when it comes?
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: And by the way, I just sold my first sponsor like an hour ago.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Congratulations.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: And it's a small company and I gave them an introductory offer.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: And yeah, and the reason this happened is after almost four years,
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: I decided it's time to start approaching sponsors, but I have not done that in the past.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: So sponsorship, it's still an option.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: I'm playing with it for smaller podcasters or like niche podcasters like myself.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Do you agree or you think the focus mostly is going to be on selling your services?
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: So inside of the studio, I have 10 commandments to the Mic Trout Mastery method of podcasting.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Commandment number eight is sell your own stuff.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: So I promote selling your own stuff.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: That doesn't mean you can't have sponsorships.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: That doesn't mean you can't do what you decided to do.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: The thing is,
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: is that You've got to have,
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: well, right now, Substack, yesterday, they just changed everything updated.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: So now they have IAB reporting.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: So they've got real numbers that sponsors would be happy with.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: What's IAB reporting?
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: It's basically a way to measure the downloads for each episode of your podcast.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: And previous to that.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Substack was over-counting.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: So if you looked at your dashboard for your downloads before yesterday,
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: they were a lot higher than what they became yesterday because they implemented
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: a new standard.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: And that was a hiccup for a lot of entrepreneurs because sponsors want to see your numbers.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: They want to see your listen-through rates.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: How long is your audience listening to the full episode?
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: They want to know how many downloads on average you're getting.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: And if you're a really niche audience,
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: if there's something that a sponsor has that it's hard for them
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: to reach their niche audience, they might pay you more.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: So don't get hung up on the number of downloads, okay?
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: It's a measurement,
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: but it's not the only measurement that you need to learn or to assess whether
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: or not you should have sponsorships.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: So you need to decide.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: And You also need to pitch well.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: You need to sell yourself well because you know what your podcast is designed to do.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: And when a sponsor listens to it,
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: they're going to either agree or disagree with you and say,
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: oh yeah,
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: this is where I want to go ahead and I want my name associated
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: with this other person's name.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: The reason why I promote commandment number eight,
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: sell your own stuff inside of the studio,
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: is because you can make way more money in way less time by selling your own stuff.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: It's a natural fit and there's no competition.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: You aren't redirecting your audience's attention to go buy something else.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: It's a business decision, Natasha.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: So it's not right for everyone.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Hear me on that.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: So I'm not going to say that,
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: oh, yes, you should avoid sponsorships or, oh, no, only go sponsorships.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: All of this is a business decision.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: So we're all going to make a different decision based on where we are
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: in our businesses, based on what our goals are for our podcasts.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: And this is, incidentally, the thing that podcasters miss the most.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: They don't take the time to assess, what do I want my podcast to do for my business?
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: And that's why it's four years in before they ever think about, wait, how do I monetize this?
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: I think the reason for many podcasters,
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: and I teach people how to start a podcast, not to monetize.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: I refer them to you when it comes to monetizing.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: We can collaborate on that.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Many people, including myself when I first started, we were very overwhelmed by the tech.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: And it's a whole new world.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: I remember when I first started,
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: that was I think before AI and before all of that,
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: I just wrote how to start a podcast.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: And then the first thing that popped on the Google I sponsored, Buzzsprout.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: I don't even have time.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: I had three children, COVID, the baby shouting, whatever, a dog barking.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Click on Buzzsprout.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Pay.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Done.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: And that was it.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: And then I basically just learned as I went.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: And I'm still learning.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: And I just got hooked.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: And I got hooked on the conversations.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: And I think because of my background.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: And it just like after each episode, I get this high.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: And this high is because when you talk to like-minded people like yourself.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: And for me, that hour is like the gateway drug to podcasting, if you want to put it that
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: way.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: So if it is the drug,
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: if it is what you love to do,
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: why not get paid more for it by issuing a call to action?
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: So, let's be practical.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Let's be practical.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: Because we all start this way.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, we all do.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: My first year of podcasting,
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: 52 weeks, Natasha, 52 weeks, 1,066 downloads and zero cash, zero cash.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: In fact, negative profit, right?
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: Because of the time and the energy.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: All of that put in and I couldn't figure it out.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: So I went to work to figure it out.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, this is a thing.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: This has got to be a thing.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: And I love it.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: I love podcasting.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: So how can I make this work for my business?
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: So then I stepped back and started doing all the things that would have been
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: the best thing to do at the beginning is to really make decisions based on
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: where you are in your business.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: So if you're a brand new entrepreneur, launching a podcast is It's riskier.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: And here's why.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: It's riskier because if you don't have a proven offer,
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: if you don't know how to talk about what you do,
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: if you can't sell, then it's going to be very difficult on your podcast.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: So this is why I recommend for entrepreneurs with a proven offer.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: This is what I say.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: I work with successful entrepreneurs with a proven offer.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: That means you've sold something.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: You've sold a course.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: You've You've sold a webinar,
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: whatever it is, so you know you can sell this thing that your ideal client wants it.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: So then you can use your podcast to direct them there naturally.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: My new word is ka-chunk.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: It's not a, okay,
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: you're talking about what you're doing and then ka-chunk,
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: here's my call to action, go buy my thing.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: No, it's a natural.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: So if you're experiencing blah, blah, blah, then the next step is the thing that you sell.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: So you use the episode to set it up in that way.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: And that's exactly the work that Cindy is doing.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: She's doing great work.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: Her podcast is going to relaunch soon and it's going to be awesome.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: And the work is hard.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: And Cindy, you probably can drop in the chat here.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: Hi, Cindy.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: The work is hard.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: And well, I'll stop there.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: You had a question.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: But like the audience, when I hear from you, not to hear me pontificating.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Look, think of me as the Sherpa guiding the conversation.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: That's what... And we're all climbing the Himalayas of podcasting, the Everest.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: So, you...
