- 2:19SPEAKER_07: Very good.
- 2:20SPEAKER_07: Yeah, just and I think AJ's.
- 2:25SPEAKER_16: I'm sorry people can't see it.
- 2:27SPEAKER_08: I'm sorry people can't see it.
- 2:28SPEAKER_16: I'm embarrassed to say.
- 2:29SPEAKER_16: I did too.
- 2:30SPEAKER_16: I got a rat tail too.
- 2:32SPEAKER_08: Why doesn't that surprise me at all?
- 2:34SPEAKER_16: Uh yeah, with me?
- 2:36SPEAKER_16: Oh, you'd be like, Wow.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: A beard rat tail.
- 2:43SPEAKER_16: Oh, now that I have it.
- 2:45SPEAKER_16: Oh yeah, I have it when I rode my motorcycle because I was my goatee was so long, it would if I didn't have it tied down, it would flip up and hit me in the back.
- 2:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah, you don't want that.
- 2:55SPEAKER_16: Do you ride motorcycles at all?
- 2:58SPEAKER_08: I I do not.
- 2:59SPEAKER_08: No.
- 2:59SPEAKER_08: But you can't.
- 3:00SPEAKER_08: I like to be surrounded by a lot of metal when I'm traveling.
- 3:04SPEAKER_08: So I got you.
- 3:05SPEAKER_08: You know, no offense to the motorcycle riders, but yeah, well, you've got a very nice vehicle too.
- 3:10SPEAKER_16: I love your linkage.
- 3:11SPEAKER_07: Thank you very much.
- 3:12SPEAKER_07: So do I.
- 3:12SPEAKER_07: It spoils me.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I seats.
- 3:16SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 3:17SPEAKER_07: Nice.
- 3:18SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 3:19SPEAKER_16: All right, well, listen, let's we want to talk about what's coming up in 22.
- 3:22SPEAKER_16: I know that I kind of put you on the spot with that, but I I'm excited to be a part of KSJE, so I want to get out the word about what uh what are the plans in the uh down the road and talk a little bit about the programming that you have at KSJE.
- 3:36SPEAKER_16: Sure.
- 3:37SPEAKER_16: I think that's the most the most important thing I want to get out.
- 3:40SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 3:41SPEAKER_08: Well, the keyword is local.
- 3:42SPEAKER_16: That's absolutely correct.
- 3:44SPEAKER_08: You know, um we we love local programming, we love local information, local community events, um, you know, all those things we think are really important.
- 3:53SPEAKER_08: And so, you know, we'd like to have more local programming.
- 3:57SPEAKER_08: You know, KSJE's been on the air for now 32 years in 2022, 1990.
- 4:04SPEAKER_16: Have you been there that entire time?
- 4:06SPEAKER_08: No.
- 4:06SPEAKER_16: I was gonna say, I didn't think so that because that you were the television in the first time.
- 4:09SPEAKER_08: That's right.
- 4:10SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I've been here for about as long.
- 4:12SPEAKER_08: I've been targeted for about that that many years.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: I feel like I read that it says like 1988.
- 4:19SPEAKER_08: I think the they started planning for the station in 88.
- 4:21SPEAKER_08: We actually signed on the air in 1990.
- 4:24SPEAKER_08: But but yes, the planning started earlier than than that, for sure.
- 4:27SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 4:28SPEAKER_16: So, yeah.
- 4:29SPEAKER_16: Well, the programming that's on there, it's it's I am very blessed to be a part of it.
- 4:34SPEAKER_16: It's a it's a eclectic.
- 4:36SPEAKER_16: Is that a good word to use for that?
- 4:38SPEAKER_07: I think so.
- 4:38SPEAKER_07: It's everywhere.
- 4:39SPEAKER_07: I mean, anything listening to a lot of people.
- 4:42SPEAKER_16: Yeah, a little bit.
- 4:43SPEAKER_08: I mean, in a positive way.
- 4:45SPEAKER_08: Right, right.
- 4:46SPEAKER_08: But mostly, you know, during the week, it's mostly classical and jazz.
- 4:49SPEAKER_08: Maybe folks are familiar with that.
- 4:51SPEAKER_08: Um, I have a show on the mornings at 8 o'clock, which is local community interviews and and things that we've we've done that I brought to the station.
- 4:58SPEAKER_08: Um, but it's you know, it was started by you know Dr.
- 5:02SPEAKER_08: Henderson, the president of San Juan College, as a gift to the community as a classical station, and then they added jazz, and then on the weekends we've kind of gone a little bit all over the place, which is why Wake Up Call is such a great fit on Sunday mornings.
- 5:16unknown: Yeah.
- 5:16SPEAKER_16: I've been called worse all over the place.
- 5:20SPEAKER_16: I've been called worse.
- 5:21SPEAKER_16: Musically speaking.
- 5:22SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 5:23SPEAKER_16: Yes.
- 5:23SPEAKER_16: Right.
- 5:24SPEAKER_16: Well, let's talk a little bit about where you came from from before that.
- 5:28SPEAKER_16: Wh where were you born originally?
- 5:30SPEAKER_08: I was born in uh upstate New York, um, outside of Rochester.
- 5:34SPEAKER_16: I remember because we had a conversation about uh my daughter-in-law, I think, on the last uh podcast that you were on.
- 5:40SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 5:41SPEAKER_16: But uh do the how many of the radio listeners know that you were from Rochester, New York?
- 5:46SPEAKER_08: I'm not sure if many do, although I do tend to root for the Buffalo Bills when they have a good season, so there may be a little bit of that disclosure that people say.
- 5:54SPEAKER_08: Because I went to school and I went to college in Buffalo.
- 5:57SPEAKER_08: Spent some years there.
- 5:58SPEAKER_08: And then, you know, I ended up here because we don't have as much snow as they have in Rochester or Buffalo, and I'm perfectly fine with that.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: I kind of miss the snow.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: I was I saw I do.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: I miss um, you know, I lived up in in West Point for a little bit and then I moved to Newburgh and uh so I miss like the the New York fall.
- 6:18SPEAKER_16: That's some heavy snow though.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: And the snow, I miss the snow a little a little bit.
- 6:22SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: Just a little bit.
- 6:24SPEAKER_08: But see, you can just drive up north a little bit and see plenty, and that's what I do if I really miss it.
- 6:29SPEAKER_08: Uh yeah.
- 6:30SPEAKER_16: I I can remember going to a restaurant.
- 6:32SPEAKER_16: I uh the uh national's for roller speed skating was held in Buffalo, New York, okay?
- 6:40SPEAKER_16: And I had a team of about four or five that I took up there, and I can remember going into a restaurant.
- 6:46SPEAKER_16: This is before the snow had fallen, but we go into this little cafe, and there's this hallway uh a long hallway before you get into the restaurant, and I'm walking in, you know, and me being the kind of person I am, I'm like, man, why don't they extend it, make put seats or you know, they could do so much with and no, because of the snowfall, they had to have a place for everybody to get out of the snow and shake the snow off.
- 7:10SPEAKER_16: Is that right?
- 7:11SPEAKER_16: Yeah, right.
- 7:12SPEAKER_07: And let it all melt off their boots or whatever.
- 7:18SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 7:18SPEAKER_16: Well, it wasn't quite that long, but it was it was pretty long.
- 7:22SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that that sounds about right.
- 7:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and that's probably about four months out of the year.
- 7:26unknown: Oh man.
- 7:28SPEAKER_16: So what how did you get to Farmington?
- 7:30SPEAKER_16: I mean, how did you end up in Farmington?
- 7:31SPEAKER_16: I know you you were you were on uh was it K O K O B F K O B F which stood for Farmington, and this was K-O B R, which was Roswell, right?
