- 0:14Speaker 1: do it. Welcome to jip Hop Now. Potts. If you're
- 0:23Speaker 1: from the future, you know what to do. Get your
- 0:25Speaker 1: ass out of my past life. Don't disrespect the leg
- 0:30Speaker 1: like hip hop is say this today. Let's get rightful
- 0:35Speaker 1: to the business whatever, y'all. I am your host Vegas
- 0:38Speaker 1: and this hip Hop Now podcast a podcast specifically designed
- 0:44Speaker 1: to keep you caught up on all things hip hop,
- 0:47Speaker 1: music and culture that happened throughout the week, but in
- 0:51Speaker 1: this case, that happened throughout the year. First of all,
- 0:55Speaker 1: Happy holidays to everybody listening on audio form and everybody
- 1:00Speaker 1: watching right now on YouTube. This is the annual show.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We started a tradition last year. You know. Last year
- 1:11Speaker 1: I was in the dungeons of hip hop A gave
- 1:13Speaker 1: my garage with a hoodie and a du rag on
- 1:18Speaker 1: bringing in the holiday cheer. Today. I then came up
- 1:22Speaker 1: in the world, as you can see if you're watching
- 1:25Speaker 1: on YouTube and all of that. But you know, a
- 1:28Speaker 1: little festive for the people who are watching. But this
- 1:32Speaker 1: is the end of the year, final episode for twenty
- 1:37Speaker 1: twenty four maybe where I break down what I think
- 1:45Speaker 1: are some of the best albums of the year. Albums, mixtapes, projects,
- 1:53Speaker 1: you know, because people release EPs, mixtapes, albums, I incorporate
- 1:57Speaker 1: all of them into that. First and foremost. The YouTube
- 2:02Speaker 1: channel man has been a blessing this year, trying to
- 2:05Speaker 1: get to five hundred and now trying to get to
- 2:07Speaker 1: a thousand. Right now, we are at eight hundred subscribers
- 2:11Speaker 1: on YouTube, which is great. So whether you found this
- 2:14Speaker 1: podcast through the shorts I post on YouTube or the
- 2:18Speaker 1: other content or the interview I did not too long ago,
- 2:22Speaker 1: which maybe there'll be some more who knows, maybe maybe not.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Who knows who could take you. But at the end
- 2:29Speaker 1: of the day, you know, I appreciate everybody who has
- 2:31Speaker 1: come through checked out the podcast. Definitely people who have
- 2:35Speaker 1: shared the podcast, who supported the podcast, Patreon supporters, shout
- 2:40Speaker 1: out to you, those who are going to come through
- 2:43Speaker 1: on cash app. All of that stuff goes to the
- 2:45Speaker 1: production of the podcast. Let's just be rare, you know
- 2:48Speaker 1: what I'm saying, That's where it should go for the
- 2:51Speaker 1: most part, and most content creators do that. You know
- 2:54Speaker 1: what I'm saying, and what you have to do As
- 2:56Speaker 1: a content creator, you have to create content that people like.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, So that's what we do
- 3:01Speaker 1: here at Hip Hop Now Podcast. Also know there's a
- 3:07Speaker 1: very special episode coming up on Christmas Eve, exclusively on YouTube,
- 3:14Speaker 1: so stay tuned for that. It's already on the channel
- 3:18Speaker 1: where you can go ahead and hit that notification button
- 3:22Speaker 1: or bell or whatever to be notified when it goes live.
- 3:26Speaker 1: But you should do that in general. So when you
- 3:28Speaker 1: know there's new content right here on the channel, you know,
- 3:32Speaker 1: you get a little notification through YouTube on your phone
- 3:36Speaker 1: or email or have a way you have it set up.
- 3:39Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, to stay locked in. Now
- 3:43Speaker 1: let's get right into the business. So if you are
- 3:49Speaker 1: new here, first of all, welcome, but also know when
- 3:52Speaker 1: it comes to my best of the year, I listen
- 3:56Speaker 1: to a number of albums, Like it's so many albums
- 4:00Speaker 1: that I listened to a lot of it is based
- 4:02Speaker 1: off of things I'm looking forward to, plus things that
- 4:07Speaker 1: you know, I've seen a lot of buzz on social
- 4:09Speaker 1: media and hip hop media in general, so I try
- 4:14Speaker 1: to check out everything and obviously I don't get a
- 4:17Speaker 1: chance to listen to everything, but for me, those are
- 4:22Speaker 1: the key factors what I'm checking for and what the
- 4:25Speaker 1: people checking for in general. You know what I'm saying.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So if you don't see, you know, some of your
- 4:33Speaker 1: favorites here, it doesn't mean that I didn't hear. It
- 4:35Speaker 1: doesn't mean that it ain't dope. It just means that
- 4:39Speaker 1: it didn't make my list because there are so many
- 4:43Speaker 1: albums in twenty twenty four that dropped where it became
- 4:47Speaker 1: difficult towards the end to like like follow it down, like, yo,
- 4:52Speaker 1: what's is this better than this? Is it better than that?
