- 0:15Speaker 2: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

- 0:22Speaker 2: It's Leggy yeah, Jeff Yeah, on Altitude Sports Radio ninety five.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yet is Jeff Legwald time here on a Monday afternoon,
- 0:34Speaker 2: Jeff Legwald, brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 0:37Speaker 2: Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight. You start with a
- 0:40Speaker 2: job and you end with a career. There is much
- 0:44Speaker 2: to cover with Jeff Legwald here today. We've got conference
- 0:48Speaker 2: championship games set, We've got a coaching carrots Hill continuing
- 0:52Speaker 2: to spin, and oh, by the way, we got a
- 0:54Speaker 2: national title game tonight. So much to dive into, but
- 0:57Speaker 2: let's start here, Leggy. Seven consecutive AFC Championship games in
- 1:04Speaker 2: the age of parody and cap restrictions and everything else.
- 1:10Speaker 2: What Reid and Mahomes and Kelsey have done together, and
- 1:14Speaker 2: what this Chiefs group has done in this very time,
- 1:20Speaker 2: how just how impressive is this. How hard is it
- 1:23Speaker 2: to do what they have done.
- 1:26Speaker 5: Well, we've seen how hard it is locally, you know,
- 1:28Speaker 5: one wild card trip and nine seasons.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I mean, it's what they've.
- 1:33Speaker 5: Done is you know, they found, drafted, discovered and cultivated
- 1:39Speaker 5: the alpha.
- 1:40Speaker 3: You know, the league.
- 1:41Speaker 5: Alpha is always where you start to look for the
- 1:45Speaker 5: best teams.
- 1:46Speaker 3: You know, and they have him.
- 1:48Speaker 5: But you know, there's been great, great quarterbacks throughout the
- 1:52Speaker 5: history of the league have not flourished like this because
- 1:55Speaker 5: the structure around him wasn't good enough. But they have
- 1:59Speaker 5: it all. They've got the structure around them, They've handled
- 2:02Speaker 5: the cap issues you have when you have a championship team.
- 2:06Speaker 5: They've drafted well, which I think again the local team
- 2:10Speaker 5: should pay attention to, and they do the basic things right.
- 2:15Speaker 5: I don't think we give them enough credit for doing
- 2:18Speaker 5: the fundamental things right in the big moments. I mean, NAT,
- 2:23Speaker 5: they haven't turned the ball over since week twelve. And
- 2:26Speaker 5: we talk about all these analytics we have, but you know,
- 2:32Speaker 5: the four winners this weekend were plus nine in turnovers total.
- 2:36Speaker 3: And I love numbers as much as anyone.
- 2:40Speaker 5: I love diving into those, but in playoff football, there
- 2:45Speaker 5: may be no bigger number than turnovers and then penalties drops,
- 2:52Speaker 5: you know, all the little mistakes, they don't make them.
- 2:56Speaker 5: And that's what the great great teams do.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Is the league they're gonna deal with or maybe they
- 3:02Speaker 4: just won't, but deal with the perception. I mean, Demiko
- 3:05Speaker 4: Ryans was pretty voice, you know, voiced his frustration with
- 3:09Speaker 4: the late hits on Patrick Mahomes. You know, I guess,
- 3:12Speaker 4: like you think the fans problem. You know, I'm not
- 3:15Speaker 4: necessarily even saying that. Now, the one call where the
- 3:17Speaker 4: two guys came together, that's where you got to get
- 3:19Speaker 4: some replay in there and get a look at it,
- 3:21Speaker 4: because look in live action, I understand what the rest
- 3:23Speaker 4: is called, what they called, but if you get a
- 3:25Speaker 4: look at it and you see the guy ducked out
- 3:26Speaker 4: and two guys hit each other, we got to be
- 3:28Speaker 4: able to fix that.
- 3:29Speaker 1: What I guess I don't understand.
- 3:30Speaker 3: How does the league not have it.
- 3:32Speaker 1: At least a bit.
- 3:33Speaker 4: It just doesn't feel like it's it's consistent when you
- 3:37Speaker 4: watch the other games and guys are getting blown up
- 3:39Speaker 4: and stuff like that. How do they solve that problem
- 3:42Speaker 4: so that maybe more coaches aren't popping off about the
- 3:45Speaker 4: credibility of things.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Coaches have been popping off about that for decades. I mean,
- 3:51Speaker 3: that's that's just the way it is.
- 3:53Speaker 5: If you don't win, you're gonna pop off because you're
- 3:55Speaker 5: gonna think that flag wasn't deserved or that you know,
- 4:01Speaker 5: people were saying the same thing about Brady got preferential treatment,
- 4:04Speaker 5: Manning got preferential treatment.
