- 0:23Colorado, the exclusive club for passionate gamers and betters across the state. Hello
- 0:27Jeff, good morning, Good morning. Uh. I have a question for
- 0:31you. We talked about this a couple of days ago. All these teams
- 0:35left in the NFC Championship Game have amazing offensive lines. They're one of the
- 0:40least sacked teams in the NFL, and the Broncos obviously were not that.
- 0:45They had fifty two sacks in seventeen games this year between Russell Wilson and Jared
- 0:49Stidham. But every guy started virtually every week. How well quandary, you
- 0:58know, they did have a consistent of the same guys up front. If
- 1:02mcglinch you would have played the final game, it would have been the first
- 1:07time I think since like twenty eleven or something like that that all five and
- 1:10started every game in a season. So they haven't had that. They made
- 1:15the big investment this year I mean mcglinchy got the second biggest contract in free
- 1:19agency for any guy who switched teams, so you know, they signed Ben
- 1:23Powers, but they're lucky again. I mean, Cushion Berry is a free
- 1:29agent and I don't think many people expect them to be able to keep them.
- 1:32So I think the other thing you look at with these final four,
- 1:34and nobody wants to say it these days, but three of them are in
- 1:40the top nine and rushing, So it shows you you've got to have that
- 1:44component of physicality. You don't have to be like some run first offense and
- 1:49nobody's you know, saying let's go back to the VR and all that,
- 1:53but you do have to have that physicality right now. And these these might
- 1:59be the or for of the most physical teams in the league of both sides
- 2:02of the ball. And they also have really good quarterbacks, which doesn't hurt
- 2:07well. The big question then, is that physicality born of a want to
- 2:10of the guys up front or is that physicality a commitment from the coaches to
- 2:15run the ball big I think it's both. I mean, you know,
- 2:20Sean Payton kept sort of lamenting their red zone goal to goal crappiness, all
- 2:25year and then you go look at it and their percentage of run calls in
- 2:30the red zones like twenty fifth in the league. So he kept saying they
- 2:35need to run the ball more. But the guy calling the plays, which
- 2:38is him, you know, didn't call runs. So it's one of the
- 2:43quirks of the Broncos season. You know, Sean Payton wasn't very good in
- 2:47late game situations and and he didn't call games the way he said he should.
- 2:54So again it's it'll always be kind of one of the mysteries of his
- 2:59first season here. But he did not. And I looked at you know,
- 3:04I charted tons of Saints games before he got here to look at what
- 3:07they did. I have have gone over one of the Saints playbooks with the
- 3:13former New Orleans player, and the Denver Broncos did not get, you know,
- 3:20Sean Payton's offense this year. So whether that's he couldn't find a way
- 3:23to live with Russell Wilson or not, it just didn't happen. Jeff,
- 3:31I look at what transpired yesterday and Jim Harbaugh going to the Los Angeles Chargers.
- 3:37I am in full freak out mode this morning. I may not look
- 3:39like it. I know, I look, you know, looking and all
- 3:43that stuff. Yeah, but I can I guess my brain goes to the
- 3:47worst case scenario where he makes them a total winner and Herbert takes another step
- 3:53and he becomes the next level kind of guy in a superstar and all this
- 3:55kind of thing. And I think Brett feels the same way. Vic's a
- 3:59bit more. What are we looking at here bro inside the AFC West for
- 4:02the Broncos prospects the next decade. Well, you know, considering he was
- 4:10the Broncos first choice last year, and I've had multiple people I was just
- 4:16gonna say that, I've had multiple people tell me, now, you know,
- 4:20you take it for what you want. But I've had multiple people since
- 4:26tell me he actually took the job briefly and changed his mind. Now,
- 4:30whether you choose to believe that or not, they did. He was the
- 4:34only guy they interviewed twice for that long and they actually loaded up the plane
- 4:42the second time and went to ann Arbor to convince him to come. So
- 4:47he was the first choice. So, uh, you know, obviously the
- 4:51Broncos thought he was a good coach, so they're gonna think he's a good
- 4:55coach. Uh with the Chargers, Harbaugh says no to the Broncos and yes
- 5:01to the Chargers. He probably has more control Vic, That would be my
- 5:05guest. He probably has more control and the uh, you know, and
- 5:10the time maybe different. It was a tough year for him this year.
- 5:13I mean, they won the National Championship, but it was not a fun
- 5:16year. If you're Jim Harbaugh, you know, he got his reputation,
- 5:21took took a pounding, you know, and and the suspensions and all of
- 5:27those things. He probably came into the interview with a different mindset than he
- 5:30you know, he knew he had a good team at Michigan. When he's
- 5:33interviewing with the Broncos, it's good enough to win the National Championship? So
- 5:39justified? Are my fears justified? Are my fears justified? Oh? I've
- 5:44said all along, even before this hire for Sean Payton. The AFC West
- 5:48is a hell of a lot harder than the NFC South ever was. And
- 5:54that's part of the I think that's part of the stress level. You know,
- 5:59inside don't Valley a lot of the time. This is a tougher job
- 6:03than he had in New Orleans, and people can argue that, but you
- 6:08know, I think I've been here long enough to know this is a tougher
- 6:11job, Jeff. Outside of quarterback? What separates these four teams from everybody
- 6:19else in the NFL four teams that are left, and especially the Broncos Because
- 6:24what's funny is we were talking about this, like if you moved Mahomes and
- 6:28law Jackson are different stratus spheres. But if you put goff Er Party on
- 6:31this team, they're't winning twelve games, you know what I mean, Like,
- 6:33they're not going to be that sort of separator. So what's the biggest
- 6:36difference between these four and what the Broncos don't have? Because we've brought up
- 6:41offensive line skill position talent is lacking. That's obvious, Like where do you
- 6:46even go with your draft pick in the first round this year? That's to
- 6:50me? These are four draft built teams too. I mean, we don't
- 6:55want to talk about that here because we all want to talk about free agency
- 6:58and sign this guy and sign that guy, because we all they're known commodities
- 7:01and we people always think you're getting the player in free agency who's already played
- 7:08to that level and off when you don't. These are four draft built teams.
