- 0:02Speaker 1: We come to this place for magic. We come to
- 0:05Speaker 1: a MC feed is to laugh, to cry, to care,
- 0:10Speaker 1: because we need that, all of us, that indescribable feeling
- 0:14Speaker 1: we get when the lights begin to deem and we
- 0:17Speaker 1: go somewhere we've never been before, not just entertained, but
- 0:22Speaker 1: somehow reborn. Take together. Okay, for the virgins, they have
- 0:32Speaker 1: to know that we were in the theater getting ready
- 0:35Speaker 1: to see Batman, and of course Rose and I just
- 0:37Speaker 1: you know, clutch each other just fully anticipating the Nicole
- 0:41Speaker 1: Kidman anti theaters and when it started there were definitely
- 0:45Speaker 1: some other queers in the theater because they applauded when
- 0:49Speaker 1: as soon as Nicole Kidman's the high heel hit the
- 0:52Speaker 1: ground hit. And then towards the end when Nicole Kidman says,
- 0:59Speaker 1: because here they are, the gaze at the back of
- 1:02Speaker 1: the theater wet. They are perfect units, perfect. It was
- 1:05Speaker 1: the best hone to set. It was. They were queering
- 1:08Speaker 1: the space. They were queering the space, as if Batman
- 1:12Speaker 1: isn't queer enough. All of this is to say that
- 1:14Speaker 1: today we're talking about Batman, both the new film The
- 1:18Speaker 1: Batman starring Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz and also the
- 1:23Speaker 1: Batman and people that Mexicans, that the bad people of yesteryear.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Because this is like a virgin the show where we
- 1:33Speaker 1: give yesterday's pop culture today's takes. I'm Rose, damn you
- 1:37Speaker 1: and I'm fran Toronto, and uh, we are going to
- 1:40Speaker 1: be diving into the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher eras
- 1:45Speaker 1: of Batman. But unlike Joel Schumacher, we will not be
- 1:48Speaker 1: discussing the ten thousand to twenty thousand people we have
- 1:52Speaker 1: slept with. Speak for yourself, babe, this is gonna be
- 1:58Speaker 1: this is This is a podcast first and foremost about
- 2:00Speaker 1: taking loads, taking an honor of Joel Schumacher ten to
- 2:04Speaker 1: twenty thousand loads, which is a really big gap to
- 2:07Speaker 1: Joel Schumacher's twenty thousand load weekends. But first, uh, there's
- 2:13Speaker 1: a whole other pile of garbage we have to sift
- 2:16Speaker 1: through from the week's news and pop culture mama Let's research.
- 2:22Speaker 1: As Gina Rodriguez one said, well, the most infuriating thing
- 2:30Speaker 1: that could have happened on the Drag Race episode on
- 2:33Speaker 1: Friday did happen. And I'm not just talking about the
- 2:36Speaker 1: fact that Apple TV Plus didn't add the episode for
- 2:40Speaker 1: a full forty eight hours after it premiered. Um, there
- 2:44Speaker 1: was a double save, which it doesn't matter who it is.
- 2:48Speaker 1: It could be the best drag queens who have ever
- 2:51Speaker 1: competed on the show. It could be two people I
- 2:53Speaker 1: know personally, I never want two people to be saved ever.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I want a double elimination. When I saw the double
- 3:01Speaker 1: save this week, I just I could hear and and
- 3:04Speaker 1: Crystal clearly imagine you destroying your furniture and your own home.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Just you told me what I saw you on Saturday.
- 3:11Speaker 1: You asked if i'd seen Drag Race set and I
- 3:13Speaker 1: said no, and he said, oh, you're gonna hate You're
- 3:15Speaker 1: gonna hate it. They're gonna be so mad. Um. Yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 1: there's nothing that's really investing me in this season of
- 3:21Speaker 1: Drag Race anymore in drag Race UK. Honestly, I just
- 3:25Speaker 1: want willow Hill to win so we can all go home.
- 3:28Speaker 1: The fatigue is real. Yeah, I think what's happening with
- 3:32Speaker 1: willow Hill is like so exciting, Like what a winner,
- 3:36Speaker 1: what a fierce competitor. I think that, you know, Algeria
- 3:39Speaker 1: is kind of fading into the middling ground territory. I'm
- 3:46Speaker 1: just and I think that this double save was just
- 3:49Speaker 1: like where are the steaks? Girls? Like where is like
- 3:52Speaker 1: my personal stake in this? And similarly with drag Race
- 3:55Speaker 1: UK Versus the World, it's like I don't really care
- 3:59Speaker 1: about who wins anymore, like it would be nice and
- 4:03Speaker 1: absolutely absolutely not, Like obviously this episode is going to
- 4:07Speaker 1: come out a full two days after the finale, so
- 4:10Speaker 1: none of none of this like even matters. But none
- 4:14Speaker 1: of it matters anyway because as soon as Pangina was eliminated,
- 4:18Speaker 1: I lost all interest in UK Versus the World. Yeah, oh,
- 4:21Speaker 1: did you see that Willow Hill came out as trans? Yes?
- 4:24Speaker 1: And I saw Herod's tweet The Herods Herod's tweet that
- 4:31Speaker 1: was like RuPaul realizing she cast four women on drag
- 4:35Speaker 1: Race and it's like the meme of the woman destroying
- 4:37Speaker 1: her house. Um yeah, I feel like some someone got
- 4:41Speaker 1: fired on the ranch for that one. Yeah, the dolls
- 4:43Speaker 1: are dolling because now we have it was started with
- 4:47Speaker 1: Carrie and corn Bread, then Jasmine, then Willow and I
- 4:52Speaker 1: guess Bosco as well, who I think is out as
- 4:55Speaker 1: trans feminine trans. So that's like that's like five how
- 4:59Speaker 1: many when were in this cast? I don't know. Also,
- 5:03Speaker 1: how are we still not at Snatch Game? And when
- 5:07Speaker 1: they said next week Snatch Game, I was like, I
- 5:10Speaker 1: was like yeah, I was like how And I am
- 5:16Speaker 1: like such a lover of drag Race, like unlike you, I,
- 5:20Speaker 1: I really do like it is something that I will
- 5:23Speaker 1: always always be excited to sit down and watch. But like, man,
- 5:29Speaker 1: I think that they're the production and like how these
- 5:32Speaker 1: seasons are spinning out is like not really keeping me
- 5:36Speaker 1: plugged into the characters. But anyways, willow Hill Supremacy yea.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I will also say last week something that I was
- 5:44Speaker 1: also too sick and dehydrated and exhausted to discuss, probably
- 5:51Speaker 1: to your delight, was the Euphoria finale. I'm so okay,
- 5:55Speaker 1: let let me go make a copee while this all
- 5:59Speaker 1: start talking to Oh my god, so now put your
- 6:04Speaker 1: headphones back on. She's literally leaving right now. Come on, Rose,
- 6:09Speaker 1: we need to make the podcast but for the virgins,
- 6:12Speaker 1: because I know there are a lot of virgins who
- 6:14Speaker 1: watch Euphoria, which is why it's worth discussing, and also
- 6:18Speaker 1: just like it's an amazing show to you. To me,
- 6:22Speaker 1: I felt like the finale was great, but I felt
- 6:30Speaker 1: like the play within a play was better. I felt
- 6:33Speaker 1: like the play within a play did was so successful
- 6:36Speaker 1: at making fun of Euphoria as a show, like making
- 6:40Speaker 1: fun of all the things that are really extreme about
- 6:44Speaker 1: literally euphoria the TV show, from the homo eroticism of
- 6:49Speaker 1: Nate to like how slutty all of these characters are too,
- 6:54Speaker 1: the really high stakes drama. Like it actually kind of
- 6:58Speaker 1: brought the show back to you. Even though obviously everyone's saying,
- 7:02Speaker 1: like the budget of this play is like absolutely crazy,
- 7:05Speaker 1: I felt like it was totally earned because, um, I
- 7:10Speaker 1: don't know when I you into an art school, I
- 7:12Speaker 1: went to an extremely arts driven school. Um, we had
- 7:16Speaker 1: sets that we're on like you know, macinated like rotators,
- 7:21Speaker 1: like we we and like I know that so did
- 7:24Speaker 1: we all, although we also did the thing a lot
- 7:26Speaker 1: where you have, um, one of those big rolling staircases
- 7:30Speaker 1: that that like stand in for for every possible type
- 7:34Speaker 1: of structure or whatever happened. Yeah, And that's the thing is,
- 7:39Speaker 1: like I think our high school imaginations are so active
- 7:43Speaker 1: that like our heightened sense of reality makes that experience
- 7:48Speaker 1: like like this is the best thing that's ever happening,
- 7:51Speaker 1: Like in our brains, it's like so so brilliant and
- 7:55Speaker 1: gorgeous and amazing, but like, when you actually look at it,
- 7:57Speaker 1: it's like a bunch of plywood painted by you know,
- 8:00Speaker 1: kids that were in detention, not in my school. You
- 8:03Speaker 1: had to, like, you had to sign up to paint
- 8:05Speaker 1: those sides. We had a shop class, but there weren't
- 8:07Speaker 1: enough people signed up for shop and so I think
- 8:09Speaker 1: detention kids also had to make our stage sets. But yeah,
- 8:14Speaker 1: I won't harpen it anymore other than to say that
- 8:17Speaker 1: I felt like all the empathy that I was like
- 8:20Speaker 1: led to feel about Lexi, I really did not feel
- 8:23Speaker 1: for this whole season until her play, and then I
- 8:26Speaker 1: felt like her play totally earned all of this character
- 8:30Speaker 1: development that we had been witnessing. And yeah, I just
- 8:34Speaker 1: totally enjoyed it, even if if we love to see
- 8:36Speaker 1: him a nepotism baby succeeding good from Apata. Were you,
- 8:41Speaker 1: I guess satisfied with the end of the season. I
- 8:45Speaker 1: felt like there was an over emphasis on Lexi in
- 8:50Speaker 1: the last half of the finale. I kind of wanted
- 8:53Speaker 1: to go back to more core characters um but that
