Ep. 162. Who is Elixir in Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:18
Hi guys, it's Megamo Vigilante Vibes and I'm here with another
• 0:21
character breakdown and I'm continuing my Marvel coverage
• 0:24
and talking about all the underrated mutants in the Marvel
• 0:28
Universe. So for today's episode since I
• 0:31
was asked by multiple people and one day to make a breakdown of
• 0:36
him, I am here to talk about our boy Elixir.
• 0:39
So Elixir first appeared in New Mutants volume to #5 in November
• 0:44
of 2003. After Joshua Foley's mutant
• 0:46
powers showed up, he went to Xavier's Institute to learn how
• 0:50
to use them. He eventually joined the New
• 0:52
X-Men and later the X Force team, becoming Elixir.
• 0:56
He's an Omega level mutant who can either heal or hurt people.
• 1:00
He's always struggling with the two sides of the powers, the
• 1:03
ability to give life or take it away.
• 1:06
So that's a very short version of who Elixir is, but if you
• 1:11
hang tight, I can give you the full version, The full history
• 1:14
of Joshua Foley. Born in Flushing, Queens, NY to
• 1:19
parents Howard and Grace Foley, Joshua Josh Foley was the
• 1:23
family's Golden Boy. He had a great childhood growing
• 1:27
up well adjusted and well liked with a loving family.
• 1:30
But he didn't know was that he was a mutant.
• 1:34
He had the X gene and that was about to change everything.
• 1:39
His friend Duncan convinced him to join the anti mutant group
• 1:41
the Reavers, led by Donald Pierce.
• 1:44
During a fight with the New Mutants, a group of young heroes
• 1:47
mentored by the X-Men, Duncan got hurt.
• 1:51
That's when Josh's powers kicked in and he accidentally healed
• 1:54
him, which is like be grateful. Later, when Pierce injured a
• 2:00
mutant named Lori Collins, also known as Wallflower, Josh put
• 2:04
his fears aside and healed her too.
• 2:06
This led to one of the original New Mutants, Danny Moon Star,
• 2:10
inviting him to join Xavier's Institute.
• 2:13
He said no at first. He still had his he still had
• 2:19
his pretty toxic thoughts about mutants even though he was a
• 2:22
mutant. But after his family and friends
• 2:25
turned on him for being a mutant, he reluctantly agreed to
• 2:28
go because it's like what else are you going to do?
• 2:31
As the mutant elixir, Josh can manipulate organic matter like
• 2:35
flesh, blood, bone just by touching someone and
• 2:38
concentrating. His skin has a shiny flexible
• 2:41
gold with a dark mercury like substance flowing over it.
• 2:45
This power, known as biokinesis, allows him to heal almost
• 2:50
anything from small wounds to major injuries, even regrowing
• 2:53
tissues that have been completely destroyed.
• 2:56
The only downside is that healing massive injuries can
• 3:00
cause them to pass out. Which is it?
• 3:04
Like that big of a downside? Like it could be worse.
• 3:08
He's also got a powerful offensive side to his abilities.
• 3:10
By reversing his energy, he can cause all kinds of damage, from
• 3:14
cellular breakdowns to a full on heart attack.
• 3:17
On top of all that, he's got the brains to match his powers.
• 3:20
Despite only having a high school education, he's basically
• 3:23
a genius when it comes to genetics and biology, with the
• 3:26
knowledge of someone who has a PhD in biochemistry.
• 3:29
When he first got to Xavier's Institute, he had a tough time
• 3:33
fitting in with the Moody's as he so lovingly called them, and
• 3:38
he struggled with his roommate David Allen, who's actually
• 3:41
prodigy, but they eventually became good friends.
• 3:45
At first his parents named the school his legal guardian, but
• 3:48
later his faculty advisor Danny Moon Star took over and that
• 3:52
gives you a pretty good idea of how hard his parents wanted to
• 3:57
not be involved with their son that they handed over the rights
• 4:00
to his life to a school. After taking the name Elixir, he
• 4:06
joined the New Mutants training Squad, the New X-Men, and later
• 4:09
the X Force. After a villain named Reverend
• 4:12
William Stryker attacked the Institute, Josh killed him and
• 4:16
it changed him, literally and figuratively.
