- 0:00Speaker 1: We do know that there was a there's a situation
- 0:02Speaker 1: where another young Darwin man has had his car stolen
- 0:06Speaker 1: and taken on a joy ride to a remote community,
- 0:08Speaker 1: with the crime filmed and uploaded to social media.
- 0:12Speaker 2: The nineteen year old had dropped his toyo to High.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Lux at the Mechanic gets to get fixed when it
- 0:18Speaker 1: was stolen. His mother joins me on the line right now,
- 0:21Speaker 1: Good morning to you, Lee.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Good morning Katie.
- 0:25Speaker 2: How are you really well?
- 0:26Speaker 1: Thanks so much for your time this morning, Lee. What
- 0:29Speaker 1: happened to your son's ute?
- 0:32Speaker 3: Look, he dropped it off mechanics two weeks ago, late
- 0:38Speaker 3: at night because there was some mechanical issues, so he
- 0:41Speaker 3: dropped it off and I mean obviously he didn't want
- 0:43Speaker 3: it to break down, so we're going to take the
- 0:46Speaker 3: keys around in the morning. And about three hours after
- 0:49Speaker 3: he dropped it off, they stolen the window and jump
- 0:52Speaker 3: started it.
- 0:53Speaker 2: What was this last weekly?
- 0:56Speaker 3: No, it was two weeks ago.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yep, so two weeks ago. Now where did it end up?
- 1:02Speaker 3: Look, it was kind of all over the place.
- 1:04Speaker 4: It was at Daddy River and he contacted the police
- 1:08Speaker 4: and they said, yet, we're aware of that, but we
- 1:09Speaker 4: think it's on its way to Pepminardi and then back
- 1:14Speaker 4: to the Daily River. But there's someone on Facebook that
- 1:18Speaker 4: I don't have Facebook, that they it's a stolid car
- 1:22Speaker 4: Facebook site he founded and contacted him with some pictures
- 1:27Speaker 4: and they were live streaming on it and they said
- 1:30Speaker 4: it is your car, and he said it's definitely my
- 1:34Speaker 4: car because there's some things that he made on He
- 1:36Speaker 4: recognized it. Anyway, it doesn't matter, but live streaming and
- 1:38Speaker 4: that's trooping around in it.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Live streaming themselves in your son's car.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Yeah, that's next level arrogant, isn't it.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's I'd love to say it's unbelievablely but it's
- 1:50Speaker 1: actually not anymore. Yeah, you know, that's the really disappointing part.
- 1:55Speaker 1: So where is he at in terms of trying to
- 1:57Speaker 1: get it back? Has he been able to get it back?
- 2:00Speaker 3: Yeah? Look, they called up last oh look at somesor
- 2:05Speaker 3: I think it was Thursday night and I said, we've
- 2:07Speaker 3: just found it. It's at Daddy River. So that eight
- 2:10Speaker 3: o'clos at night, he hired a trailer, went out with
- 2:13Speaker 3: his mate and picked it up. But as you would expect,
- 2:16Speaker 3: it's in a pretty bad stay.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Now, tell me a little bit about your son's car.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I imagine it was his pride and joy and something
- 2:26Speaker 1: that he worked pretty hard for.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Oh you know what, I was gutted for him. That
- 2:31Speaker 3: was the first car he brought, and he brought at eighteen,
- 2:34Speaker 3: and he paid, he paid cash for it. He'd saved
- 2:37Speaker 3: up that money. Yeah, it was it was his pride
- 2:40Speaker 3: and joy. Yeah, it's devastating. You know, that's a pretty
- 2:45Speaker 3: major asset for someone who's nineteen. He's just and he
- 2:47Speaker 3: was getting it fixed to salad. He's just moved out
- 2:50Speaker 3: of home. He's got bills to pay it this, Yeah,
- 2:53Speaker 3: pretty big asset to him. Not to have.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Lee is that you're going to be repairable?
- 3:01Speaker 3: Nah, I don't. I don't think so. I've taken the
- 3:03Speaker 3: tool boxes, the roof stand, the tray stands, they took
- 3:06Speaker 3: the battery of feelings. But look, you know what they
- 3:09Speaker 3: painted inside and out, there's a lot of I don't
- 3:12Speaker 3: think so. They haven't had a chance to look at
- 3:14Speaker 3: the luck, at the engine. But unlikely.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Oh my goodness.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Now, what have police said to you at this point
- 3:25Speaker 1: in time, or what have they said to your son
- 3:26Speaker 1: at this point?