- 7:40SPEAKER_08: But K-O-B was Albuquerque, and we were a satellite station of KOB, so we aired most of their programs, but they hired me, and that's how I got to Farmington, is they brought me out to be their news director.
- 7:52SPEAKER_08: They wanted to expand their local news offerings, and so that's what brought me here in 1989.
- 7:59SPEAKER_08: And we did that, and we did local news.
- 8:02SPEAKER_08: We were when I got here, we were doing more local news on KOB F during the People's Court than we were doing at 6 or 10 PM.
- 8:10SPEAKER_16: No kidding.
- 8:11SPEAKER_08: We had a longer time segment.
- 8:13SPEAKER_08: And I said, that doesn't make any sense, you guys.
- 8:15SPEAKER_08: We need to put local news where people are looking for news at 6 and 10.
- 8:19SPEAKER_08: And so, you know, we we figured that out and changed it around.
- 8:23SPEAKER_08: Changed it around a little bit, added sports, JP Murietta.
- 8:26SPEAKER_08: People remember JP, right?
- 8:28SPEAKER_08: Um he was our first sports anchor.
- 8:30SPEAKER_08: He was hired as a news reporter and then stuck with us because we wanted to launch sports and we were able to, you know, and this was all you know negotiating, taking more time from the big station, and they they weren't always happy with me for wanting to do that.
- 8:43SPEAKER_08: But the salespeople were happy because they could sell it, and you know how that works.
- 8:47SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 8:48SPEAKER_08: And so uh, you know, I think we uh we earned our keep for a while.
- 8:52SPEAKER_16: Yeah, more than enough.
- 8:53SPEAKER_16: Well, how did you end up in the college?
- 8:55SPEAKER_08: Well, uh, like I said, we earned our keep for a while, but then after a while, there was a there was a des decision to to change and um and go in a different direction.
- 9:05SPEAKER_08: And I remember a meeting with the station manager and the general manager from Albuquerque, and I was not part of that uh future plan.
- 9:14SPEAKER_08: And it just so happened there was a job available at the at the college.
- 9:18SPEAKER_08: Then the the application date closed that that next day, and I was able to apply and be considered for that position that I have now.
- 9:27SPEAKER_16: So they didn't put a no complete clause when they uh terminated you at all.
- 9:33SPEAKER_08: Um, you know, they had forgotten or had promised that I was gonna get a new contract, but never put forward a new contract, and I was promised since from December to February that one was coming and one never came, and so apparently there was no nothing to enforce.
- 9:50SPEAKER_16: Nothing to worry about as far as the no-compete.
- 9:52SPEAKER_16: Right.
- 9:52SPEAKER_16: Because I've worked at radio stations when I've left, and no, you're not.
- 9:56SPEAKER_16: I can't talk for Can't have your voice anywhere.
- 9:59SPEAKER_16: I actually if you moved my I think it was five hundred miles, you can go five hundred miles away.
- 10:05SPEAKER_08: We had those, I mean, and like we had contracts with with KOB and they had non-computes in there, but um you were fortunate.
- 10:12SPEAKER_08: I was, and I think I probably could have negotiated that out because of the situation, you know.
- 10:17SPEAKER_08: That was it was pretty abrupt, and there weren't a lot of other television jobs in the area or broadcasting jobs, and so it didn't work out, and I'm I'm grateful for that.
- 10:36SPEAKER_13: Can everybody hear us?
- 10:37SPEAKER_13: I hear also because we have a lot to talk about.

- 11:35SPEAKER_16: No, me neither.
- 11:35SPEAKER_16: That's true.
- 11:36SPEAKER_08: But thank you.
- 11:37SPEAKER_08: Well, I've been around for a long time, and it's a great community, and I'm happy that I was able to stay.
- 11:42SPEAKER_08: Um there were certainly some conversations about the what-ifs, and um anyway, but it worked out.
- 11:48SPEAKER_08: And I was, you know, I was part of the college um since 1990.
- 11:52SPEAKER_08: I had actually taught at the college.
- 11:54SPEAKER_08: Well, I worked at the TV station, and so I had some connections to the college, and so when I did you start as general manager for them or did you work into that?
- 12:03SPEAKER_08: I was hired as general manager of KSJE.
- 12:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah, correct.
- 12:07SPEAKER_08: And um, but I would you know I've been teaching up there for 31 years as an adjunct teacher, teaching mass media and public speaking, so it worked out.
- 12:16SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it really did.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: I I need to take another public speaking class.
- 12:20SPEAKER_08: Do you?
- 12:20SPEAKER_16: Well, come on, we'll sign you up.
- 12:22SPEAKER_16: Let's do it.
- 12:22SPEAKER_16: I just I know a guy.
- 12:26SPEAKER_09: We'll be back after a quick break.
- 12:28SPEAKER_16: From Traeger's Bar.
- 12:30SPEAKER_16: It's uh Scott and Ruth.
- 12:32SPEAKER_15: We we we built all this together, and it was such a rewarding time.
- 12:36SPEAKER_15: It's been a lot of blood, sweat, and tears put into this.
- 12:39SPEAKER_10: Something where you it makes you feel like you're you're getting an experience that you wouldn't normally get.
- 12:43SPEAKER_10: We're really happy to be a part of this community.
- 12:46SPEAKER_15: We just have some uh really, really uh well thought out food.
- 12:50SPEAKER_15: Uh uh our wings are smoked.
- 12:52SPEAKER_15: We smoke our own pork for our sliders.
- 12:54SPEAKER_10: We try to really use as much as we can every kind of local business to interact with and help us as well as we can help them.
- 13:03SPEAKER_15: I am all about just the passion of creating something, whether it's a good drink, whether it's an amazing dish, whatever it is.
- 13:11SPEAKER_15: But uh yeah, like I just truly feel like Farmington is a special place.
- 13:16SPEAKER_15: We have several amazing cocktails here.
- 13:19SPEAKER_16: For more information about Trigger's Bar and the Doghouse, visit triggersbar.com.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: Give me his number.
- 13:34SPEAKER_16: Okay, there we go.
- 13:35SPEAKER_16: After the show, I'll make sure.
- 13:38SPEAKER_16: All right, we're gonna play some 80s music for uh for Scott.
- 13:41SPEAKER_16: I I have some uh Huey Lewis uh in the news that uh needs to play.
- 13:47SPEAKER_16: Little Hip to be square, huh?
- 13:51SPEAKER_07: Right?
- 13:52SPEAKER_07: Oh, I can find bananas.

- 22:47SPEAKER_03: A word of the week.
- 22:49SPEAKER_03: Something like this.
- 22:51SPEAKER_16: Well, today I'm going to use Windows only because it frustrates me very much.
- 22:56SPEAKER_16: Windows, usually that's something that you look out of, right?
- 22:58SPEAKER_16: They're in your house.
- 22:59SPEAKER_16: No.
- 22:59SPEAKER_16: Windows.
- 23:00SPEAKER_16: Windows will install needless data throughout your entire system.
- 23:11SPEAKER_03: See?
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: I told you.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: Use that word in a sentence this week.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: I dare ya.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: This has been David Neves.
- 23:19SPEAKER_16: Well, I honestly I don't think I'll have Microsoft as a sponsor anymore.
- 23:23SPEAKER_16: I'm not sure.
- 23:24SPEAKER_16: They're out.
- 23:24SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 23:25SPEAKER_16: Sorry.
- 23:27SPEAKER_16: They're done.
- 23:28SPEAKER_16: We're talking with Scott Miklin and we kind of got we kind of touched bass and we're playing 80s music today because that's Scott's favorite uh era.
- 23:36SPEAKER_16: One of them.
- 23:37SPEAKER_16: One of them.
- 23:37SPEAKER_16: Well, yeah.
- 23:38SPEAKER_16: An era, sure.
- 23:39SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 23:39SPEAKER_16: You know.
