- 0:05Speaker 1: in lineups instantly if they use code HMA. Tom Hannafin
- 0:08Speaker 1: of The Power 2 on with us today to talk
- 0:10Speaker 1: a little Ohio State football. Ohio State and Maryland this week.
- 0:15Speaker 1: And Tom, not a matchup that maybe screams off the page,
- 0:18Speaker 1: but Maryland gave Nebraska all they wanted for a half.
- 0:22Speaker 1: They played Virginia Tech fairly well this year. I know
- 0:25Speaker 1: the vibes are not super high in Loxley land right now,
- 0:28Speaker 1: but a team that's been at least capable of competing
- 0:31Speaker 1: at times. Now, UCLA absolutely drug them through the mud.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And so that was, you know, kind of the, the
- 0:37Speaker 1: one that makes you think this one could get ugly.
- 0:39Speaker 1: But if you're Ohio state, is there any danger with
- 0:43Speaker 1: a Maryland game knowing that that trip to Bloomington is
- 0:46Speaker 1: just a week away?
- 0:47Speaker 2: Like, I know we're going to pick Ohio state here.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I know we think that that's certainly what's going to happen,
- 0:51Speaker 1: but is there any kind of worry about that from
- 0:54Speaker 1: their perspective?
- 0:55Speaker 3: Yeah, you always worry about the look-ahead game. I think
- 0:58Speaker 3: that's fair for any program. I'm kind of looking at
- 1:01Speaker 3: Ohio State in the same ballpark as I am Notre Dame,
- 1:04Speaker 3: considering what Notre Dame did to UNC this past weekend,
- 1:07Speaker 3: is that it's kind of maintenance in that we know
- 1:10Speaker 3: what Ohio State is good at, and we know what
- 1:12Speaker 3: Maryland is not great at. So this is leaning in
- 1:15Speaker 3: the favor of the Buckeyes. That's completely understandable. But if
- 1:18Speaker 3: you're Ohio State, you're trying to work on the little things.
- 1:20Speaker 3: You're trying to build off of what you did at
- 1:23Speaker 3: Kinnick against the Iowa Hawkeyes this past weekend. I think,
- 1:26Speaker 3: if anything, you're going to look at the defense from
- 1:28Speaker 3: Ryan Day, and I think Ryan Day and Matt Patricia
- 1:31Speaker 3: are probably going to huddle up and be a little
- 1:33Speaker 3: frustrated by what they allowed get on the board in
- 1:35Speaker 3: the fourth quarter against Iowa when a backup quarterback came in,
- 1:38Speaker 3: marched him down the field to a touchdown. That's going
- 1:40Speaker 3: to be the ultra-perfectionist mentality, I think, from Ryan Day.
- 1:44Speaker 3: And this coaching staff, when you approach this Maryland game, is, hey,
- 1:48Speaker 3: let's shore things up. Let's make sure we're cleaner and
- 1:50Speaker 3: we're not just allowing these lapses. While Ohio State finished
- 1:54Speaker 3: and got the win against Iowa, you want to have
- 1:57Speaker 3: no doubt. They use the terminology that Marcus Freeman has
- 2:00Speaker 3: used with his team this year. You want to leave
- 2:02Speaker 3: no doubt. So I think you're going to see Ohio
- 2:04Speaker 3: State come out and do what they do offensively. They're
- 2:06Speaker 3: going to feed number four, Julian Sand. If you can't
- 2:08Speaker 3: get pressure on him, he will be able to pick
- 2:10Speaker 3: you apart. I want to see the continuation of the
- 2:13Speaker 3: success they had in the running game against Iowa. It
- 2:16Speaker 3: was something you and I talked about with Colt Thompson
- 2:18Speaker 3: on the Power 2 live on College Football Addiction is
- 2:20Speaker 3: that the running game looked better. You had two tailbacks,
- 2:23Speaker 3: Jacoby and Bo Jackson, both with about 70 yards rushing.
- 2:28Speaker 3: And they were running the ball to the tune of
- 2:30Speaker 3: about five yards per carry. It's a nice clip. You
- 2:32Speaker 3: feel really good about that. You did that against an
- 2:34Speaker 3: Iowa team that doesn't have a tremendous front four. Maryland's
- 2:37Speaker 3: going to be a similar circumstance. But to your point,
- 2:40Speaker 3: when you run into Indiana, that will be a challenge
- 2:43Speaker 3: in terms of the front four and the defense overall
- 2:45Speaker 3: from the Hoosiers. So for Ohio State, I look at
- 2:48Speaker 3: this as a maintenance game. This is making sure you
- 2:50Speaker 3: correct the things you have to correct. tighten up a
- 2:52Speaker 3: little bit on defense, make sure the running game is
- 2:55Speaker 3: going to be something that's sustainable for them to rely
- 2:57Speaker 3: on for the rest of the season.
