brave men and women who died in service of their country.

1:03
thousand people gather for a special memorial service at the
1:09
Arlington National Cemetery. The President or Vice President of the
1:12
United States usually makes a speech about the bravery and
1:16
sacrifice of America's soldiers. A wreath is placed at the
1:19

1:45
men and women who gave their lives to protect the
1:47
country's freedom. Our next book is called A Memorial Day's
1:53
Surprise and it was published by Boyd's Mills Press and
1:58
Highlights Company. It has a copyright eyear of two thousand
2:02
and four and the author is Teresa Martin Golden. Is
2:07
it a really big surprise, Mama asked Marco. Oh, yes, Mama,
2:13
it is a very big surprise. But we must hurry.
2:16
The parade will start soon. Marco held Mama's hand tightly
2:21
and walked faster. Many people are leaving the porches of
2:24
their brick row houses. Children skip down the steps of
2:27
the big apartment building a buelow below. Marco's grandfather lived
2:33
there on the fifth floor. But Mama said there was
2:36
no time to stop. What could the surprise be that
2:39
made Mama rush? So they always stop to visit a buelow.
2:44
His grandfather. Marco watched the flags dance in the breeze.
2:50
What is Memory Day, Mama, he asked. Mama smiled. It
2:53
is called Memorial Day, she said, But Memory Day is
2:57
a good name too. It is time to remember some
2:59
special people who, Mama, you will see, she said, Beat Beat.
3:05
Two girls swoop past Marco. Red and blue streamers fluttered
3:08
from their bicycles and swished in the wind. Everyone was
3:12
in a hurry to get to the parade. When they
3:16
reached the avenue, Marco's eyes open wide. All the stores
3:19
where Mama liked to shop were closed. The sidewalks were
3:23
crowded with people sitting on folating chairs or colorful blankets.
3:27
Two boys were even seen on top of the big
3:29
blue mailbox. Marco heard someone call in his name. Look, Mama,
3:34
he pointed across the white avenue. Jenna is here too.
3:38
Is this the surprise, no, Marco, Mama answered, The surprise
3:43
is even more special than seeing your best friend at
3:46
the parades. Marco sat on the curb with Jenna. The
3:52
sun was hot on the top of his head. The
3:54
big avenue seemed different without its zooming cars and rumbling trucks.
3:58
It's like a rushing river that had run out of water.
4:01
Marco jumped up. Did you hear that? He asked. The
4:05
faint brump, bump, bump of a drum sounded in the distance.
4:09
Marco held his breath as the band marched closer and
4:13
stopped right in front of him. The leader slowly raised
4:16
the baton and the music burst into the air, horns
4:20
and drums and the clash of the cymbals. Marco stood
4:23
very still. The music was inside him, alive and jumping
4:28
in his chest boom boom. He felt a thunder and
4:31
his stomach crash, crash. It tingled down his arms. Batons
4:36
flew in the air, Pump pumps wished, feet stamped in rhythm,
4:39
and the band moved on. Marco wished way Low could
4:45
have heard the music. Maybe it would have made his
4:47
legs tingle again. Was that the surprise, Mama, Marco shouted?
4:52
Was it no, Marco, Mama said, the surprise is even
4:57
more special than the marching man. A siren screamed and
5:01
Marco jumped. A long red fire engine rode down the avenue,
5:05
It's light spinning and flashing. A firefighter walked beside the
5:09
big engine. He stopped and shook Marco's hand. He gave
5:13
Marco a little flag. Marco waved the flag at the
5:16
noisy fire truck. Was that the surprise, mama. Mama shook
5:20
her head. No, Marco, the surprise is even more special
5:24
than needing a real firefighter. Look, Jenna shouted. A truck
5:29
was pulling a big float. Right down the street was
5:32
the statue of Liberty. A man with a dark beard
5:35
stood in front of the statue with his tall hat
5:37
and long face. He looked just like Abraham Lincoln. Jenna frowned.
5:42
They are throwing things at people. She said, that is
5:46
not nice. It's candy, screamed Marco. Marco and Jena dropped
5:52
to the ground scooped up all the candy that fell
5:54
at their feet. Mama look. Marco opened his fists and
5:58
showed her all sweets he had collected. That was the surprise,
6:03
wasn't it, No, Marco, Mama said, the surprise is even
6:07
more special than catching candy. At the parade. Marco put
6:14
a butterscotch into his pocket. He would give it to
6:17
Blaylow when he told him all about this parade. What
6:21
was happening? All the people stood up and began clapping.
6:24
Marco could not see. There were no sirens, no band,
6:28
and no falling candle candy. Still, the clapping became louder.
6:33
Men and women in uniforms with shiny metals came marching
6:37
down the avenue. Right up in the very front was
6:40
Marco's grandfather, A bloblow. Marco shouted and waved his hands.
6:45
Why is your grandfather in the parade? And I asked,
6:48
Marco stood tall. My grandfather is a hero. A blob blow.
6:53
Put on his arms, put out his arms, and Marco
6:57
ran and climbed into his lap. Happy Memorial Day, Marco,
7:01
A bloblow, said. Marco threw his arms around his neck.
7:05
Happy Memory Day, A blob low. He took it the
7:11
butter scotch out of his pocket and pressed into his
7:13
grandfather's warm hand. Marco did not need to ask Mama.
7:17
He knew this was the best Memory Day surprise of all.
7:22
Her next book is titled Rolling Thunder and was published
7:25

