- 1:24Speaker 1: the podcast from the Volume Podcast Network. I am Shad Mellman,
- 1:28Speaker 1: Chief Content Officer of the Action Network. There is no
- 1:34Speaker 1: more important position in all of sports then quarterback in
- 1:43Speaker 1: the NFL. My bff, my companion mikel Padre, Simon Hunter
- 1:48Speaker 1: professional better. How often are we talking about our belief
- 1:52Speaker 1: and quarterbacks and whether or not we believe we can
- 1:55Speaker 1: win as betters on a particular quarterback's every thing right?
- 2:00Speaker 1: We always talk all the time, chatted to either people
- 2:02Speaker 1: under value quarterbacks, over valuing quarterbacks and the understanding quarterbacks
- 2:06Speaker 1: get better depending on the system and the coach with him.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So we talk a lot the time. Brother. It's like,
- 2:11Speaker 1: if I'm looking for a big advantage, I can find
- 2:14Speaker 1: a lot of times in a quarterback that's underrated. Which
- 2:16Speaker 1: one of my favorite quarterbacks ever, Nick Foles, Right quarterback,
- 2:20Speaker 1: right situation, right system, We saw what could happen. So
- 2:24Speaker 1: I love talking QBS. Chad knows this and especially NFL Draft.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I feel like me and you especially because this shows
- 2:30Speaker 1: so mainstream. That's what we talked about, right like that
- 2:32Speaker 1: year with the five quarterbacks. Last year, that was everything
- 2:35Speaker 1: we talked about quarterbacks for about a month. So yeah,
- 2:39Speaker 1: we we know we get at the NFL pulse. People
- 2:42Speaker 1: care about their football teams, but in the end, people
- 2:44Speaker 1: care about the quarterbacks, like interchangeable because of fantasy football.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Maybe that's how it is, But like, why would I
- 2:50Speaker 1: like Tom Brady, Why would I like Aaron Rodgers. I
- 2:52Speaker 1: should hate those guys, but I like them. It's just
- 2:56Speaker 1: it's just different than other sports where we love the
- 2:58Speaker 1: superstar quarterbacks. That's why I'm excited about today's guest. There's
- 3:05Speaker 1: nobody more qualified to look into the mind, body, and
- 3:11Speaker 1: soul of quarterbacks from the high school level to the
- 3:14Speaker 1: college level to the pro level. Former NFL player Jordan Palmer,
- 3:19Speaker 1: he is an expert on the quarterback position, the man
- 3:22Speaker 1: behind the elite training camp QB Summit, He's become the
- 3:25Speaker 1: go to coach for prospective NFL quarterbacks, including recently Josh Allen,
- 3:32Speaker 1: Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence. Also unquestionably the greatest quarterback in
- 3:36Speaker 1: the history of the U TEP Miners. You TEP of course,
- 3:39Speaker 1: for everyone who listens to Big Bets on Campus from
- 3:42Speaker 1: the Action Network, everyone knows how much we love the
- 3:45Speaker 1: U TEP miners. Jordan Palmer, Welcome to the show, brother,
- 3:50Speaker 1: Thanks for having me man. I love when when I
- 3:54Speaker 1: here's some folks who are not within the border of
- 3:56Speaker 1: Opasso who have some you tep love. Because that's a
- 3:58Speaker 1: few and far between, say, uh, it's it's we. We
- 4:02Speaker 1: launched Action Network four years ago and uh two of
- 4:07Speaker 1: our most prominent college football analysts have been hosting a
- 4:13Speaker 1: podcast this entire time that has gotten more and more popular,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and it has a segment on there where people call
- 4:19Speaker 1: in and leave voicemails where they complain about the picks
- 4:22Speaker 1: they've made, or they just complain about the bests that
- 4:25Speaker 1: uh they've made themselves. And inevitably there will be a
- 4:30Speaker 1: string of voicemails from people who are really upset or
- 4:34Speaker 1: really happy or defending or feeling slighted because of their
- 4:38Speaker 1: fandom or the best they've made. On YouTube football, it
- 4:42Speaker 1: is a constant theme every single season. We're talking minor
- 4:46Speaker 1: Nation out picks up. Oh that is awesome, Well they
- 4:56Speaker 1: got a couple of one. I like the direction the
- 4:58Speaker 1: coach has it headed an they got a couple of
- 5:00Speaker 1: good young guys there. Um, they're gonna have to combat
- 5:03Speaker 1: the whole N I L thing because I don't know
- 5:04Speaker 1: that yous are gonna be able to raise money to
- 5:06Speaker 1: compete with any of these schools. So it might turn
- 5:08Speaker 1: into a little bit of you know, a good player
- 5:10Speaker 1: comes in and plays well, it leaves. But um, but
- 5:13Speaker 1: doesn't mean they're not viable. I have so many questions.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I know Simon has so many questions because of your
- 5:19Speaker 1: position as a QB guru, right and you have worked
- 5:23Speaker 1: with so many of these guys and seeing how these
- 5:25Speaker 1: guys develop over the years. But I want to go
- 5:29Speaker 1: right off the bat like Simon and I did this
- 5:31Speaker 1: exercise I think it was in April where we ranked
- 5:38Speaker 1: our top ten qbs to bet On And it wasn't
- 5:44Speaker 1: necessarily based on stats. It wasn't based on sort of
- 5:48Speaker 1: the the record of a player. It was based on
- 5:53Speaker 1: what we see in the final moments of a game
- 5:57Speaker 1: when we're trying to make a decision. We did this
- 5:59Speaker 1: with Colin Cowher also, he was on the show talking
- 6:01Speaker 1: about it. So for me, I thought about it from
- 6:04Speaker 1: the respective perspective of who I do not want to
- 6:09Speaker 1: be betting against in the fourth quarter, Simmons was who
- 6:13Speaker 1: can bounce back from a brutal pick six the best,
- 6:18Speaker 1: and Coward was emotional discipline on and off the field.
- 6:23Speaker 1: So I'll put you on the spot right now. If
- 6:26Speaker 1: you're thinking about a quarterback from a betting point of view,
- 6:31Speaker 1: what is the characteristic that you would like to see
- 6:35Speaker 1: most as a better Well, I just think in betting
- 6:39Speaker 1: in general, right, if I could, if I could predict
- 6:41Speaker 1: the outcome of the game, I'd win money every time
- 6:43Speaker 1: I place a bet. Right, So if you back off
- 6:46Speaker 1: of being able to predict things, okay, we wouldn't be
- 6:49Speaker 1: on here if you guys could literally predict what's going
- 6:52Speaker 1: to happen. But you back out of being fully predictive. Um,
- 6:56Speaker 1: and like, what's the level right before that? And I
- 6:59Speaker 1: just think that that it's somebody who's life and and
- 7:02Speaker 1: that's honestly, if if Colins said that, I'd be shocked
- 7:06Speaker 1: if our conversations hadn't somehow formed around that, because I've
- 7:10Speaker 1: always talked about how you live your life on the
- 7:12Speaker 1: field and how you live your life off the field
- 7:13Speaker 1: directly mirror each other. With with you know, notable quarterbacks
- 7:18Speaker 1: and then I've had that conversation with him, And so
- 7:20Speaker 1: for me, I look at like, who is who's the
- 7:23Speaker 1: same all the time? Who's who's the most predictable person
- 7:27Speaker 1: on and off the field, And because there's really talented
- 7:30Speaker 1: guys who are all over the map, right, don't why
- 7:33Speaker 1: did they throw that one, whether it was a touchdown
- 7:35Speaker 1: or a pick? Right, like, where'd you? How did you
- 7:36Speaker 1: see that? And why did you throw that? And you know,
- 7:39Speaker 1: why did you miss the meeting that we had the
- 7:41Speaker 1: other day? And they would bought that car out of nowhere?
