Latest / Foul Territory / Ken Rosenthal on Aaron Judge’s return, Max Muncy’s rise, Gausman’s ride, Pat Murphy NL MOY three-peat?

- 0:05Speaker 1: It's the Inside Scoop with FT Senior Insider Ken Rosenthal.
- 0:07Speaker 1: He's back. Aaron Judge returns. Almost exactly 100 days, I
- 0:12Speaker 1: think it was. A few months. Ken, what should we expect?
- 0:16Speaker 2: I have no idea, Scott. And obviously we should expect
- 0:19Speaker 2: Aaron Judge to be some semblance of MVP Aaron Judge. But,
- 0:24Speaker 2: as you said, it's been more than three months. No
- 0:27Speaker 2: rehab assignment. He's going to play right field. So the
- 0:30Speaker 2: first question here is... all right, how are the Yankees
- 0:33Speaker 2: going to build him up in the major league level,
- 0:36Speaker 2: at the major league level? Obviously, he's been doing quite
- 0:39Speaker 2: a bit of activity, baseball and non, in recovering from
- 0:44Speaker 2: his fractured rib. But it's a question of, do you
- 0:47Speaker 2: play him seven innings, then rest him? Do you play
- 0:50Speaker 2: him five, seven the next day, nine the next day?
- 0:53Speaker 2: How this is all going to work, that's going to
- 0:55Speaker 2: be something really, it's going to be quite interesting because
- 0:58Speaker 2: the risk here is without a rehabilitation assignment, without getting
- 1:02Speaker 2: his legs under him, so to speak, and Eric and
- 1:05Speaker 2: AJ can speak to this, the risk is maybe he'll
- 1:07Speaker 2: suffer a leg injury if you're built up too quickly.
- 1:11Speaker 2: And I know it's hard for fans and even reporters
- 1:15Speaker 2: to understand sometimes, but being in your spikes and on
- 1:18Speaker 2: the field and standing there and doing all the things
- 1:21Speaker 2: that players do, that takes some getting used to, and
- 1:25Speaker 2: he hasn't really done that. So I'm expecting him to
- 1:29Speaker 2: be good because he's Aaron Judge. He's always good. I'm
- 1:32Speaker 2: just really interested to see how their buildup goes at
- 1:35Speaker 2: the major league level. Okay.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And that was going to be my question is how
- 1:40Speaker 3: are they going to build them up? Because I remember
- 1:42Speaker 3: we did a, we did a Yankees game. I did
- 1:44Speaker 3: a Yankees game not long ago. And Aaron Boone said, well,
- 1:45Speaker 3: if he doesn't want to go on rehab, we're probably
- 1:47Speaker 3: not going to send them on a rehab and he
- 1:48Speaker 3: can get as a bats officer, Jack, we can, you know,
- 1:51Speaker 3: he can do SIM games. He can take BP, but,
- 1:54Speaker 3: But he said the one thing they are worried about
- 1:55Speaker 3: is getting him on his feet. So did they have
- 1:57Speaker 3: him while they were on the West Coast running out
- 1:59Speaker 3: to the outfield, standing there for like 10 minutes and
- 2:02Speaker 3: running back in, sitting down for 10 minutes just to
- 2:04Speaker 3: try to simulate innings? Did they do anything like that?
- 2:07Speaker 3: Or are they just saying, Aaron, you're going to go
- 2:08Speaker 3: play nine innings the first night and let's hope nothing happens?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Somewhere in between, AJ. It wasn't exactly what you said,
- 2:15Speaker 2: running out and sitting down and doing all that. But
- 2:18Speaker 2: he was on his feet. He was taking BP and
- 2:21Speaker 2: he was doing different things. He was out in the
- 2:23Speaker 2: outfield as well. He has been out in the outfield.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So again, it's not as if he hasn't done anything
- 2:29Speaker 2: and it's not as if he is simply incapable of
- 2:32Speaker 2: doing this.
- 2:33Speaker 4: He can.
