- 0:08Now what are you playing this song for?
- 0:10Or we got to get rid of get set of kid ready for it.
- 0:12He's going to be here in the bunch come Saturday night.
- 0:17Come on, this is a great song. Miller and Conkin, our number 2
- 0:20Iowa Sports Radio Network time to do preview the Packers and
- 0:24the Bears. Well, just to let you know,
- 0:28we're going to do our picks coming up here and the green bed
- 0:30Packers are my best bet of the weekend.
- 0:33Great. I know what I Dave Sinican joins
- 0:36his own coverage.com. Dave, I haven't picked the
- 0:38Packers all year long. I don't know if that's good or
- 0:40bad, but I'm all over him on Saturday night.
- 0:43Dave Sinican, good to talk to you.
- 0:44How are you? I'm glad to hear it, good to
- 0:47talk to you too. And if you guys need a better
- 0:49song I can send you the clip for the the song we play every Bears
- 0:53game on Packer preview called The Bears.
- 0:55Still sucked by the happy Schnapps combo.
- 0:58It's a classic, so I'll go get that in your hand.
- 1:00Yeah, that's awesome. We'll play that one.
- 1:02Good stuff. Well, look, all kidding aside,
- 1:05we've seen this game a couple of times.
- 1:06Obviously this year before I didn't see the onside kick
- 1:10coming. It's such a coin flip game.
- 1:13Jordan Love is back, obviously, which is huge.
- 1:16But I want to start with Josh Jacobs and there's no
- 1:19designation beside his name. And I I can't believe at this
- 1:22point of the year he's anywhere close to being 100%.
- 1:26But if he is, boy, that's that's certainly a positive in Green
- 1:30Bay's direction. What can you tell us about
- 1:32Jacobs? He did say this morning that
- 1:36he's as healthy as he's been in the last six weeks.
- 1:38So you're right, he's not as healthy as he was in September,
- 1:41but he's definitely feeling better than he has probably
- 1:43since Thanksgiving and that's huge.
- 1:45The Green Bay Packers offense has struggled to run the
- 1:47football this year in part because Jacobs hasn't stayed
- 1:50healthy. They had some issues up front as
- 1:52well. The bigger news is that Zach
- 1:55Tom, the right tackle, is expected back.
- 1:57He did. He did stay away today.
- 1:59They said they gave him the day off.
- 2:00He was at practice yesterday. All the metrics, blocking, pass
- 2:04blocking go up exponentially when Zach timeout is out there.
- 2:07He's the best the lineman Green Bay has.
- 2:09So having him back at even 80% will go a long way in Josh
- 2:13Jacobs production. And Jordan loves production as
- 2:16well. You speak of Jordan Love.
- 2:19It's been really, really good at times, like on the precipice of
- 2:23maybe being that elite level quarterback we kind of been
- 2:26waiting for and then as soon as it feels like we get to that
- 2:29level, we're ready to talk about it.
- 2:30What was it, the Pittsburgh game that was unbelievable?
- 2:32I think it. Was yes, yeah, that was one of
- 2:34them. Throw it off the back foot and
- 2:35just the arm talent and all the things, but it just doesn't
- 2:38happen week in and week out. Is that unfair to him, or do you
- 2:41feel like Jordan Love has reached that elite level?
- 2:45Yeah, I'm, I'm of the opinion that he has reached that elite
- 2:47level. And if you look at all the
- 2:49analytics, it bears that out. There was a stat that I saw
- 2:52yesterday, quarterbacks, EPA per play.
- 2:56He's number two behind Drake Bay and the other three guys.
- 3:00It's like, you know, Stafford and Purdy, you know, he's in
- 3:03that, that level where you remember the things that make
- 3:06you go, man, why do you throw that?
- 3:07But the body of work suggests that he is in that top lead.
- 3:12And it's something I fight up here in the Twin Cities with
- 3:14Paul Allen and, and all the Vikings fans that that just
- 3:17refuse to believe that Green Bay has a guy that could be
- 3:20considered. It's not a top five, certainly a
- 3:22top ten quarterback. But you know, facts are he's one
- 3:25and two in the postseason, got the big win in Dallas a couple
- 3:28years ago and then on the two losses has thrown a total of 5
- 3:31interceptions. So he has got to change that
- 3:33narrative in the postseason. We all know that if he turns the
- 3:36ball over on Saturday night, there's a good chance Chicago
- 3:39wins. That is how they live.
- 3:41Overall, Green Bay is one of the stingiest team and then giving
- 3:45the ball away this season, so that has not been their MO.
- 3:48We all know weather is going to play a factor, so if if he's
- 3:51sloppy with the ball on Saturday night, then yes, the Bears will
- 3:55have a really good chance. What do we make of the of the
- 3:57losing streak? I mean, I go back to the Denver
- 3:59game and the first half, I thought Green Bay was going to
- 4:01run him off the field. I really and truly did.
- 4:03And Denver found a way to win the game.
- 4:05Then they lose in overtime on sidekick to get it to overtime
- 4:09at Soldier Field before losing to Baltimore.
- 4:11And then last week, just draw a line right through.
- 4:13I mean, clean tune, please. And that that clearly meant
- 4:16nothing. But what what does that mean to
- 4:18you, Dave, that they're coming into the playoffs because you
- 4:21keep your honest as a team that's lost four straight, don't
- 4:23like the way they're going right now.
- 4:25What do you make of that? Yeah, I mean, I think they had
- 4:27one really bad game and that's the Baltimore game I can't
- 4:30really wrap my head around, but you're right.
- 4:32I mean, they had 250 yards of offense in Denver in the first
- 4:35half and you know, they lost Tom and Watson in that first half
- 4:38and the offense stalled and then Micah goes out the second-half
- 4:41and you know, the Chicago game as we know, they held the Bears
- 4:44to what, 9 points at the 2 minute warning.
- 4:47So the defense had been really solid.
- 4:49The Baltimore game, I just don't know if it was.
- 4:51We wrapped up a playoff spot on Christmas and two days later we
- 4:54just couldn't get ramped up. I make no excuses.
- 4:57It was a terrible defensive performance.