- 4:06Speaker 3: It's always I mean, I covered teams.
- 4:11Speaker 5: Where the preferential treatment they thought Manning got drove them berserk.
- 4:17Speaker 5: So I mean, this isn't a new problem, and it's
- 4:21Speaker 5: always been that way with with whoever the alpha team
- 4:26Speaker 5: is because people want them out, you know, they want
- 4:30Speaker 5: them gone, and it rankles everyone that they're not. And
- 4:36Speaker 5: you know, I think I think the one where I
- 4:39Speaker 5: would have difficulty if I'm at the league's officiating office,
- 4:44Speaker 5: I'd really wanted to discuss quarterbacks trying to sort of
- 4:49Speaker 5: lure people into the hits, slowing down and letting people
- 4:53Speaker 5: catch up, you know, like receivers do to get a
- 4:56Speaker 5: pass interference. You know, that's the kind of stuff I
- 5:00Speaker 5: don't think, you know, should be allowed to flourish. And
- 5:05Speaker 5: you know, they they let a couple they didn't throw
- 5:09Speaker 5: the flag in that game. A couple times and I
- 5:12Speaker 5: thought that was a good thing, but that is something
- 5:15Speaker 5: quarterbacks do. But I don't think there's any question that
- 5:20Speaker 5: quarterbacks who run are never given the same love by
- 5:25Speaker 5: the officials as the pocket guys do. And that's always
- 5:29Speaker 5: been my beef with it. But this isn't a new argument.
- 5:32Speaker 5: We can't pretend this started with the Chiefs, and I
- 5:36Speaker 5: think it's I think it's a little shallow to say
- 5:39Speaker 5: they win because of it, but that's again I've always
- 5:44Speaker 5: fought the unless the unless the call or non call
- 5:47Speaker 5: is made, like in the last three snaps of a
- 5:51Speaker 5: one score game. I have real difficulties saying people don't
- 5:56Speaker 5: have enough snaps to fix their beasts with officiating in the.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Game along those lines, By the way, speaking of officiating,
- 6:03Speaker 2: the Keon Coleman play that happened, are wide receivers today,
- 6:10Speaker 2: are they coached? I don't want to say to commit
- 6:14Speaker 2: offensive pass interference, but basically, if you do, you then
- 6:19Speaker 2: get to put the onus on the official to decide.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Who to then throw the flag on.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And really, like, why not coach your receivers to just
- 6:29Speaker 2: be as overly aggressive, as physical, as borderline as possible
- 6:33Speaker 2: because the flag's probably gonna go your way anyway.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Well, I mean, defensive coaches do the same thing.
- 6:39Speaker 5: They coach with the idea they're not going to flag
- 6:41Speaker 5: them all, and there's no greater example in the history.
- 6:46Speaker 5: In fact, they change the rule when the Patriots beat
- 6:51Speaker 5: the Greatest Show on Turf in the Super Bowl. There
- 6:54Speaker 5: may have been more pass interference non calls in that
- 6:58Speaker 5: game than an any game I've ever covered seen ben
- 7:02Speaker 5: to ever at any level. Uh So, yeah, I mean
- 7:06Speaker 5: that's that's another thing. I'm not sure you can totally
- 7:09Speaker 5: fix that as long as you're gonna have you know,
- 7:13Speaker 5: humans officiating the game. But yeah, it's coached both ways.
- 7:18Speaker 5: Uh you know, it's like the flop and soccer. You
- 7:21Speaker 5: know you're not gonna get them all, but you may
- 7:23Speaker 5: get one that counts at some point. And that's that
- 7:26Speaker 5: is coached into the game these days. And unless you
- 7:29Speaker 5: get review every play, I don't know how you can
- 7:32Speaker 5: get all of the repairs people want. And then they
- 7:37Speaker 5: would be mad because the game would take about six hours.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Well part of me just just do the thing where
- 7:42Speaker 4: the guy on the video board says, hey, that's what
- 7:44Speaker 4: it was, let's let it go. But I'm with you
- 7:46Speaker 4: there is Saquon Barkley the greatest free agents in s
- 7:49Speaker 4: Peyton maning I asked Nate this last week. I'm and
- 7:53Speaker 4: you're laughing, but I'll tell you what, Man, the Eagles
- 7:55Speaker 4: are nowhere without that guy. They're they're the scene soap
- 7:58Speaker 4: opera mess from a year ago, that that guy.