- 8:57Speaker 1: the episode really landed with Lexians and Day. But overall,
- 9:01Speaker 1: the big takeaways honestly are one that Nate has a
- 9:05Speaker 1: recurring nightmare that he's getting fucked by his dad. They
- 9:08Speaker 1: shall flash of it at some point and unfortunately, um
- 9:12Speaker 1: it was it was kind of hot. And and the
- 9:14Speaker 1: other thing was that did you know the Alexa Demi
- 9:17Speaker 1: it's actually pronounced Alexa Demi. I didn't, but I guess
- 9:23Speaker 1: like she was born in like nineteen twenties barrets, so
- 9:28Speaker 1: that makes sense, right, Yeah, yeah, when she co wrote
- 9:31Speaker 1: the Declaration of Independence, she said it's Demi, not which
- 9:38Speaker 1: she emerged from the Primordials when she actually cracked open
- 9:43Speaker 1: the continents from from the from Alexa Alexa Demi was
- 9:54Speaker 1: actually the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. Absolutely, But yeah,
- 10:01Speaker 1: that that those are all of my euphoria not so
- 10:04Speaker 1: hot takes that are you know? Weeks late? Great, So
- 10:07Speaker 1: very excited to not ever talk about Euphoria again. And
- 10:10Speaker 1: like there's not going to be another season anytime soon, right, Well,
- 10:15Speaker 1: this second season we had to wait for a really
- 10:17Speaker 1: long time because of the pandemic, so we actually might
- 10:20Speaker 1: get a third season sooner than you think, babe. Oh god,
- 10:23Speaker 1: that's horrible. Well, I spent my Sunday night watching Fresh,
- 10:30Speaker 1: which is a new Hulu movie starring Sebastian Stand a
- 10:35Speaker 1: k a. The Winter Soldier and Daisy Edgar Jones, who
- 10:40Speaker 1: was in Normal People The Sally Rooney TV Show with
- 10:46Speaker 1: Phoebe Bridgers boyfriend. And I loved it. I had like
- 10:50Speaker 1: been wanting to watch it, and then I saw a
- 10:52Speaker 1: TikTok where someone was reviewing it and saying it was
- 10:54Speaker 1: really good but that the ending was bad. And I
- 10:56Speaker 1: watched the movie and like was waiting for the ending
- 10:58Speaker 1: to be bad, and it like it really wasn't. I
- 11:01Speaker 1: actually really liked the ending. So don't trust everything you
- 11:04Speaker 1: see on TikTok. But so it is about this girl
- 11:09Speaker 1: who is kind of a loner and she means she's
- 11:13Speaker 1: like having all these horrible tender dates and then meets
- 11:16Speaker 1: Sebastian stand in a grocery store and they start dating
- 11:21Speaker 1: and then he asked if she wants to go away
- 11:24Speaker 1: for the weekend, and they go to his house upstate
- 11:28Speaker 1: and he said that he's a doctor, and like she
- 11:31Speaker 1: he takes her to his house and drugs her and
- 11:34Speaker 1: she wakes up chained up in his basement because he
- 11:38Speaker 1: sells human flesh on the black market to really wealthy people.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Is this like a gooey gory kind of horror? Is
- 11:45Speaker 1: it more art artful kind of It's like it's actually
- 11:49Speaker 1: like pretty funny and it's not too graphic, Like I
- 11:53Speaker 1: would not have gotten funny from what you describe. No,
- 11:56Speaker 1: it's funny. It loves Like. One of the interesting things
- 11:59Speaker 1: was that the title card of the movie doesn't happen
- 12:03Speaker 1: for like twenty minutes, so like you get there full
- 12:07Speaker 1: like rum com you know, meet cute dating, blah blah blah,
- 12:12Speaker 1: and then like twenty minutes in when she wakes up
- 12:15Speaker 1: chained up in the basement, then like the title card
- 12:17Speaker 1: and the credits come on, so it's like now the
- 12:20Speaker 1: movie has actually started. Um. The gore is not too graphic. Um.
- 12:25Speaker 1: There's one scene where he cuts her ass off because
- 12:31Speaker 1: she's been bad, um, and you kind of see it.
- 12:36Speaker 1: And there's obviously a lot of scenes of him like
- 12:40Speaker 1: carving up human flesh and eating it. But you know,
- 12:43Speaker 1: there's one scene where he like walks in from a
- 12:46Speaker 1: run and you know how like some people have things
- 12:49Speaker 1: of purshudo that are like it just like like a
- 12:53Speaker 1: wheel in their kitchen. He has like a human leg
- 12:56Speaker 1: that he just like takes a little sliver or not
- 12:59Speaker 1: an Erico ham woman. Yeah, it's it's very that. Yeah,
- 13:05Speaker 1: but I really liked it. I mean, obviously I like
- 13:08Speaker 1: a dark, twisted, beautiful fantasy. It reminds me a little
- 13:10Speaker 1: bit of Perfume. Do you remember that book slash movie. Yeah.
- 13:13Speaker 1: It also reminded me a lot of my favorite book
- 13:17Speaker 1: from last year, A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers,
- 13:20Speaker 1: which is also about cannibalism and is like sort of funny.
- 13:23Speaker 1: There's not a single cannibal cultural object that will escape you,
- 13:26Speaker 1: that's for sure, absolutely not. But um Sebastian stand was
- 13:30Speaker 1: really good in it. He was very like I think
- 13:33Speaker 1: I forgot from him playing a superhero for so long
- 13:36Speaker 1: that he is very good at being a like douche villain.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Allah his turn on Gossip Girl, and he was very
- 13:42Speaker 1: sinister but very hot. Oh my god, he could take
- 13:45Speaker 1: a bite out of me anytime. We cannibals are hot,
- 13:49Speaker 1: just like cannibals. Cannibals are hot. And I thought the
- 13:52Speaker 1: ending was very satisfying. I really liked it. Definitely would recommend.
- 13:58Speaker 1: It's just like, you know, fun little movie, and it's
- 14:01Speaker 1: on Hulu. Why not. The two satisfying things that I
- 14:05Speaker 1: watched in my flu hayes were Shiva Baby very belated,
- 14:09Speaker 1: but I didn't realize that it was streamable on HBO Max.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Also something that I unfortunately left off of my best
- 14:16Speaker 1: of Wow, that makes complete sense because it felt like
- 14:21Speaker 1: you wrote it, um. But the gist is almost graduating
- 14:25Speaker 1: from college. Girl is like at a shiva and she
- 14:29Speaker 1: sees her sugar daddy who she didn't know was married
- 14:32Speaker 1: and has a kid, and also her ex girlfriend. And
- 14:35Speaker 1: the story is fully contained in that house of the Shiva,
- 14:38Speaker 1: which is I think a brilliant conceit. It's a really
- 14:41Speaker 1: great movie. We love Rachel Snatt also stars Diana a Gronk,
- 14:45Speaker 1: a Taylor Swiss rumored ex girlfriend. No wait really, I
- 14:50Speaker 1: didn't know that. In music news, Florence and the Machine
- 14:54Speaker 1: dropped another song today, which was and it's it's like
- 14:58Speaker 1: under two minutes. It's just like a little little tease.
- 15:02Speaker 1: And I am eating my words of saying that Florence
- 15:06Speaker 1: was doing when all the other girls weren't by putting
- 15:09Speaker 1: out a four minute song last week. Well, this one's
- 15:12Speaker 1: for the talk. Yeah, I don't I don't know if
- 15:14Speaker 1: this one's going to wind up as a TikTok sound yeah,
- 15:17Speaker 1: you don't think that breath the yodeling will transcend to
- 15:20Speaker 1: the TikTok generation. Okay, let's not. Let's not. I'm not
- 15:24Speaker 1: being reductive. I say that as a compliment. Literally, like
- 15:27Speaker 1: you're all of your favorite artists are breathy yodelers, Bush,
- 15:32Speaker 1: Fiona Apple, Florence welch Um, Alanis Morrissa, like literally all
- 15:38Speaker 1: of them. Okay, you might, you might have a point.
- 15:41Speaker 1: You might have. The other movie that I wanted to
- 15:44Speaker 1: quickly endorse, just because I didn't think I would be
- 15:47Speaker 1: endorsing this movie was three months starring Choice Von and
- 15:51Speaker 1: Judy Greer. Thank God, another really simple slice of life
- 15:55Speaker 1: movie about a guy who is like waiting to find
- 16:00Speaker 1: if he has HV or not, which usually takes three
- 16:02Speaker 1: months time after you've been exposed. A movie made a
- 16:07Speaker 1: decade too late, But like, I feel like that's not
- 16:10Speaker 1: the fall of the movie. I'm sure that it was
- 16:12Speaker 1: pitched like ten years ago um and has taken this
- 16:15Speaker 1: long to get created. But I just wasn't prepared to
- 16:17Speaker 1: like the movie because I felt like the conceit was
- 16:20Speaker 1: kind of I mean, it sounds off off paper, like
- 16:23Speaker 1: a little basic, but the characters are so rich and
- 16:28Speaker 1: I did ugly cry because there's some really good grandma
- 16:31Speaker 1: stuff in it, um and I love Grandma content um
- 16:35Speaker 1: and the I think the emotions and relationships of each
- 16:39Speaker 1: character were so um real to me, Like I felt
- 16:43Speaker 1: like I was totally back in high school. So I
- 16:45Speaker 1: do recommend it. It's on Paramount plus. I did have
- 16:48Speaker 1: to borrow someone else's Paramount plus password, but you can
- 16:52Speaker 1: go ahead and do that too, and it's definitely worth it.
- 16:54Speaker 1: I won't know, I'm saying you the Virgins. So today
- 17:13Speaker 1: we're talking about Batman because last night we saw the Batman. Oh,
- 17:18Speaker 1: it's the Batman. It's the Batman. That's a stylistic choice,
- 17:21Speaker 1: of course, of course, um and I think we had both.
- 17:26Speaker 1: How did you go into this movie? Like you had
- 17:28Speaker 1: seen reviews and stuff? But yeah, I was thinking. I
- 17:30Speaker 1: was very excited. I've been excited since we saw the
- 17:34Speaker 1: first set photos of Zoe, Um and Robert, but like
- 17:38Speaker 1: mainly Zoe, Zoe was a moment. Um. Yeah, I was excited.
