- 0:00hi I'm James deaker the yield doctor and
- 0:03this is stories of yield during a
- 0:06Consulting engagement with a New
- 0:08york-based Media company I learned an
- 0:11invaluable lesson about how even the
- 0:14best yield analytics in the world is
- 0:16wasted if there aren't good foundational
- 0:19operations in place our project was to
- 0:23help a company optimize the prices on
- 0:26the rate card the rate card was crucial
- 0:29it was supposed to be the guiding tool
- 0:31for the sales team dictating the prices
- 0:34that they would offer to their clients
- 0:36we dove into the project worked closely
- 0:39with the executive team to analyze all
- 0:41the price history look at products there
- 0:44were intense debate and number crunching
- 0:46as we examine Trends competitive pricing
- 0:49and potential price shifts but as we
- 0:52shifted through the data something felt
- 0:55off I noticed that the prices that the
- 0:58executive team would ch changing didn't
- 1:01seem to match any price change in the
- 1:04historical data log in other words what
- 1:07things were selling for in the market it
- 1:09was as if the changes to the rate card
- 1:12were irrelevant so on a hunch I asked
- 1:15one of the analyst to spend some time in
- 1:17the sales area observing how the rate
- 1:20card was being used what they came back
- 1:23with was jaw
- 1:25dropping the sales reps still had the
- 1:28old rate cards some over a year out of
- 1:31date tacked up on their cubicle walls
- 1:34they were still referencing those
- 1:37outdated documents to quote prices to
- 1:40the clients so despite the fact that the
- 1:43executive team was analyzing revising
- 1:46and approving new rate cards for months
- 1:49the sales team was stuck in the past
- 1:51using prices that no longer reflected
- 1:54the company's updated strategy the
- 1:58problem wasn't the quality of the
- 2:00analysis or the strategy behind the rate
- 2:03card it was the breakdown in the
- 2:05communication process within the sales
- 2:07team the new rate card should have been
- 2:10a better reflection of the prices in the
- 2:12market but the new pricing was
- 2:15irrelevant to the salespeople and to
- 2:17their
- 2:18customers in the end the real challenge
- 2:21wasn't the data or the pricing model it
- 2:24was the disconnect between the strategy
- 2:27and the
- 2:28execution the gap in the process cost
- 2:31that company a lot of money both in
- 2:33terms of wasted management time and lost
- 2:36revenue and for me the yield management
- 2:39lesson that I learned was to make sure
- 2:41that you understand the underlying
- 2:43processes before you dive into the data
