- 2:57Trent, the ex magician turned rackets detective, has a story tonight about basketball
- 3:00betting pools, which currently manas a great American sport, and here he is.
- 3:06Thank you, Roger Bowman. I'd never given much thought to basketball gambling
- 3:09pools until unpleasant little stories began to crop up here and there in the sports
- 3:14world. My first real experience came one evening when Patsy, Ryan and I
- 3:19were watching a thrilling game between a couple of closely matched teams. Oh,
- 3:23Mike, this is the most exciting basketball game I've ever seen. Riley,
- 3:25don't patch it, you relaxed? Why it's only a basketball? What a
- 3:31game? It's the Comets can just overcome that two pointly? Good good Kine
- 3:35got the ball, weights on them, always hambling down the flo shoot game
- 3:38shot. We wanted bad games? Why all the flat for miss glad from
- 3:43other basket of be Hurry, there's a gun. The game's over the Comets
- 3:47news Mike, Like, the game isn't overwork, Patsy, that shot we
- 3:54heard it wasn't from a timekeeper. Look at Kay there's blood all over his
- 3:59jersey. He's been shot. Well, Mike, Mike, there's Tilly the
- 4:00plane cost brought out on the floor. Look. Look he's pointing to the
- 4:04door that leads from the show. What a beautiful spot for a murder.
- 4:09Every eye in the place glew down the plane for people waiting for the gun
- 4:12to go. Oh, they're putting Kane on a stretch or I hope that
- 4:15boy is not badly here. Come on, Patsy, let's get out of
- 4:16here. Michael, do we have to leave? Come on, Mike,
- 4:18aren't we gonna wait and see what happened to? Police have gone to the
- 4:20show? Yeh In the shower room has two entrances from the outer hall a
- 4:24murderers had all the time. He needs to make a getaway murder. Oh
- 4:27no, please, Patsy. Look, I've seen enough murder victims in my
- 4:30time to know when the thumbs collapse into the palms like that, it's all
- 4:33over. Look, come on, look, why don't you go down and
- 4:36talk to Captain Kelly. You might be able to hear I about to stay
- 4:40out of it for the time being. What a nice youngster like that shut
- 4:43in a coop of blood and they talk about sportsmanship? Oh no, Patsy,
- 4:47you can't think the Comets had anything to do with this. Well?
- 4:49Who else? Right? Doing a game? Right when it looked like kan
- 4:51We's going to tie the score? I hope that opinion gets a good play,
- 4:56Patsy. In the meantime, let's go Max. Give me your call,
- 5:08mister trent E on a level you ready to teach me that bottom dally
- 5:12or for sure she was glad to do it. Money, if you got
- 5:14the credits on you, for sure? Oh wait a minute, this deck
- 5:17is strippers. They won't do huh well hardly, I didn't think so let
- 5:21me see. Nope, this here deck's all gimmicked for slick ace workers.
- 5:27Gee, I better run down a cigar store and pick up a plane die.
- 5:29Just a minute, money, I want to ask you something. I've
- 5:32been watching the basketball game results. Yeah, that stuff's getting to be quite
- 5:36a racket, ain't it? Racket? Money? Yeah, if you're a
- 5:40very help g you can pick yourself up two three hundred bucks with a very
- 5:43slight amount of weight. But I wondered if there weren't some good bedding pools,
- 5:47you know, not good maybe, but awful, big Ian. I
- 5:50don't know what's wrong. They're running kind of sub rosa. I'm very quiet
- 5:56too, since this little accident at the comet game last Wednesday night. Oh
- 6:00you mean you think gambling was connected in some way with that murder? Me?
- 6:04I wouldn't know. I'm strictly a small time card mechanic, mine of
- 6:09my own business and trying to work my way up. But Uh, I've
- 6:13hired stuff and things, uh, stuff muddy like what the teams was awful
- 6:17close and local Doe was riding on her comets but natch, but natch.
