- 0:02Speaker 1: Some of the content of Patriots Unfiltered may not be
- 0:04Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised. Welcome to
- 0:11Speaker 1: Patriot's Unfiltered. There's a guy that you and I did
- 0:15Speaker 1: really disagree with. Yeah, you don't have to put that
- 0:17Speaker 1: look on your face. This is what the show was
- 0:19Speaker 1: all about, all right, conflict, let's do it. Whyst year
- 0:21Speaker 1: we couldn't force a punt. This year, we're not gonna
- 0:23Speaker 1: get a first down. I don't know how high I am.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I think I know what I say. I'm pretty high.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Vatrian move. She walks in with a Chick fil At
- 0:31Speaker 1: sandwich bag. Smara looks like you saw Alex had grabbed
- 0:34Speaker 1: Chick fil At and then you were like, I gotta
- 0:37Speaker 1: go get that. Would you do that? Did you see
- 0:39Speaker 1: that sandwich? And that's an even more veteran move, so
- 0:43Speaker 1: ridiculously proud. Yeahfball, softballs. But it's like every time I
- 0:49Speaker 1: talk about games coming up the season, it's like I
- 0:52Speaker 1: have like these flashes in my brain of like Justin Jefferson,
- 0:55Speaker 1: he won't play that. It's the first time you ever
- 0:57Speaker 1: Colvin Cook, him and Felin will both be questionable throughout
- 1:01Speaker 1: the weekend. Neither one will play. It took me two shows.
- 1:07Speaker 1: This is Patriot's Unfiltered, fueled by Duncan. All right, welcome
- 1:13Speaker 1: the Patriots Unfiltered. I'm back. Yeah, it is Tuesday here
- 1:19Speaker 1: at Gillette Stadium. Just got back from practice. That's why
- 1:22Speaker 1: we're starting at two o'clock instead of noon. But it's
- 1:26Speaker 1: hot out there. It's steamy, and the Patriots moved their
- 1:29Speaker 1: practice from nine thirty to four o'clock back to noon
- 1:33Speaker 1: because of some expected thunderstorms later today. Yeah, it seems
- 1:37Speaker 1: like it's still going to I just see a tweet
- 1:38Speaker 1: that Parker just caught a bomb from Mac Jones, but
- 1:40Speaker 1: I guess we'll wait to see exactly what that is.
- 1:43Speaker 1: So there, they're still going a little bit. Yeah, so
- 1:45Speaker 1: Evan will be joining us a little later and I
- 1:47Speaker 1: can have the Alex and you know who else rotating cast.
- 1:51Speaker 1: We'll see, but we're gonna talk about what we've seen
- 1:55Speaker 1: so far. We've got two more days until the Patriots
- 1:58Speaker 1: first preseason game. It's the Giants Thursday night, so this
- 2:03Speaker 1: will be the last practice that we see until next
- 2:06Speaker 1: week when the Panthers come to town and there's some
- 2:09Speaker 1: joint practices. So, but first to first, um, it's Mike,
- 2:14Speaker 1: it's Mike, or Deuce, it's Paul, it's me, It's Matt.
- 2:17Speaker 1: The booth, Fiat five D, a stick and hutline web
- 2:21Speaker 1: radio at patrios dot com. It's the email address. Christian
- 2:25Speaker 1: Barmore got into a little thing today. Well, David Andrews
- 2:27Speaker 1: twice too. I think he had a little bit of
- 2:29Speaker 1: a scuffle on the other field and then blew up
- 2:32Speaker 1: later in practice. Both were ejected. David Andrews went over
- 2:35Speaker 1: to the hill to look like he did some solo
- 2:38Speaker 1: conditioning work. But I mean I liked it. I think,
- 2:41Speaker 1: you know, these things canna be a little bit overrated
- 2:43Speaker 1: of you know, David Andrews talked yesterday, had huddled the
- 2:46Speaker 1: team up, was clearly upset with how things were going,
- 2:49Speaker 1: and you know, brought some thunder today and some anger
- 2:52Speaker 1: to what he was doing. So I like that. But
- 2:54Speaker 1: you ultimately, it's got to translate onto the field, and
- 2:56Speaker 1: I do think that they were a little bit better today.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Felt like it was not quite as competitive and any
- 3:02Speaker 1: there was never any full field music, playing full physicality.
- 3:07Speaker 1: But overall, I thought, you know, at least in the
- 3:09Speaker 1: run game, it seemed like a little bit more in sync.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Seemed like there were some holes. There were some plays
- 3:13Speaker 1: that hey, Stevenson would have had a pretty good carry there,
- 3:16Speaker 1: or Damian Harris, even Ty Montgomery would have had some
- 3:18Speaker 1: good gains. So some good things. So I think we'll hear,
- 3:21Speaker 1: you know, when Evan gets in here, what happened exactly
- 3:23Speaker 1: at the end of practice and who talked and what
- 3:26Speaker 1: the reaction was to the fight. But I like it.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I like selling some fire. I mean, a guy who
- 3:31Speaker 1: rarely criticizes unless he really really means it, and then
- 3:35Speaker 1: even when he does, he does it in a very
- 3:37Speaker 1: level handed way. Mike Reese had some things to say
- 3:41Speaker 1: about the offensive line yesterday about maybe they should bring
- 3:44Speaker 1: back Dante Scarneki I for some one on one. You know,
- 3:47Speaker 1: when Mike is saying it, you know, things don't look right. Yeah,
- 3:52Speaker 1: I think the offensive line was kind of the buzz
- 3:54Speaker 1: word yesterday of that's what's wrong. But I mean, I
- 3:57Speaker 1: think it's overall been a rotation of what you want
- 4:00Speaker 1: to blame on a particular day. Early on it was oh,
- 4:03Speaker 1: guys aren't getting open. Then it was al Mac looks
- 4:04Speaker 1: like he's uncomfortable and isn't reading it right. Now it's
- 4:07Speaker 1: you know, the offensive line hasn't given him time even
- 4:09Speaker 1: to get it right. So we'll see how it looks
- 4:12Speaker 1: on Thursday night, and we'll overreact to that, of course.
- 4:15Speaker 1: But I mean, I think they showed a little bit
- 4:17Speaker 1: of progress today and that's a little bit encouraging. But
- 4:20Speaker 1: you know, not gonna lie. It's it's been disappointing through
- 4:23Speaker 1: eleven practices over all, the passing offense just you know,
- 4:26Speaker 1: hasn't been consistently good. Here Bill Belichick talk about stacking days.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I don't think they've stacked any days just yet. Yeah,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I mean, you know, we're still in the midst of
- 4:36Speaker 1: this new offense, and you know, my question is why
- 4:41Speaker 1: are they making the change? You know? And it could
- 4:43Speaker 1: be I saw a rumor just yesterday. I think it
- 4:47Speaker 1: was Greg Badard, one of Paul's guys, who started spreading it,
- 4:51Speaker 1: saying that Bill has always wanted to change the offense,
- 4:55Speaker 1: but guys like Fears and Scarnekia and Josh McDaniels pushed
- 4:59Speaker 1: against And now that they're gone, Bill's free to do that.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Do you buy that? No? And no, Well it was
- 5:08Speaker 1: summarily dismissed by Dante Scarnekiah. Yeah. So he was asked
- 5:12Speaker 1: about it by Karen Griigian today and a piece that
- 5:14Speaker 1: she wrote, you know, a larger piece about the struggles
- 5:18Speaker 1: of the offense and the changes to to wide gaps
- 5:21Speaker 1: and zones and as opposed to the gap runs on
- 5:24Speaker 1: the inside the wide zones on the outside. But she
- 5:28Speaker 1: asked him about it, and he said, no, that that
- 5:31Speaker 1: that never was. But Dard just made that up. I
- 5:35Speaker 1: have no idea. I mean, that's kind of I mean,
- 5:38Speaker 1: my guess is someone told him that he doesn't mean it,
- 5:41Speaker 1: you know, it's made up. Well, I mean it's I
- 5:44Speaker 1: just don't think there's any truth to it, um. And
- 5:47Speaker 1: I just think that the offense was extremely successful for
- 5:52Speaker 1: over twenty years. Like, I don't really see the need
- 5:57Speaker 1: to change unless you have to, right, And I think
- 6:00Speaker 1: when you have to do is when you as Bill
- 6:02Speaker 1: said before, I think during mini camp, when you lose
- 6:05Speaker 1: four guys off your coaching staff and you don't really
- 6:08Speaker 1: have the experience with the previous system in place. But
- 6:13Speaker 1: so now you don't have an experience with this system either.
- 6:17Speaker 1: But I think that they feel like there's more of
- 6:19Speaker 1: these teams doing this this way now. I think this
- 6:22Speaker 1: is easier. And I think that that's part of the
- 6:25Speaker 1: reason why you know that they made a change. If
- 6:27Speaker 1: we're going to learn something, as we'll learn something that's
- 6:29Speaker 1: a little bit more adaptable. This is just like who knows, right,
- 6:33Speaker 1: it's pure Bill's the only one who knows for sure
- 6:36Speaker 1: how much has changed, why it's changing, and when it
- 6:39Speaker 1: was changed, and if you ever wanted it to change,
- 6:41Speaker 1: right Like, Bill's the only guy that knows any of
- 6:43Speaker 1: those answers. Right to change is a lot of changes. Yeah,
- 6:46Speaker 1: But but I agree with Mike. I thought today, um
- 6:49Speaker 1: running the ball, there was there was sometimes as there's
- 6:52Speaker 1: a whole up, there's a little crease, the little toss cracked,
- 6:55Speaker 1: you know, uh, you know, you get you know the whole,
- 6:58Speaker 1: you know, sticky foot in the ground, make one cut,
- 6:59Speaker 1: get up field. You saw that today. I thought Stevenson
- 7:02Speaker 1: looked like he was the guy getting and I think
- 7:04Speaker 1: Montgomery had one late too, But Stevenson to me looked
- 7:07Speaker 1: like he was shooting through some some creases in the line.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And I thought Cole Strange in particular, you know, paved
- 7:13Speaker 1: the way for a couple of those games. Today. Were
- 7:15Speaker 1: they still doing the Shanahan offense today because it looked
- 7:18Speaker 1: like yesterday. Yeah, there was some there was some wide
- 7:21Speaker 1: zone stuff. Um, you know, I just didn't feel like
- 7:25Speaker 1: they had to do something when Josh Dthaniels left, Like
- 7:28Speaker 1: you have to do something. And I'm not saying that
- 7:30Speaker 1: the option they picked or the one I would have picked.
- 7:33Speaker 1: But if you had brought in Adam Gasee and let
- 7:36Speaker 1: him install his offense, you would that would that make
- 7:38Speaker 1: people feel better? I don't know, like and would it
- 7:41Speaker 1: go smoother? I don't know. Is Bill Belichick invested in that.
