- 0:13Speaker 1: All right. There he is.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Are you, first of all, before we Max Muncy joining
- 0:15Speaker 2: us from the Los Angeles Dodgers, are you hung over?
- 0:18Speaker 1: Are you sober? Are you recovered?
- 0:23Speaker 3: Uh, you know, we're, we're, we're good. We're in a
- 0:24Speaker 3: good spot. We, uh, got a nice little workout today
- 0:27Speaker 3: and then, uh, we'll see in Milwaukee.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Do you guys have, you guys have today?
- 0:33Speaker 3: What's up?
- 0:35Speaker 1: You guys leave today. Yeah.
- 0:37Speaker 3: We're going to get there early.
- 0:38Speaker 4: Check in and, uh, um, You know, just make sure
- 0:42Speaker 4: you're ready to play.
- 0:46Speaker 5: Do you need somebody to talk smack about you guys?
- 0:48Speaker 5: Do you guys need some bulletin board material? Is that
- 0:50Speaker 5: how it goes? Like the off day, you need somebody
- 0:52Speaker 5: to be like, the Dodgers, they're washed or whatever. We're
- 0:56Speaker 5: talking about, I don't know if you could hear it.
- 0:59Speaker 5: We're talking about bulletin board material. Do you guys need
- 1:01Speaker 5: bulletin board material? Or is it something that it does
- 1:04Speaker 5: like blip your radar a little bit?
- 1:08Speaker 3: No, you don't need that. And it's like you guys
- 1:11Speaker 3: are saying in postseason.
- 1:12Speaker 4: If you need any extra any extra giddy up, you're
- 1:16Speaker 4: probably in a bad spot.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Yeah, we don't we don't need it.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Hey, Max, when Dave Roberts said brought up Kike and
- 1:25Speaker 2: Kike said his line like this is what I do.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I'm not going to use the exact quote because there's
- 1:29Speaker 2: some bad words in there. uh did you look up
- 1:32Speaker 2: and say what about me this is what i do
- 1:33Speaker 2: in the postseason too i just hit homers every single
- 1:36Speaker 2: game and play make unbelievable plays a third when you
- 1:38Speaker 2: put me out there skip.
- 1:42Speaker 4: No no uh you know that's that's kind of the
- 1:45Speaker 4: beauty of where i've been at you know in this
- 1:47Speaker 4: organization on this roster a little bit under the radar
- 1:49Speaker 4: that's how i've always liked it and uh you know
- 1:51Speaker 4: i i don't mind it i'm gonna keep going out
- 1:53Speaker 4: there and doing my thing and you know as long
- 1:54Speaker 4: as the team wins it's.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Always been the most important thing to me and You know,
- 1:58Speaker 3: it's fun. It's fun for me.
- 2:00Speaker 4: I feel like, you know, you're kind of like just the,
- 2:04Speaker 4: you know, the hidden giant a little bit. They worry
- 2:06Speaker 4: about everyone else and you can kind of go in
- 2:07Speaker 4: there and stink attack them a little bit. So for me,
- 2:09Speaker 4: it's always been fun. I like my role.
- 2:11Speaker 3: I've always understood it and I always loved it. I'm
- 2:14Speaker 3: happy with where I'm at.
- 2:16Speaker 4: And then the Kike thing, that's a, you know, that
- 2:18Speaker 4: was a, it's a little bit of an inside joke
- 2:20Speaker 4: on the quote. So I don't want people to think
- 2:22Speaker 4: that that was a bad thing of him saying. Yeah,
- 2:25Speaker 4: it's a little bit of an inside joke. It was awesome.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Bad thing. That was awesome.
- 2:29Speaker 2: It was so, I was like a perfect, it was
- 2:31Speaker 2: exactly how I thought Kike Hernandez, if someone said that
- 2:34Speaker 2: to him would answer the question, he nailed it.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Like to me, it's what I do. Like, you know,
- 2:40Speaker 1: like that, that was awesome. It was perfect.
- 2:44Speaker 5: I got one more.
- 2:45Speaker 3: All right. What'd you get?
- 2:48Speaker 5: His interview post game. Is he a hundred percent like
- 2:51Speaker 5: his interview post game? Cause he's been on here a
- 2:53Speaker 5: couple of times. He said, he goes, Well, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 5: because the question was, you know, your postseason Kike, October Kike.
- 3:01Speaker 5: And he was like, I really don't like talking about
- 3:04Speaker 5: it because I feel like I'm getting lucky. Like this
- 3:05Speaker 5: dude has been doing it for like 350 at-bats. Does
- 3:09Speaker 5: he really walk around and think that? Obviously he has
- 3:12Speaker 5: to have confidence. But when I hear that, it makes
- 3:15Speaker 5: me laugh.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, there's just certain– there's certain guys that
- 3:19Speaker 4: when this time of year rolls.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Around, they know how to lock it in a little
- 3:22Speaker 3: bit more.
- 3:23Speaker 4: And he's definitely one of them. You know, it goes
- 3:26Speaker 4: to the preparation, goes to mindset, it goes to experience.
