- 1:26All right, well it's time for us to continue on with The Sea Legs
- 1:30Matter Parts three and four from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar.
- 1:38You hear me Johnny Dollar calling. This is Universal Ajument nine. Pancy Johnny
- 1:45Dollar Johnny, what kind of a noisy hook up business? Anyway? Man,
- 1:48this call is being relayed to you from an amateur radio station. Well,
- 1:52next time, try the telephone from Porto Gardo, Nigga Roguay. Oh,
- 1:56now you're coming up quite clearly. Port On. It's a little spot
- 2:00on the Caribbean coast, the lands port of call for the sea legs before
- 2:02she was wrecked. Missus Douglas land Via still with you? No, And
- 2:06I don't know where she's gone, which is why I called. She acted
- 2:09just as surprised as I was that we both took the same plane down here,
- 2:14and Pat, I still don't know why she decided to come here at
- 2:16all. Maybe she doesn't like the idea of your going down there to investigate
- 2:20the case. She wouldn't admit it, of course, but that's what I
- 2:22think. Do you think she may try to obstruct your investigation right now?
- 2:25I don't know, because she suddenly charted a small plane and disappeared the work
- 2:30her way back here to the States. Your guess is as good as mine.
- 2:32Look, why don't you hire a watch on her place on Long Island?
- 2:37And if she shows, they're call me at the hotel Providencia. It's
- 2:39in the city of Bluefield right at any event, you think her claims were
- 2:44insurance on the Sea Legs and on Douglas land Via brought you pants. At
- 2:47this point, I don't know what to think tonight and every weekday night.
- 2:59Bob Bailey, in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Pact expensiccount
- 3:04America's fabulous freelance insurance investigators, Truly Johnny Dollar. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar,
- 3:22location San Juan del Pero, Nicaragua, the Universal Adjustment Bureau, Hertford,
- 3:25Connecticut. Following is an account of expenditures and report of activities during my
- 3:30investigation of the Sea Legs matter. Pan, I lied to you during that
- 3:37radio contact a few minutes ago. I do think Connie Landfair's claims for four
- 3:42hundred thousand dollars insurance are fraudulent. Fraudulent is the very devil. But that's
- 3:46why I think so is beyond me at any rate. The assistant who's foisted
- 3:52himself on me down here as a real weirdy, whose name, believe it
- 3:54or not, is Oscar Patrick Vladimir Pascuaro. He rented a plane and has
- 4:00flown me here to Port of Guardo, a half big little town on Nicaragua's
- 4:02east coast. Here is where a radio amateur I made the last contact with
- 4:06the sea legs before it smashed up and sank off the Baldero Islands. And
- 4:11who is the operator of this ham station? Oscar, Patrick, Vladimir and
- 4:15Pascuaro. Such a long talker, mister Dollar. I'm cranking this generator in
- 4:20who my arm is nearly dropping coff And I'm sorry I ask her for that.
- 4:24Contact with the States was important. Even my back is tired. Ha.
- 4:29I know. I'll make an expense account to you, is say ten
- 4:31dollars. You try that, and I'll fly back to Bluefields without you,
- 4:34please, mister Dollar, no joking, please, Without me, you would
- 4:39be a lost soul in this viol contet. Hey tell me something, Why
- 4:43did you ever set up a transmitter in this isolated fishing village? I should
- 4:46set it up in Bluefields. They even wanted me to have some kind of
- 4:49license up there. Disgusting and a waste of money too. That reminds me,
- 4:55do you have a pilot's license? Who needs a pilot's license when those
- 4:58little planes practically fly themselves. Besides the palace license costs money too. Well,
- 5:02I have one, So from here on in I stay at the controls.
- 5:05No confidence, no confidence in two of us. Okay, okay,
- 5:11Now let's get out to that flat where you parked the plane. I want
- 5:13to fly over the spot where the sea legs went down. You see how
- 5:16on valuable I am? Huh about me? You wouldn't even know where to
- 5:19look for the Baldaro Island, you know, darn well? All I have
- 5:23to do is look at the charts and the conpit of the plane. Oh,
- 5:26mister dollar, that wouldn't be fair. The Ballderos turned out to be
- 5:34only six or eight miles off shore, two narrow, little rocky islands that
- 5:40poked up out of the sea to keep each other company in the vast quiet
- 5:43blue expense. One of them was perhaps a mile long, and the other
- 5:46just a couple of one hundred yards away, and stretching parallel to it was
- 5:49even smaller. Sure to a man at the wheel who was unfamiliar with these
- 5:54waters, and without charts, the ball Daros could conceivably be a menace of
- 5:58navigation in the of the night, that is asking, ky, sir,
- 6:04do you remember what time of day it was when the sea legs went down.