- 7:44Speaker 1: It's just that's just where you live right now. Of
- 7:46Speaker 1: of that offense got to be so complex that could
- 7:50Speaker 1: anyone realistically have taken that and just kind of we're
- 7:54Speaker 1: just gonna keep rolling what we have. No one here.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I mean, Mick Lombardi maybe could have, but he went
- 7:58Speaker 1: with him. You know, I know people want Nick Kaylee
- 8:01Speaker 1: to be that guy. I just don't know the something
- 8:04Speaker 1: had to happen with how long Josh had been here
- 8:06Speaker 1: and how embedded in that offense it was. And again
- 8:10Speaker 1: I'm not saying that they're making the right decision. To me,
- 8:12Speaker 1: right now, it seems like like more than ever, it's
- 8:14Speaker 1: it's not really the right decision. We'll see how it
- 8:16Speaker 1: looks eventually, but something had to change, and I don't
- 8:19Speaker 1: know what the right answer was. I mean, maybe the
- 8:21Speaker 1: right answer goes back to they should have been planning
- 8:23Speaker 1: for this. They should have maybe just ripped the band
- 8:25Speaker 1: aid off when Cam Newton came here and said, you
- 8:27Speaker 1: know what, let's do it now and reset the offense overall,
- 8:31Speaker 1: so that when we have a new quarterback come in,
- 8:33Speaker 1: we have younger coaches who can kind of teach it.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I just don't know if anyone could have done this
- 8:37Speaker 1: other than Josh, you know. So Cam Newton comes in, right,
- 8:42Speaker 1: and I'm not saying that they revamped the offense, but
- 8:45Speaker 1: they definitely tailored some of his quarterback keepers and creepy
- 8:49Speaker 1: draws stopped them from being successful. Was Cam Newton, you know,
- 8:53Speaker 1: who was saying it was like calculus, you know, but
- 8:56Speaker 1: like I know, he was physically like the scheme wasn't.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I'm like with him, I get it. I don't know,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I like but again, you know, like I don't want
- 9:04Speaker 1: to be like mister wise guy. But we're talking about
- 9:06Speaker 1: football here, right, Yeah. I don't really think the struggles
- 9:10Speaker 1: have a lot to do with schemes. I just don't. Yeah,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and now I again, I'm gonna stayed up front that
- 9:15Speaker 1: I don't know the exos and knows that I watch football,
- 9:18Speaker 1: I don't coach it. But I just see a lot
- 9:22Speaker 1: of guys missing blocks. Um, you know, passes that aren't
- 9:29Speaker 1: coming out when they're supposed to. Guy's not always getting
- 9:32Speaker 1: open when they're supposed to. Now, maybe that's all scheme related.
- 9:36Speaker 1: For all I know, it's all scheme related, but it
- 9:39Speaker 1: does I go to you a point like if I'm
- 9:41Speaker 1: supposed to run an out on this play and I'm
- 9:44Speaker 1: not getting open, what does that have to do with
- 9:45Speaker 1: the scheme? Right? And if if I'm supposed to throw
- 9:49Speaker 1: it to a guy twelve yards out and then and
- 9:53Speaker 1: then I don't throw it as you might have to
- 9:55Speaker 1: do with the scheme, right, Because that's what I see
- 9:58Speaker 1: more than than than anything else. Like yesterday, you know,
- 10:00Speaker 1: I watched for a while and you know, guys were
- 10:03Speaker 1: making cuts and on their break they were open and
- 10:06Speaker 1: the ball wasn't delivered, and then it would be there
- 10:08Speaker 1: a second later and the guy the defender had a
- 10:11Speaker 1: chance to catch up a little bit. I mean, that's
- 10:13Speaker 1: that's timing. And I do think today, and we're starting
- 10:16Speaker 1: to see some tweets come in. I think Mike and
- 10:19Speaker 1: I are sort of in line with what some people
- 10:21Speaker 1: were starting to tweet one of their better days. There
- 10:24Speaker 1: were some signs of life, nothing to write home about,
- 10:26Speaker 1: but better is today? Is there any chance I know,
- 10:29Speaker 1: I know this seems like kind of weird, but is
- 10:33Speaker 1: there any chance that up to like today, the defensive
- 10:35Speaker 1: line was playing at one speed and the offensive line
- 10:38Speaker 1: was playing in another. I mean to look like it
- 10:40Speaker 1: because because maybe you know, they were thinking a little
- 10:43Speaker 1: bit about the new things or whatever, and defense was
- 10:46Speaker 1: just getting after it. I think so, I mean, it's
- 10:49Speaker 1: I mean, I think it's what everybody's asking themselves right now,
- 10:51Speaker 1: is you know, what's what's leeway to make a change
- 10:55Speaker 1: and to have a new scheme. I mean, I thought
- 10:56Speaker 1: I thought that Jacoby Myers quote that that she already
- 10:59Speaker 1: got on the night in stadium practice, where you know,
- 11:01Speaker 1: I think the change in perfection are a hard mix.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Like I think that that was some of the most
- 11:06Speaker 1: insightful kind of comments we've gotten about this whole thing.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I just at some point it has to start working,
- 11:13Speaker 1: and you're giving them a little bit of leeway, and
- 11:16Speaker 1: of course it might not look exactly right. Maybe today
- 11:19Speaker 1: was a turning point. I don't know. I mean, I
- 11:21Speaker 1: think we're gonna have to wait till we get on
- 11:22Speaker 1: the field against the Panthers and see to your point,
- 11:25Speaker 1: going up against the defense that is new and isn't
- 11:28Speaker 1: quite sure what they're going up against, and you know,
- 11:30Speaker 1: I think then it's a little bit easier to make
- 11:32Speaker 1: some judgments. But even then, if they come out and
- 11:35Speaker 1: they go right down the field and the Panthers, it's
- 11:37Speaker 1: still got to get to like NFL regular season action.
- 11:41Speaker 1: You know, No, you're right, and obviously you can make
- 11:44Speaker 1: no judgments based on that. But at least to Paul's point,
- 11:48Speaker 1: somebody ran a good route and caught the ball, you know. Yeah,
- 11:52Speaker 1: so like let's see that, and that was let's take
- 11:55Speaker 1: that step. That was a lot of Bills points. And
- 11:56Speaker 1: I just want to wait to see what happens in
- 11:58Speaker 1: the season. I don't care what happens joint practices. I
- 12:01Speaker 1: don't care what happens in preseason. I wanted to look better, obvious, Yeah,
- 12:05Speaker 1: but when when they start playing games, if they're productive,
- 12:09Speaker 1: they're productive. I don't care what system they use, right,
- 12:11Speaker 1: like that. That's like they were productive for twenty plus
- 12:15Speaker 1: years now, the last couple they've been just okay. You know,
- 12:19Speaker 1: in the Cam Newton year was less than okay, right,
- 12:22Speaker 1: they were okay last year. So if they can improve
- 12:25Speaker 1: on that production, I don't care what scheme they use.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I don't I don't care either. I don't care either.
- 12:30Speaker 1: It's just it's it's been frustrating to watch, and it's
- 12:32Speaker 1: been frustrating for the players, and you can see the frustration,
- 12:35Speaker 1: and you know, I just don't want to paint the
- 12:38Speaker 1: picture of Oh, the media is just overreacting, like like
- 12:40Speaker 1: you can feel it, like these practices do not look
- 12:42Speaker 1: like the practice were used to see. They look like
- 12:45Speaker 1: my stupid practices in high school where we could barely
- 12:47Speaker 1: do anything. So I think we've seen a little bit
- 12:50Speaker 1: of progression. I think next week though, in the joints,
- 12:53Speaker 1: and then when you get out to Vegas, especially with
- 12:56Speaker 1: Josh kind of knowing them a little bit, and probably
- 12:58Speaker 1: the Raiders would be a little bit more prepared than
- 13:00Speaker 1: maybe certain preseason teams might be in those kind of situations. Perhaps,
- 13:04Speaker 1: but I'm excited to see those competitive periods, even more
- 13:08Speaker 1: so for the defense too. To see if the defense really,
- 13:11Speaker 1: you know, throw something. I know Baker Mayfields I have
- 13:13Speaker 1: been reading doing pretty well down there in Carolina. So
- 13:15Speaker 1: you know, you got two quarterbacks who are in a competition,
- 13:17Speaker 1: who are going to want to produce and to play well.
- 13:20Speaker 1: So let's see how that looks against the defense. Let's see.
- 13:22Speaker 1: You know, I'm not as much as I'm not ready
- 13:24Speaker 1: to panic on the defense, I'm not ready to start
- 13:27Speaker 1: blowing the trumpet for this defense that you know, before
- 13:29Speaker 1: going into a fred you and I were were more
- 13:31Speaker 1: concerned about that side of the ball, and you know,
- 13:33Speaker 1: to be honest, I still I still might be. I'm
- 13:35Speaker 1: not even ready yet to be like, you know, I
- 13:37Speaker 1: need to see this against amazing offenses that they're about.
- 13:40Speaker 1: You have no idea, you know, like what you're looking
- 13:42Speaker 1: at right now? Is the defense good and the offense bad?
- 13:46Speaker 1: I mean I think you can. You can certainly say
- 13:48Speaker 1: that Barmore has been good. I think Godshaw has been good.
- 13:52Speaker 1: I think Jude, when you see them one on one,
- 13:55Speaker 1: right and just generally when they do the eleven on eleven,
- 13:57Speaker 1: it's like woof, they're in the backfield quick. Yeah, um,
- 14:00Speaker 1: you know, but but after that, I also say the
- 14:02Speaker 1: same for Taekwon Thorne. On the other side, guys that,
- 14:04Speaker 1: regardless of how the overall practices have gone, look like
- 14:08Speaker 1: they're getting it. They're making plays and say they look
- 14:11Speaker 1: a little bit more involved than they were the previous
- 14:13Speaker 1: they're doing so. So speaking of Barber, what was the
- 14:15Speaker 1: thing with him today? Was he? I don't I'm reading
- 14:19Speaker 1: it now that he left the field. Yeah, he left
- 14:21Speaker 1: the field one of the training can't to the training room.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I shouldn't the training in the locker room? Was he? No? No,
- 14:27Speaker 1: I think that was the time guys got thrown out.
- 14:29Speaker 1: But I am seeing you can't fight, no fighting, no
- 14:32Speaker 1: fighting Anders. Yeah. Bill Andrews did come back and break
- 14:36Speaker 1: down the offensive huddle though. So who were the two
- 14:39Speaker 1: guys the other night that in the in stadium practice
- 14:42Speaker 1: that he sent off? Oh that was Ouch and Harn
- 14:45Speaker 1: I think, yeah, so they just got sent off. He's
- 14:49Speaker 1: pretty consistent with that. You're getting a fighting on the
- 14:51Speaker 1: training camp field, You're gone. Yeah. Yeah, But I like,
- 14:56Speaker 1: you know, I like what Andrews did, Like, I don't
- 14:58Speaker 1: want to overstate it. I think my I said it
- 15:00Speaker 1: really well earlier. I think that he had something to
- 15:04Speaker 1: say after practice yesterday. Clearly he didn't really want to
- 15:07Speaker 1: get into the specifics when he talked to us, but
- 15:09Speaker 1: his frustration was oozing when he spoke. And then he
- 15:13Speaker 1: went out today and I thought he had, you know,
- 15:14Speaker 1: probably a little extra be in his bonnet, yeah, you know,
- 15:18Speaker 1: And I thought he set the tone. I thought that.