- 17:43Speaker 1: I've never been like Batman. I'm not like a Batman girl,
- 17:48Speaker 1: like right or die of I think of all the superheroes,
- 17:51Speaker 1: not necessarily my faith, but this one I was very
- 17:55Speaker 1: excited for because I like, I guess like in recent years,
- 17:59Speaker 1: bat And has been even less of the superhero that
- 18:02Speaker 1: I've been interested in. And I think that's like when
- 18:04Speaker 1: bad when when when Ben Affleck's playing him, I'm just
- 18:08Speaker 1: it's not the vibe. And I think not the vibe
- 18:10Speaker 1: with the kind of the ramping up of the m
- 18:12Speaker 1: c U in general, it just requires so much of
- 18:15Speaker 1: our kind of cultural attention. Of course, something as big
- 18:18Speaker 1: as Batman could even fade into the distance. And I
- 18:20Speaker 1: also I think it's probably because I just like I
- 18:22Speaker 1: am not really interested in the d C movies. UM,
- 18:27Speaker 1: So I was happy for something that seemed like a
- 18:30Speaker 1: soft reboot of that or I guess a hard reboot man.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Um And I really liked the movie shockingly, I mean
- 18:38Speaker 1: maybe not shockingly, but I went into it with virtually
- 18:41Speaker 1: no expectations, Like all my expectations were for Zoe, and
- 18:45Speaker 1: the rest of the movie was kind of inconsequential to me.
- 18:48Speaker 1: And you know, you and I agree that this movie,
- 18:51Speaker 1: I mean, why is it three hours long? Like? Why?
- 18:53Speaker 1: That's the first thing that that you should know, um,
- 18:56Speaker 1: everyone listening is that this movie is three hours long,
- 19:00Speaker 1: and it fields three hours, not in a bad way.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I did not pee once. Yes, I could not, could never,
- 19:07Speaker 1: although I was pissing in my mind the whole time,
- 19:11Speaker 1: I was pissing spiritually. But it's very long, and if
- 19:17Speaker 1: you do need to take a pea break, I would
- 19:20Speaker 1: suggest going during the car chase, I think because it's
- 19:23Speaker 1: in the trailer and you can skip it. They did
- 19:26Speaker 1: ruin kind of one of the best scenes of the movie.
- 19:29Speaker 1: They really overexposed that that car chase, which I thought
- 19:32Speaker 1: was so amazing to watch in theaters. It was very fun.
- 19:34Speaker 1: But but you can definitely if you have to pee,
- 19:37Speaker 1: pe during that. If I were to recommend a pre
- 19:39Speaker 1: pea break, I would say in the last third of
- 19:41Speaker 1: the movie, you know, there's a lot you can't make
- 19:43Speaker 1: it that long. If like the car chase is like
- 19:45Speaker 1: a good midway points on practical reasons, maybe it doesn't
- 19:48Speaker 1: make sense. However, in the last third of the movie,
- 19:51Speaker 1: there is a lot of you know, my least favorite
- 19:53Speaker 1: parts of the movie, which is a room where just
- 19:55Speaker 1: two people are talking and there's a lot of Batman
- 19:58Speaker 1: in the Yeah, said, did go on for kind of
- 20:01Speaker 1: a long and also, um, well, well I don't want
- 20:04Speaker 1: to get into the nitty gritty of the plot, but
- 20:05Speaker 1: basically there's a lot of exposition that happens the last
- 20:07Speaker 1: they're to kind of tie together a few missing parts
- 20:10Speaker 1: of this riddle, if you will. We don't have to
- 20:12Speaker 1: get into like the specifics of the plot, but I
- 20:14Speaker 1: think a general overview is that this is a Batman
- 20:18Speaker 1: movie that takes place two years into Bruce Wayne's new
- 20:24Speaker 1: career as a vigilante masked crusader who everyone he like
- 20:30Speaker 1: always refers to himself as Vengeance. UM, so he's like
- 20:35Speaker 1: I been around and for like what a few years,
- 20:39Speaker 1: for two years, And I think one of the things
- 20:43Speaker 1: that I liked the most about this movie was that
- 20:46Speaker 1: it's not an origin story, but this is not a
- 20:51Speaker 1: fully realized Batman, So you're like dropped into his career
- 20:59Speaker 1: of crime fighting, but he's still not the best at it.
- 21:02Speaker 1: He makes a lot of mistakes. One of my favorite
- 21:04Speaker 1: moments of the movie is actually when the car chase
- 21:07Speaker 1: is about to happen, Batman is like busting up a
- 21:11Speaker 1: drug deal and he's trying to like intimidate the penguin
- 21:16Speaker 1: by revving up the Batmobile, and then just as he's
- 21:19Speaker 1: about to like go after him the Batmobile stalls and
- 21:23Speaker 1: it's like very funny and also like, I just like
- 21:26Speaker 1: the idea that he hasn't got his ship figured out.
- 21:29Speaker 1: It was. It was also a nice little spin on
- 21:32Speaker 1: the Batmobile reveal, which is something that happens in almost
- 21:35Speaker 1: all of the franchises, Like and you know, I liked
- 21:38Speaker 1: that it twisted the ways that we saw that. And
- 21:41Speaker 1: this batmobile did kind of look like um, the that
- 21:45Speaker 1: like Elon Musk tesla, you know, like the one that
- 21:49Speaker 1: he was driving around New York with Grimes in the back. No,
- 21:53Speaker 1: it was also reminiscent of kind of the tank batmobile
- 21:55Speaker 1: that was. No, let's not let's own or as he
- 22:00Speaker 1: Lex Luthor, if Elon Musk is Batman and Grimes is Madonna?
- 22:04Speaker 1: Did you see the Grimes audition for the Madonna biopic?
- 22:06Speaker 1: Is Grimes cut woman? Or maybe Grimes is poison Ivy?
- 22:11Speaker 1: Grimes would be poithon Ivy, but like would completely betray
- 22:15Speaker 1: her kind of lady freed what I pulled her plug
- 22:19Speaker 1: this other one woman though? Well, speaking of Grimes, Batman
- 22:25Speaker 1: was kind of rocking Grimes makeup. Let's start with the
- 22:28Speaker 1: emo pica. Yeah, what do you think she was using?
- 22:31Speaker 1: My eye definitely. I did like that. There was one
- 22:33Speaker 1: scene where he was putting the makeup on I want
- 22:36Speaker 1: the full tutorial, Yeah, as a smudgy Pat McGrath kind
- 22:39Speaker 1: of like dark under eye moment um. One of the
- 22:44Speaker 1: first things that we reacted to in this movie was
- 22:47Speaker 1: how emo he was. The emoification of Robert Pattinson. Not
- 22:51Speaker 1: that this is the first time he's been email exactly,
- 22:54Speaker 1: you know, well that's kind of why he was giving
- 22:56Speaker 1: very much. I chimed in with the haven't you people
- 22:58Speaker 1: ever heard of closing the goddamn door? You know? Yeah,
- 23:01Speaker 1: the penguin comes and he goes, is it to me
- 23:03Speaker 1: that makes you sweatin um? Yeah, I I feel like
- 23:07Speaker 1: you and I immediately were like, this is like so
- 23:10Speaker 1: like overtly emo, Like it's not you and I are
- 23:13Speaker 1: very like, you know, uh, we like to be ir
- 23:15Speaker 1: reverend in our takes and like kind of digesting of
- 23:18Speaker 1: like superhero movies, but it really is explicitly like there
- 23:21Speaker 1: was this kind of what was the song that was
- 23:23Speaker 1: playing when we first see there? It was a Nirvana
- 23:28Speaker 1: song and he's got the smudgy makeup and like Robert
- 23:30Speaker 1: Pattinson already has that like kind of sensitive, like fragile
- 23:35Speaker 1: guy kind of thing. I think this was the most
- 23:38Speaker 1: punk Batman had a cyberpunk vibe, especially in the scenes
- 23:43Speaker 1: that took place in Penguin's Club, which I want to
- 23:47Speaker 1: go to that club two thousand and fourteen. Me would
- 23:50Speaker 1: have lived in that club. Yes, I loved I mean
- 23:53Speaker 1: the Penguin. Let's get into the Penguin as well, because
- 23:55Speaker 1: like I love the club Penguin. Colin Farrell in a
- 23:58Speaker 1: fat suit. Unfortunately, Win Farrell in a fat suit? Why
- 24:01Speaker 1: Hollywood persists in giving you know, prestige actors fat suits.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Speaking of I just have to ask, have you ever
- 24:08Speaker 1: seen Colin Farrell's sex tape. I didn't even know that existing.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Oh my god, girl, you have to watch it. He's
- 24:14Speaker 1: like he's going down on this girl. He's like I
- 24:17Speaker 1: could eat this pushing for breakfast, say that he does
- 24:21Speaker 1: very famously. I didn't know that. Yeah, wow, who I
- 24:25Speaker 1: mean not to not to like glorify in someone's privacy
- 24:28Speaker 1: being invaded, but like that's it's it's a very good
- 24:32Speaker 1: sex tape. Something. Okay, we're jimming around a lot, But
- 24:35Speaker 1: like I have to say about the Penguin of it
- 24:37Speaker 1: all that like Colin Farrell is basically doing a Danny
- 24:41Speaker 1: de Vito impression. I think it's hard to do the
- 24:44Speaker 1: penguin and not do a Danny de Vito impression, but
- 24:47Speaker 1: was still unfortunately amazing, so good, so good, so made
- 24:51Speaker 1: us laugh out loud so many times. And um, I
- 24:54Speaker 1: will say it is kind of um disorienting to have
- 24:58Speaker 1: Colin Farrell where this fat suit and half like these
- 25:01Speaker 1: like you know, decrepit scars all over his face, but
- 25:04Speaker 1: then he has his like gooey dreamboat eyes. Still very
- 25:08Speaker 1: distract You did clock that maybe the penguin was gay
- 25:11Speaker 1: because of the club he owned and also the TWINKSI employers. Yes,
- 25:15Speaker 1: it was playing really good techno music, like Rose approved
- 25:20Speaker 1: techno music, but you're very picky about techno music. And
- 25:23Speaker 1: you Rose said that like as far as the club
- 25:25Speaker 1: scenes go, club scenes across the board in any movie
- 25:28Speaker 1: are done terribly. Yeah, like they don't. People who make
- 25:31Speaker 1: club scenes have probably never been in a club most
- 25:33Speaker 1: of the time. Yeah. I think that the last good
- 25:35Speaker 1: club scene before this was, um, the beginning of the
- 25:38Speaker 1: first Matrix movie. Oh I haven't. I actually will need
- 25:41Speaker 1: to revisit um. But this club was so well done
- 25:44Speaker 1: and it was uncie and like should exist. But the
- 25:46Speaker 1: fact that the penguin was kind of this mob boss,
- 25:49Speaker 1: corrupt club owner that didn't really have the gadgets and
- 25:53Speaker 1: gizmos of previous penguins that we've seen. He was not
- 25:56Speaker 1: shooting bullets out of an umbrella. Let's say, it made
- 25:59Speaker 1: him scary year and more real. I think that that
- 26:02Speaker 1: is kind of an overall thing about this iteration of
- 26:05Speaker 1: Batman in general is a lot of the different forms
- 26:09Speaker 1: of villainy and heroism were down to the roots, down
- 26:12Speaker 1: to what very actually in reality, Like Batman's tools are
- 26:16Speaker 1: also much more rudimentary, like they're there are things that could,
- 26:19Speaker 1: you know, in theory maybe almost exist, you know, like
- 26:23Speaker 1: as opposed to like except for the part where he
- 26:26Speaker 1: was like a flying squirrel, well, I mean that although
- 26:29Speaker 1: you can do that, you can do that. And I
- 26:31Speaker 1: liked that it flopped. He he fucked up. That was
- 26:34Speaker 1: really cool. Okay, So for the listeners, like, there is
- 26:38Speaker 1: a scene where Robert Patinson is trying to escape off
- 26:40Speaker 1: of like a tall skyscraper. He has a moment where
- 26:43Speaker 1: he's like, oh, funk, like I'm really high up, and
- 26:45Speaker 1: you see Batman afraid of heights, which is so cool.
