- 0:02These words spake, Jesus and lifted up his eyes to heaven and
- 0:07said, father, the hour has come glorify thy son, that thy son
- 0:12Also may glorify thee. Hey listeners, this is Nick from
- 0:16scripture Central and today's podcast addresses, the question,
- 0:20how does Jesus intercessory prayer point us to the temple?
- 0:28The Gospel of John contains the longest account of the final
- 0:32intimate moments, Jesus shared with his Apostles immediately
- 0:35before his atoning, sacrifice death, and Resurrection, after
- 0:40delivering a final discourse in the upper room.
- 0:43And on the way to get cemani Jesus lifted up his eyes to
- 0:47heaven and offered a great intercessory prayer for his
- 0:50disciples. Many have noted that this prayer
- 0:53is rightly known as Jesus. High Priestly prayer as it
- 0:58immediately preceded. His atoning sacrifice.
- 1:01William J. Hamlin has also observed that
- 1:03this prayer should be contextualized within the larger
- 1:06Passover Narrative of the last days of the life of Jesus,
- 1:10especially given the nature of Jesus last discourse, this
- 1:14prayer serves as a symbolic Temple for the Gospel of John.
- 1:18It is the meeting place of Heaven and Earth where man
- 1:22encounters God. Many aspects of Jesus /.
- 1:26Thus, reflect the Ancient Temple, and it's related
- 1:29symbols. Ultimately, with the hope that
- 1:31Christ's followers can return to God's presence and become like
- 1:35him. Specifically, Hamblin sites.
- 1:38Six of these features in the prayer, first.
- 1:41Jesus prayer can be best understood within the context,
- 1:45that Jesus himself offered, at the beginning of his final,
- 1:48sermon to the apostles. Jesus told them in my father's
- 1:52house, are many mansions. And if it were not, so I would
- 1:56have told you, I go to prepare a place for you.
- 2:00Notably the phrase, my father's house, only appears one other
- 2:05time in John's gospel, namely, when Jesus is cleansing the
- 2:08temple, however, it is clear that in John 14:2.
- 2:13Jesus was referring not to the Earthly temple in Jerusalem but
- 2:17rather to the Heavenly Temple where God dwells, this can be
- 2:21discerned in Jesus. Following statement I will Come
- 2:24again and receive you unto myself that where I am there, ye
- 2:29may be also in the intercessory prayer itself.
- 2:32This idea is repeated with slight variation, I willed that
- 2:37they also whom thou Hast given me be with me where I am that,
- 2:42they may behold my glory. Thus Jesus makes it clear that
- 2:45he wants his disciples to enter into the presence of the Father
- 2:49in Heaven which is in his Heavenly Temple, second Jesus
- 2:54stated. It's twice in his prayer that he
- 2:56has manifested or declared the name of the father to the
- 2:59disciples and will declare It. Again.
- 3:02By the time of Jesus restrictions had been set in
- 3:05place regarding the ritual writing and pronunciation of the
- 3:09name. Jehovah that had been revealed
- 3:11to Moses on Mount Sinai. These restrictions only
- 3:15permitted priests in the temple to utter the name under two very
- 3:19specific circumstances once a year by the high priest in the
- 3:23temple on. Day of atonement or during the
- 3:26daily recitation of the Priestly.
- 3:28Benediction described in Numbers, Chapter 6, verses, 22
- 3:32through 27 Hamblin, thus observes that.
- 3:35When Jesus declares the name of the father, he is acting within
- 3:39the framework of two important biblical.
- 3:42Traditions, first Jesus is establishing himself as the
- 3:47prophet like unto Moses to whom God revealed his name and
- 3:51second, the claim that Jesus revealed the The name of the
- 3:54father to his disciples would also imply that Jesus claimed
- 3:58the authority of the high priest to reveal the name and offer an
- 4:02atonement for the children of Israel.
- 4:05Third throughout his prayer. Jesus refers to the glory of
- 4:09God. In the Old Testament, the glory
- 4:11of Jehovah is the visible manifestation of the presence of
- 4:15God in the temple or Tabernacle, although often described as a
- 4:19pillar of fire and smoke. The glory of the Lord is said in
- 4:23Ezekiel chapter, In verse 28 to be in the form of a man
- 4:28accordingly. Jesus is Glory related
- 4:30statements would have evoked ideas of God's glorious.
- 4:33Theophanies in the temple and Christ post-mortal glorification
- 4:37by the father would imply a glory.
