- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and can you feel it?
- 0:16It is so close to Christmas and it is just an absolute delight
- 0:20to be able to put on our Christmas music.
- 0:23I was just telling Yvonne before I started recording how excited
- 0:26I am that it is time to put on the Christmas music.
- 0:29And today and tomorrow we are going to be setting the stage
- 0:32for Christmas Day. We are going to be beginning
- 0:35reading through the book of Luke and Luke chapter 1 is about as
- 0:39long as they come. It's like 80 verses long.
- 0:42So we are going to have that and read the first half today and
- 0:44the second half tomorrow ready for the Christmas story on
- 0:48Christmas Day. Our friends, I am so, so
- 0:52delighted that you have chosen during this busy time to come
- 0:56and sit or stand or run or sleep or whatever you're doing with my
- 0:59company so that we can get our hearts ready to welcome the
- 1:04Saviour of the world born that Christmas Day.
- 1:08Are you ready? I am too.
- 1:10We are going to open up God's Word to this beautiful gospel
- 1:14written by our mate Luke the doctor, written to convince his
- 1:20friend Theophilus that yes, indeed, Jesus is his Lord and
- 1:25your Lord and my Lord. So with nothing left to do, let
- 1:29us read this together. We're going to read Luke chapter
- 1:331, verses 1 to 45. Many people have set out to
- 1:47write accounts about the events that have been fulfilled among
- 1:50us. They use the eyewitness report
- 1:52circulating among us from the early disciples.
- 1:55Having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I
- 1:59also have decided to write an accurate account for you, Most
- 2:04Honourable Theophilus, so you can be certain of the truth of
- 2:08everything you were taught. When Herod was King of Judea,
- 2:14there was a Jewish priest named Zechariah.
- 2:17He was a member of the priestly order of Abujar, and his wife
- 2:20Elizabeth was also from the priestly line of Aaron.
- 2:24Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God's eyes, careful
- 2:28to obey all the Lord's commands and regulations.
- 2:31They had no children because Elizabeth was unable to
- 2:35conceive, and they were both very old.
- 2:39One day Zechariah was serving God in the temple, for his order
- 2:43was on duty that week. As was the custom of the
- 2:45priests, he was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary of the Lord
- 2:50and burn incense. While the incense was being
- 2:53burned, a great crowd stood outside praying.
- 2:57While Zechariah was in the sanctuary, an Angel of the Lord
- 3:00appeared to him, standing to the right of the incense altar.
- 3:04Zechariah was shaken and overwhelmed with fear when he
- 3:07saw him, but the Angel said, don't be afraid Zechariah, God
- 3:12has heard your prayer. Your wife Elizabeth will give
- 3:16you a son and you are to name him John.
- 3:20You will have great joy and gladness and many will rejoice
- 3:24at his birth, for he will be great in the eyes of the Lord.
- 3:28He must never touch wine or other alcoholic drinks.
- 3:32He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before his birth,
- 3:36and he will turn many Israelites to the Lord their God.
- 3:39He will be a man with the spirit and power of Elijah.
- 3:44He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord.
- 3:47He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and
- 3:51he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom
- 3:54of the godly. Zechariah said to the Angel, How
- 3:58can I be sure this will happen? I'm an old man now, and my wife
- 4:03is also well along in years. Then the Angel said, I am
- 4:08Gabriel. I stand in the very presence of
- 4:11God. It was he who sent me to bring
- 4:14you this good news. But now, since you didn't
- 4:18believe what I said, you will be silent and unable to speak until
- 4:23the child is born. For my words will certainly be
- 4:26fulfilled at the proper time. Meanwhile, the people were
- 4:31waiting for Zechariah to come out of the sanctuary, wondering
- 4:34why he was taking so long. When he finally did come out, he
- 4:38couldn't speak to them. Then they realised from his
- 4:41gestures and his silence that he must have seen a vision in the
- 4:44sanctuary. When Zechariah's week of service
- 4:48in the temple was over, he returned home.
- 4:51Soon afterward, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and
- 4:55went into seclusion for five months.
- 4:58How kind the Lord is, She exclaimed.
- 5:02He has taken away my disgrace of having no children.
- 5:07In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent
- 5:10the Angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin
- 5:15named Mary. She was engaged to be married to
- 5:19a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David.
- 5:23Gabriel appeared to her and said, greetings, favoured woman,
- 5:28the Lord is with you. Confused and disturbed, Mary
- 5:32tried to think what the Angel could mean.
- 5:35Don't be afraid, Mary, the Angel told her, For you have found
- 5:39favour with God. You will conceive and give birth
- 5:43to a son, and you will name him Jesus.
- 5:47He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most
- 5:50High. The Lord God will give him the
- 5:53throne of his ancestor David, and he will reign over Israel
- 5:57forever. His Kingdom will never end.
- 6:01Mary asked the Angel. But how can this happen?
- 6:05I am a virgin, The Angel replied.
- 6:09The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most
- 6:12High will over shadow you. So the baby to be born will be
- 6:17holy, and he will be called the Son of God.
- 6:21What's more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in
- 6:25her old age. People used to say she was
- 6:28barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her 6th month.
- 6:33For the word of God will never fail.
- 6:36Mary responded. I am the Lord's servant.
- 6:40May everything you have said about me come true.
- 6:45And then the Angel left her. A few days later, Mary hurried
- 6:50to the Hill Country of Judea, to the town where Zechariah lived.
- 6:54She entered the house and greeted Elizabeth.
- 6:58At the sound of Mary's greeting, Elizabeth's child leapt within
- 7:01her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 7:05Elizabeth gave a glad cry and welcomed Mary.
- 7:09God has blessed you above all women and your child is blessed.
- 7:15Why am I so honoured that the mother of my Lord should visit
- 7:19me? When I heard your greeting, the
- 7:22baby in my womb jumped for joy. You are blessed because you
- 7:27believed that the Lord would do what he said
- 7:40by Jesus. As we prepare ourselves for your
- 7:44coming, your coming into this world, that we will celebrate
- 7:48this Christmas. And I pray that you would just
- 7:52give us some moments of peace and quiet and reflection.
- 7:58That we would still this busy time and that we would sit and
- 8:03your presence at your feet and that we would bask in the
- 8:07glorious, glorious truth that you have come.
- 8:12Come not only to rescue us, but also to show us your nature, the
- 8:18nature of the God of the universe.
- 8:20And that, spoiler alert, is the nature of love and kindness and
- 8:26sacrifice. Thank you, Jesus, for all you
- 8:30have done for us. And we wait with bated breath
- 8:33for the celebration of Christmas to celebrate your coming here
- 8:38amongst us in our little old world.
- 8:41Ah, we love you, and we pray this in your wonderful name,
- 8:44Jesus, Amen.