- 4:59The offense was great with Malik Willis, obviously, and if you
- 5:03throw it out so I don't, I don't look at it like a four-game
- 5:06losing streak. I look at it like a really bad
- 5:08game against the Raven, which makes you wonder about the run
- 5:11defense because obviously that's going to be Chicago's plan is to
- 5:15see if they can test that run defense.
- 5:17But no, you're right. It's unusual to go in on a
- 5:20four-game losing streak. It rarely happens.
- 5:22I think Pittsburgh last year was the first one in a long time.
- 5:26I don't look at it that way. I think the fact that Green Bay
- 5:29rested their guys and got healthy, they lost six guys to
- 5:32IR after the on the Ravens game. After that game, six guys were
- 5:35placed on IR. They have 15 guys on IR coming
- 5:38out of that game for the season. So they've had a lot of rest.
- 5:41Bears obviously played a hard game and now on a short week, 6
- 5:44days, I do think that matters this time of year.
- 5:48And Ben Johnson to be all cute. We play our guys, we play our
- 5:51starters. You know, you weren't locked
- 5:53into a 7 feet or a two seed. You, you had a chance to do
- 5:56something Philadelphia, you know, they they've made the idea
- 5:59to to rest their guys and didn't care about two or three, likely
- 6:03because they probably figured the two seed wasn't going to
- 6:04survive this weekend. That's my own opinion, but I
- 6:08think it's funny that Ben Johnson deals the need to take
- 6:10shots at at the Packers whenever he gets a chance.
- 6:13And we'll see which team comes out on tops Saturday.
- 6:16What a goal defensively and what the game plan is going to be
- 6:19here for Jeff Haffley. As we know, Caleb Williams
- 6:21outside the pocket is incredibly dangerous.
- 6:24I'm going back to that game a couple weeks ago in Week 16,
- 6:27they blitzed Caleb Williams on 40% of his drop backs.
- 6:30He went 7 to 13145 yards, 2 touchdowns, no picks though
- 6:34against the blitz. Is that going to still be the
- 6:36package knowing with how Parsons out there you need to find a
- 6:39different way obviously to generate a pass rush.
- 6:41Then when you can just let him pin his ears back, what do you
- 6:43think the game plan is going to be from halfly in that defensive
- 6:45staff? Yeah, that's a great question
- 6:48and I don't know the answer for sure.
- 6:49My hunch is that maybe they've tried to let lift a little bit
- 6:52less and see if they can get home with Lucas Van Ness, who
- 6:56was the one defensive guy who graded out really well in that
- 6:58Ravens game. Kingsley, I think bar he's been
- 7:01very good. They like what they saw from
- 7:03Baron Sorel against the Vikings last week.
- 7:05So I think maybe initially they may try to play a little more
- 7:09straight up because there are issues at cornerback.
- 7:12They lost two guys to IR week 17.
- 7:14That's why they signed Trayvon Diggs.
- 7:16He's probably going to start in this game opposite because you
- 7:19shot Nixon because they just realized carrying to Valentine
- 7:22has an aversion to tackling. You know, he's a decent cover
- 7:24guy. He's a problem.
- 7:26And against the Bears, you need your secondary to to help him
- 7:29run support. So I think Dicks is going to get
- 7:32a major shot, but they're they're hurting a cornerback.
- 7:34And so if they if they're blitzing and they're putting
- 7:37those cornerbacks on an island a little bit, I pick it gives
- 7:40Caleb a chance. But again, if it's a really
- 7:42windy night, as I've heard it might be where maybe Williams
- 7:45throwing deep isn't as effect, same thing with Love.
- 7:48Then then maybe he does revert to blitzing.
- 7:50But I think it's a really interesting thing to watch.
- 7:53My hunch is he tries to play straight up knowing that, you
- 7:56know, we got to protect the outsides and not let Caleb
- 7:59Williams attack this team with his legs because that's going to
- 8:01be a big weapon on Saturday. I'm curious to see what some of
- 8:04these younger pass rushers getting an opportunity do with
- 8:08their stance against a Bears team on Saturday.
- 8:11Is Matt Lafleur? If it doesn't go the the Packers
- 8:14way on on Saturday night, might this be the at the end of the
- 8:17Lafleur era in Green Bay? Yeah, it's a popular question.
- 8:22I'd be very, very surprised. I think the only way it is is if
- 8:26it's an absolute blowout, just a no show effort by Green Bay,
- 8:30which I do not expect. Who's out there?
- 8:34People have asked me, what about John Harbaugh?
- 8:36Is he a huge step up from Matt Lafleur, who's, you know, taking
- 8:40this offense over the years? I mean, he's been in the
- 8:42playoffs the last three seasons. Yes.
- 8:44There's a seventh seed every year you'd like to get division
- 8:47title. It's been a while, but I I'd be
- 8:50surprised if you read what that policy the new president said
- 8:53this week. It kind of, I think stamps out
- 8:56some of those rumors that get populated on the Internet.
- 8:59He sounds like a guy who's very happy with the coach and the GM
- 9:03and and the performance of this team.
- 9:05Despite the challenges of injuries and some scheduling
- 9:08things, he seems to be pretty much in line with what he's got.
- 9:13They're both due for new deals. He has said he's not going to
- 9:15want lame duck guys. So I think both guys get signed
- 9:19to new deals. The big thing for me is will
- 9:21they play pay Matt Lafleur He's he's not need, you know, at a
- 9:24level that a lot of these coaches are being paid and are
- 9:27the Packers willing to pay him in that stratosphere that that
- 9:31maybe he thinks he can get, if not in Green Bay, somewhere
- 9:34else? So it's not a zero chance, but
- 9:37I'd be really surprised if Matt Lafleur is not given a new deal
- 9:39after the season. Looks like a real possibility as
- 9:42we get closer and closer to this one and it's going to be a snow
- 9:45game. And if that is the case, well,
- 9:47just the sights of it. Feels like that's the way a
- 9:50Packers Bears playoff game absolutely should be.
- 9:53With flurries flying. Do you see an advantage one way
- 9:55or the other though? I see in the final practice
- 9:58today the Packers are going to be practicing Italy Ambo field,
- 10:00practicing outdoors for this one advantage one way or the other.
- 10:05I don't know. I don't think so.
- 10:06I guess I'm curious how Caleb handles that.