- 7:44Speaker 1: Like and again I'm a little more behind the scenes
- 7:46Speaker 1: and than the casual fan. But when I I mean,
- 7:50Speaker 1: I I don't. I learned something a long time ago.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I was playing with some some receivers that you can
- 7:54Speaker 1: classify as deeva receivers, and a coach on the team.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I threw a pick one time because it was on them,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and the coach said, really really important lesson, don't trust
- 8:01Speaker 1: untrusted with the people. And it was like, oh, very simple.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And so when I think about it, whether it's betting,
- 8:08Speaker 1: whether it's evaluating talent, like who can I assume is
- 8:12Speaker 1: going to be doing this? When I assume that he's
- 8:15Speaker 1: going to be doing that, And so I think, actually
- 8:17Speaker 1: it's a combination all three of your answers. It's somebody
- 8:19Speaker 1: who's proven, whether it's the pick six analogy, somebody who's
- 8:22Speaker 1: proven the didversity, they're unemotional about adversity right. And then
- 8:26Speaker 1: and if you're starting in the NFL, there's plenty of
- 8:28Speaker 1: different examples we can look at whether you were or
- 8:30Speaker 1: were not um. And then when it's somebody who's just
- 8:34Speaker 1: the same all the time, like Russell Wilson, I don't
- 8:37Speaker 1: know that i'd be best friends with him if we
- 8:39Speaker 1: live next door to each other, but I can kind
- 8:41Speaker 1: of tell you within pretty much certainty, like what he's
- 8:45Speaker 1: doing this week, you know what I mean, I kind
- 8:48Speaker 1: of know what he's gonna do. I kind of know
- 8:50Speaker 1: how he's gonna handle being down at the end of
- 8:52Speaker 1: the game. I kind of know how he's going to
- 8:53Speaker 1: protect the lead up ten right, seven and a half
- 8:57Speaker 1: point like six and alf point line whatever. So I
- 8:58Speaker 1: just think I look at who's as predictable as possible,
- 9:01Speaker 1: and I to find that, you gotta look at who
- 9:04Speaker 1: they are on the field and off the field. I'm
- 9:07Speaker 1: so glad you said that I'm so glad you said that,
- 9:10Speaker 1: because the biggest discrepancy that Simon and I had in
- 9:15Speaker 1: our top tens um was Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I had Russell Wilson ranked five, I had Rogers ranked eight,
- 9:28Speaker 1: Simon had Wilson eight, and Rogers ranked third. And my
- 9:34Speaker 1: interpretation of what you just said fits having Wilson ranked higher. Yeah,
- 9:44Speaker 1: I think Aaron, if you look at it off the field,
- 9:47Speaker 1: I mean, is he going to show up this thing?
- 9:49Speaker 1: Is he not? And I mean you can get tattoos
- 9:51Speaker 1: if you want. It's all good, but like that poof
- 9:53Speaker 1: out of nowhere, the love life, so it's just a
- 9:56Speaker 1: lot of you know, uncertainty, sir funding him. The only
- 10:00Speaker 1: consistency has really been the uniform UM from the start.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Everything else has been a little different UM and Russ
- 10:07Speaker 1: has a new uniform too, But his routine is the same,
- 10:10Speaker 1: his approach is the same, his team around him is
- 10:13Speaker 1: the same. I mean this, dude, I mean, I've heard
- 10:15Speaker 1: all sorts of numbers, but I've heard around a million
- 10:17Speaker 1: bucks of years. But he's invests on his body, his team,
- 10:20Speaker 1: his full time chef, his full time every that just
- 10:24Speaker 1: matters to me. I don't know if it matters to fans,
- 10:26Speaker 1: I don't know if it matters the defenders. But when
- 10:28Speaker 1: every single day is the same, when March is always
- 10:31Speaker 1: the same, in June is always the same, um, I
- 10:34Speaker 1: just think you get similar results. And Russell just had
- 10:37Speaker 1: his first bad year, you know, through it for through
- 10:40Speaker 1: his first eight seasons, nobody won more games, um and uh.
- 10:44Speaker 1: And also the lowest paid offensive line in the NFL
- 10:46Speaker 1: and maybe an NFL history in the last two years
- 10:48Speaker 1: really against the cap where it's right now. So he's
- 10:50Speaker 1: just overcomes so much and he's just kind of always
- 10:52Speaker 1: the same thing. UM. I actually think Russ's best ball
- 10:56Speaker 1: is ahead of him because he's never had control of
- 11:00Speaker 1: the steering wheel or the puppet strings, and I think
- 11:03Speaker 1: he has that right now. And so if you're give
- 11:06Speaker 1: him all that money, why not let like this version
- 11:10Speaker 1: of Russell Wilson go and then pull it back if
- 11:13Speaker 1: you have to. But he always had a head coach
- 11:16Speaker 1: GM who were way more established before he got there.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I never had that, So with him, I think gets
- 11:21Speaker 1: his best ball ahead of him. And with Aaron, I
- 11:22Speaker 1: think this is his worst roster he's had around him offensively,
- 11:26Speaker 1: and that division is getting better. And then all I
- 11:29Speaker 1: heard was that say, it's it's crazy. A guy who
- 11:33Speaker 1: just won back to back m v P s is
- 11:34Speaker 1: just left for debt. That's why I just love. I
- 11:36Speaker 1: love this life we lived cheat It's the best I know.
- 11:38Speaker 1: It's awesome. I mean, he's thirty seven and thirty eight,
- 11:42Speaker 1: and I mean, so his best ball is not behind him.
- 11:46Speaker 1: If it's behind him, it's behind him the last two years,
- 11:48Speaker 1: not like back in you know. Um but and I'm
- 11:53Speaker 1: a huge Aaron Rodgers fan. I think his best is
- 11:55Speaker 1: as good as anybody that's ever played the game. Um
- 11:57Speaker 1: and so. But in answering your question, I think in
- 12:01Speaker 1: terms of predicting these things, that's why I like all
- 12:03Speaker 1: of a sudden, Like, man, Aaron played bad in the
- 12:05Speaker 1: what was the NFC Championship or whatever. You know what,
- 12:08Speaker 1: it's like you caught off guard when he is a
- 12:09Speaker 1: bad game, like mahomes an FC Championship second half. You
- 12:13Speaker 1: like what is happening right now because we're just used
- 12:16Speaker 1: to seeing a really consistent level of play out of
- 12:18Speaker 1: the best ones, and even the m v P and
- 12:21Speaker 1: top three, top four player or whatever in the league.
- 12:23Speaker 1: In my homes are like are capable of having about
- 12:26Speaker 1: half or about game in my old Basically, the whole
- 12:29Speaker 1: point of that little extras was just a t S,
- 12:31Speaker 1: Like who's the best quarterback? We trust a T S.
- 12:34Speaker 1: So that's why I was given Chad a hard time
- 12:36Speaker 1: just because Rogers. I know what I'm getting. I bet
- 12:39Speaker 1: him all regular season, he covers all regular season, and
- 12:42Speaker 1: then I fade him at home in the playoffs and
- 12:44Speaker 1: every time Rogers chokes at home. So that's why I
- 12:46Speaker 1: get what you guys are doing with it. Chad trying
- 12:49Speaker 1: to trick. You. Don't let him trick. You had Rogers
- 12:52Speaker 1: top five, he didn't have him. And I've been giving
- 12:54Speaker 1: him shit about it because I think he's taking the
- 12:56Speaker 1: vaccine thing too far. Don't hate him because he's a liar.
- 12:59Speaker 1: I think about on field chat on field Rodgers. It's
- 13:03Speaker 1: all part of it sign and it all speaks to
- 13:05Speaker 1: what Jordan is talking about it. It speaks to emotional consistency.
- 13:10Speaker 1: But he's got back to back m vps like he's
- 13:12Speaker 1: doing it on the field. That's just that's my thing.
- 13:14Speaker 1: It's like, Yeah, if he was Johnny Johnny football over here,
- 13:18Speaker 1: I'd like, Yeah, Rogers got some ship going on lately
- 13:20Speaker 1: getting this tattoo and changing new girlfriends every rather week.