- 6:06Of course I remember anything, name stage places, how about the sea
- 6:12legs? Of course I was talking to her about radio. Wow, such
- 6:15a lovely day too, just like today. Why do you know, mister
- 6:17Lanter even promised to take me fishing after we finish the radio contact that thing.
- 6:21What time he even promised you would? Oh, it was exactly ten
- 6:27twenty one am when the radio is ticking from the up suddenly cut off.
- 6:30You're sure that, yes, sir, we were talking away back and forth
- 6:34and they tip nothing. Ten twenty one one question a couple of real good
- 6:44answers. A daylight today, met it was clear and calm and ten twenty
- 6:47one am and full daylight. The bolderos must have stuck out like a sore
- 6:53thumb. Hang on asking, I'm gonna make a tight circle over those islands
- 6:59for a close look. You sure you wouldn't like for me to steer,
- 7:01mister dollar, I'm sure. But if you do all the work, how
- 7:04am I ever going to earn the handsome restrainer you're going to pay me?
- 7:08Why I'm gonna hey, sir, that channel between the islands is as smooth
- 7:12as a mill pond. Sure it is except during a storm, and so
- 7:15clear you can see way down into it. Oscar, I thought there were
- 7:18a lot of pinnacles of rocks sticking up in that channel. Oh maybe at
- 7:23low tide one or two. On the east side there is shallow other I'd
- 7:26like to see it now. And what's supposed to make the channel so dangerous?
- 7:30He couldn't that runs through it when the tide is changing, mister Dollary,
- 7:32how you say ideally, like now when the tide is coming in enough
- 7:38to wreck a boat like the sea legs. If this kipper wasn't botching the
- 7:41road, you should see how the current bobbles and squirms. Hey, look
- 7:45there's a parking case down there floating around you. You see first one direction
- 7:48then the other, shifting around like a crazy Yeah, osk Her, and
- 7:51I think that packing case is going to be a big help to us.
- 7:55Maybe there's something in it that might be worth money or something. Stop thinking
- 7:59of money, then, how we're gonna see just where the current delivers that
- 8:03packing case. You want to know where that packing case will be ending up,
- 8:05That's what I said. Then steer back to Portagardo, to the beach
- 8:09in front of my perlative radio station. Huh sure, how do you think
- 8:13I got all the lumber and furniture and stuff from my radio shop? He
- 8:22was right. From the air, we could see that every bit of flats
- 8:26and passing through the Baldero Island channel on a rising tide wound up in the
- 8:30tiny cove on the channel sandbar, directly in front of Oscar's radio shack.
- 8:33Even now, I was piled high with traits, bits of ships, rigging,
- 8:37odd pieces of furniture that chunk stay down there forever, asking no,
- 8:43no, mister Dolavonta, Mantha real big high tide clumbs along and pressed him.
- 8:48I have a clean front yard again, but I always make it thick
- 8:52up here before then, what do you mean? Sure? That's why was
- 8:56in number one beach brush stop in Corny. What do you mean beach comber?
- 9:00Oh? I have to brush the sound off everything I'd picked up down
- 9:01there, so you didn't laugh. What do I care? Anyhow? You
- 9:05should see some of the valuable things I picked up to sell to the natives.
- 9:07Oh, tell me two years ago when the Landfair's other boat went down.
- 9:11Ah, you should have seen it. Everything that could float in the
- 9:15dried up in my front yard. It was beautiful. How I want the
- 9:18sea legs was wrecked. You know, that's very funny, mister Dollard.