- 7:14I mean, that's just a fact. Look at all the first rounders
- 7:17on the field for these four teams. The Broncos have three on the roster.
- 7:23On the entire roster have three first round picks, one on defense one
- 7:30So that's a huge difference. The other difference is physicality. Look at how
- 7:33these teams play. Yeah, they can throw the ball, and they can
- 7:38throw the ball like crazy, but when they want to and need to,
- 7:42they shove you around and put you in bad positions so they can throw the
- 7:47ball and play action. Broncos Sean Payton was not a big play action guy
- 7:56this year. These four offenses have tons of play action that defenses hate it.
- 8:01And play action works even when you don't run the ball great. So
- 8:05to me, those are the three things I see when I look at these
- 8:09four teams, and that I look at the Brocras. Just to follow up
- 8:11on that too. You know what I realized because I was kind of looking
- 8:13at I was focusing just on the offensive side three of the four teams that
- 8:18are left. You know what's funny. Number one option for the Baltimore Ravens
- 8:22in the past game seems to be a rookie in Za Flowers number one option
- 8:26for the Chiefs right now. In the past game seems to be Rashid Rice
- 8:28number one option for the Lions. Well maybe not number one, but a
- 8:31couple of them, and Jamier Gibs and San Laporte huge parts to their offense.
- 8:35They're all rookies and they played in the team that's not playing for you
- 8:39know, super Bowls or playoff spots. Barely played there one dynamic rookie and
- 8:46Marvin Mims, and it just never made sense. They barely played any of
- 8:50the rookies other than Mems. I mean, and look at you. You
- 8:52named four players draft pick, draft pick, draft pick, draft pick right,
- 8:58and the Broncos I believe last year was their smallest draft pick in almost
- 9:01two draft class five players and they didn't pick until sixty three on draft pick.
- 9:11So their smallest draft class in almost two decades, I believe. And
- 9:15they're going to follow that up with a six player draft class. You are
- 9:18not in the salary taff Era gonna turn things around very quickly with five player
- 9:26and six player draft class. The Rams in the playoffs, second youngest team
- 9:31in the league, thirteen draft picks last year, I believe Packers' youngest team
- 9:37in the league, made the playoffs twelve draft picks. You know, we
- 9:41can again we all love free agency because we know the players were talking about.
- 9:48But if you're going to be around right now in this league, you
- 9:52better be good in April. Win in March doesn't get you to January.
- 9:56Win in April? Does Jeffrey? What happened with Vic Fanjo in Miami?
- 10:01Why is he now the Philly DC. Well, you know he's from there,
- 10:05you know that. And you know he has a relationship with them too
- 10:09that I mean, he worked with them last year during the playoffs. He
- 10:13was a consultant for a couple of weeks. Uh, So I think some
- 10:16of the some of the ground was was sort of moved around then for this
- 10:22And and I'll say I know Vic not you know, I'm not like his
- 10:24best buddy in the media right there, but I know Vic. And he's
- 10:28a lot like in terms of where he stands as an assistant coach. He's
- 10:33a lot like Alex Gibbs was, which is he can't work anywhere he wants,
- 10:37any time he wants. And I think his patience level sometimes uh isn't
- 10:43always going to be there like a young assistant because he knows he will spend
- 10:48about two hours unemployed. Uh, he's just you know, he's that respected.
- 10:54He knows that many people around the league, and there was obviously a
- 10:56disconnect. I mean, some of the Dolphins are couple of the Dolphins put
- 11:01some vague things on social media and all that. But he's just a really
- 11:07good coach and I think for him, he was probably you know, this
- 11:11looked like a pretty good opportunity for him to get closer to home. Less
- 11:16family less thing for you, real quick, your lady. Eight head coaching
- 11:20vacancies in the NFL this year, four have been filled. The greatest coach
- 11:26in the history of the NFL has not gotten one of these jobs. Will
- 11:28he get one of the last four? Like or is there a chance that
- 11:33Belichick can get left out? Well, it's hard for me to believe that
- 11:37there's always a chance. There's always a chance because he his list of demands
- 11:41is probably longer than anybody else's too. I mean, what he wants,
- 11:46he's Bill Belichick. He's not just gonna walk in and take a job,
- 11:50or he doesn't think he's gonna be able to compete or win. And he's
- 11:54gonna want a lot to say, like ownership almost level say in things.
- 12:00He's had that already for a long time, so I think that's part of
- 12:03it. His list of what is a good job looks a lot different than
- 12:09some of these other guys, but it is hard for me to believe he
- 12:11would finish the cycle without a gig. Is Jeff LAGWELLDESPN dot com. He
