- 0:38Welcome. I am so excited to have you here, embarking with me on
- 0:45this journey to your authentic, inspiring voice. This is just
- 0:51the first step of something truly incredible that we are
- 0:55going to experience together. And I am so glad that you are
- 0:59here before I get too excited, before I get ahead of myself,
- 1:03let me introduce myself properly. My name is Danielle
- 1:07Benson. I run the inspired speaker Academy, and I guide
- 1:11speakers of every experience level who are aspiring and
- 1:17inspiring. They want to get their message out there. I guide
- 1:20them to fall wildly in love with speaking on stage and on camera,
- 1:28because this is an important medium, and not a lot of us are
- 1:32doing it in a way that is authentic and that is connected,
- 1:35and to be frank, that is easier and more free. A lot of us are
- 1:40over complicating it. We're getting scared. We're leeching
- 1:45the life out of it. And that is not the way it's meant to be.
- 1:49It's supposed to be easy, it's supposed to be fun and free and
- 1:52flexible and genuine and authentic and connected. And
- 1:56that is why I am here to help you to discover that now, if you
- 2:01are listening to me and you're thinking, yeah, sure, that's
- 2:04fine, it's easy for you to say you're obviously good at this. I
- 2:09personally am not sure how I feel about that last little bit
- 2:13I'm working on it. I feel like we are all works in progress.
- 2:18But if you do look at me and think there's no way I could get
- 2:21there. Let me tell you, it has not been an easy ride. It has
- 2:26taken me an extremely long time to get to be as good as I am,
- 2:31and I am not where I want to be, but even so, I acknowledge, you
- 2:37know, we all, we're all somewhere on our journey, and I
- 2:40have things that I can share to help you get from wherever you
- 2:42are to better and on your way, and hopefully even surpass me in
- 2:49your speaking prowess. Because this is all just technique. This
- 2:54is the magic about the way that I have approached speaking, the
- 2:58way that I learned it, and the way that I'm going to share with
- 3:01you over this this podcast, is that it's it's technique, it's
- 3:06repeatable, and you do it you do it again, you do it again, and
- 3:10you improve. It's a skill. The same way that playing a piano is
- 3:14a skill. Some people are born more talented than others, sure,
- 3:19but without technique, you will never become a concert pianist
- 3:23without practicing, without technique, without learning. You
- 3:26may have an inherent skill there. There may be, you know,
- 3:29you maybe have a step up over other folks, but you still have
- 3:34to do the work. Technique is what allows us to trust
- 3:39ourselves, to feel safe to understand this art. That when I
- 3:43began this journey, I was so disconnected from myself. I was
- 3:48terrified. I had this voice that I hated. I was so scared of
- 3:54being humiliated, of saying the wrong thing, of people judging
- 3:57me. I was really scared of doing this, and I failed a lot, but as
- 4:04well as this big fear, I had this big fire inside of me, and
- 4:08it would not be ignored. And so I persisted, and eventually I
- 4:13figured it out, but it took me a while, because I didn't even
- 4:16realize that I could change certain things, like my voice,
- 4:21like the sound of my voice, I didn't realize I had power over
- 4:25that. I didn't realize that I could never mind how no one was
- 4:31there to teach me. I was learning breathing techniques, I
- 4:34was learning elocution, but I wasn't learning how to connect
- 4:38to myself. My stage fright had me so neurotic, and in my head,
- 4:45I was so disconnected. It took me a long time, but eventually I
- 4:51found someone who could teach me practices, breathing practices,
- 4:56grounding practices to get into my body. Not just to work on my
- 5:01body, but to inhabit it, to use it, to drive it from the inside,
- 5:07so that I could use my body as an expression tool, so that I
- 5:11could live in it. And by learning these techniques and
- 5:15going through these exercises, it was a very physical practice,
- 5:20but by doing that, I learned how to come home to my voice. I
- 5:25changed my relationship with my voice. You know, so many people
- 5:29think that their voice is like their height. It is what it is,
- 5:35but your voice is more like your posture. You have the body you
- 5:39have, but it's what you do with it that shapes it. And so I
- 5:44learned what I was doing and what I wasn't doing, which
- 5:47muscles were overworking, which ones weren't working, enough,
- 5:51how I could connect to myself so that it was me that I could
- 5:56hear, because that sound of my voice that I didn't like that I
- 6:00heard. It wasn't me that I didn't like it was what I was
- 6:05doing. It was the posture of my voice. If you think about it,
- 6:09it's lots of little daily habits that create the way we stand,
- 6:14the way we sit, the way we walk. So if you do the same thing over
- 6:20and over, but it's bad for you. You will eventually maybe, if
- 6:24you're constantly leaning over a computer, for example, you may
- 6:28eventually develop a stooped posture. But if you find a
- 6:32physio early enough and they give you some exercises, you can
- 6:35change that. You can even undo a lot of the damage that you've
- 6:39done. And the same is true for your voice. It's habit, habit
- 6:44that has become so normal that it feels like you can't change
- 6:50it, but you can. You can through small daily habits, through
- 6:57practices, through learning and understanding how it works. So
- 7:00this was huge for me. And as I was doing these exercises, as I
- 7:05was building this relationship with my voice, I felt that my
- 7:10voice was changing like the sound changed. Just because I
- 7:14was doing these, these physical exercises, my tone changed and
- 7:19my attitude changed, and I realized that those things that
- 7:22I was listening to, they were my judgments. They were the
- 7:26defensiveness I had, the despair I was in. That's what I was
- 7:30hearing, that I was reacting to. And as that melted away, and I
- 7:35became to enjoy this relationship with my body and my
- 7:38voice, I began to hear that in my voice. I love the sound of my
- 7:42voice. Now it feels good. It should feel good. We don't
- 7:49really address self love in speaking training, but I feel
- 7:53like we should, because it's a huge part of what's going on. If
- 7:57you are a speaker, you are standing up there, and you are
- 8:00sharing your essence, you are exposed, you are speaking about
- 8:05your passions. You're standing for something. And if you don't
- 8:08feel confident, if you don't love what you're talking about,
- 8:14and you don't feel at least some type of love or acceptance for
- 8:18yourself, it's going to create a barrier. Those insecurities are
- 8:23going to create a barrier between you and your audience,
- 8:26and all they're going to see is the insecurity, because that is
- 8:27a it's like a mask that we wear, and it covers everything else we
- 8:33have to get rid of that we there's so much we need to undo
- 8:36all those defense mechanisms and those insecurities so that we
- 8:39can be seen for who we are, and it's only then that we can stand
- 8:46in our truth and be heard, because speaking takes courage.