10:21
paddled in a river where the warm waters run. Over
10:25
in a river where the cattails grew, Lift a mother
10:28

10:33
We stand, said the two. So they stood like statues
10:37
where the cat tails grew. Over in a river flowing
10:40
out to the sea, Lift a mother while salmon in
10:43
her little smokes. Three splash, said the mother. We splash,
10:48

10:54
nest on the shore, lift a mother mallard duck and
10:57
her little ducklings. For why bottle, said the mother. We waddle,

their nests on the shore. Over in a river, where
11:08
they swallowed prey alive livet a mother water snake in
11:11
her little hatchlings. Five slither, said the mother. We slither,

11:35
lodge built with sticks. Over in a river, darting up
11:38
toward heaven, lived a mother dragonfly and her dragonfly seven whirls,
11:44
said the mother. We whirl, said the seven, So they
11:47
whirled above a river, darting up towards heaven. Over in
11:52
a river where they could communicate, lived a furry mother

11:59
We wheels, said the ape. So they squealed in a

12:06
the warm sunshine lived a mother tree frog and her

12:55
Next book is titled Yah Yah in the Sea and
12:58
it was published by din And on Your Book Simon
13:02
and Schuster Books for Young Readers. It has a copy
13:06
right ear of twenty twenty four and it was written
13:10
by a caring good mer Abel. On the first tip spring,
13:15
when the city is quiet and still, Mommy wakes up
13:20
me up. Before the sun I was streaming. I was
13:22
a mermaid, a mermaid that could fly. I do not
13:26
want to open my eyes. Then I remember something big
13:30
is happening today. Mommy and I are going to the sea.
13:33
I hop out of bed and press my hands on
13:36
the window. The sky is deep, dark blue. Mommy lays
13:40
out my clothes black pants, green sweater, polka dot socks,
13:44
and my magical purple light up sneakers. There is also
13:48
a baggy in my piggy bank picked the shining stemes.
13:51
Mama says, we are going to take them to Mama
13:55
Ocean and make a wish. Mommy brushes my hair into
13:58
an afropuff and we put on our jackets. Off we go.
14:03
First stop is the bodega. Mommy gets me an egg
14:07
and she's sandwich and orders herself a cup of coffee
14:10
cream and two sugars. She tells the cashier the steam
14:14
from her drink makes smoky puffs in the air. There
14:17
are not many people outside, just the African ladies near
14:20
the subway station asking Mommy if they can braid our hair.
14:24
Not today's sisters. Mommy says, we're going to the sea.
14:29
I shout with the skip. Mommy pays our fare. I
14:33
push through the turnstile first. The age tray speeds into
14:38
the station. When the doors open. Mommy's three friends are
14:42
sitting in the first car. They have bags on their
14:45
laps and smiles on their faces. Ya yays here, says
14:49
Antie Renee with a hug. Perfect says Anti Dream with
14:53
a nod. Our Little Mermaid says Antie Stephanie with a wink.
14:58
The train rumbles and wishes underground from station to station.
15:02
I have a book, but I like watching the passengers
15:04
come and go and listen to Mommy and Auntie's talk
15:07
and laugh. After so many stops, the subway stretches up
15:12
a hill and is suddenly outside. We're the only ones
15:15
left in our car. Mommy holds my hand as we
