- 0:14Speaker 1: much been looking forward to talking to. I can't believe
- 0:17Speaker 1: we got him. I really truly feel honored. We had
- 0:19Speaker 1: Dabby's grandpa John here, such a fan favorite, the front
- 0:24Speaker 1: runner had become the Senior Bachelor, and somebody we really
- 0:29Speaker 1: hope to see a lot of this season. Hey, Ben,
- 0:33Speaker 1: are you stoked? I'm so stoked. We asked and pulled
- 0:37Speaker 1: our listeners for questions that they had for Grandpa John. Well,
- 0:42Speaker 1: you responded in a big way. We chose ten of
- 0:45Speaker 1: them to ask him today. So ask him to questions,
- 0:48Speaker 1: talk to him about his love life, and see if
- 0:50Speaker 1: he's pumped to watch this season of the Bachelor. Let's
- 0:53Speaker 1: bring him on a Grandpa John, How you doing? I'm
- 0:57Speaker 1: doing fine? How you're doing? Who is this? This has been? Hey?
- 1:01Speaker 1: Hey John? This is Ashley. Hi Ashley, how are you doing?
- 1:05Speaker 1: We're so good and so so happy to have you.
- 1:08Speaker 1: You are such a lovable character that we've seen so
- 1:12Speaker 1: little of, but it's been all Golden Yeah. Hey, um,
- 1:16Speaker 1: all right, what's going on? Okay, we're gonna get started
- 1:19Speaker 1: right now. I have something I want to start with.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Here we go, so Grandpa John is joining us. Hey,
- 1:24Speaker 1: Grandpa John, I do want to start this by apologizing
- 1:27Speaker 1: to you. I know you have to take time away
- 1:29Speaker 1: from the card game that you're playing to join us
- 1:32Speaker 1: on the podcast today, So I'm sorry. It is my
- 1:36Speaker 1: pleasure in and the people i'm playing cards wo think
- 1:38Speaker 1: it's an So we're okay, Oh that's great. That's great. Well, hey,
- 1:44Speaker 1: we're gonna get it started here. We did pull some
- 1:46Speaker 1: questions from our listeners, actually take it away. Well, Grandpa John. First,
- 1:51Speaker 1: I want to know how it feels to be like
- 1:53Speaker 1: a semi celebrity now after just a few appearances on TV,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and like, is this your first podcast? This is this
- 2:01Speaker 1: is absolutely crazy. I I don't even know what a
- 2:04Speaker 1: podcast is, but apparently it's it's it's voice only. Since
- 2:09Speaker 1: I don't see any cameras around here to take pictures
- 2:11Speaker 1: of me. That's great. Okay, Well, before we get into
- 2:18Speaker 1: questions from our audience, I really wanted to talk about
- 2:21Speaker 1: your love story because we got a little preview of
- 2:24Speaker 1: it on story your love story with your with your wife. Yes,
- 2:31Speaker 1: so how did you guys meet? I want to know
- 2:33Speaker 1: everything about your meat story? Those are my favorite. Well.