- 4:56Speaker 1: So what I typically do to get it down to
- 5:00Speaker 1: at least fifteen albums, ten being albums I think are
- 5:05Speaker 1: good that you should check out, and then my top five,
- 5:09Speaker 1: and to get it down to those fifteen, they just
- 5:13Speaker 1: have to be special in some way to me in
- 5:16Speaker 1: my opinion, you know what I'm saying, And a lot
- 5:18Speaker 1: of that has to do with It could be traditional
- 5:22Speaker 1: beats and bars and maybe you just had the best
- 5:25Speaker 1: beats and bars album of the year. Or it could
- 5:28Speaker 1: be incredibly creative albums where I'm like, man, this is
- 5:34Speaker 1: just so dope. I love the theme behind this. It
- 5:37Speaker 1: could be something new, somebody's doing something new, in hip hop,
- 5:42Speaker 1: and that's why I dug it. And it could just
- 5:45Speaker 1: be in general incredible music, not just YO, where them
- 5:49Speaker 1: bars at. If it ain't got them bars, it ain't
- 5:52Speaker 1: in there. Nah. Honestly, my list is varied because that's
- 5:57Speaker 1: what my listening style is. So even though I may
- 5:59Speaker 1: check out everybody just to see who's dope or not,
- 6:03Speaker 1: my list really reflects my taste, right, like what well
- 6:08Speaker 1: the variety in my taste, as you say, So, we're
- 6:13Speaker 1: going to do something a little bit different and maybe
- 6:15Speaker 1: this could be a part of the tradition because we're
- 6:19Speaker 1: going to add a honorable mention didn't make the fifteen,
- 6:25Speaker 1: but had it, it probably would have placed top five.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And that honorable mention is stove God Cooks. Stop calling
- 6:36Speaker 1: me I'm cooking, okay. This was an album that Stove
- 6:42Speaker 1: God or kind of like an EP. It's kind of short,
- 6:46Speaker 1: but a project that was released by stove God Cooks
- 6:49Speaker 1: through the site even dot com. And the only reason
- 6:55Speaker 1: because it was it was a planet in my top five.
- 6:57Speaker 1: The only reason why I didn't include it is because
- 7:00Speaker 1: it's not really available anymore. It's not available on streaming
- 7:04Speaker 1: services as of this recording right it's not available on
- 7:08Speaker 1: the site where I got it from, you know what
- 7:11Speaker 1: I'm saying, even dot com, and it's due to some
- 7:14Speaker 1: copyright issues. So it's not an album I could recommend
- 7:19Speaker 1: to you and you go, oh word, it was that crazy.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Let me go on download there or let me go
- 7:23Speaker 1: stream it right now as of this recording, you can't
- 7:27Speaker 1: do either. But just to let y'all know, I had
- 7:31Speaker 1: been lukewarm on Stovegude singles. Right, I might like a
- 7:35Speaker 1: joint here, may not really feel a joint there. His
- 7:40Speaker 1: features sometimes were hit of mess, sometimes they were great.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Sometimes they were just kind of like or frustrating because
- 7:46Speaker 1: he didn't have a project AUP. That's why I was frustrating.
- 7:51Speaker 1: But when I got my hands on this joint is
- 7:55Speaker 1: stop calling me. I'm cooking side A, so maybe there'll
- 7:58Speaker 1: be a SIDEB. When I heard it, I was like, man,
- 8:01Speaker 1: this feels like what we were waiting for. This feels
- 8:04Speaker 1: like reasonable droughts successor in some kind of ways. And
- 8:10Speaker 1: I don't know if people will ever get to hear it,
- 8:12Speaker 1: to be honest. So that's my honorable mention of twenty
- 8:16Speaker 1: twenty four. Let's get into the top ten best albums
- 8:22Speaker 1: of twenty twenty four. Before before I get into you know,
- 8:26Speaker 1: the cream of the quat top five, we're gonna run
- 8:30Speaker 1: through these. We're gonna talk too much about them, but
- 8:33Speaker 1: starting off at the top, Davies and scram Jones for
- 8:37Speaker 1: the Love, not the Dav's albums that you're used to.
- 8:41Speaker 1: In a lot of ways, I think it's better because
- 8:44Speaker 1: he's doing something different. They did an excellent job with
- 8:48Speaker 1: the music and the nineties Pheel Martin Living Single, Like
- 8:53Speaker 1: it's all these things and it's not just nineties, but
- 8:56Speaker 1: you know, there's some beats from you know, love records
- 8:59Speaker 1: from back in like TD. You know jerryd. Bad. I
- 9:02Speaker 1: know his name is Jeffrey, but you remember Kings of Comedy.
- 9:05Speaker 1: That's that's how I said it. That's how Cedric said it.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Next up hus Kingpin and ninth one to Super golt Man.