- 3:30Speaker 4: There's a whole bunch of things that go into it,
- 3:32Speaker 4: but he has all of it. And, you know, there's
- 3:35Speaker 4: arguably no one more prepared than he is in the postseason,
- 3:37Speaker 4: just the amount of homework and stuff that he does
- 3:39Speaker 4: and his ability to lock it in this time of year.
- 3:42Speaker 3: It's second to none. And, you know, it's very infectious.
- 3:45Speaker 4: There's a lot of guys that try to see what
- 3:48Speaker 4: he does and they start realizing how much it works.
- 3:50Speaker 4: And so they start trying to take after him. And,
- 3:51Speaker 4: you know, it's just one of the key pieces that
- 3:53Speaker 4: we have.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Do you feel like making a move like– you said it.
- 3:57Speaker 5: You're like, oh, I came off the bench. I didn't
- 3:59Speaker 5: start two of the games. Do you feel like bringing–
- 4:03Speaker 5: or putting Max Muncy on the bench is a panic move?
- 4:07Speaker 5: And the reason I ask that is because a lot
- 4:09Speaker 5: of managers that are now eliminated didn't make moves that
- 4:13Speaker 5: the manager– that people were like, wow, we should have
- 4:15Speaker 5: done this. Isn't all the moves in the postseason– to
- 4:20Speaker 5: win no matter who's doing what and no matter where
- 4:23Speaker 5: they are or what they have done it's to win
- 4:25Speaker 5: that night.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Yeah you're trying to win you know every single game
- 4:29Speaker 4: but you you can't you can't ever plan ahead with
- 4:33Speaker 4: the exception of like a few moments you have to
- 4:35Speaker 4: win in that moment right there you can't try to
- 4:38Speaker 4: say well we're trying to set up this and that
- 4:40Speaker 4: and you know we're trying to move forward with the
- 4:41Speaker 4: you have to do everything you can for that night
- 4:43Speaker 4: to when you saw it last night with the guardians
- 4:45Speaker 4: they brought in gavin williams to close out the game
- 4:47Speaker 4: um you know you would think he'd be starting game
- 4:49Speaker 4: five but you have to do what you have to,
- 4:51Speaker 4: to win that game. And you know, for, for, for
- 4:55Speaker 4: me coming off the bench, it makes it that much
- 4:57Speaker 4: tougher for the opposing manager, because the way doc writes
- 5:01Speaker 4: the lineups, you have certain spots where you'd slot me in,
- 5:04Speaker 4: in a pinch hit role. And it makes the opposing
- 5:05Speaker 4: manager have to think, you know, do I want to
- 5:07Speaker 4: bring in this reliever to face these two righties? Knowing
- 5:10Speaker 4: one of them is going to get pinch hit for,
- 5:11Speaker 4: do I keep the lefty in there, which is a
- 5:12Speaker 4: better matchup for some of our guys. And, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 4: I think you saw that in game three, They used
- 5:17Speaker 4: every single lefty they had in the pen before going
- 5:20Speaker 4: to a righty. And, you know, that's just part of
- 5:25Speaker 4: the chess match that Doc likes to play. And, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 4: I think it makes it easier on him knowing that
- 5:30Speaker 4: I'm on board with it 100% of the way. I'm
- 5:32Speaker 4: not complaining about, you know, whether I'm starting or not.
- 5:36Speaker 4: You go out there, you're going to have an impact
- 5:38Speaker 4: on the game either way.
- 5:41Speaker 2: So you're saying you wouldn't be upset if you didn't start. Oh,
- 5:44Speaker 2: because there's been players that have come out and said,
- 5:46Speaker 2: I'm mad if I don't start. But that's good to
- 5:48Speaker 2: hear that that's not you, Max. I would never ever
- 5:51Speaker 2: expect you to say something like that. The other day
- 5:56Speaker 2: when you guys clinched, it was Marcus's birthday. Did you
- 5:59Speaker 2: guys do anything special for Marcus after you guys clinched?
- 6:04Speaker 3: Yeah, we got off the plane and flew back home.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Laughter That was it? There was no singing? There was
- 6:12Speaker 1: no anything? No cake?
- 6:13Speaker 2: And Marcus is Mookie, by the way, so for people
- 6:15Speaker 2: out there that don't know. Nobody did anything special for him?
- 6:19Speaker 2: Like sing to him on the plane or anything?
- 6:23Speaker 4: No, our gift to him was we were going to
- 6:25Speaker 4: soak him in champagne.
- 6:25Speaker 3: We told him that before the game, and we made
- 6:27Speaker 3: that one happen.
- 6:28Speaker 5: All right, that's a good gift. That's a great gift.
- 6:32Speaker 5: I feel like you can just do what you want.
- 6:34Speaker 5: You saw Scoogle's interview, or maybe you didn't, or maybe
- 6:37Speaker 5: you were part of it. Is there something with you guys,
- 6:40Speaker 5: or is there a culprit of the beers in places
- 6:44Speaker 5: he can't mention? Is that like this year's thing for
- 6:48Speaker 5: you guys, or is somebody the culprit of that?