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: So I've been selling my offers, which is, you know, I kind of surprised myself.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: I did not see that coming,
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: but it took years until things clicked and I understood what I'm selling.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: But I have not translated that into the podcast.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: So if I want to,
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: let's say,
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: I want to sell my book coaching services or my ghostwriting services
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: or even my small imprint where I help people self-publish.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: Where in the podcast where I put that is at the beginning, in the end, the mid?
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: And then there's through Buzzsprout now,
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: there is something called the dynamic audio where you record it once and
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: then you can plug it into all the episodes and you can pick.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Where would you put that?
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Like when I listen to Joe Rogan,
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: he would have like,
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: I don't know,
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: maybe five minutes of ad, but we keep listening because he's Joe Rogan, right?
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: So, but people might like, I don't want to listen to ad.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: They're going to stop listening.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: So where would you put that in a, let's say, 30 minute episode?
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: It depends.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: And I'm not being coy and not avoiding answering the question that you're asking.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: So I also promote that I also teach my clients
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: that you don't have pre-recorded intros and outros.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: That each episode stands on its own and you're a natural introduction of yourself.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: So when you listen to the Substack Podcast Studio,
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: for example, I'm going to start out and I'm going to give you a hook.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: And the whole idea is to get your attention and to let you know what's happening in
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: the episode and why you ought to stick around.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: And I have to make you care.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: I have to make you want that, okay?
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: So I'm doing work to ensure that my openers are strong, really, really strong.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: So I'm not going to pitch you a thing.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: We have to remember that when someone presses play on our podcast, they're a new someone.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Every episode, they're a new someone.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: So they've never heard us before.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: So why on earth would they buy our thing,
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: especially in today's environment where everyone is highly skeptical?
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: They have zero reason to buy.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: And let's just kick Joe Rogan and all the others out of the room.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: This is not the kind of podcasting that we're doing.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: We are doing niche podcasting.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: We don't need tens of thousands of listeners.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: Another thing I promote is get your first 100 loyal listeners that you're actually
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: in conversation with your first 100 loyal listeners that you're connecting in
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: the chat with them,
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: that you're in email with them, that you're seeing them locally at events.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: Get your first 100 loyal listeners.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: How do you know who listens?
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: I don't know who listens to my podcast.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so this is the challenge with Buzzsprout versus Substack,
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: and this is the beauty of Substack.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: So this is why I recently launched a Substack Podcast Studio.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: I killed my old podcast, Simplify Podcasting, 350-some episodes.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: I killed it.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: I said, okay, we're done here.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: I am combining Substack and podcasting because I could see what was happening now.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: And that so many entrepreneurs were moving over to Substack.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: So now people inside the studio are wrestling with that.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Do I just want to forward my RSS feed to Substack?
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Or do I want to move it completely over?
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: And again, that's a business decision.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: What makes the most sense for you to do?
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: There are pluses and minuses to both.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: And one of those is what you said, dynamic ads.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: So right now, Substack doesn't have dynamic ads.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: But look, Substack is always up leveling.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: This is why I love Substack.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: They're always creating new tools for us to use.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: That's why it can feel overwhelming.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: So dynamic ads may come for Substack.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: The thing about dynamic ads is it's not quite the natural flow.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: But there is a place for dynamic ads.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: There is a place for dynamic ads.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: But let's go back to your new listener is listening.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: They don't know who you are.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: So they don't have any reason to buy from you yet.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: So you've got to lead them on that journey.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: And you do have to issue calls to action so they can begin to learn what you sell.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: So, for example, my strategy is I have at least three calls to action in my podcast episodes.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: At least three.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: And the first one is an easy lift.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: It's a free thing.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: So I just say become a free subscriber to the Substack Podcast Studio
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: and invite them in.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: And then later on,
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: I have what I call a heavy lift where there's an exchange of money and time
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: for whatever it is that I'm offering.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: Now, I'm in a beautiful, sweet season.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: I've never been in this season before where my offer is exactly the same.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: Go to thevirtualpodcastschool.com forward slash Substack and subscribe.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: And wherever you are in the tier, upgrade to the next level.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: If you want this, this is what we do inside the paid tiers of the studio.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: So for example, next week I'm having this Substack podcast sprint.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: It's a five-day sprint.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: And I've been promoting it, not heavily, but I've been promoting it.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: And I'm also sharing that in my podcast episodes and saying,
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: hey, this is exactly the thing, the thing I was talking about on the episode.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: This is exactly the thing we're covering inside of the Sprint.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: It's for paid subscribers only.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: $99 for the year.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: It's a no-brainer.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: In one week, well, one day, you're going to get your $99 worth and then some.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: So that's how I'm positioning my podcast to say, okay, These are my calls to action.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: I have an easy lift,
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: a freebie kind of thing, and then a heavy lift that I repeat a couple of times.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: That's how I promote the work that I'm doing.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: So they're not in the same place every time.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: And again, I don't hit, I don't insert, here's my intro.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: I intro myself and I make it tie to the content that I'm talking about.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: So can I give you an example?