- 13:23Speaker 1: But it seems like he's just a wild dude. You
- 13:25Speaker 1: can keep his ship together on the field. Yeah, I
- 13:28Speaker 1: think football has always made sense to him. I think
- 13:30Speaker 1: that's that's home for him, you know, those lights on
- 13:34Speaker 1: the bigger the moment. I just I just don't think
- 13:37Speaker 1: Davante Adams is an interchangeable piece. But Jordan, I was
- 13:42Speaker 1: thinking like, who was the first person to hit you
- 13:45Speaker 1: up to become a QB coach? Is that something you
- 13:48Speaker 1: always know you wanted to do? Or do you just
- 13:49Speaker 1: like kind of thing where I was like, you know
- 13:52Speaker 1: my kids? You know my kids is the number one
- 13:54Speaker 1: recruit come out of high school. I know you from
- 13:57Speaker 1: playing with you back to day. I reach out to
- 13:58Speaker 1: you like, hey, if you come working like Gid, here's
- 14:00Speaker 1: something California and you were like, holy sh it, I
- 14:02Speaker 1: kind of like doing this. This is uh, this is
- 14:04Speaker 1: a cool gig improving these kids dreams. No, if I
- 14:08Speaker 1: mean for me, it actually started when I was really little.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Have you guys have read the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell,
- 14:13Speaker 1: pretty book, So I feel like I'm a chapter out
- 14:16Speaker 1: there because a couple of things happened that had nothing
- 14:18Speaker 1: to do with me. Um One, I did not choose
- 14:20Speaker 1: for my brother to be Carson Palmer. Now, fans and
- 14:23Speaker 1: betters may have opinions around who Carson Palmer is, but
- 14:26Speaker 1: I've worked with a couple of number one picks, probably
- 14:29Speaker 1: twenty five first rounders, half the starters in the league,
- 14:32Speaker 1: one way or another, I kind of know everybody. Um,
- 14:36Speaker 1: he's the best example of how to do it removed
- 14:39Speaker 1: by us. I mean the people, the way he treated
- 14:41Speaker 1: the dudes in the locker room, the work work ethic,
- 14:43Speaker 1: and the way he rehabbed his knee. The talent like
- 14:47Speaker 1: they were gonna start Lanyard his senior year, they were
- 14:49Speaker 1: gonna give him one or two games to go, and
- 14:52Speaker 1: his response was high trophy, number one pick, like the
- 14:54Speaker 1: way he bounced back and not No, got very limited
- 14:58Speaker 1: credit for what he actually did. So I can just
- 15:00Speaker 1: go on and on. So one that dudes four and
- 15:02Speaker 1: a half years older than me. So that was the
- 15:04Speaker 1: example that I had. Okay, So one that happened to
- 15:08Speaker 1: my high school coach, Bob Johnson. Rob Johnson, his father
- 15:13Speaker 1: UM trained Carson starting when Carson was in seventh grade.
- 15:16Speaker 1: So I was sitting on my football watching him in
- 15:18Speaker 1: third grade. Right, and this is like the first guy
- 15:20Speaker 1: to like charge money for private quarterback lessons, Like did
- 15:23Speaker 1: that wasn't a wasn't an industry. This is like mid
- 15:26Speaker 1: early nineties. And so Bob Johnson then created with a
- 15:30Speaker 1: few other folks, Andy Bark and Student Sports created a
- 15:33Speaker 1: Lead eleven, which Lead eleven is like, I think like
- 15:36Speaker 1: pent of the quarterbacks on NFL rosters last year went
- 15:38Speaker 1: through a Lead eleven. There's like a bunch of crazy stats.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I don't remember him, but Lead eleven has been on
- 15:43Speaker 1: twenty five years. My dad read about that in the
- 15:46Speaker 1: magazine and dropped me off as a sixth grader, Drew
- 15:49Speaker 1: Brees was going into his junior year. Derrett David Carr
- 15:52Speaker 1: was going into his sophomore year, right, So, and I
- 15:55Speaker 1: haven't missed one since. So I was a college counselor
- 15:58Speaker 1: at Utah when little Maddie Stafford and Timmy Tebow were
- 16:01Speaker 1: the high school kids. So I've really actually seen everybody
- 16:05Speaker 1: go through this. And again I didn't pick that. So
- 16:08Speaker 1: there's really two things where I've I've grown up. I
- 16:10Speaker 1: think around quarterback training. I just i'd love to have
- 16:13Speaker 1: a discussion with whoever thinks number two is UM or
- 16:17Speaker 1: whoever thinks of the number one is because I'd love
- 16:19Speaker 1: to not to compare, but like, I just haven't met
- 16:21Speaker 1: anybody who's been around it like me. And even Eli Manning,
- 16:26Speaker 1: the younger brother of Peyton, doesn't know what it's like
- 16:28Speaker 1: to be six round pick cut right away, started an
- 16:32Speaker 1: arena deal, bounce around like you know what I mean.
- 16:34Speaker 1: He kind of lives same life spadon UM. And so
- 16:36Speaker 1: it's super unique to get both sides of the perspective
- 16:39Speaker 1: of I know what it's like to win a high
- 16:40Speaker 1: school be the number one pick. When Carson retired, he
- 16:42Speaker 1: was the highest paid player in NFL history. You can
- 16:45Speaker 1: say what you wanted about his career, but were pretty good.
- 16:47Speaker 1: And then mine to bounce around and hang on and whatever,
- 16:50Speaker 1: and so I've got this unique perspective. So I had
- 16:53Speaker 1: always been around it. I'd always been working with guys
- 16:56Speaker 1: UM and then Uh, Trevor Moad who's one of my
- 16:59Speaker 1: best he's passed away last year. Uh he's a performance psychologist.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Uh he's the sports psychologist's been working with Russell Wilson
- 17:06Speaker 1: for the last ten years. UM. He wrote a book
- 17:08Speaker 1: called it it takes what it Takes and another one
- 17:11Speaker 1: called getting Too Neutral. And so at the time, Trevor
- 17:15Speaker 1: was running Exos, which was like the predominant place for
- 17:19Speaker 1: guys to train for the draft, and he said, I
- 17:21Speaker 1: was playing for the Bears at the time, and he said, uh,
- 17:24Speaker 1: Trent Dilfer. A couple of people told me that you
- 17:26Speaker 1: know you're you're the guy who wanna we wanna have
- 17:28Speaker 1: you come in and do draft training. And I was,
- 17:31Speaker 1: I didn't. I didn't. I didn't even really remember what
- 17:32Speaker 1: draft training was because they just did it with my
- 17:34Speaker 1: high school coach, with Bob Johnson. I don't know. I
- 17:36Speaker 1: don't know what everyb else was doing. And so, um,
- 17:39Speaker 1: they give me a little bit of money, let me
- 17:41Speaker 1: eat there for free, train for free, which is expensive.
- 17:45Speaker 1: When you're in the NFL. You don't watch college football
- 17:46Speaker 1: because you're busy. The last thing I'm doing watching some
- 17:48Speaker 1: random college game, uh in season. And so I had
- 17:51Speaker 1: no idea who Blake Bortles was. Um U CF like
- 17:55Speaker 1: they have a quarterback? He was good, right, And and
- 17:58Speaker 1: so they said this kid coming in today to meet
- 18:01Speaker 1: with you, and I said, listen, I don't know a
- 18:02Speaker 1: whole lot about the draft. The running people are great,
- 18:05Speaker 1: the lifting people are great, all that stuff. I just
- 18:07Speaker 1: know what you're probably gonna need to know. So once
- 18:09Speaker 1: I figure out what you know already, I'll teach you
- 18:11Speaker 1: the rest of it. And we became boys. He went
- 18:13Speaker 1: third overall nobody. We didn't see it coming, and I
- 18:17Speaker 1: was in the green room in New York with him
- 18:18Speaker 1: for the second time I've been. There's a little brother,
- 18:21Speaker 1: and I'm like, this ship is awesome. I want to
- 18:24Speaker 1: do this. And so it's really just been like a
- 18:26Speaker 1: Q one January February March commitment, which is now turned
- 18:30Speaker 1: into a real thing. This year, I think I'll have
- 18:32Speaker 1: ten receivers and past the past catchers because I'll take receivers,
- 18:36Speaker 1: running back, some tight ends, and four to six quarterbacks.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And um, I don't I'm not competing against other people
- 18:41Speaker 1: that do what I do. I don't know how you
- 18:42Speaker 1: score it and how to win. I'm not trying to
- 18:44Speaker 1: be number one. Um. I'm just in the service industry,
- 18:47Speaker 1: and I figure out a way to really serve these guys.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Sometimes it's helping them physically, sometimes it's on the mental
- 18:52Speaker 1: side more and honestly, sometimes it's on the emotional side.
- 18:54Speaker 1: More of these kids need to grow up. I need
- 18:56Speaker 1: to maybe they There's been times when I've been the first,
- 18:59Speaker 1: like real may and to say something to like that
- 19:01Speaker 1: to them in their life. Um, and so whatever the
- 19:05Speaker 1: rollings up being, I've been able to build an amazing
- 19:08Speaker 1: team around me and can really serve these kids where
- 19:10Speaker 1: they're are. I love how you talk about your brother, uh,
- 19:16Speaker 1: because so often that kind of relationship can become so
- 19:21Speaker 1: poisonous because there is jealousy involved. And the way I've
- 19:26Speaker 1: seen you talk about over the years has just been
- 19:29Speaker 1: You've never gotten that sense at all. Your brother also has.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I was editor in chief of ESPN the magazine for
- 19:36Speaker 1: years before leaving to launch Action, and we had a
- 19:40Speaker 1: writer at ESPN named David Fleming who did a lot
- 19:42Speaker 1: of stories with your brother, a lot of feature stories
- 19:44Speaker 1: in the magazine over the years, and he had Carson
- 19:48Speaker 1: had one of my favorite quotes we ever had in
- 19:49Speaker 1: the magazine. He was so accurate with his ball and
- 19:53Speaker 1: knew he was so accurate that when he was working
- 19:56Speaker 1: with the receiver it might have been Ocho Sinko. Ocho
- 20:00Speaker 1: Sanko said he was going to be running a certain pattern,
- 20:03Speaker 1: and your brother asked him, which nipple do you want
- 20:07Speaker 1: the ball on? Like that's how pinpoint accurate he could be.