- 10:08You know, I don't know how many cold, snowy games he's played in
- 10:12his career, but I don't see that as a huge advantage one way or
- 10:16the other. I think both teams do want to
- 10:18run the football and Chicago's been really good at it.
- 10:20And that's certainly in a snowy night, you want to be able to
- 10:23run the football. And obviously turnovers, you
- 10:26know, that's what the Bears have lived off of.
- 10:28And on weird conditions, maybe you're more apt to see some
- 10:31balls slipping around. But no, I don't see that as a
- 10:34major your advantage one way or the other unless it's really
- 10:37windy. To me, the wind more than the
- 10:39snow is an issue with Caleb trying to throw the ball down
- 10:44field. I just don't know how effective
- 10:46he would be and love as well. I mean, Green Bay wants to get
- 10:47the ball down field too. I I just think there are
- 10:50opportunities for Green Bay's offense to get some explosives
- 10:54with Christian Watson now playing in the post season after
- 10:57not being able to do that last year.
- 10:59I think he'll be a problem for the bears defense.
- 11:01I I think Green Bay can score on this team and if it's really
- 11:04windy and snowy and cold, that might tamp that down a little
- 11:07bit and keep the Bears in the game.
- 11:09Yeah, I think Watson's clearly going to be a big factor.
- 11:12Last thing we'd be remiss if we didn't look to tomorrow night.
- 11:15Is your alma mater still playing?
- 11:17It's hard to believe, right? It truly is.
- 11:19I mean, here's Indiana and and here they are the undefeated
- 11:22team. They're favored in the semi
- 11:24final, that game taking place in Atlanta over Oregon.
- 11:27We saw the games during the regular season.
- 11:29So give us your thoughts, Dave, on on what it means to be a
- 11:32Hoosier and a football fan at this point and playing for an
- 11:35opportunity to play for a national championship in
- 11:40football, not in basketball, in football.
- 11:43What is, what does it mean, and how do you see the game
- 11:44tomorrow? Yeah, to think that Indiana is
- 11:48widely considered the best team left in the playoffs and the
- 11:51favorite to win the championship, It is hard to wrap
- 11:54my head around that. You know, I got two kids in
- 11:56Indiana. And I always said I hope
- 11:58basketball can resurrect itself when you're there so you can see
- 12:01what it's like to be at IU. Never in my wildest dreams that
- 12:04I think they'd be experiencing this.
- 12:06And for me as a fan to get Indiana Friday night, Green Day,
- 12:09Saturday night, it's almost too much.
- 12:11It's just almost. I can't deal with it.
- 12:14But no, I, I'm so excited for the fans for this program and to
- 12:18see what Indiana does against Oregon in a game that, you know,
- 12:21I, I think Oregon's obviously learned some things, but but
- 12:25they're not the same team. They've lost their best running
- 12:27back. They've lost a couple guys in
- 12:28their secondary. I just feel like Indiana's sort
- 12:31of a runaway train right now. I don't, I think that the Peach
- 12:34Bowl is going to be that, that stadium Atlanta, I've heard
- 12:38expected to be 75 to 80% Indiana fans.
- 12:41It's a 7 hour drive from Bloomington, obviously a much
- 12:44bigger flight from from Oregon to get down there.
- 12:47I just don't think there are any weaknesses.
- 12:49They can run the ball better than Oregon.
- 12:50They can stop the run. Their defense is better than
- 12:53Oregon. They don't have the ## talent as
- 12:56far as the evaluators go, certainly with the Oregon
- 12:58recruits. But how do you bet against what
- 13:01Indiana is doing right now? I don't like playing a team
- 13:04twice. I think that gives Oregon a bit
- 13:05of an advantage. But I just think first thing
- 13:08that he has shown that he knows how to game plan and
- 13:10coordinators know how to game plan.
- 13:12And I'll be really surprised if Indiana doesn't step up and hand
- 13:16org and by more than the 3 1/2 that they're favoured by.
- 13:19Good stuff. Dave, sinicanzonecoverage.com
- 13:22Dave, we will run you down in advance of the Seattle
- 13:24divisional game next week. I'm looking over at Condon.
- 13:27Didn't even budget, but will you go?
- 13:31Have you have you looked at plane, plane fare from Miami?
- 13:34It's from Minneapolis to Miami. If indeed Indiana does get
- 13:37there, and they're favoured to do so, we go to the national
- 13:40championship. There's a non zero chance
- 13:43there's actually some pretty cheap flights on some country to
- 13:45Miami. I have a good friend, there's a
- 13:46hurricane grad. She said that my house is your
- 13:49house. Teams are playing.
- 13:51We're going. So yeah, I think I'll, I'll put
- 13:54that as a very strong possibility.
- 13:56It's hard for me to think I can pass that up.
- 13:58Indiana, the national championship game.
- 14:00So yeah, I, I put it about 5050 at this point, but I, I'm not
- 14:04going to count my, you know, well, let's get past this game
- 14:06and then we'll really dive into. Good stuff.
- 14:08Enjoy Friday, enjoy Saturday, and we'll talk to you next next
- 14:11week. Thank you, Dave
- 14:12zenikenzonecoverage.com So Saturday morning, what are you
- 14:15going to do? Because Saturday's normally not,
- 14:17you know, focused on football. That's your Sunday show.
- 14:19But we've switched things up on cafe and this week.
- 14:22Well, Saturday In the Zone with me and Trent Tucker will be our
- 14:25usual show. We'll certainly pay attention to
- 14:27the game, but I am doing a Packer preview podcast with my
- 14:30partner, Iowa native Brent Blakemore, Des Moines guy that
- 14:34will be available on the Yep on the I Heart app.
- 14:37Tomorrow morning when it'll be live, probably around 10:00,
- 14:40we're going to do a Packer preview podcast.
- 14:41And then Sunday morning on my show, we'll be the Packer
- 14:44review, looking back at the game and looking ahead to Seattle and
- 14:47the conversation with you guys next week.
- 14:50He's a SE boat grad. His mom, Mary, worked here.
- 14:52She's a good lady. Yes, we did.
- 14:54I know her well. Yeah, she's great.
- 14:55Say hi to Brake for us, Brett rather and we will talk to you
- 14:59next week. Enjoy the games.
- 15:00Thanks pal. Yeah, you guys too.
