- 0:08Hello there again. Welcome to another mental health
- 0:11moment from the Life Live Better podcast.
- 0:13This is the place where we take just a couple of minutes, take
- 0:16care of our minds. I'm Paula and today we're
- 0:19discussing the connection between music and mental health.
- 0:23Have you ever noticed how just one single song can completely
- 0:27change your mood? Certain songs can transform me.
- 0:32One minute I'll be stressed or overwhelmed or exhausted.
- 0:36Even then, one of my favorite songs comes on and suddenly
- 0:40things feel a little lighter. That happens to you too.
- 0:44Know that it's not just your imagination, it's actually your
- 0:48brain. Music has a unique relationship
- 0:51with mental health because it activates multiple areas of the
- 0:55brain at the same time. Music can influence our
- 0:59emotions, our memory, our attention, movement, even the
- 1:03release of chemicals like dopamine, which is associated
- 1:07with pleasure and motivation. Think about it.
- 1:11I mean, certain songs can instantly transport us back to a
- 1:16specific moment in our life, like a graduation or a road
- 1:21trip, a first date, maybe a loss.
- 1:25Music kind of becomes the soundtrack to our experiences,
- 1:29which is why it can evoke those such powerful emotions.
- 1:33You know, research actually shows us that music can help us
- 1:37reduce stress and anxiety. It can actually calm our nervous
- 1:43system if it has a slower tempo. And upbeat music can increase
- 1:48our energy. It can improve our mood.
- 1:51There are therapists that even use music as part of treatment
- 1:54to help clients process their emotion and build coping skills
- 1:58that express their feelings. You know, put words to the
- 2:01difficult feelings. But here's something really
- 2:05interesting. Music doesn't always make us
- 2:08feel happy. It helps us feel understood.
- 2:13Sometimes that song we need to hear isn't because it's
- 2:17cheerful, it's because it says something like someone else has
- 2:21felt this too. It's the sense of connection
- 2:26that can be so healing. So next time you're feeling
- 2:30stressed or overwhelmed or stuck, consider creating a
- 2:35playlist and create it with intention.
- 2:37You know, ask yourself, what do I need right now?
- 2:39What songs do I need to hear right now to feel comfort or
- 2:43energy or hope or reflection or whatever you're looking for?
- 2:47Because sometimes self-care really isn't that complicated.
- 2:50Sometimes it's just about pressing play, You know, music
- 2:54may not solve every problem, but it can help us navigate our
- 2:58emotions. It can help us feel less alone
- 3:01and reconnect with ourselves. And that's a powerful tool for
- 3:06mental health. The Life Live Better podcast
- 3:09thanks you for joining us for this mental health moment.
- 3:12Until next time, take care of your mind and your music.
- 3:17It's the only one we've got right?
- 3:19And don't forget that knowledge leads to a life lived better.
