- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, it's time for a very special Breaking Bad News.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Ooh, been a minute.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's been a minute. This has been kind of going
- 0:05Speaker 1: on for a while. Hannah's on the line. She wants
- 0:08Speaker 1: to do a Breaking Bad News to her mom. But
- 0:10Speaker 1: there's a whole setup to this, obviously. But part of
- 0:13Speaker 1: it was that she was living. Hannah, what's the story?
- 0:14Speaker 1: You're living in London?
- 0:16Speaker 3: Yep, I live in London, England, but I'm originally from
- 0:19Speaker 3: the Phoenix area. And so my mom and I have
- 0:21Speaker 3: been listening to your show for over 20 years. And
- 0:24Speaker 3: so she is a big, big fan and she is
- 0:28Speaker 3: about to turn 60 and she is convinced that because
- 0:31Speaker 3: I'm in the U.S. right now in Texas looking at
- 0:33Speaker 3: wedding venues that I am coming to surprise her for
- 0:36Speaker 3: her birthday next week. So I thought this would be
- 0:40Speaker 3: a great opportunity to get her on the line and
- 0:43Speaker 3: do something that she's obsessed with. And she thinks that
- 0:47Speaker 3: she's hopeful that I'm flying out on Monday morning for
- 0:50Speaker 3: her birthday. The bad news is that I'm not flying
- 0:54Speaker 3: out on Monday. I'm actually flying out on Saturday. And
- 0:57Speaker 3: we are going to go to the movies together instead
- 1:00Speaker 3: of her and her friends going to the movies.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Okay, so you're going to surprise her a couple days early.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05Speaker 2: That's cute.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Okay. Okay.
- 1:06Speaker 2: That's cute. So instead of her thinking maybe you won't
- 1:09Speaker 2: see her at all, although she was hoping for a surprise,
- 1:12Speaker 2: you're going to hit her right away. You're going to
- 1:14Speaker 2: be there sooner than she can ever imagine.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Exactly. And I think that she's going to be really
- 1:19Speaker 3: disappointed at first because she's going to think that we're
- 1:21Speaker 3: telling her that I'm not coming. And then I think
- 1:24Speaker 3: she's just going to be so excited that I will
- 1:26Speaker 3: be there and that she's on the air with you guys.
- 1:28Speaker 1: We have Hannah on the phone, and you know she's
- 1:31Speaker 1: coming to visit you. Yeah, but she has some bad
- 1:33Speaker 1: news she wants to tell you, but she picked one
- 1:34Speaker 1: of us to do it for you.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Don't tell her that I'm coming to visit at all.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Just say, in Texas, she wanted to talk to you
- 1:42Speaker 3: on the air and break some bad news.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Does she know that you're in Texas already, or does
- 1:45Speaker 1: she think you're still in London?
- 1:47Speaker 3: She knows I'm in Texas.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:49Speaker 3: And I think you should have her guess what the
- 1:51Speaker 3: bad news is, too.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:52Speaker 3: I think that would be hilarious. Okay.
- 1:55Speaker 2: You're going to torture your poor mom.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Who wants to do the bad news?
- 1:58Speaker 2: Kyle does. Kyle's got it.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You got it?
- 2:01Speaker 2: I volunteer, Kyle. Poor mama.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So it'll be like, what's your mom's name, Hannah?
- 2:06Speaker 3: Beth. Beth.
- 2:07Speaker 1: So you're going to be like, Beth. But don't we
- 2:08Speaker 1: just say mom?
- 2:09Speaker 4: Right, right.
- 2:09Speaker 1: So you rip it open, mom. So what's the bad news? Mom,
- 2:13Speaker 1: you're not going to go see Verity with your friends tomorrow.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I'm not coming to see you on your birthday.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Hannah's been thinking about this. Hannah's a planner.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I've been talking to her for 11 months.
- 2:22Speaker 3: I'm not messing around with this.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Okay, hold on. I'm not coming to see you on
- 2:26Speaker 1: your birthday.
- 2:27Speaker 2: On Monday.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Why do you say Monday? Is her birthday Monday?
- 2:31Speaker 3: Her birthday's Monday.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Let's just say on your birthday because she knows it's
- 2:33Speaker 1: on Monday.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I'm not coming to see you on your birthday. And
- 2:36Speaker 1: then pause. And then pause. Because she's going to be like, what?
- 2:40Speaker 1: You're not? How sad. And then let her react, react, react.
- 2:44Speaker 1: And then hold on, there's more. Hold on, there's more. Okay.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'm going to see you tomorrow, mommy. Like that. Does
- 2:50Speaker 1: that sound right, Hannah?
- 2:52Speaker 3: Yep, that sounds perfect.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Okay. Let's call Beth. So you stay quiet for a second.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Okay. Hello?
- 3:11Speaker 2: Hey, is Beth there, please? This is Beth. Hey, Beth,
- 3:15Speaker 2: it's John Jane Rich. How's it going? Oh, good. Can
- 3:19Speaker 2: we put you on the radio for just a moment, please?