- 15:02See ya. Yep, good to talk to you, Dave.
- 15:03Sinicanzonecoverage.com and weekends KFAN up in the Twin
- 15:08Cities. I got a theory I want to float
- 15:10by you. On this game Saturday.
- 15:12Nope. Past that news that we didn't
- 15:15get to in the first segment. Figured this would be a good
- 15:17spot to bring it up as we saw the goober on the sidelines,
- 15:21Mike McDaniel, get fired by the Dolphins.
- 15:24But I loved him and I loved Hard Knocks with him.
- 15:26And he's weird and he's different and he sure is, but he
- 15:30knows offensive football. He sure does.
- 15:33I had this floated to me last week and at the time it didn't
- 15:36look like maybe this was going to happen, but here we are.
- 15:41Matt. Maggie might be getting a job.
- 15:44Where? Somewhere.
- 15:46OK, doesn't matter where. That's not part of the theory,
- 15:49OK? He moves on.
- 15:50He's going to need an OC. Kansas City Chiefs need an
- 15:54offensive coordinator. There has been a lot of
- 15:57rumblings, a lot of Chiefs fans that want to see a shake up.
- 16:02They want to see something different.
- 16:03They want to see Andy Reid maybe get out of his comfort zone.
- 16:06I don't think it would happen, but if it did, those two
- 16:10together, 2 great offensive minds.
- 16:13What about Kingsbury's relationship with Mahomes
- 16:15though? Leave that one aside.
- 16:20I just want to do the because imagining when he got there to
- 16:23Miami, well, you saw it against your Broncos when they put 70 on
- 16:25them. I did.
- 16:28Jesus, what an awful day that was.
- 16:31I just. I think it would be incredibly
- 16:34fun. I mean, you talk about good.
- 16:36For So, will Naggy call the plays his next stop, do you
- 16:38think? Probably.
- 16:39Probably so, yeah. Yeah, I mean, that's becoming
- 16:41more and more the. Point it is.
- 16:42Yeah, fair. I would, I would love to see
- 16:46that just for the entertainment value, an old stodgy Andy Reid,
- 16:51Mike McDaniel and just two contrasting styles of the way
- 16:55they look and the way they are. And then I think what they could
- 16:58also do together with those two great offensive lines, I would
- 17:03love to see it. I think the likelihood is
- 17:04incredibly small now as a Bronco fan, you hear that.
- 17:08And I don't want that. You don't want that.
- 17:09I want him in Washington to coach Daniels.
- 17:12Get him away for a. Board out of the AFC,
- 17:15absolutely. There's some really good
- 17:17offensive minds that are, I think, I mean, who knows if
- 17:20they're going to find work, but they're going to have
- 17:22opportunities, one would assume. And if he got a young
- 17:24quarterback, no offense to defensive coaches, don't you
- 17:26want to like a McDaniel? Yes.
- 17:29Something like that right like a Kingsbury someone to tutor these
- 17:33young guys. All right, 120 more conversation
- 17:35with regarding the NFL football related because Pro Football
- 17:39focus also heavy to the college game.
- 17:41Don Wasserman joins us next Pro Football Focus, Miller and
- 17:44Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 17:56I'm Nori Condon, welcome back coming up on 1:30 on the Iowa
- 17:59Sports Radio Network. Wherever you are listening in
- 18:02the state of Iowa, we're grateful that you are anywhere
- 18:05on the iheart app, of course, Des Moines sports station, the
- 18:08flagship one O 6.3 KXNO. Well, we're about to embark on a
- 18:125 day football feast. Sadly, there won't be much
- 18:16feasting after. Don't worry about the negative,
- 18:18just. I'm going to enjoy the hell out
- 18:20of absolutely. So is Dalton Wasserman I'm
- 18:23guessing in the whole team over there. profootballfocus.com
- 18:26Dalton, good to talk to you. Trenton Cannon, Des Moines love
- 18:29to appreciate you finding time for us as you do.
- 18:32This is going to be just crazy on top of a nuts.
- 18:35The transfer portal has been. I know it's kept you busy.
- 18:37I want to go back to Monday night in the FCS championship
- 18:41game and one of the things Trent and I started our show with on
- 18:44Tuesdays, A, how great the game was, but B, were some of these
- 18:47players that we really don't watch during the season.
- 18:50Oh my God, they're really good. Where are they going to be
- 18:53playing next year? And it sounds like some of those
- 18:55guys from certainly from Illinois State and Montana
- 18:58State, both are going to have some opportunities to play in
- 19:01Power 4 conferences. Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 19:04I think, I think that's really the fun of watching a fantastic
- 19:07game like that between 2 great teams.
- 19:08And you mentioned Illinois State, I know they lost the
- 19:10game, but what a run they had through the tournament, right?
- 19:12Beaten North Dakota State and several other ranked teams along
- 19:15the way. Really one of the best
- 19:16Cinderella stories we've seen at the FCS level.
- 19:19But that's part of the fun now is you get FCS and even Group of
- 19:22Five players that make the jump to the Power 4 into these big
- 19:25time programs and then they succeed, right?
- 19:27We're seeing it even in the College Football Playoff right
- 19:29now with Trinidad Chambliss coming up from winning Division
- 19:32Two national championship last year.
- 19:34Look, these guys are real talented and for, you know, some
- 19:36of them just don't get the prime opportunities early in the
- 19:39career that they think they're going to get.
- 19:41But they go out there and earn a man and it's a lot of fun.
- 19:43I think it is a lot of fun with the portal for those guys to get
- 19:46that opportunity. Speaking of that, you know, as
- 19:48we go through and we see these portal guys, Iowa State's
- 19:51obviously rebuilding completely, their roster, Iowa's filled in a
- 19:54couple of gaps out there. Yeah, we see these guys come
- 19:56from the FCS ranks and we see those numbers from Pro Football.
- 20:00Focus a lot of times on what you guys do.
- 20:02Over there at PFF, when it comes to grading at the FCS level, is
- 20:06there anything extra that we should know Just looking at
- 20:09those raw numbers seeing all right, this is what his past
- 20:11block grade is coming from the FCS up to FBS, anything that you
- 20:15read into those numbers making the jump up?