- 20:13Speaker 1: That's Mac Jones right now, he's a which nipple quarterback.
- 20:18Speaker 1: And that was the first time I've ever seen and
- 20:19Speaker 1: now it's happening more. I'm sure it was happening in
- 20:21Speaker 1: other places too. But you go weeks practicing games without
- 20:25Speaker 1: missing weeks weeks. I mean, I'm going like eight throws
- 20:29Speaker 1: in a row without missing ten throws in a row.
- 20:32Speaker 1: It's gonna go weeks, um, And I just so it
- 20:35Speaker 1: was funny. The reason I've never had a new jealousy
- 20:38Speaker 1: and can can honestly say that is um with him.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I didn't know I could growing up playing catch. I
- 20:46Speaker 1: just thought that's what everyone's older brother through it, like right.
- 20:49Speaker 1: So it actually messed with my confidence because it was
- 20:51Speaker 1: such a gap could I which one I could do it?
- 20:54Speaker 1: Between what I could do and he could do And
- 20:56Speaker 1: I just assumed what he was doing was normal. And
- 20:59Speaker 1: so it wasn't until and he was a top recruit
- 21:01Speaker 1: in the country and all that stuff, But it wasn't
- 21:02Speaker 1: really until I got to like high school and I'd
- 21:05Speaker 1: go throw with the sc guys and the other three
- 21:08Speaker 1: quarterbacks would show up no disrespect to John Fox, uh,
- 21:12Speaker 1: Mike vn rap Horst or some of these other guys um,
- 21:16Speaker 1: and I go, oh, he's like twice as good as
- 21:20Speaker 1: the guys on his team. And then all of a sudden,
- 21:22Speaker 1: somebody else would show up, like uh uh, somebody from
- 21:25Speaker 1: you say, like Ky McNown or somebody who show up
- 21:27Speaker 1: to workout, and I go, oh, he's like twice as
- 21:30Speaker 1: good as everybody else. And I didn't. I didn't have
- 21:33Speaker 1: context for it. You know, I threw with him, and
- 21:35Speaker 1: I threw with my high school guys or whatever. And
- 21:36Speaker 1: then my Bob Johnson would have these workouts and you'd
- 21:38Speaker 1: get these other quarterbacks and from colleges who came in
- 21:41Speaker 1: to work with Bob Johnson, and it was like, oh,
- 21:43Speaker 1: he's four times better than Cody Pickett from Washington, Okay,
- 21:47Speaker 1: and that guy's or Marcus Toyosa Soka, Okay, that makes
- 21:50Speaker 1: more sense now. So I didn't really have context for it.
- 21:53Speaker 1: And then by the time I did, I was just
- 21:55Speaker 1: so proud of over all the stuff you'd overcome, and
- 21:57Speaker 1: what he was doing was legitimately such a big fan
- 22:00Speaker 1: um that that just jealousy never came into the mix.
- 22:03Speaker 1: I've been jealous of plenty of other people, but just
- 22:05Speaker 1: never him. And uh And also once I found out
- 22:09Speaker 1: that like that's what he was born to do and
- 22:11Speaker 1: I was actually like born to do other things, then
- 22:13Speaker 1: I got really comfortable with that gap and our relationship.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I mean, I'm in Lake Tahoe room lake all day yesterday.
- 22:19Speaker 1: A relationship has been incredible, and now I trained his
- 22:22Speaker 1: thirteen year old flat She's gonna might be a real one. Um.
- 22:28Speaker 1: How much of a QB success is being drafted into
- 22:33Speaker 1: the right situation? I asked that he, because you see
- 22:38Speaker 1: it all the time, be specifically. I think about the Bears.
- 22:40Speaker 1: We've talked about Mitch Rubinsky, and like in retrospect, if
- 22:44Speaker 1: he's not with the Bears at that time, is he
- 22:46Speaker 1: a different player? Um? So, how much of that makes
- 22:50Speaker 1: the quarterback? I actually think it's everything, because if you
- 22:55Speaker 1: want to figure out if he's a real one or not, right,
- 22:58Speaker 1: because if you put a really good quarterback in a
- 23:01Speaker 1: terrible situation, I still don't know, right. So let's let's
- 23:06Speaker 1: let's sw some names out here. Okay, So in full transparency,
- 23:09Speaker 1: I know all these guys, but I spend but I
- 23:12Speaker 1: really it's hard for me to really remove by us.
- 23:15Speaker 1: So even if you if even if you go George's
- 23:17Speaker 1: biased towards Sam Donald, because I've known him since he
- 23:19Speaker 1: was fourteen, there's still some facts here, okay, Like I
- 23:24Speaker 1: don't know about Sam, I still believe he's a great
- 23:28Speaker 1: and if it's not a starter, like a high level
- 23:30Speaker 1: starter in this league, because if you look at the
- 23:32Speaker 1: entry point in his situation, so he goes to New York, right,
- 23:37Speaker 1: there's Josh McCown. But that's that's about it. It's the
- 23:40Speaker 1: staff on their last you know, the GM of the
- 23:42Speaker 1: head coaching on their way out case and the new
- 23:43Speaker 1: staff comes in, and I couldn't think of a worse
- 23:47Speaker 1: set up. Adam Gates the offensity runs the way that
- 23:50Speaker 1: he doesn't. I'm not saying a worse person. I'm just
- 23:52Speaker 1: I don't even know Adam Gains. I'm just saying how
- 23:55Speaker 1: he's had success with quarterbacks versus um what am I
- 24:00Speaker 1: think needs to be able to succeed, Like those are opposites. Okay,
- 24:04Speaker 1: So however that played out, like we're gonna win with
- 24:07Speaker 1: confusion pre snap and have all these different things. I
- 24:09Speaker 1: don't know enough. That's the way right, plus the personnel
- 24:12Speaker 1: in those teams, okay, like the wide receiver room. I mean,
- 24:16Speaker 1: it's it's as bad as it gets. Okay. So then
- 24:19Speaker 1: you go to Carolina last year and go, okay, cool,
- 24:22Speaker 1: fresh start, and they start off three and oh and
- 24:24Speaker 1: McCaffrey goes down. They fired the o C week five,
- 24:29Speaker 1: and then at that point when they benched Sam last year,
- 24:32Speaker 1: they were on a pace to shatter the NFL record
- 24:35Speaker 1: for drop passes. No one talked about that. They were
- 24:38Speaker 1: Robbie rob DJ was number one. Robbie Anderson was number one.
- 24:41Speaker 1: DJ was like number four, and Chuba Hubbard was like
- 24:44Speaker 1: number one non receivers and drops right, So you just
- 24:47Speaker 1: go like boom boom, boom boom, like at one after
- 24:49Speaker 1: another for another in this situation and actually in the
- 24:51Speaker 1: game when Sam donnad got benched, they were down eleven
- 24:55Speaker 1: at New York, they're down eleven, and there's like a
- 24:57Speaker 1: handful of minutes Like the week before they were down eleven.