- 23:40SPEAKER_16: Um I I I got kind of tickled.
- 23:42SPEAKER_16: I I have to tell you that because when I ask you what you know what kind of music you like, you well, I pretty much all over the board, not a big fan of country, but it's okay.
- 23:51SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 23:51SPEAKER_16: But and and rap.
- 23:53SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 23:53SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 23:54SPEAKER_16: I get the same reaction from everybody about rap.
- 23:59SPEAKER_16: I'm sorry, rap fans.
- 24:01SPEAKER_02: And I'm here to promote and try to do you like rap?
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: I love rap.
- 24:06SPEAKER_16: There's some that I like.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, I keep a regular station on my car and or else even on my Spotify of some good, some good gangster rap early in the morning.
- 24:17SPEAKER_16: See, I'm not a big fan.
- 24:19SPEAKER_08: Wow.
- 24:19SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 24:20SPEAKER_08: I'll have to try that.
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: It's like a conference.
- 24:22SPEAKER_16: Does it get you going?
- 24:23SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 24:23SPEAKER_16: Okay.
- 24:24SPEAKER_16: All right.
- 24:25SPEAKER_16: There is a native band that does um some rap.
- 24:29SPEAKER_16: I'm going to try to get the song and played.
- 24:32SPEAKER_16: It's fantastic because they talk about fry bread and it's in this song.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: Well, there's several bands.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: We actually have a local um, he's my favorite indigenous rapper, and that's Def Eye.
- 24:43SPEAKER_16: That may be the guy.
- 24:44SPEAKER_16: Yes.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: Well, Def Eye, yeah.
- 24:46SPEAKER_08: You know of him, huh?
- 24:47SPEAKER_08: Def Eye's one of my favorite.
- 24:48SPEAKER_08: I've seen a concert with him.
- 24:49SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 24:50SPEAKER_08: And and Dad when they were playing together.
- 24:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 24:53SPEAKER_16: You didn't see it.
- 24:54SPEAKER_16: Yes, I did, right?
- 24:56SPEAKER_08: You sound a little surpriser, David.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he did.
- 25:00SPEAKER_08: That's what I said when they asked me.
- 25:01SPEAKER_08: I'm like, you want me?
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: I will let them know that you don't listen to rap.
- 25:06SPEAKER_08: Well, I listened to them that night for sure.
- 25:08SPEAKER_08: Yeah, they were really good.
- 25:09SPEAKER_08: I you know, most genres I can listen to in in small quantities, you know.
- 25:13SPEAKER_08: So I that's why when you asked, you know, for an hour's worth, I thought, well, 80s music for an hour is not bad.
- 25:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 25:19SPEAKER_08: You know, I'm I'm okay with other other stuff, shorter periods.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: Snotty Nose Res Kids is probably who you're talking about.
- 25:26SPEAKER_16: I don't know, but I love this song because they talk about making the fry bread and mama getting upset.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: Reservation dogs.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, something like that.
- 25:36SPEAKER_16: I loved it.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: What was the name?
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: I know what song you're talking about.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: It's fun.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: It's a fun song.
- 25:41SPEAKER_16: Alright, well let's come back.
- 25:41SPEAKER_16: Let's go back and talk about the college, because I don't, I would really like there's so much going on, not the college, but K SJE, the station at the college.
- 25:50SPEAKER_16: Yes.
- 25:51SPEAKER_16: Right?
- 25:51SPEAKER_16: And it's um uh what are we is that a community station?
- 25:56SPEAKER_16: I mean, what's the difference between secular radio and then you have Christian radio and then you have We'll be back after a quick break.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: Is your to-do list too much of a load?
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Is your business piling up?
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Well, you're in luck.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: Have you heard the scoop on the poop group?
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Whether it's poop stool, duty dump, whatever happens at your dog's rump, we'll take care of it.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: We are Farmington's one and only poop scooper.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: We provide weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly pet waste removal services.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Call or text 505-330-0081 to schedule your poop scooping today.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: Don't be fickle with your fecal matter.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: Call the poop group, where your dog's business is our business.
- 26:34SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 26:35SPEAKER_08: KSJE, we're you know, we're licensed as a non-commercial educational station.
- 26:40SPEAKER_08: That's our license, so that we're licensed to the college, and so that's you know, how we have been on the air since 1990.
- 26:48SPEAKER_08: And so, you know, we're we're non-commercial, so we're a little different than the other stations in town.
- 26:53SPEAKER_08: And there are even some, you know, um Christian radio stations that are commercial stations, and that's great.
- 26:58SPEAKER_08: And folks are always a little bit maybe confused as to how they can support us, and they think we're actually supported by the college.
- 27:03SPEAKER_08: And while that was true for a long time during the station's early history, um, we've tried to move away from from that, and the college, I think, is self-supporting.
- 27:12SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we're working towards that, and the college has been uh very patient with us and and supportive in those regards, and so it's really important for me to point out to your audience that you know we you know earn and raise and get about two-thirds of our budget from outside sources beyond the college.
- 27:30SPEAKER_08: College pays for about a third of our budget, and uh and we're always looking for more support.
- 27:35SPEAKER_08: So local businesses can support us, local individuals can support us, and you know, we don't run commercials, but we do run underwriting announcements, and so a local business can certainly get their business announced on KSJE and be promoted almost as well as you can on a commercial station, but we can't just do the the superlative calls to action, and so you can't call yourself the best or the best deal or or whatever, because that's kind of subjective.
- 28:02SPEAKER_16: It is, yeah.
- 28:03SPEAKER_16: Well, I've tried to call myself the best, and it's very subjective.
- 28:06SPEAKER_16: We could call you the best, but well, yes.
- 28:10SPEAKER_16: It's very subjective with people that listen to me on a regular basis.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: I'd like to call myself the best.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 28:18SPEAKER_16: Well, listen, let me let's I I there is so much other stuff to this station that I really want to get out because I I'm I'm not an avid listener, but I've started listening a whole lot more because there's some really uh neat stuff on there.
- 28:31SPEAKER_16: I mean, there's a one show that um, and I don't remember, I think it comes on uh Sunday mornings, maybe, but it's That's your show.
- 28:41SPEAKER_07: That's your show.
- 28:42SPEAKER_16: It's a really cool show.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: You'll see why you'd like it.
- 28:47SPEAKER_16: You'll see why you'd like it.
- 28:48SPEAKER_16: But it's like all over the board.
- 28:49SPEAKER_16: One morning it was some freaking awesome jazz, and then then it was classical music.
- 28:54SPEAKER_16: I don't I I wish I could remember who it was, but uh it was just all over the place, and I thought, well, I'm at the right place.
- 29:01SPEAKER_16: I mean my show's at the right place.
- 29:03SPEAKER_16: There you go.
- 29:04SPEAKER_16: That's right.
- 29:04SPEAKER_16: But uh let's talk about during the week, because you have um, you know, and and uh I know and I'm gonna have Steve Heebe on b before long as well.
- 29:13SPEAKER_16: Um matter of fact, he may be on before this show even airs.
- 29:17SPEAKER_08: Wow, like a time warp.
- 29:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it is like a time warp.
- 29:19SPEAKER_16: But um Police Chief?
- 29:21SPEAKER_16: Yeah, you have other stuff on uh community stuff that is interesting as all get out.
- 29:26SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 29:26SPEAKER_16: Steve Heebe being one of them.
- 29:28SPEAKER_16: I want to call it cop talk, but it's that's not what it's called.
- 29:31SPEAKER_08: Shop, shop based on twice a month, second and fourth Fridays at noon, and uh we've partnered with the police department to do a show on law enforcement, and they're really in control of that of that content.
- 29:41SPEAKER_08: It's not uh necessarily a KSJE show, it's more of a Farmington Police Department show.