- 3:21Speaker 3: Sure.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Beth, what city are you in right now?
- 3:25Speaker 3: I am in Queen Creek. Oh, good.
- 3:27Speaker 1: I understand you listen to our show every once in
- 3:28Speaker 1: a while.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Yes. Somebody really should.
- 3:33Speaker 1: You're what? Say that again.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I said, I'm guessing my daughter put you up to this.
- 3:37Speaker 1: She did because we have a segment on our show
- 3:40Speaker 1: called Breaking Bad News. We haven't done it in a while.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Have you heard of it?
- 3:43Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Well, what are you laughing at? What are you laughing at, Beth?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Oh, is she pregnant? Why is that bad news? Sometimes
- 3:54Speaker 2: people don't want babies right now, Rich, and that's fine.
- 3:58Speaker 4: She knows this segment is what she's saying.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So here's the deal. Here's the deal, Beth. Your daughter, Hannah,
- 4:03Speaker 1: is on the line with us right now. Before you
- 4:05Speaker 1: guys say hi, I just want to let you know
- 4:06Speaker 1: that there is some bad news she wants to deliver
- 4:08Speaker 1: to you. She asked us to do it. We have
- 4:11Speaker 1: the bad news written, and it's in an envelope. And
- 4:15Speaker 1: Kyle is probably going to read it to you when
- 4:17Speaker 1: the time comes, but now you can see. So it
- 4:20Speaker 1: is some bad news and she's been wanting to tell
- 4:23Speaker 1: you this for a while. We didn't know how to
- 4:24Speaker 1: do it. So Hannah, you want to say hi to
- 4:26Speaker 1: your mom?
- 4:28Speaker 3: Hi mom. Hi honey.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Okay. So Hannah, are you okay hearing the bad news? Yep.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I'm ready.
- 4:38Speaker 1: And I want you to know that I'm sorry, Beth,
- 4:40Speaker 1: are you ready for the bad news?
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yes, I am.
- 4:42Speaker 3: There's nothing she could say or do that would, be
- 4:45Speaker 3: that bad.
- 4:46Speaker 1: So I'm ready.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Okay.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Well, I just want to let you know, if it
- 4:48Speaker 1: does cause an emotional reaction and you're going to cry
- 4:51Speaker 1: or something, just take your time. Don't worry about it. Okay.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Okay.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Okay. Kyle, whenever you're ready.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Okay, Beth, I have it right here.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Okay, Beth, here we go.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Mom, I know you were expecting me to, but I'm
- 5:07Speaker 4: not coming to see you on your birthday.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Okay. I really wasn't expecting you to honey. It would
- 5:13Speaker 3: have been nice, but Well, I know that you just,
- 5:17Speaker 3: you keep telling your friends that you thought I was
- 5:19Speaker 3: going to come and surprise you since I'm in Texas.
- 5:23Speaker 3: And I just didn't want you to get your hopes up.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Beth, there's actually more on this, the letter.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:30Speaker 4: So after it says, I'm not coming to see you
- 5:32Speaker 4: on your birthday, it says, I'll actually be seeing you tomorrow.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Really?
- 5:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:43Speaker 3: You have plans to go see the movies tomorrow? You
- 5:45Speaker 3: have plans to go to the movies with your friends,
- 5:47Speaker 3: but I'm going to be there. We're going to go
- 5:49Speaker 3: see the movie.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Okay.
- 5:50Speaker 3: That's amazing.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I'm crying.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Is J.D.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Coming too?
- 6:00Speaker 4: J.D.
- 6:00Speaker 3: 's my fiance. He's not coming. It is just going
- 6:04Speaker 3: to be me, but we're going to have a lot
- 6:06Speaker 3: of fun. And what's really funny is that a couple
- 6:10Speaker 3: weeks ago, I made you dinner reservations for Sunday night.
- 6:15Speaker 3: And then my brother texted me earlier this week and
- 6:18Speaker 3: said that mom made dinner reservations for her and the
- 6:21Speaker 3: family at the same restaurant at the same time on Sunday. So, mom,
- 6:26Speaker 3: I have another reservation that includes me. Oh, good.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Okay.
- 6:29Speaker 3: What a fun family you guys have. That's amazing.
- 6:34Speaker 1: And that's breaking bad news.
- 6:36Speaker 3: This is a very best treat for me.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I know. You know, the original plan was to have her,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you were going to open the door and she'd be outside.
- 6:45Speaker 3: That would have been amazing.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I know, but we couldn't get the flight arranged in time.
- 6:49Speaker 4: All right.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Anyway, happy birthday, Beth. Thanks for listening, you guys.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Oh, I love you guys so much. You guys make
- 6:55Speaker 3: my day every single day. So thank you. I'll see
- 6:58Speaker 3: you tomorrow, Ham. See you, Mom. Thank you, guys.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Love you.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Love you.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Love you.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Bye.