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Yes, please.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: So I'm a recovered certified public accountant.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: So I can make fun of that.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: So if I'm talking about managing the finances associated with your podcast,
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: I would say,
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: hey there,
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: I'm Jen Rogers,
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: host of the Substack Podcast Studio and founder of the Virtual Podcast School.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: I founded the Virtual Podcast School
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: because far too many indie podcasters were We're not managing their resources well
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: when it came to their podcast.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: As a recovered certified public accountant, I know exactly what I'm talking about.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: I love spreadsheets, columns and rows.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Give them to me.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: And while we're not going to go into that in today's episode,
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: number blah, blah,
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: blah of the Substack Podcast Studio,
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: what we are going to cover is boom, boom, and boom.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: This is great.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: So...
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Based on what you said, what do you think is the most efficient structure of the podcast?
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: This is how I structure mine and feel free to tear it down.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: I have a thick skin, so whatever.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to get upset.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: So it starts, for me, it starts with a hook.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: And the hook is not from me.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: It's from the guests.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: And then it starts with a little bit of music that I bought.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: And it kind of has like...
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Kind of Middle Eastern flavor, just to know what they're getting into.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: So we have like that kind of, you know, the Middle Eastern flavor, then the hook.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: Then I would say, hi, welcome to blah, blah, blah.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: This is a podcast about this.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: And then we would go to me saying, hi, everyone.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the episode I have today, this person.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: And then it's around half an hour and it ends with like,
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: thank you for whatever review my podcast.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: I don't even tell them to subscribe because I'm stupid.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: You're not stupid.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: So yeah, tear it down.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: I don't want to tear it down, but let's consider.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: The first thing to point out is that when you have a guest on your show,
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: you're giving your power away.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: You are dividing your audience's attention and you're saying,
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: okay, I'm bringing on this expert and because of the
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Trust you've established with your audience.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: I'm on your coattails right now.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: Now, it's up to me to stay there.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: It's up to me to do my job as a guest to be edutaining,
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: to educate and to entertain simultaneously and to know what the heck it is
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: that you wanted your audience to walk away with by the end of our time together.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: And I asked you that specific question.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: What do you want them to walk away with in understanding how to earn profits from your podcast?
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: How are we doing so far?
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: Are we on track for
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: what we set it up?
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: What would you say?
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: I would say that I want my audience or aspiring authors or authors to get tips
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: on writing habits, publishing, tips, self-publishing, marketing.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: When I first started, I was all over the place.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: We would talk about the book,
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: like tell me the plot and whatever,
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: which is, you know, some podcasts are focused on the plot and the book.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: But mine...
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: But it kind of gravitated more towards the techniques and the habits
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: of writing rather than the story itself.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: And that makes it more of a business,
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: has a more business edge without me realizing it,
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: that it's actually I'm pivoting towards that because that's I also wanted to learn
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: that.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: So my questions is because I am asking you here is the same way I ask my guests
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: because I really want to learn from you.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: And as if we're having coffee and I just turn the camera on.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: This is my approach, right?
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: And that's why I make it very, very casual.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: So that's what I wanted to come out after they finish is to...
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: Like habits, tricks,
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: techniques,
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: how to improve their author career,
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: whether through sales,
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: whether through improving their writing, whether through marketing, all of that.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: That's kind of what I...
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: So my style is to have guests.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: And so this is how I started.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: I kind of dabbled, like, shall I go solo?
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: You know, I just thought about it and I forgot about it.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: So after our time together, I suspect you're going to think about it a little bit differently.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: And I'm definitely going to recommend that you join us for the sprint next week
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: because that will help you clarify the decision.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: I'm sold.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: Here is my credit card.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: See how easy that is?
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: It's not salesy.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: And this is a lot of podcasters still,
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: even when they are experienced in selling outside of a podcast,
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: they feel awkward selling on the podcast.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: So when you're talking about,
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: yeah, when you're giving tips and tricks, it's more than that, right?
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: Listen, it's 11 o'clock at night and you finally got that baby to bed.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: Finally.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: This is the only time of day you have to write.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: And you've got about 45 minutes before your head hits your desk.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: In this episode, I'm going to help you understand how you can make the most of that 45 minutes.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: So you can, I don't know, whatever you would say.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: So you can get your book published,
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: market your book properly,
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: whatever it is that you would say that would naturally lead to your offer.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: So then you do the episode and you're giving,
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: let's say you give the first, okay, here's something I want you to consider.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: So it's a lot like,
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Me talking to you about,
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: listen, when you have a guest on, here's something to consider.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: The very first voice your audience needs to hear
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: is yours, not your guest, yours.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: Remember,
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: you always have a new podcast listener and you want to let them know they're in
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: the right place.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: So when they're hearing somebody else's voice and then they hear yours,
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: they're not sure who the host is now until you clue them in.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: So we don't want a confused audience because when they're confused, they don't listen.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: They don't They don't know who you are.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: So you always want to be the one that shows up first, that your audience hears first.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: Your voice is the voice of the show, and you want to ensure that you start out on brand.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: So whenever I do a live, I'm not letting my guests talk first.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: In fact,
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: I'm giving them, hey,
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: here's the outline of how the live is going to go,
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: and here's the outcome that we're shooting for.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: We don't have it scripted.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: I don't mean that,
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: but we have intention to And I have a written intro that I make sure, okay,
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: I want to make sure I cover these kind of things in the intro so people know they're
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: in the right place.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: It's the same thing we do on our podcast.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: We've got to let people know what the win is in it for them.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, we've got 14 people on the live right now.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: And if you're listening to this later on,
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: we won't know the numbers until Natasha sees the,
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: I guess the downloads, whatever it's going to be for this live.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: But it's something that you want to continue.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: It's evergreen.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: So it's something that you want to continue to bring clients to you.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: And that's why when the video starts, you want to be the first one talking on the live.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: When your audio starts, you want to be the first one that your audience hears.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: So then you let them know You hook them.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: You let them know they're in the right place.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: You share your credentials, why you're the right person to lead them on this journey.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: And then you invite them into an easy lift offer, something free.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: Hey, if you're not following along on Substack yet, go to blah, blah, blah.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: Follow me on Substack.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: So the reason I...