- 25:01Speaker 1: He drove ninety yards versus Minnesota. DJ drops a touchdown,
- 25:05Speaker 1: they kick a field goal, drives ninety yards, has three
- 25:08Speaker 1: fourth down conversions on that play and the scene that
- 25:10Speaker 1: he threw to the middle of the trimble was one
- 25:12Speaker 1: of the top five throws of the year in my opinion. Okay,
- 25:14Speaker 1: scores startingly on ghost for two gets, it goes over time,
- 25:17Speaker 1: Minnesota drives on the field sports to the wins the game,
- 25:19Speaker 1: and the next week they're down to eleven and they
- 25:21Speaker 1: pulled him same setup. Dude, you know what he's so like.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I look at a guy like Sam Donold and I go,
- 25:30Speaker 1: I mean, put him in any of these others, you
- 25:33Speaker 1: know what I mean? Like, put him in a situation
- 25:35Speaker 1: where they build it around him. I think he's on
- 25:38Speaker 1: his second deal, right, and then there's guys that go
- 25:41Speaker 1: to the perfect spot like Mahomes. They built it right
- 25:43Speaker 1: around him right away, Josh. What Brandon Bean and co
- 25:46Speaker 1: did around Josh Allen and Buffalo and by the way,
- 25:49Speaker 1: not right away. Kelvin Benjamin was Josh Allen's number one
- 25:52Speaker 1: target his rookie year. They were not good. Brandon Bean
- 25:56Speaker 1: did not take over an awesome franchise that was on
- 25:58Speaker 1: the way up. They built it. But the balls to
- 26:02Speaker 1: go and take Josh and go about that process the
- 26:05Speaker 1: way they did, and then to build it around him
- 26:06Speaker 1: and go get Mitch Morrise, the center who was with
- 26:08Speaker 1: Mahomes and then go get these pieces. And we can
- 26:11Speaker 1: talk about trading for stuff on digs, but that was
- 26:14Speaker 1: that was just an example of a belief system. They
- 26:16Speaker 1: had to build it around the quarterback to go get
- 26:18Speaker 1: stuff do right. And so I just look at I
- 26:22Speaker 1: look at guys like, if you take this quarterback who
- 26:24Speaker 1: succeeded and you put him in this bad situation, is
- 26:27Speaker 1: he picking up his option? And then you put this
- 26:29Speaker 1: quarterback who everyone thinks it's a bust and you put
- 26:31Speaker 1: him in a great situation, and it's like did he
- 26:33Speaker 1: get paid two years ago? And I just don't know.
- 26:36Speaker 1: And so we know we can trust sir I when
- 26:38Speaker 1: we see Patrick Mahomes, a great player, go to a
- 26:40Speaker 1: great organization that builds around him. Whof, we know what
- 26:43Speaker 1: that looks like. We're not confused by it. But where
- 26:45Speaker 1: people get confused is when a quarterback who's really good
- 26:48Speaker 1: goes and really struggles in a bad situation and we
- 26:51Speaker 1: automatically assume that that's that player. So my last thing
- 26:54Speaker 1: I'll say is overwhelmingly completely opposite sides of the spectrum. Here,
- 26:59Speaker 1: teams with on developing the quarterback way more than that
- 27:03Speaker 1: quarterback is just a bust, and it's not even close.
- 27:06Speaker 1: In my opinion, this baseball season turned cas into cash
- 27:11Speaker 1: and big hits into big wins. With Fan Duel sports Book,

- 28:58Speaker 1: up there. This is a gambling show at its core,
- 29:00Speaker 1: And to me, I'm always looking for edges. I'm looking
- 29:03Speaker 1: for long shots. And me and Chat on the show,
- 29:05Speaker 1: I talked many times about the second third year quarterback.
- 29:08Speaker 1: That is the biggest edge a better will get in football.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Mahomes MVP or fifty two one opened the season, Lamar
- 29:15Speaker 1: MVP season against second year one. We saw last year
- 29:20Speaker 1: huge leap for Joe Burrow took a hundred fifty two
- 29:22Speaker 1: one team to the Super Bowl. This year, my team
- 29:25Speaker 1: is the Jaguars. Simple fact, Trevor Lawrence. I have a
- 29:29Speaker 1: guy everyone's out on Trevor Lawrence after just one year,
- 29:32Speaker 1: the number one pick, just because he had such a
- 29:34Speaker 1: bad coaching last year. They're sitting at A one to
- 29:38Speaker 1: win the NFL Championship. He's at S one to get
- 29:41Speaker 1: m v P. Trevor Lawrence, Am I not? I'm I'm
- 29:44Speaker 1: I'm in the right line of thinking here, right thinking
- 29:46Speaker 1: Doug Peterson whole new offensive scheme. Would you back this
- 29:49Speaker 1: kind of view with Trevor Lawrence where you can see
- 29:51Speaker 1: him taking a huge leap year two just the right
- 29:54Speaker 1: coaching and the right scheme built around him because the
- 29:56Speaker 1: town's there. I mean, I don't know that a rookie
- 30:01Speaker 1: has dealt with more, you know, than he dealt with
- 30:04Speaker 1: because we've all heard the stories. But you know how
- 30:06Speaker 1: it is. That's what stuff it actually happened, you know
- 30:11Speaker 1: what I mean. I'm not even coming from an insider.
- 30:13Speaker 1: I'm just saying that's just how the league works. So um,
- 30:16Speaker 1: very few people have dealt with more and on top
- 30:18Speaker 1: of that, dealt with more negative negativity off of the
- 30:24Speaker 1: amount of positivities dealt with. This guy's never really lost.
- 30:26Speaker 1: He played for a high school coach that he loved
- 30:28Speaker 1: and respected. He played for Davos Money, who he loved
- 30:31Speaker 1: and respected. He stepped into a winning culture in high school,
- 30:34Speaker 1: he stepped into a winning culture in college, and he
- 30:36Speaker 1: added to that winning culture. And then he went to
- 30:38Speaker 1: an absolute duster fire. And so it's not just how
- 30:43Speaker 1: bad the situation was, it's the lack of experience that
- 30:46Speaker 1: he had dealing with a bad situation, Like Trevor, how
- 30:50Speaker 1: do you deal with a coach that you don't trust?
- 30:51Speaker 1: I don't know, never done it right. So like when
- 30:55Speaker 1: you look at it from that perspective, he had to
- 30:57Speaker 1: overcome the most. I was impressed with how he played.
- 31:01Speaker 1: I mean, again, I've coached the guy or whatever. I'm
- 31:03Speaker 1: impressed with how he's played because what he's managed, the
- 31:07Speaker 1: talent around him, Um, that team, you know, and I
- 31:11Speaker 1: just I thought it was impressive, and I think they're
- 31:13Speaker 1: They're definitely poised to turn this thing down around a
- 31:17Speaker 1: lot quicker than people think. Now. That roster is not
- 31:19Speaker 1: necessarily where the Chiefs were his second year, and that
- 31:21Speaker 1: roster is not where the the Ravens were in Lamar's
- 31:24Speaker 1: second year. Um, but this roster is not where it
- 31:27Speaker 1: was last year either. And I think Christian Kirk people
- 31:30Speaker 1: can do and awe about the money and say what
- 31:32Speaker 1: they want, but he's talked about predictable. Dude. I know,
- 31:36Speaker 1: I've known him since hig school. Was Kyle Allen, the
- 31:38Speaker 1: guy I've worked with forever as his best friend since
- 31:40Speaker 1: he was little, been around Christian since he was four
- 31:43Speaker 1: ft six, And that guy's the same thing every single day.
- 31:46Speaker 1: All he's trying to do is is get open and
- 31:48Speaker 1: the way he approaches the game. So I like that, like,
- 31:51Speaker 1: but that's the right like, that's the right guy to
- 31:53Speaker 1: pay to bring into that room as you bring in
- 31:55Speaker 1: young receivers moving forward, and they go, Okay, that's how
- 31:58Speaker 1: I'm supposed to train that son's supposed course of the game.
- 32:00Speaker 1: So between Doug tow In some of the offseason moves
- 32:03Speaker 1: that they made, UM, and you know whichever, Um, he
- 32:08Speaker 1: knows how to build it, and he knows how uh,
- 32:10Speaker 1: he knows what success looks like. I think is a
- 32:12Speaker 1: better way to say that. And so, UM, I think
- 32:14Speaker 1: they have the leadership that they need and they have
- 32:16Speaker 1: no expectations. And I think that when you put people
- 32:19Speaker 1: who have been there and done that. Dougs won a
- 32:21Speaker 1: Super Bowl, Trevor's won a national title, A couple of
- 32:23Speaker 1: other guys have wont a high level when you put
- 32:25Speaker 1: them in there with no expectations and they get to
- 32:27Speaker 1: operate in secrecy out in Jacksonville, I've played there, nobody
- 32:30Speaker 1: he's paying attention. Um, then you can turn things around
- 32:33Speaker 1: really quickly. What about a guy like Jalen Hurts. It's
- 32:38Speaker 1: another team everyone is talking about. This team is having
- 32:42Speaker 1: higher expectations. This is a year that he has to
- 32:45Speaker 1: prove it. He's been given weapons around him. Do you
- 32:49Speaker 1: look at a guy like that and say, Okay, he's
- 32:51Speaker 1: got the skill set, if he's if the right people
- 32:53Speaker 1: are around him to take the leap, Yeah, I do. UM,
- 32:57Speaker 1: But at the same time I'll say this like we're
- 32:59Speaker 1: gonna be able to come to a conclusion on Jalen
- 33:01Speaker 1: Hurts at the end of this year, You've give him this.
