Transcript
- 0:02Welcome to the Voices of Life, a ministry of
- 0:05the Church for Life, and I'm your host, Pastor
- 0:06David. Today we begin week 8 of our 12 -week
- 0:10journey, Living with Purpose, a God -Centered
- 0:12Life. This week, we're stepping into a theme
- 0:15that touches every part of Christian life, trust
- 0:19and surrender. If you've ever felt overwhelmed,
- 0:24if you've tried to control outcomes, carried
- 0:28anxiety about the future, or struggled to let
- 0:33go, this week is for you. Because trust is not
- 0:37passive. Trust is powerful. Trust is active faith.
- 0:41Trust is spiritual strength and surrender. And
- 0:46let's face it, surrender is not giving up. Surrender
- 0:49is giving God control. Before we go any further,
- 0:54I want to take a breath. Take the breath with
- 0:58me. A nice slow breath. A deep breath. Let your
- 1:04shoulders relax. Let your mind settle. Let your
- 1:08heart open. Because today God wants to speak
- 1:12to you about places in your life where you have
- 1:15been holding on a little too tightly. The places
- 1:20where fear has been louder than faith. The places
- 1:26where control has been stronger than trust. And
- 1:31he's inviting you into something much better.
- 1:36Let's be honest. Trusting God is one of the hardest
- 1:39things we ever learn to do. We trust him with
- 1:43eternity, but we struggle to trust him with tomorrow.
- 1:47We trust him with salvation, but we struggle
- 1:51to trust him with decisions, with finances, relationships,
- 1:55timings, and outcomes. We say, Lord, I trust
- 2:01you. But then we hold on to the steering wheel
- 2:05with white knuckles. Not because we don't love
- 2:09God, but because we're afraid. Afraid of losing
- 2:12control, afraid of being disappointed, afraid
- 2:16of the unknown. But trust is not the absence
- 2:20of fear. Trust is choosing God in the presence
- 2:24of fear. Let's anchor ourselves in the word of
- 2:29God. Proverbs 3, 5, 6 says, Trust in the Lord
- 2:36with all your heart and lean not unto your own
- 2:42understanding. In all your ways submit to him
- 2:47and he will make you, well, make your path straight.
- 2:54This is not a suggestion. This is a promise.
- 2:56When you trust God fully, when you surrender
- 2:59your understanding, when you submit your ways,
- 3:03he will direct your path. Not might, not maybe,
- 3:07not possibly, he will. Trust is not pretending
- 3:12everything is fine. Trust is not ignoring the
- 3:16reality. Trust is not suppressing emotion. And
- 3:21it's not spiritual denial. And trust is not saying,
- 3:26I'm okay when I'm really not. You can't people
- 3:31say, I'm fine, I'm okay when your heart is breaking.
- 3:35Trust is not acting strong when you feel weak.
- 3:39Trust is not forcing yourself to feel something
- 3:42you don't feel yet. Trust is not perfection.
- 3:46Trust is dependence. Trust is choosing to believe
- 3:51God even when you don't understand. Trust is
- 3:56choosing to follow God even when the path is
- 3:58unclear. Trust is choosing to rest in God even
- 4:03when the outcome is unknown. Trust is choosing
- 4:09to surrender control because you know God is
- 4:13good. Trust is not a feeling. Trust is a decision.
- 4:19And a decision we have to make each and every
- 4:21day. Some of us have been carrying the burden
- 4:26of control far too long. Trying to fix everything,
- 4:31trying to manage everything, to predict everything,
- 4:33protect everything, hold everything together.
- 4:36And it's exhausting. Control is heavy. It is
- 4:42draining. It is stressful. And let's face it,
- 4:45it's unsustainable. You were never designed to
- 4:49carry what only God can carry. Surrender is not
- 4:54losing. Surrender is relief. One of our biggest
- 5:01obstacles to trust is timing. We want answers
- 5:05now. We want clarity now. We want breakthrough
- 5:11now. We want resolution now. But God works on
- 5:20different timeline. A wiser timeline, a kinder
- 5:23timeline, a perfect timeline. God is never late
- 5:28and God is never early. God is always right on
- 5:32time. Trust is choosing to believe that when
- 5:39the waiting feels long, it's really not long
- 5:44at all. It was right there in front of you. It
- 5:48happened when you need it. Hold your hand out
- 5:52in front of you. Palm up. Now imagine the thing
- 5:59you've been trying to control. Maybe a situation,
- 6:03a relationship, a decision, some fear, a future
- 6:07outcome. Now close your hand into a fist. Feel
- 6:14the tension. Feel the strain. Feel the weight
- 6:19as it begins to shake. This is what control does.