- 20:18I think to me it's just a different level of evaluation,
- 20:21right? Because I won't tell, I won't
- 20:22sit here and tell you that I personally break down the tape
- 20:24on every single guy that goes into the portal from the SDS
- 20:27because there's quite a lot of them.
- 20:28But I think the one thing is that I, when I, when I look at a
- 20:31guy from the FCS, I want to see somebody who really dominates at
- 20:35that level, right? You talk about with our grades
- 20:37being on that zero to 100 scale. I was just talking to somebody
- 20:40else about this. When they get start getting into
- 20:42the mid upper 80s or up in the 90s and you're talking about
- 20:44dominating at that level week in and week out, then you really
- 20:47start to talk about guys who who can come up and have the
- 20:50potential to be impact players, right?
- 20:52Our highest graded pass rusher in the SBS, Lamont Lester from
- 20:55Monmouth, he just transferred to Colorado and I was watching his
- 20:58tape. I was like, you know what, he
- 21:00might be able to come up and do some things for this team,
- 21:02right? So that's just what you want to
- 21:04see at that level is just a bit of a different level of
- 21:06dominance than say, you know, a guy grading at an average level,
- 21:10guy who's an average starter at say in the Power 4 moving to
- 21:13another Power 4 school. Before we get into the to the
- 21:15NFL and what lies ahead and wild Card weekend, let's talk about
- 21:18the these two semifinals tonight, old miss and Miami and
- 21:21then the Big 10 rematch tomorrow night.
- 21:23Is there is are there one of the one of those two games move your
- 21:27needle more than the other or you can't wait for them both?
- 21:29And do you have an opinion on either one of them more so than
- 21:32the other? I think they're both outstanding
- 21:35football games. You start with tonight.
- 21:37Honestly, I think it's it's a coin flip.
- 21:38I I could not even tell you. I mean, I picked Ole Miss
- 21:41officially on our show to win the game.
- 21:43But I'll be honest with you, I have no idea who's going to win
- 21:45tonight because you have two contrasting styles, the
- 21:47physicality, the trench play of Miami and the way they've been
- 21:51getting it done with just their physical nature of style of
- 21:54play. And then you've got Ole Miss
- 21:56with the red hot quarterback, the wide open style and they're
- 21:58one of the fastest tempo teams in the country.
- 22:01I think it's something Miami hasn't seen yet this year.
- 22:03So it's a lot of fun with and then Indiana or Oregon, man,
- 22:06they're just two great football teams.
- 22:07The fact that we get maybe the 1st 2 picks in the draft
- 22:10potentially playing against each other, I do learn more towards
- 22:13Indiana. I think they're just a little
- 22:14more well-rounded. I do think they're the best team
- 22:16in the country. But you got 2 great football
- 22:18games we're going to watch over the next two nights.
- 22:20Speaking of that match up down in Atlanta, do you believe in
- 22:23the rematch theory, just getting that second shot against the
- 22:25team and how the team the lost we saw in the Little Miss
- 22:28Georgia game, maybe that will help close the gap a little bit
- 22:31for Oregon. I do think it's entirely
- 22:34possible, but at the end of the day you have to go out there and
- 22:36execute, right? And I think the bigger problem
- 22:38for me for Oregon is that was the one game this year against
- 22:41Indiana where their opponent was the more physical team.
- 22:44Oregon is also a great trench team with one of the best
- 22:47offensive and defensive lines in the country.
- 22:49But Indiana was the one team that dominated him in the
- 22:51trenches and really got consistent pressure on Dante
- 22:54Moore. If they do that again and
- 22:55Indiana's the more physically dominant team, then they'll win
- 22:58again, despite any other adjustments that Oregon could
- 23:01make. Dalton Wasserman joining us
- 23:03profootballfocus.com Dalton, I'm guessing around the around the
- 23:07water cooler at PFF or wherever you guys you're when it comes to
- 23:12the NFL, one of the takeaways is just how wide open I truly is in
- 23:17my opinion. Do you guys see it that way or
- 23:20is there one of the teams? Maybe they're maybe the one of
- 23:23the one seeds. Maybe it's not that you guys
- 23:26think, You know, if they put it all together, this team deserves
- 23:29to be the the rightful favorite to win the Super Bowl.
- 23:32Or is it truly wide open? It's as wide open a year as as I
- 23:37can remember seeing, right? And I mean, I think you're
- 23:39talking about a year where you don't have a Tom Brady who's
- 23:43always there or a Peyton Manning or a Patrick Mahomes, obviously,
- 23:46who's always who's always in that mix, right?
- 23:48It's just so wide open. I do like the LA Rams a lot, but
- 23:52they're the five seed. They might have to go out there
- 23:54and play 3 Rd. games, right? I do like the Seattle Seahawks a
- 23:57lot, you know, but we got to see if Sam Darnold can do it through
- 24:00a whole postseason run, right? And the AFC, I'll tell you right
- 24:03now, the AFC side, I have no idea.
- 24:05I really, I really at this point, I think you've got 7
- 24:08evenly matched teams and any one of them could beat any of the
- 24:11others on any given day. That includes even the three
- 24:13games this weekend. I think the AFC especially is as
- 24:16wide open as we've ever seen it. Absolutely wild individual
- 24:20games. We're going to open up with
- 24:21Carolina as we'll get one of the South teams.
- 24:23Of course, in that opening window on Saturday, they beat
- 24:26the Rams, their double digit underdog against the Rams.
- 24:29Was it that fluky? Or does Carolina maybe not even
- 24:32to win the game? Do you believe they can hang
- 24:34around at minimum? They can hang around if they can
- 24:37control the pace and run the football better than they had
- 24:40the last couple weeks. But I do think the Rams are
- 24:42going to take care of business. I get why they're a heavy
- 24:45favorite here and their offense, outside of the three turnovers
- 24:48they had in the first game, their offense played an
- 24:49excellent game and the Panthers, especially on the ground, didn't
- 24:52have a whole lot of resistance, right.
- 24:53So the for the Panthers, it's going to be the same formula.
- 24:56Try to control the pace. You have to force a couple of
- 24:58turnovers. They will not win this game
- 25:00without forcing at least 2 turnovers.