- 33:03Speaker 1: It's kind of like Baker last you know, you look
- 33:05Speaker 1: at Baker who's Bakers played with his whole line went
- 33:08Speaker 1: to the Pro Bowl. There's like seven out of nine
- 33:11Speaker 1: guys have gone to the Pro you know, like look
- 33:12Speaker 1: around it, you go, he's had talent around him. Jalen's
- 33:15Speaker 1: got that now right offense and defense. The secondary is
- 33:18Speaker 1: a little questionable. But for Jalen, for me, the weapons
- 33:20Speaker 1: around him, this is I don't know if it's make
- 33:23Speaker 1: or break, but we're gonna be able to come to
- 33:25Speaker 1: a consensus at the end of this season. And he's
- 33:29Speaker 1: shown that he's a playmaker. Um, and let's just I'll
- 33:32Speaker 1: talk about this for a second. The difference between putting
- 33:34Speaker 1: the ball in play and being a playmaker in high
- 33:37Speaker 1: school football, right, do the Elite leven, all these league camps,
- 33:40Speaker 1: all stuff. You can become a five star and get
- 33:43Speaker 1: offers and all that stuff off of your playmaking ability.
- 33:47Speaker 1: In college, to have success, you've got to make plays
- 33:50Speaker 1: and you also have to put the ball in play
- 33:52Speaker 1: and kind of take what they gave you. The NFL
- 33:54Speaker 1: is about putting the ball in play, and I haven't
- 33:57Speaker 1: seen Tom Brady makeup play in a decade now he
- 34:01Speaker 1: might dropping dimes is not making a play. Right, run,
- 34:05Speaker 1: jump over this guy, whip went six yards across your body.
- 34:07Speaker 1: That's making a play. Brady doesn't do it, doesn't need
- 34:09Speaker 1: to do it because he puts the ball in play
- 34:11Speaker 1: so consistently that he doesn't need to do that. And so, Mike,
- 34:15Speaker 1: my thing that I'm excited to watch on Jalen is
- 34:17Speaker 1: is he evolved? Is has he evolved into a guy
- 34:21Speaker 1: who's gonna build his game off of putting the ball
- 34:23Speaker 1: and play And you think that that's easier than making
- 34:27Speaker 1: a play, And it's not because I think quarterbacks would
- 34:30Speaker 1: they get really good at what they need to do
- 34:32Speaker 1: to survive. And if you've survived by being a playmaker, stop, start,
- 34:36Speaker 1: cut back, drop a dime in there, and make an
- 34:38Speaker 1: amazing throw. I just think if that's the foundation in
- 34:42Speaker 1: your game and you and you would, you're more likely
- 34:46Speaker 1: to make a play than just go through your progression
- 34:49Speaker 1: with timing and accuracy and consistent footwork. If that's the case,
- 34:52Speaker 1: I think you're gonna lose in the playoffs to somebody
- 34:54Speaker 1: who does. And I think that's like Lamar Jackson is
- 34:57Speaker 1: another example of that that Josh That's where he evolved.
- 35:00Speaker 1: He was a playmate. Josh An was a playmaker who
- 35:03Speaker 1: has learned Brian Dable, Ken Dorsey, all these people who
- 35:05Speaker 1: have been in the room with him. Josh has gone
- 35:07Speaker 1: from a playmaker who's learned how to put the ball
- 35:10Speaker 1: in play and make a play when he needs to.
- 35:12Speaker 1: That's where this this game is at right now. And
- 35:16Speaker 1: my question on Jalen Hurts is is can he can
- 35:19Speaker 1: He can the foundation of his game be putting the
- 35:20Speaker 1: ball in play and making plays when he needs to.
- 35:23Speaker 1: If not, then I think that we're going to continue
- 35:25Speaker 1: to We're gonna continue to question Jalen. So two guys
- 35:29Speaker 1: you mentioned making a play and putting the ball in play.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Nobody exemplifies that more then Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen.
- 35:38Speaker 1: And you said you've said in the past you've worked
- 35:40Speaker 1: with Josh Allen that he is the best athlete to
- 35:44Speaker 1: play the quarterback position. Explain that, Well, I mean, it's
- 35:49Speaker 1: not It's not like. Here's here's my personal opinion. I
- 35:52Speaker 1: just if you if you look at the strongest arms,
- 35:54Speaker 1: he's at the top of the list, or he's whatever.
- 35:56Speaker 1: I don't know. How you rank them anyways? Right, so
- 35:59Speaker 1: he's top the top couple of arms. Ever, Um, older
- 36:03Speaker 1: guys who know what they're talking about would agree, right,
- 36:05Speaker 1: And then, um, you know, I don't care about forty
- 36:08Speaker 1: times much, but he's clearly one of the best runners
- 36:12Speaker 1: in the league. There's something that nobody's talked about this
- 36:14Speaker 1: whole offseason. I gotta look up the guy's name. He
- 36:17Speaker 1: trucked a linebacker from the Chiefs. He knocked him out
- 36:20Speaker 1: of the game. And then three plays later he's running
- 36:23Speaker 1: down the sideline and Sorenson, the safety who's the hard
- 36:25Speaker 1: hitting safety from the Chiefs, turned him down on the
- 36:29Speaker 1: sideline three plays later. Nobody talks about that. Right, We've
- 36:32Speaker 1: seen him hurdle people, truck people. We've in the stuff arm.
- 36:34Speaker 1: He's cut back a million times. He's got a spin move,
- 36:36Speaker 1: he can use his blockers. He's a runner, he's a
- 36:39Speaker 1: dynamic run threat. Nobody's saying, let's just not let him
- 36:44Speaker 1: beat us with his arm. Let's make him beat us
- 36:45Speaker 1: with his legs. No, because he's gonna beat you with
- 36:47Speaker 1: his legs. So from a runner, from his from an
- 36:51Speaker 1: explosiveness standpoint, to stop the start. Uh, And he's two fifty.
- 36:55Speaker 1: He's not two oh six. And people say, well, Michael
- 36:58Speaker 1: Vicks faster. Michael Vick was six ft one ninety whatever
- 37:01Speaker 1: he was. You know what I mean, Guys, some of
- 37:03Speaker 1: these guys are little. So Josh's massive. Josh is the
- 37:06Speaker 1: biggest quarterback in the league. Probably, I'd have to you
- 37:09Speaker 1: have to like give me a name right here. Um,
- 37:11Speaker 1: but anybody who's remotely is close to the size of
- 37:13Speaker 1: him does not run like him. And so I just
- 37:16Speaker 1: look at the arm, the explosiveness and not just being fast.
- 37:19Speaker 1: There's fast guys who aren't great runners. There's guys that
- 37:21Speaker 1: aren't that fast that are great runners. Blake Portals ran
- 37:24Speaker 1: four nine at the combine. He led all NFL quarterbacks
- 37:27Speaker 1: in rushing two years in a row. Because he knows
- 37:29Speaker 1: how to run, knows when to cut back, he sees
- 37:31Speaker 1: the field. Uh. And I've been around fast guys. Another
- 37:35Speaker 1: quarterback I played with in Jacksonville, Blaine Gabbert, is super fast,
- 37:39Speaker 1: but we just never really saw him rip off sixty
- 37:42Speaker 1: yarders and so, um, I just look at Josh and
- 37:46Speaker 1: the whole pieces. I go, yeah, I mean, it's it's
- 37:49Speaker 1: an open conversation, you know, with whoever the other names
- 37:53Speaker 1: are but I I said this anti podcast, but like, but,
- 37:56Speaker 1: but you can't compare him in Cam Newton. That's what
- 37:58Speaker 1: people want to do, and I go as a er,
- 38:01Speaker 1: I don't. I don't want to sit here and beat
- 38:02Speaker 1: up on Camp. But you're you're not those those two
- 38:05Speaker 1: are the same thing. Yeah, I couldn't couldn't agree more.
- 38:08Speaker 1: I was being Chad to talk to this offseason about
- 38:10Speaker 1: who is the best quarterback in football and I got
- 38:12Speaker 1: a little heat from it for saying that was Josh Alex.
- 38:14Speaker 1: People like what has he done? And I just took
- 38:16Speaker 1: it from the standpoint of I'm just talking about the
- 38:18Speaker 1: pure position, Like this guy is the best athlete to
- 38:21Speaker 1: play the position. Like you just said, he can outrun
- 38:23Speaker 1: people and if he needs, you can run through him.
- 38:25Speaker 1: The guy he knocked down that game was actually Honey
- 38:27Speaker 1: Badger for the Chiefs, So that that's He's just a freak.
- 38:31Speaker 1: And I'm I'm looking at the business now and I'm
- 38:34Speaker 1: actually just thinking about what your view is on Derek Carr.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Like me and Chat are kind of not the biggest fanboys.