- 6:53Speaker 3: I don't know how that started, man. I'm not going
- 6:55Speaker 3: to lie.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I think there's a video of Kike shoving a
- 6:58Speaker 4: champagne bottle down someone's pants when we clinched the division. Yeah,
- 7:02Speaker 4: I don't know who or how that started, but that's
- 7:04Speaker 4: kind of become a thing this year. Yeah, that interview
- 7:07Speaker 4: was great. with, with David Vasse who we all, we
- 7:11Speaker 4: all love and we love to joke around with. Um,
- 7:14Speaker 4: and it just cracked me up that he was trying
- 7:16Speaker 4: to get a question out for like five minutes and
- 7:18Speaker 4: he just couldn't, he just couldn't do it. And, uh,
- 7:20Speaker 4: you know, Scooble was great in that interview also, just
- 7:23Speaker 4: some of the comments he was making and, uh, yeah, it's, it's, it's,
- 7:27Speaker 4: those moments are fun.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:29Speaker 2: By the way, did you see the video of someone
- 7:32Speaker 2: was naked behind the, to plastic. And as you guys kept,
- 7:37Speaker 2: all you saw was two cheeks.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know who it was. I
- 7:40Speaker 1: don't want to know who it was, but all you saw,
- 7:42Speaker 1: everyone was like.
- 7:43Speaker 3: I'm not going to tell you. I'm not going to
- 7:44Speaker 3: tell you who it was. I know.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I don't want to know. Please don't, please don't tell
- 7:48Speaker 1: me who it was.
- 7:48Speaker 2: It was just absolutely hilarious that the camera was perfectly
- 7:51Speaker 2: positioned that every guy that walked in was like, wait, there's,
- 7:54Speaker 2: I just see two cheeks behind the plastic sheet.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I mean, talk about.
- 7:59Speaker 4: So on that, on that note, I want to ask
- 8:01Speaker 4: you a question, AJ jockstrap, With no sliders underneath.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Never.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Never. Never. Never in my life. I can't.
- 8:13Speaker 2: So I was a, I was a sliders, the old
- 8:15Speaker 2: tool shed, cotton sliders, jock strap over it.
- 8:18Speaker 1: And that was it.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I didn't put anything else on. That was my, and
- 8:21Speaker 2: then I put socks on and let's go to battle. Right.
- 8:23Speaker 3: But the people, the tool sheds are still key.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 2: And by the way, people now put the, put the, uh,
- 8:30Speaker 2: just the jock. I would see people just wear a
- 8:31Speaker 2: jock and go, I'm like, ow, as a catcher, man,
- 8:34Speaker 2: that's going to rub down there a little bit. I
- 8:36Speaker 2: don't need that rash coming home being like, how'd you
- 8:39Speaker 2: get that rash, honey?
- 8:43Speaker 4: Yeah, that to me is one of the weirdest things
- 8:46Speaker 4: about that.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no sliders underneath. Yeah, this got way off
- 8:51Speaker 3: topic real quick. Sorry about that one.
- 8:53Speaker 1: No, no, no, no.
- 8:54Speaker 5: This is what we're here for. Because, like, you can't
- 8:59Speaker 5: do that. I've never, yeah. The only time I've ever
- 9:01Speaker 5: done that is when you do a tarp slide and
- 9:03Speaker 5: nobody's in the stadium. But anyway, you can't play a
- 9:05Speaker 5: game that way. Josue DiPaolo, his cork popped early. Was
- 9:12Speaker 5: that a party foul? Did you guys get on him
- 9:14Speaker 5: for a party foul? I mean, I didn't even know
- 9:16Speaker 5: he was allowed to drink alcohol. I thought he was
- 9:18Speaker 5: under 21. No, he's 21. He's 21. okay, who made
- 9:23Speaker 5: it just barely, just barely made it. Do you guys
- 9:25Speaker 5: get on him for that? Or is there something else
- 9:27Speaker 5: as a rookie, but who's also a huge, like could
- 9:30Speaker 5: be a huge piece of this team moving forward. How
- 9:34Speaker 5: do you guys treat him during this stretch? I just
- 9:36Speaker 5: saw that video.
- 9:38Speaker 4: I was waiting for it to happen because, uh, I
- 9:41Speaker 4: saw him shaking the bottle the whole time. Doc was talking, um,
- 9:44Speaker 4: you know, he still had the top on there, but
- 9:45Speaker 4: he kept shaking it. And I was just like, man,
- 9:47Speaker 4: that thing's gonna pop any minute. And then it popped
- 9:48Speaker 4: right into his face. So I just started, I just
- 9:50Speaker 4: started laughing. Um, You know, just a young guy, super
- 9:54Speaker 4: excited to get going, but you can't start shaking the
- 9:56Speaker 4: bottle until it's right at the time.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Otherwise it's going to, to pop real quick.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Max, usually the old guys have the problem with popping
- 10:04Speaker 2: too early, but that's a whole different thing.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Usually the young guys can keep it in.
- 10:08Speaker 2: But speaking of DePaula, DePaula and Freeland have had this
- 10:13Speaker 2: Max Muncy candle that they are– St. Muncy that they're–
- 10:16Speaker 2: are you trying to steal the White Sox Pope's thunder?
- 10:18Speaker 2: What's happening with this thing?
- 10:21Speaker 1: No.
- 10:21Speaker 4: So that goes back to, you know, I did the
- 10:24Speaker 4: podcast with Mookie Betts, his, his podcast, you know, is
- 10:28Speaker 4: it off base or on base?
