- Scott Hayes: Welcome back to Sober Readings, everyone. My name is Scott. Today is June 5th, it's Friday. Let's begin today's episode with the Serenity Prayer. God, grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Today's reading from Daily Reflections, June 5. Entirely ready? This is the step that separates the men from the boys. The difference between the boys and the men is the difference between striving for a self-determined objective and for the perfect objective which is of God. It is suggested that we ought to become entirely willing to aim toward perfection. The moment we say no never, our minds close against the grace of God. This is the exact point at which we abandon limited objectives. And move toward God's will for us. That's from the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, Pages sixty three, sixty eight, and sixty nine. Am I entirely ready to have God remove these defects of character? Do I know at long last that I cannot save myself? I have come to believe that I cannot. If I am unable, if my best intentions go wrong, if my desires are selfishly motivated, and if my knowledge and will are limited, then I am ready to embrace God's will for my life. Today's reading from twenty four hours, june five, AA thought for the day. We alcoholics are fortunate to be living in a day and age when there is such a thing as Alcoholics Anonymous. Before AA came into being, there was very little hope for the alcoholic. AA is a great rebuilder of human wreckage. It takes a man or a woman whose personality problem expresses itself in alcoholism and offers them a program which, if they are willing to accept it, allows them not only to get sober. But to find a much better way of living. So ask yourself, have I found a better way of living? The Meditation for the Day. Very quietly God speaks through your thoughts and feelings. Heed the divine voice of your conscience. Listen for this, and you will never be disappointed in the results in your life. Listen for this small still voice, and your tired nerves will become rested. The divine voice comes to you as strength as well as tenderness, as power as well as restfulness. Man's moral strength is Derives its effectiveness from the power that comes when we listen patiently for the still small voice. In today's prayer for the day, I pray that I may listen for the still small voice of God. I pray that I may obey the leading of my conscience. And for today's final reading, we're gonna read from as Bill sees it, we're gonna read from page two hundred nine two today. Toward partnership. When the distortion of family life through alcohol has been great, a long period of patient striving may be necessary. After the husband joins AA, the wife may become discontented, even highly resentful that AA has done the very thing that all her years of devotion had failed to do. Her husband may become so wrapped up in AA and his new friends that he is inconsiderately away from home more than when he drank. Each then Blames the other. But eventually, the alcoholic, now fully understanding how much he did to hurt his wife and children, nearly always takes up his marriage responsibilities with the willingness to repair what he can and accept what he can't. He persistently tries all of AA's twelve steps in his home, often with fine results. He firmly but lovingly commences to behave like a partner instead of a bad boy. And that's from the 12 and 12, pages 118 to 119. And that's it for today's episode of Sober Readings.