- 26:48Speaker 1: But then he just jumps. He gasped, and he looks
- 26:52Speaker 1: you gasped very loud. I guess I'm a very reactive
- 26:55Speaker 1: movie watching it for you. But it's really really embarrassing.
- 26:57Speaker 1: It's not unfortunate. I love thank you. That's really sweet.
- 27:00Speaker 1: But I'm glad you do with it because I just gasped.
- 27:03Speaker 1: So but well, because we see almost every movie together,
- 27:07Speaker 1: you know, I've gotten used to it. But he looks
- 27:12Speaker 1: ridiculous as a flying squirrel, Like, it looks so kind
- 27:15Speaker 1: of stupid, but I'm glad it does kind of put
- 27:17Speaker 1: It does kind of put you into how scary that
- 27:21Speaker 1: would be to like jump in the building. Which is
- 27:22Speaker 1: another thing I did like about this movie is that
- 27:25Speaker 1: a lot of it kind of felt like a video game,
- 27:28Speaker 1: especially the scene where so um, once Batman has met
- 27:33Speaker 1: and kind of teamed up with Catwoman, he sends her
- 27:35Speaker 1: into Penguins Club to do reconnaissance for him using these
- 27:40Speaker 1: contact lenses that are cameras, and that felt very like
- 27:43Speaker 1: kind of first person video gaming, and I think it
- 27:46Speaker 1: helps you feel kind of like dropped into Batman's world,
- 27:51Speaker 1: which I thought was cool. I also think this is
- 27:53Speaker 1: a very good comic book movie like it felt kind
- 27:58Speaker 1: of Frank Millery. Um, if you've ever I don't know
- 28:02Speaker 1: if you've read any of the older Batman comics, Like
- 28:05Speaker 1: I'm not like super well versed in comics, but this
- 28:07Speaker 1: did give me kind of like eighties era, very like
- 28:10Speaker 1: noir e Batman vibes as opposed to Big C g I,
- 28:16Speaker 1: Spectacle Superhero Shenanigan. It was no air. It was moody,
- 28:21Speaker 1: noirri shadowy like se of the film was shot through
- 28:25Speaker 1: like wet glass, pretty much like there was a smoky,
- 28:29Speaker 1: kind of broody like film over the whole thing. It
- 28:32Speaker 1: looked so cool. The lighting was amazing, all of the
- 28:36Speaker 1: red lighting. The music was incredible, the music for so
- 28:41Speaker 1: beautiful haunting. Yeah, And I think that like characters like
- 28:46Speaker 1: Colin Ferrell's Penguin or Danny de Vito's Penguin rather also
- 28:49Speaker 1: lent itself to that noir element, like his. The reveal
- 28:52Speaker 1: of Penguin starts with it. He goes like, um, like
- 28:56Speaker 1: day it easy, sweet at or something like that, and
- 28:58Speaker 1: he sounds like exactly like Danny DeVito, but it's still
- 29:01Speaker 1: the way he delivers it is so noir, you know
- 29:04Speaker 1: what I mean. And I think that that's very video
- 29:06Speaker 1: gave me and like it kind of. I don't want
- 29:09Speaker 1: to say camp because like you know, fact, it's call
- 29:11Speaker 1: everything campy. Well, I don't think there was really anything
- 29:14Speaker 1: camp about this. Yeah, I'm saying that he was the
- 29:16Speaker 1: most cartoonish character in this film. Everyone else played a
- 29:19Speaker 1: more human kind of um understated version of the character,
- 29:24Speaker 1: like Zoe Kravitz for example. You know who I thought
- 29:27Speaker 1: was excellent so phenomenal is the first Catwoman. I would
- 29:31Speaker 1: say that was effortless, you know what I mean because
- 29:34Speaker 1: all these other Catwoman's which are all amazing. I like,
- 29:37Speaker 1: I literally yes, cat women people, cat people, if you will,
- 29:42Speaker 1: I love every iteration, even Halle Berry's Catwoman, Like, I
- 29:46Speaker 1: will love to wat them that. When we were driving,
- 29:51Speaker 1: it's like, yeah, I was, I was thinking about that.
- 29:55Speaker 1: It is very like I mean, honestly, Rob Rob Pattinson
- 29:58Speaker 1: was giving a little bat them with those with that,
- 30:01Speaker 1: he was giving a little fluid beauty, the first non
- 30:04Speaker 1: binary batman. I love that. Actually, would watch I feel like,
- 30:14Speaker 1: you know, you get earth this kind of and you
- 30:16Speaker 1: have Michelle Fifer, which is doing the most, and then
- 30:18Speaker 1: you have Catwoman, which is like the Razzy Award winner
- 30:21Speaker 1: to see Zoe Kravitz come in and she really is
- 30:23Speaker 1: just the sexy, cool catwoman that doesn't have an element
- 30:26Speaker 1: of camp to her. I was surprised but delighted because
- 30:30Speaker 1: she was on that Like there was this stupid article
- 30:32Speaker 1: written about an interview she gave about how she like
- 30:35Speaker 1: licked milk from a bowl to prepare for this roll
- 30:38Speaker 1: or whatever, and I was like, and she she like,
- 30:40Speaker 1: I absolutely would watch, but there's no way it was
- 30:42Speaker 1: whole milk. It had to have been. It was. It was.
- 30:46Speaker 1: It was an alternative, yeah, because that girl is not
- 30:50Speaker 1: drinking a whole milk. But like, I was like so
- 30:53Speaker 1: surprised to hear, like, oh, I watched like feeling behavior
- 30:55Speaker 1: videos and like all the stuff to prepare for the role.
- 30:57Speaker 1: She was very slinky, but none of that, none of
- 31:00Speaker 1: that really showed up in her. It was just part
- 31:04Speaker 1: of her process and for the better. Like it's we
- 31:06Speaker 1: didn't like I thought that. Honestly, the people that created
- 31:09Speaker 1: the Catwoman movie did Halle Berry so dirty by making
- 31:12Speaker 1: her slurp up sushi and like lick milk from a bowl.
- 31:15Speaker 1: And it's just like like I'm glad that we got
- 31:17Speaker 1: a Zoe that didn't have to do any of that catch. Yeah,
- 31:20Speaker 1: she was mostly just sexy. Um she was giving kind
- 31:23Speaker 1: of Natalie Portman in Closer. Um lying is the most
- 31:27Speaker 1: funny girl canna have without taking her clothes off. And
- 31:30Speaker 1: oh she had these nails that through the entire movie.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I was like, those are very impractical when you're parkouring
- 31:36Speaker 1: around of like, uh, you know fire she was parkouring
- 31:41Speaker 1: was well Batman, but truly at its core, all Batman
- 31:44Speaker 1: films are about Parker, Yes, Parker in hand to hand
- 31:50Speaker 1: combat because Batman refuses. I forgot that Beatman refuses to
- 31:54Speaker 1: use a gun. That that's like he's like, no guns,
- 31:57Speaker 1: but let me beat the ship out of teenage, which
- 32:00Speaker 1: actually and won't get to other Batman's later, But I
- 32:03Speaker 1: was watching clips of Anna Hathaway as Catwoman last night
- 32:07Speaker 1: and there's a part where Christian Bale goes no good
- 32:10Speaker 1: and Anne Hathaway goes, where's the fun? In that. Gotham
- 32:28Speaker 1: very much felt like a character in this movie. I
- 32:31Speaker 1: got a better idea of what the city was totally
- 32:36Speaker 1: u than other Batman movies, because I think the Christopher
- 32:39Speaker 1: Nolan Batman movies it's just kind of like a caricature
- 32:42Speaker 1: of like a bad city. Yeah it is, and this
- 32:46Speaker 1: Gotham felt very realized and like did feel more like
- 32:51Speaker 1: a version of New York rather than like downtown Toronto
- 32:54Speaker 1: as it does in you know, Christopher Nolan movie. Right.