- 6:23And it was kind of fortunate that this Cane guy dribbles his way right smacking
- 6:27to a slug from a forty five. Not very fortunate for Cane. Somebody
- 6:30has to lose. And it wasn't the press that ended up with the shorts.
- 6:35The press. Don't tell me I've missed one of the racket elite.
- 6:39He's called the press because he's a very hoity torty operator see strictly gambling pools,
- 6:44punchboards and why you know, high class rackets. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 6:46very high class. He operates big, just like the president of a
- 6:50big corporation led their office furniture. The wakes paper strew all over his desk
- 6:56with statistics on her with what money numbers? Odd numbers? Yell, And
- 7:01he operates the basketball pool, the big one. What's his real name?
- 7:05Ah, you wouldn't believe it. Well, I'll try money Waltham, Buff,
- 7:12Ain't that Alulu? Yeah? Where can I find them? The buff
- 7:15Publishing Company. But I'm one of you, mister, Trent. You're throwing
- 7:17your money to the four wins. You've never felt called upon to warn me
- 7:21away from the city slickers before, Marty. Look, you used to be
- 7:26a magician. You got hands to what they can do. There ought to
- 7:28be a law against that is. But the basketball pool. Uh, that
- 7:32ain't no matter what hands, mister Trent. But strictly from the head,
- 7:35I see, And you don't think my head works so good? Is that
- 7:40it? Well, when a guy tries to beat odds like what you get
- 7:43on a basketball pool, he's lost up a dead end street or one thing
- 7:46money. I suppose a lot of people would feel the same way you do.
- 7:50And I don't like to be laughed at. So if you could keep
- 7:54it mumu for match? And now that bottom deep? Oh yes, well,
- 7:58I'm sorry. I don't have time to show it to you now,
- 8:00but dropping anytime when you have a free hour or two on your hands,
- 8:01I'm a free thim. Now listen, Yeah, I'll tell you what.
- 8:05Here's here's a little finger exercise you should do first, though, you know,
- 8:09the limber up your practices for a couple of weeks. Yeah, you
- 8:11bend each finger all the way back until it touches the wrist like like,
- 8:18hey, a guy can break us fingers that way. Yeah, that's it's
- 8:22all. Keep trying. Well, what did you people want? I'm a
- 8:35very busy man, extremely busy, are you really, mister? That's right,
- 8:39But a few young people have written a great American novel. I'm the
- 8:43wrong publisher for you. Oh, we don't write, mister. No,
- 8:46No, Michael's a statistician. He not so loud, patsy. Do you
- 8:50mind if I close the door, mister b Now what is this anyway?
- 8:56Well, mister buff how would you like to put all your competition out of
- 8:58busines? Now, listen, young man, do you know what kind of
- 9:03publishing house this is? Oh, yes, sir, we have a way
- 9:07for you to run all the rest of the basketball pools right out of business,
- 9:11bankrupt them, not we, Michael, it's not your idea. Really.
- 9:16Well, oh, I suppose you want me to offer longer odds than
- 9:18my competitors. Well no, it isn't a matter of keeping your competitors from
- 9:24giving business. It's a matter of giving them business, the wrong kind of
- 9:30business. I failed to comprehend. Now, if you just get to the
- 9:33point I missed to both I have a system, the Trent system. It's
- 9:37a system for picking winning basketball teams. Now, with it, you'll compet
- 9:41against your competitors and put them all right out of business. What nobody ever
- 9:45believes in at first until they see the results. I'm sorry, I can't
- 9:48give you any more time. If you were, we offered you a real
- 9:52opportunity, and you just laugh at us. You try to put us out
- 9:56of your office. Well, if it's so good, let him make money
- 9:58with it himself. You mean you'd let me bet in your pool, bet
- 10:03against you. That's exactly what I mean, Michael. No, he just
- 10:07wants to see what teams you'll pick, and then he'll capitalize on our idea.