- 3:29Speaker 3: No? Nothing, Look, I understand they're very understaffed, but we
- 3:33Speaker 3: know there's we've got the Instagram account for these people.
- 3:38Speaker 3: We've been following it. And the police said to they
- 3:43Speaker 3: said to him, we know them, we know who they are.
- 3:46Speaker 3: And when he comes like, well, can you just go
- 3:49Speaker 3: and talk to them?
- 3:50Speaker 4: And you know, like they said, they're understaffed and disappealed
- 3:54Speaker 4: them and they've got a big area to cover.
- 3:56Speaker 3: But I just I just don't get it. We know
- 3:58Speaker 3: you have the tart, know who was in it live streaming.
- 4:02Speaker 4: I'm not no, nothing's happening.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Oh, your son must be absolutely gutted.
- 4:09Speaker 3: I really do feel for him when he caught up
- 4:12Speaker 3: because a mechanic caught up and said, did you drop
- 4:14Speaker 3: your car? Mate? You said he? He said, it's not
- 4:16Speaker 3: here and there smashed glass. So he's gotten some video
- 4:20Speaker 3: recording from his place and the shop opposite him. And
- 4:24Speaker 3: I just knew what statement if he ever looked that
- 4:28Speaker 3: car back on you, what state it was going to
- 4:29Speaker 3: be in. It was never going to be good.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Oh Lee, And so I mean, don't don't name it
- 4:34Speaker 1: for us on air, But there's an Instagram account where
- 4:37Speaker 1: they're sharing all these videos and photos of cars that
- 4:39Speaker 1: they're stealing.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Absolutely, and a live streamer and there are some pictures
- 4:46Speaker 3: of them, but they take them down, you know, not
- 4:49Speaker 3: long after they've done it, so it's a bit of here,
- 4:51Speaker 3: check this out, and then it's oho. There's no record
- 4:53Speaker 3: of an except that you can screenshot it.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I firmly, firmly believe that we need to get tougher
- 4:59Speaker 1: if there are people that are stealing cars, if they're
- 5:02Speaker 1: breaking the law, and they're live streaming it on social media,
- 5:05Speaker 1: then they should be getting additional punishment to whatever punishment
- 5:10Speaker 1: they received. They should be getting additional punishment because it
- 5:14Speaker 1: is clear to me that I was going to say
- 5:17Speaker 1: a rude word, that they're trying to outdo each other.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, yes, yeah, I agree, I agree something is
- 5:25Speaker 3: definitely something needs to be done.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Hey, I understand as well that your son was saving
- 5:30Speaker 1: up to go to the Fink and a concert, So
- 5:32Speaker 1: I mean, what is he was obviously trying to sell
- 5:35Speaker 1: the car and also trying to save up to go
- 5:37Speaker 1: to the Fink Desert Race.
- 5:39Speaker 2: What's this going to mean? Lee?
- 5:42Speaker 3: Look, I feel like he's going to have to choose
- 5:44Speaker 3: because I mean, he's just needs out of home, so
- 5:47Speaker 3: obviously this expenses there he wasn't expecting, which is kind
- 5:50Speaker 3: of joyful as a power to watch Pulvagamut. That all
- 5:54Speaker 3: doesn't cost money, mate, But yeah, he was going to think,
- 5:56Speaker 3: and he's got tickets which he just about sold his
- 6:00Speaker 3: soul to get for the Luke Kum's. But I think
- 6:02Speaker 3: it is Luke comes.
- 6:03Speaker 2: He's my favorite as.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Well, So yeah, I'm not sure he's going to have
- 6:10Speaker 4: to but yeah, maybe you just have to pick one
- 6:13Speaker 4: of them.
- 6:14Speaker 3: It's really disappointing. It kind of wasn't Yeah, look, it
- 6:18Speaker 3: sucks and I feel quite angry as well. Yeah, who
- 6:21Speaker 3: hasn't experienced the impact of I've had this house.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Has broken ety twice and my daughter's had two cards
- 6:28Speaker 4: sole and it's just it's out of control.
- 6:31Speaker 1: It feels that way, doesn't it, Lee, And you know,
- 6:34Speaker 1: people like people are really fed up. I feel like
- 6:37Speaker 1: I'm banging my head against a wall, you know, trying
- 6:40Speaker 1: to make the government to understand just how Territorians are
- 6:43Speaker 1: feeling at this point, and it's frustrating.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Yeah, well we're all living it, really, aren't we.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Yeah, we truly are.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Lee.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I really appreciate you having a chat with us this morning.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Thank you so much for coming on the show.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for having me, Katie, thank you,