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: Start with the guest, the hook of the guest, not for me, for a number of reasons.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: One is because I've seen it in other podcasts,
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: like other, I think the Diary of the CEO guy, this is how he starts his podcast.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: But let me jump in and say, that's not who we are.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: We're not there yet.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: When you get there, you can do anything you want.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: So when we're looking at somebody at that level, they're very different rules.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: For us right now,
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: creating connection with our audience, we've got to do some things differently.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: So Joe Rogan and Diary of a CEO, look, you can love the podcast and that's great.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: They are established and it's very different what they do and how they start
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: and they can do anything they want.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: For us, you can do, after you get to 500,000 downloads, you can do whatever you want.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: But let's get you to 500,000 downloads where you're establishing your authority,
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: your credentials,
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: you're building your audience in a way that is more audience focused
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: than anything else.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: So again, you are finding, a podcast is top of funnel, middle of funnel, and bottom of funnel.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: So for all your top of funnels where they're just meeting you,
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: I've This is what I promote in the studio.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: I want them to hear you, not
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: anyone else.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: So how would the hook be with me if I am not the guest?
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: I would say, hi, I don't want to have the same intro all the time.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, you don't.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: Yes, you're right.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I want the hook.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: So the hook would be me saying, hi, I had a fascinating conversation with this guy and...
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: No.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: No.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: What would be the hook?
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: Because nobody cares.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: They don't care what you thought about him yet.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: They want to know whether they care.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: So we need to bring them in.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: It's a lot of storytelling in that way.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: So you and I were sharing something in the chat messages going back and forth.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: I might start an episode out like this, Natasha.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: Not every person listening to your podcast is ready for the same next step.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: Some are just realizing their show has a problem.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: Some know exactly what's broken.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: But the tech, it's overwhelming and they don't really have a good plan to fix what's broken.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: And some, well,
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: they're ready to fix it,
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: but they don't know who it is is the right person to help them fix it.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: So when you give every listener in your audience the same call to action,
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: you make them work way too hard or you ask them to make a decision they're not ready
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: to make.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: Instead, your job is not to shove everyone toward the same offer.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Your job is to help the right next person make the right next step.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: Hey there, I'm Jen Rogers, host of the Substack Podcast Studio, blah, blah, blah.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: And if you want to know how to attract your ideal client on the five stages of
- 35:33SPEAKER_01: the buyer journey, you are in exactly the right place.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: We're going to get into it, blah, blah, blah.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: I see.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: So basically, you discuss the idea.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: You talk about the idea that you discussed with the guest.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: And you can say, joining me today is to talk about that.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: And don't read some long bio.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: And I told you that.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: I said, don't read that bio.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: And again, I can't say this enough.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: Until people have a reason to care.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: They don't care.
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: So reading a long bio doesn't work.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: So when I speak on stages,
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: for example,
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: I have a So when I gave a talk,
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: gosh, it's been a few years ago, but I gave a talk that had to do with transitions.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: And so basically you're home alone now, your kids, they've gone off to college.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: And I asked, I said, I gave the MC three different questions.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: And one of them is, have you ever opened up the dryer?
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: And as you're folding
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: the clothes,
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: you cry over
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: one sock and And that has to do with missing your kid.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: They never had all their socks in the laundry, that kind of thing.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: So I'm going to set something up where the audience is thinking, wait, what?
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: You're not going to say,
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: hey, let me introduce Jen Rogers, blah, blah, blah, boring, boring, boring.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Instead, It's a hook to engage the audience.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: It's a pattern interrupt.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: And that's exactly what we want to do with our openers.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: We want to have a pattern interrupt.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: So then when we're introducing our guests,
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: what I do,
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: in fact,
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: you can listen to the episode that dropped today,
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: episode number 22 of the Substack Podcast Studio.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: And in there, I'm interviewing my client, Patrick LaRose.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: And I do the opener.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: I'm the first voice.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: And this is, he was an excellent guest, by the way, excellent guest.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: And oh, he just popped into, hey, Patrick.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: And what I did is I took a quote that he had, and I put it there.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: And I said, here's how Patrick said it.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: And then you hear his voice.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: And then back to me,
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: and I'm letting you know you're in the right place,
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: what you're going to walk away with,
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: all of that,
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: who I am, why I'm qualified to Be with you right now and teach on this subject.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: And then we're going to get into the interview.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: Does that help?