- 10:11He'll go out and make big bets with his competitive I don't care what
- 10:13teams you pick. I will not bet with my competitors. I have never
- 10:18bet on a basketball pool, and I don't intend to start now. And
- 10:22there are people waiting to see me. So if you'll kind, I'd like
- 10:24to make up bet with you, mister buff a big bet to show my
- 10:26confidence in my system. Go right ahead, where you let Michael Marcus pool
- 10:31ticket and then seal it in an envelow I'll let him nail it into a
- 10:35packing case of your life. That's not necessary, just so he can seal
- 10:39it in a blow. Right all right? Here the pool ticket for tonight's
- 10:43games. Here's an envelope. Now go ahead. You mustn't look while I'm
- 10:50picking my teams. The idea is you put a check mark after the team
- 10:54you want. Is that a check mark or an x? Either one?
- 10:58By the ways, that are right? To try to pick all twelve games.
- 11:01You pick all twelve games, and I will pay you fifty to one,
- 11:05oh, Michael, fifty to one. That means we'll win fifty thousand
- 11:09dollars. What you mean to say, You're going to bet a thousand dollars?
- 11:15Isn't that all right? Why? Of course? Not only all right,
- 11:20it's great. Uh, just put up the money and I'll give you
- 11:24a receipt. Oh five oh. One thing though, if you try to
- 11:28open this envelope and look at my selections before I come in, the bets
- 11:30off. If you never have anything worse than that to worry about, you
- 11:35live to be an old man. Oh, let me see the envelepe Michael
- 11:39there, now, who can we trust to keep it? How about Marty
- 11:45Griggs? What he's a mutual friend. Did you think he's your special source
- 11:52of information? I know all about you, Trent. You wasted an awful
- 11:56lot of time with that dumb act. Michael, I don't want to can
- 12:00what, mister buddy. Don't tire yourself out acting, my dear. If
- 12:03the boyfriend wants to throw a thousand dollars down the train trying to get something
- 12:05on me, let him go right ahead. All right, here's one thousand
- 12:09dollars, Buff, and I want that receipt you mentioned. Of course you
- 12:15are. And Marty Greggs holds the envelope right. Rather silly way to waste
- 12:20your money, Trent. Maybe it weren't. Don't I look like a good
- 12:26enough businessman to get you out of the way. Oh well, Marty tells
- 12:31me you're pretty clever with your hands. For really, if I were you,
- 12:37I try using my head. Oh well, thanks for the tip list
- 12:41to Buff, I'll see a Saturday night to collect. I wouldn't hold my
- 12:45breath if I were you. Well, thanks for your time. Bye,
- 12:56Yes, boss, come in here right away, Boss, you want You
- 13:05heard the little act the private dick put on for me, didn't you clear?
- 13:07Oh? Oh sure? I made a record of it. Boss,
- 13:11have one of the boys watch Marty Griggs between now and Saturday night. I
- 13:13don't trust him. Watch him. Who you want to do it? Leroy?
- 13:20I guess he's handled himself rather well lately. Yes, I think Leroy
- 13:26deserves a promotion. Do you want to pick me to hold this dunvelope?
- 13:41Mister TRENTP I'm friends with both of you guys. Yes, mister Walsam Buff
- 13:45infront. That wasn't very nice of you money to spoil our little act for
- 13:48mister Buff. Oh. Now, listen, mister Trent. If I don't
- 13:52know and you take it that way, I just stayed away from Buff.
- 13:54But you never say I told you to keep it confidential, didn't I?
- 13:56Yeah, but he was going to know about it anyway, if you've hold
- 14:00on him, and I was looking out for your best interests. I told
- 14:03you these pools were sucker stuff. Let's just have one thing straight money Sure?
- 14:07Sure you know me, mister Trent? Yeah, you bet, I
- 14:09know you. That's why I want an understanding. You tamper with that sealed
- 14:13envelope and you'll be in a lot of trouble. And I'm not kidding.