- 2:34Speaker 2: But there is a buildup that needs to take place
- 2:36Speaker 2: and When I asked Aaron Boone the other day about this,
- 2:40Speaker 2: I said, okay, you're going to do three innings and
- 2:43Speaker 2: then five innings and seven, and he didn't seem inclined
- 2:46Speaker 2: to go about it in that way. It sounded more
- 2:50Speaker 2: like they would play him seven if possible, maybe even
- 2:54Speaker 2: the full nine, then maybe give him a day off
- 2:57Speaker 2: and just kind of play it by ear. For instance,
- 3:00Speaker 2: if you're in a game tonight where the Yankees lead
- 3:03Speaker 2: 6-1 after the sixth inning, just as an example, Well,
- 3:07Speaker 2: maybe then you get him off his feet so you
- 3:09Speaker 2: have him for the next day for however many innings.
- 3:12Speaker 2: And the one thing that teams have now that really
- 3:16Speaker 2: wasn't available when you guys played was the amount of
- 3:20Speaker 2: information that they have as far as steps that are
- 3:23Speaker 2: being taken, the strength coaches, the things that they check,
- 3:27Speaker 2: all of these different measures. And they can monitor a
- 3:30Speaker 2: player's exertion level. And I imagine some of that's going
- 3:33Speaker 2: to be going on and they'll be checking him constantly.
- 3:37Speaker 4: There's definitely algorithms that I've seen, like the amount of
- 3:40Speaker 4: time that you spend swinging, the amount of time that
- 3:42Speaker 4: you spend running or standing, whatever it is. Did you
- 3:46Speaker 4: get any inclination? You say you talked to Boone, but
- 3:48Speaker 4: anybody from the front office or the team is against this?
- 3:53Speaker 4: Was there some kickback or was it all only judge's choice?
- 3:58Speaker 2: I don't know that everyone with the team is totally
- 4:01Speaker 2: in favor with this or of this because there is
- 4:05Speaker 2: the risk of not having a buildup. So If you
- 4:08Speaker 2: asked Brian Cashman and hooked him up to a lie
- 4:13Speaker 2: detector and said, all right, would you have preferred Aaron
- 4:16Speaker 2: Judge to go on a rehab assignment, even if it
- 4:18Speaker 2: was only for two or three days? My guess is
- 4:21Speaker 2: Cashman would say yes. He obviously is not going to
- 4:24Speaker 2: say that publicly. And a player has rights under the
- 4:27Speaker 2: collective bargaining agreement. A player does not have to go
- 4:30Speaker 2: on a rehab assignment. And that's not just for players
- 4:33Speaker 2: of a certain service level. All players, they don't have
- 4:36Speaker 2: to go. So, When they don't want to go, and
- 4:39Speaker 2: Juan Soto recently returned without one, and Judge did this
- 4:42Speaker 2: a couple of years ago without one, and he had
- 4:43Speaker 2: missed two months.
- 4:44Speaker 4: He was fine.
- 4:45Speaker 2: When a player doesn't want to go, then you have
- 4:47Speaker 2: to work around that and deal with that, and that
- 4:49Speaker 2: is what the Yankees are doing here.
- 4:51Speaker 4: I love that. I love that.
- 4:54Speaker 3: You know, my favorite part of what you said is
- 4:55Speaker 3: there's all these devices, right, that can measure your steps
- 4:58Speaker 3: and your swings and all that. I remember years ago,
- 5:00Speaker 3: the PA was so against wearing these devices. They said,
- 5:03Speaker 3: absolutely nobody ever wear these devices. Now you go into
- 5:06Speaker 3: major league and minor league clubhouse, every person has them on.
- 5:08Speaker 3: It's amazing how times change.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Well, AJ, the fear was it would be used against players.
- 5:15Speaker 4: No, I know. Exactly.
- 5:16Speaker 2: It doesn't seem like that is developed. It seems like
- 5:19Speaker 2: it's with the player's best interest at heart. And you're
- 5:21Speaker 2: trying to monitor the, like I said, the exertion levels.
- 5:24Speaker 2: And it doesn't seem like the fears the union had
- 5:27Speaker 2: have been realized.