- 2:39Speaker 1: We met U when we were going to college, and
- 2:44Speaker 1: if I had been intelligent enough to better four years
- 2:48Speaker 1: in college, I never would have met her. But since
- 2:51Speaker 1: it took me six years to work my way through college,
- 2:57Speaker 1: I managed to meet her at a UH freshman mixer
- 3:01Speaker 1: at Mount Mary College in Milwaukee. We boys from Marquette
- 3:06Speaker 1: University used to go visit all of the girls colleges
- 3:10Speaker 1: to greet the young ladies, and so that's how we met.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Went out to Mount Mary College and she was one
- 3:18Speaker 1: of the young ladies. There was it a love at
- 3:21Speaker 1: first sight thing? No, it was not loved. Love did
- 3:28Speaker 1: not occur until I UH one of the things that
- 3:36Speaker 1: that we old older guys that we would throw parties
- 3:40Speaker 1: and so ah after after meeting her in our Marquette
- 3:50Speaker 1: union cards, UH, when we decided to have a party.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Like I said, we invited girls from all of the
- 3:58Speaker 1: growth colleges, so she became kind of a point of
- 4:00Speaker 1: contact for Mount Mary College. We both got drunk and
- 4:06Speaker 1: um when the UH the party ended up making so
- 4:10Speaker 1: much noise that the landlady downstairs called the cops. So
- 4:16Speaker 1: when the uh yeah, so the pop, Yeah, it was
- 4:21Speaker 1: it was interesting that the cops came by and he said,
- 4:25Speaker 1: your landlady, whose mother is deaf, is complaining that you're
- 4:29Speaker 1: making so much noise that you can hear you. I'm
- 4:34Speaker 1: going to come back here in five minutes and I'm
- 4:38Speaker 1: going to check everybody's ID card to make sure everybody
- 4:41Speaker 1: is twenty one or older. Well, of course, with you
- 4:45Speaker 1: off on a couple of my good friends, Uh, none
- 4:49Speaker 1: of the young ladies that were with us were over
- 4:51Speaker 1: twenty one. So they all took off and went various
- 4:55Speaker 1: and sundering different places, and unbeknownst to to my future wife, uh,
- 5:02Speaker 1: she got stranded and had to walk up several miles
- 5:08Speaker 1: two uh apartment of one of the parents of one
- 5:15Speaker 1: of the guys that was at the party, and she
- 5:18Speaker 1: she and her friends from Mount Mary College kinds of Kane,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and complained about how these boys deserted them and the part.
- 5:27Speaker 1: There was a party going on somewhere else and they
- 5:29Speaker 1: couldn't get there, and they were going to be campused
- 5:32Speaker 1: at the girls college that they were attending because they
- 5:35Speaker 1: were got to wait. So one of the guys who
- 5:38Speaker 1: had a car uh ended up all the girls back
- 5:42Speaker 1: to Mount Mary College, and I happened to be in
- 5:45Speaker 1: the car with them since the party had started at
- 5:48Speaker 1: my place, and so I was sort of responsible for him.
- 5:51Speaker 1: And uh. After after they raised Kane and cussed us
- 5:55Speaker 1: up one side and down the other side, I said, well,
- 5:57Speaker 1: this is my kind of woman. I could like this.
- 5:59Speaker 1: So yeah, that's how we met. And uh. For the
- 6:03Speaker 1: next two years we dated, and then uh after her
- 6:08Speaker 1: sophomore year and I graduated from college, I joined the
- 6:11Speaker 1: Air Force, and then we had a relation, a long
- 6:14Speaker 1: distance relationship, and I asked her marry me, and she said, yeah,
- 6:17Speaker 1: we ended up getting married. So that it seems so modern, Well,
- 6:25Speaker 1: it was certainly modern for that point in time. Yes,
- 6:27Speaker 1: it was a lot of fun. We we we had
- 6:29Speaker 1: a we had a good time growing up and going
- 6:31Speaker 1: to college. And we had a ah, a very very
- 6:35Speaker 1: good and healthy marriage while we were married. I mean
- 6:39Speaker 1: we only lasted like fifty some odd years before my
- 6:42Speaker 1: poor wife and the way she had co op d
- 6:45Speaker 1: very bad at the end, and uh uh I ended
- 6:48Speaker 1: up passing away. So but yeah, we had we had
- 6:51Speaker 1: a good life. Uh and uh and and I certainly
- 6:56Speaker 1: have no complaints about any part of it. Yeah, Hey, John, Um,
- 7:01Speaker 1: just to give perspective here, what year did you two meet?
- 7:07Speaker 1: We met in nineteen sixty Okay, that was her freshman
- 7:15Speaker 1: year at in Girls College. And I graduated in sixty
- 7:19Speaker 1: two and she graduated in sixty four from from Mount
- 7:23Speaker 1: Mary College. So that was a long time ago. That was, uh,
- 7:29Speaker 1: sixty sixty years ago? Is so? Yeah, sixty years ago
- 7:37Speaker 1: on the fourth of July is when we got married.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Oh man, Oh, that's that's such a incredible story. Well, yeah,
- 7:44Speaker 1: we we had a good life. We had a we
- 7:46Speaker 1: had a great time. John. We have a lot of
- 7:50Speaker 1: fans of years, and I believe it or not, I'm
- 7:52Speaker 1: not just saying that to say it. Well, there's a
- 7:54Speaker 1: lot of people that are so excited to listen to
- 7:56Speaker 1: you today here on the podcast. And so they did
- 7:58Speaker 1: send in some questions that if you don't mind, Uh,
- 8:02Speaker 1: Astley and I would love to just ask you there
- 8:04Speaker 1: random uh and some of them are awkward, but I
- 8:08Speaker 1: think you're the right person to answer them. So here's
- 8:09Speaker 1: the first question for you. I'm just gonna dive in.