- 14:16No, I can see that. I may not operate the way your friends
- 14:20do. But if you think I can't run you out of town, you're
- 14:22badly mistaken. So it's up to you to keep that envelope sealed and away
- 14:26from idle hands. I understand, sure, don't worry about it. Hey,
- 14:33on a level you you think you're gonna win that bet. I know
- 14:35I'm gonna win it. Oh how do you do? Oh did you want
- 14:39to see mister Trent got the envelope? Mightey envelope? Oh? Sure,
- 14:46yeah, I got it. Why come on then, Pelly, huh,
- 14:50come on where I've been given the promotion? Muddy, don't dank to have
- 14:54you allow set up. I don't know what you're talking about. Leeroy the
- 14:58prayers, he says to me, keep an eye on Marty. Let him
- 15:03out of your sight. After he got this envelope and the press. He
- 15:07thinks that I've got to do a gum shoe act Chadwin and all that stuff.
- 15:13Ain't that rich? Mighty? He sure is? Leroight, yeah,
- 15:16straight lines, that's me, mrighty. No going around corners, no beating
- 15:20around bushes. The order says, don't let Marty out of your sight.
- 15:26So you know what mighty? What do you mean, Leroy? From now
- 15:31till Saturday night? Mrty, I'm moving in with you. But that's not
- 15:37fair, mister buck, he can't do that. Out there, lady is
- 15:43a bet that calls for real long odds. I guess you'll have to sleep
- 15:58on a chair, he Roy, Sure, what's wrong with a bed?
- 16:03It's a single. It ain't big enough for both of us. I can
- 16:15see you gotta be thoughts of manners, Muddy Huh when you got company,
- 16:19you give nothing but the best. Look at the praise. Did you ever
- 16:25knows how polite he is? If you think I'm giving up my bed to
- 16:27a guy that muscles in on me with friends? Muddy? Well? Quiet?
- 16:34Who's there? Hit me? Who? Hey? Something must be up
- 16:38at dolls? Hey? What are you doing here? Well? I figured
- 16:42you two wouldn't be smart enough to know it's raining dollar bill, so I
- 16:47decided to drop in for a little visit. Listen, clear who you trying
- 16:49to kid? Look, you two don't think this fellow Trent is really gonna
- 16:53pick all twelve games? Do you? Guy? Did it two years ago
- 16:57in a five bucks bed? The way those twos are handicapped every game is
- 17:00a toss up, right, Sure, I can't figure Trent's angle. He's
- 17:06got me kind of worry. Twelve games each a toss up, so most
- 17:10of the suckers figure it ought to be a twelve to one payoff, right,
- 17:14yeah, but it's a twelve bet parlay, and that means the odds
- 17:18are over four thousand to one. Buff's very generous paying fifty to one.
- 17:22Don't make me laugh, poor persent to one. Huh. Start figuring the
- 17:26odds against picking all twelve and it gets up into the millions. Were you
- 17:30trying to do? Make us cry for Trent? Anybody with the brains of
- 17:33a gnat knows he isn't gonna win, and he'll know it soon as he
- 17:37sees the results of other games posted on the scoreboard Saturday night. Well so
- 17:41what genius? So he figures, well, I've lost the dough. This
- 17:45is a goodbye, and he don't come round to collect nat. That's where
- 17:49you boys need my brains. I don't get it. I got a pool
- 17:53ticket unmarked, and I can get an envelope from the press's office, just
- 17:59like the one you boy. I'm at the game Saturday night and I check
- 18:02off this ticket as the scores come in. Hey, maybe you got something
- 18:07there at that I slipping boys the sealed envelope and you forget the one this
- 18:11Trent fixed up. Yeah, and I suppose you think the pres would pay
- 18:14out fifty grand without tramp being there? Here, you're Sam, you're the
- 18:18one that's dumb, Leroy. This guy Trent can be handled easy. I
- 18:22ain't so sure about that, Cleo, don't be dumb. I'll explain to
- 18:26him how we can work things if he loses. All he has to do
- 18:29is give me a high sign. After the game is over, we give
- 18:32him twenty thousand bucks and keep ten apiece for ourselves. Rus shiad he get
- 18:36twenty on us only ten? Plenty of reasons, including the big one that
- 18:40the deal wouldn't be worth ten cents without him? Well, are you with
- 18:45me? It ain't exactly being honest with the Pres. With all the soft
- 18:49ough he's made out of this pool racket. My heart's breaking for him.