15:18
walk off the train, through the station, out the door,
15:21
down a sidewalk, and there is the beach. Mommy, the sea.
15:27
I squeal, giving her hand a big squeeze. As we
15:31
walk towards the water, Mommy and Auntie stop. They're laughing
15:34
and get really quiet. There is so cool, so I
15:37
put my hands in my pockets as we shove our
15:40
shoes against the sand. We stop on the shore just
15:43
before the baby waves reach our toes and we lay
15:49
out a big blanket. Mommy and Aunties open their bags.
15:54
They each have white clothes and white towels. Auntie Renee
15:57
has a jar of molasses, sticky and sweet. Antie Dream
16:01
has a bouquet of flowers. Auntie Stephanie has slices of watermelon.
16:06
Mommy has our seven shining dimes. They sit down, hold
16:10
hands and breathe together, and one by one, Mommy and
16:13
Aunties gather their gifts and each takes two flowers, one white,
16:18
one blue. Mommy smiles at me. Stay right here, ya, y'all.
16:23
Mommy will be right back. We're going to greet Mama Ocean,
16:27
thank her for a grace, and give her our gifts.
16:30
With flowers in their hands and no shoes on their feet,
16:33
they walk quietly towards the sea, past where the sand
16:36
is wet, past the baby waves that tookletoes, and straight
16:41
into the water. It must be so cold. Mommy and
16:45
Aunties each stand in their own space and say prayers
16:48
only Mama Ocean can hear. They give her their gifts,
16:51
the molasses, watermelon, coins, and flowers. Antie Renee's head is bowed.
16:57
Auntie Dream faces the horizon. Auntie Stephanie is washing her locks.
17:02
Mommy is crying happy tears. Then come war gives for
17:07
Mama Ocean. Mommy gives her a scarf, Auntie Dream gives
17:12
her a ring. Auntie Stephanie gives her a head rat
17:15
Anti Renee gives her a dress, and they lay the
17:18
rest of their clothes on Mama Ocean. I look around
17:22
the beach. I am glad it's just us. Soon Mommy
17:25
and Aunties run out of the water, giggling. They scoot
17:29
fast across the sand the way I scooted into Mommy's
17:32
arms after my bath. My hand Mommy and Aunties their
17:35
towels and they dry off in a hurry, and they
17:38
slip on their all white clothes, pack their bags and
17:41
walk towards the train station. Looking straight ahead. Mommy, I whispered,
17:47
the flowers are still on the sand. Mama Ocean will
17:51
take them soon, she says. It is the first day
17:53
of spring and we are leaving the past behind. No
17:57
looking back. I try to do his mind. He says
18:00
it not turn around, but I sneak a peek behind
18:03
me towards Mama Ocean. The baby waves play with the
18:07
flowers as the sun rises in the sky. Our next
18:12
of books will be about different states in the United States,
18:16
and the first one is called Kentucky. It was published
18:22

18:41
State Resort Park. A family quickly sets up their tent.
18:45
They head down to the Cumberland River for a guided
18:48
rafting trip. Bright yellow gold finches fly along the shore
18:52
as the river tosses the raft about. In the late afternoon,
18:56
the family goes for horse bike ride through the forest.
18:59
After whener by the campfire, they head to Cumberland Falls.
19:03
The night is clear, The only sound is the rush
19:06