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: But for me,
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking of the time commitment to do all of that,
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: especially for busy entrepreneurs or solopreneurs who are juggling multiple things.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: So you have to record.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: Do you do the editing yourself or do you outsource?
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: So I am somewhat anal.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: I am not somewhat.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: I'm anal about that.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: I like it a certain way.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: And in 2027, I'm going to evaluate if I can hand it off.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: OK, so right now I'm doing my own stuff.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: It's worth to edit.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: But I will tell you from start to finish,
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: from conception of idea to recording to editing to putting it on Substack
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: for release day is about four hours.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: It's a lot of time.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: It is a lot of time.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: And I'm also earning quite a good income from those four hours
- 38:37SPEAKER_01: because I'm issuing calls to action that direct people to join the studio.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: I'm serving them.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: See, even if you never join the studio, you walk away from the episode with a win.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: You always walk away with a win because it goes back to the business purpose is,
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: okay, I want to offer this.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: And the listener win is this.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: What does the listener win?
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: The listener win is, hey,
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: if you've been struggling with marketing your book,
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Today, we're gonna cover blah, blah, blah.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: And by the end of our time together,
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: you're gonna know Three to five things you can do to move your book down
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: the marketing road.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'd have to wordsmith it.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: I need to know a little bit more about what you do.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: But that's how I would do it.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: I absolutely would do it that way.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: So when I have a guest,
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: and again,
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: the episode 22 that dropped today and 21 dropped yesterday,
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: I broke the interview in two parts because it was long, but it was so rich.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: It was so good.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: So I did a different intro for both days.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: I'm going to still set it up.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: And I take the time to do that.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: And I have a responsibility for my guests to make them look and sound as good as possible.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: So I'm definitely going to edit.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: I'm going to take out some verbal fillers that they have.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: I'm going to do a few things.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: And I'm also going to, of course, share their links to their stuff.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: So I'm collaborating with them
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: because what they're doing is they've given me content
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: and they've also given me credibility because they're saying,
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: Hey, when I work with Jen, fill in the blank, this is what I experienced.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: So they're answering some of those common questions that our ideal clients have.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: That's why I just,
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: someone asked me, well, I get pitched to guests for people to guest all the time.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: And I mostly ignore them.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: Now on Substack,
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: when I get a DM,
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: and it's not a slimy one,
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: I don't get many slimy ones,
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: but when I get a non-slimy request to guest,
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: I let them know actually my philosophy is that I interview my clients as guests.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: So I don't have other guests.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: Now, every once in a while, will I?
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: I'm sure I will.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: But not right now.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: I'm 22 episodes in, in the Substack podcast studio.
- 40:35SPEAKER_01: Zero guests.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Zero guests outside of my clients.
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: How did you get into podcasting?
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: And did you have a podcast before the Substack Studio?
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: Or how did you do that?
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mentioned that.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: So I've been podcasting since 2020.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: The world shifted, of course, in 2020.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: I did not know at the beginning that I was going to launch a podcast.
- 41:00SPEAKER_01: I was a new entrepreneur, newer entrepreneur.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: And my coach told me not to launch a podcast.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: And I said, I'm launching a podcast anyway.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: And really, I was one angry stepmom.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: I was newly remarried.
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: And I was struggling.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: I was really, really struggling with integrating our families.
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: And we were dealing with some toxicity from our ex-spouses.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: And I couldn't find the help that I was looking for.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: So I decided I was going to create the help.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: The thing is, hurting people don't really help people.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: That's why the first year, 1,066 downloads in 52 weeks.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: I wasn't doing anything wrong per se.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, the intent was there, but the strategy behind it was not.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: Having offers to sell was not.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: Naturally inviting people to come into work with me, that was not natural.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: I would record,
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: it would take me 30 to 45 minutes sometimes to get out one or two sentences of
- 41:54SPEAKER_01: a call to action because I was so uncomfortable.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: Guests on shows instead.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: But you have to have a good offer.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: And when you're new, you haven't proven it yet.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: See, that's the thing.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: I want to pivot a bit and ask about marketing.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: So the market now is saturated with tons of podcasts.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: And there's a book once,
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: oh yeah,
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: when I wanted to launch my podcast,
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: I bought a book I found at Barnes & Noble called Everyone Has a Podcast.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: And that's what it feels.
- 42:53SPEAKER_00: But, you know, many of them don't even continue.
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: They're not consistent.
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: But how do you market your podcast that people can actually find you?
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: I put reels on social media and whatever,
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: but what do you think is your strategy to market your podcast
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: and how do you advise your clients?
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Well, I know what my strategy is.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: And when I work with clients, again, we evaluate what are you doing right now?
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: What is working for you right now?
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: So it's not that Facebook or LinkedIn or Insta is out,
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: although I have defected from all of those.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: And I'm on Substack.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: And I post periodically on those other two platforms.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: I'm all in on Substack.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: I decided, well, first I came here reluctantly in March.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: Okay, I wasn't going to come.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: I thought not another platform.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: And as I saw what was happening,
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: I recognized a deep need for podcasting expertise, leveraging Substack.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: Now, I started the way everybody else did.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: I listened to what was going on in the market and I began to connect with people
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: and see what they needed.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: And people wanted help with this.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: And I, gosh, I did a voiceover for an article.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: So I released a newsletter every Saturday and I did a voiceover for it.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: And I was hooked.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: I said, oh my gosh, this is so cool.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: I've got to put this in my podcast feed.