- 2:59Speaker 1: When you look at this Ohio State team and you
- 3:05Speaker 1: also look within the context of college football right now,
- 3:09Speaker 1: there are a few teams that I'd say look really
- 3:11Speaker 1: complete right now.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Georgia's up there.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I think Bama is up there, though they've had some
- 3:16Speaker 1: shaky halves recently. Um, Texas is probably up there close,
- 3:21Speaker 1: but their offense is, has struggled.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Miami's probably up there. Uh, Ohio state's absolutely up there.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And I know that was just like a fourth quarter
- 3:27Speaker 1: from hell against Texas on the road. And I think
- 3:31Speaker 1: a lot of people, I don't want to say forget
- 3:32Speaker 1: about that, but a lot of people kind of brush
- 3:34Speaker 1: that off. Cause when you have one really, really bad
- 3:36Speaker 1: quarter out of what do they play now? Five, you know, 20,
- 3:38Speaker 1: you know, like we'll forgive you a little bit. Texas
- 3:41Speaker 1: does still have athletes at this point. And they're the
- 3:44Speaker 1: number one team in the country, at least based on
- 3:45Speaker 1: the polls. So when I look at Ohio State, I
- 3:49Speaker 1: do wonder, is there a team in this conference that
- 3:54Speaker 1: can slow them down, can stop them? Because right now
- 3:56Speaker 1: it feels like it's Indiana or bust. Just before we
- 3:59Speaker 1: go on, I will give some love to our new
- 4:02Speaker 1: top 25 poll.
- 4:03Speaker 2: A lot of you are like me and you hate
- 4:05Speaker 2: the AP poll.
- 4:06Speaker 1: So I created a better one that you can log
- 4:09Speaker 1: in right now and for free. go create your own
- 4:13Speaker 1: top 25 poll. I'm setting up reminders. I'm working on
- 4:17Speaker 1: aggregating national college football analysts that we all know and
- 4:20Speaker 1: love and respect, or maybe even hate just to get
- 4:22Speaker 1: theirs in there as well. It's super slick. The user
- 4:26Speaker 1: interface is really, really easy to use. You log in
- 4:29Speaker 1: one time with your Google account and you are all set.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I'm not going to spam your email. I'm not trying
- 4:34Speaker 1: to sell you anything. There's no ads on here. If
- 4:37Speaker 1: somebody would like to put an ad on there, please
- 4:38Speaker 1: let me know. But it's just a place where we
- 4:40Speaker 1: can go collectively as fans vote on the poll, the
- 4:45Speaker 1: top 25 in college football, we're going to work on
- 4:47Speaker 1: a college ball playoff one.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Once we get closer to November, but go check this out.
- 4:51Speaker 1: It's CFA top 25.com link is in the description.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I'll pin the comment. Go check it out right now.
- 4:59Speaker 3: I feel like Indiana.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I agree with that. I feel like Oregon is still
- 5:04Speaker 3: figuring things out defensively. They're giving up points. You know,
- 5:07Speaker 3: the USC game was evidence that, you know, they're, they're
- 5:10Speaker 3: still going to give up points. Ohio State, I feel like,
- 5:12Speaker 3: would be able to take advantage of them, but I
- 5:14Speaker 3: believe Dan Lanning's crew is steadily getting things together. Then
- 5:19Speaker 3: I do look at Michigan, and I know people are
- 5:21Speaker 3: knocking Michigan right now, and they just lost to Minnesota
- 5:23Speaker 3: on the road, but the defense isn't the problem for
- 5:26Speaker 3: the Michigan Wolverines. It's the offense. The Michigan defense held
- 5:30Speaker 3: up as long as they could, and Minnesota eventually found
- 5:32Speaker 3: answers at home. I think that Michigan-Ohio State game, shocker
- 5:36Speaker 3: that the game is going to be competitive, but Michigan
- 5:39Speaker 3: should make that competitive. At least for a little while,
- 5:42Speaker 3: they should be able to challenge what Ohio State is
- 5:44Speaker 3: able to do offensively. Now, is it enough that they
- 5:47Speaker 3: drag Ohio State down into the muck and make it
- 5:49Speaker 3: a real low-scoring fistfight? I don't know. But I think
- 5:52Speaker 3: Michigan and Indiana defensively are the only two teams in
- 5:56Speaker 3: their regular season slate that should give them trouble. I
- 6:00Speaker 3: think Oregon will be formidable, but I would put Indiana
- 6:04Speaker 3: and Michigan one and two.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Is there anything Maryland can do outside of like prey
- 6:11Speaker 1: to like, I mean, realistically, like they were in that
- 6:13Speaker 1: Nebraska and I think Nebraska and Ohio state are very
- 6:15Speaker 1: different teams.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I know that, you know, they're not the same caliber.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Of opponent by any means, but they were in that
- 6:23Speaker 1: Nebraska game for a half. In fact, they were leading.
