- 0:00You have arrived. Welcome to the ASPY world.
- 0:04Here's where we talk about anything and everything ASD in
- 0:07an upbeat and informative way. And now here's your man on the
- 0:11spectrum, your autism Ambassador, Daniel Morgan Jones.
- 0:19So let's have autism and depression in females, right?
- 0:22Hey guys, welcome back to the aspy world.
- 0:24My name is Dan. I have autism and ADHD and I
- 0:26make weekly videos on this subject.
- 0:28It's my life's work and I want to help as many people as
- 0:30possible. Social and you're around here
- 0:31and you want to join me on this journey and get really like just
- 0:33pumped robot. Hit the subscribe button down
- 0:36below and follow me on the other social media platforms I have
- 0:38available now. Guys.
- 0:40Yeah, I wanted to do this deal because I feel like there's many
- 0:42components that there's so many. I wanted to do this for a long
- 0:45time. Now.
- 0:45If you're new to me and you don't know, I do have an Autism
- 0:47Life Act PDF book for free that you can get from autismhacks.net
- 0:51and you can go there right now and download the book.
- 0:52In terms of depression and girls on the autism spectrum, you
- 0:56know, for a long, long time, people didn't believe that girls
- 0:58on the autism spectrum insisted because all the research, all
- 1:01the diagnostic kind of tools and criteria were all done for
- 1:04males. This stemmed fact from, you
- 1:06know, 1942 where Hans Asperger and Leo O'Connell, which you're
- 1:08looking at boys. And then they were like there's
- 1:11a huge unrepresented kind of like mega deficit of females on
- 1:14the Austin spectrum. We never got diagnosed.
- 1:16You know, I was interviewing somebody in my podcast a couple
- 1:18of years ago who was saying that the mother was diagnosed with
- 1:20autism when she was 72. It's times like that.
- 1:22And you think, wow, you know, there's there's some differences
- 1:25here in how we can progress and move forward.
- 1:28So because of that, I feel like a lot of girls who do suffer
- 1:32from autism and mental health issues have a higher risk of
- 1:36actually having depression. Because if you have undiagnosed
- 1:38autism, then you are going to be forgotten about.
- 1:41You're not going to get the help, you're not going to get
- 1:43the support, you're not going to get the the network that you
- 1:45need. And so depression will creep in
- 1:47because you're looking for help and answers that you don't even
- 1:50know the answer to yourself. And I think that is a big, big
- 1:52struggle. Now the other thing that that
- 1:55comes into this is that when you then find out that you are
- 1:58autistic and you're female and then you hear what all the years
- 2:00that you were undiagnosed because they thought it was just
- 2:02males that could cause depressional episodes as well.
- 2:05Now depression is a mental health disorder, so there is
- 2:07help available for people with mental health issues.
- 2:10Now we'll get into another reason why you know the
- 2:12challenges in in in diagnosis and other things like that.
- 2:15But if you are suffering from any mental health issues
- 2:17including depression or anything like that, I highly recommend
- 2:20checking out talking to a therapist, using the app Better
- 2:23Help. Your better help is LinkedIn.
- 2:24The description down below. It is a online app.
- 2:27You can talk to a therapist through texting or phone or
- 2:29video. I've used it and within 2448
- 2:31hours they will match you up with somebody who's skilled in
- 2:33the area of whatever your needs app.
- 2:35It's ADHD or mental health issues or whatever.
- 2:37You can check out the link down below.
- 2:38Super awesome. I think it's amazing and it's a
- 2:40great access to people who don't like going out all the time to
- 2:43go see a therapist. Now.
- 2:44The challenges of the diagnosis stem from the fact that most of
- 2:47the training was done based on males and a lot of the doctors,
- 2:50a lot of practitioners, a lot of pediatricians, people who you
- 2:53think would have your your best interests at heart, which they
- 2:55do. They don't have the best
- 2:57training. And that training allowed for a
- 3:00deficit for girls to slip through the net.
- 3:02Because camouflaging or masking as it's called in the Austin
- 3:04community, is where girls will kind of have this pretence
- 3:08around them like a character. They'll play a character for the
- 3:10times that they feel really out of their death.
- 3:12It may be social situations or working whatever.
- 3:15And then to the camouflage they'll put on this mask that
- 3:17they will just kind of be happy and bubbly and going along with
- 3:19those things, even though inside they're having a really
- 3:20difficult time understanding it and and wanting to do it.
- 3:23Now what comes from that is when they come home and they can be
- 3:27themselves, they just completely release all that emotional
- 3:30tension and it's not good. And that release of emotion can
- 3:33then end up in in depression, which is something really sad
- 3:36because mental health services are probably at the Max limit at
- 3:40the moment thanks to things like COVID and stuff like that.
- 3:42But also if you had in late diagnosis, it's just a whole
- 3:45thing. So my advice is to stay strong.
- 3:48Don't worry if. You are suffering from.
- 3:49You know depression and you're only alternate spectrum.
- 3:51There is help available and I think that reaching out and
- 3:55talking to somebody is the best way forward.
- 3:56But I do know that there is a huge call for more support in
- 3:59this area. So if you want to leave your
- 4:02support and a comment down below, I think that'd be amazing
- 4:04and we could all support each other.
- 4:05OK guys, I got to go through a piece.