- 15:19Speaker 1: I think that's what leaders do. And I don't think
- 15:22Speaker 1: it was like I don't think he went out there
- 15:24Speaker 1: to get in a fight, and I don't think it
- 15:26Speaker 1: was like a cheap shot or anything like that. But
- 15:27Speaker 1: he played probably a little harder in the practice setting
- 15:31Speaker 1: than what we've seen, and I think that's what leaders do.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Enough is enough. We're getting pushed around. We can't protect Mac.
- 15:38Speaker 1: I think Barmore got a little close to Mac on
- 15:40Speaker 1: that play, and that's probably what started it. I like
- 15:43Speaker 1: what Andrews did. I like his response. I did too,
- 15:46Speaker 1: especially for an offense that I feel like needs that.
- 15:48Speaker 1: You know, he lost Shack Mason, you lost Tuney, You've
- 15:51Speaker 1: lost some guys over the years that you know, I'd
- 15:53Speaker 1: just been here and had that continuity, and I don't
- 15:55Speaker 1: want to put it all on Mac to be the one,
- 15:57Speaker 1: you know all the time that that has to do it.
- 15:59Speaker 1: And I still think he's a young quarterback that's you know,
- 16:01Speaker 1: finding his leadership role in his voice, and certainly he's
- 16:04Speaker 1: been frustrated. So I like that from that aspect too,
- 16:07Speaker 1: of Andrew's kind of being one of those holdover guys
- 16:09Speaker 1: to step up and say this is unacceptable. So do
- 16:12Speaker 1: you think how much of a fact do you think
- 16:15Speaker 1: it is that your offensive line coach is also involved
- 16:18Speaker 1: in the overall running of the offense, and maybe they're
- 16:22Speaker 1: not getting the attention that they used to get, you know,
- 16:25Speaker 1: with Dante or even with Carmen Brisillo, and well, you know,
- 16:28Speaker 1: it's the fourth different coaching combination that they've had, you know,
- 16:32Speaker 1: and that's I think that that's significant. And it's probably
- 16:34Speaker 1: something that maybe I didn't think about as much of
- 16:36Speaker 1: because you never had to worry about the offensive line
- 16:39Speaker 1: playing hard when Dante was here, right, And it's this,
- 16:42Speaker 1: you know, I I don't know, I just think like
- 16:47Speaker 1: they need more of that. They need more of those
- 16:48Speaker 1: kind of guys to step up and be those kind
- 16:51Speaker 1: of players because they just, you know, it's a new
- 16:53Speaker 1: it's a new chemistry now on this team. And aside
- 16:56Speaker 1: from the new offense and all that kind of stuff.
- 16:58Speaker 1: I just think, now at this point, how many times
- 17:00Speaker 1: can you watch Matt Patricia run over to the to
- 17:03Speaker 1: Dante's inferno. He's working over there, and he comes running
- 17:05Speaker 1: back over here. It's just it's hard to say from
- 17:08Speaker 1: a management perspective that that's that's the best went back. No,
- 17:11Speaker 1: he was completely gone today, completely gone today. He was
- 17:15Speaker 1: the only one though, so uh so that's I thought
- 17:17Speaker 1: could could just did a nice job. Sot was in
- 17:20Speaker 1: there yesterday, I think really struggled with Judean, and I
- 17:23Speaker 1: think that was a big difference today. I didn't see
- 17:25Speaker 1: any of that immediate flashing pressure. Now. We talked about
- 17:29Speaker 1: the running game, the passing game. Still, to me, it
- 17:32Speaker 1: looked better today. Overall. I thought everything looked quote unquote
- 17:35Speaker 1: normal today, but a lot of quick short stuff like
- 17:38Speaker 1: not a lot of stuff where Mac is able to
- 17:40Speaker 1: sit back there and look down field and make a play.
- 17:43Speaker 1: But I thought the timing looked better, um you know,
- 17:48Speaker 1: just the rhythm, and I thought there was even some
- 17:50Speaker 1: drops today. I thought that, you know, production wise, it
- 17:52Speaker 1: could even been better. So let's let's, um my boy, Jacobe,
- 17:58Speaker 1: let's do a status check on the different units. Yeah,
- 18:01Speaker 1: wide receiver. You got Agalore Born h Parker, Myers, Thornton.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Those are five, right. What's Wilkerson? What's Trey Nixon doing?
- 18:16Speaker 1: Not much? Yeah, not much. I mean, I think Jacoby's
- 18:18Speaker 1: come on as of late. I thought he was a
- 18:20Speaker 1: little slow start the first few days, but Paul did
- 18:23Speaker 1: mention he had some drops stay. But I think he's
- 18:24Speaker 1: been consistent and you know, talk about the short passing stuff.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Burns continue to be kind of m ia. Not really
- 18:30Speaker 1: much from Kendrick Bourne in any aspect. I mean, I
- 18:34Speaker 1: don't know, maybe in the in stadium, might have got
- 18:36Speaker 1: a catch in the stadium, but in terms of competitive
- 18:38Speaker 1: stuff eleven on eleven, haven't really seen much of him.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Aglare I thought was good yesterday, looks good a one
- 18:43Speaker 1: on ones. I think Parker is what he is. He's
- 18:46Speaker 1: getting the red zone and you're going to throw up
- 18:48Speaker 1: a pass to him. Contested catch, That's what That's what
- 18:50Speaker 1: he does best. We've seen him catch a little bit
- 18:52Speaker 1: of other stuff, but I think overall that's his best place.
- 18:56Speaker 1: What's our possession receiver Myers Myers, Yeah, yeah, and then
- 19:00Speaker 1: and that's why I wondered if Bourne could maybe stick
- 19:03Speaker 1: on that a little bit or even Agalore. Maybe they
- 19:05Speaker 1: play him in the slot more. Not really, not really.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I saw a sequence yesterday. I think it was three
- 19:09Speaker 1: plays in a row. They went to Thornton. He caught
- 19:12Speaker 1: two of them in the one in the end zone
- 19:14Speaker 1: he couldn't come down with. Yeah, that was that was
- 19:16Speaker 1: late with the That was zappy that quarterback at the time. Yeah,
- 19:20Speaker 1: but those are I thought those were the two most
- 19:23Speaker 1: impressive reps that he's had in a row. He ran
- 19:25Speaker 1: Jack Jones off, you know, quick decisive move cut to
- 19:30Speaker 1: the outside, Um, you know, little outs maybe come you know,
- 19:33Speaker 1: comebacks to pit however you want to call it. But
- 19:36Speaker 1: that's when you have that kind of speed, you should
- 19:38Speaker 1: be able to create that kind of separation by putting
- 19:41Speaker 1: the stress on the corner. So he's running Jack Jones off,
- 19:44Speaker 1: he's turning balls out bang, twelve fifteen yard games consecutive.
- 19:48Speaker 1: And then once you have success with that, now you
- 19:51Speaker 1: get that corner looking to bite and you run by
- 19:54Speaker 1: him and he was open. When he ran by him,
- 19:56Speaker 1: they got their feet tangled up. I thought it was
- 19:58Speaker 1: pass interference, okay on Jack Jones. I think I heard
- 20:01Speaker 1: other people. Some other people said they didn't think it
- 20:03Speaker 1: was interference a coach on the other side, but it
- 20:07Speaker 1: was a coach on the offensive. Um was yelling that
- 20:10Speaker 1: that's pi jack or something like that. But yeah, yeah,
- 20:15Speaker 1: So I don't know if it really was or not.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Some people sort of disagreed that thought it was incidental.
- 20:19Speaker 1: But the point is he ran by him. Yeah, that's
- 20:23Speaker 1: an opportunity to make a play. And I think people
- 20:24Speaker 1: probably saw the clip of him yesterday doing the little
- 20:27Speaker 1: double move, and I think he's showing some savvy He's
- 20:29Speaker 1: showing some development of I'm not just gonna beat everybody
- 20:33Speaker 1: in the league with my speed. I need to be smart.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I need to know how to throw double moves at guys.
- 20:37Speaker 1: And I think you're starting to see those things pick up.
- 20:40Speaker 1: He's just he's been a model rookie in terms of
- 20:42Speaker 1: he's been out there every day. He seems to get
- 20:44Speaker 1: better every day. He's making catches, and you know he's
- 20:46Speaker 1: certainly his his physical aspects are are are popping off
- 20:49Speaker 1: the field. So I think Thornton certainly somebody be excited.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I would say, other than Thornton and his speed and
- 20:54Speaker 1: kind of athleticism in Parker and his contested catchability, everybody
- 20:58Speaker 1: else is pretty good, and all those receivers pretty good.
- 21:00Speaker 1: You know, I don't think anybody and I'm got to
- 21:02Speaker 1: throw Johnny and Hunter Henry into that. They're not over.
- 21:04Speaker 1: They don't blow you away. They catch a ball. It's
- 21:06Speaker 1: not like wow, it's just they're kind of there. They're
- 21:09Speaker 1: where they're supposed to be, the catch the ball and
- 21:10Speaker 1: they get what's there. So we'll see how it continues
- 21:13Speaker 1: to develop. But I think Thornton's ability has people excited
- 21:16Speaker 1: for good reason. I think he's a guy that could
- 21:18Speaker 1: could maybe take things to another love. I want to
- 21:20Speaker 1: throw one out there because you know how I love
- 21:21Speaker 1: this crap, right, Freddie? Yeah, So we just gave it
- 21:24Speaker 1: twenty five minutes of Mike and Paul telling you it
- 21:26Speaker 1: was better today. There was some signs of life, some
- 21:29Speaker 1: good stuff offensively, Do you think it's dictated that way?
- 21:33Speaker 1: What do you mean like we got to find a
- 21:34Speaker 1: way to get the offense some confidence today? Coaching coaching wise?
- 21:38Speaker 1: Oh yeah, like we're gonna set up some periods. Like
- 21:42Speaker 1: Mike had said, like he thought that there wasn't necessarily
- 21:44Speaker 1: the highest tempo, and I don't want it wasn't a
- 21:47Speaker 1: walk through. I'm not I'm not. I'm not. They were
- 21:48Speaker 1: in full pads and there was contact upfront that but
- 21:52Speaker 1: I don't think today looked like yesterday in terms of
- 21:54Speaker 1: intensity to you. No, no, And I think it was
- 21:56Speaker 1: a lot of ones verse twos too. So I wonder
- 21:58Speaker 1: if maybe they set it up a little bit like
- 22:00Speaker 1: we gotta make you know what, and like Brian Hoyer said,
- 22:03Speaker 1: sometimes you gotta screw it up to get better. I
- 22:05Speaker 1: think Brian Hoyer would had a quote a little must
- 22:07Speaker 1: be speaking now. Um. I just wonder if maybe that
- 22:10Speaker 1: the coaches said, you know what, we need to find
- 22:13Speaker 1: a way to have some success. They're getting beaten down. Yeah, yeah,
- 22:16Speaker 1: could be. I mean, I'm all for it, building up
- 22:19Speaker 1: some confidence. And you know, I also saw some speculation
- 22:21Speaker 1: of you know, based on how it was divided up.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Reese was saying, maybe maybe Mac wouldn't play on Thursday night.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Well he was talking about the only time he saw them.
