In 1963, Craig Breedlove shattered land-speed records on Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats, hitting 407 mph in the Spirit of America — a feat that would evolve into a high-stakes arms race with rivals like Tom Green and Art Arfons. Breedlove pushed beyond 600 mph by 1965, surviving terrifying crashes including one where brakes and parachutes failed, sending him through telephone poles into a salt pond unscathed.