- 8:13Speaker 1: One of the questions sent in was sent in was
- 8:16Speaker 1: was hooking up or friends with benefits terms back in
- 8:19Speaker 1: the twenties when you were in your twenties or thirties
- 8:22Speaker 1: or are these just modern terms today? So again the
- 8:25Speaker 1: question is was hooking up or friends with benefits a
- 8:29Speaker 1: thing when you were in your twenties or thirties. If
- 8:33Speaker 1: it was, I'd never heard of it, So yeah, I
- 8:37Speaker 1: am hooking up was, but hooking up with benefits? Uh no,
- 8:43Speaker 1: that's not my contemporary saying. Okay, yeah, hooking up was
- 8:48Speaker 1: was something that was was definitely that was that was
- 8:52Speaker 1: a common expression, and yes, that's what we did. That's right. Well,
- 8:57Speaker 1: is it like hanging out though, right, you're like going
- 8:59Speaker 1: to hook up? You're gonna it was. It didn't have
- 9:03Speaker 1: any it didn't have any sexual connotations. It was it
- 9:06Speaker 1: was strictly h a friendship thing, which inevitably always would
- 9:12Speaker 1: lead to more than that. But it didn't necessarily start
- 9:15Speaker 1: out as a as a romantic type of a thing. Yeah,
- 9:18Speaker 1: well that happens, it always leads to more. Well, next
- 9:21Speaker 1: question for you is maybe not always, but frequently frequently. Okay,
- 9:26Speaker 1: that's a good way to say. See you're a good
- 9:27Speaker 1: podcast host. Do you make sure your words are spot
- 9:30Speaker 1: on or I'm a little more loose here. The next
- 9:43Speaker 1: question is back in the day, what was your ideal date?
- 9:49Speaker 1: My ideal date? Yes, good grief. I don't know. For
- 9:55Speaker 1: the guy, it was finding you a young woman who
- 9:57Speaker 1: was willing to make out and not noting and not
- 10:02Speaker 1: necessarily get any serious ideas about it, is right, I don't.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I don't imagine that's any different thing today. I mean,
- 10:09Speaker 1: when when people get acquainted and if there's any kind
- 10:14Speaker 1: of spark, they're all they feel like it ought to
- 10:17Speaker 1: lead somewhere, not necessarily something serious, but certainly I'm yeah,
- 10:24Speaker 1: that's fair, that's fair. You're not wrong, I don't. I mean,
- 10:29Speaker 1: isn't isn't that the way things are today too? I mean,
- 10:31Speaker 1: you guys are are today's generation more than my gotta
- 10:34Speaker 1: believe you much. Your generation as ours haven't changed that. Yeah,
- 10:40Speaker 1: you're not wrong. No, it's the same way. Okay. Obviously,
- 10:45Speaker 1: dating apps today are one of the most common ways
- 10:48Speaker 1: of meeting people. How do you feel about dating apps
- 10:52Speaker 1: and would you have been using one back in near
- 10:55Speaker 1: day when you were dating? No? I don't think so. Ah,
- 11:04Speaker 1: I just I can't conceive how you can get to
- 11:08Speaker 1: know a person other than other than a physics uh,
- 11:14Speaker 1: through you know, through through podcasts, through ah, through you
- 11:19Speaker 1: know through that. Um, there's nothing like meeting a person
- 11:26Speaker 1: in person and making making an initial contact. And I
- 11:31Speaker 1: just can't. I can't picture today's dating that way. It's well,
- 11:39Speaker 1: it's not even it's not even as as much fun.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I would think as as a blind date. At least
- 11:44Speaker 1: at a blind date, you get to meet a person
- 11:46Speaker 1: in person, and you can you can make a judgment.