- 32:57Speaker 1: I wish they had done and they made a little
- 33:00Speaker 1: more effort to make Gotham Square Garden look a little
- 33:04Speaker 1: less like Madison Square Arden. But I think that does
- 33:06Speaker 1: kind of the work of like you having to like
- 33:09Speaker 1: fill in the blanks with your mind to spend disbelief,
- 33:12Speaker 1: right exactly, and like I bought into it for like
- 33:15Speaker 1: a lot of the movie, and like, aside from the
- 33:18Speaker 1: fact that I do think that Zoe kravitz manicure was
- 33:21Speaker 1: all wrong, Like I felt like the nail shape was wrong,
- 33:24Speaker 1: and what should it have been? Where to have like
- 33:26Speaker 1: a square nail? No, they were like her nails were
- 33:31Speaker 1: to the nail shape was too wide for her finger
- 33:34Speaker 1: and we're very claw like I know, but they could
- 33:36Speaker 1: have been thinner. And I feel like she should have
- 33:38Speaker 1: had a cult, she should have some like chrome on there,
- 33:41Speaker 1: like a designer like it could have been if it
- 33:43Speaker 1: was like more real, I would have imagined some nail art,
- 33:46Speaker 1: you know what I mean she was though, like, oh
- 33:49Speaker 1: like even at the end when she was fleeing the city,
- 33:52Speaker 1: full eye makeup look yes, oh yeah, and full like
- 33:56Speaker 1: she was like, I am running from the law, but
- 33:58Speaker 1: I definitely have time to sit down and do a
- 34:01Speaker 1: cut cream to put a cut crease, um smudgy, a
- 34:05Speaker 1: smudgy mascara and U Urban TK glitterliner and the Glossier
- 34:10Speaker 1: lid star. She was not using classier. You know. I
- 34:13Speaker 1: did recently watch the Zoe Kravitz Um the Beauty Secrets video,
- 34:18Speaker 1: and that woman wears virtually no makeup. So I don't
- 34:20Speaker 1: know why the book because she's perfect. She's literally perfect. Um.
- 34:24Speaker 1: She is putting on her cat I um, but it's
- 34:27Speaker 1: like a dark brown instead of a black, so you
- 34:29Speaker 1: can barely see it. And she puts on what is
- 34:31Speaker 1: like basically like a quarter of a centimeter of like
- 34:34Speaker 1: a little catta and she just like smears it barely
- 34:37Speaker 1: with her fingers, like you can barely. She's like high voke,
- 34:39Speaker 1: here's how I look beautiful. And she just looks in
- 34:41Speaker 1: the mirror and she's like done. End of story. Yeah.
- 34:45Speaker 1: She talks a lot about like natural deodor and as well. Yeah,
- 34:48Speaker 1: I get that. Vibe incredible. It's a great it's a
- 34:51Speaker 1: great video. Do you think she owns a pair of
- 34:53Speaker 1: Tom's shoes? No, I think she's one point. I'm sure.
- 34:59Speaker 1: I'm sure you did. Shockingly didn't. But like Tom Shoes
- 35:03Speaker 1: was absolutely my culture at the time that they came out.
- 35:06Speaker 1: I love Zoe and everything that she's in. You know
- 35:09Speaker 1: what I really loved that I'm very sad did not
- 35:12Speaker 1: get renewed was the High Fidelity show on Hulu. I
- 35:15Speaker 1: didn't get renewed. I know it was canceled after one.
- 35:18Speaker 1: I honestly have not been on the Zoe Kravitz prior
- 35:23Speaker 1: to this movie. I've always admired her as a celebrity,
- 35:26Speaker 1: but I don't really remember her performances outside. Well, she's
- 35:31Speaker 1: she's yeah, she's usually kind of just like functional, you know,
- 35:35Speaker 1: she's there, she's doing her job. Yeah. And then of
- 35:38Speaker 1: course Robert, I mean, well, as everyone knows, this is
- 35:42Speaker 1: a Twilight stand podcast speaking of it, and you know,
- 35:46Speaker 1: if the past year has proven anything, it's that every
- 35:50Speaker 1: tongue that rises against Twilight shell fall. Look at the
- 35:53Speaker 1: stars of Twilight now one of them is nominated for
- 35:56Speaker 1: Best Actress at the Oscars and the other one is Batman,
- 36:00Speaker 1: and I will say, and this is someone who doesn't
- 36:03Speaker 1: care about Rob Pattinson. Sorry, Rob Pattinson. I think this
- 36:07Speaker 1: is the best work of his career so far. Like,
- 36:10Speaker 1: and you'll disagree because it's Twilight. As you might say,
- 36:13Speaker 1: Twilight is the best work of his career, but it's
- 36:16Speaker 1: my favorite. I don't know about best I would, but
- 36:18Speaker 1: I I loved I thought he totally disappeared into this Batman.
- 36:22Speaker 1: I completely forgot who he was. And he's such a
- 36:25Speaker 1: you know, if we talk about like star versus actress,
- 36:28Speaker 1: like he is more of a star, you know, like
- 36:30Speaker 1: he is more of like someone who people talk more
- 36:33Speaker 1: about the tabloids of Rob Pattinson than they do about
- 36:36Speaker 1: his actual acting. But that's why they earned this. Yeah,
- 36:40Speaker 1: that's why I think Batman is a very good role.
- 36:42Speaker 1: Because Batman is a character. It is very opaque, and
- 36:46Speaker 1: I think Rob Pattinson is a person who, because of
- 36:49Speaker 1: the tabloid first surrounding him verse whole career, has had
- 36:52Speaker 1: to make himself into that, like, has had to give
- 36:55Speaker 1: away very little of himself. So I think he's slatted
- 37:00Speaker 1: very well into the role of this like billionaire vigilante
- 37:05Speaker 1: who and that was something that we were talking about
- 37:07Speaker 1: after the movie last night, is that this is a
- 37:10Speaker 1: Batman movie that, more than any of them, like attempts
- 37:14Speaker 1: to reckon with Batman and Bruce Wayne's privilege in a way.
- 37:18Speaker 1: There there is a part where where Catwoman Selena Kyle says, like,
- 37:24Speaker 1: you know, you're just like a privileged asshole and you
- 37:26Speaker 1: know you none, none of these like white men are
- 37:29Speaker 1: going to get what's coming to them. And it's good
- 37:31Speaker 1: that she says that, and I like that it's brought up.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I think it could have been explored a little bit more.
- 37:37Speaker 1: I you know, I said to you, I wished that
- 37:40Speaker 1: Zoe hadn't used the word privilege, Like I wish they
- 37:43Speaker 1: hadn't written the word privilege. But it's so cheap. Yeah,
- 37:46Speaker 1: but in this kind of movie that's going to be
- 37:48Speaker 1: seen by like the dumbest of the dumb people, like
- 37:52Speaker 1: you have to spell it out that explicitly. There were
- 37:55Speaker 1: other ways to do it. I think that when I
- 37:57Speaker 1: watched previous Batman movies, I'm like, it's so I just
- 38:00Speaker 1: feel like the fatal flaw of Batman is that he
- 38:02Speaker 1: is a ba billionaire and like it's just there's nothing
- 38:05Speaker 1: really that interesting. It's that's never investigated or made interesting
- 38:09Speaker 1: in any of the previous films. So I like that
- 38:11Speaker 1: they kind of prodded at that. I have to say. Also,
- 38:14Speaker 1: I mean, before we dive into like the capitalism of Batman,
- 38:17Speaker 1: like that on on the broody like kind of nature
- 38:21Speaker 1: of like Rob Pattinson. I like that even though he
- 38:24Speaker 1: didn't overplay anything, he was still you know, stoic and
- 38:28Speaker 1: inhuman and that kind of like, you know, totally stone
- 38:31Speaker 1: faced like Batman, we still got this kind of fragile
- 38:35Speaker 1: emo guy out of him just because of what Rob
- 38:38Speaker 1: Pattinson looks like. Well, it was very like um, it
- 38:41Speaker 1: was almost like when he was out of the bat suit,
- 38:44Speaker 1: he was like exposed, like a turtle without its shell,
- 38:48Speaker 1: and then it was only when he was in the
- 38:49Speaker 1: suit that he like came alive in a way. My
- 38:52Speaker 1: one critique on the bat suit is that, I mean,
- 38:55Speaker 1: aside from the fact that it should have had nipples,
- 38:57Speaker 1: is that the helmet accentuated Rob Pattinson's already alarmingly triangular head,
- 39:03Speaker 1: and it made his head look even more triangular. I
- 39:06Speaker 1: thought it was hot. The bottom half of his face
- 39:08Speaker 1: looked great. But also like I totally disagree with facial
- 39:12Speaker 1: recognition where it is now. He just realistically, and I
- 39:16Speaker 1: know this is a movie they have to show his face,
- 39:18Speaker 1: but like the jig would have been up if that
- 39:20Speaker 1: much of his space was exposed. And also people are
- 39:23Speaker 1: shooting at him all the time, and and it would
- 39:25Speaker 1: have been very easy for a stray bullet to like
- 39:28Speaker 1: explode the bottom half of his face. You would think
- 39:30Speaker 1: that they would have found a movie magic way to
- 39:33Speaker 1: kind of address that by this point, but you know,
- 39:36Speaker 1: it's Batman's fantasy. But yeah, did you know that um
- 39:40Speaker 1: Rob Pattinson wore George Clooney's batsuit for his screen test
- 39:46Speaker 1: with Zoe Kravitz. That's hot, and he wore apparently sweatpants
- 39:51Speaker 1: on the bottom. You know what I you know what
- 39:53Speaker 1: I was thinking watching this movie is what does Batman
- 39:55Speaker 1: do in the summer? Like? Does he does? He? Does? He?