- 6:26Speaker 1: They were in that Virginia tech game for a while.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Is there anything they can do to just kind of
- 6:30Speaker 1: stick around and make this a second half game? Or
- 6:33Speaker 1: is it kind of, and if Ohio state goes out
- 6:35Speaker 1: there and plays their a game there, there's just, it's
- 6:38Speaker 1: what score do they want it to be?
- 6:40Speaker 3: Yeah, the challenge for Maryland is keeping the score somewhat
- 6:44Speaker 3: close late in the game. Right now, the spread is
- 6:47Speaker 3: 34 and a half in favor of Ohio State with
- 6:50Speaker 3: an over under 56 and a half. So there's a
- 6:52Speaker 3: potential that Ohio State could hit that over almost by
- 6:55Speaker 3: themselves with a little bit of help from Maryland in
- 6:57Speaker 3: this one. The path to victory, and we've talked about
- 7:00Speaker 3: it before on the show, if you're Maryland, you need
- 7:02Speaker 3: to pressure the hell out of Julian Sane. I don't
- 7:05Speaker 3: know if Maryland has the personnel to make him truly uncomfortable,
- 7:08Speaker 3: but Is this a defense that truly sells out to
- 7:12Speaker 3: defend Jeremiah Smith? Do you see press man with two
- 7:16Speaker 3: different guys at the line of scrimmage? Or is it
- 7:19Speaker 3: the press man consistently and a safety hanging out over
- 7:22Speaker 3: the top? Do you really angle everything that way and
- 7:25Speaker 3: you dare Julian Sayen to beat you with everybody else?
- 7:29Speaker 3: He probably can. You would have to do some damage
- 7:32Speaker 3: to the running game to make this all on Julian Sayen.
- 7:35Speaker 3: But I don't think there's a lot of good answers
- 7:37Speaker 3: defensively for Maryland against Ohio State. And on the flip side,
- 7:41Speaker 3: Maryland's offense against Ohio State's defense, it's been shown so
- 7:44Speaker 3: far this year that if you can run the football
- 7:46Speaker 3: effectively against Ohio State, you have a chance. Maryland's 89th
- 7:51Speaker 3: in the country right now running the football. So I
- 7:53Speaker 3: just don't put a lot of stock in what they're
- 7:55Speaker 3: going to be able to do in that department. Malik
- 7:58Speaker 3: Washington is their best bet, and he would have to
- 8:01Speaker 3: play Superman ball. And he's in a position right now
- 8:03Speaker 3: where the supporting cast he had last year in his
- 8:06Speaker 3: first campaign, really good freshman year, but he had better
- 8:10Speaker 3: supporting talent. He had better weapons to work with. Right
- 8:13Speaker 3: now he's been a little turnover prone to start this season,
- 8:15Speaker 3: and you can feel like he's trying to go above
- 8:18Speaker 3: and beyond and that it felt like almost like what
- 8:20Speaker 3: Camario Taylor was dealing with for Mississippi State against Alabama
- 8:24Speaker 3: is that, hey, Camario is going to have to be
- 8:26Speaker 3: the reason that you guys overcome a far superior team.
- 8:30Speaker 3: I don't know if Malik Washington is prepared to do
- 8:32Speaker 3: that for Maryland. I wonder if this is the last
- 8:35Speaker 3: game for Mike Loxley as the head coach of Maryland football.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I can see it circling that way.
- 8:41Speaker 1: You see a lot of times once a the two,
- 8:45Speaker 1: the two reasons a coach gets fired in season are
- 8:48Speaker 1: either an incredibly embarrassing loss or you reach a point
- 8:53Speaker 1: where a bowl is no longer possible, you know, or
- 8:55Speaker 1: whatever win threshold you were looking for.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Seven, eight, nine wins is no longer possible.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Once you cross that threshold or get publicly humiliated against it.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 1: When we think about Florida state, you know, that's why
- 9:08Speaker 1: everybody circled the Miami game, because if they lose that
- 9:10Speaker 1: game by 30 or 40, That's probably.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Enough embarrassment at 7 p.m.