- 8:01Speaker 5: If you're the Giants, I mean, you're crying at night.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Look at the choices you made. You know, we're gonna
- 8:06Speaker 5: keep the quarterback and get rid of Saquan and you know,
- 8:09Speaker 5: it's like the Cowboys. They're gonna watch Kellen Moore and
- 8:13Speaker 5: and Dan Quinn.
- 8:16Speaker 3: You know, just think about that.
- 8:18Speaker 5: You're right, you know, coaching in the in the you know,
- 8:22Speaker 5: the conference championship game.
- 8:23Speaker 3: So I mean it's it's Barkley is one of the greatest.
- 8:27Speaker 5: And I and I you know, personally, on a football level,
- 8:31Speaker 5: I love that people have seen, you know, this notion
- 8:36Speaker 5: you're just gonna throw all the time and running doesn't
- 8:39Speaker 5: matter anymore. ILike that the good teams, the good offenses
- 8:45Speaker 5: have shown that not to be the case. Because I'm
- 8:49Speaker 5: I'm a little weary of we continually celebrate the wide
- 8:52Speaker 5: open throw it every down and then those teams don't win,
- 8:56Speaker 5: and we never bring it up again. We just wait
- 8:58Speaker 5: for our next fantasy scene and you know, tally up
- 9:02Speaker 5: the touchdowns because the real world playoffs continue after the
- 9:07Speaker 5: fantasy playoffs are done.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I love fantasy football. That's Jeff Legball and everybody.
- 9:13Speaker 3: It's too because a lot more people. But you know
- 9:21Speaker 3: what I'm saying.
- 9:22Speaker 1: You know, I like that.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I like that physicality.
- 9:24Speaker 5: I guess it has been important the last couple of years,
- 9:28Speaker 5: and it was really important this year, and it was
- 9:31Speaker 5: really important this weekend.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Jeff on the Ramos Law hotline car accident. You need
- 9:35Speaker 2: Ramo's Law, medical doctor, and attorney. You visit ramos Law
- 9:38Speaker 2: dot com. I mean, along those lines, and let's stay
- 9:40Speaker 2: on the physicality there for a moment. Is the version
- 9:44Speaker 2: of Josh Allen that plays pretty mistake free football, basically
- 9:49Speaker 2: completely mistake free football? Is that guy unstoppable? Can even
- 9:54Speaker 2: Kansas City get that guy if he doesn't make any
- 9:56Speaker 2: mistakes next week?
- 9:59Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 9:59Speaker 5: I mean you're left with tough choices if you choose
- 10:02Speaker 5: to hem him in. He's far more advanced in his
- 10:08Speaker 5: game and he can take you apart on the outside
- 10:11Speaker 5: when you do that. And if you don't hem him in.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Then he just does whatever he wants and he is
- 10:21Speaker 5: a lot to deal with. And again, I think the
- 10:23Speaker 5: teams that have done the best against him. You know,
- 10:28Speaker 5: it's an old way of thinking, but I think limiting
- 10:31Speaker 5: possessions unless you just think you're going to score every
- 10:35Speaker 5: time against the Buffalo defense, I think limiting possessions is
- 10:39Speaker 5: a pretty quality way to steer clear. But you know,
- 10:45Speaker 5: it's hard to rush him aggressively because even if you
- 10:49Speaker 5: get there, you know, if you blitz a corner, say,
- 10:53Speaker 5: which is often a great way to get to a quarterback,
- 10:57Speaker 5: that guy doesn't get him on the ground. If you
- 10:59Speaker 5: blitch a safe, that guy may not get him on
- 11:01Speaker 5: the ground. If you blitzed a linebacker, that guy may
- 11:04Speaker 5: not get him on the ground even if they get there.
- 11:07Speaker 5: So he's he's a dynamic, physical, power arm guy who
- 11:13Speaker 5: now knows how to play the game.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Who is the next coach hired with Ben Johnson off
- 11:19Speaker 4: the board to Chicago?
- 11:21Speaker 5: How about the Bears hired Ben Johnson without a face
- 11:24Speaker 5: to face meeting. I mean that is, we have seen
- 11:27Speaker 5: the ultimate progress in the Zoom world. In all of this,
- 11:32Speaker 5: I mean, I couldn't have imagined a team not hiring
- 11:36Speaker 5: a coach without a face to face meeting at any
- 11:39Speaker 5: point in the past, but that's what happened here. I
- 11:43Speaker 5: think a lot of people in the league are saying,
- 11:46Speaker 5: you know, sort of any decision on Aaron Glenn will
- 11:49Speaker 5: start the wheels moving on some of these other jobs
- 11:53Speaker 5: that when when he decides or he is hired, then
- 11:56Speaker 5: that'll be the bigger domino that falls. And you know,
- 12:00Speaker 5: the Cowboys are doing their own thing. Apparently they're they're
- 12:03Speaker 5: like interviewing all the candidates that haven't really been in
- 12:08Speaker 5: the a lot of other team's mind and that's not
- 12:12Speaker 5: right or wrong, but it just shows you that they
- 12:15Speaker 5: really do their own thing down there.