- 5:31Speaker 3: The postseason run is heating up for Major League Baseball teams. Kratzy,
- 5:34Speaker 3: you can go see all these games, all the important games.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Whatever your team is, they have a great chance, almost
- 5:40Speaker 3: all of them, at being alive for the postseason. So
- 5:42Speaker 3: you can go on SeatGeek and find whatever team you want,
- 5:44Speaker 3: whatever game you want, whatever matchup you want to try
- 5:47Speaker 3: to help cheer your team on to the postseason.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Yeah, look ahead of your schedule. Go on to SeatGeek. Essentially,
- 5:54Speaker 4: your team's either in the playoffs or the team they're
- 5:56Speaker 4: playing has a chance in the playoffs. So all these
- 5:59Speaker 4: games in September, you got to get on there, get
- 6:02Speaker 4: your green dot, figure out where you're going to sit,
- 6:05Speaker 4: do it ahead of time, and use the codes.
- 6:09Speaker 3: And of course, I have a code for y'all. You
- 6:10Speaker 3: can use code TERRITORY10 for 10% off your next set
- 6:13Speaker 3: of MLB tickets at SeatGeek. That's 10% off MLB tickets
- 6:17Speaker 3: with promo code TERRITORY10. Make sure you click the link
- 6:20Speaker 3: in the description to download the app and have the
- 6:23Speaker 3: code automatically added to your account so you can.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Use it later.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Get ready for MLB postseason by getting the perfect ticket
- 6:29Speaker 3: on SeatGeek.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Agreed. Agreed, Ken.
- 6:31Speaker 3: And it's just funny now. So the Yankees are going
- 6:34Speaker 3: to do this. Obviously, the eyes are on the postseason, right?
- 6:37Speaker 3: So they're going to say, hey, where does he fit
- 6:39Speaker 3: in the lineup? He's going to play the outfield. And
- 6:41Speaker 3: then who loses playing time? Because Garcia, Rice, Ramos, Bellinger, Grisham,
- 6:48Speaker 3: those guys.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Grisham, I guess, not anymore.
- 6:50Speaker 3: But you know what I'm saying?
- 6:51Speaker 4: They're just going to have to deal with it.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Well, Grisham's on the IL, as you just said.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 6:56Speaker 2: So the outfield for the moment will be Judge, Spencer
- 6:59Speaker 2: Jones in center, and Bellinger in left. And... Effectively, Judge replaces, well,
- 7:07Speaker 2: I shouldn't say that. He doesn't replace Grisham. Spencer Jones
- 7:10Speaker 2: effectively replaced Grisham. What they do have is an interesting
- 7:13Speaker 2: scenario against lefties because against lefties, they can't play both
- 7:19Speaker 2: Garcia and Ben Rice because obviously both are in the
- 7:23Speaker 2: DH first base mode. So if you're going to play
- 7:26Speaker 2: Goldschmidt against left-handed pitching, you're sitting one of those guys.
- 7:30Speaker 2: It's a good problem to have, obviously. Too many good players,
- 7:33Speaker 2: and Rice is scalding hot right now. But in the
- 7:36Speaker 2: game we did on Saturday, that was a game started
- 7:39Speaker 2: by Robbie Ray. Luis Garcia Jr. was not in the lineup.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Ben Rice was. They had a great game, and that's
- 7:44Speaker 2: the way they're going to go about it. So they have,
- 7:48Speaker 2: certainly at this point, much more of a full-strength look
- 7:51Speaker 2: to them. They have the DH spot available because Stanton
- 7:54Speaker 2: is not there. But I imagine that at some point,
- 7:59Speaker 2: They will give judge DH days as well and kind
- 8:01Speaker 2: of just go about it in that sense.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Do you know what he did? Cause I didn't end
- 8:07Speaker 4: up looking it up when he came back from his
- 8:09Speaker 4: last rehab. Did you ever look at how he did
- 8:11Speaker 4: and how slow that acclimation back into the big leagues was?