- 22:30Speaker 1: This was Reese's words, not mine or deuces. Every time
- 22:35Speaker 1: that the offense was working against the defense that was
- 22:37Speaker 1: working off cards, so the defense would be simulating the Giants.
- 22:42Speaker 1: It was Hoyer and Zappy, So maybe he speculated we
- 22:45Speaker 1: won't see much if at all, of which I went
- 22:47Speaker 1: back and looked, and he played in all three last year.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I mean, I know it was a weird situation with
- 22:51Speaker 1: with Newton obviously, and we were trying to figure that
- 22:54Speaker 1: all out, but he did play in all three last year.
- 22:55Speaker 1: So do you think that would be wise to not
- 22:57Speaker 1: have him play at all? I don't. I don't think
- 23:01Speaker 1: you should play. Yeah, I mean I think they need
- 23:03Speaker 1: to work. But I think you've got two weeks of
- 23:07Speaker 1: joint practices and so I don't think it's like, oh,
- 23:09Speaker 1: they're factoring in that. Yeah, if they had joint practices
- 23:13Speaker 1: before this game, I would say he doesn't need to play. Yeah,
- 23:16Speaker 1: I mean I also think there's value to taking him
- 23:18Speaker 1: out of the fire. You talk about backing off a
- 23:20Speaker 1: little bit. Just let him go on the sideline to
- 23:22Speaker 1: hear the call, take the mental reps kind of, you know,
- 23:24Speaker 1: step away from it. I remember, you know, just being
- 23:26Speaker 1: in hockey when guys would sit out and it will
- 23:28Speaker 1: be like, don't just sit there and sull go up
- 23:31Speaker 1: and watch and engage in the game. And you know,
- 23:33Speaker 1: I still think that there's value for him, especially if
- 23:35Speaker 1: this is a new offense, to you know, just work
- 23:37Speaker 1: on the mental aspect of the game, and you know,
- 23:39Speaker 1: not worrying about having to deliver on the field and
- 23:42Speaker 1: you know, reacting, Oh god, everybody's gonna lose their mind
- 23:44Speaker 1: if they look terrible against the Giants. You never know
- 23:47Speaker 1: what Bill like, like he thinks of something new. But
- 23:50Speaker 1: maybe you know, now that they're the three preseason games,
- 23:53Speaker 1: maybe he decides, I'm going to treat the first preseason
- 23:57Speaker 1: game like it used to be the fourth preseason game. Yeah,
- 24:00Speaker 1: we've only got three, and then we've got that big
- 24:02Speaker 1: gap after the third one in our first regular season game,
- 24:06Speaker 1: and I don't want guys not playing in that third one.
- 24:09Speaker 1: So let's use this first one to evaluate all these
- 24:14Speaker 1: all the all the other guys, and then we'll build.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Then we'll work in our starters games two and three
- 24:20Speaker 1: so that they've got reps closer to the regular season.
- 24:24Speaker 1: You never know, no, and I'm seeing Mac is actually
- 24:27Speaker 1: talking right now saying, uh, it's that two percent. We're close.
- 24:30Speaker 1: We're just at the buying and trust it. I think
- 24:32Speaker 1: we're going to figure it out. So, you know, some
- 24:35Speaker 1: some positive messages from him. I know he's uh, I
- 24:38Speaker 1: mean it was I'm sure it was hard last year,
- 24:40Speaker 1: but it just seems like this is kind of a
- 24:42Speaker 1: different kind of adversity that that Mac hasn't really faced before.
- 24:46Speaker 1: We've talked about him being a returning starting quarterback for
- 24:49Speaker 1: the first time since probably high school. You know, he's
- 24:51Speaker 1: always been in a neck and neck battle to beat
- 24:54Speaker 1: out another guy, and you know, now we finally has
- 24:56Speaker 1: the job and things are kind of changed on him,
- 24:58Speaker 1: and so it's it's I think he's in the a
- 25:00Speaker 1: bit of a unique situation, and I think we'll learn
- 25:01Speaker 1: a little bit more about him as a guy in
- 25:03Speaker 1: a quarterback going into this season. How how it kind
- 25:06Speaker 1: of comes together going forward? All Right? Eight five five
- 25:10Speaker 1: Pats five hundred is the eighth ticket outline, web radio
- 25:13Speaker 1: at Patriots dot com is the email address? What else
- 25:17Speaker 1: have we got anything? Um? I was just I had
- 25:19Speaker 1: a few guys. I just was you know, we were talking.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I thought, Um, I thought, you know, Jack Jones has
- 25:23Speaker 1: been a little bit more active the last couple of
- 25:24Speaker 1: days around the ball. Let's talk about the cornerback. Couple
- 25:27Speaker 1: of guys. Yeah, sure, I think he's he's feisty. This
- 25:30Speaker 1: one's a funny one because I'm going the other way
- 25:32Speaker 1: on him. Okay, I don't know. I like what he's
- 25:34Speaker 1: done in a nice interception yesterday on Zappy. I mean,
- 25:37Speaker 1: he isn't quite like wild making wild plays all the time,
- 25:39Speaker 1: but I just I feel like last couple of days
- 25:41Speaker 1: he's been around the ball a little bit more, maybe
- 25:43Speaker 1: too much, as we talked about later, but I like him.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Marcus Jones another one who's I flashed a little bit. Yeah,
- 25:50Speaker 1: I think we might have made a little bit too
- 25:52Speaker 1: much of him getting some top slot reps yesterday because
- 25:55Speaker 1: today Miles Bryant was kind of in there. So I
- 25:56Speaker 1: think they're doing the thing where they rotate guys through
- 25:59Speaker 1: with the starters so people are experienced. But um, I
- 26:02Speaker 1: don't I don't know. Paul you you you said he's
- 26:03Speaker 1: chasing a lot, and it seems like maybe, yeah, I
- 26:05Speaker 1: like I like Marcus Jones more than Jack Jones, but
- 26:09Speaker 1: that's like they're really not playing the same spot. Um,
- 26:12Speaker 1: So it's not really an apples to apples comparison. But
- 26:15Speaker 1: I do think that there are times on those crossing
- 26:17Speaker 1: routes where he seems to be chasing a little bit. Um.
- 26:20Speaker 1: So I wonder if um all right, so Badard calls
- 26:24Speaker 1: it no all out competitive periods today, but he thought
- 26:27Speaker 1: the offense looked competent as well. So if even even Bedard,
- 26:31Speaker 1: who's been as critical as anybody, UM, just I think
- 26:36Speaker 1: both of those guys show some promise. The two rookie corners, um,
- 26:40Speaker 1: I think they're depth pieces at this point, though I
- 26:42Speaker 1: don't think that they're really threats. Maybe Marcus Jones, um,
- 26:48Speaker 1: you know, down the road. But I think they have
- 26:51Speaker 1: two good draft picks there, that two promising guys. I
- 26:54Speaker 1: think Jack Jones kind of flashed early and I think
- 26:58Speaker 1: he's kind of been getting beat a littleim up. Those
- 27:01Speaker 1: two plays stick out to me yesterday that Thornton really
- 27:04Speaker 1: just ran him through the ringer. We saw Malcolm Butler
- 27:07Speaker 1: make a play in the in stadium practice. But how's
- 27:09Speaker 1: he what kind of camps he had? Malcolm Butler kind
- 27:14Speaker 1: of camp? Is it? Is it that? I mean, I
- 27:16Speaker 1: haven't really been I think he's always been an up
- 27:18Speaker 1: and down I have never been a Malcolm Butler is
- 27:21Speaker 1: an all pro type cornerback guy. Which was the came
- 27:24Speaker 1: like there was a game that Antonio Brown had like
- 27:27Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty yards against him. Now, Antonio Brown
- 27:29Speaker 1: one of the best receivers in football like at the time. No,
- 27:33Speaker 1: no shame there. But do you remember the game I'm
- 27:36Speaker 1: talking about when everybody was saying, wow, we did a
- 27:38Speaker 1: great job shutting down Antonio did. Oh yeah, one hundred
- 27:41Speaker 1: and thirty years No, he did. This is my point.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I had to think. I think there's a lot of
- 27:44Speaker 1: up and down to see the game out, like two
- 27:46Speaker 1: big plays, but and they weren't all his fault. He
- 27:49Speaker 1: had a good game. I really don't know where to
- 27:51Speaker 1: come up on you for. He was out, he had
- 27:54Speaker 1: it to thank you, he was overmatched, he had a question,
- 27:58Speaker 1: He had a good game. I still remember the game.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I'm in exactly the same position as I was when
- 28:03Speaker 1: camp started. I don't know if he's gonna be playing
- 28:05Speaker 1: or cut. I still feel like I'm known because some
- 28:08Speaker 1: days he's out there with significant reps and he's kind
- 28:10Speaker 1: of involved. In other days, I don't even lay eyes
- 28:12Speaker 1: on him. I mean, I think Mills has been probably
- 28:14Speaker 1: the most consistent of anybody. Mills and Bryant still your starters.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Oh you mean, uh, Terrence, Terrence, Terrence Mitchell. I don't know.
- 28:23Speaker 1: I felt like it feels like they're feeling out. Jay
- 28:25Speaker 1: Jones on the outside on the other one a little bit.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Last two days they've had Jonathan Jones on the outside.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Yesterday it was Marcus Jones in the slot, and today
- 28:33Speaker 1: it was Miles Brian in the slot. So I think
- 28:35Speaker 1: they're feeling that out a bit. I early on it
- 28:38Speaker 1: felt like Terrence Mitchell was embedded in that, you know,
- 28:41Speaker 1: across from You kind of have to have flexibility because
- 28:44Speaker 1: every team poses different challenges with their receivers, you know,
- 28:47Speaker 1: different skill sets and everything, and I don't think you
- 28:50Speaker 1: can peg this guy's always going to be here and
- 28:53Speaker 1: this guy's always going to be there, because you could
- 28:55Speaker 1: have one team that has two great outside receivers and
- 28:58Speaker 1: then another team that has, you know, a better inside guy,
- 29:01Speaker 1: and so you have to like mix and match when
- 29:04Speaker 1: you're playing. I think that's well we might see this year,
- 29:07Speaker 1: is that in the past, it always felt like the
- 29:09Speaker 1: two outside corners were kind of consistently out there Gilmore
- 29:12Speaker 1: JC Jackson in recent like they were no matter what
- 29:14Speaker 1: they were doing on defense, those guys were always out there.
- 29:17Speaker 1: I think Mills will still probably always be out there,
- 29:19Speaker 1: but I think it'll be much more matchup base with
- 29:21Speaker 1: that second outside corner spot, whether it's Jay Jones against
- 29:24Speaker 1: a little fast guy or maybe Mitchell in there. But
- 29:28Speaker 1: I feel similar to Mitchell as I do to Malcolm Butler.
