- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads that
- 0:08shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company and Neuralink.
- 0:13I'm your host Will Walden Space XS Starship rocket launched
- 0:17successfully from Starbase in Texas.
- 0:20This marks the 4th test flight aimed at missions to the Moon
- 0:25and to Mars in the future. This rocket is 400 feet tall and
- 0:29it flew over the Gulf of Mexico. It achieved a controlled
- 0:32splashdown. This marks the longest and most
- 0:35successful flight for Starship to date.
- 0:38Now, another thing that happened which was very cool is Spacex's
- 0:42Super Heavy booster did a soft landing successfully in the Gulf
- 0:47of Mexico, which is an important milestone for the company.
- 0:50Now, the Starship, known as the most powerful launch vehicle
- 0:53ever built, completed its fourth test flight with a successful
- 0:57landing, burn, and splashdown by the booster.
- 1:00This flight received approval from the FAA and included
- 1:03upgrades and software changes to enhance performance.
- 1:06Now, despite some of these challenges in the Starship
- 1:09lineup, the flight was successful, showcasing the
- 1:12rocket's resilience and the potential for future space
- 1:15exploration to the moon and beyond.
- 1:18Now for the first time, both elements of the nearly 400 foot
- 1:21tall rocket launched successfully from Spacex's
- 1:24Starbase facility near Brownsville, TX and return to
- 1:27Earth for controlled splashdowns at sea.
- 1:31This demonstration paves the way for future Starship test
- 1:34flights. They'll bring the booster and
- 1:36eventually the upper stage back to land at Starbase for rapid
- 1:41reusability. Now the two stage rocket took
- 1:43off from Starbase it's 7:50 AM CDT and headed E over the Gulf
- 1:48of Mexico with more than £15,000,000 of thrust, roughly
- 1:52twice the power of NASA's Saturn 5 rocket from the Apollo lunar
- 1:56program of the 1960s and 70s. And the success of the flight is
- 2:00crucial for SpaceX as it aims to develop a fully reusable
- 2:04transportation system for crew and cargo to Earth orbit the
- 2:08Moon, to Mars, and into the outer solar system.
- 2:11Now, NASA also has a significant interest in Starship success
- 2:14because the agency selected it to serve as a human rated lunar
- 2:19Lander for the Artemis program, which aims to ferry astronauts
- 2:22to and from the surface of the moon.
- 2:25However, dozens more Starship flights will be necessary before
- 2:28it can carry astronauts, likely not before the latter part of
- 2:31this decade. Now the 4th flight of Starship
- 2:35made major strides to bring us closer to a rapidly reusable
- 2:39future, said SpaceX on its website.
- 2:43Also said its accomplishments will provide data to drive
- 2:46improvements as we continue rapidly developing Starship into
- 2:49a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry crew
- 2:53and cargo to Earth orbit the Moon, Mars and beyond.
- 2:56Now this flight was the 4th launch of a full size Starship
- 3:00rocket and was the first to end with the booster in the ship
- 3:03reaching Earth's surface in one piece.
- 3:05While it wasn't perfect, the flight success cannot be
- 3:08overstated. The payload for this test was
- 3:10the data says SpaceX in Starship delivered.
- 3:14The launch involved two of the 33 methane fueled Raptor engines
- 3:19of the Super Heavy booster, failing one on ascent and 1:00
- 3:22during the boosters final breaking burn just before
- 3:25splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.
- 3:26And despite these failures, the remaining engines guided the
- 3:30booster to a gentle splashdown after a vertical descent just
- 3:34off the coast of Starbase about 7 1/2 minutes after liftoff.
- 3:39Engineers identified a filter blockage in the lines feeding
- 3:42liquid oxygen propellant into the Raptor engines as the cause
- 3:46of the landing failure in March. However, this did not appear to
- 3:50be a significant issue. On Thursday, SpaceX also made
- 3:53another change to the booster descent by jettisoning the
- 3:55Rockets hot staging ring where the Starship's upper stage
- 3:59attaches to the Super Heavy booster for launch.