- 4:40Theophany in the celestial Temple forth.
- 4:44Jesus appears to ritually cast Satan out of the midst of the
- 4:47disciples during his prayer when he requests the father keep them
- 4:52from the evil. Although not Not readily
- 4:54apparent in the King James version, the phrase translated
- 4:58as the evil was widely understood by Christians.
- 5:02To refer to the evil one, that is Satan as such.
- 5:06Jesus is prayer. Reflects the practice during the
- 5:08day of atonement of casting the scapegoat Into the Wilderness,
- 5:13this was a symbolic prerequisite for the purification of Israel
- 5:17and preparation for the visitation of Jehovah with the
- 5:19high priest in the holy of holies of the Tabernacle or
- 5:22Temple. Fifth.
- 5:25Jesus asks, the father to sanctify, his disciples sanctify
- 5:30them through thy truth, and for their sakes.
- 5:32I sanctify myself, that they also might be Sanctified through
- 5:37the truth. As Hamlin has noticed language
- 5:41of Holiness sanctity and consecration is the language of
- 5:45the temple just as the priests of the temple, underwent, a
- 5:49ritual purification and sanctification.
- 5:52So they might be able to serve Christ sanctifies his disciples
- 5:57so that he might send them into the world to teach his gospel.
- 6:02Moreover, the high priest on the day of atonement would
- 6:05similarly, sanctify himself. So that in his Sanctified State,
- 6:10he can officiate in the temple to sanctify the community of
- 6:13Israel through the other day of atonement rituals.
- 6:17Christ. Therefore, identifies himself as
- 6:20the great high priest as he prepares himself to perform the
- 6:24atonement. He also prepares his Apostles to
- 6:28spread the blessings of his atonement to the world through
- 6:31their preaching. Finally, Jesus, prays that his
- 6:34disciples may become like him and his father not only will his
- 6:39disciples be allowed to see the glory of God, but they also are
- 6:43given that Glory, the glory, which thou gavest me.
- 6:46I have given In them that they may be one even as we are one as
- 6:53Hamlin has observed, numerous early, Christian, and Jewish
- 6:56texts culminate with the disciples Ascent, to the
- 7:00Heavenly Temple, where they are enthroned with God, the
- 7:04apostles, Peter, John, and Paul likewise refer to the doctrine
- 7:08of becoming like God at various points in their writings.
- 7:12Early Christians viewed, this Doctrine as the ultimate fate of
- 7:15the righteous Saints. Significantly other early.
- 7:19Christian Traditions link the prayer, Jesus offered in
- 7:22Gethsemane, with rights of the temple.
- 7:25In one, text called the acts of John.
- 7:28It is reported that Jesus first told us to form a circle,
- 7:33holding one another's hands and himself, stood in the middle as
- 7:37he offered this prayer shortly before his arrest.
- 7:42Other early Christians likewise, followed this form of prayer and
- 7:44their worship Hugh. Nibley has identified multiple
- 7:47texts that prominently portray an early Christian prayer circle
- 7:51much like with intercessory prayer nibbly.
- 7:54Observes that the purpose of the prayer circle was to achieve
- 7:58total Unity of minds and hearts and ultimately to prepare those
- 8:02involved. And those prayed for to enter
- 8:05the presence of the Lord, in the Heavenly Temple.
- 8:08Jesus is great. Intercessory prayer must have A
- 8:11profound experience for his close circle of disciples who
- 8:15personally heard him pray on their behalf.
- 8:18Yet his words are truly for all his followers in all ages,
- 8:22including our own Jesus himself, clarified, neither, pray, I for
- 8:27these alone, but for them also, which Shall Believe on me
- 8:31through their word that they all may be one as thou father art in
- 8:36me and I in thee that they may also be one in US.
- 8:41Us. We can be unified with God as we
- 8:45make and keep covenants, both had baptism and in the temple.
- 8:50Modern Saints, take upon themselves, the name of Jesus
- 8:52Christ are cleansed from sin as we are washed and Sanctified by
- 8:57the Holy Ghost receive power to overcome the evil one and
- 9:02ultimately learn all that we must do to enter the kingdom of
- 9:05heaven. As we continually follow, Jesus
- 9:09example, we will enter into a sacred spiritual Unity, shared
- 9:14between the Father, the Son, and all the holy Saints from all
- 9:19dispensations. Thank you for listening to this