- 18:53Well, there's been time when ten grand would have come in handy, Ain't
- 18:59that right? Mudy? I can't think of anything handier. Then it's a
- 19:02deal, is it, Leroy? You're supposed to be watching me? Sure?
- 19:07But can I help it if I don't see everything that happens deal me
- 19:11in clio. It beats killing basketball players for a living. Shut up,
- 19:15waste cract like that ain't funny enough now, I was just choking that could
- 19:19leaft. You're right out of circulation, baby, something you don't talk about.
- 19:23I just wanted to make it clear that we all ought to trust each
- 19:26other, Leroy, because we all got things we could say about each other.
- 19:32Catch mm, catch like you look like you've lost your last friend.
- 19:48Friend. What's that you worried about your basketball? Bet? No, but
- 19:52I thought that that would start things, Betsy, what kind of things?
- 19:56Well? I kept thinking something was bound to break, that Waltham buff would
- 20:00get nervous, that Marty Griggs would get scared, that this overgrown shadow lely
- 20:03Roy would get tough. But god gunness, So all you can do is
- 20:07win fifty thousand dollars. That's not the point, Patsy. Look, I
- 20:11want to catch that murderer. I want to put a stop to this sort
- 20:14of thing. Michael, fifty thousand dollars isn't the point. I've never seen
- 20:18you work in a case where you didn't ponder as much about your fee as
- 20:22about the actual solution. The people who pay my fees never complain, do
- 20:25they miss? They're never in a position to complain. Oh, how do
- 20:29you do? Did you want to see mister Trent? Yes? Alone?
- 20:33Oh well, I guess that can be arranged. You were just leaving anyway,
- 20:38wyn't you? Patsy? Oh? Oh, certainly have a good time
- 20:45bye? She seemed kind of soup. I forget it. What can I
- 20:51do for you? It's what I can do for you, mister. I'm
- 20:55gonna lay my cards right on the table. I work for Waltham Buff.
- 21:00You know all about your thousand dollars, Bed, Well, you got one
- 21:03chance in a million of winning. But that doesn't mean you can't show a
- 21:07neat profit. You know you interest me. Look, if you've picked all
- 21:11the teams, there's no reason for you to deal. But if you miss
- 21:15the boys and I got away, so you can still do pretty good.
- 21:18Twenty grand we get the other thirty not bad? Huh uh No, No,
- 21:26you mean you'd switch envelopes. I missed Buff, sure, and I'm
- 21:30in a spot where I could do it easy without a chance in the world
- 21:33of getting caught. Interested. Frankly, no, not even slightly. But
- 21:40why not. It's a fair deal, all wrong, and Leroy have already
- 21:44made me a better deal. They've offered me twenty five thousand. Who do
- 21:48you think you're fooling? They wouldn't have a nerve, No, but you
- 21:52just watched and see if you think you can trick me into offen your bigger
- 21:55spots. I wouldn't even try. As I said, I've already made a
- 21:59deal, and if you don't believe it, we'll just drop around for the
- 22:03payoff. I'll be there, mister, don't you worry. Oh, they're
- 22:15putting up the scroll of another game on the board night. Was that one
- 22:18of the games on your pool ticket? I don't remember, Patsy. Do
- 22:22you mean to say you haven't even kept track of? What good would that
- 22:26do? Patsy? I'm watching this game, Clark says, forty seconds to
- 22:29go, Michael, what are you doing? Oh? You mean standing up
- 22:33and putting my hat on and then tipping it. That's a signal, Patsy,
- 22:37that's a signal to whom Well, that's the funny part of it,
- 22:40a signal to nobody. It'd be funny if this twink guy actually did pick
- 22:47all twelve games. Wood don't be adult, le Roy. I've been watching
- 22:49them. He just give Cleon on a high sign. Hey, that's the
- 22:53end of the game. They were supposed to get back here by exit number
- 22:56four and Cleol passes. I look, there's something funny here. What Cleo.