- 38:40Speaker 1: We love Derek Carring. We gave him out last year
- 38:42Speaker 1: forty tw one to lead the league in passing sounded crazy.
- 38:44Speaker 1: He almost got there. I think he finished fourth this year.
- 38:48Speaker 1: You know, be Chad didn't either of us have him
- 38:50Speaker 1: in our top ten, but we have him right outside,
- 38:52Speaker 1: Like we think there Carr is right there. Do you
- 38:54Speaker 1: think with the weapons he has this year, he's gonna
- 38:57Speaker 1: be back to the m v P. For me, he
- 38:58Speaker 1: was all those years ago with the Mari coup. For
- 39:01Speaker 1: I do, I do. I'm a big Derek Carr fan.
- 39:04Speaker 1: And this is the thing, like who has dealt which
- 39:06Speaker 1: quarterback has dealt with more bs outside of their control?
- 39:09Speaker 1: Like I'm asking me who who else has dealt with
- 39:12Speaker 1: in the last three years? More bs? Think about it
- 39:14Speaker 1: like this too. When you have a B, when you
- 39:17Speaker 1: sign a B in the offseason, right, it's not even
- 39:20Speaker 1: that you're counting on a great player or whatever. It's
- 39:23Speaker 1: that everything that you've talked about and designed is around that,
- 39:27Speaker 1: whether he's opening up this guy, whether he's gonna get it.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Like your whole philosophy of what you believe is going
- 39:33Speaker 1: to work for this year was taken away from them
- 39:35Speaker 1: in training camp in a I mean just unbelievable fashion,
- 39:40Speaker 1: burned the house down on your way out and you're
- 39:43Speaker 1: on hard knocks and all the I mean, who is, like,
- 39:47Speaker 1: that's that's your whether you whether Derek even like Davy,
- 39:50Speaker 1: doesn't matter. Like that's what you've seen the whole offense
- 39:52Speaker 1: around right like that all of your meetings have been
- 39:54Speaker 1: about this and then poof, it's gone and it's irreparable
- 39:58Speaker 1: and it's way too late to get anybod else in here.
- 40:01Speaker 1: It's freaking August, So like to deal with that and
- 40:04Speaker 1: then NonStop, now I ever out without a quarterback to
- 40:07Speaker 1: deal with this, but like the whole narrative for five
- 40:09Speaker 1: years has been one of the Raiders gonna draft their
- 40:12Speaker 1: quarterback right now. A lot of people deal with that.
- 40:14Speaker 1: So I'm not that's not specific to Derek, but um,
- 40:18Speaker 1: and then so then then you have the Grooten stuff.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Then you have the Rugs stuff. Then you have like
- 40:22Speaker 1: it's just been one thing after another and he barely
- 40:27Speaker 1: lost Joe Burrow in the playoffs, you know what I mean,
- 40:30Speaker 1: on the road and just strung it together in the
- 40:32Speaker 1: last game versus the Charger, and so I just I'm
- 40:36Speaker 1: just a fan kind of like waiting for like when's
- 40:38Speaker 1: he going to catch a break? And boys, that certainly
- 40:41Speaker 1: looked like this could be the year between Renfro being
- 40:44Speaker 1: locked up Davante coming in. So I think Derek Carr
- 40:48Speaker 1: has a breakout year. And what's crazy is the first
- 40:51Speaker 1: year that he went off and when he broke his
- 40:53Speaker 1: leg in Mexico City versus I think Houston. The stats
- 40:56Speaker 1: that season, everyone he had arrived, right, he's on a
- 40:58Speaker 1: hundred plus million dollar deal. Everyone's on the Derek car chain,
- 41:01Speaker 1: and then they were off of it. The next two
- 41:03Speaker 1: seasons he had better stats. He was better the following
- 41:06Speaker 1: two seasons, and he was the year that we were
- 41:08Speaker 1: all excited about. But it's just like that's the narrative, right,
- 41:11Speaker 1: And so maybe it's because he's kind of dorky. Maybe
- 41:13Speaker 1: it's because he wears his religion on a swinger because
- 41:16Speaker 1: on his sleeve, or maybe because he doesn't wear sleeves, right,
- 41:18Speaker 1: he's all gunned up. I don't know, but people just
- 41:20Speaker 1: find it really easy to hate on this guy. But
- 41:23Speaker 1: I'll tell you what, man, I got a lot of
- 41:24Speaker 1: friends in Raider Nation, and they there are a lot
- 41:26Speaker 1: of them. They asked me that question and I give
- 41:28Speaker 1: the answer and they go good, Because that's what I
- 41:31Speaker 1: think too. You know what, I mean, like, I think
- 41:33Speaker 1: that's like the sentiment and raider nation. Um, and boy
- 41:36Speaker 1: do I hope he has an awesome year. And and
- 41:38Speaker 1: I'll tell you what if he if this year, if
- 41:41Speaker 1: they win that division or coming second in that division
- 41:43Speaker 1: and go to the playoffs, everybody needs to shut up
- 41:46Speaker 1: coming out of that division he beat If he he
- 41:49Speaker 1: ends up first or second in that division this year,
- 41:51Speaker 1: it ain't gonna because they run game, because the defense
- 41:53Speaker 1: and they've whipped on defensive picks. I forgot about that.
- 41:55Speaker 1: They've completely botched picks. So he's you know what I mean,
- 41:59Speaker 1: like empty handed here. And so yeah, I think Derek Carr,
- 42:03Speaker 1: you know, I would put him ahead that guys like Murray.
- 42:07Speaker 1: If Murray's on your list, Um, Derek wouldn't be number three,
- 42:10Speaker 1: but he'd be on my list for sure. Yeah. There's
- 42:13Speaker 1: seven to one right now in Las Vegas to win
- 42:15Speaker 1: the a f C West, So pretty good odds there.
- 42:18Speaker 1: That a f C West is so interesting because and
- 42:23Speaker 1: I'd like to get your opinion on this, the Chiefs
- 42:27Speaker 1: let Tyree hit Tyreek Hill go in a trade. People
- 42:31Speaker 1: are still favoring the Chiefs to win the division based
- 42:34Speaker 1: on Mahomes based on Andy Reid, based on the other
- 42:38Speaker 1: weapons they have. You look at this you just mentioned,
- 42:42Speaker 1: you know, three seasons ago, Antonio Brown. That's the plan.
- 42:46Speaker 1: He disappears in training camp. When you lose a weapon
- 42:49Speaker 1: like Tyreek Hill. The Chiefs don't win that a f
- 42:51Speaker 1: C title game last year against the Bills, I mean
- 42:55Speaker 1: the a f C playoff game against the Bills without
- 42:57Speaker 1: Tyreek Hill, making the players from pat of my homes.
- 43:02Speaker 1: How much do something like that impact the team that
- 43:04Speaker 1: isn't being encounted for in these odds in the a
- 43:06Speaker 1: C West. I think it's massive. I think the two
- 43:10Speaker 1: plays in the a f C West are the Broncos
- 43:12Speaker 1: and the Raiders. I haven't The Chargers haven't proven me
- 43:15Speaker 1: that they're winners yet. And I know you you can
- 43:17Speaker 1: because we look. We look at rosters, right, Chargers might
- 43:20Speaker 1: be a top three roster, right, especially Derwin Healthy. He
- 43:24Speaker 1: hadn't even played yet, right, he might be one of
- 43:26Speaker 1: the best. I'll tell you about. NFL guys think Derwin
- 43:28Speaker 1: James is one of the best defensive players in the league.
- 43:31Speaker 1: That's the NFL players think, Right, you don't even played yet, right,
- 43:34Speaker 1: So you look at that roster. But they had that
- 43:37Speaker 1: roster last year. For the most part, they haven't really
- 43:40Speaker 1: shown I don't know. I just I don't. I haven't
- 43:44Speaker 1: seen that. I don't know how to say it, like
- 43:46Speaker 1: they're not winners because they've won a bunch of games.
- 43:47Speaker 1: But I just haven't seen that yet, right, even in
- 43:50Speaker 1: Herbert in college, I haven't seen that yet, Right that
- 43:53Speaker 1: like killer instinct win by all. I've seen that Mahomes already.
- 43:56Speaker 1: I've seen a ton out of Russell Wilson. I've seen
- 44:00Speaker 1: out of Derek Carr with a lesser roster figured out
- 44:02Speaker 1: and be there in the end. I just haven't seen
- 44:04Speaker 1: it with the Chargers. And I'm to your point, Terry
- 44:06Speaker 1: Hill is not a receiver. He's not a good receiver.