- 10:29Speaker 3: I can't remember what it's called, but.
- 10:32Speaker 4: One of the segments we were talking about, there was
- 10:35Speaker 4: a Freddie Freeman candle that someone had sent in or
- 10:39Speaker 4: sent a picture in. And we were talking about how
- 10:42Speaker 4: much we would love for there to be like 30
- 10:44Speaker 4: of those candles in Freddie's locker, because we know how
- 10:46Speaker 4: much he would hate it. And, we were on the
- 10:49Speaker 4: road during that podcast. And when we got back home,
- 10:52Speaker 4: there was a candle in my locker. Uh, and I
- 10:55Speaker 4: think there was a couple other people also, but, um,
- 10:58Speaker 4: so I just showed up in the locker and Alex
- 11:00Speaker 4: Freeland grabbed it during the, the home series and was
- 11:03Speaker 4: holding it up and I didn't know he was doing it. And,
- 11:05Speaker 4: you know, he was just holding it up and I
- 11:06Speaker 4: hit the home run and he's kind of taken it
- 11:09Speaker 4: and ran with it since then. And, uh, you know, he's, he's,
- 11:11Speaker 4: he's been having a real good time with it. Um,
- 11:14Speaker 4: you know, as I was saying, after the, after we
- 11:17Speaker 4: clinched in Atlanta, um, You know, the guys that aren't
- 11:20Speaker 4: active on the roster, they're equally as important, you know,
- 11:24Speaker 4: to getting everyone in the right mindset.
- 11:27Speaker 3: We kind of call them the vibe guys, the vibe crew.
- 11:30Speaker 4: We've been doing it the last couple of years and,
- 11:32Speaker 4: you know, they play just as much a role as
- 11:34Speaker 4: anyone in helping us win because they keep the dugout
- 11:36Speaker 4: in the right mindset. They keep, you know, the energy high.
- 11:39Speaker 4: It doesn't matter what the situation is in the game.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Those are the guys that are out there making sure
- 11:42Speaker 4: everyone's staying positive and, you know, trying to bring the
- 11:45Speaker 4: energy in the dugout. And, you know, for us, a
- 11:48Speaker 4: team like us who doesn't necessarily always play with energy
- 11:51Speaker 4: or in a regular season, just to have those guys
- 11:52Speaker 4: that are constantly bringing the energy up in the post season,
- 11:56Speaker 4: you know, they, they're just as important as anyone else
- 11:59Speaker 4: in my mind. They're, they're part of the reason that
- 12:01Speaker 4: we keep winning is we just, we found a, you know,
- 12:03Speaker 4: a formula that works and, you know, obviously they want
- 12:06Speaker 4: to be active. They want to be playing. They want
- 12:08Speaker 4: to be out there helping us win, but they're helping
- 12:10Speaker 4: us just as much by keeping the energy high in
- 12:13Speaker 4: the dugout. And, you know, they're, they're vital to us.
- 12:17Speaker 5: I love that you said that just make my career
- 12:19Speaker 5: just validated my entire career of not playing. So I
- 12:21Speaker 5: appreciate that.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Can you explain?
- 12:23Speaker 5: Cause not everybody's been to a 2018 to probably 2022
- 12:30Speaker 5: game at Dodger stadium for Max Muncy. Why it says
- 12:33Speaker 5: funky on your chain, on your candle. If you can
- 12:35Speaker 5: see the picture, I'm sure you've seen the.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Candle, but. Yeah. So the, the, DJ Sevier and Dieter
- 12:46Speaker 3: Ruhl and those guys.
- 12:48Speaker 4: Started whenever I hit a home run they started playing
- 12:51Speaker 4: Brass Monkey song from the Beastie Boys and they would
- 12:56Speaker 4: they started changing the lyrics to it to say instead
- 12:59Speaker 4: of Funky Monkey they started saying Funky Muncy and they
- 13:03Speaker 4: ran with that for several years so anytime I hit
- 13:05Speaker 4: a home run they'd play that song and it had
- 13:07Speaker 4: the lyrics changed on it but I'm not sure if
- 13:10Speaker 4: they got in trouble for that one or not because
- 13:11Speaker 4: they haven't done it for a couple of years but
- 13:13Speaker 4: That's how Funky Muncy came about.
- 13:16Speaker 5: When we played you guys in 18, that is still
- 13:18Speaker 5: ingrained in my 17 and 19 year old son's head.
- 13:23Speaker 5: And they would tell me about it, but you know,
- 13:25Speaker 5: I don't always hear the music and stuff when I'm playing.
- 13:28Speaker 5: So afterwards, I mean, to this day, I told him
- 13:31Speaker 5: Max Muncy is coming on the, and they're coming on
- 13:33Speaker 5: the show and they go, ah, Funky Muncy, now Funky Muncy.
- 13:38Speaker 5: And I was like, so cool that it came up
- 13:40Speaker 5: on the chain. I got a question for you. You
- 13:42Speaker 5: guys are always in the playoff. You'll always be in
- 13:44Speaker 5: the playoffs until you quit playing because I think you
- 13:47Speaker 5: are the stir that stirs the drink, the straw that
- 13:50Speaker 5: stirs the drink. But what if you guys got to
- 13:53Speaker 5: choose your opponent? In the new proposal by Major League Baseball,
- 13:57Speaker 5: they're thinking of having the highest seed choose your opponent
- 14:02Speaker 5: for the next round of the playoffs.