- 25:02And then Bryce Young's got to make some special throws like he
- 25:04did the first time around. If they're going to hang around
- 25:06of. Course, here in the state of
- 25:07Iowa, the one that moves the needle most will be Packers and
- 25:10Bears on Saturday night. It truly to me is a coin flip
- 25:13game. Did you find an edge in this
- 25:15game, Dalton? No, I think it's extremely even.
- 25:18I think you're going to get another game down to the wire,
- 25:20maybe a last second field goal, something like that.
- 25:22I think it's maybe the most unpredictable game of the
- 25:25weekend because of the nature of these two teams, how much even
- 25:28how evenly matched the first two games were.
- 25:29The one thing I'm looking for from the Bears, and I know
- 25:32they've been known this year for all their fourth quarter
- 25:34comebacks and late wins and dramatic fashion and all of
- 25:37that, but they need to get off to a better start.
- 25:39I believe the first half of the two games combined these two
- 25:42have played, the Bears have been outscored 20 to 3.
- 25:44It is hard over and over to come back against good football
- 25:47teams, right? So you don't want to fall
- 25:49behind. You're in your home stadium,
- 25:50establish the run game. That's what I'm looking for.
- 25:52Can the Bears get off to a better start to maybe avoid some
- 25:55of those late game dramatics? Let's go to Sunday.
- 25:59Bills, Jags, it's Josh Allen. I fell into this trap last year
- 26:03in the Super Bowl. Just Patrick Gohomes.
- 26:05I don't care about the rest of it.
- 26:06I don't care about the Eagles, just Patrick Gohomes.
- 26:08Patrick Gohomes are people fall into the same trap here, Josh
- 26:11Allen, Josh Allen, Josh Allen. And not looking at the totality
- 26:14of how good this Jacksonville team has been the last two
- 26:16months. I think it's possible and that's
- 26:19why this is my favorite game of the week.
- 26:21Josh Allen. Josh Allen is the supernova and
- 26:24he can overcome anything and maybe he will do it.
- 26:26But that Jacksonville team is really good.
- 26:28And I'll tell you right now, Trevor Lawrence, over the last
- 26:30five or six weeks, he is the hottest quarterback in football.
- 26:33He's figured it out with Parker Washington and that receiving
- 26:36core. The run game has been a bit
- 26:38inconsistent, but we know the Bills run defense is kind of
- 26:41weak as well. And I'll tell you what,
- 26:42Jacksonville's defense does not get enough credit for how good
- 26:45it is. It is built a lot like Seattle
- 26:47and they just haven't gotten the national attention.
- 26:49That is a well-rounded football team that absolutely can beat
- 26:53Buffalo, and I actually picked them to do it.
- 26:55Yeah, I'm with you. Let's go to the nightcap because
- 26:57this Chargers team, they have so much going for them, but their
- 27:00offensive line is not one of those things.
- 27:03Obviously they Justin Herbert, I think he's elite quarterback.
- 27:07The playoff record not notwithstanding, do you give the
- 27:10Chargers a chance to go across the country and beat the
- 27:12Patriots knowing the fact that the Chargers have a huge
- 27:16handicap with that that offensive line?
- 27:20I think they absolutely have a chance.
- 27:21I think actually this is one of the better matchups that the
- 27:24Chargers could have gotten. I know it's on the road.
- 27:25I know it's against an MVP candidate in Drake May, but I
- 27:28think there's two reasons they can hang in this game.
- 27:30One, their defense. The Chargers defense does so
- 27:34well to prevent deep balls in big home run shots.
- 27:37You know, outside of the first quarter of that Houston game a
- 27:39few weeks ago, they do such a great job with Derwin James and
- 27:42that secondary that I think they're really going to make
- 27:44Drake may work to score points. And then on the other side, the
- 27:47Patriots pass rush is not that great and the front sevens a
- 27:50little bit banged up. And I think if the Chargers can
- 27:52find any sort of run game on the outside, I think of Marion
- 27:55Hampton plays a big factor in the rookie running back for the
- 27:58Chargers. If he can make a few, if he can
- 28:00pop off a few big runs on the outside, I think the Chargers
- 28:03really do have a shot to win this game because Hubbard, yes,
- 28:05he's been under pressure all year, but he's been dealing with
- 28:07it well. And this New England defense
- 28:09Willow worry about some of the injuries they have.
- 28:11We look at the match up on Monday night.
- 28:14You have the Steelers obviously that have this ridiculous Monday
- 28:18night streak that dates back to 1992.
- 28:21That doesn't matter for this game yet.
- 28:24They're just something odd about this team.
- 28:26They'll get DK Metcalf back. They'll have an opportunity,
- 28:29Aaron Rodgers in the playoffs trying to get his 12th career
- 28:32playoff victory, but against this Texans defense.
- 28:35I mentioned the numbers and I saw this from DVOA.
- 28:37Are your numbers on the Texans at Pro Football Focus?
- 28:40Have they taken a step back here recently?
- 28:44Defensively, not much really. I know they played kind of a
- 28:47lackluster by their standards game, you know, against the
- 28:50Colts, but I also think they were, I think they were playing
- 28:52at about 80%, you know, effort level in that game, knowing that
- 28:55Jacksonville and what they were doing to Tennessee and knowing
- 28:58the division title wasn't on the line.
- 29:00No, their defense is outstanding and offensively it is a bit up
- 29:03and down because their offensive line is still below average or a
- 29:06little better than we expected them to be, but still not a
- 29:09great unit. That's going to be the big key,
- 29:11and I think that's a big key for both teams in this game, is
- 29:13which offensive line can hold up enough against two of the elite
- 29:17pass rushes in the league, right?
- 29:18And which quarterback can handle that pressure better?
- 29:20Whether it's Aaron Rodgers or CJ Stroud, I think that really
- 29:23decides this game. And finally, Brock Purdy in the
- 29:26San Francisco 49ers, a rematch of what the NFC title gave two
- 29:29years ago or three, whatever it was pretty got hurt in that
- 29:32game. Obviously the Eagles offense is
- 29:34a huge question mark. Defence looks elite, might be
- 29:37better than last year. Your thoughts on the final game?