- 9:14Speaker 1: On ESPN on a Saturday night to say, all right, man,
- 9:17Speaker 1: we got to move on from this. So certainly could
- 9:19Speaker 1: see that this week. You talk about Ohio State cleaning
- 9:22Speaker 1: up some of the little things. I do wonder how
- 9:26Speaker 1: this game is treated by Ryan Day. How, you know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: if you're up 28 and very, very comfortable at halftime,
- 9:36Speaker 1: do you continue to keep the foot down or do
- 9:38Speaker 1: you kind of look.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Ahead to that?
- 9:40Speaker 1: Um, not in a bad way, but look ahead to
- 9:42Speaker 1: that Indiana game on the road next week and say,
- 9:44Speaker 1: we're going to get some young guys, some reps, maybe
- 9:46Speaker 1: this loss for Maryland isn't as embarrassing, but we all
- 9:50Speaker 1: understand that we call the dogs off and we let
- 9:52Speaker 1: our backups kind of slowly creep the score up as
- 9:54Speaker 1: opposed to just throwing jump balls to Smith to, to
- 9:57Speaker 1: make the score more impressive. So I'd me, that's, I
- 10:01Speaker 1: hate to, my uncle is from Maryland and loves the
- 10:04Speaker 1: Terps more than anything.
- 10:05Speaker 2: So sorry, Yonk.
- 10:07Speaker 1: But yeah, that's the most interesting part of this to
- 10:09Speaker 1: me is what does Ohio state do to get ready
- 10:11Speaker 1: for next week?
- 10:12Speaker 2: How do they treat this game with respect to their
- 10:15Speaker 2: biggest game of the year?
- 10:17Speaker 1: Outside of Michigan, obviously, for the rivalry purposes, but their
- 10:19Speaker 1: biggest opponent of the year in Indiana next week. And
- 10:23Speaker 1: when you go into a game and that's the biggest
- 10:24Speaker 1: talking point is, how are you preparing for next week?
- 10:27Speaker 1: It's not usually a good sign for the opponent.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Ohio State, to the points I was
- 10:32Speaker 3: making before, I would expect Matt Patricia and this defense
- 10:35Speaker 3: to try to button things up a little bit more
- 10:38Speaker 3: and play maybe a little bit longer with the starters.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Not that they were pulling guys left and right there
- 10:43Speaker 3: against Iowa, but when Kalinsky came into the game and
- 10:45Speaker 3: just marched Iowa right down for it, a touchdown off
- 10:48Speaker 3: multiple passes on that drive. It felt like a letdown,
- 10:51Speaker 3: and obviously the game was never in doubt. But if
- 10:53Speaker 3: you're going to be a perfectionist, then you want that
- 10:56Speaker 3: to be improved. So I wouldn't be shocked if you
- 10:57Speaker 3: saw a lot of the primary guys on defense play
- 11:00Speaker 3: a lot more reps deep into the game, even if
- 11:02Speaker 3: this is out of hand. But I would expect kind
- 11:04Speaker 3: of what I saw from Ohio State in the second
- 11:06Speaker 3: half against Iowa, in that it was the Jackson and
- 11:09Speaker 3: Jackson show. They were handing the ball off a lot more.
- 11:11Speaker 3: If you decided to take Jeremiah off the field, you
- 11:13Speaker 3: don't need Jeremiah Smith anymore. to win this game theoretically,
- 11:17Speaker 3: you're going to play him, obviously.
- 11:19Speaker 2: But I would.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Expect Ohio State to continue to get more work done
- 11:22Speaker 3: in the second half when it comes to running the
- 11:24Speaker 3: football effectively. So that's what I'm looking out for. And
- 11:27Speaker 3: to my point about Loxley before, granted, losing on the
- 11:30Speaker 3: road to arguably the best team in college football, Ohio State,
- 11:34Speaker 3: isn't a fireable offense. But if you, for instance, lose
- 11:37Speaker 3: to Rutgers the following week at home, that could be
- 11:39Speaker 3: a fireable offense. So I feel like it's a lame
- 11:42Speaker 3: duck situation for Mike Loxley. I think he's a talented
- 11:45Speaker 3: coach and has been a talented defensive coordinator in the past,
- 11:48Speaker 3: but I think we're circling the drain here.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Unfortunately, next week, the Shiano Loxley fire bowl, if they
- 11:56Speaker 4: make it to that, Tom, Tom Hannafin, the power to
- 11:59Speaker 4: make sure that you are subscribed to.