- 14:05Speaker 4: I get it, but I say this all the time.
- 14:08Speaker 4: It doesn't matter who you play in the playoffs. Everyone
- 14:10Speaker 4: is good.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Everyone can go on a run. Anyone can get hot.
- 14:13Speaker 4: You can run into a certain pitching staff in just
- 14:15Speaker 4: a couple of games. You know, it really doesn't matter. And,
- 14:18Speaker 4: you know, I point to last year with us against
- 14:20Speaker 4: the Reds. You know, everyone wants to say how much
- 14:24Speaker 4: of a mismatch that was. But like Hunter Green could
- 14:26Speaker 4: have easily thrown seven innings, you know, one hit baseball
- 14:28Speaker 4: against us. And all of a sudden we're in a hole.
- 14:30Speaker 4: You know, it just it doesn't matter who you play.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Any team in the postseason is good. You play 162
- 14:37Speaker 4: for a reason because it weeds out. you know weeds
- 14:40Speaker 4: out the frauds and the teams that are actually legit
- 14:42Speaker 4: makes the postseason and um you know so the idea
- 14:45Speaker 4: of picking your opponent i understand it but i just
- 14:49Speaker 4: don't think it would work out how people would want
- 14:50Speaker 4: i mean there's been several years where we felt like
- 14:53Speaker 4: we had the favorable matchup and then we went out
- 14:55Speaker 4: there and got stomped you know and it's uh it's
- 14:57Speaker 4: just it's just how it goes when you when you
- 14:59Speaker 4: get talked.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Over max you know you guys would have picked If
- 15:04Speaker 2: you could go this year, you would have picked an
- 15:05Speaker 2: AL team. You would have said, hey, we'll take the
- 15:07Speaker 2: Astros in the first round. Then we'll take the Guardians
- 15:10Speaker 2: or White Sox in the second round. If you could
- 15:13Speaker 2: switch leagues, I'm just saying. But in the National League,
- 15:15Speaker 2: I would think this is– listen, this is the matchup
- 15:17Speaker 2: I want to see. This is like the heavyweight fight
- 15:19Speaker 2: in the National League. The two best teams, the two
- 15:22Speaker 2: teams you swept the Brewers last year. The Brewers are ready.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Murph's all fired up. Man spent four days with Murph.
- 15:29Speaker 2: He's got all his little catchphrases ready to rock and
- 15:31Speaker 2: roll against the Dodgers. They've got Mizorowski.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Of course. I mean, he's, I mean, I don't know
- 15:36Speaker 1: how well, you know, Murphy's hilarious by the way.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Oh, I love Murph. I talked to him all the time.
- 15:40Speaker 3: I love him.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Um, but you know, they've got Miz lined up. They've
- 15:43Speaker 2: got Henderson. You guys have Scooble and Snell. Why is
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yamamoto not pitching game one?
- 15:51Speaker 1: Uh, well, I'm not, you know, I stuck that in
- 15:54Speaker 1: there on you. Yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 3: You're trying to get me in trouble. Uh, I'm not
- 16:00Speaker 3: the guy to, uh, ask on that one.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Um, But if I was to give an educated guess,
- 16:07Speaker 4: it just has to do with rest patterns and, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff. You know, you kind of
- 16:15Speaker 4: saw that with the Braves a little bit with Chris Sale.
- 16:17Speaker 4: You guys pitch all year on a certain rest pattern
- 16:21Speaker 4: and a certain schedule, and you don't necessarily want to
- 16:22Speaker 4: change that just because it's the postseason and get guys
- 16:25Speaker 4: out of rhythm. Not saying they can't do it. Obviously,
- 16:27Speaker 4: we saw Yamamoto throw on no days rest last year.
- 16:31Speaker 4: But you want to have, you know, you want to
- 16:34Speaker 4: go about things the best way you can. And when
- 16:36Speaker 4: you're able to line things up as, as we are,
- 16:39Speaker 4: and as the brewers are, you're going to line them
- 16:40Speaker 4: up to what works best to your advantage that you
- 16:43Speaker 4: think at least.
- 16:44Speaker 3: And that's how we're doing things.
- 16:46Speaker 1: All right.
- 16:47Speaker 5: You guys play Sunday against the Mizorowski. Are you preparing
- 16:52Speaker 5: for your Mizorowski at bats? Or is that like, Oh,
- 16:55Speaker 5: I got to shut it all off until like, it's
- 16:58Speaker 5: like we play the day before. So you get ready
- 17:00Speaker 5: on Saturday. Like, is there too much, preparation going into
- 17:04Speaker 5: game one?
