  NASCAR weekend. Let's jump in the comments.

  Let's break it down. So I did go to the race on

  Sunday. I was also at Worldwide
• 0:20
  Technology Raceway on Saturday for a bit.
• 0:24
  And so for people that don't know, the Saint Louis racetrack
• 0:27
  is in Madison, IL, It's about, I don't know, 5-6 miles from
• 0:32
  downtown Saint Louis, obviously on the Illinois side.
• 0:36
  And let's just start with this, just a Chamber of Commerce
• 0:40
  weekend of weather, absolutely picture perfect weather at
• 0:44
  Gateway. Everybody still calls it
• 0:47
  Gateway. But for those of you who don't
• 0:50
  live in Saint Louis or haven't been to Saint Louis and and this
• 0:53
  race used to be in early June the first three years, which was
• 0:57
  also fine weather wise, but Saint Louis in July and August,
• 1:04
  it's terrible here. It's absolutely terrible here.
• 1:07
  And I've lived here for 17 years.
• 1:10
  It's 9500° with frickin humidity just out the ass.
• 1:17
  I mean a wet heat. So this past weekend, Saturday
• 1:22
  and Sunday, no rain. It was like 7770 eight 80°,
• 1:26
  hardly any humidity. It was really, really nice in
• 1:30
  Saint Louis. So walking around the track both
• 1:34
  Saturday and Sunday, I just got the feel that, look, Saint Louis
• 1:40
  has always been a racing town and a racing area, I would say
• 1:45
  more so a racing region. And in the past, they'd had
• 1:50
  Xfinity, obviously, and some trucks and all that.
• 1:52
  But this is Year 4 now for a Cup race for Saint Louis.
• 1:56
  And I think it's fair to say, am I biased?
• 1:59
  Yes. But also, I covered sports for
• 2:02
  20 years all over the country and covered MLB and NHL and, and
• 2:09
  you know, NBA when I was in Michigan and MLB.
• 2:12
  If I said that, I can't remember if I already said that, but I've
• 2:15
  been all over the country covering sports and NASCAR
• 2:18
  races. I used to work in Lansing, so we
• 2:20
  covered Michigan International Speedway.
• 2:22
  And what I'm trying to say is Saint Louis feels now like a
• 2:27
  NASCAR Cup city, a NASCAR Cup town.
• 2:31
  When you walk around, you see the fans, you feel the energy.
• 2:36
  I feel like we belong and in the first couple years, if you're
• 2:40
  wondering, OK, Saint Louis, not necessarily your traditional
• 2:44
  NASCAR market. Is it going to survive here?
• 2:47
  Is it going to thrive here? It was a a nice crowd and I, I
• 2:53
  feel like this date should be here for a long time.
• 2:56
  And I, I think NASCAR is going in this direction anyway of
• 3:00
  having more tracks involved with one date than having back in the
• 3:04
  day where you had so many tracks with, with two dates.
• 3:07
  So start right there. And, and what I was saying
• 3:11
  though, is this area has always been huge into racing.
• 3:14
  Obviously you have IndyCar at the track, the Bommarito
• 3:18
  Automotive Group 500. So you had IndyCar for a long
• 3:22
  time. I mentioned you had the Xfinity
• 3:25
  and the trucks going back years and years and years, NHRA.
• 3:28
  And I think this is still the case.
• 3:30
  I could be wrong for a while there and, and maybe this is
• 3:33
  still the case, but Gateway Worldwide Technology Raceway,
• 3:37
  the only track in the country that had the big three.
• 3:40
  We're not counting F1. We're talking about American
• 3:43
  racing. OK, but the only track to have
• 3:46
  NASCAR Cup, IndyCar and NHRA at the same track?
• 3:52
  That's pretty cool. But it keeps taking me forever
• 3:56
  to get to my point about being a racing region.
• 3:59
  Dirt racing is so big in this area.
• 4:03
  Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, I mean, you don't have to go that
• 4:08
  far South, getting down to Arkansas and all that.
• 4:13
  Just the fact that there's so much dirt racing within an hour
• 4:17
  or two away. If you guys follow Kenny
• 4:19
  Wallace, the amount of tracks that he can get to in just an
• 4:23
  hour or two, I mean all over the place, not just Tri-City
• 4:27
  Speedway, which is Grant City, Illinois, not just Federated
• 4:32
  Auto Parts Raceway Park I believe is the new name, but
• 4:35
  that's pevely Missouri. So we're talking both those are
• 4:38
  within 30 minutes or so of downtown Saint Louis.
• 4:42
  But you got what, Brownstown, IL, the Brownstown Bullring,
• 4:47
  There's all kinds of tracks up in Illinois and all that.
• 4:50
  So we've always been a racing region, but I feel like now,
• 4:54
  Year 4, we're really becoming a NASCAR Cup town.
• 4:58
  I, I truly feel like we belong now.

  I'm not saying it's Daytona, I'm not saying it's Bristol and all
• 5:04
  that Talladega, but I, I feel like Saint Louis is, is showing
• 5:07
  out strong. So we'll just kind of start

  Saturday. I got there.

  I was just kind of walk in the Cup garage.
• 5:15
  This was before practice, before qualifying.
• 5:18
  The media interviews had started.
• 5:20
  I was in the Media Center. Austin Sindrich had just come in

  and he did his his media spiel there.

  I had, I had to leave just because I had some family stuff.

  But I went back the next day. Went back the next day really
• 5:36
  early. Got there at like 9:30 in the
• 5:38
  morning. Kenny Wallace Live, that show

  early. I like to get there super early

  anyway to beat the traffic, but there was a lot of NASCAR fans

  They start to bring out these tarps and all that and they're

  I'm thinking, are they going to smash watermelons?

  watermelon on me and my phone and all that as I'm shooting it.