- 39:59Speaker 1: Like it doesn't have a sleeveless batsuit. Maybe his pits
- 40:02Speaker 1: are exposed because you know, it's all well and good
- 40:05Speaker 1: to be running around in that suit like in the
- 40:07Speaker 1: dead of winter. And I imagine even when it's sub
- 40:10Speaker 1: zero outside, your crotch probably gets a little sweaty. But
- 40:15Speaker 1: when it's a hundred degrees in Gotham, he can't be
- 40:18Speaker 1: running around in the cape. Maybe it's that kind of
- 40:20Speaker 1: you know, Uniclode heat tech that's like very breathable, you know,
- 40:23Speaker 1: like he could have some kind of cooling system there.
- 40:28Speaker 1: He is very wealthy, but but it is so he's
- 40:31Speaker 1: got to be so hot. Also, let's talk about the
- 40:32Speaker 1: fact that Batman had a vibe with not one, but
- 40:35Speaker 1: two men in this movie. I mean, you you think
- 40:38Speaker 1: you always think that, but I do always think that.
- 40:40Speaker 1: But I think there was a vibe with him and
- 40:43Speaker 1: Detective Gordon, and then he also had a vibe with Alfred. Yeah,
- 40:47Speaker 1: I didn't I caught the Gordon vibe. I didn't catch
- 40:51Speaker 1: that there was a daddy vibe with Alfred. It was daddy.
- 40:55Speaker 1: It was it was daddy. It's so funny that, actually,
- 40:57Speaker 1: when it comes down to it, every Batman movie is
- 41:00Speaker 1: high key about daddy issues. All superhero movies about daddy
- 41:04Speaker 1: issues and also mommy issues. Like that was the thing
- 41:07Speaker 1: with with Selena Kyle is like you find out that
- 41:10Speaker 1: her whole trauma comes back to her mom and her dad.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Well daddy issues too. Yeah, I think that that, honestly,
- 41:17Speaker 1: I mean again, I really loved this movie. I think
- 41:21Speaker 1: the first thing I said to you when he walked
- 41:23Speaker 1: out of the theater is like, it's a totally worthy
- 41:25Speaker 1: Batman movie. And I thought, well, cast um, but would
- 41:30Speaker 1: have been a much more compelling film if we haven't
- 41:33Speaker 1: already gone through ten Batman movies in our lifetime, like
- 41:37Speaker 1: and I felt like more more, Yeah, definitely probably. And
- 41:41Speaker 1: I felt like, you know, a lot of Christopher Nolan's
- 41:45Speaker 1: iteration of Batman was, you know, helping us figure out
- 41:50Speaker 1: more about what Batman's motivations are, what makes him tick,
- 41:53Speaker 1: like what hit? What is kind of behind Batman's psyche,
- 41:57Speaker 1: and like whether he's good or bad? Well you got
- 41:59Speaker 1: a little of that in his monologue that built the
- 42:02Speaker 1: beginning and the end of the film, which you didn't
- 42:04Speaker 1: love so much. I didn't love the monologues, but the
- 42:08Speaker 1: monologues are very Batman. I just felt like, I just
- 42:11Speaker 1: felt like my issue was that the monologues, which were
- 42:16Speaker 1: also very broody and philosophical and kind of played to
- 42:19Speaker 1: this smokey existential loan cowboy is he good or is
- 42:23Speaker 1: he good? Is he good or is he bad? Batman
- 42:26Speaker 1: just kind of regurgitated a lot of what The Dark
- 42:28Speaker 1: Knight was like or not regurgitated, but it felt like
- 42:31Speaker 1: what The Dark Knight had already explored and to go
- 42:35Speaker 1: back to where we were, what we were talking about.
- 42:38Speaker 1: I think what the film did that was completely new
- 42:40Speaker 1: was start to investigate this conversation of I don't even
- 42:44Speaker 1: want to say privilege again because it's so cheap, but
- 42:46Speaker 1: I think that the notion of was Batman's dad corrupt?
- 42:50Speaker 1: And is that something that Batman now has to reconcile
- 42:53Speaker 1: with and like, what is my function as Batman in
- 42:58Speaker 1: the totality of society when the villains are sometimes kind
- 43:01Speaker 1: of right about this, you know what I mean? Yeah,
- 43:04Speaker 1: which which was like that whole idea is played with
- 43:07Speaker 1: with the Riddler and his followers because through the whole movie,
- 43:10Speaker 1: Batman is saying I am vengeance. I am vengeance. And
- 43:14Speaker 1: then at the end of the movie, one of the
- 43:16Speaker 1: Riddlers followers says, when Batman says, who are you, he says,
- 43:20Speaker 1: I am vengeance. So like this whole idea that like
- 43:23Speaker 1: there is a very thin line between who's the hero
- 43:25Speaker 1: who's the villain, and like Batman is the hero of
- 43:28Speaker 1: his story and some other people's stories, but you know,
- 43:31Speaker 1: so are these people who think they're saving Gotham in
- 43:35Speaker 1: a different way? Um? And this is I think something
- 43:39Speaker 1: that that all Batman media explores. Um. And also like
- 43:45Speaker 1: I think depending on who is playing Batman and who
- 43:48Speaker 1: is directing, you get a little bit more one way
- 43:51Speaker 1: or another, because like you know, you think about Michael
- 43:53Speaker 1: Keaton and like the Tim Burton movies, there's no question
- 43:56Speaker 1: of whether Batman is a hero because like because of
- 43:59Speaker 1: how cartoonish it is. Yeah, it's a flattening of a
- 44:02Speaker 1: lot of that franchise, which I guess like we can
- 44:04Speaker 1: maybe talk a little bit about some of the other
- 44:08Speaker 1: ba Batman. And like why Batman, of all the superheroes,
- 44:13Speaker 1: there are the most Batman movies And I wonder why
- 44:16Speaker 1: that is, Like is it because Batman is the most
- 44:21Speaker 1: self insert superhero character? Like because I was thinking about
- 44:27Speaker 1: in this movie, you know, outside of Batman, like Bruce
- 44:31Speaker 1: Wayne is such a nonentity, you know, he's just his
- 44:37Speaker 1: like his personality is like it's only the top line.
- 44:40Speaker 1: It's like rich superhero. So is that why especially these
- 44:45Speaker 1: male directors and studios come back to Batman again and
- 44:50Speaker 1: again because he is the superhero that it's most easy
- 44:53Speaker 1: for probably like a male audience member to imagine themselves as.
- 44:58Speaker 1: And maybe that's why Also this movie felt a little
- 45:00Speaker 1: bit like video game me because you know, like you
- 45:04Speaker 1: may you maybe can't imagine yourself as like Iron Man
- 45:07Speaker 1: or Thor or Superman is easily, but like you can
- 45:11Speaker 1: put yourself in the mode of like what if I
- 45:13Speaker 1: was really rich and had the money to like go
- 45:15Speaker 1: out in the streets with a mask on and fight crime? Yeah?
- 45:18Speaker 1: What would like? What? Yeah? And I think that this
- 45:21Speaker 1: film specifically, I sought to like investigate that. Um, I
- 45:26Speaker 1: don't know. I when I think about like the Batman's
- 45:30Speaker 1: of Yore, I think, I don't know who's your favor Well,
- 45:35Speaker 1: my favorite Batman movie is Batman and Robin, because I
- 45:39Speaker 1: mean it was very formative for me as a kid.
- 45:42Speaker 1: Poison Ivy specifically, like has influence has influenced so much
- 45:47Speaker 1: of me as a person in terms of things that
- 45:50Speaker 1: I consumed. I was so drawn, as I told lady
- 45:52Speaker 1: when I pulled her plug, this is the one woman show.
- 45:56Speaker 1: I love that movie. I was always drawn to like
- 45:58Speaker 1: the evil fam I like loved mal Officent growing up. Um,
- 46:01Speaker 1: I loved you know, Poison Ivy I felt like there
- 46:05Speaker 1: was something I didn't catch on to the parts of
- 46:08Speaker 1: the movie that were like bad because I was like,
- 46:10Speaker 1: what eight or whatever. So I just enjoyed it purely
- 46:14Speaker 1: as human. Of course, we watch it as an adult.
- 46:15Speaker 1: We watch it because it's kind of a so good
- 46:17Speaker 1: it's bad movie. But I still love it, like unconditionally. Um,
- 46:22Speaker 1: in terms of who my favorite bat Man is, I'm
- 46:26Speaker 1: gonna be crazy and say that Rob Pattinson is my
- 46:30Speaker 1: favorite Batman so far. I get it. And this is
- 46:33Speaker 1: someone who doesn't even care that much about Rob Pattinson,
- 46:35Speaker 1: But I think I just liked that his his kind
- 46:37Speaker 1: of like pasty, almost schleppy, kind of white guy thing
- 46:42Speaker 1: was uh, something very new, and he leaned into it.
- 46:47Speaker 1: He leaned into this kind of he felt almost pathetic
- 46:51Speaker 1: at times when he was just Bruce, he felt kind
- 46:54Speaker 1: of pathetic. He was hot, and I was into that.
- 46:56Speaker 1: I like George Queeney's Batman as well, but like, no,
- 46:59Speaker 1: it really is Robbed for me and I and UM.
- 47:02Speaker 1: I also will say when there's a moment in the
- 47:05Speaker 1: beginning of the movie where you see you know Batman,
- 47:08Speaker 1: he Bruce like takes off his shirt and he sees
- 47:10Speaker 1: the scars on his back, but he still looks kind
- 47:13Speaker 1: of like pasty skinny Rob Pattinson and I turned to
- 47:16Speaker 1: Rose and I was like, I wonder if they spray
- 47:17Speaker 1: panted his abs this time like they did in Twilight.
- 47:20Speaker 1: Was it the second or the Moon? Because right, Rob
- 47:25Speaker 1: famously hates working out. Okay, and then later in the
- 47:29Speaker 1: last third of the movie, he takes off his shirt
- 47:31Speaker 1: and Mama, they put him to work. He is up,
- 47:35Speaker 1: he was, he was hitting that pre workout every day.