- 17:06Speaker 4: Um, no, I mean, the, the thing with us is you,
- 17:12Speaker 4: you know, you kind of leave the starter for the
- 17:14Speaker 4: day of you spend the days leading up to the series,
- 17:16Speaker 4: preparing for everyone else, the bullpen, you know, defense, kind
- 17:21Speaker 4: of all that stuff. And we've always done a good
- 17:23Speaker 4: job of that to where, you know, you're, you're focused
- 17:26Speaker 4: on the entire team aspect. And then when it's the
- 17:28Speaker 4: day of that's when you focus on the starter, because, um, yeah,
- 17:31Speaker 4: I feel like if you're just focused on the one
- 17:32Speaker 4: guy for like three straight days, then all of a
- 17:34Speaker 4: sudden you're, you know, you have your approach for that guy,
- 17:36Speaker 4: but then it's hard to completely flip the approach the
- 17:39Speaker 4: next day for whoever you're facing that day. And so,
- 17:41Speaker 4: you know, we've always done a good job of kind
- 17:43Speaker 4: of just, you know, you leave the starter for the
- 17:47Speaker 4: day of and, you know, you go about it that way.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Max, how do you prepare?
- 17:52Speaker 2: I mean, I know Miz and we heard all about like,
- 17:56Speaker 2: the Red Sox were in Tampa using the trajectory, trying
- 17:58Speaker 2: to get ready for Cam Schlittler, and he shoved it
- 18:00Speaker 2: up their butt, right? Is there a way you can
- 18:03Speaker 2: simulate what the Miz does? Because he comes from a
- 18:05Speaker 2: lower angle, even though he's tall, he comes from like
- 18:08Speaker 2: a really weird low angle, and it kind of just
- 18:10Speaker 2: almost upshoots the ball.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And again, it's 104, 105 miles an hour.
- 18:14Speaker 2: So is there, does the trajectory machine, can it simulate
- 18:18Speaker 2: even all that with the difference in how he throws
- 18:21Speaker 2: compared to what it is in real life?
- 18:23Speaker 4: Look, the trajectory is amazing. It can mimic pitch shapes
- 18:27Speaker 4: really well. It changes the, you know, the arm angle. Um,
- 18:31Speaker 4: so you're getting, you're getting release points and, and pitch
- 18:34Speaker 4: shapes and all of that stuff, uh, where the trajectory fails.
- 18:37Speaker 4: And I think you guys would understand this, like when
- 18:40Speaker 4: it comes to off speed, right. It'll have the exact
- 18:42Speaker 4: same shape, but it's not, uh, you know, none of
- 18:46Speaker 4: the off speed ever has the parachute effect on a machine.
- 18:49Speaker 4: There's just no way to create that just the way
- 18:51Speaker 4: guys can throw certain pitches. And the other thing I
- 18:54Speaker 4: can't create is extension. Um, so the machine can move,
- 18:57Speaker 4: you know, up and down side to side, but it
- 18:59Speaker 4: can't move any, it can't move forward. Um, and so
- 19:03Speaker 4: the extension part is where it's the tricky one. And, uh,
- 19:07Speaker 4: you know, just as the years have gone on, the
- 19:08Speaker 4: more we've understood, uh, you know, we understand extension. There's
- 19:11Speaker 4: just not any way to really replicate that. You can
- 19:13Speaker 4: move the machine closer and it still doesn't feel the
- 19:15Speaker 4: same as when you're facing a guy with extension. Just,
- 19:17Speaker 4: you know, it just feels like he's releasing the ball
- 19:19Speaker 4: in the catcher's glove basically. And, um, you know, it's,
- 19:22Speaker 4: it's a difficult challenge for sure.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Max, I'm sure you saw, because I know you pay
- 19:27Speaker 2: attention to the other series besides your own. I'm sure
- 19:30Speaker 2: you saw the whole thing with the Brewers and Mason
- 19:32Speaker 2: Miller thinking he's tipping and that whole thing in the
- 19:34Speaker 2: ninth inning when he came in every time. And I'm
- 19:37Speaker 2: not asking you to get into specifics with certain guys,
- 19:40Speaker 2: but how prevalent is this going on? Because you talk
- 19:47Speaker 2: to teams, they say, oh, our guy's not tipping, but
- 19:49Speaker 2: then he comes out and next time and he completely
- 19:51Speaker 2: changes where his glove is or whatever after this is
- 19:54Speaker 2: brought up so how much do you guys i mean
- 19:57Speaker 2: how much do teams not just the dodgers how much
- 19:59Speaker 2: do you think teams take a time to look at
- 20:01Speaker 2: this and try to find the smallest edge.
- 20:05Speaker 4: Yeah i think it's becoming uh you know way more
- 20:07Speaker 4: and more prevalent um you know, I've heard of, I've
- 20:11Speaker 4: heard of a couple of teams and I'm not naming
- 20:13Speaker 4: teams or names, but I've heard of a couple of
- 20:15Speaker 4: teams starting to use AI programs to.
- 20:19Speaker 3: You know, you plug in, you plug in pitches and the.
- 20:22Speaker 4: AI program points differences and, you know, where the glove
- 20:24Speaker 4: is and all this other stuff and hand position and all,
- 20:26Speaker 4: you know, and all this kind of stuff. And I
- 20:28Speaker 4: think that's what you've been starting to see with some
- 20:30Speaker 4: of the first and third base coaches. You know, I
- 20:34Speaker 4: think a lot of that has been going on and
- 20:37Speaker 4: you know, it's, it's just part of the game.
- 20:39Speaker 3: It's always been part of the game.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Obviously the technology is a lot greater now, so you
- 20:42Speaker 4: can get advantages a little bit easier, but.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just one of those things that's always been
- 20:47Speaker 3: part of the game.