- 9:12Speaker 1: When I tell y'all, this was in my top five
- 9:15Speaker 1: for like the majority of the year because I was
- 9:18Speaker 1: just listening to it over and over again. Tyler the
- 9:22Speaker 1: Creator Chromacopia was chilling in my top five for a
- 9:28Speaker 1: little bit. I tapered off with my listening, but a
- 9:31Speaker 1: very dope album from Tyler the creator. If you like
- 9:34Speaker 1: his music, if you like a variety in your hip hop.
- 9:37Speaker 1: It's not straightforward, but I thought it was pretty dope.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I am DoD and Clip. Though Bloodstained swayed Part two.
- 9:48Speaker 1: They did a part one obviously, and then they did
- 9:51Speaker 1: a more like a bonus joint. But Part two was
- 9:56Speaker 1: my favorite because there was damn there and no skips
- 10:00Speaker 1: and it was incredible barwork as usual for Miam God
- 10:05Speaker 1: Benny the Butcher Everybody Can't Go. That's crazy because I
- 10:11Speaker 1: was kind of disappointed when this came out, but then
- 10:14Speaker 1: later I found myself listening and listening and listening and
- 10:18Speaker 1: listening over and over again. Then he dropped another project,
- 10:21Speaker 1: Summertime Butch, and even though it was cool, I still
- 10:25Speaker 1: was more on the side of what I liked with
- 10:28Speaker 1: Everybody Can't Go. And then he dropped the album with
- 10:32Speaker 1: thirty eight Specch Stabbed and Shot Part two, and even
- 10:36Speaker 1: with that, I felt like thirty especially was better than
- 10:40Speaker 1: Benny on it as far as the bars respectfully. But
- 10:44Speaker 1: Everybody Can't Go. I just kept running it back, especially
- 10:47Speaker 1: during the summer. You know that Bronze joint was crazy.
- 10:50Speaker 1: It was a couple of joints on it. So Loop
- 10:53Speaker 1: A Fiasco Samurai. Man, this is the loope. I like,
- 10:59Speaker 1: this is the pocket, This is the types of beats,
- 11:03Speaker 1: this is types of hooks. This album just feels good.
- 11:07Speaker 1: It feels good, and I'm I'm a food and liquor
- 11:11Speaker 1: fan the first one and the second one kind of
- 11:14Speaker 1: sort of but I like that Loop A. You know,
- 11:17Speaker 1: you don't have to go all the way with the
- 11:18Speaker 1: commercial ride and stuff like that, because I like the
- 11:21Speaker 1: cool as well, and there's a lot of that looping in.
- 11:25Speaker 1: But I felt like this was a well rounded project
- 11:27Speaker 1: from Loop a Fiasco, Freeway and Jake won Stimulus Package two. Man,
- 11:37Speaker 1: they did it again. Stimulus Package whenever drop it, can't
- 11:41Speaker 1: remember maybe twenty sixteen, something like that was definitely probably
- 11:46Speaker 1: in my best of the year when it dropped. I
- 11:49Speaker 1: remember when they announced it, We're going to drop a
- 11:51Speaker 1: stimulus package too. I was like, can they do it again?
- 11:54Speaker 1: After all this time? They did it again. Don't sleep
- 11:57Speaker 1: on Freeway. He got a dope Like his mixtape Joint
- 12:01Speaker 1: is damnn flawless, So check that out. Blue in Exile
- 12:06Speaker 1: Love Theominous World. Blue dropped a lot of projects. This
- 12:11Speaker 1: is hands down my favorite out of what he dropped,
- 12:16Speaker 1: Blue and Exile cannot miss like when they get together
- 12:20Speaker 1: and make music. Now, don't kill me. But I'm just
- 12:26Speaker 1: talking about the chemistry. The chemistry is like Doctor Dreames Snoop.
- 12:31Speaker 1: The chemistry is like as in Premier. The chemistry is
- 12:36Speaker 1: like Pete rockins. I was gonna say Pete Rock and
- 12:40Speaker 1: see Us Move. No, not that one, Pete Rock and Common.
- 12:45Speaker 1: They just Blue and Exile just had this perfect combination
- 12:51Speaker 1: of beats and rhyms and it feels like they know
- 12:54Speaker 1: each other enough to make great music. So that was
- 12:57Speaker 1: another great album one that drop sky Zoo Keep Me Company.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Sky Zoo is he almost never missed when it comes
- 13:08Speaker 1: to his projects. Obviously he has projects I like more
- 13:11Speaker 1: than others. But this one is grown man music. Okay.
- 13:17Speaker 1: He got a song with Chuck D on the hook.
- 13:20Speaker 1: It's perfect, It's chef kiss, It's perfect usage of Chuck
- 13:25Speaker 1: D's voice, his rhyme style, it just works. And he
- 13:28Speaker 1: got this one song called record Store a Day that
- 13:31Speaker 1: I when I heard it, I was like, why hasn't
- 13:34Speaker 1: any other MC done this? Now I know you might
- 13:38Speaker 1: be saying, oh nah, you know what I'm saying. Lord God,
- 13:41Speaker 1: the Infamous did it back into nigga. I don't care.