- 6:25Now slowly open your hand. Let your fingers relax.
- 6:31Let your palm open. Let the tension go. Say quietly,
- 6:38Lord, I surrender this to you. That is trust.
- 6:45That is surrender. And that is worship. Let's
- 6:51pray. Father, we come before you today with open
- 6:56hearts. Teach us to trust you with everything.
- 7:01Teach us to surrender what we cannot control.
- 7:05Teach us to rest in your goodness and your timing.
- 7:11Where there is fear, bring us peace. Where there
- 7:16is anxiety, bring calm. where there's striving,
- 7:21bring rest. We place our lives in your hands.
- 7:25In Jesus' name, amen. Well, we opened our hearts
- 7:43earlier to the meaning of trust. And the beauty
- 7:48of surrender. Now let's go deeper. We're going
- 7:54to go inward. We're just going to be totally
- 7:57honest. Because trust is not just a belief. Trust
- 8:01is a battle. Trust is a choice. It becomes a
- 8:05spiritual discipline and surrender. And surrender
- 8:11itself is not a moment. Surrender is a lifestyle.
- 8:17Let's talk about the barriers that make trust
- 8:20difficult. Because if we don't name them, we
- 8:23can't overcome them. There are three major barriers
- 8:27most believers face. Fear, control, and disappointment.
- 8:32Let's walk through each one. Barrier number one,
- 8:36fear. Fear constantly whispers, what if God doesn't
- 8:42come through? What if God isn't really listening?
- 8:47What if things get worse? What if I lose something
- 8:50important? What if I get hurt again? And fear
- 8:54is very loud. It's pretty convincing. It's definitely
- 8:57persistent. But fear is not the truth. Fear is
- 9:02the enemy's voice trying to drown out the voice
- 9:06of God. Trust is choosing to believe God over
- 9:10fear. Let's look at barrier two, control. Control
- 9:18is the illusion that we can manage outcomes better
- 9:21than God can. We try to plan everything, predict
- 9:27everything, protect everything, fix everything.
- 9:31But control is a burden we were never designed
- 9:34to carry. Control is heavy. It's exhausting.
- 9:38It's definitely unsustainable. Surrender is not
- 9:41losing control. Surrender is giving control to
- 9:44the one who never fails. The last barrier, barrier
- 9:51three, disappointment. This one's deep. Some
- 9:56of us struggle to trust God because of past disappointment.
- 10:01A prayer that wasn't answered the way we had
- 10:04hoped. A situation that didn't change when we
- 10:09begged God to intervene. A season that felt silent.
- 10:15A moment that felt unfair and disappointment
- 10:17can quickly harden the heart. But hear this.
- 10:23God's no is never rejection. God's wait is never
- 10:30abandonment. God's silence is never absence.
- 10:37Trust is choosing to believe God's character
- 10:40even when you don't understand God's timing.
- 10:47There are lies the enemy uses to keep you from
- 10:50surrendering. Lies like, you're on your own.
- 10:56No one will take care of you. If you don't control
- 11:00it, it will fall apart. God helps those who help
- 11:05themselves. You can't trust anyone, not even
- 11:10God. These lies create spiritual tension. They
- 11:15create emotional exhaustion. They create distance
- 11:19between you and God. But surrender breaks the
- 11:24lies. Surrender says, God, I trust you more than
- 11:27my fears, more than my plans, and more than my
- 11:31understanding. Here's the truth that sets your
- 11:36heart free. God is trustworthy, not sometimes,
- 11:39not occasionally, not when things are easy, always.
- 11:42God is faithful. He is good. He is present. God
- 11:47is wise and loving. God is consistent. And God
- 11:52has never failed you. Not once, not ever. Even
- 11:56when you didn't see it. Even when you didn't
- 11:58feel it. Even when you didn't understand it.
- 12:00God was working. Surrender is not a one -time
- 12:05event. Surrender is a daily rhythm. Every morning
- 12:08you have a choice. Carry the weight or release
- 12:13the weight. Control the outcome or trust the
- 12:16outcome. Hold on or let go. Surrender sounds
- 12:25like, Lord, this day is yours. Lord, my plans
- 12:30are yours. My relationships are yours. My future
- 12:34is yours. Lord, my fears are yours. Surrender
- 12:39is worship. It's freedom. It's peace of mind.
- 12:45There will be moments when trust feels impossible.
- 12:47Moments when the situation looks hopeless. Moments
- 12:52when the answer seems delayed. Moments when the
- 12:55future feels uncertain. And those moments you
- 12:59don't feel you have perfect faith or even need
- 13:03it. But what you do need is honest faith. Faith
- 13:09that says, Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.