- 29:39Well, it's actually middle of the afternoon Sunday, but the
- 29:42final game we'll get to. To me, this game's all about
- 29:46Philly. The spotlight is on their
- 29:47offense. It's on Nick Siriani, it's on
- 29:49Kevin Pitullo, their offensive coordinator line up, run the
- 29:52football. Saquon Barkley should get 30
- 29:54plus carries in this game. The 49ers defensive line is the
- 29:57weakest part of their team. And we know this Eagles team,
- 30:00Howie Roseman built it through the trenches.
- 30:02They built it through the run game and then they asked Jalen
- 30:04Hurts to be the complimentary piece.
- 30:05That's how they win this football game.
- 30:07If they asked Jalen Hurts to just drop back and, you know,
- 30:10just carry the game for whatever reason and, you know, just
- 30:13trying to playing the ball all over the place, I don't think,
- 30:16I'm not saying it couldn't work, but I don't think that's the
- 30:18optimal way for them to do it. If it's me, I'm riding Saquon
- 30:21Barkley to a victory over this 49ers run defense.
- 30:24I think this game is all about Philly.
- 30:26And if they let the 49ers hang around in this game, then I
- 30:29really believe that that'll be their own fault.
- 30:31Dalton, thanks for doing this man.
- 30:32You've been very generous with your time.
- 30:34We will try and run you down perhaps for championship
- 30:36weekend. Dale, Thank you, Dalton,
- 30:38appreciate it. Of course, your draft stuff will
- 30:40be coming up and you guys will have a big focus on the NFL
- 30:43draft. Daltonwassermanprofootballfocus.com
- 30:45Dalton, thank you. Absolutely appreciate you guys
- 30:48as always. Yeah, good to talk to you,
- 30:49Dalton Wasserman, as we check in on the NFL and college football.
- 30:53All right, it's a busy Sunday. Got NFL going crazy, but if you
- 30:59don't have plans and you like some plans, and if you're a
- 31:01basketball fan, you want to go see the Hawks in Illinois,
- 31:05Caller number one right now. Doctor Stephen Fuller
- 31:07fullerdental.net yes, they've got two locations and he's got 2
- 31:11tickets to give away to caller number one.
- 31:14Caller #1 We'll put you at Carver Hawkeye Arena for the
- 31:19game against Illinois. You have to pick up the tickets
- 31:23at the Carver box office. Please don't call if you can't
- 31:26go because I don't want them sitting there when somebody
- 31:28could have used these tickets. Caller number 1-515-284-5966.
- 31:34You will get yourself a pair of tickets to see Illinois and Iowa
- 31:39back with our picks next Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports
- 31:42Radio Network. Off the bench, who knows
- 31:45football better? The war wages on.
- 31:49It's time for the afternoon pickup sponsored by Circa Sports
- 31:53on One O 6.3, KXNO and the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 31:59All right, here we go. It is time for our picks.
- 32:02Not a football Friday. It's a football Thursday.
- 32:06Well, Friday and Saturday and Sunday and Monday.
- 32:09As good of a slate as we have had.
- 32:12Perfect. Absolutely beautiful The way the
- 32:14calendar fell this year, we'll get into it. 5 picks this week.
- 32:17A little bit different as we only got 2 college games left so
- 32:20you don't have to pick both but I'm going to and the team box is
- 32:23mine. You were five and O last week.
- 32:25I had two, five and O's I believe this year.
- 32:27And two O and fives. Probably no.
- 32:30A lot of 1 of fours. It's been terrible.
- 32:31Barely over 540, seven, 46 and 2.
- 32:35You hold a two game lead over me in our individual contest
- 32:39against the boys. Our lead has ballooned up now to
- 32:43six, a six game lead as we come down the closing stretch here
- 32:48with the NFL playoffs upon us. Here we go in college football.
- 32:51Let's start tonight. If you've been listening to the
- 32:53show, you know where I think both of us are heading.
- 32:56I'm going to grab the Hurricanes, lay the field goal
- 32:58in this one. In fact, this is going to be my
- 33:00only favorite of the week, Miami.
- 33:03The cracking perhaps of old miss I think is going to be a factor
- 33:06here. Carson Beck, how about this?
- 33:08Over his last half dozen games, 13 touchdowns, 1 interception.
- 33:12Good. Averaging 227 yards through the
- 33:15air per game. I will take the Hurricanes with
- 33:17pick number one. Pick #2 Let's go to tomorrow
- 33:19night and I'm taking the Ducks. 3 1/2 is the number against
- 33:23Indiana. I think the rematch angle is
- 33:25definitely going to help them. Oregon good enough to hang
- 33:28around and with the shot in the end, I'll grab Oregon plus the 3
- 33:311/2. To the NFL we go.
- 33:33Let's go to the early game, first game.
- 33:35We'll get to the NFL playoffs. The NFC South is involved.
- 33:39I got to grab the Panthers too much value.
- 33:42Looking at the betting splits that are out there.
- 33:43What is it? Oh, it is 7080% bets money all
- 33:48over the team. Making the long road trip from
- 33:51LA against the team they already lost to, giving Carolina.
- 33:55Bryce has to have a good game for this to come in.
- 33:57I think he's got a chance to do that.
- 33:58Carolina plus 10 1/2. I'm grabbing the 49ers in the
- 34:01points. I know there's a lot of injury
- 34:03concerns with them scoring and and the defense has been
- 34:06terrible. Here's the good thing.
- 34:07Philly's offense isn't very good.
- 34:09That offensive line has not been playing very well.
- 34:12I like the 49ers in this spot. I'll grab the five with that
- 34:15one. My best bet of the week comes on
- 34:18Saturday night. It's the Bears.
- 34:20Mine too. And the Packers?
- 34:23I'm grabbing the. Packers Now is that just a
- 34:26hedge? No, it's not a hedge.
- 34:29It's what I We've seen this game twice.
- 34:31Green Bay has, on the 120 minutes played, been the better
- 34:34team for what, 115 of them? Fair.
- 34:37Packers are better. I'm with you Trent, I'm with
- 34:40you. Let's start.
- 34:41And you're right, we're on the same side in this game tonight.
- 34:44I'm with you on Miami. I'm going to lay the field goal
- 34:47over Ole Miss. I love Ole Misses story.
- 34:49I will not be sad one bit if Ole Miss wins this football game.