- 29:31Speaker 1: It's hard to tell. Hard to tell. I mean, they've
- 29:33Speaker 1: certainly both made occasional plays on the ball. But you know,
- 29:36Speaker 1: there's nothing screaming to you that all you know, we
- 29:39Speaker 1: found the guy you know that's going to be the
- 29:41Speaker 1: next you know, no question Starre. We are we good
- 29:44Speaker 1: at safety right now? Do we like what we're seeing
- 29:46Speaker 1: at safety? If you don't like what you're seeing at safety,
- 29:49Speaker 1: I don't know what position you could know. I know,
- 29:51Speaker 1: but like we came into the preseason and training camp
- 29:54Speaker 1: with okay, safety is good. Yeah, we've got good depth there. Yes,
- 29:58Speaker 1: and that's that's shown on the field. I would say yes,
- 30:00Speaker 1: but it hasn't even gotten to them because I think
- 30:03Speaker 1: the coverage by the cornerbacks is really good and I
- 30:04Speaker 1: think the disruption upfront is good. So it's they're certainly
- 30:08Speaker 1: not getting beat deep which traditional safety plays. I mean,
- 30:10Speaker 1: I think Hunter Henry has been pretty consistent and had
- 30:13Speaker 1: a number of catches and John Hu maybe just a
- 30:16Speaker 1: notch below him, So you know, a little bit of
- 30:18Speaker 1: coverage question maybe in there, But I think Josh Bledsoe's
- 30:21Speaker 1: you know, continue to look good. Had a good interception yesterday.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Seemed like they threw the ball right to him. He's
- 30:25Speaker 1: in the right spot, so they've got some questions. Today.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Jibrol Peppers was just kind of running laps on the side,
- 30:30Speaker 1: getting in shape. So he's still working his way back.
- 30:32Speaker 1: How's it going to look when he comes in. He's
- 30:34Speaker 1: the only one we haven't really seen yet yet, but
- 30:36Speaker 1: the other three you've seen. I think Dugger still struggles
- 30:38Speaker 1: a little bit in coverage on tight ends. I think
- 30:40Speaker 1: Phillips is really good at that. And you know, mccority's mccority.
- 30:44Speaker 1: He looks you know, he's the guy back end yelling
- 30:47Speaker 1: yelling at people, Yeah, yelling at the offense. Your guy,
- 30:50Speaker 1: Henry Anderson. Is he going to be a factor this year?
- 30:53Speaker 1: I don't think so. I mean, I think Dietrich Wise
- 30:55Speaker 1: went out and he got a little playtime, and now
- 30:57Speaker 1: it seems like Dietrich Wise is easing his way back
- 31:00Speaker 1: into things, albeit with a giant brace on his left arm.
- 31:03Speaker 1: And it seemed like Anderson kind of got bumped back down,
- 31:06Speaker 1: So I think he's kind of that a rotational backup.
- 31:08Speaker 1: But they seem to like Dietrich wise, they seem to,
- 31:11Speaker 1: you know, have plans for him and what they're going
- 31:13Speaker 1: to do upfront, and I continue to just be worried
- 31:16Speaker 1: that we're only going to see Christian Barmore really in
- 31:18Speaker 1: pure passing situations, and that you know, they're not going
- 31:21Speaker 1: to make him a true three down lineman, and you know,
- 31:24Speaker 1: a guy who's just as disruptive in and out, they're
- 31:26Speaker 1: gonna just save him and bring them on against pastors.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Maybe it'll change, but right now that's something that seems
- 31:31Speaker 1: like it's coming down the line, and I don't like it.
- 31:33Speaker 1: No sign of Jimmy White and the running back, so
- 31:36Speaker 1: that means time Montgomery's been getting some extra reps. He's
- 31:39Speaker 1: been getting plenty. I mean, I think he is. We
- 31:41Speaker 1: talked about him a little bit this morning upstairs. I
- 31:43Speaker 1: think he's as much of a lock right now as
- 31:46Speaker 1: you could probably get on the team. He seems in
- 31:48Speaker 1: the mix of everything, he gets consistent carries. He's right
- 31:51Speaker 1: there with Stevens. Stevenson now the number one bat no
- 31:54Speaker 1: no no, Karas still gets the first and maybe a
- 31:57Speaker 1: little bit more carries. I mean, it hard to tell,
- 31:59Speaker 1: but I thought I thought they both had some good
- 32:01Speaker 1: runs today. I thought Stevenson in particular, how one where
- 32:04Speaker 1: you know, just seem like things kind of opened up
- 32:06Speaker 1: for him. It was a good and quarterback Paul thinks
- 32:08Speaker 1: Zappy has leap frog. Matt Jim, Well, he's had a
- 32:13Speaker 1: good camp. You know, it's a second year in a row.
- 32:15Speaker 1: You've seen a rookie quarterback, you know, not look totally
- 32:18Speaker 1: flustered and you know, out of his mind. So I
- 32:21Speaker 1: think there's a lot of I think he looks a
- 32:23Speaker 1: lot like Mac looked last year, just shorter, with maybe
- 32:27Speaker 1: a little bit more of gas on the arm. Not
- 32:29Speaker 1: not by much. He's small, but he's like six feet
- 32:35Speaker 1: thick trunk maybe maybe. Uh five Pass five hundred is
- 32:40Speaker 1: the A Ticket Hotline web radio at Patriots dot com.
- 32:43Speaker 1: It's special two o'clock edition of Patriots Unfiltered, the World's
- 32:47Speaker 1: Original podcast. Can we make that? I didn't see it?
- 32:53Speaker 1: Yeah did when you're killing it? No killing it. Just
- 32:57Speaker 1: wanted to let people know that we had a two
- 32:59Speaker 1: o'clock show. I said, you know, the world's original podcast.
- 33:04Speaker 1: It's going to be our new tag. I like it. Yeah. Uh,
- 33:08Speaker 1: Marks and Connecticut on the A Sticket hot line. What's
- 33:10Speaker 1: up Mark? Hey, guys, how's it going today. Good? You're
- 33:14Speaker 1: you're talking to the world's original podcast. You're part of
- 33:16Speaker 1: You're part of history. Last time I talked to you
- 33:19Speaker 1: guys was about the draft and that's coming gone now.
- 33:22Speaker 1: When I was at the Payas training camp with the
- 33:25Speaker 1: family yesterday and got to see some stuff go on, okay,
- 33:28Speaker 1: and I thought that, uh tykwe Thorton was just an
- 33:32Speaker 1: animal out there. I mean, he looks good. Yeah, Parker
- 33:35Speaker 1: looks good. And then also who actually was surprisingly very good.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Is a sleeper that you guys haven't talked about, is
- 33:44Speaker 1: uh little Jordan Humphrey number eighty. Yeah I heard his
- 33:48Speaker 1: name today, but yesterday I heard his name a little bit. Yeah, yeah,
- 33:54Speaker 1: little Jordan. I haven't seen I gotta be honest, I
- 33:56Speaker 1: haven't even noticed. Could he be the sick too? He's
- 33:59Speaker 1: a big it. Yeah he's not so little. It's not
- 34:02Speaker 1: such a key. He's I think about six three. He
- 34:04Speaker 1: looks like a tight end. I keep thinking he's a
- 34:06Speaker 1: tight end. He looks like a tight end. He runs
- 34:08Speaker 1: like a tight end. I don't think this well. The
- 34:10Speaker 1: Patriots keep six wide receivers. I mean maybe, but it
- 34:13Speaker 1: won't be the guy. I think Trey Nixon I think
- 34:16Speaker 1: would be the guy. Really an extra one Okay, Yeah,
- 34:19Speaker 1: I think Trey Nixon has a little something too, Like
- 34:21Speaker 1: I think there's some athleticism there. Yeah, I don't need
- 34:24Speaker 1: another guy, but little bit Jordan Humphrey, Yeah a little bit. Yeah,
- 34:28Speaker 1: all right, Well I stand alone. I haven't I haven't
- 34:31Speaker 1: seen much from little Jordan Humfrey. I don't know. I
- 34:33Speaker 1: think I just saw catch like maybe three or four
- 34:35Speaker 1: passes today, but not like I didn't catch what you said, Mark.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Did you guys see the play from Taekwon Thornton where
- 34:42Speaker 1: he did a double move. Oh yeah, and just burnt
- 34:44Speaker 1: the corner on the outside. That's what I wanted to see. Yeah,
- 34:48Speaker 1: I mean it was got a lectric buying feet. There
- 34:50Speaker 1: was that one drill yesterday where it's just one on
- 34:53Speaker 1: one cornerback first wide receiver and it's not fair to
- 34:55Speaker 1: the cornerback. He's very good in one of them. Yeah,
- 34:57Speaker 1: it's not fair to the cornerback. But man, there would
- 35:00Speaker 1: there were some nice moves by the receiver. I've been
- 35:01Speaker 1: impressed with Thornton. Yeah, who was it? Agalore had some
- 35:05Speaker 1: nicety He's the best he's the best. Yeah, dusted a
- 35:10Speaker 1: couple of guys yesterday. Yeah with him is he doesn't
- 35:13Speaker 1: catch it all the time, but he in terms of
- 35:15Speaker 1: getting open off the line, a galore is the best thing.
- 35:17Speaker 1: The minute he sees your weight go one way, he
- 35:20Speaker 1: just goes the other way. Yeah, he put on a
- 35:21Speaker 1: clinic really really. Parker uses his body really well. I'll
- 35:25Speaker 1: tell you that. Yeah. Well that's what that's his game.
- 35:28Speaker 1: That's his game. Every offensive player looks great. But thank you,
- 35:31Speaker 1: thanks March, thanks for the call. Let's go to Todd
- 35:34Speaker 1: North Carolina. Hey Todd, Hey, is this the playbook? Uh no,
- 35:39Speaker 1: this is a good show. This is the world's original podcast.
- 35:45Speaker 1: So I got two quick questions. Number one, who could
- 35:47Speaker 1: kind of be our Brandon LaBelle for this and the receivers.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Do you think maybe Parker could do that kind of
- 35:52Speaker 1: you know, get that first down seven yard catch right
- 35:55Speaker 1: along the sideline that used to do. I'd love to
- 35:57Speaker 1: see Thornton do it. Drive starters, Yeah exactly, yes, but
- 36:01Speaker 1: I mean I could see I could see Parker kind
- 36:03Speaker 1: of doing that a little bit. I mean we've seen
- 36:04Speaker 1: a little bit of it, but I mean, outside guy
- 36:06Speaker 1: who can make some make some body catches, yeah, be fine. Yeah.