- 13:46Speaker 1: This is hot. What sky Zoo did with this and
- 13:50Speaker 1: the album in general is like pretty dope, like if
- 13:53Speaker 1: you like what some people call adult contemporary hip hop,
- 13:59Speaker 1: not saying that you can't be younger and dig it,
- 14:01Speaker 1: it's just the vibe, right, The vibe is really chill,
- 14:05Speaker 1: but he's still nice with the bars as always, and
- 14:09Speaker 1: I feel like it's a nice, complete project. And lastly,
- 14:13Speaker 1: Freddy Gibbs Your Only Die Once. This album gets better
- 14:18Speaker 1: and better as I listen to it. I'm a big
- 14:21Speaker 1: Freddy Gibbs fan. I love the theme of it being
- 14:26Speaker 1: a sequel to Your Only Live Once, which was a
- 14:29Speaker 1: dope project, and it was more so on a good
- 14:32Speaker 1: side of things, you know, like when you got the
- 14:34Speaker 1: good Angel on your shoulder. Well, this album You Only
- 14:38Speaker 1: Die Once, it's like the Devil on the side and
- 14:40Speaker 1: the devil s gets some They're just hilarious and they
- 14:43Speaker 1: fit perfectly. And I like how Freddy Gibbs speaks to
- 14:47Speaker 1: a lot of what has occurred between albums, you know,
- 14:51Speaker 1: because he was catching some ls on social media, but
- 14:54Speaker 1: he ain't never stopped rapping dope, and this is a
- 14:57Speaker 1: very dope album. So there you have it. Those are
- 14:59Speaker 1: ten albums, as far as variety goes, that I think
- 15:04Speaker 1: you should check out because they're pretty dope. A lot
- 15:08Speaker 1: of those albums probably made a ton of people's top
- 15:11Speaker 1: five list. But now it's time to get into minds.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Here are my top five albums, projects, EPs, mixtapes, whatever
- 15:26Speaker 1: it may be, of twenty twenty four, starting at the
- 15:32Speaker 1: very top. And I'm gonna just say the West Coast
- 15:38Speaker 1: did their thing this year because I can't believe it.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Kendrick Lamar GNX right. Sure. I'm a Kendrick fan, and
- 15:46Speaker 1: for those who are keeping score, I'm also a Drake fan.
- 15:49Speaker 1: I don't know if I'm a fan anymore, not that fan,
- 15:52Speaker 1: but you know what I mean, mainly because it's like
- 15:55Speaker 1: I just want him to stop. The battle's over. He lost,
- 15:58Speaker 1: but coming off a historical battle in hip hop between
- 16:03Speaker 1: these two that far exceeded my expectations as far as output, songs,
- 16:09Speaker 1: the type around, a lot of these things, you know,
- 16:14Speaker 1: and the results if you were like hibernating from January
- 16:18Speaker 1: of twenty twenty four to now Kendrick one, let's just
- 16:22Speaker 1: not debate it. It happened. I don't care if you
- 16:25Speaker 1: don't like, not like us, or you don't like it anymore.
- 16:28Speaker 1: He wanted to battle. Okay, just go listen to meet
- 16:31Speaker 1: the grams. That did happen. Okay, but Kendrick surprise dropped
- 16:37Speaker 1: popped out if you will. With this album called GNX
- 16:42Speaker 1: Shout Out to the Homie AK. We did a review
- 16:45Speaker 1: and reaction video which did very well for my channel.
- 16:49Speaker 1: So check it out to this album and obviously a
- 16:53Speaker 1: lot of that was fresh for us because we had listened.
- 16:56Speaker 1: You know. I gave it my good three listens and
- 17:00Speaker 1: I like it a lot, and I like it even
- 17:02Speaker 1: more the more I listen to it. I probably have
- 17:04Speaker 1: two skips. I skip Peekaboo in GNX because they just
- 17:08Speaker 1: I don't know something about I don't really like. Sometimes
- 17:11Speaker 1: I let them rock depending on the move. But for
- 17:14Speaker 1: the most part, I like the other songs more than
- 17:18Speaker 1: those two. But in general, what I like about this
- 17:21Speaker 1: album is it's West Coast sound now, not West Coast nineties,
- 17:28Speaker 1: and I love Yay No. I love the West Coast
- 17:32Speaker 1: from the nineties, but it's West Coast now right, It's
- 17:35Speaker 1: California now, So it's a different style. It's different ron
- 17:41Speaker 1: patterns for Kendrick that you know, some may or may
- 17:45Speaker 1: not like you know what I'm saying, Old Kendrick is
- 17:47Speaker 1: on songs like the Hard Part six, that's the Kendrick
- 17:50Speaker 1: you know, right, But everything else like Squabble Up and
- 17:55Speaker 1: all that is more so like hey, now, like it's
- 17:59Speaker 1: more so La and you know Oakland and you know,
- 18:04Speaker 1: it's that whole vibe basically of people you know, like
- 18:11Speaker 1: YG who make music who kind of he kind of
- 18:14Speaker 1: makes music in that down in some ways, and a
- 18:17Speaker 1: lot of artists from the West Coast, dude. So what
- 18:21Speaker 1: I liked about it more than just that was that
- 18:24Speaker 1: I was getting into something that felt new to me
- 18:26Speaker 1: because I wasn't really checking for a lot of these cats.