- 44:19SPEAKER_01: Well,
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: I don't have a podcast feed and that's how the Substack Podcast Studio was born.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: So let's talk about that.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: I didn't call it the Jen Rogers Show because nobody knows who I am.
- 44:29SPEAKER_01: They don't care.
- 44:30SPEAKER_01: And plus, there are so many Jen Rogers out there.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: Do you know how many Jen Rogers are out there?
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: The Jen Rogers, the virtual podcast school, the Substack Podcast Studio.
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: It's crazy town how many Jen Rogers are out there.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: But when you search for Substack or podcasting on Substack,
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: I'm going to come up because it's naturally in the name of my show.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: So when you're naming your show,
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: it's important that you have a name that is meaningful to your audience.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: What are they searching?
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: What are they looking for?
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: So many business owners want to name the show after themselves.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: But Nobody cares about you yet.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: This is the thing that I keep saying with a lot of love.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, they will care about you and they'll come back to you when you first serve them.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: So a podcast art that looks different.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: So you would look at all the book publishing or the book marketing, all of that.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: I would just go to Apple Podcasts.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: I would pull it up and see what's there and then do something that's different
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: than everything that you're seeing there so your cover stands out.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: Funny thing.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's certainly a God smile, I would say, for sure.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: One of my colors is orange and Substack is orange.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: So my art, the background of my art is orange.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: It's perfect.
- 45:41SPEAKER_01: It's a natural fit.
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: So it makes sense that orange, so there's an underlying psychology happening there.
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, Substack is orange.
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, we see that everywhere.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: So that's an extra bonus one for me,
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: but the name is,
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: and then also the description that you have for your podcast that people are going
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: to look at that.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: And they're also going to begin to look at your titles.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: So you have a lot of hurdles to get through before they ever hit play.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: And it happens instantly.
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: They look like or don't like.
- 46:13SPEAKER_01: So for you, go look.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: I don't know what your cover art looks like.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: Go look at your cover art and go do it in comparison to what others look like.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: And I know both Cindy and Patrick, we've revised the cover art.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: Cindy and I are still working on hers.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: And I've worked with other entrepreneurs as well because it is...
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: Well, it's why I didn't show up in my pajamas.
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: It's why I didn't show up with rollers in my hair when I came live.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, those are all things that you can do that are easy to do.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: Again, the Joe Rogan podcast, people know that.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: Diary of a CEO, people know that.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: And actually, think about that.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: You didn't call it the Stephen Bartlett Show.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: Diary of a CEO is a great name.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: It's a great podcast name.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: So hosting it through Substack versus outside of Substack.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:14SPEAKER_00: So what I did...
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: I have two podcasts.
- 47:17SPEAKER_00: I have one hosted on Buzzsprout and it's open for authors.
- 47:23SPEAKER_00: They don't have to be on Substack.
- 47:25SPEAKER_00: And then I have the Substack Writer's Salon, which is I go live like this.
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: And at first it was just I was going live and then I was like,
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: why can't I just turn it into a podcast?
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: So I have the live Substack podcast and then I have
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: the one that's recorded that's highly edited.
- 47:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: So your calls to action, Natasha, they can go like this from one podcast to the other.
- 47:52SPEAKER_01: I interviewed so-and-so about this very topic and I'm going to drop the link in the show notes.
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: So if you want to listen to this, then click the link in the show notes to go listen to that.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: And then same thing here.
- 48:03SPEAKER_01: If you have something that comes up.
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: But some may.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: And for your people, for your loyal listeners, they want to listen to everything that you do.
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: You want to cross-promote your own stuff.
- 48:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's interesting.
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, see, I'm doing a really bad job.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: You keep saying that.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: Let me share that wherever you are,
- 48:49SPEAKER_01: you have... Oh, yeah, you said something else I want to come back to, too.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: They like how you show up.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: They like how you share.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: They like the notes that they're reading.
- 49:19SPEAKER_01: They like what they see on the social media.
- 49:21SPEAKER_01: So you're loyal listeners and that's who you need to speak to.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: There are a lot of people who are listening to your podcast who will never buy.
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: They will never take action.
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: They just won't.
- 49:31SPEAKER_01: They'll enjoy the show and think, oh yeah, I should do that, but they won't take action.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: So I create episodes for my ideal client, the ones who buy.
- 49:39SPEAKER_01: Not for all the wannabe podcasters one day.
- 49:42SPEAKER_01: I speak to my ideal clients.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: So there are things that I talk about that newer podcasters, well, it won't.
- 49:51SPEAKER_01: It won't resonate the same way as it does for people that I've had conversations
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: with one-on-one,
- 49:55SPEAKER_01: working with them privately, which is where a lot of my content can come from.
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: As far as, okay, they're experiencing this.
- 50:01SPEAKER_01: This is going to make a great episode.
- 50:03SPEAKER_01: But as you get into it, I mean, think about it.
- 50:06SPEAKER_01: When writing a book, okay,
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: so writing a book is more than just taking your stuff and dumping it in AI, right?
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: And that's a great opportunity because you are pro-AI.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: So you can straddle that and say, okay, so listen, you're probably in one of two camps.
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: You're either all in on AI or you're absolutely against AI.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: Well, in this episode, blah, blah, blah,
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: we're going to talk about how you can leverage AI without losing yourself, right?