- 36:11Speaker 1: And my other quick question is how important was Josh
- 36:15Speaker 1: McDaniels to the development of Brady. I'm beginning to think
- 36:19Speaker 1: that maybe there was more, you know, of Josh's input
- 36:22Speaker 1: there too, because we always say that, well, it was
- 36:24Speaker 1: Belichick Brady, they were the due, but Josh was there
- 36:26Speaker 1: for their winning season. He's always been around. Charlie was
- 36:29Speaker 1: there too when Josh was a kid. And you know,
- 36:33Speaker 1: I did the foundation, but Charlie was of the offense
- 36:36Speaker 1: with Brady. Was really McDaniels, Okay, well you know what
- 36:41Speaker 1: I mean, like he did. Josh mcd was an offensive
- 36:45Speaker 1: assistant who was like charting plays when that when Brady
- 36:48Speaker 1: was learning these You can make the case that in
- 36:50Speaker 1: OH seven, But then I would make the case that
- 36:53Speaker 1: Randy Moss and West Welco were more part of his
- 36:56Speaker 1: development than anything else. You know, well, I would make
- 36:59Speaker 1: the case that your wives and Bill Belichick, but more
- 37:01Speaker 1: respect if you want to credit coaches, right or others
- 37:04Speaker 1: for Brady. If we're crediting others other than Brady, it's
- 37:07Speaker 1: Charlie Wise and Bill Belichick. Yeah, and Alice Guerrero. Well
- 37:11Speaker 1: that's way later, no, But I mean it was already
- 37:13Speaker 1: a three time super Bowl his longevity. But I also
- 37:17Speaker 1: think though there's something to be said with the longevity
- 37:19Speaker 1: that that Josh and Tom were together, and the in
- 37:21Speaker 1: the shorthand and the understanding that they had of experience
- 37:25Speaker 1: and what they've gone before, and the ability to shift
- 37:27Speaker 1: and do things like. I mean not to say I'm
- 37:29Speaker 1: giving credit for Tom's development, but I think, you know,
- 37:32Speaker 1: they kind of went hand in hand for a lot
- 37:33Speaker 1: of that, you know, whole second half of that. I'll
- 37:35Speaker 1: say this, it didn't seem like in all the years
- 37:39Speaker 1: he was with Josh, and you know, you'd have a
- 37:41Speaker 1: bad series and Josh would come over and sit next
- 37:43Speaker 1: to him, it didn't seem outwardly that they ever had
- 37:46Speaker 1: any riffs. And that that's saying something. Yeah, you know,
- 37:51Speaker 1: like they never had seen words on the sideline where
- 37:54Speaker 1: Bill O'Brien he certainly did, right, Yeah, he had that.
- 37:57Speaker 1: I don't remember anything ever with Charlie either, though I
- 38:00Speaker 1: do didn't didn't Oh no, maybe that was Parcels that
- 38:03Speaker 1: Parcels took the play calling away from Charlie at one
- 38:06Speaker 1: point or maybe one last thing I remember Charlie had
- 38:09Speaker 1: play calling taken away from not sure it was with
- 38:12Speaker 1: Bill or with No. I'm not sure. I thought Charlie
- 38:16Speaker 1: ever called the plays under parcels here? Okay, I remembers ahead, No,
- 38:23Speaker 1: just are you guys gonna do any more training camp cast? Like?
- 38:26Speaker 1: Are you gonna be down there for when the they're
- 38:28Speaker 1: practicing against the Yeah? Come on, you know it would
- 38:32Speaker 1: be who else are we gotta do? Well? I was
- 38:35Speaker 1: wondering because I kind of was hoping you'd be there
- 38:36Speaker 1: on the Monday. I don't know why. I like, we're
- 38:38Speaker 1: gonna do live with the Panthers on what Monday? Cool?
- 38:40Speaker 1: That's what I want. I got you, all right, I
- 38:45Speaker 1: have to be honest. He thoroughly confuses me almost every
- 38:47Speaker 1: time he calls, like, what what on the on the Monday?
- 38:51Speaker 1: What like? What Monday? Yesterday? Maybe a week for Monday
- 38:55Speaker 1: that there's no official practice scheduled, but there might be
- 38:57Speaker 1: a secret practice of some sort that we would like
- 39:01Speaker 1: we will be live during the two Panthers Tuesday and
- 39:04Speaker 1: Wenches Tuesday and Wednesday, right like we always I mean,
- 39:07Speaker 1: since we started doing the joint practices, we've always done
- 39:11Speaker 1: live during the joint practices. Yep, right, yep. I don't know.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Might be a mean thing. Any any camp that we
- 39:19Speaker 1: practice we go to, we'll have a camp cast rap
- 39:21Speaker 1: at very at the very least. Paul gets very defensive
- 39:24Speaker 1: when anyone asked him, are you gonna be doing any work?
- 39:27Speaker 1: Gets very defensive, Well, we do lots of work, Like
- 39:30Speaker 1: are you going to continue the camp casts? Like, no, no,
- 39:34Speaker 1: we just have this year. We're gonna only only half
- 39:37Speaker 1: a camp. We're gonna do it. We're not gonna do
- 39:39Speaker 1: the roses. He knows, he knows. We got him web
- 39:42Speaker 1: radio at Patriots dot com is the email address, got
- 39:45Speaker 1: some emails coming in. Let's see what we got here.
- 39:49Speaker 1: This is Sam and Toronto. He said, did Fred jinks
- 39:53Speaker 1: the offense? When all off season he repeatedly stated he
- 39:56Speaker 1: had no worries about the offense from the sounds of it.
- 39:59Speaker 1: The O line has been the major issue, which is
- 40:02Speaker 1: surprised given we used our first round pick in a
- 40:04Speaker 1: guard and have a former head coach as our ol coach. Paul.
- 40:08Speaker 1: That's snark. Also, it seems Patricia is bringing his ben
- 40:13Speaker 1: don't break mentality to the offense, where we'll be able
- 40:16Speaker 1: to move down the field but be unable to punch
- 40:19Speaker 1: it into the end zone. Stoke for yet another Nick
- 40:21Speaker 1: Folk team MVP season. A lot of us starn't there.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Why are we assuming they're gonna be able to move
- 40:28Speaker 1: the ball between the twenties. I was waiting for that because,
- 40:32Speaker 1: based on what we've seen, Jake Bailey bet iced down
- 40:36Speaker 1: that Lake. Yeah. Another email along those lines, This is
- 40:41Speaker 1: Daniel from San Antonio. Is Fred still bullish on the offense?
- 40:46Speaker 1: I know it's early, but based on how bad we
- 40:48Speaker 1: projected our defense to be this season, which factored our
- 40:52Speaker 1: draft free agents, and how we ended this season, is
- 40:55Speaker 1: Fred still bullish on the offense, the same offense that's
- 40:58Speaker 1: struggling with this defense? Can I give you a little defense, Fred? Yeah,
- 41:03Speaker 1: I think you have stated many times during the offseason
- 41:06Speaker 1: that you're less worried about the offense than the defense. No,
- 41:09Speaker 1: but I've all, I haven't really heard you say you're
- 41:10Speaker 1: really bullish on the No. I did, I absolutely did.
- 41:13Speaker 1: I'll how to give you a note. I'll take that. Um.
- 41:15Speaker 1: I absolutely did say I am bullish on the offense. Okay,
- 41:19Speaker 1: and right now I don't remember you're saying that, But
- 41:20Speaker 1: I don't know. I've said it on several occasions and
- 41:23Speaker 1: I will stick with that. I still believe they've got
- 41:26Speaker 1: the pieces. I still believe they could. Yeah, I know
- 41:29Speaker 1: you you're on record say I think they'll be fine,
- 41:31Speaker 1: but I don't think they have like a great offense. Yeah,
- 41:33Speaker 1: I don't think they have the pieces for a great
- 41:35Speaker 1: I believe they have the pieces to be a good offense,
- 41:38Speaker 1: not great, but good, better better than last year. I
- 41:41Speaker 1: was in the same boat as you, and I still
- 41:43Speaker 1: think the offense might be better than the defense. I'm
- 41:46Speaker 1: not saying, and I don't know which which unit will
- 41:48Speaker 1: be better. I don't think either one of them's going
- 41:50Speaker 1: to be great. That's all I agree with that. But
- 41:52Speaker 1: I still I could still see the offense kind of
- 41:54Speaker 1: finding something if they are really developing into a new
- 41:57Speaker 1: kind of thing and people get in the same page.
- 41:59Speaker 1: I just I'm the same concern about the defense. I've
- 42:01Speaker 1: had all that Mac Jones quote to me is telling you,
- 42:04Speaker 1: I know, there's still a lot of people who don't
- 42:06Speaker 1: really understand, don't think that they're doing anything different, or
- 42:09Speaker 1: don't know, and we don't because we're not coaches. We're
- 42:12Speaker 1: not telling we're not excess those guys. But Mac is
- 42:15Speaker 1: telling you you just have to trust it. What do
- 42:17Speaker 1: you think he has to trust there's newness to what
- 42:21Speaker 1: they're doing. They have to trust trust the programs process. Yeah, right,
- 42:26Speaker 1: Like he's telling you that there's a learning curve, there's
- 42:29Speaker 1: a transition going on, and I believe you get better
- 42:31Speaker 1: and I believe it right, and I believe they've got
- 42:34Speaker 1: the pieces. If they learn it, they've got the pieces
- 42:36Speaker 1: to execute it. It's just still it's still hard for
- 42:39Speaker 1: me to look at the slate and all that, at
- 42:41Speaker 1: the competition that they have for the defense. And you know,
- 42:44Speaker 1: I'm encouraged by what we've seen, and I'm encouraged by
- 42:46Speaker 1: Barmore and some of the new pieces. But right we
- 42:48Speaker 1: don't know what we're looking at yet, don't know what
- 42:51Speaker 1: we're looking at offense. I do know I'm looking at
- 42:53Speaker 1: Tamara and I'm looking at Alex, who have just joined
- 42:56Speaker 1: us from the field. What's going on? So thunder out there?
- 42:59Speaker 1: It's starting to rain. Yeah, I'm all for the rain,
- 43:05Speaker 1: as long as it cools it down, yea, and doesn't
- 43:07Speaker 1: make it more humid. Supposed to how's Mac doing out there?
- 43:11Speaker 1: Did he seem chipper? He seemed in a better mood today,
- 43:15Speaker 1: I think, um, I think, you know, he answered the
- 43:17Speaker 1: question of of he seemed frustrated out there, and I
- 43:20Speaker 1: thought that, you know, his response is great, like, obviously
- 43:23Speaker 1: he cares about this team, and so he's going to
- 43:25Speaker 1: care when that practice things aren't going well. Um, and
- 43:27Speaker 1: he said he you know, he does go harder and
- 43:30Speaker 1: practice on himself and others because you know, you want
- 43:32Speaker 1: it to be easy by the time you get in
- 43:34Speaker 1: the game. So obviously, with today being a better practice,
- 43:37Speaker 1: he did seem, you know, pretty positive. Two percent better today. Yeah,
- 43:41Speaker 1: so okay, what do you seeing, Alex. Yeah, that was
- 43:45Speaker 1: kind of his quote. I think we're a lot closer
- 43:47Speaker 1: on things. It's just that last two percent um offense
- 43:50Speaker 1: definitely looked better. It was like kind of slow still,
- 43:52Speaker 1: it wasn't super fast paced, but some scraps in there
- 43:57Speaker 1: for the intensity. So I don't know if that's a
- 43:59Speaker 1: good signer. It's not a it's not it's not necessarily
- 44:03Speaker 1: a good sign, but it's not a bad sign. Yeah,
- 44:05Speaker 1: that's what kind of Devin mccordy said, was that it's
- 44:08Speaker 1: too late for that, and this is the point where
- 44:10Speaker 1: we're kind of supposed to be coming together as one.