- 18:30Speaker 1: And also, and I think not like us kind of
- 18:33Speaker 1: primmed us for an album like this, but from songs
- 18:37Speaker 1: like Squabble Up to reincarnated whacked out murals, you know
- 18:42Speaker 1: what I'm saying, The Hart Part six, Luther, Dodger, Blue,
- 18:47Speaker 1: even Gloria at the end of the album. It's just
- 18:50Speaker 1: an album that's packed full of flavor, West Coast culture,
- 18:56Speaker 1: easter eggs, shots fire at other rappers, you know, club vibe,
- 19:03Speaker 1: Radio Vibe, Cripwalk, vibe like all of it, and what
- 19:08Speaker 1: I like about the hard part six the most is
- 19:11Speaker 1: him telling that TDE Rise the Fame story because I
- 19:16Speaker 1: just like the way he laid it out, you know
- 19:18Speaker 1: what I'm saying, And I feel like it's a great
- 19:21Speaker 1: album as it relates to his descography. I can't say
- 19:25Speaker 1: I would add it to my top three because Kendrick
- 19:28Speaker 1: has a pretty flawless catalog, you know, in my opinion,
- 19:34Speaker 1: but we like some more than others, and I feel
- 19:38Speaker 1: like the three that I like the most, gn X
- 19:43Speaker 1: is probably right behind those. So there you have it.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Next stup out of the TDE camp doc Alligator Bites
- 19:53Speaker 1: never Heal. I'm not gonna lie y'all. When I first
- 19:57Speaker 1: hit play, like, first of all, I saw her on
- 20:00Speaker 1: on ig right and I forget what song it was,
- 20:04Speaker 1: but I was like, damn, who's this. She's kind of
- 20:07Speaker 1: she's kind of dope, but you know, you never know,
- 20:09Speaker 1: somebody drop a full project that might be the only
- 20:13Speaker 1: song that's good. So I listened, you know, the first time,
- 20:16Speaker 1: and when I reviewed it for my channel, like similar
- 20:21Speaker 1: to the Benny the Butcher thing, I was like, I
- 20:24Speaker 1: like it, but I feel like it tapers off at
- 20:26Speaker 1: the end a little bit. But I feel like I
- 20:28Speaker 1: was wasn't adjusted to a Dough She's style that much
- 20:33Speaker 1: because her she's similar to Kendrick, Like, she just does
- 20:36Speaker 1: a bunch of different things and her vocal range changes
- 20:40Speaker 1: while she's rhyming. It's some of it is a little
- 20:43Speaker 1: Nicki minajs as far as like how she changes her
- 20:46Speaker 1: voice and stuff like that. Nicki never really spit like this.
- 20:50Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Barbs or whatever, y'all, but she just didn't.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I mean, she Okay, let me give her this credit.
- 20:57Speaker 1: She did somewhat in the very beginning. But Dough she
- 21:02Speaker 1: is a little bit different. I think Do she is
- 21:04Speaker 1: what Nicki Minaj could be when it comes to the
- 21:08Speaker 1: full range of what she does that could be controversial.
- 21:13Speaker 1: I'm not saying she has better work. She really only
- 21:15Speaker 1: has one project out, so Nicki Minaj has done what
- 21:19Speaker 1: she's done. But I kind of feel like Dough she's
- 21:22Speaker 1: like an extension from that tree from a respectable standpoint,
- 21:26Speaker 1: and I feel like I'm more into what Do She's
- 21:29Speaker 1: doing on this album, and I like it because there's
- 21:32Speaker 1: some storytelling, there's some bars, there's a snarkiness about you know,
- 21:37Speaker 1: boom back and what people want. But she got records
- 21:41Speaker 1: where she can rap right, So it's a very dope project.