- 9:20There was nothing at all. I don't understand it. Well, I think
- 9:26I do. I think I'm beginning to understand a lot of things about this
- 9:28case. Hang on, ask her. We're flying back to Bluefield expense conidem
- 9:37twelve thirty cents American taxi from the private airport where we'd rented the plane to
- 9:41the headquarters of the Federal Maritime I never will get that straight. Call it
- 9:45a coast guard and Captain Ramirez, she said, you're on July. The
- 9:52here it is. Did they and at ten twenty one, Captain she died
- 9:56at ten twenty one, was just after what you call neep. So that's
- 10:01neat, that's pretty What does that mean? Oh shut up, Oscar,
- 10:05Yeah, I see, Captain neep time at nine forty so it's coming in
- 10:07rising and you see it's send you a dollar rising. Oh go ahead,
- 10:11thanks, captain. Here, buy yourself a cigar, buy yourself a whole
- 10:15box grassy grass. Come on asking him do nothing for me later. Come
- 10:22on, we're going back to the airfield and from there we're gonna fly down
- 10:26the coast again. But mister, I feel so good, I may even
- 10:28let you fly that plane this time for a small pan for a small pittans
- 10:33even now, drag out your best dialect and call that taxi over here.
- 10:41I had am thirteen six bucks for the kepi time, I had him fourteen
- 10:45fifty cents taxi back to the airfield. For some reason, the fair and
- 10:48the old model T went up every time I used it. Or did Oscar
- 10:52wink some kind of a deal with a driver that he could cut in on
- 10:54later. I had him fifteen and another forty five bucks for rental of the
- 10:58plane, and I'm sure it all went into Oscar's pocket. That is,
- 11:01knowledge of the language enable him to persuade the owner. We shouldn't pay two
- 11:05rentals in one day. We headed south and made good time. But where
- 11:11are you going? Another a few minutes dont You'll be down to Conta Rica.
- 11:15What's that little seaport straight ahead? San Juan del Peril, And according
- 11:18to this map it has a more than adequate landing field. Look you see
- 11:22what I see down there on it? Yeah, exactly what I hope to
- 11:26see the twin of this plane, the plane in which missus Landfair disappeared this
- 11:30morning, I'll land right beside it, nor sooner sat. My name is
- 11:33Oscar public Plan. Don't these little fields have any personnel? If they get
- 11:39two planes the month, they think it's the crowd, But there must be
- 11:43somebody. There's the car back of the Hunger Gourd. Then we'll have transportation
- 11:46into town. You still haven't totally why you decided to come here? Was
- 11:50it because missus Lambtern did? That was something I didn't know until I saw
- 11:54that plane down there. All right, easy now on land too close to
- 11:58it. I am in perfect control. Here we go. No ask her.
- 12:01It was a hunch based on the fact I remember that the sea Legs
- 12:05was building this town. Hey, nice landing. Thank you, mister dollar.
- 12:11Maybe a little you don't stop talking about money. You're gonna have to
- 12:15find yourself. Say, I'm like crazy it is. Isn't there someone in
- 12:20the cabin on that other plane gave the car it's coming up to meet us.
- 12:22Hey watch it? Ask her? That darn fool is heading right across
- 12:24the landing. Come the engine? Is he crazy? Counts? You see
- 12:28us a swing high, but don't flip us. Come on more rock.
- 12:31You told me there, that's straighten out. Take all. I can't do
- 12:33what I do those controls and hang on here. He can't feel you know,
- 12:37here, hang on. For a long moment, there was nothing but
- 12:48a vague blackness all about me in the sound of our crack up seem to
- 12:52roll and I go almost streamly back and forth the deep recesses of my mind,
- 12:56and slowly I seemed to hear some of the sound. Yeah, like
- 13:05an engine far off, an engine of a plane starting up and lazily moving
- 13:09away. Sure, yeah, of course I did hear it. It was
- 13:13the other plane, the one that had been parked on the landing strip.
- 13:18And as my mind began to clear, I realized that seen something someone else
- 13:24I'd called a glimpse before the car struck our landing gear of the man behind
- 13:26the wheel of it, a man whose picture I had seen briefly at the
- 13:31home of constant Landfair. But it couldn't be. Oh, mister dollarm I
- 13:43steal alive. Yeah, I'm afraid you are, thank you. But did
- 13:50you Oh did you see who was driving that car? You recognize him?