- 29:46SPEAKER_08: Um, but they use it as a way to reach out to the community.
- 29:49SPEAKER_08: And of course, you know, we haven't talked anything about our our visual radio studio, which is another part of it, but they use that technology to get the show out on the radio, audio podcasts that you're familiar with, but also the video stream to Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.
- 30:04SPEAKER_16: Right.
- 30:05SPEAKER_16: And your show in the morning.
- 30:07SPEAKER_08: Same thing.
- 30:08SPEAKER_16: Yeah, it's uh uh because we're gonna we have a camera now.
- 30:12SPEAKER_16: We're hopefully gonna go to maybe two or three cameras and we're gonna start doing live feeds as well.
- 30:17SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 30:17SPEAKER_16: Uh obviously, which will be on the website or my website, but yeah, there'll be links so that you know they go back to KSJE and that kind of stuff because we wanna we wanna promote KSJE as much as possible, too, because you guys have been so so good to me.
- 30:30SPEAKER_16: Uh that's cool.
- 30:33SPEAKER_08: It's been fun.
- 30:33SPEAKER_08: It's been fun to add the video cameras.
- 30:35SPEAKER_08: Again, that was one thing that we were looking to do with my brack background in television.
- 30:39SPEAKER_08: You know, that we always thought it'd be great to have a local video source in the community.
- 30:45SPEAKER_08: It's expensive to start a television station or TV newsroom and all that, and so we're not quite able to do that.
- 30:52SPEAKER_08: I wish we were.
- 30:53SPEAKER_08: Um, but we've added the the cameras into the studio and we can do some some video productions um in the studio and found some software that does the switching back and forth without having to hire another TV director and graphics people and all that.
- 31:08SPEAKER_08: It's it's pretty much self-contained, which is really kind of cool.
- 31:11SPEAKER_08: And we've been looking for that for a while and finally got it and installed in 2018.
- 31:16SPEAKER_16: Well, it's fun to watch that.
- 31:17SPEAKER_16: I I catch your program when I'm at the dealership when I get to work because it's um usually eight o'clock in the morning, right?
- 31:25SPEAKER_16: Sure.
- 31:25SPEAKER_16: Uh but it's fun to be able to, because I'll have my phone sitting there and watch and listen, be listening uh with a headset, but have the phone so I can see what's going on.
- 31:35SPEAKER_16: Uh and it's fun to see.
- 31:37SPEAKER_08: We can't get it on the flat panels at the dealership.
- 31:39SPEAKER_08: I wish we could.
- 31:39SPEAKER_08: That would be great.
- 31:40SPEAKER_08: Who do I have to talk to?
- 31:44SPEAKER_16: We don't have a jungle.
- 31:45SPEAKER_16: We do have a TV, though.
- 31:46SPEAKER_16: I think we can probably get it on.
- 31:48SPEAKER_16: Well, listen to it.
- 31:49SPEAKER_08: Thank you.
- 31:49SPEAKER_08: Thank you for doing that.
- 31:50SPEAKER_16: Uh yeah, no, I and but because I'm there's a to be in the know, it's a good place if you want to know what's going on in the community, not just here, but the surrounding area, the surrounding places.
- 32:01SPEAKER_08: So it's a lot about everything that we can and bring on you know regular guests.
- 32:08SPEAKER_08: The school districts have a regular spot on the program.
- 32:11SPEAKER_08: So if you have a student in any of the four local school districts, we're always getting an update from from them.
- 32:16SPEAKER_08: Um, you know, local politics, just had some elections.
- 32:20SPEAKER_08: Um we offered free airtime for the candidates that were running, um, a lot of stuff that's going on.
- 32:25SPEAKER_08: We we tend to focus on a lot of arts and education, as you can see why, because that's our kind of bread and butter.
- 32:31SPEAKER_08: But uh, you know, we try to do a lot of a lot of stuff that maybe isn't on elsewhere.
- 32:35SPEAKER_08: So all right.
- 32:36SPEAKER_16: Well, listen, we're gonna take a quick break.
- 32:38SPEAKER_16: Uh, I have to pay some bills, and then we're gonna come back and talk a little bit more.
- 32:41SPEAKER_16: So stick around.
- 32:42SPEAKER_16: We've got Scott Mecklin from KSJE is in studio.
- 32:46SPEAKER_16: Uh theCapo Studios is where we're recording today, and I'm thankful for Scott to come by.
- 32:50SPEAKER_16: And I gotta tell you, I'm excited because I'm gonna have Scott help me answer an email.
- 32:54SPEAKER_16: You're gonna Okay.
- 32:55SPEAKER_16: Yeah, you have to help answer an email.
- 32:59SPEAKER_16: Uh it's just part of the program.
- 33:01SPEAKER_16: Yes, just so you know.
- 33:02SPEAKER_16: Sure.
- 33:03SPEAKER_16: And we don't let you go until you answer one.
- 33:04SPEAKER_16: Okay.
- 33:05SPEAKER_16: Okay?
- 33:06SPEAKER_16: And I'll answer.
- 33:07SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 33:07SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 33:08SPEAKER_16: Um, so I want to talk a little bit about we're talking to Sc uh Scott Mickland.
- 33:12SPEAKER_16: Um I want to talk a little bit more about the programming that the more of the programming, because there's a multitude of programming on your uh on KSJE, on this wonderful community station that's located at the college.
- 33:25SPEAKER_16: Um what comes on um what is it that comes on right after you in the mornings?
- 33:32SPEAKER_08: That is our long time, and I mean long time since we started the 1990 classical music program, Roving with the Arts.
- 33:39SPEAKER_08: Nick Hess is the host.
- 33:40SPEAKER_08: You may know Mick.
- 33:41SPEAKER_16: I don't.
- 33:43SPEAKER_08: Famous local trumpet player.
- 33:45SPEAKER_08: Um he performs with some local groups around.
- 33:49SPEAKER_08: Um but yeah, he's been here for I think I need to get him on the podcast.
- 33:52SPEAKER_16: He probably should.
- 33:53SPEAKER_16: I bet I'd love to talk about it.
- 33:55SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and uh and uh you know he took that program over.
- 34:00SPEAKER_08: Um, you know, Connie Gotch uh was the first host of Robin with the Arts.
- 34:05SPEAKER_08: She was our first program director who was hired as a station um came on the air in 1990, and of course the Connie Gotch Arts Foundation, we hear about them a lot because when she passed away, she bequeathed all of her estate to this foundation to be used to support the arts in San Juan County.
- 34:21SPEAKER_08: It's not a state thing, it's a local San Juan County thing, and they have been giving away money ever since.
- 34:27SPEAKER_08: You know, the most recent uh major donation was the renovation of the the theater at San Juan College.
- 34:33SPEAKER_08: Used to be called the Little Theater, it's now called the Conigotch Theater, because um the foundation gave uh a big chunk of money to to renovate and improve the the theater.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's a a lot of good uh fundraisers under that under her name.
- 34:46SPEAKER_02: And how is that?
- 34:47SPEAKER_08: They've paid for scholarships and music lessons for folks.
- 34:50SPEAKER_08: I mean, and and coming out of the pandemic, they had a special program to pay the salaries of musicians.
- 34:56SPEAKER_08: If like a restaurant wanted to have live music again, um they would pay the the salaries of the musicians so the restaurant could just you know work on reopening and and have live music, but the salaries were paid by the Kati Gotch Foundation.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: Um I was lucky enough to get two uh fo um pieces of art.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: So I've had a couple of those hanging up in the photographer, right?
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: Beautiful pieces.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, wow.
- 35:19SPEAKER_16: So all right, so more of the programming.
- 35:22SPEAKER_16: What's uh what's on during the day?
- 35:23SPEAKER_16: Let's talk a basic weekday.
- 35:25SPEAKER_16: So basic weekdays.