- 8:16Speaker 2: He did really well. He had a good run toward
- 8:18Speaker 2: the end of the season and it was not an issue,
- 8:21Speaker 2: which of course is why I am sure he feels
- 8:25Speaker 2: confident that he can handle this. And, Players know, you
- 8:29Speaker 2: guys know this. They know themselves. They know their bodies.
- 8:32Speaker 2: They know where they are physically at all times. And
- 8:36Speaker 2: having done this before and done it successfully, I asked
- 8:39Speaker 2: at one point, two months versus three months, is that
- 8:42Speaker 2: a difference? And was told, nah, it's not really a
- 8:44Speaker 2: big deal. You miss that amount of time, you're missing
- 8:46Speaker 2: a lot of time. So again, he's done it. He's succeeded.
- 8:51Speaker 2: And from that perspective, there is no reason to believe
- 8:54Speaker 2: that oh my gosh, Aaron Judge can't catch up to
- 8:58Speaker 2: Major League pitching at this point. He'll be okay.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Can you talk to us about what you wrote about
- 9:04Speaker 4: the Kevin Gosman trade and how he and his family
- 9:07Speaker 4: had entrenched themselves in Toronto and ended up losing more
- 9:12Speaker 4: than just his team on the flight when he got traded?
- 9:16Speaker 2: Well, I was talking to Gosman the other night before
- 9:20Speaker 2: the broadcast that we did in Chicago. AJ, we were
- 9:22Speaker 2: part of this. And I asked him, hey, what was
- 9:25Speaker 2: it like? I always ask players, what is it like
- 9:27Speaker 2: the day you get traded? What happened? Because generally speaking,
- 9:30Speaker 2: more often than not, you get good stories out of it.
- 9:33Speaker 2: So I asked Gossman about it, and he said, well,
- 9:36Speaker 2: we were on the flight from Toronto to Houston. It's
- 9:38Speaker 2: the day before the deadline. I'm playing cards with Shane Bieber,
- 9:42Speaker 2: Max Scherzer, and Jeff Hoffman, and I had three of
- 9:45Speaker 2: the worst hands you will ever have. Got crushed in
- 9:48Speaker 2: this card game. Stopped playing cards, and I thought, Nothing
- 9:53Speaker 2: good's gonna happen here. And sure enough, about an hour
- 9:56Speaker 2: later on the flight, he gets summoned to the front
- 9:59Speaker 2: of the plane to talk to manager John Schneider. Schneider
- 10:02Speaker 2: informs him of his trade to the Cubs. And yes,
- 10:05Speaker 2: at that point, Gossman said his first thought was for
- 10:08Speaker 2: his family, his wife, Taylor, and their two young daughters,
- 10:12Speaker 2: because they had grown to love Toronto, as had he.
- 10:16Speaker 2: And they were quite comfortable there. Kevin Gossman was quite
- 10:21Speaker 2: popular there as a player, as well he should have been.
- 10:23Speaker 2: He was a great free agent signing by the Blue Jays.
- 10:25Speaker 2: So it was an emotional moment between he and Schneider
- 10:29Speaker 2: because Schneider, when Gossman first signed with the Jays, was
- 10:33Speaker 2: the bench coach that year. Then he became interim manager.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Then he became manager. So these guys have been through
- 10:39Speaker 2: a lot together, including coming within two outs of winning
- 10:41Speaker 2: the World Series. And again, it was one of those
- 10:45Speaker 2: kind of interesting trade stories that you hear from time
- 10:48Speaker 2: to time.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah, Chicago's real tough to get adjusted to, Ken. Let
- 10:52Speaker 3: me tell you, it's really tough. I mean, if you're
- 10:54Speaker 3: going to go to a city, I mean, Chicago's probably
- 10:57Speaker 3: the worst one you can end up, especially on a
- 10:59Speaker 3: team that's pretty good.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Well, he made the point, AJ. He made the point
- 11:04Speaker 2: that the first series that the Cubs played when he
- 11:07Speaker 2: joined them was at home against the Dodgers. They swept
- 11:11Speaker 2: the Dodgers. It was electrifying at Wrigley, as it often is,
- 11:15Speaker 2: and He said it took him about two days for
- 11:17Speaker 2: him to say, okay, I don't need to be sad.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I can be excited. I'm part of a good thing.