- 14:00Look, maybe they're both dead like he is. And that's why we saw
- 14:03him. Douglas Lambfair, Yes, sir, mister Douglas Lambfare, Johnny Dollar
- 14:26again like Johnny. Yes, Pat McCrackan universal adjustment in hortphone. Oh hi,
- 14:33Pat, listeners you requested. I had a man sent out to missus
- 14:37Lampair's Long Island home to see if she'd return. I suspicion, wrong,
- 14:41Pad, She's still here very much so when you listen, Shoot, the
- 14:43man was a little over ambitious, let himself into the house or a basement
- 14:48windows. So while he was the other telephone, right, he wasn't crazy
- 14:50enough to answer it crazy like a fox. It was long distance from right
- 14:54where you are now, sandjand del Peril and Johnny. I suspect it was
- 14:58from the man on whose policy issues made a claim prop quarter million dollars her
- 15:01dear departed husband, Douglas Landfair, right, and if so, her claim
- 15:05on him at least his fraudulent. So see if you can dig up some
- 15:09proof, brother, I have it. The man is anything but dead.
- 15:11It was Douglas Landfair who wrecked our plane when we tried to land here a
- 15:15few hours ago. And Johnny get him sure if he doesn't get me first
- 15:30from Special Investigator Johnny Dolly, location San Juan del Peril, Nicaragua to the
- 15:33Universal Adjustment Bureau Hertford, Connecticut. Following is an accounting of expenses incurred during
- 15:39my investigation of the Sea Legs matter. Two hundred and fifty thousand insurance claimed
- 15:46by Missus constant Landfair for the death of Douglas Landfair, an addition one hundred
- 15:52and fifty thousand for the loss of the yap at Sea Legs. Claim number
- 15:56one now proved to be fraudulent, as for number two, the claim on
- 15:58the yacht Expenser conad in fourteen two dollars American to the Banana plantation worker who
- 16:07pulled us out of the small plane that Douglas Landfair wrecked as we tried to
- 16:11land, and another dollar that said plantation worker for a ride in the town
- 16:15in this ancient truck. I must admit that this is one time that my
- 16:18ubiquitous assistant, Oscar Patrick Vladimir Pasquero came in handy through his knowledge of the
- 16:22Spanish Indian dialects spoken in these parts. Apparently, San Juan del Pero had
- 16:30once been a fairly busy little seaport, but over a period of years,
- 16:33the sea had slowly and exorpentally washed in shallow sandbars, and only a handful
- 16:37of small cargo on fishing boats now negotiated the narrow channels that led out to
- 16:41the Blue Caribbean. The town itself was scattered around a small marketplace near the
- 16:45docks. There were a few stone and brick buildings, including the San Andrea
- 16:49Hotel, but most of them were weather beaten frame structures. An occasional Asian
- 16:55American car kicked up the dust, but most of the street traffic was ox
- 16:59carts. I had am fifteen two dollars American to a doctor with an unpronounceable
- 17:03name. Came to our room at the San Andre and patched us up,
- 17:06and about seven pm he left, after instructing us to spend the rest of
- 17:08the night in bed. Adam sixteen another two dollars for a sumptious dinner brought
- 17:12to our room American dollars, I learned, go far in this place,
- 17:17unless, of course, Oscar gets his hands on them. You could let
- 17:19me handle all the bill through while you're here in Nicaragua, mister dollar,
- 17:22Yeah, sure, and lets you take a fifty percent commission on all of
- 17:26them. But mister dollar, when the poor fellow who rented us that plane
- 17:30to get done here starts patching it up, my expense account is going to
- 17:33take a big enough beating. I have no fear. I will supervise the
- 17:36repair from the plane myself. Yeah, for a small pittance, of course.
- 17:41Ah, what a wonderful din there now to sleep it off? You
- 17:47sleep all you want, Oh, I got work to do work. Yeah.
- 17:51Besides, you still haven't told me why we flew down here in the
- 17:52first place. I still don't listen. Oscar. A couple of years ago,
- 17:56land Fair lost a power cruiser off the Baldero Island. No I told
- 18:00you. I helped him and his wife and his captain get the shore.