- 35:27SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 35:27SPEAKER_08: Before me, we have um the BBC News Hour program from uh I've caught some of that, too.
- 35:32SPEAKER_08: And that starts at 7 a.m.
- 35:34SPEAKER_08: Um they do a great job covering um world news, world news, international news, but even North American news as well, you know, when there's a big story.
- 35:42SPEAKER_08: But it's a different perspective.
- 35:43SPEAKER_08: So, you know, you may not have heard about unrest in Africa, let's say, but the BBC will will put a big, you know, story together about it because they're looking at the whole global news cycle and and what's going on.
- 35:55SPEAKER_08: Then I come on at 8, um, and then at 9 it's Mick.
- 35:59SPEAKER_08: Wednesdays at 10.30.
- 36:01SPEAKER_08: Mick has a special 90-minute show, and then he goes to 10:30.
- 36:05SPEAKER_08: 10:30, we have our local and regional author program, which has again been going on for a long time called Right on Four Corners.
- 36:12SPEAKER_08: Uh Tracy Hells Vass, who is a former professor from San Juan College, retired, founder of the One Book, One Community Program.
- 36:19SPEAKER_08: She hosts that program for us and speaks with, you know, local and regional authors about their books.
- 36:24SPEAKER_08: It could be fiction, nonfiction, um, whatever the case may be, or they could have written about the four corners and maybe they live somewhere else.
- 36:31SPEAKER_08: But that's kind of been the plug for that for that program.
- 36:34SPEAKER_08: And then we go to classical for uh the rest of the morning at noon every day.
- 36:38SPEAKER_08: We usually have some kind of a talk show, kind of an informative show in the lunch hour from noon to one.
- 36:44SPEAKER_08: It it changes every day.
- 36:45SPEAKER_08: There's a philosophy show on Tuesdays called Philosophy Talk.
- 36:49SPEAKER_08: There's a peaceful um show uh peace talks radio is what it's called, and the shows focusing on nonviolent conflict resolution and things along that line.
- 36:59SPEAKER_08: That's produced in Albuquerque, by the by the way.
- 37:03SPEAKER_08: Um we have an Inside Europe program, another kind of European news program.
- 37:07SPEAKER_08: Uh we have a storytime program produced by uh BYU Radio out of Salt Lake City called the Appleseed.
- 37:14SPEAKER_08: If you've ever been to the storytelling festival that the library has put on over the years, it's a lot of those types of stories and a lot of those tellers.
- 37:21SPEAKER_08: In fact, he was here, the host of that show, um, was here a couple of times to record stories and put them into the show.
- 37:28SPEAKER_08: So it's called the Appleseed.
- 37:29SPEAKER_08: And then on Fridays is that cop shop show that we've talked about.
- 37:32SPEAKER_08: We also have a science program um on Fridays as well, another book program when the cop shop isn't on the air.
- 37:39SPEAKER_08: So and then afternoons are jazzed.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I looked at your your lineup and there was I mean, I kept kind of going and going.
- 37:48SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you can scroll forever.
- 37:49SPEAKER_08: It's true.
- 37:50SPEAKER_08: It's true.
- 37:50SPEAKER_08: You know, we go to jazz, you know, one to five, and then five o'clock, it's more um, we have a newscast at the top of the hour.
- 37:57SPEAKER_08: Then we do Marketplace, which is a really popular business show, kind of wrapping up the day, it changes every day.
- 38:02SPEAKER_08: Uh wraps up the day's um business news, stock markets, you know, what's going on in the world and what's affecting prices and things like that.
- 38:10SPEAKER_08: And then usually at six, well, not usually, every day, Monday through Friday at six, we have Exploring Music, which is a great show that kind of delves into classical music.
- 38:18SPEAKER_08: So if you ever wondered why um a piece of music sounds a certain way or why you remember it, you know, he really gets into the host, gets into the makeup of the classical music, and then seven to nine is usually a classical music concert from one of the great symphonies around the country.
- 38:33SPEAKER_08: And then we have more classical into the evening.
- 38:36SPEAKER_16: You but you're doing something with Megan Cullop Cullop.
- 38:41SPEAKER_08: Yeah, what is that?
- 38:42SPEAKER_16: That's that's uh I missed that, and I'm trying to catch that.
- 38:47SPEAKER_08: That's that's on my show on Fridays.
- 38:49SPEAKER_08: Is that what the deal is?
- 38:50SPEAKER_08: We're kind of taking that over, and every other Friday.
- 38:53SPEAKER_08: And so we we started working together during the during a COVID show.
- 38:58SPEAKER_08: Um, and of course, as COVID kind of raised and fell, we we expanded that to four days a week, then we went back to one day a week.
- 39:04SPEAKER_08: Now we're doing it every other week on Fridays at eight o'clock.
- 39:07SPEAKER_08: So um we do that.
- 39:08SPEAKER_08: And then on the other alternative weeks, we do a new show called Solutions from the Street.
- 39:14SPEAKER_08: Maybe that's what you're thinking of.
- 39:15SPEAKER_16: Yeah, it could be.
- 39:16SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 39:16SPEAKER_08: And so we were talking, we're like, what can we do for the community that's more solutions-based journalism that's not just reporting on the problems, but reporting on a solution.
- 39:27SPEAKER_08: And so that's what we've tried to do with that show.
- 39:29SPEAKER_08: So it's about 30 minutes every other Friday, finding, you know, a guest that can represent the solution to a problem.
- 39:36SPEAKER_08: And it's not, and we try to avoid like government solutions because they have lots of you know ideas that may or may not work.
- 39:44SPEAKER_08: And but we try to find local individuals or local groups that have said, you know, here's a problem, and we're gonna try to fix it and bring them on the show and talk to them.
- 39:51SPEAKER_08: And it has to be local, is the other thing.
- 39:53SPEAKER_08: And so we've done a few shows like that and launched it uh this fall, and um, you know, it's been a lot of fun to do and meet some really cool people.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: I think that'd be fun to do um on the street.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: Yes, right, literally.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like on the street and just talk to somebody and say, hey, right, how would you fix this?
- 40:10SPEAKER_16: You know, it intimidates people when you shove a microphone on their face.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: Okay, maybe not shove a microphone.
- 40:15SPEAKER_16: Yeah, maybe just speaking from experience.
- 40:18SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 40:19SPEAKER_16: And you'll notice is the more you do this, when somebody Scott's an old pro, but somebody when they sit down behind the microphone, they get a little they they may be talking a bunch outside, and then they sit down here and you can't get a little yeah, it's that public speaking thing again.
- 40:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that's what happens, that's true.
- 40:35SPEAKER_08: And yeah, old pro.
- 40:37SPEAKER_08: I heard that.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: I heard that.
- 40:41SPEAKER_16: Was that the wrong thing to say?
- 40:43SPEAKER_08: Seasoned, seasoned, seasoned.
- 40:45SPEAKER_08: Seasoned, okay.
- 40:45SPEAKER_16: All right, seasoned.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: I feel like that makes you sound like a cast iron.
- 40:49SPEAKER_16: Listen, they call me an old fart.
- 40:51SPEAKER_16: So an old pro is a good one.
- 40:53SPEAKER_16: All right, that's a step up.
- 40:55SPEAKER_16: Yes, sir.
- 40:55SPEAKER_16: All right, let's play the laha, what do you say?
- 44:37SPEAKER_16: I mean, we've talked about it in the other show, you know.
- 44:40SPEAKER_16: Did you have the big hair in the 80s?
- 44:42SPEAKER_08: Not intentionally.
- 44:43SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 44:44SPEAKER_16: But you said something about this um aha song that I wanted to put uh that I wanted to put out there.
- 44:50SPEAKER_16: What what did you say this was?
- 44:52SPEAKER_08: I used that and my college radio show as a kind of bumper music, the instrumental part of the uh take on me.