- 23:00I've been watching her. She just walked down at exit number seven and
- 23:03look Trent and a girl ahead in this wife? You think could he maybe
- 23:10have picked all twelve games? I don't know. All I know is he's
- 23:12a very clever guy with his hands and hold on to that envelope, pelly
- 23:18tight. You mean to say you picked all twelve games? Trent? What?
- 23:30Oh well, I haven't the faintest idea. Mister buff will have to
- 23:33check. You mean to say you don't even know what games you picked or
- 23:37what teams? Nope, that isn't important in my system, the Trent system,
- 23:42But it always works, so there's not much point in worrying. Isn't
- 23:45he the winner's here? Not on this card? Pretty fancy, I'll print
- 23:52it up. You send those cards around to the places that sell the pool
- 23:56tickets for you. I suppose yes. I believe in running a business,
- 23:59and a business basis will be very busy the rest of the evening getting money
- 24:03around to the various spots. So if you hurry, here's the envelope.
- 24:07Boss, it ain't left our site and neater honest, just a minute.
- 24:11I love the envelope. If you don't mind. I don't trust mister Buff.
- 24:15Why I'm not at all sure i'd trust you with this ticket, mister
- 24:18Buff, watch the guy, boss. Let's see. First game, okay,
- 24:27second game, yes, third okay? Four? Five, five,
- 24:34right, sixth, wonderful seven? Listen. Just let me take that ticket
- 24:40and let you tear it up. Got a chance. But the games are
- 24:44all checked, right, all twelve of them. Yeah, isn't that right?
- 24:48Boys, I'll be dog gone, Yes, sir, every single one
- 24:53of them. Mike, your marvelous. I told you what an amazing system
- 24:59it was, mister Buff. Don't do you wish that you'd believe me?
- 25:00I hope you have fifty thousand dollars here, mister Buff, and I'd prefer
- 25:04cash. No, listen, Trent, there's something extremely fishy about this.
- 25:11That Comet game. The Comets were twenty point favorites to win, sure things,
- 25:17and they lost, and you picked their opponents. I guess I was
- 25:21lucky that goes beyond luck, Trent, you mean it wasn't luck that they
- 25:23lost. That's exactly what I mean. They're at least twenty points better than
- 25:29just see Boss Marty and Leroy. They tricked you, They sold you out.
- 25:33I know I can prove it. Why you're a dirty little rout.
- 25:36We saw him out. Huh, Yes, you sold him out like that.
- 25:38We sold the boss at her trying to get us the double crosses Ryan
- 25:42to you are grated a dirty loadown. So this is the frame huh,
- 25:47clil, you got your nerd talking about frame ups. Don't you think I
- 25:51saw Trent signally the switch envelope. We didn't do any such thing. Why
- 25:53you you must think I'm an idiot high line up the deal and then you
- 25:57squeeze me out. This is all very interesting and enlightening. You ain't putting
- 26:02yourself in a very good spot. Clear with that kind of talk. You
- 26:04admitting you tried to frame the boss and admitting we wasn't in it with you.
- 26:07I'll admit a lot more too. Smart boy, you think I don't
- 26:11know what's going on around here, don't shout at me. I'm true with
- 26:15you anyway. I may be a crook, But I'm no murderer. That's
- 26:18curless talk. Baby. You think I don't know about Leroy picking up the
- 26:22gun and Marty waiting for him in a car out, You didn't know.
- 26:26I listened in and heard him report that to you, did your boss?
- 26:29Well? I did, and I remember every word I heard. And if
- 26:30you guys think you're gonna shove me around, they won't. Cleo, don't
- 26:34worry. But she should be worrying, mister Trent. Such vindictive slander,
- 26:38slander. I know which gun it was, even and I know where it's
- 26:41hit too. And if you think I'm blushing, come back here, Cleo.
- 26:45All right, Lucky, you're a bad shot. I killed me.
