Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: What's going on? Everyone? Emily body here. Good morning.
- 0:21Speaker 2: You are listening to five minute Friday or good afternoon
- 0:24Speaker 2: or good evening, depending on when you're listening to this.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I feel as though overwhelmed is loading, and I'll tell
- 0:32Speaker 2: you why. I have many different trips in the next
- 0:37Speaker 2: seven days. Three to be specific. I'm headed to Boston today.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I am there for the weekend through Monday. I am
- 0:47Speaker 2: back to New York for the night. I have an
- 0:50Speaker 2: event that night that I need to go to. I
- 0:54Speaker 2: fly to San Francisco from Tuesday to Thursday next week.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Then I'm back to New York.
- 1:01Speaker 2: And finally I'm down to DC next Friday night to
- 1:08Speaker 2: do some personal stuff and also host a conversation on
- 1:12Speaker 2: behalf of every Woman's Marathon.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I am in.
- 1:18Speaker 2: So four different cities over the next seven days, and yeah,
- 1:24Speaker 2: that can lead to overwhelmed. It can also lead to
- 1:27Speaker 2: me being out of my normal routine, and so I
- 1:30Speaker 2: have a few things that become non negotiable for me
- 1:35Speaker 2: when overwhelm starts to seep in. The First thing is that,
- 1:41Speaker 2: regardless of where I am, the morning routine sticks period
- 1:45Speaker 2: hard stop. I wake up, I journal, I do breath work,
- 1:49Speaker 2: I move my body, I take my supplements. It's like
- 1:52Speaker 2: clockwork for me, and it is integral to allow and
- 1:57Speaker 2: empower me to show up as the best possible version
- 2:01Speaker 2: of myself in that day. Does that mean that it's
- 2:04Speaker 2: not going to be perhaps a little inconvenient not to
- 2:09Speaker 2: have all of my normal tools at my disposal to
- 2:12Speaker 2: do these things, of course, but we have to be
- 2:15Speaker 2: flexible knowing what the goal is. The goal is for
- 2:18Speaker 2: me to have some sort of normalcy even when I'm
- 2:23Speaker 2: not in my typical environment, so that I can feel
- 2:26Speaker 2: better in my body. When I feel good in my body,
- 2:29Speaker 2: I have a better attitude. I can show up better
- 2:31Speaker 2: for myself, and I can show up better for the
- 2:33Speaker 2: obligations that I have on deck. So the first thing
- 2:36Speaker 2: that becomes a non negotiable is doing my morning routine
- 2:40Speaker 2: and making that a priority. The second thing that I
- 2:44Speaker 2: really take stock of when I'm feeling overwhelmed is what
- 2:48Speaker 2: are my inputs? Who am I surrounding myself with, who
- 2:51Speaker 2: am I spending my time talking to, What am I reading? Consuming?
- 2:55Speaker 2: Am I doom scrolling? These are all questions to ask yourself,
- 3:00Speaker 2: and it can be helpful to work backwards. So if
- 3:03Speaker 2: you think from your inputs. Your thoughts grow, your actions,
- 3:07Speaker 2: your ideas flow. Okay, so if you want better ideas
- 3:12Speaker 2: and actions, which I think that's something that we can
- 3:14Speaker 2: all relate to, then you need to look at what
- 3:17Speaker 2: you're thinking and to get quote unquote better thinking. Then
- 3:21Speaker 2: you need to really examine where your source is coming from.
- 3:26Speaker 2: What are your inputs. So this looks like two things
- 3:31Speaker 2: for me. One, I want to make sure that I'm
- 3:33Speaker 2: spending as much quality time or time with people that
- 3:36Speaker 2: make me feel full, that feel my cup, that make
- 3:39Speaker 2: me have that cup half full instead of half empty perspective.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I'm being as intentional about that as possible. And the
- 3:48Speaker 2: next thing, I genuinely try to be more positive on
- 3:52Speaker 2: the days where that positivity doesn't feel like it's flowing naturally.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I find that finding small.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Gratitude dudes in your ten minute block can be something
- 4:04Speaker 2: that starts to shift that perspective. So maybe I don't
- 4:08Speaker 2: wake up in the best mood I'm feeling, like I said.
- 4:11Speaker 1: A little overwhelmed.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I will identify one good thing that's happening around me
- 4:15Speaker 2: in that moment. So maybe the way that the light
- 4:19Speaker 2: is streaming into the room is really beautiful right now?
- 4:22Speaker 2: And then what I find is in the next ten minutes.