- 44:58SPEAKER_16: Oh, no kidding.
- 44:59SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 45:00SPEAKER_08: And everybody we were the college station was a what we call new music radio.
- 45:04SPEAKER_08: So it wasn't a top 40 pop station at all.
- 45:07SPEAKER_08: It was all the breaking new, you know, newer music back in the back in the 80s.
- 45:11SPEAKER_08: And so a lot of the people, the other disc jockeys, didn't like my show because it sounded too professional and they thought I was a sellout.
- 45:19SPEAKER_08: And I would use songs like that on my show.
- 45:22SPEAKER_08: And take phone calls and record it and play it back on the on the air, and and you know, because that's what the big time radio announcers were doing.
- 45:30SPEAKER_08: So you know I want to try to do that.
- 45:32SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 45:32SPEAKER_08: Learn how to do it.
- 45:33SPEAKER_16: I I always enjoyed that kind of thing.
- 45:35SPEAKER_16: Recording the phone calls when they came in.
- 45:37SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 45:38SPEAKER_08: On a real-to-reel kids.
- 45:40SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 45:41SPEAKER_16: They don't even know what a reality.
- 45:46SPEAKER_16: What is that?
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: Like what kind of real?
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: Like, are we spelling it R-E-E-L?
- 45:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:52SPEAKER_08: No, it was a real.
- 45:54SPEAKER_08: Reel to reel.
- 45:55SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 45:55SPEAKER_08: R-E-A-L-R-E-E-L.
- 45:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: Look it up.
- 46:01SPEAKER_02: Google it.
- 46:01SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna do, I'm gonna Google that later.
- 46:03SPEAKER_16: Turntables.
- 46:04SPEAKER_16: We talked about you did turntables too, right?
- 46:06SPEAKER_16: Did you do the the scratch, the burn-in scratch on the intros?
- 46:10SPEAKER_16: Slip shoes and all that.
- 46:11SPEAKER_16: Yes, sir, of course.
- 46:12SPEAKER_16: Making sure.
- 46:13SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 46:13SPEAKER_06: Scott is a pro.
- 46:17SPEAKER_16: Well, I seasoned.
- 46:18SPEAKER_16: Not old.
- 46:19SPEAKER_16: He's seasoned.
- 46:20SPEAKER_16: That's okay.
- 46:21SPEAKER_16: Right.
- 46:21SPEAKER_16: Alright, I'm gonna get you to answer an email with me.
- 46:23SPEAKER_16: Okay, well, here we go.
- 46:24SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 46:25SPEAKER_16: Oh, hold on, let me find it.
- 46:26SPEAKER_16: Okay.
- 46:26SPEAKER_16: I redid this board completely.
- 46:28SPEAKER_03: You've got questions?
- 46:30SPEAKER_03: You got an email.
- 46:31SPEAKER_03: We've got answers.
- 46:33SPEAKER_03: An email! You may not like the answers, but we got them.
- 46:37SPEAKER_03: We just got an email.
- 46:41SPEAKER_03: I wonder who it's from.
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: Ask Ren and David.
- 46:45SPEAKER_04: Who are you?
- 46:46SPEAKER_04: Glosser wise in the ways of science.
- 46:50SPEAKER_16: Alright.
- 46:50SPEAKER_16: I I kinda I kinda like this one.
- 46:53SPEAKER_16: I picked this one because I think this is a good one to try to answer.
- 46:55SPEAKER_16: And actually, um, I don't know, it kind of irritates me a little, but we're gonna talk about it.
- 47:00SPEAKER_16: It's uh this comes from Lena, L-I-N-A, and I think, or maybe Lena, Lina, maybe?
- 47:05SPEAKER_16: I don't know.
- 47:06SPEAKER_16: L-I-N-A.
- 47:08SPEAKER_02: I think it's Lena.
- 47:09SPEAKER_16: I don't think I've ever seen it spelt that way.
- 47:10SPEAKER_16: Anyway, she says, help.
- 47:11SPEAKER_16: I'm trying to get my boyfriend to quit his job.
- 47:14SPEAKER_16: My boyfriend has been working for the same company for seven years.
- 47:18SPEAKER_16: He's gotten one raise.
- 47:19SPEAKER_16: His boss doesn't respect him, and the other hires never last if they are good.
- 47:25SPEAKER_16: I keep telling him that there's a lot of jobs right now and to just quit.
- 47:30SPEAKER_16: I don't make a ton of money, but enough to sustain us both until he can find something else.
- 47:36SPEAKER_16: He was he has too much pride to quit without another job lined up.
- 47:42SPEAKER_16: But not enough motivation to seriously look for a job.
- 47:47SPEAKER_16: What can I do?
- 47:49SPEAKER_16: Signed frustrated Lena.
- 47:52SPEAKER_16: Wow.
- 47:53SPEAKER_16: I know, Lena.
- 47:55SPEAKER_08: That's a good question.
- 47:56SPEAKER_16: Does he like his job?
- 47:58SPEAKER_16: Well, that's just it, I mean.
- 47:59SPEAKER_16: Right?
- 47:59SPEAKER_16: Because if you like your job, it's not really a job, is it?
- 48:02SPEAKER_16: No.
- 48:02SPEAKER_16: I would say that for me, I you know, I'll take a dollar an hour if I love the job.
- 48:08SPEAKER_16: Right.
- 48:08SPEAKER_16: You know, as long as I can put food on the table and pay the rent.
- 48:11SPEAKER_16: She didn't say any of that.
- 48:12SPEAKER_16: I think that would be my next question.
- 48:14SPEAKER_16: Right.
- 48:15SPEAKER_16: Is she wanting lavish things or I don't know.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: That really bothers me.
- 48:19SPEAKER_16: Like I I'm really we don't we're not liking Lena as what you're not liking.
- 48:23SPEAKER_08: Well, I don't know, you know, and if he's not motivated, Lena, do you want to literally hit your wagon to this guy?
- 48:27SPEAKER_08: Well, that's let's take yeah, let's take Lena's side for a second.
- 48:31SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying, no offense, boyfriend, but we apologize to Lena.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 48:37SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 48:37SPEAKER_16: Well, no, I'm I'm kind of I'm kind of done offense the other way, but Scott's got a solid point.
- 48:43SPEAKER_16: I mean, I'm kind of like, you know, if I like my job.
- 48:46SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 48:47SPEAKER_16: Let me just say, I'm talking from experience.
- 48:50SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 48:50SPEAKER_16: Okay?
- 48:51SPEAKER_16: I'm just wanted because I took a lesser-paying job with the last wife I was with, and we're not together anymore.
- 48:58SPEAKER_16: Well, there you go, Lena.
- 49:02SPEAKER_02: Get it together.
- 49:03SPEAKER_16: Just saying, all right, we're gonna let that go.
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: You have been listening to Ask Ren and David articulated, well-thought-out answers to your well-articulated thought-out questions.
- 49:22SPEAKER_12: Wake it up, wake it up, wake it up!
- 49:24SPEAKER_03: If you would like your questions answered, email the general's wake up call at gmail.com.
- 52:57SPEAKER_16: Well, it's not dark and we're not dancing, but I don't know.
- 53:00SPEAKER_16: I almost says.
- 53:01SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 53:02SPEAKER_16: Are you sitting overstairs, Scott?
- 53:04SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 53:05SPEAKER_16: Did I see that?
- 53:07SPEAKER_16: Uh I missed it.
- 53:08SPEAKER_16: And I would, you know, if you'd got up and started dancing, I probably would have done a live feed immediately.
- 53:13SPEAKER_16: I bet you would have.
- 53:15SPEAKER_16: I wouldn't have missed a beat, I'm promise.
- 53:17SPEAKER_02: Well, that was the song that Monica goes up on stage and dances with the boss.