- 47:38Speaker 1: He's multiple. He's chugging that muscle milk, probably the same
- 47:41Speaker 1: one that I am just full body chills every time
- 47:43Speaker 1: I drink this disgusting protein shape. Well, my favorite Batman
- 47:48Speaker 1: is Michael Keaton, and my favorite Batman movie is Batman Returns.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Um And honestly it might be my favorite superhero movie
- 47:57Speaker 1: is Batman Returns, the one with Michelle Peifer. Okay, of course,
- 48:00Speaker 1: of course, so Tim Burton, right, yeah, Okay, that is
- 48:04Speaker 1: the most Tim Burton of the Batman movies. I think
- 48:08Speaker 1: it's I think it's the best marriage of comic book
- 48:14Speaker 1: cartoon superhero and big budget blockbuster superhero legitimate action movie. Yes,
- 48:21Speaker 1: it's very fun, it is campy, but not too much.
- 48:25Speaker 1: It's very dark, it's very sexy. I like, I have
- 48:28Speaker 1: a lot of formative childhood like sexual memories around Michelle
- 48:34Speaker 1: Peiffer as Catwoman, and I think her and Michael Keaton
- 48:38Speaker 1: have incredible chemistry in that movie. Which was my critique
- 48:43Speaker 1: of The Batman, which you disagree on. But I felt
- 48:46Speaker 1: like Zoe and Rob didn't really have any romantics. I
- 48:49Speaker 1: thought they had seen I thought they had sexual chemistry.
- 48:52Speaker 1: I thought they wanted to fuck. But I will say
- 48:55Speaker 1: Batman returns Fox Fox. Yeah, that that that really. I
- 49:01Speaker 1: think I would have loved to see the sexual tension
- 49:03Speaker 1: between Batman and Catwoman earned the way it is with
- 49:06Speaker 1: Michelle Phifer. But Michelle Phiffer can have sexual tension with
- 49:09Speaker 1: literally anything like that. Trash can like that. Like Michelle
- 49:12Speaker 1: could just have a full romp with But I don't know.
- 49:15Speaker 1: It was just the k There were two kisses in
- 49:18Speaker 1: this movie, and neither of them were it. They were
- 49:21Speaker 1: a little unearned, like it was very much that they
- 49:25Speaker 1: had sexual they were into each other just because the
- 49:28Speaker 1: movie decided they were exactly But it still worked for me.
- 49:32Speaker 1: But and and regardless, I did gasp loudly both times.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Probably whereas in that in Batman Returns, like you you
- 49:41Speaker 1: see Batman and Catwoman vibe with each other, and you
- 49:48Speaker 1: see Bruce Wayne and Selena Kyle vibe with each other,
- 49:51Speaker 1: right exactly. Yeah, yeah, and and there, and I thought
- 49:54Speaker 1: the relationship between Bruce and Selena felt more like they
- 49:59Speaker 1: had had more to do with each other, where in
- 50:03Speaker 1: previous iterations of Catwoman, she just kind of shows up
- 50:06Speaker 1: and steals her own stuff and does her own thing,
- 50:09Speaker 1: and it's just kind of an additional villain where Zoe
- 50:13Speaker 1: Kravitz and Bruce have to kind of work together. I
- 50:16Speaker 1: think Anne Hathaway has to work with Batman but still
- 50:19Speaker 1: betrays him right multiple times. Yeah, I from the super
- 50:23Speaker 1: cut that I watched on YouTube last night. I think so,
- 50:26Speaker 1: because that is the thing with Catwoman, and it's why
- 50:28Speaker 1: that she is very hard to categorize, Like she's not
- 50:32Speaker 1: always a villain, She's definitely not a hero. She her
- 50:36Speaker 1: allegiances to herself above everything, and it depends when that
- 50:41Speaker 1: aligns with other people's interests then she will align herself
- 50:45Speaker 1: with them. And this Batman movie, the Batman, she I
- 50:50Speaker 1: think was a you know, we saw her reckon with
- 50:53Speaker 1: like wanting to kill who turned out to be her father,
- 50:56Speaker 1: the mob guy. But I think she was like a
- 50:59Speaker 1: little too on the inside. I could have used maybe
- 51:01Speaker 1: like if she had teamed up with the Riddler at
- 51:03Speaker 1: some point or like been implicated in what he was doing,
- 51:06Speaker 1: because I like when Catwoman, you know, betrays Batman a
- 51:12Speaker 1: little bit. I think that's fun to play with. Yeah,
- 51:15Speaker 1: I feel like when I think about like Anne Hathaway
- 51:17Speaker 1: as Catwoman, which I didn't is a great performance, but
- 51:23Speaker 1: not a I don't think a good movie, and not
- 51:25Speaker 1: a good Catwoman. In my opinion, it's certainly not a
- 51:27Speaker 1: memorable movie because I remember nothing about it, but I
- 51:30Speaker 1: I rewatched it in Quarantine, and and Hathaway was the
- 51:32Speaker 1: most watchful part in my opinion. And she and they
- 51:36Speaker 1: end up together at the end. They do, they will
- 51:38Speaker 1: they the Romans run away together. The romances hammered down
- 51:41Speaker 1: more from what I remember, um, But I like that
- 51:45Speaker 1: throughout the history of Catwoman there is this kind of
- 51:49Speaker 1: zany irreverence that I think Anne Hathaway does very well,
- 51:52Speaker 1: that you know, Zoe kind of you know, took out
- 51:56Speaker 1: of the role that was still really enjoyable. But I
- 51:59Speaker 1: obviously my face her Catwoman of all time, aside from
- 52:02Speaker 1: Michelle Feifer is earth Kit, who took it on after
- 52:05Speaker 1: I think Julie Newmar, but like which she did her
- 52:09Speaker 1: I think I feel like she was probably cast because
- 52:14Speaker 1: by this point in her career, purring was already her thing,
- 52:19Speaker 1: and so they were like, who's that celebrity that purrs? Ah, yeah, Eartha.
- 52:22Speaker 1: I actually don't know that, or maybe like she only
- 52:25Speaker 1: started purring because of Catwoman, that might make more sense. No,
- 52:28Speaker 1: I think it's I actually do think it's the latter.
- 52:30Speaker 1: I've I've read like one and a half of um
- 52:34Speaker 1: Earth Kids biography, so you'd think I would know this UM,
- 52:37Speaker 1: but they're so sensationalized and ghest written as well, so
- 52:40Speaker 1: it doesn't even matter. But like when Eartha was on
- 52:43Speaker 1: TV as Catwoman, this is at a time when like,
- 52:46Speaker 1: you know, Jet magazine is still like the back page
- 52:49Speaker 1: of Jet is like you know, every black person that's
- 52:52Speaker 1: going to be on TV that week or something like
- 52:54Speaker 1: There's it was such a scarcity mentality of like I
- 52:57Speaker 1: guess representation at the time, and and and so Eartha's
- 53:02Speaker 1: place in superhero TV shows was so much more meaningful
- 53:06Speaker 1: to like audience members, and her performance is obviously so iconic.
- 53:10Speaker 1: But what I loved about Zoe was that it was
- 53:12Speaker 1: almost meaningful, like like representation didn't matter. Really, this is
- 53:33Speaker 1: bringing us very nicely into like the Tim Burton Joel
- 53:36Speaker 1: Schumacher era of Batman movies, which are very you and me.
- 53:40Speaker 1: We did actually watch We watched Batman Forever. Yeah, you
- 53:43Speaker 1: had never seen it, Yes, which is the thing that
- 53:45Speaker 1: led me to buy you a taser for Christmas, which
- 53:48Speaker 1: you then immediately threatened. Yeah. Um. And I think that
- 53:53Speaker 1: that is honestly part of the reason I feel so
- 53:55Speaker 1: exhausted by Batman movies. Why I was a little salty
- 53:59Speaker 1: about this Batman movie, even though I really loved it,
- 54:02Speaker 1: was like, I do miss the cartoonish stylings of that
- 54:08Speaker 1: era of movies, and I want to see that kind
- 54:12Speaker 1: of like play and that zany irreverence of previous films
- 54:17Speaker 1: injected into new superheroes. And I feel like they do
- 54:20Speaker 1: it with like a a Venom or maybe like a
- 54:22Speaker 1: Deadpool or something like that. But Guardians of the Galaxy
- 54:26Speaker 1: does that a little too. Yeah, but the movie, but
- 54:28Speaker 1: movies in general, especially big superhero movies, just take themselves
- 54:31Speaker 1: so seriously and the kind of would have I wouldn't
- 54:35Speaker 1: have minded a punchline in this Batman, but it was
- 54:37Speaker 1: like the most unfunny Batman, like, like the only funny
- 54:41Speaker 1: parts were Colin Ferrell's penguin. Um, and that was kind
- 54:45Speaker 1: of it. I could have used as I told Lady
- 54:47Speaker 1: Freeze when I pulled her plug moment, yeah, or some
- 54:50Speaker 1: like Harley Quinn essence you would Well, there was a
- 54:53Speaker 1: there was a rumor at least I saw one TikTok
- 54:56Speaker 1: saying that UM a variant of her of Harley Quinn
- 55:01Speaker 1: maybe still UM like pre Harley Quinn, Dr Harley and
- 55:05Speaker 1: Quinzel was going to show up in one of the
- 55:09Speaker 1: Arkham scenes. But that obviously didn't happen. But spoiler, I mean,
- 55:14Speaker 1: this whole podcast has been a spoiler. But like Joker
- 55:16Speaker 1: shows up. Was it Joker or was it to face
- 55:20Speaker 1: he makes a joke about being a clown he made
- 55:23Speaker 1: he made that joke about it. Had it was definitely Joker,
- 55:26Speaker 1: which I was. That was like the peak of my
- 55:29Speaker 1: It was the final the third hour of the movie,
- 55:31Speaker 1: the peak of my exhaustion. I was just like I
- 55:35Speaker 1: ten ten to fifteen Batman movies. I've seen hundreds of
- 55:40Speaker 1: villains to pick from in this franchise, and I was
- 55:43Speaker 1: I loved the Riddler coming back. I thought it was fine,
- 55:46Speaker 1: but like he was no Jim Carrey though Jim Carrey,
- 55:50Speaker 1: and he was no Riddler from um Harley Quinn, who
- 55:54Speaker 1: I love, I don't even oh my god, wait, we
- 55:57Speaker 1: have to talk about the Harley Quinn Show. But before
- 55:59Speaker 1: I just I just felt like when we finally saw
- 56:01Speaker 1: this hint of Joker and in my opinion, bad Joker makeup,
- 56:04Speaker 1: like Joker makeup that I can't take seriously. Um, it
- 56:07Speaker 1: just like feels like a failure of the imagination, especially
- 56:09Speaker 1: when Poison Ivy is right there. Um. And I just
- 56:12Speaker 1: I'm like, we there's so many villains to choos froim,
- 56:14Speaker 1: and we're going back to Joker when Joker already had
- 56:17Speaker 1: like he's already had three of his other movies. Have
- 56:19Speaker 1: you heard the rumor that Lady Gaga is going to
- 56:22Speaker 1: be in a Joker movie like in the in the
- 56:27Speaker 1: same thing as as the wakuin Vihoenix Joker, which which
- 56:33Speaker 1: if Lady Gaga is in like a real is in
- 56:35Speaker 1: like a gritty, realistic Joker movie, that will be my
- 56:39Speaker 1: Joker origin story. Prostlytizing dangerous. Although although let's say, let's
- 56:43Speaker 1: say that almost everything Lady Gaga has done has been
- 56:46Speaker 1: my joker origin story. Yeah, including she's probably Do you
- 56:49Speaker 1: think she's auditioned for the Madonna boot Camp? No, she's girl.