- 21:46Speaker 1: If you haven't heard of her, she just did a
- 21:47Speaker 1: Tiny Desk. You can check out the project. You can
- 21:50Speaker 1: watch the Tiny Desks and check out the album. But
- 21:53Speaker 1: I think it's one of the best of the year,
- 21:55Speaker 1: to be honest, because now I let it rock all
- 21:58Speaker 1: the way through and I'm like, damn, I didn't like
- 22:00Speaker 1: the first three times I listened, So not the whole project,
- 22:05Speaker 1: just a couple of songs towards to end. There's some
- 22:07Speaker 1: songs that do skip, but I think it's a complete
- 22:10Speaker 1: body of work. Next up on the West Coast The
- 22:15Speaker 1: dog Pound. We all we got. Man, if there's a
- 22:19Speaker 1: number one, just based off of how much I played
- 22:23Speaker 1: the album, it's this one. I did not expect it,
- 22:29Speaker 1: but it was. It was almost like West Coast defunk
- 22:35Speaker 1: reborn right, the chronic style, dog food, doggy style. It
- 22:40Speaker 1: was like that sound reborn for now and it's so
- 22:45Speaker 1: West Coast, but it's like West Coast old school. So
- 22:48Speaker 1: where Kendrick was a newer sound for the West Coast,
- 22:52Speaker 1: Dog Pound took it back to what we knew and
- 22:55Speaker 1: loved from the Death Row days. This album was on
- 23:00Speaker 1: for records. If you didn't know, Snoop owns it now.
- 23:03Speaker 1: And when I tell y'all, man like song after song,
- 23:07Speaker 1: especially during the summer. You know it's sunny, you got
- 23:09Speaker 1: your little T shirt on, you got the little sun roof.
- 23:11Speaker 1: I don't. I can't drop the top. I know I
- 23:14Speaker 1: look like I could drop tap if you're watch it
- 23:16Speaker 1: on YouTube, but no, we got a regular car with
- 23:19Speaker 1: regular folks. Okay, But I just remember playing this album
- 23:24Speaker 1: over and over and over again. Snoop did an excellent job.
- 23:29Speaker 1: I think he's executive producer of this album, just making
- 23:33Speaker 1: sure that they kept the sound, the sound they got
- 23:37Speaker 1: famous offa And there's so many songs, and at the
- 23:42Speaker 1: end there's a DJ Premier song where they just wild
- 23:47Speaker 1: out and it's all the Death Row artists. Lady of Rage,
- 23:52Speaker 1: hands down has the best verse. It's it's for some people.
- 23:56Speaker 1: It may take you out of that whole West Coast
- 23:59Speaker 1: gun sound, but I think that song was supposed to
- 24:03Speaker 1: be like Stranded on Death Row off the Chronic Even
- 24:08Speaker 1: though Doctor dre produced it, it was a very East
- 24:11Speaker 1: Coast sounding beat. It's just that Doctor dre did it.
- 24:15Speaker 1: So it was like, oh whatever, so this song premier
- 24:18Speaker 1: does it. But I think it fits because it's the
- 24:22Speaker 1: end of the album. You know what I'm saying. You've
- 24:24Speaker 1: already got your West Coast field, so very dope album
- 24:28Speaker 1: next up? Now this one, This one will probably be
- 24:33Speaker 1: in everybody's top five, top ten. Nominated for a Grammy.
- 24:40Speaker 1: You know them, you love them? Common and Pete Rock
- 24:44Speaker 1: the Auditorium Volume one I'm not gonna hold you'all. When
- 24:49Speaker 1: they were releasing singles, specially Wise Up and Dreaming, I
- 24:54Speaker 1: was like, this album can't be whack. It's impossible. If
- 24:59Speaker 1: this is the feeling, this is what it is, and
- 25:03Speaker 1: this is you know, this sound is the shot for
- 25:06Speaker 1: the East Coast. We got one, okay, even though comment
- 25:10Speaker 1: from Midwest, but he got p Roight, p Roight from
- 25:12Speaker 1: Mount Vernon, you know what I'm saying. And I just
- 25:16Speaker 1: remember when the album came out, and I'm not gonna
- 25:18Speaker 1: old y'all. Right. Sometimes Common annoys me, and not so
- 25:22Speaker 1: much the rapper Common, but I'm talking about like the
- 25:27Speaker 1: voiceover artists, and sometimes the actor is sometimes he can
- 25:31Speaker 1: really annoy me. So when he started with the Nostellar
- 25:34Speaker 1: regions of the soul, Like, Nick, what are you talking about? Like,
- 25:37Speaker 1: just shut up and start. But I don't care. It
- 25:42Speaker 1: works because this album from track one all the way
- 25:47Speaker 1: to the end, this don't have no skips, no skips
- 25:50Speaker 1: to me, this is an album that not right now
- 25:54Speaker 1: because I know y'all fast, right now we'll be calling classic.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Why not? Why not? This was so dope? Why not
- 26:07Speaker 1: no skips? That's how I feel. No skips on this project.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Possa News shows up at you know, Rat Roman on
- 26:15Speaker 1: this joint, and it is fitting. You know what I'm saying.