- 53:21SPEAKER_16: Oh.
- 53:22SPEAKER_02: Remember that?
- 53:23SPEAKER_02: From Friends.
- 53:24SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 53:25SPEAKER_16: Is that who's on stage with him?
- 53:27SPEAKER_02: That's when she first I don't this is just a rumor.
- 53:30SPEAKER_02: Maybe I'm not hearing it right, but I think that's when she first got discovered with um or maybe she was already an actress.
- 53:38SPEAKER_16: I know I remember seeing the the woman up there and but I didn't know that was Monica.
- 53:43SPEAKER_16: I'm gonna have to look it up now.
- 53:46SPEAKER_16: Okay.
- 53:47SPEAKER_16: Thank you for that little bit of worthless information.
- 53:51SPEAKER_16: But it's still good.
- 53:54SPEAKER_06: Worthless information.
- 53:56SPEAKER_16: Yeah, epitome.
- 53:58SPEAKER_16: You're gonna fit in quite well.
- 53:59SPEAKER_16: That's my way.
- 54:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:03SPEAKER_16: All right, we're talking to Scott Micklin.
- 54:05SPEAKER_16: I appreciate you taking Sunday off and uh coming in and saying hello with KSJE, but I want to talk about the plans coming forward and anything else that you want to promote, too, that's coming forward uh for KSJE and for 2022.
- 54:19SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 54:20SPEAKER_08: Well, I mean, again, we are the community station.
- 54:23SPEAKER_08: We're trying to do more with the community, for the community.
- 54:26SPEAKER_08: Uh you know, reach out to us if you you know have an event coming up.
- 54:29SPEAKER_08: We have a pretty uh robust events calendar on our website, which we try to make a regional calendar.
- 54:35SPEAKER_08: So it includes events from Durango and Cortez and Bloomfield and Aztec and Farmington and Kirtland and even down into Albuquerque, Santa Fe.
- 54:43SPEAKER_08: So we really try to you know focus on a lot of arts and art-related events, nonprofit events and things like that.
- 54:48SPEAKER_08: So I always like to remind folks about that if you're business.
- 54:52SPEAKER_08: Um and you maybe want to reach a new uh population uh percentage here in San Juan County, you know, I would have you consider KSJE, you know, and our listeners, I think you're pretty unique, and they may not be listening to your ads on the other stations, no offense, other stations, but that's true.
- 55:08SPEAKER_08: You know, I don't know how many folks that listen to classical and jazz and country or pop, but you know, I think we have a unique audience.
- 55:14SPEAKER_08: So I would include I would encourage folks to do that.
- 55:17SPEAKER_08: And then you know, we we do have some exciting plans.
- 55:20SPEAKER_08: Um, of course, we have uh the Connie Macworld series coming up this summer.
- 55:24SPEAKER_16: I'm glad you brought that up because I think that is such a you guys did such a great job.
- 55:28SPEAKER_16: You're the the broadcast staff, the sportscasters that you had uh did such a wonderful job with that last year.
- 55:36SPEAKER_16: So thank you.
- 55:38SPEAKER_08: We were lucky that we inherited all that that whole team and kept the team together.
- 55:42SPEAKER_08: That was kind of the whole idea why they approached us to say, you know, we already have this group of broadcasters who worked for the other station who that got sold, and they didn't want to break up the team, and they said, Could we just come to your station and and keep our team intact and and do the games like we've always done them?
- 55:58SPEAKER_08: We've got almost 20 years of experience, and we said, sure, we'll figure out how to do it.
- 56:02SPEAKER_08: I would I didn't know how to do it, but we said we figured out how to do it.
- 56:05SPEAKER_08: I guess we figured it out.
- 56:06SPEAKER_16: That's what I like about Scott.
- 56:09SPEAKER_08: We'll do it.
- 56:09SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I don't know how we're gonna do it, but we'll figure it out.
- 56:12SPEAKER_08: That's right.
- 56:12SPEAKER_08: But it's a great event, it's a great community event.
- 56:15SPEAKER_08: It was great to have it back last year, and we're thrilled to have it again this year.
- 56:19SPEAKER_08: We have a three-year deal with the ConnieMac committee, um, and so we hope they're happy with it.
- 56:24SPEAKER_08: Uh we're looking for ways to bring more value to that agreement.
- 56:27SPEAKER_08: Um, you know, I the idea might be uh maybe covering the parade um on the radio.
- 56:33SPEAKER_08: Oh, that'd be great.
- 56:34SPEAKER_08: Or maybe doing some streaming video of the parade for the out-of-town folks, because we saw a huge increase in listeners from out of the market um for for folks who are following their their kids on those teams that come here from all over the place, and we're the only way they can they can hear those games.
- 56:48SPEAKER_08: Um and so and we appreciate all the support.
- 56:51SPEAKER_08: We had a lot of business support for the Connie Mac broadcasts, and so you know that was a great thing to see too.
- 56:56SPEAKER_08: And I think uh it was a great thing for the station.
- 56:58SPEAKER_08: So we're excited about doing that again this summer.
- 57:00SPEAKER_16: Yeah, I'm excited for it.
- 57:02SPEAKER_16: Yeah, I mean, uh because I love that team.
- 57:04SPEAKER_16: I mean, I listened to most of the game.
- 57:06SPEAKER_16: Well, not most, but they know their stuff.
- 57:10SPEAKER_16: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:11SPEAKER_07: I mean, yeah.
- 57:14SPEAKER_07: And the kids too are great.
- 57:17SPEAKER_02: But I mean of course, and your broadcast team.
- 57:19SPEAKER_08: Well, yeah, but I mean the whole entire Don Don Lorette, you know, Coach Lorette, and Coach Carpenter.
- 57:24SPEAKER_08: I mean, come on.
- 57:25SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 57:26SPEAKER_08: What do you can talk to baseball about with those two guys?
- 57:29SPEAKER_08: So exactly and the and the rest, not to uh say anything about them, but they're you know, they were they're great parts of the team, and it it was it really worked out well.
- 57:37SPEAKER_08: So we were thrilled.
- 57:38SPEAKER_16: It did there's good chemistry.
- 57:39SPEAKER_16: That's just yes, they I'm glad that they kept them together because so many times that stuff gets they get the guys get split up, uh morning teams get split up, and that chemistry that you build with somebody, it it it it's not the same as doing a radio show when you're doing a game, and it's nice to have somebody a step ahead of you.
- 57:59SPEAKER_16: And they can you know you can tell that when listening to the game, they know each other very well.
- 58:04SPEAKER_08: The other thing we're excited about that I want to share um is you know the the colleges building storms for the first time ever.
- 58:11SPEAKER_16: That's right.
- 58:12SPEAKER_08: Um so we're hoping to do some more things once they open the dormitories in the fall of 2022, um, because we'll now have a 24-7 student population on campus, and so um that'll mean more more student broadcasts, maybe some more students involved with KSJE, and so we're trying to come up with some plans of of what we can do when the dorms open uh in the fall, which is kind of exciting for the college.
- 58:38SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 58:38SPEAKER_02: Not not for me personally, but it's you know the community.
- 58:42SPEAKER_16: Is it the fall of 2022 that they're opening or twenty-one?
- 58:49SPEAKER_08: Yeah, so it's next next fall in 2022.
- 58:54SPEAKER_08: That's the that's the plan.
- 58:55SPEAKER_08: I think everything's on schedule so far, but you know how construction goes, but so far so good.
- 59:00SPEAKER_02: And it's so hard to plan things with a blooming pandemic and kind of just get around it.
- 59:06SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 59:06SPEAKER_16: And it goes in cups.
- 59:07SPEAKER_16: That's right.
- 59:08SPEAKER_16: It's an ever-moving bar.
- 59:09SPEAKER_16: That's true.