- 26:52Give me a gun, quick horse while LeRoy's holding the dame. All right,
- 26:56smarty here. I wouldn't marty this gun. I just went out and
- 27:00found knows how to kill people. Now drop it. Well when you put
- 27:07it that way, match, thanks clear. He said all right for me
- 27:14to pick up the gun, and just dropped Yeah. Sure, nah,
- 27:18I'll have that fifty thousand dollars if you don't mind. Mister buff you said
- 27:22you had a good deal of cash here, Well not that much, but
- 27:26you can take what there is here, I'll pay you the rest. Well,
- 27:30that's real big of you, mister Buff. Thanks, of course you
- 27:33won't be needing money where you're going. You'd be a sap to give.
- 27:37Leroy and Mardy they're cut mister, Well they don't have any clioh. I
- 27:40picked the winners. You couldn't have, you know, Buff, When you
- 27:44admitted you'd cheated, that one of those games was fixed, you made me
- 27:48feel a lot less uncomfortable about my pool ticket. What you see, I
- 27:52hadn't picked a single game, Buff, I hadn't even tried until I took
- 27:56the pool ticket out of that envelope. You see, the card was blank.
- 28:00I don't blow it. Games are old, Chuck. Yeah. Sure.
- 28:06I used to do a trick Leroy that laid him in the aisles in
- 28:08Peoria, and a mind reading trick. And to do that trick, I
- 28:12used to wedge a little piece of lead under my thumb. I got so
- 28:15I could write fairly well with my thumb. All I had to do on
- 28:19this pool ticket was make check marks right while you were looking on the back
- 28:25of the ticket. Oh, Michael, what'll we do with all this money?
- 28:27Well, we'll fill up that suit case and send it back to mister
- 28:32Buff in care of singsing you contemptible cook. That's praise from an expert,
- 28:37mister Buff, I am flattered. That's your fault. Present. I told
- 28:41you the guy was clever with his hands, and here he is for a
- 28:57last word that incomparable exposure of fakes. Mike Trent, thank you. Beating
- 29:03the basketball pools is a hopeless proposition. The odds are stacked so heavily against
- 29:08you that you can't hope to win over any period of time. And every
- 29:12time you participate in the pool you're undermining a great American sport, because when
- 29:18gamblers get into athletics, they just cease to be sport. Next week,
- 29:25I'm going to bring you a story of the fixed roulette game racket, same
- 29:27time, same station. I hope you'll be back with us until then.
- 29:30This is Mike Trent signing off with the thought that if money were really as
- 29:33easy as racketeers say it is, it wouldn't work so hard to take it
- 29:37away from you. Remember, there's no such thing as easy money. You've
- 29:55just heard another program in the NBC series Easy Money transc I have to expose
- 30:00the inside secrets of gamblers, racketeers, and con men. Next week,
- 30:04Mike Trent has an amazing story of how the fixed roulette wheels operate same time,
- 30:10same station. Featured in Tonight's cast were Larry Haynes as Mike Trent,
- 30:14Joan Allison, Rita Lynn, Ralph Camargo, and Sid Paul. Easy Money
- 30:18is produced and directed by Blair Wallaser in association with Air Shows Incorporated. Script
- 30:25by George B. Anderson. This has been an NBC Radio Network presentation,
- 30:30and this is Roger Bowman. Join your favorite couple, Fibamagee and Molly tonight
- 30:48on the NBC Radio Network Welcome Back. Probably the one thing that makes this
- 30:56series so unique is how Mike Trent beats the criminals at their own game.
- 31:03He's definitely a different sort of detective figure, both with the magic background,
- 31:10which is pretty intriguing, and just the way he operates. It's very smooth,
- 31:15and Larry Haynes is just fantastic in this and really just takes all the
- 31:21things I really enjoyed about his work as Lieutenant Brooks on the Amazing Mister Malone
- 31:27and takes it to the next level here. So I hope you've been enjoying
- 31:30this. We'll be back next week with one more episode of Easy Money,
- 31:34and then on Wednesday. Be sure and listen for the adventures of Philip Marlowe
- 31:40in the meantime. Sender comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net,
