- 0:00SPEAKER_00: As you might know,
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: this gospel is used by some Christians who are separated from us
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: for sad historical reasons to say that Jesus doesn't really respect his mother,
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: and so neither should we.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Catholics are mistaken in honoring and respecting the Blessed Virgin Mary
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: because Jesus is just dismissive towards his mother.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Jesus says in another gospel,
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: he says,
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: who are my brother and my mothers than those who fear the word of God and keep it?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: That, I think,
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: is on its face a bad reading of the text because that would not only be something
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: that Jesus wouldn't do, that would be something that any good son wouldn't do.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: If we believe Jesus is the Son of God,
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: then certainly he would respect and honor his mother as a son regardless of whether
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: or not he was the Son of God and so much more so as the Christ and as the Son
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: of God.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Would he honor and love his mother?
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: But what is he trying to say if he's not trying to tell us
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: that we should disrespect Mary or that she doesn't matter or
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: that his brothers don't matter?
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: What he's trying to tell us is that there is something more important
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: in our Christian faith than simple family ties, than simple human bonds.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: He's saying, who are my mother and my brothers?
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Those who hear the word of God and keep it.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Of course, Mary, as we know, is in the first place in that.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: She's the one preeminently who heard the word of God and keeps it.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: But Jesus is like, that's what's important.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: What's important,
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: the reason why we have as close a relationship as we have is because of our faith,
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: because we hear the word of God,
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: because we have this new way of belonging,
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: which is this Christian community to which we are called.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: And so I think that's a challenge for all of us.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: We are all called to be a part of Christ's family.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: We're all called to be his mother, his father, his brother, his sister.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: We are all called into this new relationship.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: But it's not based on just family ties.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: It's not based on just being raised in a certain way.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Some people think that they were born Catholic.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Nobody was born Catholic.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Everybody was baptized.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: We have to enter into this community somehow.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And it's up to us whether we are going to intentionally live in this community Or
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: whether we're just going to sort of rest on our laurels.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: We're just going to say, well, you know, I'm Catholic.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: That's just the way I am.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: That's not enough.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: It's something that we have to choose to do.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Who are my mother and my brothers?
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Those who hear the Word of God and act on it.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: That is our challenge,
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: to listen to Christ's words,
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: to listen to the Word of God, and then to put it into practice in our lives.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: And in so doing and only in so doing will we be The brothers,
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: the sisters, the mothers of Christ.