- 59:10SPEAKER_08: But the college has hired some folks to deal with student life and student activities and and all those things, and so we're excited to have more there'll be a lot more I think college programs for students, a lot you know, the pride cafeteria will be open more hours and more offerings and all that all that stuff.
- 59:26SPEAKER_08: So it'll change a lot of things up there, I think.
- 59:28SPEAKER_08: All right, man.
- 59:29SPEAKER_16: We're about out of time.
- 59:30SPEAKER_16: I really appreciate you.
- 59:31SPEAKER_16: It happens every time.
- 59:34SPEAKER_16: It does, it really does.
- 59:35SPEAKER_16: It's been fun.
- 59:37SPEAKER_16: Thank you.
- 59:38SPEAKER_16: Um you're welcome anytime.
- 59:41SPEAKER_16: Thank you.
- 59:41SPEAKER_16: Uh but let's uh let's definitely make sure that you keep me in touch with what anything new happening, because I'll be more than happy to put it on the uh on the podcast.
- 59:51SPEAKER_16: That's right.
- 59:51SPEAKER_16: Not just the podcast, but we'll do it on the radio program so that we're doing saying the same things the station is saying.
- 59:58SPEAKER_16: I was gonna say too, before I forget, when you were talking about uh beginning uh doing advertising, it you is that can we call it advertising on the underwriting?
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_08: Underwriting you know, underwriting announcements because we can't do commercials, right?
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_08: But you know, we can say about 90% of what you can say in a commercial.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_16: The thing the the I think the big difference is there's not like local radio, regular radio has gotten so commercialized, uh I what I've noticed is that you don't have to wait like eight minutes before the program to continue.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_16: That's right.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_16: You know, it's a lot shorter, it's uh uh and you and so it's to me it's better, it's a better quality.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_08: Well, and I think you know, if your message stands out because there's less of them in that exact stop set, if you will, yeah.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_08: That folks are hearing at a time.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_08: So I do want to wish everyone a very happy and healthy new year.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_16: Thank you, sir.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_08: And uh and a great 2022, and uh, we're moving forward.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_16: All right.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_16: Thank you, Scott.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_16: Appreciate you coming in.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_08: Thank you very much.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_03: Gonna give you a little break.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_09: I like where this is going.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_03: Hang tight.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_03: We'll be back.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_00: Habanero Grill is like uh duct tape, it fixes everything.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_16: I dreamt of a burrito.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_16: Today I'm eating one.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_16: Followed my dream straight to Habanero Grill.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_00: A burrito is a sleeping bag for all of your favorite habanero grill ingredients.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_16: People are dying to wrap their hands around that deliciousness.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_00: Habanero Grill, 5600 Mickey Bride, right across Main Street from Memory Gardens.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_16: I'll head for quick pickup.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_16: 505-787-2955.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_16: That's 505-787-2955.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_12: The most scrumptious burrito in the four corners.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_12: My name is Gary.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_12: I'm a local business owner here in Farmington.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_12: I've purchased a few vehicles from Web Toyota, and my salesperson was David Mills.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_12: Love doing business with David.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_12: Uh he's very down-to-earth, he's honest, just a real guy.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_12: And I like doing business with somebody like that.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_12: I always enjoy keeping my business here local and try to uh keep the economy here in Farmington going.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_12: And so anytime I can do business here, that's really important.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_12: But I like being competitive, and so all the prices that I've seen at Web Toyota has been very competitively priced with cars you can find uh nationally or on the internet.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_12: Service after the sale has been really important to me as well, and I found that they are top-notch in how they care for their customers after the sale.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_12: So my recommendation is if anybody's looking for a new or used vehicle to give Web Toyota and David Mills a try.

- 1:03:03SPEAKER_03: This is even better.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_04: We're back.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_16: I don't know what that meant.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_16: Okay, hurry up and get your ass out of here.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_16: Wrap it up.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_16: Wrap it up.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_16: That's typically what that means.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_16: Somebody gives you that beat and bounce just our host just walks by.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_16: Right on me?
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_04: Woo!
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_16: Our host just walked by with his swinging his finger in the air.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_16: And so I'm like, I'm not sure what that means.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_16: AJ knows.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_16: Get your ass out of here, is what it means.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_02: Pack it up and get out.

- 1:08:56SPEAKER_16: Yeah, what are you gonna do differently?
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_02: I want like everybody else to be a better person.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_02: I want to be nicer, you know, and I wanna be uh I want to be more giving and more um more forgiving.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_02: You know.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_16: I posted something a while back on Facebook um about the early shows, the shows that I grew up with, like All in the Family and uh Jefferson's and um oh my god, I love that one with Red Fox and uh you know what I'm talking about.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_02: You big dummy! Yes!
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_16: I don't remember the name of that show.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_16: But um I I want people to uh it's it's time to quit being so sensitive.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_16: Um but to k and to start caring about sensitive in a different way.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_02: Yes, in a different way.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_16: To be more caring about one another.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_16: So that's my New Year's hope for people.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_16: Do I have res Do you have resolutions?
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_16: Do you have a new year resolutions?
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_02: I don't ever I stopped doing those a while back in my teens.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_02: I gave up in my teens.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_02: Um I try to do something different.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, I I try to maybe you know I try to work on my character a little bit, you know.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_02: I try to be a little bit more better version of me.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_02: And then I don't know how it pans out because you know, usually it kind of dies out and you kind of forget about it, but you know, hopefully you carry that.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_16: Yeah, mostly that's a good idea.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_16: Mostly your resolutions are broken like a week after.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_02: I I don't make ones that are really, you know, like I'm not gonna eat candy, you know, or or soda or you know.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_02: I want it to be if it's gonna be a good thing.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_16: Don't set yourself up for failure, right?
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_02: You know, I want it to be something that's not tangible.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_16: Let's play a song.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_16: Okay, we're back.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_16: Um you know, we're talking about New Year's resolutions.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_16: I I I I I don't know.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_16: 2022, I think I'm I my prayer is that it's better for everybody all the way around.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_16: That we quit being so sensitive, uh, quit getting our feelings hurt so easily, uh, suck it up, buttercup is I've been told by spouses in the past.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_16: Uh but to be tolerant of I mean I don't know that we've come across a subject that we disagree on.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_16: But if we ever did, I would hope that people that do that, uh like I can say to you, AJ, uh, I don't we're just gonna have to agree to disagree.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_16: I still love you with all my heart, but we're gonna have to agree to disagree and move on.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_02: I think it's advice.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_02: You know, and it's it's it's something that everybody should kind of look at it too, because it's you know, we can't bicker all over the same thing forever.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_02: It's it's like it's such a waste of time.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_02: Energy.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_02: And energy.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_16: Listen, here's the deal, and here's what I challenge, I'm gonna challenge everybody, and you may already do this, but in the morning when you wake up, there's really it boils down to there's two decisions to make.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_16: Okay?
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_16: One, you're either gonna be happy, or two, you're gonna be pissed off all day.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_16: So what what I have done in the past and it's worked for me, and I need to get back.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_16: This is my this is if it's a New Year's resolution, so be it.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_16: But it's so easy, it can be done every morning in the mirror.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_16: I look in the mirror, I cannot look in the mirror because I look too old.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_16: I'm like, who's that in the who's in my house?
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_16: I've told that before, but um I'm gonna I'm gonna look in the mirror and say, nobody is gonna break my stride today.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_16: Nobody's gonna upset me.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_16: And I and I promise when I was doing that when I was in management with Sears, uh, when I did that, it would have made it so uh it would have made it so much easier to get to the Oh yeah.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_02: I think when you look at yourself and you actually say it kind of Yeah, I know, you have to kinda do it.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_02: You know what it is.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_16: I'm gonna challenge you to do that.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_02: Okay.