- 11:50Speaker 1: And blind dates for more common in my day. That's
- 11:52Speaker 1: where a friend of yours or or a friend of
- 11:57Speaker 1: a woman that you knew would hook you up with
- 12:00Speaker 1: one of her friends, or you know, the guy would
- 12:03Speaker 1: hook uh. I would ask his date if you could
- 12:08Speaker 1: find a date for a good buddy of his. So
- 12:11Speaker 1: I don't think. I don't think that not meeting in
- 12:17Speaker 1: person has has would have any attraction to my generation.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I don't. I certainly don't believe it. And for you,
- 12:24Speaker 1: a blind date was truly blind. It wasn't like you
- 12:26Speaker 1: were looking at Instagram's beforehand. That's true, that's true, But
- 12:31Speaker 1: but you always relied on your friend or that that
- 12:39Speaker 1: the person you were getting hooked up with wasn't a
- 12:42Speaker 1: total and uh mental dog. You know, you couldn't You
- 12:49Speaker 1: couldn't always You couldn't always know for sure what you
- 12:53Speaker 1: were going to be getting as far as as as
- 12:55Speaker 1: far as whether there'd be any physical attraction. But physical attraction,
- 13:01Speaker 1: at least my generation, anything that you were looking for.
- 13:04Speaker 1: You were looking for somebody that was that you could
- 13:07Speaker 1: talk to, and if it developed some more in friendship White,
- 13:12Speaker 1: that was great. But you didn't necessarily start out a
- 13:17Speaker 1: physical attraction, although certainly that that that came into it eventually. Yeah. Well, John,
- 13:23Speaker 1: I have one last question for you, because I know
- 13:25Speaker 1: we have a limited amount of time and you do
- 13:27Speaker 1: have a card game to get back to and your
- 13:28Speaker 1: friends waiting. Uh, your granddaughter is about to be on
- 13:33Speaker 1: every magazine cover in the United States of America and
- 13:37Speaker 1: a lot of parts around the world. She's gonna be
- 13:39Speaker 1: talked about, she's gonna be celebrated. You're gonna see her
- 13:41Speaker 1: love story unfull magazine cover. Oh yeah, she's gonna be
- 13:44Speaker 1: all these magazines almost guarantee. Oh yeah, she's gonna be
- 13:48Speaker 1: all over the place. Um, how do you feel about
- 13:50Speaker 1: all yeah? Yeah, how do you feel about all this?
- 13:56Speaker 1: Are you excited for it? Are you nervous. What is
- 14:00Speaker 1: your mind? I I think it's great. She is such
- 14:04Speaker 1: a she is sh she is a complete dingbat. But
- 14:08Speaker 1: I love her dearly. And that's that's part of the
- 14:10Speaker 1: part of the h why I love her, because she's
- 14:16Speaker 1: she's such a special I am. I'm thrilled for her.
- 14:20Speaker 1: I'm just I think it's a great thing. I think
- 14:22Speaker 1: it's something that she's looking forward to. I don't think
- 14:27Speaker 1: that there's any fear, and I think it's just super
- 14:31Speaker 1: lover for and I'm and I'm gonna make her take
- 14:34Speaker 1: me out for a good dinner. So as soon as
- 14:36Speaker 1: she gets she better, she better do that. Uh. And
- 14:40Speaker 1: she's gonna have the hookups to take you this special place. Hey,
- 14:43Speaker 1: who knows, we might even see you in Los Angeles
- 14:46Speaker 1: on our television's at some point. Uh. Well, Grandpa John,
- 14:51Speaker 1: it was a pleasure having you today, Ashley, you have
- 14:53Speaker 1: anything else. Thank you. It's been a pleasure being with
- 14:56Speaker 1: you all too. I just wanted to know if you
- 14:58Speaker 1: could confirm your appearance the show this season. Are you
- 15:01Speaker 1: gonna be helping Gabby along the way with some advice? Oh? Sure,
- 15:07Speaker 1: if she is. If advice, I'd be glad to give
- 15:09Speaker 1: her some bad advice. I'm I'm easy. We'll just like
- 15:14Speaker 1: good grand Paul's are hey, get back to the card game.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us today, and best of luck with