  So this woman's like a bodybuilder and she was

  crushing, crushing watermelons with her thighs.

  So she sat down, I mean, and she's fit, very muscular though.

  And she, I think she crushed 3 watermelons with her thighs just

  like squeezing them and bursting the watermelons.

  So pretty crazy. So Briscoe, Ross, Chastain, and

  then you got Kyle Larson. And I'm kind of going around the

  back and I see Kyle Larson's waiting.

  I see Rusty Wallace is there. Rusty Wallace is having a chat

  with Kyle Larson. And then I see an actual goat,

  an actual live animal goat with the Kyle Larson, Hendrick

  Motorsports. I don't want to call it a fire

  suit. Whatever they put on them, a

  but weather was perfect. I did a walk of the grid and you

  guys can see that video on YouTube as well and I speed it

  up. I I walked past every car with

  my phone and just showed a a nice picture of it.

  It took like 5 minutes. So I speed it up to about two

  minutes so that people would kind of want to watch it more

  with little music. There were some really good

  looking cars, some really good looking cars.

  perception of races from watching on TV versus being

  there. And I always like to site the

  democratic way for fans to tell you if they liked the race or

  not. So right now, was Gateway a good

  race? So right now the numbers are

  yes, 58%, No 42. So definitely above 50%.

  Not overwhelmingly positive, but definitely above 50%.

  Was it a good race? And, and here's what I'll say.

  I think you have to separate the race and the show.

  You know, this is an event. What I think Saint Louis does

  really well is creating the show around the race, and we'll get

  to the race also. But the pyrotechnics, amazing.

  The Confluence Music Festival, you had Lil Jon, you had is it

  all kinds of local cover bands. The whole weekend was music.

  It was entertainment. And here's what I'm trying to

  say when I, when I think about is a race good 3637 times,

  whatever it is per year, I'm basing that on watching on TV.

  And then I go to the Saint Louis race every year.

  So that's my one time to to watch the race in person.

  And I really think you evaluate and engage races totally
• 16:22
  differently, obviously if you're there versus on TV.
• 16:25
  And so again, that 58% good, not great.

  I can understand why, why people, if you're saying, Oh,
• 16:32
  you, you couldn't pass, that's also a next Gen. car problem.

  That that's a next Gen. car problem.

  Let's let's be honest about that.

  What I'm trying to say is like when you're at the venue, you're
• 16:43
  so caught up in the sights, the sounds, the energy, the
• 16:49
  atmosphere, that even though almost every, every Sunday I try

  to to gauge a race. Is it racy?

  Could you pass? Is it entertaining?

  You don't really think about that as much when you're at the
• 17:04
  race. You're you're so kind of just
• 17:06
  engulfed with the sights, sounds, smells.

  It's just a totally different perspective.

  So I thought it was a fantastic experience for me.

  Now, somebody watching on TV, do they have a different opinion?

  That's fine. There's probably been races
• 17:21
  where I watch them on TV this year and I'm like, that race was
• 17:25
  kind of boring. But I'm sure there are people
• 17:27
  that were there that were like, no, dude, this was freaking
• 17:29
  awesome. You weren't there.

  Perfect weather, great entertainment, got around
• 17:34
  concessions. It was all good.

  It was a great experience. So that's what I'm trying to

  say. We have problems with the Next

  Gen. car. I think most people, most people

  agree with that. Hopefully they do more to solve
• 17:46
  it in the offseason. But I thought Saint Louis showed

  out really, really well during the race.

  We joked about this this morning on Herman Trader.

  I thought they had just the the right amount of wrecks.

  You don't want it to be just a wreck fest.

  You want a couple here and there.

  You had some big name Rex. You had Chase Elliott, who

  turned Josh Berry, ruined his day.

  Josh Berry has had a terrible start to the playoffs, obviously

  wrecking out early. I think he wrecked on lap 35 if

  I'm not mistaken, wrecked out early at Darlington and Saint
• 18:18
  Louis now. So he's going to have to win

  obviously Bristol to advance. You had Daniel Suarez wrecked
• 18:25
  out early. He was around I think lap 6070,
• 18:27
  whatever it was. I mean, you had big names going
• 18:30
  at it. You had Kyle Larson, who made
• 18:32
  contact with Denny, not Denny Hamlin with Ryan Blaney.

  Ryan Blaney spins. He's able to correct it.

  Ryan Blaney comes back and gets what I think he finished fourth.

  So he had a chat with with Kyle Larson after the race.

  Not happy with the way Larson was driving him, but also the

  fact that Ryan Blaney was able to come back and get a good,

  good finish. Yeah, Ryan Blaney was fourth.

  Chase Elliott was third in this race.

  How about Chase Briscoe? Chase Briscoe Runner up after

  winning Darlington and this was Toyota dominance.

  Hamlin, Briscoe, Nemechek Sea Bell Sea Bell was not happy at

  the end of the race. He thought he had the best car,

  finished seventh, thought he could do better.

  Bubble Walls 8th, He won a stage and Ty Gibbs 10th.

  So you had some wrecks. Denny Hamlin wins.

  You don't have a a photo finish, but Denny Hamlin has been

  running really, really good. I feel like this is Denny's

  year. I know people have said that

  before in the playoffs. He's never been able to get it

  done at the end at Phoenix. But also, Toyota's running so

  well. I know Penske has the set up at

  Phoenix, but man, the way Toyota's are running right now,

  don't you think a Toyota probably needs to be the

  favorite, whether it's Denny, whether it's Chase Briscoe.