- 4:24Speaker 2: If I do that again and I think to myself, Wow,
- 4:27Speaker 2: this coffee tastes really fresh and it's really giving me
- 4:31Speaker 2: some extra energy, and that feels really good to my body,
- 4:33Speaker 2: then those highlights, those gratitudes start to transform into an
- 4:38Speaker 2: overall positive perspective. You're following me, right, So I work
- 4:44Speaker 2: consciously to be more positive, to choose the positive, and
- 4:48Speaker 2: to focus on the good. A friend of mine made
- 4:52Speaker 2: a joke the other day about how I am the
- 4:54Speaker 2: person that certainly makes an effort to notice like the
- 4:57Speaker 2: happy couple walking across the street and seat of the
- 5:00Speaker 2: dirty puddle of water on the ground, and she is
- 5:03Speaker 2: the person who more often than not notices at first
- 5:07Speaker 2: the dirty puddle.
- 5:08Speaker 1: And that is a perspective.
- 5:11Speaker 2: That is a mindset that I have truly put in
- 5:14Speaker 2: effort to cultivate, and one that you can cultivate too.
- 5:19Speaker 2: So again, the lesson here is that I'm not telling
- 5:23Speaker 2: you overwhelms not going to happen.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I'm not going to tell you to ignore it.
- 5:26Speaker 2: But I am here to reinforce that there are habits
- 5:30Speaker 2: and choices that you can make that will help you
- 5:33Speaker 2: during the times that you are feeling overwhelmed.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I've got this. You've got this.
- 5:39Speaker 2: My listener prompt for you this week, in the last
- 5:42Speaker 2: ten minutes, maybe since you started listening to this show,
- 5:46Speaker 2: maybe after you got out of bed, maybe on your
- 5:48Speaker 2: commute to work, whenever, in the last ten minutes that
- 5:52Speaker 2: you're listening to this, highlight one good thing, one good
- 5:56Speaker 2: thing from your last ten minutes, and make an effort
- 6:00Speaker 2: to continue that as the day goes on. And now
- 6:04Speaker 2: a listener question. Hey, Emily, I'm Krisha, a longtime listener
- 6:08Speaker 2: of the show.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I love your.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Idea for doing one new thing a week in twenty
- 6:13Speaker 2: twenty five and would love to give it a try.
- 6:15Speaker 2: How do you find different things to do? Like attending
- 6:18Speaker 2: a poetry slam? Is so unique and creative? Thank you
- 6:21Speaker 2: so much for your inspiration. This is a good question. Honestly,
- 6:26Speaker 2: at the date of the year, I just made one
- 6:28Speaker 2: long list of all of these things that I have
- 6:31Speaker 2: never had the opportunity to do, and so every Sunday
- 6:35Speaker 2: I pick something from the list and put it in
- 6:38Speaker 2: the schedule for the week ahead. Now, granted, sometimes I
- 6:41Speaker 2: have to plan decently far ahead to make some of
- 6:45Speaker 2: these things happen. So although some weeks it's chosen on
- 6:50Speaker 2: the Sunday of the week that's about to begin, other weeks,
- 6:53Speaker 2: I'll have something solidified weeks ahead of time. For instance,
- 6:57Speaker 2: in a couple of weeks, I'm going to the opera
- 6:59Speaker 2: for the first time, and I've known about that for
- 7:02Speaker 2: three weeks and that was on the list. And I
- 7:05Speaker 2: feel as though as I'm executing this and sharing bits
- 7:08Speaker 2: and pieces of it on the weekly Hurdle substack and
- 7:11Speaker 2: then over on my social people are messaging me with
- 7:15Speaker 2: more ideas and it's becoming a group experiment of sorts.
- 7:18Speaker 2: So on that note, if you do have any exciting
- 7:22Speaker 2: ideas for me, or you rep something that you want
- 7:26Speaker 2: me to check out, or you did this really cool
- 7:29Speaker 2: experience that I must try, I am certainly all ears,
- 7:33Speaker 2: but make a list and don't be hesitant to put
- 7:36Speaker 2: like some crazy stuff on that list, Like it's not
- 7:40Speaker 2: every day of the year that I'm going to take
- 7:42Speaker 2: my first trip to Mexico City, but I want to
- 7:45Speaker 2: do that at some point this year as an example,
- 7:48Speaker 2: And that's how works. Make sure you're following along with
- 7:51Speaker 2: Hurdle over on social it's at Hurdle Podcast. I'm over
- 7:53Speaker 2: at Emily a body, Another hurdle conquered. Cash, You guys,
- 7:58Speaker 2: next time in my