• 4:18
From then on, whenever he faced powerful enemies like Belasco,
• 4:22
Wither, and Gauntlet, his black form would appear, either
• 4:26
completely covering him or crawling all over his body like
• 4:28
spilled ink. Around the time Danny Moon Star
• 4:31
became his legal guardian, he fell for Rain Sinclair, also
• 4:36
known as Wolfsbane. I don't know if it's Rain or
• 4:39
Rhyne. It's RAHNE and I've never heard
• 4:43
anyone say it out loud. It's only Wolfsbane.
• 4:45
So from here on out she will only be referred to as
• 4:47
Wolfsbane, who had just come back to the Institute after
• 4:52
losing her powers. During an intense kiss, Josh
• 4:55
accidentally healed Wolfsbane, giving her powers back.
• 4:59
This made her lose control and attack him close to death.
• 5:03
Josh managed to heal himself, which unexpectedly turned his
• 5:06
skin gold. Now calling himself a Lick Sir,
• 5:09
he joined the New Mutants. He and Wolfsbane started a
• 5:11
secret romance, but she broke it off after becoming a teacher.
• 5:16
  Then Josh started dating Wallflower.
• 5:18
But when a jealous Wither found out about Josh and Wolfsbane and
• 5:22
exposed them, Wallflower quickly dumped him.
• 5:26
After M Day, when most mutants lose their powers, Emma Frost
• 5:30
chose Elixir as one of the key students for the New X-Men.
• 5:33
He grew closer to Wallflower again after Whither hurt her and
• 5:37
Josh tried to heal her, but he couldn't.
• 5:40
When William Stryker blew up a bus full of depowered students,
• 5:44
Elixir couldn't save his friend DJ, and a part of Josh's soul
• 5:47
went dark. When Stryker's Purifiers killed
• 5:51
Wallflower right in front of him, something snapped.
• 5:55
Elixir unleashed his power, causing Striker cells to
• 5:58
deteriorate until he died. This turned Elixir's body an
• 6:03
Onyx color. After healing a nearly dead
• 6:06
X-23, his skin turned back to gold, but a black inkblot
• 6:11
  remained, moving across his body.
• 6:13
Which looks cool for us. I cannot imagine how it is to
• 6:17
have that. From then on, Josh was
• 6:20
determined to learn everything he could about the human body.
• 6:23
He had the Stafford Cuckoos telepathically download all of
• 6:27
Beats medical knowledge into his brain, which unlocked his
• 6:29
power's full potential. Later, he joined the X force to
• 6:33
fight Bastian and his followers. He healed a drug overdose to
• 6:37
Wolfsbane, but she attacked him an Angel tearing off his wings.
• 6:41
When Elixir tried to heal Angel, it reactivated his dormant DNA,
• 6:46
giving him his powerful Archangel wings.
• 6:49
Afraid of this new knowledge and his own capacity kill, Elixir
• 6:53
asked X-23 to help him wipe his memories.
• 6:56
But before they could, a news report about the thought to be
• 6:59
dead great and Creed stopped them.
• 7:02
He then joined the team to go after the Vanisher, a thief who
• 7:05
stole a very dangerous virus. Reluctantly, Elixir gave him a
• 7:09
brain tumor to make him cooperate and later helped heal
• 7:13
X-23 after she was infected by said virus.
• 7:17
Cyclops then sent the team to the future to bring back the
• 7:20
first mutant child born since M Day.
• 7:24
But while there, Elixir went into hysterics after failing to
• 7:27
save his friends. He then had a standoff with
• 7:30
Strife, giving him cancer. Strife forced him to heal him,
• 7:34
and Elixir then used his powers to save his friends, Serge and
• 7:37
Helium. All that effort put him into a
• 7:40
coma. He was later revived by the
• 7:44
Goddess of Death, Hella, to help save Wolfsbane's child.
• 7:48
He transferred some of the baby's powers to fortify
• 7:51
Wolfsbane's body so she could carry to full term.