- 4:01The Starship's upper stages 6 Raptor engines burned a few
- 4:05seconds longer than planned to compensate for the boosters
- 4:07performance shortfall. This adjustment put the ship on
- 4:10the proper suborbital trajectory, reaching a peak
- 4:13altitude of 132 miles before Earth's gravity pulled the 160
- 4:18foot long vehicle back into the atmosphere around 47 minutes
- 4:22after launch. During Spacex's third Starship
- 4:26test flight in March, the scorching heat of re entry
- 4:28destroyed the rocket as it descended into the upper asses
- 4:32here over the Indian Ocean. Clogged thrusters caused the
- 4:35ship to lose control of its orientation, leading to its
- 4:38destruction, but this time, Starship maintained control
- 4:42throughout the flight. Dazzling live views from cameras
- 4:45aboard the rocket, relayed to the ground through Spacex's
- 4:48Starlink broadband network, showed purple and orange plasma
- 4:51pouring over the vehicle as it glided through the atmosphere
- 4:54over the Indian Ocean. And although some ceramic
- 4:57thermal protection tiles peeled away, the damage control flap
- 5:00still functioned, allowing the vehicle to maintain control
- 5:04during re entry. Starship made a controlled re
- 5:07entry, successfully making it through the phases of peak
- 5:10heating and Max aerodynamic pressure, and demonstrating the
- 5:14ability to control the vehicle using its flaps while descending
- 5:17through the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds.
- 5:20These were mission objectives as outlined by Elon Musk before the
- 5:25launch. Finally, three of the Raptor
- 5:27engines on Starship reignited, flipping the rocket from a belly
- 5:31down orientation to a vertical position a few 100 feet above
- 5:35the Indian Ocean. Despite these challenges, the
- 5:37rocket managed a soft landing in the ocean.
- 5:40And despite loss of many tiles at a damage flap, Starship made
- 5:44it all the way to a soft landing in the ocean.
- 5:47Congratulations to SpaceX on an epic achievement.
- 5:51Now SpaceX employees celebrated at the company's headquarters in
- 5:54Hawthorne, CA. It was a little bit of use your
- 5:57imagination as you were going down with what we could actually
- 6:00see, but we were able to hear the ship do its landing burn,
- 6:04said a spokesperson for SpaceX during the flight.
- 6:07And Starship made it through re entry and did its first ever
- 6:10landing burn from South Texas to the other side of the Earth.
- 6:13Starship is in the water. SpaceX engineers were
- 6:17particularly interested in observing Starship's heat shield
- 6:20performance during Thursday's flight.
- 6:22The thermal barrier consists of around 18,000 hexagonal ceramic
- 6:27tiles, similar to those used on NASA space shuttle temperatures
- 6:31during re entry can reach 2600 Fahrenheit.
- 6:35Now that's hot enough to melt aluminum, a metal commonly used
- 6:39in launch vehicles. Engineers selected a stainless
- 6:42steel alloy for Starship's primary construction.
- 6:45This material, though heavier than aluminum or carbon fiber,
- 6:48is strong at cryogenic temperatures, an important
- 6:51characteristic because Starship consumes methane and liquid
- 6:55oxygen chilled to several 100° below 0.
- 6:58Stainless steel also has a higher melting temperature than
- 7:01other materials commonly used in rockets.
- 7:05For a reusable ship, you're coming in like a meteor.
- 7:08You want something that does not melt at a low temperature.
- 7:11You want something that melts at a high temperature.
- 7:13And this is where steel is extremely good as well.
- 7:16Now looking ahead, the 5th test flight of Starship could occur
- 7:19within a couple of months. The FAA ordered mishap
- 7:22investigations following the 1st 3 Starship launches, but this
- 7:26likely won't be necessary this time.
- 7:28SpaceX has already test fired the ship for the next flight,
- 7:31and the booster could be hot fired soon.
- 7:33The successful soft splashdown of a Super Heavy booster in the
- 7:36Gulf of Mexico has made Musk confident enough to aim for an
- 7:40onshore landing next time, he said.
- 7:42I think we should try to catch the booster with the Mechazilla
- 7:45arms next flight. We'll see how that works out.
- 7:49Other priorities for the next phase of Starship testing
- 7:52include demonstrating the ability to restart a Raptor
- 7:54engine in space. This capability is crucial for
- 7:57putting Starship into a stable low Earth orbit and guiding it
- 8:01back for reentry. Now, once in orbit, Starship
- 8:03could deploy Starlink Internet satellites and perform refueling
- 8:07tests necessary for SpaceX to fulfill NASA's lunar Lander
- 8:11contract. Now, SpaceX may also make
- 8:14changes to the Starship heat shield to address the loss of
- 8:17tiles encountered on Flight 4. Engineers will investigate the
- 8:21reasons behind the two Raptor engine failures during the
- 8:24launch and landing of the booster, aiming to refine the
- 8:27design and improve future flights reliability.