- 11:22Speaker 4: No, I love those stories.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Like you said, I love the, cause it's always random
- 11:25Speaker 3: how guys get traded, what they're doing, especially when it
- 11:27Speaker 3: could be an off day, guys are playing golf, wherever
- 11:30Speaker 3: they're doing.
- 11:30Speaker 4: It's just one of those things.
- 11:32Speaker 3: I've been a part of it where guys found out
- 11:34Speaker 3: not through their agent or through the team, through the
- 11:36Speaker 3: TV or, you know, having to have conversations, whether guys
- 11:39Speaker 3: should take, accept the trade. So, There's a million stories
- 11:43Speaker 3: about that. I love each and every one because they're
- 11:44Speaker 3: so different. But you also wrote something interesting, Ken. Our,
- 11:48Speaker 3: what is it, 90-mile stretch between Milwaukee and Chicago could
- 11:52Speaker 3: define the World Series because both Chicago teams and Milwaukee
- 11:56Speaker 3: have a great chance to make a run to the
- 11:58Speaker 3: World Series. Can you explain more about why the White
- 12:00Speaker 3: Sox are going to make the World Series?
- 12:03Speaker 2: Well, the White Sox are looking good right now, AJ.
- 12:05Speaker 2: It looks like they're going to have At this point, anyway,
- 12:08Speaker 2: they would have the number two seed in the American League.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Do I expect them to get to the World Series
- 12:14Speaker 2: and overcome what look like the three best teams in
- 12:18Speaker 2: the league, the Rays, the Yankees, and the Red Sox?
- 12:20Speaker 2: I don't necessarily expect that. But it's been a great
- 12:23Speaker 2: year for the White Sox. And you know what? In
- 12:26Speaker 2: the American League this year, all things seem possible. Now,
- 12:30Speaker 2: Tampa Bay is strong. The Yankees with Judge will be stronger.
- 12:34Speaker 2: The Red Sox have the possibility of getting Gary Crochet back.
- 12:37Speaker 2: for the postseason in a relief role. And as Crochet
- 12:40Speaker 2: said about his possible return, I'm no Joe Schmo. I
- 12:44Speaker 2: can maybe do some things, which I loved. So it's
- 12:48Speaker 2: going to be an uphill fight for the White Sox
- 12:50Speaker 2: to get to the World Series. I would say the
- 12:52Speaker 2: Cubs and the Brewers are stronger teams and would have
- 12:55Speaker 2: a better chance of getting there. But the playoffs are
- 12:58Speaker 2: the playoffs. And despite what MLB tells us about how
- 13:01Speaker 2: they are always won by the large market teams, who knows?
- 13:05Speaker 2: Maybe this year something will be different.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Dehydration is real, people. So are quince electrolyte stick packs.
- 13:16Speaker 1: All of a sudden, you don't need some big bottle
- 13:18Speaker 1: to carry around. Just these little packets if you suddenly
- 13:21Speaker 1: feel like you need a little hydration. Raspberry salt, delicious.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Citrus salt, my personal favorite. And watermelon salt for those
- 13:28Speaker 1: watermelon lovers out there. Very solid. Just in your water bottle.
- 13:32Speaker 3: I'm a watermelon guy. It's quick, easy in the morning.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Wake up, feeling a little down. Throw some in there,
- 13:38Speaker 3: feeling great. Throw some in there because it'll keep that
- 13:40Speaker 3: high going. So stay on it. It hydrates you because
- 13:43Speaker 3: of that fermented rice, great tasting, and it makes you
- 13:47Speaker 3: feel better.
- 13:48Speaker 1: They're made in the USA, rigorously third-party tested. Give your
- 13:51Speaker 1: body what it really needs to stay hydrated. Quince.com slash
- 13:54Speaker 1: foul gets you free shipping on your order and 365-day returns.