- 26:18Speaker 1: It's just a very dope album and I'm glad to
- 26:20Speaker 1: see Pete Rock get is just due for still producing
- 26:25Speaker 1: dope beats today. And what I liked about what Pete
- 26:28Speaker 1: Rock was doing was Common, and Pete Rock said well
- 26:33Speaker 1: started with Common. Common said that he was like during
- 26:37Speaker 1: the lockdown, he was just listening to a lot of
- 26:40Speaker 1: old school hip hop, like exclusively like nineties and really
- 26:44Speaker 1: feeling charged by you know, hip hop's history and in
- 26:49Speaker 1: particular a specific time where the beats were a certain
- 26:53Speaker 1: way for the East Coast and the ROMs and the
- 26:56Speaker 1: bars were a certain way. And I kind of feel
- 26:59Speaker 1: like what Pete Rock was able to do was to
- 27:03Speaker 1: capture that feeling like a song like wise Up feels
- 27:08Speaker 1: like it sounds like, oh, they just sampled the bridges
- 27:11Speaker 1: over mc shann and Molly mah. But no, it's like
- 27:16Speaker 1: it's that, but it's flipped, you know what I'm saying.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Like it's a very dope song, just like most of
- 27:22Speaker 1: the songs on this album. And you know, sometimes you
- 27:26Speaker 1: can have albums that have familiar samples and they could
- 27:29Speaker 1: just feel like, oh, you just retreading you know, roads
- 27:32Speaker 1: that rappers have already rappers and producers have already crossed.
- 27:37Speaker 1: But in this instance, Pete Rock did so much with
- 27:41Speaker 1: the production to freshen up some classic sounds and samples
- 27:46Speaker 1: and stuff like that using hip hop that it sounds
- 27:49Speaker 1: brand new. It sounds fresh, and that's why it's you know,
- 27:53Speaker 1: in my top five of the year, ran it back
- 27:56Speaker 1: so many times it was, you know, because it was
- 27:58Speaker 1: just so dope. It felt I felt proud to be
- 28:03Speaker 1: a hip hop participant, all right. In my last out
- 28:09Speaker 1: of my top five twenty twenty four Hot off the Presses,
- 28:15Speaker 1: I probably listened to it about six or seven times,
- 28:18Speaker 1: which is crazy. Already as of this recording, probably more. Now,
- 28:23Speaker 1: if you're in the future, get you asked, how the
- 28:24Speaker 1: man you already know, you already got whatever else is new.
- 28:28Speaker 1: But that's Snoop Dogg and Doctor Dre's Missionary, Missionary being
- 28:33Speaker 1: a title that follows up Doggie Style where Doggie Style
- 28:39Speaker 1: is like considered grimy and you know, a certain sound
- 28:43Speaker 1: from the nineties G funk era and all that good stuff.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Missionary is where they are now. I'm just going to
- 28:50Speaker 1: service you, young lady, like that's what they're saying. I
- 28:53Speaker 1: guess I'm paraphrased. I don't know, but I took it
- 28:57Speaker 1: that Missionary was going to be different as a result,
- 29:01Speaker 1: and when I press play, it's very different and it's
- 29:06Speaker 1: very dope. Now, I will say there are songs that
- 29:11Speaker 1: I'm kind of like, I might skip that, I might
- 29:14Speaker 1: let it rock, you know, depending on the mood. But
- 29:18Speaker 1: as a project, as a complete album, let's just start
- 29:22Speaker 1: with Snoop. Snoop when he's with Dre, he's always at
- 29:26Speaker 1: his best. Now, some of you haven't heard a Snoop
- 29:30Speaker 1: album since Doe Stown, so for you, this album may
- 29:34Speaker 1: be disappointing, and who knows, maybe you don't feel like
- 29:37Speaker 1: Snoop sounds like that. But for those who have checked
- 29:39Speaker 1: out snoop albums, especially Blue Carpet Treatment, will know throughout
- 29:47Speaker 1: Snoop's career, wherever he would link with Doctor dre it
- 29:52Speaker 1: was like magic every time. So now you have the
- 29:57Speaker 1: first album since the nineties and I think, like more
- 30:00Speaker 1: than thirty years or something like that, is it Yeah?
- 30:04Speaker 1: Maybe probably, But you have him linking up with Doctor
- 30:09Speaker 1: Drece and his his rhyms of what you expect from Snoop.
- 30:13Speaker 1: He's saying the right things, He's saying it in the
- 30:16Speaker 1: right styles. He even have some bars that made me go, oh, okay,
- 30:20Speaker 1: Snoop didn't expect you to, you know, get that crazy
- 30:24Speaker 1: because what he said, like my name is the brand
- 30:27Speaker 1: or something like that, I'm messing it up. But he
- 30:30Speaker 1: says something really dope, and I just feel like he
- 30:34Speaker 1: was in the pocket for everything. Their songs you know
- 30:38Speaker 1: on there, like the joint with Jelly Roll and Tom Petty.