- 13:14God honors honest faith. God strengthens honest
- 13:18faith. God responds to honest faith. Let's do
- 13:25a simple exercise together. Place your hand over
- 13:28your heart. Take a slow breath in. Now exhale
- 13:34slowly. As you breathe out, imagine releasing
- 13:40the weight you've been carrying. The fear, the
- 13:44pressure, the anxiety, the need to control. Now
- 13:49breathe in again. And as you exhale slowly again,
- 13:54imagine receiving God's peace, God's presence,
- 13:59God's strength, God's rest. Say quietly, Lord,
- 14:08I trust you. Lord, I surrender. Let us pray Father
- 14:17thank you for your patience as we learn to trust
- 14:20you more deeply Thank you for your grace as we
- 14:23surrender what we cannot control Break the lies
- 14:28that have held us back heal the disappointments
- 14:32that have wounded our hearts Strengthen our faith
- 14:36as we walk with you Teach us to trust your timing,
- 14:44your wisdom, and your love. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 14:57Let's explore now how trust and surrender reshape
- 15:01your identity and your relationships and helps
- 15:05you with your spiritual maturity. Your identity
- 15:09is shaped by what you trust. If you trust fear,
- 15:15your identity becomes anxious. If you trust control,
- 15:21your identity becomes rigid. If you trust people's
- 15:25approval, your identity becomes fragile. But
- 15:32when you trust God, your identity becomes anchored.
- 15:36Anchored in truth, anchored in grace, in purpose,
- 15:40and in love. Trust stabilizes your identity.
- 15:46Surrender strengthens your identity. Let me speak
- 15:53this over you today. When you trust God, you
- 15:56become someone who walks in peace. Someone who
- 16:00carries calm. Someone who radiates confidence.
- 16:07Someone who stands firm, even when life shakes.
- 16:14Trust makes you steady. Surrender makes you strong.
- 16:17You become someone who is not defined by circumstances
- 16:22but by Christ. Purpose is not discovered through
- 16:29striving. Purpose is discovered through surrender.
- 16:32When you surrender, you stop forcing outcomes
- 16:34and start following God's leading. You stop chasing
- 16:39everything and start receiving direction. You
- 16:44stop trying to open doors and start walking through
- 16:46them as God opens those doors for you. Surrender
- 16:52aligns your purpose with God's plan, and God's
- 16:56plan is always better than your pressure. As
- 17:03we develop our spiritual maturity, we have to
- 17:06understand it is not measured by how much you
- 17:09know. Spiritual maturity is measured by how much
- 17:11you trust. Trust is maturity. Surrender is maturity.
- 17:18Dependence on God is maturity. The more you trust
- 17:23God, the more you grow. The more you surrender,
- 17:26the more you mature. Maturity is not perfection.
- 17:30Maturity is reliance. There is a peace that only
- 17:36surrender can bring, a peace that doesn't depend
- 17:39on circumstances. A peace that doesn't depend
- 17:43on clarity. A peace that doesn't depend on outcomes.
- 17:46It is a peace that comes from knowing. Knowing
- 17:52God is in control. He's with me. He's for me.
- 17:55And he won't fail me. Surrender is the doorway
- 18:00to supernatural peace. There will be moments
- 18:08when God asks you to surrender something you
- 18:11deeply value. Maybe a plan, a timeline, a dream,
- 18:15a relationship, a fear, a habit, maybe a comfort
- 18:23zone. And in those moments, you will feel the
- 18:28tension between holding on and letting go. But
- 18:33hear this, God never asks you to release something
- 18:36without giving you something better. It may not
- 18:41look better at first. It may not feel better
- 18:43at first. But God's better is always better.
- 18:52Every believer will face a trust test. Every
- 18:57moment when God invites you to step out before
- 18:59you see the outcome. a moment when god asks you
- 19:02to obey before you understand a moment when god
- 19:07calls you to move before you feel ready trust
- 19:13is not waiting until everything makes sense trust
- 19:16is moving because god said so now place your
- 19:23hands on your lap palms up in this posture of
- 19:29surrender Now quietly say, Lord, everything I
- 19:37have is yours. Everything I fear is yours. Everything
- 19:43I hope for is yours. Feel the peace that comes
- 19:48when your hands are open. Feel the freedom that
- 19:52comes when your heart is open. This is trust.