- 56:53Speaker 1: No you don't think she's too old be with all
- 56:56Speaker 1: the beefs she has with Madonna. No, that's never happening.
- 56:59Speaker 1: I mean she still loves and respects Madonna. Did you
- 57:02Speaker 1: not see five for two? What kind of question is
- 57:04Speaker 1: that she wants to fuck Madona's never going to happen.
- 57:06Speaker 1: Lady Gaga is never playing Madonna on the Riddler of
- 57:09Speaker 1: it All. I did feel like elements of him were
- 57:13Speaker 1: a little bane. Well, yeah, the kind of intelligent. Although
- 57:17Speaker 1: I would have I would have liked the ban from
- 57:19Speaker 1: the Harley Quinn Show from how Heartbreak Feels Good at
- 57:24Speaker 1: a place like this? The sings some I can't it's
- 57:30Speaker 1: very break feels good at a place like this. That
- 57:36Speaker 1: sounds absurd, but the virgins have to know that it
- 57:39Speaker 1: is a spot on impression. We have to talk about
- 57:42Speaker 1: the Harley Quinn Show. So on HBO Max, there's a
- 57:44Speaker 1: Harley Quinn animated series starring Haley Haley Quoco. Oh my
- 57:50Speaker 1: God forgot shout out to shout out to all my
- 57:52Speaker 1: Quoco nuts out there, um as as Harley Quinn. And
- 57:56Speaker 1: it's so good. It takes. It's like the storyline of
- 58:00Speaker 1: it is that Harley Quinn has been dumped by the
- 58:02Speaker 1: Joker for the last time, so she decides to start
- 58:04Speaker 1: her own super villain team. It's a very adult cartoon.
- 58:08Speaker 1: It's like super violent. Like it's like lots of Yeah,
- 58:12Speaker 1: it's lots of bad language. It's very gay. It's very gay.
- 58:16Speaker 1: I it was such a breath of fresh air. We
- 58:18Speaker 1: watched it in Quarantine, like in the you know, the
- 58:20Speaker 1: parts where the parts of Quarantine were. We really couldn't
- 58:23Speaker 1: see other people, Like I think. I came over to
- 58:25Speaker 1: your apartment and we ate cereal and watched it, which
- 58:28Speaker 1: is so fun in the middle of the day. Love
- 58:30Speaker 1: Love a Saturday morning cartoon. Yeah, And I'm not really
- 58:34Speaker 1: I don't always click into cartoons like that, and this
- 58:37Speaker 1: I don't either. I really am not a cartoon girl
- 58:40Speaker 1: because I like, I need to see a real human being. Yeah,
- 58:43Speaker 1: exactly the same way. And I felt like this was
- 58:45Speaker 1: so the characters were so so gay and so real,
- 58:50Speaker 1: and the jokes are really funny. It's one of the
- 58:53Speaker 1: few shows I have watched in recent memory where I
- 58:57Speaker 1: consistently laughed out loud watching it over and over, especially
- 59:01Speaker 1: at Bain's jokes. Is the best and somehow pulls off
- 59:06Speaker 1: very of the moment cultural commentary humor, which really doesn't
- 59:11Speaker 1: hit a lot of the time. But you could tell
- 59:13Speaker 1: the people that a lot of people in the writer's
- 59:15Speaker 1: room were of our generation, you know. Um, but what
- 59:18Speaker 1: is the All of the villains have a stick. They're
- 59:21Speaker 1: all kind of dysfunctional or kind of made fun of
- 59:24Speaker 1: in some way. And Bain stick is that he is
- 59:26Speaker 1: like everyone hates him that everyone finds. Yeah, he's a flop,
- 59:30Speaker 1: but he's also kind of like really insecure and feminine,
- 59:33Speaker 1: and he masks his insecurities with bombs, which is so funny.
- 59:38Speaker 1: But what's the Riddler stick? I can't remember? Um that
- 59:40Speaker 1: he he like gets really buff at one point, Yeah,
- 59:43Speaker 1: because remember they have him on a hamster wheel. Yeah,
- 59:45Speaker 1: oh yeah. And isn't he like constantly saying riddles? Everyone's like,
- 59:48Speaker 1: what the fun Yeah, he's made a little gay too. Yeah.
- 59:51Speaker 1: I think he's just made fun of for the fact
- 59:53Speaker 1: that the Riddler is like a villain that's on. He's
- 59:56Speaker 1: easy to me. He's lame villain. Well, and I liked
- 59:59Speaker 1: I thought that this bat End movie, the Rob Pattinson
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Batman made Riddler scary. Sure, I thought that it was
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: well done, but it still felt like pain in the
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Dark Knights pain rather. I also loved the Riddler in
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: this Batman movie was a content creator, like he was
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: for the Virgins. Well, he like made all these selfie
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: videos and like I kept wondering if he had a
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: ring light and there was a point where he goes
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: live with Batman. They were, they had they were doing
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: a collab and like literally all these little audience members
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: are like, you know, harding and liking me, Like, oh
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: my god, Rid Larry love you women to buy the
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: same outfit as you like. Like Honestly, all Batman villains,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: a lot of Batman villains are content creators and aspiring influencers.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: They really want to broadcast their villainy. They really need
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: an audience, they need the likes. They're doing it for
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: the Graham, you know, because I don't think Riddler would
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: have done everything he would have done if he could
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: do it quietly, not doing it for the Graham. He
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: was doing it for the Grahama. He was doing it
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: for the dark. I don't think he was on Instagram.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: I think he was on TikTok and Snapchat, maybe Facebook.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: I think Facebook Marketplace. That's where he was buying all
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: that stuff for his apartment. Yeah. You know, a couple
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: of episodes we we talked about the m c U
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: with Joel k and Booster. If you haven't listened, to
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: go back and and listen to that. And I did
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: find myself a lot thinking about the m c U
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: and how different this was from it, and how it's
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: maybe almost a reaction to it, because you know, in
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: recent years, the m c U, which has kind of
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: always been like on such a big scale, really got
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: to the biggest scale it possibly could be with End
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Game and also with Spiderman No Way Home. We're like,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: we're now looking at the multiverse. And I think this Batman,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: it being so grounded and so focused on street level heroism,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: which is like kind of the categorization of superheroes like Batman,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: like Spider Man. I think like that very much is
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: a re action to the sort of like cosmic implications
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: of the m c U, and I almost like kind
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: of think that's maybe why the last Spider Man movie
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: ended the way it did, because like, you have Spider
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Man multiverse shenanigans, and then at the end of the movie,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: he winds up back in a place where he's much
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: more of like the classic Spider Man that we know.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: We're like, he has no friends, he has like a
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: very basic spider suit, and he like, once again, is
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: your friendly neighborhood spider Man. And so I wonder maybe
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: if we're going to now see a trend of superheroes
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: that are like a little bit more on the small scale.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: And that's the thing with stories that are this contained
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: and why I tend to enjoy them more in the
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: superhero of it all is that like when you have
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: a hero that is totally on his own, you do
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: get to start to ask questions about privilege and capital
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: or like what is good or bad? Where adventurous movies
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: don't really there are themes in them, yeah, but they
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: don't really have a ton of time to actually dig
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: into the emotional lives of many of these characters or
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: what they're kind of philosophical backings are. And even though
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: as we said, like this Batman doesn't really dig into
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: the privileged conversation in the way I thought it was
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: going to, because it really leaned in hard and then
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: pulled away at at the end from it. Um I
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: thought maybe there would be more of a full circle
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: moment where we would see Batman in a very real
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: way reconcile with the fact that he's a billionaire and
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: like what you know happened? What what a billionaire can
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: do to like help societal collapse or societal restructure? Right?
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: Because like if Bruce Raid really wanted to put his
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: money where his mouth was, wouldn't he just put his
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: billions of dollars towards like actually like fixing the infrastructure
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: of got them that he knew Gotham Renewal program, Like
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: if all of that Gotham Renewal like money was used
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: to like like for corruption, wouldn't he just be like, Oh,
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: let me just donate another build? Was there a moment
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: at the beginning? I don't pay attention when people are
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: just talking. Unfortunately, as you know, I love that. Also
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: every single Batman movie, Alfred has one character trait, well
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: to character traits, which is that No. Three, he's British,
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: he's gay, and he's like Batman. Why do you got
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: to go out and do this Batman stuff? Like, why
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: are you gotta do this? This hurts my feelings. I'm
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: worried about you Batman, Like every time it's like girl, Yeah,
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: but I feel like it's just this is the job
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: you sign up for a girl like, well, no he didn't.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: He signed up to be Batman's butler, and then Batman
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: like Dad's butler. Honestly, Yeah, Well I am very interested
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: to see if Batman ex Alfred fan fiction becomes a thing.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: Probably already exists, definitely already exists. Definitely everything you wrote
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: it already. You're all one last night before you went