- 30:42Speaker 1: I'm not necessarily mad at I thought I was gonna
- 30:44Speaker 1: like it at all, but I was like, oh, that's cool.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Then there's a song with Sting that that's the one
- 30:50Speaker 1: where I'm just like, did you really need this? But
- 30:53Speaker 1: I get it. You know what I'm saying. There's superstars,
- 30:55Speaker 1: They're probably gonna go on tours, probably gonna be in stadiums,
- 30:58Speaker 1: and when you hear those twos, you see some people
- 31:01Speaker 1: who will definitely love them. But even without those two records,
- 31:06Speaker 1: he got a joint with method Man that I like,
- 31:08Speaker 1: you got a joint with fifty cent and Eminem that
- 31:11Speaker 1: I think it's dope or cool. You know, at first
- 31:13Speaker 1: it was kind of iffy, but I think fifty showed
- 31:15Speaker 1: up for sure. Eminem is cool. I'm glad. I'm glad
- 31:19Speaker 1: with Eminem. They did not switch to the angry Carnival
- 31:24Speaker 1: beats that he always just like, yoh, put that angry
- 31:27Speaker 1: Carnival on right here? No Rome over the beat that's
- 31:30Speaker 1: head though his verse was cool and probably my favorite
- 31:36Speaker 1: joint on here is out of the Blue. It just
- 31:38Speaker 1: energizes me when I hear it. Second second to that
- 31:42Speaker 1: would be the joint Hard Knocks. So it's a very
- 31:45Speaker 1: dope album. Now where we talk about starting sweat y'all
- 31:48Speaker 1: with this, with this fur and add on, let's make
- 31:51Speaker 1: it quick. But seem like the same thing I said
- 31:57Speaker 1: about Pete Rock and you using samples you recognized through
- 32:02Speaker 1: hip hop's history, whether it's hip hop or a soul
- 32:06Speaker 1: sample that was sampled a lot within hip hop. Doctor
- 32:09Speaker 1: Dre did the same thing. There's a song called Shane
- 32:14Speaker 1: Grula that uses the Ama Jamal sample that Jay Dilla
- 32:20Speaker 1: famously gained the only one but famously used on day
- 32:25Speaker 1: La Soul states is high and at first when it started,
- 32:28Speaker 1: I'm like, Okay, do I really want to hear Snoop
- 32:31Speaker 1: over this? Is it going to work? And it works
- 32:34Speaker 1: and a lot of the records work because when I
- 32:38Speaker 1: tell y'all, Doctor Dre assured, and he does it every time,
- 32:43Speaker 1: it's like the Doctor Dre seal of approval. The crispiness
- 32:49Speaker 1: of sound in this album from the vocals sounding very
- 32:55Speaker 1: clear and crisp and taking advantage of their different vocal textures.
- 33:01Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. From Snoop to Dre to
- 33:03Speaker 1: Method Man fifty like everybody, you know what I'm saying,
- 33:08Speaker 1: but especially the beats because shout out to Kill because
- 33:11Speaker 1: he made a great point when we were talking about
- 33:13Speaker 1: it is that even though it's clear and clean and crispy,
- 33:18Speaker 1: it still knocks as if it's dirty. And for those
- 33:23Speaker 1: who don't know what you're being clean and clear and
- 33:26Speaker 1: clean and crispy. Right. If you go listen to Nelly's
- 33:29Speaker 1: first album, I feel like that sounds phenomenal. I may
- 33:32Speaker 1: not like every song on it, but it just sounds good.
- 33:37Speaker 1: That's crean and clean and crispy. Right. It said cream,
- 33:41Speaker 1: that's the nowche that's a nooche. Okay, relaxed. But you
- 33:47Speaker 1: say like dirty, then you talk about like into the
- 33:51Speaker 1: thirty six chambers. Now, it may not be that dirty,
- 33:56Speaker 1: but the bass, the drums, everything hits the way it
- 34:00Speaker 1: should hit as a hip hop fan. But at the
- 34:03Speaker 1: same time it's pristine. It's like gangster and the gentleman
- 34:07Speaker 1: and the suit kind of thing, right both. I think
- 34:11Speaker 1: that was enough analogies. So there you have it. Those
- 34:16Speaker 1: are my top five hip hop projects of the year,
- 34:21Speaker 1: along with the good ten the other ten that I mentioned.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Check them out if you haven't heard them. What's on
- 34:29Speaker 1: your list? What are some albums that weren't on my
- 34:33Speaker 1: list that you're like, oh, well, here's my top five?
- 34:36Speaker 1: Leave them in the comment section below. I won't stop
- 34:39Speaker 1: listening to hip hop, so if you put something in there,
- 34:42Speaker 1: then I'm like, oh man, I missed that. Let me
- 34:44Speaker 1: check it out. I definitely will and I definitely respond.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Happy holidays to everybody subscribe to the channel. We are
- 34:51Speaker 1: on the road to one thousand subscribers and we almost
- 34:55Speaker 1: think and my hat's falling off. So again, Happy holidays
- 35:02Speaker 1: to everybody, and please remember I'm not getting critty. I'm
- 35:07Speaker 1: a fan face