- 44:09Speaker 1: He's one of three people in the NFL who can
- 44:12Speaker 1: score from any place on the field at any time.
- 44:14Speaker 1: You don't those guys are not interchangeable, right, I just don't. Like,
- 44:19Speaker 1: in my opinion, it's it's your mar Chason and and
- 44:22Speaker 1: Alvin Kamara, and it's like, but those are aren't regular players,
- 44:26Speaker 1: right when you when I can at any point score touchdown,
- 44:29Speaker 1: and there's just I think there's only three like can
- 44:32Speaker 1: make six people miss and score touchdown, then that's not
- 44:34Speaker 1: an interchangeable piece. I know. I watched a video of
- 44:40Speaker 1: you talking about Josh Allen in which you would text
- 44:44Speaker 1: him things like, you know, congrats on being a Pro
- 44:47Speaker 1: Bowl alternate and try to goat him a little bit
- 44:52Speaker 1: because you know that's what motivate him. Motivates him. Of
- 44:55Speaker 1: the quarterbacks you've coached, who manages and resid bonds to
- 45:01Speaker 1: that kind of trash talk and feedback the best. Uh, Well,
- 45:06Speaker 1: I think it's a case by case and and I
- 45:08Speaker 1: don't know if it's more like I think I got
- 45:10Speaker 1: that got turned into here's how I motivate him, And
- 45:13Speaker 1: really it was just like here's how I talk trash
- 45:15Speaker 1: with my friend. And I know the response is going
- 45:17Speaker 1: to get um but I mean probably my brother in
- 45:22Speaker 1: that case, Um yeah, just over the years, because it's
- 45:26Speaker 1: not like a co I mean, you trained with me
- 45:29Speaker 1: for a couple of years. At the end, I wouldn't
- 45:31Speaker 1: say coach my brother, but um, but just knowing that
- 45:35Speaker 1: the right little things too, because we grew up golfing
- 45:39Speaker 1: and doing stuff, you know, and so like I kind
- 45:41Speaker 1: of knew what could get under each other's skin, but
- 45:42Speaker 1: also knew I could get the other guy going, you
- 45:45Speaker 1: know what I mean, And so I'd have to really
- 45:48Speaker 1: think about some examples, but um, but yeah, definitely my brother,
- 45:51Speaker 1: just because that that was the report. Nobody talks more
- 45:53Speaker 1: trash than my brother. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's sarcastic.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Sometimes it's like if it's a big time putt and
- 45:59Speaker 1: it's for the way, and sometimes it's really true ship
- 46:01Speaker 1: that he said, you know what I mean, I think
- 46:03Speaker 1: so he knows how knows how to um, you know,
- 46:07Speaker 1: strum those strings. Uh, and so I think I learned
- 46:09Speaker 1: it from him and giving it back to him over
- 46:11Speaker 1: the years. Uh. Quickly, before we let you go, I
- 46:15Speaker 1: want to talk about college football for a second, because
- 46:18Speaker 1: you're obviously looking at a lot of college football quarterbacks
- 46:22Speaker 1: already a lot of talk about what this class looks like.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Do you have thoughts on not who the best quarterbacks
- 46:29Speaker 1: are that we're already talking about, but who are some
- 46:31Speaker 1: of the quarterbacks that we should be thinking about as
- 46:34Speaker 1: betters running teams that maybe aren't as sort of in
- 46:38Speaker 1: the public eye, but their quarterbacks are good enough to
- 46:43Speaker 1: keep games close. Yeah. I mean, obviously there's the three
- 46:46Speaker 1: guys at the top, you know, C. J. Stroud. Look,
- 46:49Speaker 1: you're gonna bet how Sat However you battle House State.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Same thing with Bama with Bryce Kentucky is a little
- 46:55Speaker 1: different because Will Levice. I think it's gonna have a
- 46:57Speaker 1: chance to be a really high pick, maybe the top pick.
- 46:59Speaker 1: We'll see. Um but lostes O c Lost is wide out.
- 47:04Speaker 1: It's in the it's in, it's in the SEC. So
- 47:06Speaker 1: that's that's one of those, um, you know, superstar player.
- 47:09Speaker 1: We'll see how the team ends up being, uh and
- 47:12Speaker 1: how much they can carry him if it's in a
- 47:13Speaker 1: lesser conference than a great quarterback and just carry that
- 47:15Speaker 1: team all the way through in the SEC. That's not
- 47:17Speaker 1: necessarily the case. If you can't stop somebody, you can't
- 47:20Speaker 1: stop somebody kind of thing. Um. But there's a couple
- 47:23Speaker 1: of other names that I think those three you guys
- 47:25Speaker 1: will be great pros. A couple of their names that
- 47:26Speaker 1: come to mind. UM one is Cameron Rising from you Utah.
- 47:30Speaker 1: People got finally got a chance to see him play
- 47:32Speaker 1: last year versa ohiuse State and that shootout. Cam Rising
- 47:35Speaker 1: is a baller. He's a great playmaker. Um as I
- 47:38Speaker 1: talked about earlier, putting the ball in play and making
- 47:40Speaker 1: plays and uh, and I think he's really accurate with
- 47:43Speaker 1: deep balls, um, which in college football is a lot
- 47:47Speaker 1: big part of the game. Another guy is Devin Leary
- 47:51Speaker 1: from n C State North Carolina State, fifth year senior. UM,
- 47:55Speaker 1: highly recruited kid, and boys just all clicking for him.
- 47:58Speaker 1: He's got a stud wide receiver, he's got a really
- 48:00Speaker 1: good coach. UM. He can rip it as good as
- 48:03Speaker 1: anybody in the country. UM. And he's been at Manning,
- 48:07Speaker 1: and he's been at the Manning. I was out of
- 48:08Speaker 1: Manning with him, and like forty college guys, I was
- 48:10Speaker 1: at the Lead eleven with him, and a couple with
- 48:12Speaker 1: Bryce and and c J and and some of these guys.
- 48:15Speaker 1: And Uh, he can spend his good name around the country. UM.
- 48:17Speaker 1: And so that's a there's a not a long shot,
- 48:20Speaker 1: but there's a good like follow the wolf Pack here
- 48:22Speaker 1: this year. Uh. And then the third one is this
- 48:25Speaker 1: is who I love is University of Houston Clayton tune.
- 48:29Speaker 1: So Houston is kind of like Cincinnati. They've kind of
- 48:32Speaker 1: won like nine or ten games a few years in
- 48:34Speaker 1: a row. Dana Holgerson has had some really good quarterbacks,
- 48:37Speaker 1: He's had some really good receivers. UM. This might be
- 48:40Speaker 1: his best quarterback in his best receiver he's had, uh
- 48:43Speaker 1: Tank Dell, little tiny white out who's I mean just electric?
- 48:47Speaker 1: He He might be one of the best playmakers in
- 48:50Speaker 1: college football this year that nobody knows about Logan number one.
- 48:53Speaker 1: UM and so Houston is another team to watch UM
- 48:56Speaker 1: and I like, you know, when I look at it
- 48:58Speaker 1: from the betting landscape, like the school that nobody cares
- 49:02Speaker 1: about outside of that fan base that like should be
- 49:05Speaker 1: way better than people think, largely because the quarterback play,
- 49:08Speaker 1: like I said with Will Levis, sometimes no matter how
- 49:11Speaker 1: good the quarterback is when you're on an SCC team,
- 49:13Speaker 1: if you're not, if it's not close on special teams
- 49:16Speaker 1: and d line in secondary, then it can it can.
- 49:19Speaker 1: It can get ugly. But at a lower level you
- 49:22Speaker 1: can win eleven games just off a good quarterback play
- 49:24Speaker 1: actually can outscore people. UM. That's why I think of
- 49:28Speaker 1: it's Houston. UM, They're gonna pick off where Cincinnati left off.
- 49:31Speaker 1: I've worked at a dozen ras the last few years.
- 49:33Speaker 1: I just just kind of see that learned that conference better.
- 49:36Speaker 1: UM and Houston has all the writing on the wall
- 49:38Speaker 1: to have one of those teams where you go people
- 49:40Speaker 1: don't really pay attention to Houston, and all of a sudden,
- 49:42Speaker 1: you know they don't lose. So the no, they don't
- 49:44Speaker 1: lose or they don't lose until a big time Bowl game.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Jordan's I feel like the biggest takeaway from this will
- 49:50Speaker 1: probably be I was right about Russell Wilson and Simon
- 49:54Speaker 1: was wrong. So for that alone, I appreciate you uh