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: So that you really truly are the author of your book.
- 50:35SPEAKER_01: Something like that.
- 50:36SPEAKER_01: So there is so much content that you can create,
- 50:38SPEAKER_01: but it's got to be based on what your audience is telling you that they want
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: as well.
- 50:42SPEAKER_00: Hmm.
- 50:43SPEAKER_00: This is great.
- 50:45SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 50:46SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we've been talking for a while.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: I'm going to give you your time back.
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: And you do this full time?
- 50:57SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 50:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: And okay.
- 51:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:01SPEAKER_00: I think for me,
- 51:03SPEAKER_00: do you think it's a good strategy to have a mix of a solo show plus a guest show?
- 51:10SPEAKER_00: Like one episode is like me pontificating and another episode with a guest or is
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: that too distracting?
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: Not you pontificating, you showing up to serve your audience and sell your stuff.
- 51:22SPEAKER_01: You showing up to serve your audience and
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: sell your stuff.
- 51:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:27SPEAKER_01: And so I have,
- 51:29SPEAKER_01: Jodi's another private client of mine,
- 51:31SPEAKER_01: and we wrestled a bit on this,
- 51:32SPEAKER_01: and now she's flipping it completely and going three solos to one guesting.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: Three solos, one guesting.
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: Because she wants to sell her own stuff.
- 51:44SPEAKER_01: And she looked at her numbers and she said, I get more downloads on my solo episodes.
- 51:48SPEAKER_01: I said, well, there you go.
- 51:51SPEAKER_01: Do what your audience is telling you that they want.
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:54SPEAKER_00: So there's a comment from Stephen Huster.
- 51:56SPEAKER_00: Is he one of your clients?
- 51:57SPEAKER_00: He says, you might think you're doing a bad job, but you're doing it.
- 52:01SPEAKER_00: And that's a huge key to it all.
- 52:03SPEAKER_00: Figuring it out takes time.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: But when it clicks, it clicks.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Stephen.
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: I appreciate the vote of confidence.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, so we've been talking for a while and for a podcast,
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: one of the best practices is not to go long, so I'll try to be good.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: So...
- 52:26SPEAKER_00: Thank you very, very, very much.
- 52:27SPEAKER_00: It was amazing.
- 52:28SPEAKER_00: And how can people reach you, your website, your offer, all of that?
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: This is your chance to shine.
- 52:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: So listen, I'm going to go right here right now.
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: Let's see.
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: I got to click off there because we are live right now.
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: And I'm going to click on this one.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: And I'm going to drop episode number 22.
- 52:49SPEAKER_01: If you are listening to this later on and it's an audio version only,
- 52:52SPEAKER_01: go to thevirtualpodcastschool.com forward slash Substack.
- 53:08SPEAKER_01: And wherever you are in your journey,
- 53:10SPEAKER_01: if you're skeptical saying, I don't know if I really like this, Gail.
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: Totally cool.
- 53:14SPEAKER_01: Just follow along.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: You don't have to give me your email.
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: None of that.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: Just follow along.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: You can check me out.
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: And then when you see,
- 53:20SPEAKER_01: and it won't take very long, when you see, oh, this is actually the real deal.
- 53:24SPEAKER_01: I can learn how to make money podcasting without burning out.
- 53:29SPEAKER_01: Then you become a free subscriber.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: And then when you see all the really great stuff happening in the studio, you can just upgrade.
- 53:35SPEAKER_01: This is the beauty of Substack.
- 53:37SPEAKER_01: It is very much a pro entrepreneurial place.
- 53:40SPEAKER_01: So wherever you are in the journey,
- 53:42SPEAKER_01: if you are at all curious about podcast hosting or guesting,
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: And you are overwhelmed by the tech and you don't want to figure it out alone.
- 53:50SPEAKER_01: Go to the virtualpodcastschool.com forward slash Substack.
- 53:54SPEAKER_01: I'm Jen Rogers, host of the Substack Podcast Studio.
- 53:57SPEAKER_01: And I have been so stinking excited to come here and go live with you.
- 54:02SPEAKER_01: Natasha, thanks for having me.
- 54:03SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: And you have a great audio voice.
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 54:09SPEAKER_00: Were you born with it or did you develop it?
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know if ultrasounds were around when my mama was pregnant with me,
- 54:17SPEAKER_01: but I'm sure there was a microphone in utero with me.
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: I'm sure of it.
- 54:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like you're very natural.
- 54:23SPEAKER_00: And I think if people tell me you have like a radio voice,
- 54:26SPEAKER_00: that means like I don't have a TV face.
- 54:28SPEAKER_00: So I'll...
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: Whatever mandrakes you got, you got to shake them.
- 54:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 54:39SPEAKER_01: Whatever you got.
- 54:41SPEAKER_01: And, and this is, again, I,
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: I do want to compliment you for the work that you're doing here and going live
- 54:47SPEAKER_01: and taking your audience into consideration, inviting them to come along.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: It's such,
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: we're all really figuring it out as we go on Substack and everything that we do,
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: that just helps us get to the next thing.
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: And we need to put our reps in for selling.
- 55:02SPEAKER_01: So that means we have to practice.
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: And that's exactly what we do inside the studio.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: And if you want more of what you've heard today,
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: definitely go to the virtualpodcastschool.com forward slash Substack to become
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: a paid subscriber because the sprint is kicking off Monday, September 7th.