- 12:17Speaker 2: I think Aaron Glenn is very much ready. That said
- 12:21Speaker 2: his game plan uh the other night against Jayden Daniels.
- 12:26Speaker 2: They have lived by that where we are gonna we
- 12:29Speaker 2: are gonna be blitz heavy, We're gonna play man, We're
- 12:31Speaker 2: gonna play aggressive. It doesn't matter how many dbs we lose,
- 12:35Speaker 2: we are gonna continue to play that way.
- 12:37Speaker 1: And instead of.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Ever adjusting and sitting back soft, Tom Brady was exhorting
- 12:42Speaker 2: them to please do that on the telecast, they stayed
- 12:45Speaker 2: aggressive the whole way and Jaydeon Daniels just just picked
- 12:48Speaker 2: them apart. Yes, they turned the ball over, but how
- 12:51Speaker 2: much did that defensive game plan really damage them against
- 12:54Speaker 2: Cliff Kingsbury and jayde Daniels the other night.
- 12:58Speaker 5: I certainly don't want to swim up stream against a
- 13:01Speaker 5: guy who won seven Super Bowls, but I'm not sure
- 13:05Speaker 5: they had any personnel left to do anything with any
- 13:08Speaker 5: great regularity. And I guess in that situation, if I'm
- 13:13Speaker 5: the coordinator, I'm aggressive in the rush.
- 13:17Speaker 3: And probably play some zone behind it.
- 13:19Speaker 5: But against a quick trigger quarterback who knows what he's doing,
- 13:24Speaker 5: that's a recipe for an eighty percent completion day. So
- 13:29Speaker 5: I'm not sure Aaron Glad had a right answer after
- 13:32Speaker 5: they lose the corner early in the game. Robertson have
- 13:35Speaker 5: been such a key part of what they've done the
- 13:39Speaker 5: last few weeks, and when he left the game, I'm
- 13:43Speaker 5: not sure Aaron Gladd had many right answers.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Frankly, do you.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Think any of Tom Brady's in game commentary swung Ben
- 13:50Speaker 4: Johnson to the Bears since all a few people in
- 13:53Speaker 4: Vegas could talk about is how he was going to
- 13:55Speaker 4: go there?
- 13:56Speaker 5: Well, you know, Dan just whether it's gossip or not,
- 14:01Speaker 5: but I was told by a friend of mine in
- 14:03Speaker 5: the league who said that the general understanding is that
- 14:08Speaker 5: Ben Johnson spent tons of time with Tom Brady on
- 14:12Speaker 5: these remote meetings just talking about what the offense would
- 14:15Speaker 5: look like or what they both like in an offense.
- 14:18Speaker 5: And I think Ben Johnson and his agent and his
- 14:23Speaker 5: family or whoever else is around him just basically decided
- 14:27Speaker 5: Caleb Williams is a better quarterback than anybody the Raiders
- 14:30Speaker 5: are going to have. I think, you know, maybe the
- 14:33Speaker 5: decisions more technical than that, but I don't think it.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Was thirteen MILLI year helps is found. Thirteen millill gets you.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Off the couch.
- 14:41Speaker 4: I think, yeah, no, it's a pretty good start paycheck,
- 14:45Speaker 4: isn't it.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Pretty tasty promotion? But you know, and you know.
- 14:50Speaker 5: There's a lot of offensive talent in the skill positions
- 14:53Speaker 5: with the Bears. You know, offensive line needs a ton
- 14:55Speaker 5: of work. But you know, first time head coaches a
- 14:59Speaker 5: play that's you better think that through on how all
- 15:03Speaker 5: that's gonna look. And your choice is defensive coordinator is
- 15:08Speaker 5: immensely important, and you should probably have an assistant head
- 15:12Speaker 5: coach around you who's done it before.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Jef Legwaald of ESPN, obviously draft expert as well. LEGGI,
- 15:19Speaker 2: if Jeremiah Smith was not a freshman, but was indeed
- 15:23Speaker 2: entering this NFL draft, where do you think he would
- 15:27Speaker 2: be selected.