- 20:48Speaker 4: And, you know, that's part of where being a baseball
- 20:50Speaker 4: player comes into the equation. I don't think being a
- 20:55Speaker 4: baseball player gets talked about enough. Obviously there's a lot
- 20:57Speaker 4: of guys that have talent. A lot of guys have skills,
- 20:59Speaker 4: but being like a true baseball player and, you know,
- 21:02Speaker 4: you guys, you guys played back in the day when
- 21:04Speaker 4: there was no pitch calm and, you know, like, figuring
- 21:07Speaker 4: out signs on second base used to be an art
- 21:10Speaker 4: like being able to you know okay i'm gonna look
- 21:12Speaker 4: at the first three signs memorize those we'll pitch the
- 21:15Speaker 4: throw okay it wasn't any of those let's go to
- 21:17Speaker 4: the next three maybe it's gator signs maybe he's chasing
- 21:19Speaker 4: too like that wasn't art and the guys that were
- 21:22Speaker 4: really good at that have become really good at pitch
- 21:24Speaker 4: tipping and um you know it's just one of those
- 21:26Speaker 4: things where it's just it's kind of an art within
- 21:29Speaker 4: the game that i don't think it's talked about enough.
- 21:32Speaker 5: What do you get more i'm not like go through
- 21:34Speaker 5: your head and think about all the tipping and everything
- 21:37Speaker 5: do you guys get more from pitchers or get more
- 21:40Speaker 5: from catchers or position players moving ahead of time.
- 21:46Speaker 4: I mean there's a little bit of everything there was
- 21:48Speaker 4: actually a situation uh for me in um game two
- 21:51Speaker 4: against the braves where i was facing uh uh you
- 21:55Speaker 4: know fuentes and i had a two strike count and
- 22:00Speaker 4: uh you know obviously he has an elite fastball um
- 22:04Speaker 4: I look out and right before the pitch, I see
- 22:06Speaker 4: Dubon kind of sprint to his left. And so in
- 22:09Speaker 4: my head, I went, Oh, he's throwing a fastball away.
- 22:11Speaker 4: And then he threw a change up. And so Dubon
- 22:13Speaker 4: actually fooled me with that. And I don't know if
- 22:14Speaker 4: that was on purpose or not. Um, you know, so
- 22:17Speaker 4: for me, I.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Look for everything.
- 22:18Speaker 4: And so when you get something like that, it's kind
- 22:20Speaker 4: of like, Oh man. And, uh, you know, I kind
- 22:22Speaker 4: of shot myself in the foot with that one. Cause you, you,
- 22:24Speaker 4: you take a chance, but sometimes when you're facing guys
- 22:26Speaker 4: that have a beat stuff, you have to take chances.
- 22:28Speaker 4: You know, you, you have to flip the coin a
- 22:30Speaker 4: little bit and, um, You know, with how hard everyone
- 22:33Speaker 4: is throwing these days, you can't really just react. Like,
- 22:37Speaker 4: you almost have to guess pitches. And when you're doing that,
- 22:39Speaker 4: you have to take any advantage that you can.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Agreed. Agreed. Wait, what? My hat changed.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 22:48Speaker 1: I don't know if Max can see that or not. But, Max,
- 22:52Speaker 1: thank you. Max, thank you so much for doing this.
- 22:56Speaker 1: We appreciate it. You're one of our favorite guests.
- 22:59Speaker 2: And by the way, if you have a tip, don't
- 23:01Speaker 2: tell anybody because if they change teams and they'll tell
- 23:03Speaker 2: the pitcher and then you'll lose that tip. So just,
- 23:05Speaker 2: you know, you kind of got it. It's kind of
- 23:07Speaker 2: like one of those weird things. Like you can't tell everybody.
- 23:09Speaker 2: And who do you trust that you can tell? Oh,
- 23:11Speaker 2: I can't tell that person because he's a free agent
- 23:13Speaker 2: and he's going to run it. So just if you
- 23:15Speaker 2: do find one, you just don't, don't.
- 23:17Speaker 5: Or the pitch come or the pitch come. If somebody's
- 23:20Speaker 5: pitch comes too loud, don't tell them, Max. Okay. That
- 23:23Speaker 5: happened this year. I don't know if you saw that.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:27Speaker 4: I don't know how that happens anymore. We've, we've been, we're,
- 23:29Speaker 4: we're a couple of years into this pitch comp thing now.
- 23:31Speaker 4: And I think, uh, you know, if you have a
- 23:34Speaker 4: two out or someone can hear it, then, uh, you're
- 23:36Speaker 4: really just oblivious to it because, uh, yeah, that's something
- 23:39Speaker 4: that I feel like we're very mindful of that, you know,
- 23:43Speaker 4: our first baseman that habit for pickoffs and stuff, they're standing,
- 23:46Speaker 4: you know, five feet away from the bag while, while the,
- 23:49Speaker 4: you know, the calls coming in and then they shuffle.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Back to the bag.
- 23:51Speaker 4: And, uh, yeah, that's, uh, that's, that, that's one where
- 23:55Speaker 4: you're just oblivious. If you, have something as stupid as
- 23:57Speaker 4: your pitch comments too loud.