• 7:54
Elixir, then rejoined X Force and fought Celine in her inner
• 7:57
circle. He had a final showdown with
• 8:00
Wither over what happened with Laurie, which ended with Elixir
• 8:03
turning into his Onyx form and Wither turning to dust.
• 8:08
He left X Force after that and stayed in Genosha, but
• 8:11
discovered his healing powers were gone.
• 8:14
After Wolverine's death, Elixir was captured alongside several
• 8:18
other mutants. He tried to kill the villain
• 8:20
Siphon, but his powers failed him.
• 8:23
He then joined a group of mutants on the ruins of Utopia
• 8:26
and was later invited to the new Charles Xavier school.
• 8:31
Still struggling with who he was, he joined a church to find
• 8:34
himself, but a villain named Gauntlet and his Dark Riders
• 8:38
started hunting down healers. Dark Riders found Elixir, killed
• 8:43
his friends, and then shot him. He resurrected himself and
• 8:47
tortured the Dark Riders by killing them and bringing them
• 8:50
back to life. Magneto's X-Men rushed him to a
• 8:53
Medical Center where mutants were suffering from a disease,
• 8:56
but Elixir's healing powers ravaged everyone, including
• 8:59
himself. The X-Men stopped him, and he
• 9:03
went to a retreat to learn how to control his powers.
• 9:06
He later joined Magneto against Bastian and his crew, who were
• 9:10
spreading a virus that caused uncontrolled growth in mutants.
• 9:14
Elixir was able to reverse the effects, then joined Magneto's
• 9:18
new Brotherhood of Mutants. Elixir then joined Emma Frost's
• 9:23
new Hellfire Club as mutants faced a vaccine that would erase
• 9:27
the mutant gene from future generations.
• 9:29
Beast shot his teammate Vanisher with a Cure serum.
• 9:33
Elixir tried to heal him but failed.
• 9:36
When Professor X and his allies created the mutant nation of
• 9:39
Krakoa, Elixir joined a group called The Five who could
• 9:43
combine their powers and resurrect deceased mutants.
• 9:46
They'd create new bodies and restore their memories, making
• 9:49
Elixir and the rest of the 5A Revered and sacred group.
• 9:53
So that is elixir. Joshua Foley.
• 9:57
He, his life is something he started off so happy and loved
• 10:04
and cared for by his family just for everything to go to trash.
• 10:11
And he but you know what? That's what you get for being so
• 10:16
anti mutant though. But I guess he does, except that
• 10:19
he's a mutant and he does find a love for his friends and the
• 10:22
people in his life. But his life is like full of
• 10:26
failure after failure. And it's like, I'm glad he found
• 10:30
his place with the five. And I would really, really like
• 10:33
if Marvel made a comic surrounded by the five.
• 10:37
Or like I understand Krakoa era is over, Krakoa is done, but I
• 10:43
want more. So anyways, Speaking of comics,
• 10:49
I have some comics you can check out to get to know Elixir even
• 10:52
better. These are just the comics I
• 10:54
read. If you have any other ideas or
• 10:58
any other comic recommendations just let me know in the comments
• 11:01
because I don't know all of Marvel Comics.
• 11:03
I haven't read all of Marvel Comics and I don't plan to.
• 11:08
So yeah, starting off New Mutants Volume 2 from 2003 New
• 11:15
X-Men, Academy, New X-Men from 2004 X Force Volume 3 up to like
• 11:23
issue 25 I think, and Academy X So that is my breakdown of
• 11:30
Elixir. I hope you guys enjoyed it.
• 11:31
He is a great character, as is most of these characters that
• 11:35
  I'm breaking down because they're so they're just, they're
• 11:38
just underrated, underrated mutants with amazing powers and
• 11:41
amazing stories. So make sure you are following
• 11:44
along by liking and subscribing so you don't miss any more of
• 11:46
these breakdowns or any of the other things.
• 11:49
I like to post because I post a lot, perhaps too much.
• 11:54
Someday I'll learn. Well, with that being said, have
• 11:57
  a marvelous day.