- 15:29Speaker 5: He'd be in my top three, in my top one hundred,
- 15:32Speaker 5: I know that. Yeah, I can't say he'd be one
- 15:35Speaker 5: right now. But he's ridiculous that physically technically, I mean,
- 15:40Speaker 5: he's some of these receivers have been in you know,
- 15:43Speaker 5: seven on seven camps, you know, since they were in
- 15:46Speaker 5: elementary school, and the route runnings at another level with
- 15:51Speaker 5: the top guys right now that it was fifteen years
- 15:54Speaker 5: ago when I was evaluating these guys.
- 15:56Speaker 3: But his physicality is.
- 15:59Speaker 5: What deviy he's He's a big, big receiver with small
- 16:04Speaker 5: guy agility and the hands are stupid. I mean it's just,
- 16:09Speaker 5: you know, wherever they put him together, go go get
- 16:12Speaker 5: some more of those.
- 16:13Speaker 3: If you're a if you're offensive play call, tell you what.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Since Nate took us here between Notre Dame and Ohio State,
- 16:20Speaker 4: give us a couple guys that might make real good
- 16:23Speaker 4: additions to the Broncos locker room.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Well, I like both the House State packs and pick
- 16:32Speaker 5: a Notre Dame linebacker, you know, And I think you're
- 16:35Speaker 5: pretty safe at either one of those spots, but that
- 16:38Speaker 5: those are very strengths in those on those rosters.
- 16:42Speaker 3: But that's where I would go with those two teams.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Yeah, well, twenty million dollar roster. It's working out for
- 16:49Speaker 2: Ohio State. Like you, who do you like tonight? The
- 16:51Speaker 2: buck guys of the Irish hard.
- 16:54Speaker 3: To deny the Buckey's talent. I think the Irish.
- 16:57Speaker 5: Need an early turnover. Yeah, you know, because that when
- 17:01Speaker 5: in the games where Ohio State's been wobbly, uh, people
- 17:05Speaker 5: have gotten a Will Howard or at least you know,
- 17:08Speaker 5: made them uncomfortable. So and I you know, Notre Dame's
- 17:12Speaker 5: got al golden calling defensive plays. And that guy's been
- 17:15Speaker 5: around the NFL a long time. He he knows how
- 17:18Speaker 5: to get under a quarterback skin. So I think an
- 17:22Speaker 5: early turnover or too for the Irish is their ticket
- 17:25Speaker 5: to get the win. But if you let Ohio State
- 17:27Speaker 5: get in that we're gonna throw early and run late
- 17:31Speaker 5: type of situation, then you they're putting a they're putting.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Some hurt on you, by the way, Like I guess
- 17:37Speaker 2: we should ask you Obronco question What are you hearing
- 17:41Speaker 2: on the hot special teams coaching carousel right now? Sounds
- 17:45Speaker 2: like Ben Johnson's hot to try to get rizzy. Uh,
- 17:48Speaker 2: they're in Chicago, That's what Chefty is reporting right now.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Could that?
- 17:53Speaker 2: Could that potentially get some friction going? Could the could
- 17:55Speaker 2: the Walmart folks get their hackles up, get into a
- 17:58Speaker 2: bit of a special Teams coach bidding war or.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Make it happen?
- 18:03Speaker 5: You don't see Special Teams coach bidding or very often they.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Start play Dennis Allen they go there too. All Shawn's
- 18:11Speaker 1: friends may be headed north to his old hometown.
- 18:15Speaker 5: But uh, yeah, I know special teams. Uh, I just
- 18:21Speaker 5: don't know that. You know, he's got to have something
- 18:24Speaker 5: in mind.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Uh.
- 18:26Speaker 5: I know they'll give sort of a long look at
- 18:30Speaker 5: moving Chris Banjo up the ladder. Now will that be
- 18:33Speaker 5: one slot to assistant special Teams coach or all the way?
- 18:37Speaker 3: You know, I don't know that, but uh could we.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Or is west Off done done? Could they do the
- 18:46Speaker 4: same thing with west Off and banjo? Have you ever
- 18:48Speaker 4: played a banjo?
- 18:51Speaker 3: No, I've never played a banjo.
- 18:52Speaker 5: But uh, I think west Off was retiring for health
- 18:57Speaker 5: reasons because he had some magnificant health reasons, and I'd
- 19:02Speaker 5: be surprising to me if if that somehow was a
- 19:06Speaker 5: return engagement. But uh, you know that, I think the
- 19:11Speaker 5: Cowboys special teams coach had a lot of interest around
- 19:14Speaker 5: the league.
- 19:14Speaker 3: But he's he's already picked a spot, so uh what's