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: And you don't want to miss it.
- 55:20SPEAKER_01: Come live if you can.
- 55:22SPEAKER_01: In replays, I'm doing something new.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: I'm iterating.
- 55:24SPEAKER_01: See, I'm playing around.
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: Replays will be available only for one week after because inside the studio,
- 55:29SPEAKER_01: we're not about an old course library.
- 55:32SPEAKER_01: We're all about live action.
- 55:33SPEAKER_01: We take action.
- 55:34SPEAKER_01: So hashtag anti-lecture, come and make progress with your podcast.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: Whether you host it on Substack or not,
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: that's part of the decision that you'll probably make next week.
- 55:43SPEAKER_00: So come see.
- 55:44SPEAKER_00: I am.
- 55:46SPEAKER_00: Actually, I'm saying this live.
- 55:48SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go ahead and become a paid subscriber.
- 55:51SPEAKER_00: See, you sold me.
- 55:52SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to go ahead.
- 55:55SPEAKER_00: And if you're a podcaster, I encourage you as well to become a paid subscriber.
- 56:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, I've been following your work for a while.
- 56:02SPEAKER_00: So I'm already sold.
- 56:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:08SPEAKER_01: So let's go.
- 56:09SPEAKER_01: Natasha, thank you so much for that.
- 56:11SPEAKER_01: So listen to that.
- 56:13SPEAKER_01: That, that's what's happening.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: She hasn't commented on very many of my things.
- 56:18SPEAKER_01: She may have hearted a few things, but she's been in the background, you see?
- 56:22SPEAKER_01: And this is why you've got to show up and put your stuff out there,
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: even when it doesn't feel like anyone is watching.
- 56:30SPEAKER_01: So Natasha,
- 56:30SPEAKER_01: this is a huge win for your audience so that they can see
- 56:34SPEAKER_01: that visibility sometimes shows up as invisibility until the sale comes through.
- 56:40SPEAKER_00: I just don't have time, honestly.
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: I'm juggling one million things and three kids and animals and I play music at an orchestra.
- 56:47SPEAKER_00: I just barely have time to eat.
- 56:50SPEAKER_00: Actually, it's 1.40 and I have not had breakfast or lunch.
- 56:53SPEAKER_01: Well, you need to go eat then.
- 56:55SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for having me.
- 56:57SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying, so that's why I don't comment much.
- 57:00SPEAKER_00: I'd love to comment.
- 57:01SPEAKER_00: I just, I barely, I'm barely like making it.
- 57:05SPEAKER_00: But before I eat, I'm going to go and join your studio.
- 57:10SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to see you on Monday then.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 57:13SPEAKER_01: Hey, listen.
- 57:14SPEAKER_01: I want you to implement.
- 57:15SPEAKER_01: I'm going to drop the link in the chat to you.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: I want you to implement what we talked about today.
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: What is your
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: call to action?
- 57:23SPEAKER_00: When I record it?
- 57:25SPEAKER_00: I think the first thing I'm going to do is I'm going to record the dynamic audio.
- 57:32SPEAKER_00: And it's going to be...
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: It might be book coaching because I really enjoy that.
- 57:43SPEAKER_00: I think I will probably go for book coaching because I enjoy it
- 57:48SPEAKER_00: and I feel I really help people.
- 57:50SPEAKER_00: So I will try book coaching, but it's a big offer.
- 57:55SPEAKER_00: So but you said that don't start with the most expensive offer.
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: So it might be the first one might be my Substack newsletter.
- 58:03SPEAKER_00: I think that's the first one because it has the same name as the podcast.
- 58:07SPEAKER_01: That's beautiful.
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: That's wonderful.
- 58:10SPEAKER_00: I put that in the show notes, but nobody subscribed because nobody reads the show notes.
- 58:17SPEAKER_01: We said they might read them, but they're not clicking on them.
- 58:19SPEAKER_01: How about your audience right here?
- 58:20SPEAKER_01: What do you want them to do?
- 58:22SPEAKER_01: What's one thing that would be helpful for them to do based on our time together?
- 58:28SPEAKER_00: Well, I want them to join your studio.
- 58:31SPEAKER_00: But that's for me.
- 58:32SPEAKER_01: What about for you?
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: Thank you for that.
- 58:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:36SPEAKER_00: For me, I think if you have a book in mind and you've been struggling to finish,
- 58:42SPEAKER_00: And as someone who published three books and a video journalist for
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: 26 years.
- 59:04SPEAKER_00: I am there to help you and shepherd you through the journey.
- 59:09SPEAKER_00: Feel free to connect with me via DM,
- 59:13SPEAKER_00: Substack or my website natashatynes.com or follow me or subscribe for free

- 59:22SPEAKER_00: with natasha.substack.com and until we meet again, hope to hear from you soon.
- 59:30SPEAKER_00: Thank you again.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 59:31SPEAKER_01: If you're watching live with us here, thank you so much for being here.
- 59:35SPEAKER_01: And we do mean what we say.
- 59:36SPEAKER_01: If you have a question,
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: something that you want to work through,
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: just send us a DM and we'll give you the logical next step without being salesy.
- 59:45SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
- 59:46SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 59:47SPEAKER_00: Take care.
- 59:47SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
- 59:48SPEAKER_00: It was a blast.
- 59:49SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: Bye-bye.
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: Bye-bye.