- 34:53I like the champ, the story, obviously the Lane Kiffin angle
- 34:56to things, but I will take that as my only college pick this
- 35:00week. Then we get to the NFL and I'm
- 35:02going to take the Rams. There's just too many people
- 35:05that are grabbing the points in this game.
- 35:06Although what you just told me kind of kind of goes against
- 35:09what I was thinking. But I'm going to lay the 10
- 35:12points because I don't think Carolina's very good and I don't
- 35:13think Bryce Young is worth a damn.
- 35:15I will take Carolina and Matthew Stafford, the real Most Valuable
- 35:20Player of the NFL. Is he going to win it?
- 35:22No, I don't think he's either. Well, yeah, he will.
- 35:24You think he will? I think the schedule thing I.
- 35:26It's it's real, isn't it? And I think voters will take
- 35:28that into consideration. I'll take the Rams and lay the
- 35:3110. You and I are on the opposite
- 35:34side of this Eagles game. I will take Philadelphia over
- 35:38the Niners. I'd love to see Purdy get take a
- 35:42next step, but I just don't think that that defense is good
- 35:45enough. As bad as the Philadelphia
- 35:46offense is, the is the Eagles defense is absolutely elite.
- 35:51I'll lay the 3 1/2 in that game, then I'll take Jacksonville and
- 35:56at Hard Rock it was a you were actually getting a point and 1/2
- 36:00in Hard Rock. Everybody else was Green Bay.
- 36:02Our beg your pardon? Everybody else had had it the
- 36:06other way with Buffalo being favored and they're still
- 36:08favored everywhere but the hard rocks.
- 36:11What am I looking at that now? No, it's a pick em there.
- 36:16Anyways. It was a point and a half.
- 36:17I'll take the point and 1/2 in Jacksonville.
- 36:19My best bet of the week is green.
- 36:20Bay who? Who?
- 36:21Who are you taking there? Sorry.
- 36:22I'm taking Jacksonville plus a point and a half.
- 36:24Gotcha. Eagles -3 1/2 Rams -10 and Green
- 36:29Bay gets a point and I'll take it.
- 36:30I think it's me there's. A point and a half out there in
- 36:32the market. I'll take the point and a half.
- 36:33Yes, give me that. Yes, I'm looking at it right
- 36:36now. Is it DraftKings?
- 36:38No, it's not. It was a FanDuel when I looked.
- 36:40This is 10 minutes ago. Boy, this they're flipping.
- 36:42Back and forth. Oh absolutely.
- 36:44It's absolutely wild. Yeah, hard rocks got them
- 36:46favored by 1. I got this question from
- 36:48somebody and a perfect example. 49ers, I got them +5.
- 36:54You have them -3 1/2. The way we play is the way that
- 36:57our friends at circus sports tell us to play, and that is get
- 37:01the best number. This is something for everybody.
- 37:05And when a sports book is telling you this, and guess
- 37:07what? The big boys won't tell you
- 37:08this. You need to have multiple outs
- 37:12because if this thing ends for, you're a winner.
- 37:15I'm a winner. You can't always get the best of
- 37:17the number. I get that and.
- 37:19MGM is 5 right now and and Hard Rock is 3 and a.
- 37:21Half and one thing in the gambling space that drives me
- 37:23crazy is it feels like all these pros, all these guys that think
- 37:26they're pros, they always get closing line value, every single
- 37:30one of them, every single time. How do they always get the best
- 37:33of the number? They don't, no.
- 37:35Well, they actually put in their wagers.
- 37:37They don't. But it's funny how that happens
- 37:40with some of the people that are out there That's Oh yeah, I did
- 37:43have that and that half point actually mattered in that one.
- 37:46We do this Fridays normally and we take a look.
- 37:49We go to Wager Talk and you anybody can go.
- 37:51There like 7 or 8 books I just clicked off of.
- 37:54It it's the main ones, DraftKings, FanDuel circa the
- 37:58Super Book, Caesar's Bet, MGM, South Point who not available
- 38:01here. Sadly, though, our buddy Chris
- 38:03Andrews tried to get into the state.
- 38:04Hard Rock, ESPN, bet Fanatics all up there and you can look
- 38:08right there and it's a great tool for you if you do have
- 38:10multiple outs, instead of having to go through and open up this
- 38:13app and then open up this app and open up this one, just see
- 38:15what it is currently. Yeah, great tool.
- 38:17Wagertalk.com is where you can find.
- 38:19DraftKings, FanDuel Circus, Super Book, Caesars Bet, MGM,
- 38:22South Point, Hard Rock, ESPN Bet.
- 38:24They're all up there. Just click on live odds and
- 38:28that's where they will appear. All right, good stuff.
- 38:31Enjoy the game tonight. Do you have a basketball lean
- 38:34anywhere? Did you look at basketball
- 38:35tonight at all? I haven't.
- 38:37I will. I have some time this afternoon,
- 38:39I believe right before I have to pick up the kids that'll have a
- 38:41little time in the pickup line and that's what I'll be doing.
- 38:43My handicapping for college basketball covered about 3:45.
- 38:46That's what I'll be getting into that.
- 38:48But no, I didn't have time to do that today.
- 38:49Had a couple of meetings, so didn't get to the college
- 38:52basketball handicapping, but after last night, one and three,
- 38:55one and four, one and four. Yeah, I had five picks, 1 and 4.
- 38:58Drake was the only one. Well, I had Bradley that got
- 39:01home, but that was an ugly one. We were better early in the
- 39:04week. We'll try to turn it around
- 39:05though, and we'll be back to recap a game from Arizona Wild.
- 39:12Why is this game there? I don't know, but that's where.
- 39:14It is. Get rid of the polls.
- 39:15I'm with you. I'm with you.
- 39:17Enough. Let's make one more change.
- 39:19Certainly the sport. We got a lot more changes in
- 39:21the. Right, but this one would be on
- 39:22the top, toward the top of the list.
- 39:24All right, that's going to do it for us.
- 39:26Coming up next off the bench here comes Sean Robertson and
- 39:28Lucas strain. They will take you until 5 O
- 39:31clock. We're Miller and Condon.
- 39:32We're with you every Monday through Friday, noon to two to
- 39:35talk sports with you, The Moines Sports Station, One O 6.3, KXNO
- 39:39and the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