- 44:13Speaker 1: I think it's supposed to the defense for the offense.
- 44:15Speaker 1: I think it's not bad to have that, and then
- 44:18Speaker 1: you know tomorrow is going to be a walk through
- 44:20Speaker 1: at best, and then you get to play another team
- 44:23Speaker 1: and really take out your aggression. So Max, it's just
- 44:26Speaker 1: tough love. It's just tough love. Some you know, brother
- 44:30Speaker 1: brotherly fighting. Yeah, Mac almost got implicated tools Nelson Aguilar
- 44:35Speaker 1: kind of pulled him out. It looked like he was
- 44:37Speaker 1: trying to break it up. But they're big guys to
- 44:39Speaker 1: break up in a fight. So I was like, get
- 44:42Speaker 1: out of there, get out of there, protect the franchise, Like,
- 44:45Speaker 1: come on, do we have any idea who was winning
- 44:47Speaker 1: the fight? Well, I mean I far more Andre and Andrews.
- 44:54Speaker 1: And earlier in practice there had been another little D
- 44:57Speaker 1: line O line scuffle. I think Invers was in the
- 45:00Speaker 1: midst of that one. Yeah, I do too. So I
- 45:02Speaker 1: wonder if the two of them were kind of just
- 45:04Speaker 1: talking a lot of trash today to each other, or
- 45:06Speaker 1: I don't know if Barmour was in the first. That's
- 45:08Speaker 1: tough to pick. I probably go Barmore, though, I think
- 45:11Speaker 1: I mean, he's just he's got too much energy. The
- 45:13Speaker 1: youth too, yeah, the youth. Yeah, But Andrew's dad strength. Now,
- 45:17Speaker 1: so that's right, don't you forget it? Yeah? But dad,
- 45:20Speaker 1: strength only kicks in when your kids involved, right, like
- 45:24Speaker 1: something exactly, but I mean technically like Mac Jones, as
- 45:30Speaker 1: he's a kid, he wants to protect Max. Okay, all right,
- 45:35Speaker 1: kicking Okay. I liked Math He was like, I love
- 45:38Speaker 1: those guys. I have a lot of respect for them.
- 45:39Speaker 1: So I was trying to break it up. It was
- 45:40Speaker 1: really cute and in the same time he's adorable. Just
- 45:46Speaker 1: complete passes. Yeah, yeah, So we were just talking if
- 45:51Speaker 1: if about the wide receivers, we know who the top
- 45:55Speaker 1: five are. So you got Algalore Born Myers Parker, So
- 46:01Speaker 1: is that your order or you're just no, no, not
- 46:03Speaker 1: not in any ordering them off? And who am I
- 46:06Speaker 1: missing their? Say? Parker said, Thornton, those are your top five?
- 46:12Speaker 1: If they keep six, who's who's your six? I would
- 46:15Speaker 1: probably say Tray Nixon, Tray next. We've seen him a
- 46:18Speaker 1: lot of special teams. You agree with, Paul? And yeah,
- 46:21Speaker 1: Alex and I were talking about that today when we
- 46:23Speaker 1: were sitting in practice, and you know, I was watching
- 46:25Speaker 1: him yesterday and he was, you know, helps, what about
- 46:28Speaker 1: little Jordan Humphrey. It's little had a pretty good day yesterday.
- 46:33Speaker 1: I was busy with a lot of off the field stuff,
- 46:35Speaker 1: but from some stuff I write, at least from the writers. Hello,
- 46:39Speaker 1: beat writers do that. But you know that's it's a
- 46:42Speaker 1: good observation. If a guy's getting a lot of work
- 46:44Speaker 1: and special teams, that's a good sign for him. I
- 46:47Speaker 1: had the same note for a guy like Miles Bryant.
- 46:50Speaker 1: You know that that room is really full, and I
- 46:53Speaker 1: think that you know, seeing him on special teams a lot,
- 46:55Speaker 1: could could say something. Who knows, Yeah, yeah, I thought
- 46:58Speaker 1: we saw Ronnie Perkins do something today too. That was
- 47:00Speaker 1: that was a big moment for us up on the thing.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Would he get a pressure pall? Was that what it was? Did?
- 47:05Speaker 1: I mean, it's with defense, it's hard, especially linebackers because
- 47:08Speaker 1: you're not tackling or anything. But of all those young guys,
- 47:12Speaker 1: Ouch Jennings, Ronnie Perkins, mcgron, McMillan, Jenny McMillan, are we
- 47:19Speaker 1: seeing anything that we like? Sure, Jennings, none of them.
- 47:24Speaker 1: I mean, uche is in there, I mean as he's been.
- 47:27Speaker 1: But it seems like, you know, the past rush package
- 47:30Speaker 1: on third down would be Jennings and and Ucha and
- 47:33Speaker 1: judeon barmore. Um, I think Jennings's level of reps has
- 47:38Speaker 1: increased as Camp has gone on. He's more involved with
- 47:41Speaker 1: regular guys as Camp has gone on. Uja to me
- 47:44Speaker 1: is a third down guy. Um Perkins haven't seen at
- 47:47Speaker 1: all mcgron even less than Perkins. That's disappointing to me.
- 47:52Speaker 1: I thought mcgron was he was my sleeper, one of
- 47:55Speaker 1: my safe I mean, I think they like to buy
- 47:57Speaker 1: and Longie more than him. Yeah, as they play over him.
- 48:00Speaker 1: But I think it's definitely a note that Jennings is
- 48:02Speaker 1: kind of playing on the third down pass rush kind
- 48:05Speaker 1: of guys, because I always looked at him a little
- 48:07Speaker 1: bit just more as a big, slow stout, you know,
- 48:10Speaker 1: first second down kind of a guy. So I think
- 48:13Speaker 1: you know, Paul's right, He's he's been one of the
- 48:15Speaker 1: guys that have He looks like he's lost and weight
- 48:16Speaker 1: and he's probably as a result games some quickness. Yeah,
- 48:20Speaker 1: just wonder what's there if he's able to you know,
- 48:23Speaker 1: I mean, Ucha we've talked about a lot of just
- 48:25Speaker 1: if he's able to get around you or avoid you.
- 48:28Speaker 1: He's tough, but usually when guys get their hands on Uja,
- 48:31Speaker 1: it's it's it's shut down pretty quick. So hopefully Jennings
- 48:35Speaker 1: has some you know, countermoves and some power that you
- 48:37Speaker 1: know to bring something a little different like Judon does,
- 48:39Speaker 1: who seems to be like a real handful. For all right,
- 48:42Speaker 1: we'll take a break when we come back. More calls

- 54:36Speaker 1: Got some news about Tamara. I'm gonna go big time
- 54:40Speaker 1: on us SEC football sideline reporter Labor Day weekend for
- 54:45Speaker 1: South Carolina game. Is that right? Well, it'd be helpful
- 54:50Speaker 1: when you're on the sideline. Yeah, that's right. Um, heading
- 54:54Speaker 1: down to SEC country. Super exciting. Um, first time probably
- 55:00Speaker 1: doing sideline for a college football game in a couple
- 55:02Speaker 1: of years. But I'm excited, especially because of the Virginia
- 55:05Speaker 1: Tech connection with head coach Shane Biemerum being the coach
- 55:09Speaker 1: of the Gamecocks going into his second season. So I'm
- 55:12Speaker 1: pumped that great brush up on your knowledge of South Carolina.
- 55:18Speaker 1: So what's that? Like? They fly in the day before
- 55:19Speaker 1: the game, and do you go to like the production
- 55:21Speaker 1: meeting and all that stuff. Fils are probably happened like
- 55:24Speaker 1: via zoom, okay, and then I'll fly in Friday to
- 55:28Speaker 1: like you know, have a meeting and stuff. But wow,
- 55:30Speaker 1: I'm excited. Yeah, I've always wanted to go to a
- 55:33Speaker 1: big time college football game. I've never been to like
- 55:35Speaker 1: an SEC big division one A that just seems like
- 55:38Speaker 1: it would be such a cool My sister went to Alabama,
- 55:42Speaker 1: and so I went to a few games with her.
- 55:44Speaker 1: We went to Alabama, LSU incredible, Like Holy Cross Temple
- 55:49Speaker 1: doesn't holy Cross Tousand State. Yeah, it's it's something else
- 55:56Speaker 1: down there. I think between like the tailgates, like the
- 55:59Speaker 1: atmosphere in the game and the band, it's just oh yeah,
- 56:02Speaker 1: it's it's it's life. I mean, you know, like you
- 56:05Speaker 1: think of Atlanta, and Atlanta's got some good sports teams,
- 56:08Speaker 1: but nothing comes close to Georgia football, you know, yeah,
- 56:12Speaker 1: you know, it's just weird around here, is you don't
- 56:14Speaker 1: college football isn't big here, like I mean, you have
- 56:16Speaker 1: certainly little pockets of people who are passionate about their
- 56:19Speaker 1: own small school up here, but it's just it just
- 56:21Speaker 1: seems like such a part of the culture in the
- 56:22Speaker 1: south of of who's your team? What are you doing Saturday?
- 56:26Speaker 1: What's your tailgate operation? Like? Yeah, you grow you grow
- 56:29Speaker 1: up thinking I'm going to Georgia or I'm going to Texas.
- 56:32Speaker 1: You know that real hatred. Yeah, yeah, it's like down
- 56:38Speaker 1: south I feel like you're just you see everyone has
- 56:40Speaker 1: like to stickers, flags flying from their cars. I'm like, wow,
- 56:43Speaker 1: you know, it's football season. The closest for me was
- 56:45Speaker 1: when Doug Flutie and BC one. That's when the Cotton Bowl,
- 56:48Speaker 1: like that was Yeah, I mean we got a little
- 56:50Speaker 1: excited about that. You know, that was the only time
- 56:52Speaker 1: that that college football really even ding my radar maybe
- 56:55Speaker 1: a little bit. Then again, when Glenn Foley was good
- 56:57Speaker 1: and uh, who's that tight end that Pete Mitchell was
- 57:00Speaker 1: another one too. Yeah, yeah, I think it's more like
- 57:03Speaker 1: college hockey up here, that's right. But even that is
- 57:06Speaker 1: like you know this, there's a handful of people atmosphere,
- 57:09Speaker 1: go to the bean pot, don't get me here. Hello, Yeah,
- 57:13Speaker 1: I mean a lot of There are four colleges that
- 57:16Speaker 1: could be played on the same night and all of
- 57:17Speaker 1: them will have five thousand people at it. So college
- 57:20Speaker 1: hockey is a big dealer, and it's also he's exaggerating, No,
- 57:24Speaker 1: I'm not. Yeah, BUBC, Northeastern, Harvard could all be playing
- 57:28Speaker 1: on the same night and all have good crowds, but
- 57:31Speaker 1: they don't. They don't consistently draw that come on North
- 57:34Speaker 1: Eastern to Harvard's place is a little smaller. They don't
- 57:37Speaker 1: not every game. I didn't say every game. I said
- 57:40Speaker 1: on any given Friday night. Yeah, you're gonna have four
- 57:45Speaker 1: to six thou. This is not a college sports town.