- 13:58Speaker 1: That's quince.com slash foul for free shipping and 365-day returns.

- 14:04Speaker 1: Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure,
- 14:07Speaker 1: or prevent any disease. Ken, can you tell us a
- 14:10Speaker 1: little bit more? I want to ask you an A's
- 14:12Speaker 1: question after this, but to get us into it, a
- 14:15Speaker 1: little bit on your Max Muncy story and the aftermath
- 14:18Speaker 1: that continues many years later. And a new part to
- 14:22Speaker 1: me that I learned about was the position debate that
- 14:25Speaker 1: was going on when he was there.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Right.
- 14:28Speaker 2: And Max Muncy, of course, has gone on to become
- 14:32Speaker 2: a great Los Angeles Dodger. He is second on the
- 14:35Speaker 2: all-time list for Los Angeles Dodgers in home runs. He's
- 14:39Speaker 2: 35 behind Eric Carros for the record. He's 36. Might
- 14:42Speaker 2: be tough to get there, but he might get it.
- 14:44Speaker 2: He might ultimately become the all-time leader for a Los
- 14:48Speaker 2: Angeles Dodgers player in franchise history. That's amazing. And it's
- 14:53Speaker 2: all the more amazing considering that the A's released him
- 14:57Speaker 2: at the end of spring training in 2017. Now, that
- 15:01Speaker 2: item I wrote about today deals with the A's former
- 15:04Speaker 2: general manager, David Forrest, approaching Muncie when the Dodgers were
- 15:07Speaker 2: in Sacramento this year. and saying, hey, we really blew
- 15:10Speaker 2: it with that decision. And Muncy's gracious about it. He's like, hey,
- 15:14Speaker 2: I didn't give them much of a chance to make
- 15:17Speaker 2: a different decision. But the one thing he said was
- 15:20Speaker 2: that they felt he didn't have a position. And he said,
- 15:24Speaker 2: they're right. I didn't have a position then. I bounced
- 15:27Speaker 2: all over the place, left, right, first, second, and third, DHing,
- 15:31Speaker 2: of course, as well. And it never really gave him
- 15:34Speaker 2: a chance to get settled. So In that sense, it
- 15:38Speaker 2: was one of those situations where they got impatient with
- 15:40Speaker 2: him offensively because he wasn't the hitter that he became.
- 15:44Speaker 2: And he really wasn't set at any one spot. So
- 15:47Speaker 2: they had other players ahead of him, and they let
- 15:49Speaker 2: him go. And credit to Max Muncy for becoming the
- 15:53Speaker 2: player that he has become with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 15:56Speaker 2: And he's a three-time World Series champion. He's a three-time All-Star,
- 16:00Speaker 2: and he's still doing big things for that team.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Oh, and you count your blessings that they let you
- 16:07Speaker 1: go and it didn't work out because you just don't
- 16:09Speaker 1: know what your future looks like, even if the A's, say,
- 16:11Speaker 1: give you a little bit more PT or give you
- 16:13Speaker 1: the position that you're looking for. It's all worked out
- 16:15Speaker 1: really nicely for Max. My question for you, my last one,
- 16:18Speaker 1: is on the A's. So this has been a brutal year, right?
- 16:21Speaker 1: And they're terrible at home and all of that. Suddenly
- 16:23Speaker 1: they're Kind of playing a little well down the stretch here.
- 16:27Speaker 1: And I think the most shocking part of the Labor
- 16:29Speaker 1: Day weekend for me was what they did to the
- 16:31Speaker 1: Mariners in those first few games. We spoke for weeks
- 16:35Speaker 1: about how the Mariners were about to enter a soft
- 16:37Speaker 1: part of the schedule. And AJ is going to kill
- 16:39Speaker 1: me for asking this question because I'm big on schedule watching.
- 16:42Speaker 1: They looked better than the Mariners.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Yeah. And the fallacy of schedule watching is that sometimes
- 16:51Speaker 2: this can happen. And we all do it. I certainly
- 16:55Speaker 2: do it. And, for instance, the Dodgers, the rest of
- 16:58Speaker 2: the way, have a very easy schedule on paper. They
- 17:02Speaker 2: should be well positioned to get that number two seed
- 17:05Speaker 2: from Atlanta in the National League. Just look at the schedule.