- 8:53And then what's cool about that is I learned that by being
- 8:59authentic, by being transparent, by being humble and earnest and
- 9:04honest about where I was, letting myself feel the fear,
- 9:09letting myself feel everything
- 9:13I didn't have anything to be scared of anymore, because when
- 9:18you are being totally transparent and standing In your
- 9:22truth, no one can hurt you. They can hurt you when you're
- 9:27pretending, when you're pretending to be more confident
- 9:32than you are, when you're pretending to know more than you
- 9:37do, when you're pretending to be more together than you are.
- 9:42That's when people can hurt you, because they can see the chinks
- 9:47in your armor, and they can poke and they can say, oh, but that's
- 9:53not true. And oh, but that's not true. This is where imposter
- 9:58syndrome comes from. By trying to inhabit something that we
- 10:03don't feel and reality might be something different, like maybe
- 10:08you really do know what you're talking about, but you don't
- 10:13feel it. If we don't bring those feelings with us, that imposter
- 10:19syndrome is just going to get bigger, which is why embodiment
- 10:24is so important instead. Standing in your truth is
- 10:28everything, because then you are safe again. You know your truth,
- 10:34and everyone can see it, and it feels vulnerable and it feels
- 10:39exposing, but it is also so strong and so courageous, and I
- 10:44learned too, that by stepping into that courage, I wasn't
- 10:49waiting for confidence to come along. Competence is a side
- 10:54effect. It comes later. Confidence is the reward you get
- 10:58after doing the hard work. You have to prove your competence.
- 11:03You have to stand up and be courageous. Courage over
- 11:08confidence. Courage comes first. Confidence is your reward. You
- 11:13don't need your reward first. You need to find your engine.
- 11:18What drives you? What is your passion? Is it longing? Is it is
- 11:23it anger? Is it frustration? Is it love? What is it that makes
- 11:29you go? I want to speak. I have something to say. When you can
- 11:34find that you can tap into that, all this kind of self
- 11:39insecurity, self image stuff doesn't become it falls away. It
- 11:44doesn't it's not important anymore, and you can stand at
- 11:48who you are. It's a beautiful thing. That's what we need right
- 11:54now. Your voice doesn't need to be beautiful. You don't need to
- 11:59be perfect. You need to be expressive. You need to be
- 12:03transparent and flexible and fun and fragile and agile, all these
- 12:09things we need more human communication. A perfect voice
- 12:14is not useful. A transparent voice, one that shows what's
- 12:19going on, one that connects on a human level. That's what
- 12:23technique is for. Is to help you find that agility, that vocal
- 12:29variety, if you will, that energy to connect with other
- 12:33people. Because now is not the time to be quiet. Now is the
- 12:38time to speak your truth. It is your time to be loud, not to
- 12:43shout, but to be fierce in your compassion and your courage and
- 12:49your message. Now is the time for you to speak more than ever,
- 12:54we need people who are aligned with who they are, who are
- 12:59compassionate, who are human, who are loving and empathetic,
- 13:04who have a message and have something to say. So I'm so glad
- 13:09that you're here. I am over joyed that you are here. We are
- 13:14going to have so much fun. I'm going to share everything that I
- 13:19can with you about speaking techniques, how to look after
- 13:24your voice, how to have fun with it, how to throw your script
- 13:29away, rip it up and use it as confetti to celebrate this new
- 13:34way of speaking that is free, that is fun, that is flexible
- 13:39and human and connected, because that is what the world needs
- 13:44right now. So I hope for you today, find some time to connect
- 13:50to your fire. What is your engine? What makes you want to
- 13:54get out there and speak, connect to that today, and I'll see you
- 14:00in the next episode.