- 18:03He collected eighty five thousand dollars for that boat from his insurance company. I
- 18:06saw the boat. It was worth the eighty five thousand, so he should
- 18:08have insured it for more, maybe one hundred thousand. Made himself a profit
- 18:11in a very poor business matter. Will you listen? The ease of collecting
- 18:15on that loss must have given him ideas. What's more, he could do
- 18:18with some money. The bridal of state was running law anyhow. A few
- 18:22weeks ago. He brings a yacht, a motor sailor down here, right,
- 18:26This one's insured for one hundred and fifty thousand, and his own life
- 18:29is insured for a quarter million. Maybe he's not such about businessman after all.
- 18:33He takes the sea legs out to the very same place where he lost
- 18:36the first boat. This time he leaves his wife ashore and the skipergoat alone,
- 18:41presumably to check on some new radio equipment he's installed. Sure, we
- 18:44made the radio contact from my own personal center on shore. I put the
- 18:47guard, but the contact was suddenly cut off. I had and the next
- 18:51thing we know, missus ellis back at her home on Long Island, claiming
- 18:53a total of four hundred thousand. Well, why not if she thought he
- 18:56went down with the board, because I don't think she did. What's more
- 19:00proof, of course, I knew it all the time, because if he
- 19:03drowned off the Bunada Islands, what was he doing here today driving the car
- 19:07that wrecked our plane unless he was dead. And do you know something,
- 19:11mister Dolla, I don't believe it, Oscar. There was somebody in the
- 19:14cabin of that other plane waiting to take off with him after he smashed our
- 19:18landing gear. You didn't see who, No, but I'll give you odds
- 19:21it was Constant Landfair. Another thing, she said that when the sea legs
- 19:25went down, she heard it go over the radio. You said that the
- 19:27signal just suddenly cut off. You don't think they of us wrecked at all,
- 19:33not anymore than I think Landfair went down with it. Then there is
- 19:36it? Well, I have a hunch it's right here in San Juan del
- 19:38Peril. Yes, but wouldn't everybody know the boat? Oh Oscar. One
- 19:42of the oldest insurance rackets in the world is to fake a shipwreck, take
- 19:45the hull of some obscure foreign port, dress it up a new paint and
- 19:48rigging, then put it to sea again. Why didn't I think of such
- 19:51a god? If I remember rightly, I spotted a couple of old shipyards
- 19:53down here when we circle the land. Yeah. Sure, but there's only
- 19:56one that does any work. You know it is I Do you see how
- 20:00invaluable I am to you? And that's where we're going right now. But
- 20:03mister dollar, but if you do find the boat, what do you mean
- 20:07mister Landfair has already flew the goose. He took off in the other plane
- 20:11after we cracked up. Look, well, take things as they come along.
- 20:15Right now, while we're here, I want to look for that yacht.
- 20:18I saw an excellent picture of it, and I'm sure if I find
- 20:19it, I can identify it. And if we do find it, we
- 20:22will have twice the case against the landfairs. Mister, mister Dollar, I
- 20:29am fortunate to be working for such a spelling silver fourteens for the most outstanding
- 20:36intelligent eas Get your hands out of my pockets. There's one other thing I'd
- 20:40like to find. One person, unless Landfair murdered him. Who is one
- 20:44man crew? Oh Gonzalez, the same man as on the first three.
- 20:48Well, if he was allowed to live through the first wreck, he was
- 20:51probably in cahoots with Landfair and therefore is still around. Would you recognize him
- 20:56if you saw him? Maybe so, maybe not the first three if he
- 21:00was big and fat, the second tree was skinnier. He wore a beard
- 21:03on his face. If he's changed again, Yeah, you're a lot of
- 21:07help. I thought you never forgot a name or a face, But mister
- 21:11Dollar him, I never made any money off of Well, come on,
- 21:15get into your clothes and let's prowl around the shipyard. It was only a
- 21:22few minutes after eight, but the town was practically asleep, except for an
- 21:26old saloon down near the docks. Quietly, so not to disturb the snoozing
- 21:32night clerk, we let ourselves out of the hotel and headed for the waterfronts.
- 21:36The night was clear and moonlit, so we had no trouble finding the
- 21:38way. I glanced hopefully into the open door of the dark side saloon as
- 21:45we passed it, and I chuck over at the incongruity and the music bluring
- 21:48away, But of course saw no one that Wait a minute, asking sir
- 21:53at that table in there drinking beer, Hey, can one of them be
- 21:57the Raymon Gonzales you mentioned? Can tell from here and send one little There
- 22:02must be a hundred who are skinny and very dirty, little beard on the
- 22:06face, did you tell from close up? Sure? What do you recognize?