- 19:57This is surrender. This is worship. let us pray
- 20:02father thank you for shaping us into people who
- 20:06trust you deeply who surrender fully thank you
- 20:11for the peace that comes when we release control
- 20:14thank you for the strength that comes when we
- 20:17depend on you grow our faith grow our maturity
- 20:23grow our confidence in your goodness we place
- 20:28our identity our purpose, and our future in your
- 20:32hands. In Jesus' name, amen. So, let's see where
- 20:41we're going next in this journey. We have to
- 20:45think about where things are going to happen,
- 20:48when things are going to happen, but we don't
- 20:52have to depend on those. We have to think about
- 20:58The trust we've placed in God's. God's trust,
- 21:03his faith in us, is being returned. Trust is
- 21:10not a moment. Trust is a walk, a daily walk,
- 21:15a steady walk, a faithful walk. Trust is choosing
- 21:20to walk with God even when you don't know where
- 21:24the path leads. Trust is choosing to walk with
- 21:28God even when the next step feels uncertain.
- 21:32Trust is choosing to walk with God because you
- 21:35know he is good. Surrender is not something you
- 21:42do once and never revisit. Surrender is a rhythm.
- 21:46It becomes a habit, a posture every morning.
- 21:50You surrender your plans every afternoon. You
- 21:54surrender your worries. And every evening, you
- 21:59surrender your outcomes. Remember, surrender
- 22:03is not weakness. Surrender is worship. There
- 22:07is a freedom that only comes when you let go.
- 22:13You have to let go of the pressure, the fear,
- 22:16the unrealized expectations, the timeline, the
- 22:20outcome. Letting go is not losing control. Letting
- 22:24go is giving control to the one who knows the
- 22:27way. When you let go, you make the room filled
- 22:33with God's heart and spirit. And God will make
- 22:41that move for you. Your trust is a testimony
- 22:46people notice when you walk in peace. Especially
- 22:53during uncertainty. People notice when you stay
- 22:58calm during chaos. People will take notice when
- 23:02you choose faith over fear. Your trust preaches
- 23:06louder than your words. Your surrender reveals
- 23:10the God you believe in. There will be moments
- 23:16when trust costs you something. Moments When
- 23:22you have to release what you wanted. Moments
- 23:26you have to surrender what you planned. Moments
- 23:31when you have to let go of what you thought your
- 23:34life would look like. And in those moments, trust
- 23:37becomes sacrifice. But hear this. God never asks
- 23:42you to surrender something without giving you
- 23:44something better. It may not look... better immediately
- 23:48it may not feel better at first but god's better
- 23:50is always better god's timing is one of the greatest
- 23:56gifts because god sees what you cannot see god
- 24:00knows what you do not know god understands what
- 24:05you cannot understand and when you trust his
- 24:08timing you step into peace peace that says i
- 24:14don't have to rush I don't have to force it.
- 24:18I don't have to make it happen. God is working.
- 24:22Trust is rest. Surrender is peace. I want you
- 24:27to imagine there is a door in front of you. Simple
- 24:31door, quiet door, a door that leads to peace.
- 24:35Now imagine yourself standing at that door with
- 24:39something in your hands. It may be a fear, a
- 24:43plan. a timeline, a dream, or some burden. Now
- 24:48imagine yourself placing that burden on the ground.
- 24:52Just drop it outside the door. And now, open
- 25:00that door and take that step. Take that step
- 25:05through it. Leave the burden where it is and
- 25:10just walk into the room of trust, the room of
- 25:13surrender and rest. This is the life God is inviting
- 25:18you into. Let us pray. Father, thank you for
- 25:27the journey you have taken us on this week. Thank
- 25:29you for the teachings of trust, the teachings
- 25:34of belief, the teachings of spiritual resilience.
- 25:40Thank you for teaching us to trust you with our
- 25:43whole hearts. Thank you for showing us the beauty
- 25:46of surrender. We release our fears. We release
- 25:51our plans. We release our timelines and outcomes.
- 25:54We place everything in your hand. Teach us to
- 26:00walk in daily trust. Teach us to live in daily
- 26:04surrender. Teach us to rest in your goodness.
- 26:11In Jesus' name, amen. This concludes week eight
- 26:17of our 12 -week journey living with purpose in
- 26:20God -centered life. You have taken a powerful
- 26:23step this week, a step toward peace, freedom,
- 26:26and toward deeper faith. Trust is not easy, and
- 26:31surrender is not simple, but both are beautiful.
- 26:34Both are holy. Both are transformative, and you
- 26:39are not walking this journey alone. God is with
- 26:43you. Grace is with you. Purpose is with you.
- 26:51Thank you for joining me today on Voices of Life,
- 26:53a ministry of the Church for Life. I'm Pastor
- 26:56David, and I'll see you next week when we step
- 26:59into Week 9.