- 23:59Speaker 1: But by the way, Freddie, Freddie don't have no pitch calm.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Freddie's just standing over. He's not even paying attention. I've time.
- 24:03Speaker 2: He's talking to the other guys. Hey man, nice hit, dude. Oh,
- 24:06Speaker 2: you've just drove in the go ahead run, dude.
- 24:07Speaker 1: That's cool. In the night.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 5: Give me a hug.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:10Speaker 2: So I'm so happy for you. So Freddie's not paying
- 24:12Speaker 2: attention to no pitch calm, by the way. And also
- 24:14Speaker 2: the reason I.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Love Freddie's mindset.
- 24:16Speaker 4: I love Freddie's mindset on that. Just because, you know,
- 24:19Speaker 4: I know you guys have heard him say it, but
- 24:20Speaker 4: this game is so hard. And, you know, Freddie's always
- 24:22Speaker 4: going to congratulate you when you do something good in
- 24:24Speaker 4: this game.
- 24:24Speaker 3: And, you know, just one of the true good guys.
- 24:26Speaker 3: in the sport for sure.
- 24:28Speaker 1: True.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Roger McDowell used to wear him out about, gosh, Roger McDowell,
- 24:31Speaker 2: our pitching coach in Atlanta, used to just get so mad. He,
- 24:33Speaker 2: the guy get a winning hit, like in the ninth
- 24:35Speaker 2: inning and Freddie B over there, man, let's go to this.
- 24:37Speaker 2: I'm going to get you a drink, man. I'm going
- 24:39Speaker 2: to give you the Gatorade bath. And Roger is old
- 24:41Speaker 2: school as they come, but be so angry. And by
- 24:43Speaker 2: the way, the reason y'all can't hear the pitch count,
- 24:45Speaker 2: the pitch calm in LA, because those damn speakers are
- 24:49Speaker 2: so loud in center field, it drowns out.
- 24:51Speaker 1: You could have whatever, you could have a rock concert.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Going on at home plate and you barely be able
- 24:55Speaker 2: to hear it because those damn, speakers blasting so max
- 24:58Speaker 2: thank you so much.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Man good luck man that's the best it's one of
- 25:00Speaker 4: the best parts about dodger stadiums we got that sound
- 25:02Speaker 4: system out there you know it's a it's a 200
- 25:04Speaker 4: million dollar sound system basically and uh you know everyone
- 25:08Speaker 4: everyone loves it you come in there the ground is
- 25:10Speaker 4: shaking it's it's just uh you know you got the
- 25:12Speaker 4: bass going on and uh you know you really had
- 25:15Speaker 4: a lot of guys really take that in consideration when
- 25:17Speaker 4: they're choosing walk-up songs i'll say that oh.
- 25:20Speaker 2: I need bass like you gotta go like to like
- 25:21Speaker 2: magic mike back in the day dj magic mike and
- 25:24Speaker 2: just have pure bass like where he used to shake
- 25:26Speaker 2: your car. You shake the, you can buy, get on
- 25:28Speaker 2: the Richter's tail at Dodger stadium. If you have enough
- 25:30Speaker 2: base in your zone, that'd be, that'd be pretty sweet.
- 25:33Speaker 2: By the way, enjoy the haunted hotel in Milwaukee.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Just going to cuddle with some ghosts. It's not a
- 25:40Speaker 3: big deal.
- 25:41Speaker 4: If my TV turns on at night, I know he's
- 25:42Speaker 4: a friendly one. He just wants to watch a little
- 25:44Speaker 4: sports center.
- 25:44Speaker 3: It's all right.
- 25:45Speaker 1: That's right. And by the way, if you go to carnivore,
- 25:47Speaker 1: ask for my knife. Okay, please. That's all. That's all
- 25:50Speaker 1: I asked for.
- 25:51Speaker 3: You have a knife.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Why wouldn't I? Why wouldn't I have a knife?
- 25:55Speaker 5: Max, you can have a knife there, too. You can
- 25:58Speaker 5: have a knife there.
- 25:58Speaker 3: You're going to have to explain this to me now. Like,
- 26:00Speaker 3: they just have a knife waiting for you?
- 26:02Speaker 2: No, I'm just kidding. They do have knives, though, for
- 26:03Speaker 2: people if you go there enough. But, like, people in
- 26:06Speaker 2: the brewers, people in Milwaukee will say, like, Vassallo, you
- 26:09Speaker 2: don't know who Mike Vassallo is. He's the PR person
- 26:11Speaker 2: for the brewers. We went there this past week, and
- 26:15Speaker 2: he's like, do you use my knife? I'm like, there's
- 26:17Speaker 2: no way you have a knife. He's like, of course
- 26:18Speaker 2: I have a knife. So, anyways, it's different.
- 26:21Speaker 1: It's a different place.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Okay, so you're not important enough to have a knife.
- 26:23Speaker 3: That's good to know.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Yes.
- 26:24Speaker 2: No, I don't go there enough. I didn't spend a
- 26:26Speaker 2: lot of time in Milwaukee. I tried to avoid it
- 26:28Speaker 2: as much as possible. So, you know, it's okay. I'm
- 26:32Speaker 2: over it. Anyways, Max, thank you so much. MLB on