- 22:10You? So? What might not be very healthy for you? Ah,
- 22:14mister Dollar, working on an important campaign for you, my dearest friend,
- 22:18I would gladly lay down my life for you for a small pedtence,
- 22:22of course, of course, anyhow, how would you know I am working
- 22:26for you? Okay? Okay? Then sonor and then take a look.
- 22:29Okay, how I reckon? Good evening gentlemen? Nice say wether we're having
- 22:47hanah es Wendia No eh? Well, well well if it isn't my old
- 22:57parler among Gonzales, how are you, Yester Harrow, me a stranger.
- 23:06I'm one of your oldest and dearest friends, and me an ego, Remember
- 23:12yeld I am Oscar Patrick, bloody people, Scuerrow, you know, just
- 23:18a fine old Spanish name who helped you assure that time when you no no,
- 23:22no, no, no no, we'll put on that bottle the motto
- 23:36mister Dollar. Mister I don't think they like you to interrupt that little beer
- 23:40party. He threatened me that I might. He said he would kill me,
- 23:42is he reminded Zalie, Yes, yes, I'm sure he seems to
- 23:48Dollar. He did not go down with the ship. You're telling me,
- 23:51well, aren't you going to do something about him later? If I locate
- 23:53the sea legs cautiously quiet, looking back over my shoulder. Now we prowled
- 24:02through the old shipyard and finally, led by the smell of fresh paint,
- 24:06I found it. The once clean white hull was painted a gaudy red and
- 24:10blue and given the appearance of age. The mahogany rail and taffrel had been
- 24:15replaced with iron pipe, the beautiful teakwood deck painted a dirty gray. The
- 24:19wheelhouse have been moved, the cabin old had even the mass spousepritt and general
- 24:23rigging changed. Stanchions, cleats, all the hardware that once been polyshed bronze
- 24:29was now corroded or painted over. All in all a quick, very thorough
- 24:33job of disguise. It's a change from a graceful, expensive yacht to a
- 24:37rather weary looking fishing schooner. But it was the sea legs, all right.
- 24:42I would never believe it, mister dollar. I never would have recognized
- 24:48it. Are you sure? Wind your hand over the transfermetor you can feel
- 24:52where the lettering has been painted over? Or not? Somebody? That's two
- 24:57right? Now? Do you see where the outline of the lettering is underneath
- 25:02this last coat of painted seeles? But it was such a beautiful boat.
- 25:10No, it looks like like a dirty old tramp. Well what do we
- 25:18do now? Go back to that saloon and latch onder Raman Gonzales, make
- 25:22him talk, sure, only I'll wait for you. He's so big and
- 25:30strong mister. That knife in his belt, Why I thought you said you'd
- 25:33lay down your life. Sure, sure, but what could he tell you
- 25:38that you don't already know now where the land first headed when they took off
- 25:42on that plane. Come on, but I okay you, I was afraid
- 25:56of that. Look the knife in his hand. Ask her if he makes
- 25:59one more to throw it, pull the trigger? No, no, no,
- 26:03no, I sweat, but I have a couple of fish. Well,

- 27:37episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, Roy Rowan speaking welcome back, Well,
- 28:45folks, tell about nine or ten years ago that was about all of the
- 28:48Sea Legs Matter that there was listeners to the original series or the conclusion to
- 28:56the Sea Legs Matter, and who knows, it may have been replaced a
- 29:00little later on Armed Forces Radio Services, but it was nearly fifty years until
- 29:06anyone actually heard the concluding episode again. It was the very last of the
- 29:11five part serial to be completed, and we'll let you in on it on
- 29:17Friday. Overall, this has been a pretty good episode. The one thing
- 29:22I didn't like was the ending talking about a downside to victory, because at
- 29:26this point I'd rather be in suspense about what will happen to Johnny, even
- 29:32though logically I know he's gonna win, but what will happen sort of clothes
- 29:37would seem to make better sense. But be that as it may. That'll
- 29:42actually do it for today. Join us on Friday for the conclusion of the
- 29:48Sea Legs Matter, and we will also of course be starting Manhunt tomorrow.
- 29:55An an episode of Nick Carter's coming up. In the meantime, you can