- 17:08Speaker 2: And the Nationals, right now, we talk about schedule. The Nationals,
- 17:12Speaker 2: since the deadline, have not been the same team. Traded
- 17:15Speaker 2: Foster Griffin, traded Curtis Meade. They just have not been
- 17:19Speaker 2: the same. And, of course, Garcia Jr., So when you
- 17:23Speaker 2: look at schedules and you count wins, it doesn't always
- 17:27Speaker 2: work out that way. But at the same time, the
- 17:30Speaker 2: reason it doesn't work out that way is because teams
- 17:33Speaker 2: like the A's, like the Mets right now, all these
- 17:38Speaker 2: teams that are out of it, the Cincinnati Reds are
- 17:40Speaker 2: playing better. Well, it's a different story when the pressure
- 17:43Speaker 2: is off and teams start performing. And there's that old adage, too,
- 17:48Speaker 2: never trust what you see in spring training and never
- 17:51Speaker 2: trust what you see in September training. from some of
- 17:53Speaker 2: these players and teams. And that's worth keeping in mind
- 17:57Speaker 2: as well.
- 17:57Speaker 4: All right, Ken, do we need to make a rule
- 18:00Speaker 4: for writers that they can't select a manager of the year,
- 18:04Speaker 4: three straight years, or if Pat Murphy continues to do
- 18:08Speaker 4: what he does, it's just going to be the Pat
- 18:09Speaker 4: Murphy manager of the year award in the NL.
- 18:13Speaker 2: There should be no rule ever restricting writers from picking
- 18:17Speaker 2: whoever they want. And, My fear always with awards when
- 18:21Speaker 2: guys are on a roll, Otani in the MVP races
- 18:24Speaker 2: is a good example of this. If he's deserving of MVP,
- 18:28Speaker 2: then enough voter fatigue that you sometimes hear about, he
- 18:31Speaker 2: should win MVP. Murphy, it's the same thing with the Brewers.
- 18:35Speaker 2: This team has exceeded expectations once again. They very well
- 18:40Speaker 2: could end up with the best record in franchise history.
- 18:44Speaker 2: This is without Quinn Priester, without Brandon Woodruff, with the
- 18:47Speaker 2: youngest pitching staff in the major leagues. There are a
- 18:50Speaker 2: lot of reasons that you could say Pat Murphy is
- 18:53Speaker 2: again deserving of Manager of the Year. It would be
- 18:56Speaker 2: three straight. No manager has ever won three straight. Now,
- 19:00Speaker 2: to make the same case, or a case, I should say,
- 19:03Speaker 2: for Don Mattingly, You can make a case, certainly, for
- 19:05Speaker 2: Walt Weiss. Maybe even Tory Lavello, if the Diamondbacks get
- 19:08Speaker 2: there after all they've been through. I didn't mention him
- 19:11Speaker 2: in my column, but perhaps should have. Maybe even Craig Stammen,
- 19:14Speaker 2: if the Padres get there after what they've been through.
- 19:16Speaker 2: But it seems to me that if the Brewers get
- 19:19Speaker 2: to 98-99 wins, franchise record, even 100, Murphy's going to
- 19:24Speaker 2: be a pretty strong candidate yet again. And You just
- 19:28Speaker 2: don't vote for someone else because I'm tired of voting
- 19:31Speaker 2: for that guy. That's ridiculous. That is not what we
- 19:33Speaker 2: should do as voting members.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I feel like Murph is not embarrassed, but he's trying
- 19:39Speaker 1: to be humble about it.
- 19:40Speaker 2: He's like, stop. Stop voting for me.
- 19:42Speaker 1: It's the players. It's the organization, the ivory tower, all
- 19:46Speaker 1: his terminology. But we might get another Murph speech. Ken,
- 19:49Speaker 1: good stuff. Good to see you. see you we'll talk