- 57:48Speaker 1: It's not. But what I'm telling you is college hockey
- 57:50Speaker 1: here is the best college hockey in the country. Yeah.
- 57:53Speaker 1: We don't play football here. We stink. Yeah, so people
- 57:56Speaker 1: know that this is not a good level of college football.
- 57:59Speaker 1: That's why b see is irrelant. A lot of good
- 58:01Speaker 1: college players come out of New England for hockey, for hockey.
- 58:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, heck yeah, you're looking at one
- 58:07Speaker 1: right here. But again, it's the best conference in college hockey. Yeah,
- 58:12Speaker 1: which it's the highest level, but it's hockey. It's irret
- 58:17Speaker 1: but it's hot. That's the difference. Yeah, it is hockey. Yeah,
- 58:19Speaker 1: it's a niche sport. Hockey is not for everybody. Do
- 58:22Speaker 1: you get that? But anyway, congratulations to Tamara and who
- 58:25Speaker 1: knows what this could lead to. We never know. See, Yeah,
- 58:28Speaker 1: this is exciting. So no, no off weekend for you
- 58:32Speaker 1: in labor day, No, yeah, no off weekend. Yeah. Maybe
- 58:36Speaker 1: I'll be able to steal something off someone's grill that weekend. Yeah,
- 58:40Speaker 1: all right. Web radio at Patriots dot com is the
- 58:43Speaker 1: email address. We got emails coming in. Uh. This one
- 58:47Speaker 1: is from David and Bethlehem, and he wants to know
- 58:51Speaker 1: what we've seen from man when you he said he
- 58:54Speaker 1: looks slow? Who could take his spot didn't win? Who
- 58:57Speaker 1: could take over? Oh, I don't know. I mean for
- 59:02Speaker 1: when Yahnykaj, I thought did a good job today. I
- 59:04Speaker 1: thought there was a difference in the offensive line play
- 59:07Speaker 1: compared to yesterday, justin Haran really struggled. And I would
- 59:10Speaker 1: have thought, and I probably still think that Haran had
- 59:13Speaker 1: the hedge as the swing tackle. But Cojut was better
- 59:16Speaker 1: today than Haran was yesterday. So maybe he's injecting himself
- 59:20Speaker 1: into that battle the guards. I mean, Arlington Hambright is
- 59:24Speaker 1: the next guy up, but I don't think he's the end.
- 59:26Speaker 1: I don't think so either. I mean, it feels like
- 59:28Speaker 1: they they were playing with that a little bit the
- 59:31Speaker 1: last couple of days, though. It seems like it's just
- 59:33Speaker 1: un when you in there. And I think he's been
- 59:34Speaker 1: pretty good too, so that might happen. I know everybody's
- 59:38Speaker 1: curious about scheam change and all that, but I just
- 59:41Speaker 1: would like to see Michael when you get a chance
- 59:43Speaker 1: to really play. I mean, we were so high on
- 59:44Speaker 1: him two years ago, and you know, I mean, certainly
- 59:47Speaker 1: things look better last year with Ted Carris, and that's
- 59:49Speaker 1: probably why they went that direction. But I'd just like
- 59:52Speaker 1: to see him get a chance because he was really
- 59:54Speaker 1: after that first season, you felt like you really had
- 59:55Speaker 1: to find with him, and now it almost feels like
- 59:58Speaker 1: he's stuck in the middle and doesn't have a place
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: right now. Russell and Arkansas writes in he said yesterday
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: the Pat McAfee show, old friend of the Patriots Darius
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Butler said that the offense struggling in camp isn't surprising
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: because it's a controlled environment and there isn't a lot
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: of scripting for success and practices in New England, if
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: that makes any sense. If you want to watch the clip,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: it starts around forty nine minutes and ends at fifty
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: two minutes. So he went on about three minutes about
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: it on YouTube. Well that's the whole thing I mean.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: And I don't want to make this sound like, oh,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: the coaches will figure it out, but I just think
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: in a game plan situation and they can probably scheme
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: up enough to make it competent. I don't think it's
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: really competent consistently out there. But that's why I still
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: feel like, ultimately at the end of the day, you
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: might say at the end of the season, the offense
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: was better than the defense that you know they're able
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: to start, all right, we'll get them with this when
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: we can, you know, scheme this one up, I mean,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: but I think it's a question too of I think
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: that's what Josh was excellent at. No one wanted to
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: catch teams with that kind of stuff and how to
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: get around his weaknesses and work with what he had.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: And that's why I'm less convinced that they have the
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: pieces to be a really good offense because I think
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: that you're exactly right. When they'll have success, they'll be
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: scheming it up and catching guy. But when you're just
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: lining up and playing in camp, you're not winning more
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: often than not because I don't think you have the
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: pieces to do it. But I think I think it's
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Miami's implementing a whole new scheme and they're raving about it.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: But to me, it's notable when a guy like Butler,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Darius Butler says this, he's played on a couple of
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: different teams, so he knows and he says, in New
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: England they don't script for success in practice, and that's
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: something that we have no doubt about that and do
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: other teams, and we would say that maybe today they
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: did a little bit. Well that was I don't want
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: to say that, that's what I say. No, no no, no,
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: because I'm just speculating, right, it could maybe today they said,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: you know, we don't script for may today, let's do
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: a little bit to make the offense feel good about themselves. Yeah,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: you know, they brought in Foxborough High School's defense, and guys,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: I did think out of Bill's press conference today, it's
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: like a lot of those plays that you got, you
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: guys thought were bad offensive plays, Like sometimes it wasn't.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: It wasn't just like the defense like did something outstanding.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: It was you know, yeah, one thing went wrong and
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: then that made our offense look bad. It wasn't necessarily
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: like the whole like Max Fall. It wasn't all Max Fall.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: It wasn't all this person's fault. Sometimes we're just trying
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: to see it break down and what would happen. It
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: isn't that worse. I mean, when it's not just one
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: guy's fault. It's a variety of it. And his quote
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: to me, and that's why I use the quote sometimes
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: let me read it because I don't want to paraphrase him.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: Sometimes good plays aren't good play. Yeah, sometimes like the
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: good we all have things we can improve on. There's
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: there's some places the quarterback could play better. There's some
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: places the quarterback is right and there's a breakdown in protection.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: There's some places that the quarterback is right and there's
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: a breakdown in the road that to me is worse. Yeah,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: that means you're running the gamut and things that are wrong. Yeah,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: it might only be one thing on every play, but
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: it's a different But how do you do it well?
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: What was the problem last year at the beginning of
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: the season. Mistakes just every game it seemed like they're
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: turnovers or penalties or just dumb mistakes. A lot of it, right,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: a lot of it, And I mean to be honest,
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: there's been some of it in camp here too, starting
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: with you know, Trent Brown yesterday on the first play
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: a practice, which you know, we were talking a little
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: bit about it, but it's just that was such a
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: bad way to start practice, and I think you know,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: you talk about fast starts. I think I heard the
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: coaches kind of yelling about fast starts today. I think
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: it's all all connected. And that's something we saw last
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: year too, where when they came out slow and they
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: didn't have it and the other team kind of got
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: it to him early, it was hard for them to
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: really come back and make that push. Other than the
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Houston game, that was the only time they really came back.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: It's like shocking for us because they're always, like historically
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: so disciplined. Yeah, and then to not see it right
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: Neil and new Brunswick, this is an insane question. But
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: in light of eight straight training camp casts of offense
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: stinks talk against the defense that still needs to force
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: a punt, is there any chance the Patriots need to
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: be kicking the tires and Jimmy Garoppolo No, no, no, no,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: but he did say it was insane. Uh, it would
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: have to be after he was released or a trade
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: in which the forty nine is retained some salary. I
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: want Mac to succeed, but if he can't, Jimmy is
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: a guy who does win games and knows the Patriots
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: and the Shanahan systems, which seems to be something our
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: current guys don't. Jimmy, if Mac went down, I remember when,
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: Oh no, that was Fox right, they did a whole
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Jimmy Garoppolo thing. I don't know where that came. It
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: was the Fox Sunday Morning show. That funny that guy
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: that's supposed to be funny on that show did a
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: whole thing with Jimmy Garoppolo. If Mac were to go down,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: I would I wouldn't be opposed to it. I've always
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: liked Jimmy g but I think it's Max team and
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: you don't need him kind of breathing down his neck
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: or anything like that. And I think Bailey's appy's look
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: pretty good. I mean, if you signed Jimmy Garoppolo, he's
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: going to be your starter. Yeah, at least for a year. Yeah,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: I mean Hoyer. Yeah. Now, Brian and Brian and Indiana
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: writes in we've been hearing about offensive struggles all camp.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: I know it's a stretch to say now, but if
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: our offense is mediocre or bad in an offensive league
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: all year, I think most likely Mac Jones's next year
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: will be with his third offensive coordinator. Three O season.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: Three years would be rough on any quarterback. In my opinion,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: how bad can Bill screw up this franchise before we
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: let him go? Wow, well, technically there is no offensive coordinator.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: We've had so many great players league because Bill didn't
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: think they could no longer play at a championship, but
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: clearly doesn't hold himself to the same expectations. Wow, that's
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: Brian and Indiana. He doesn't well, I mean, I you know,
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: people on his side of the street have you know,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: every reason to be upset. I mean, I think he's
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: been pounding this druma for a while. And you know,
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: even as somebody who generally gives Bill Belichick still the
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: benefit of the doubt, you know, it hasn't looked great.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: And again, to go back to the points, just with
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: Patricia running around doing different stuff, it's just it doesn't
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: seem like the best operation right now in terms of,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: you know, having multiple coaches, and you know, it just
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: feels like they've been bleeding guys out, losing talent, losing coaches,
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: you know, and and and now it's just it's kind
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: of Bill standing alone with with Maddy p and Joe
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Judge and they're trying to figure it out, and I'm
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: still holding out hope that they can do it. But
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: I totally get why Brian feels the way he does
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: and why he might be growing pessimism about the season
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: right now. One thing I'll say, you know, I don't
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: know what this means, but like from Patricia and Judge,
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: I don't see any like panic on the field. I
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: don't see any frustration. I don't see any yelling, you know,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: palms up in the air. I don't see that. And
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: to me, that's a good thing. Yeah, yeah, I saw.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: I mean, did you see Joe Judge yesterday walking off
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: the field kind of give him back a little pep
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: talk and give him a little like, you know, hitting
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: the shoulder pads as they're walking. I think a couple
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: of players also kind of went up to Mac as well,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: which you know, I'd love not to have to like
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: constantly pick him up and have him be the one picking.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: People think he's been better at it, but he has been. Yeah,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: I mean, the arms are the arms are flailing. Everyone.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Mac is different. I'm talking about the coaches. Oh no,
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: I know, yeah, but last year we saw a lot
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: of that from Mac and we haven't seen as much
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: this year now, and and it still just feels like
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: he's a little bit torn because I think he is
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: a fun, loving guy that that enjoys being on the field,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: and you know, it's just kind of a contrast between
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: they have like a bad period and it doesn't really
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: go great and we're all kind of grumbling, and you
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: know then you see him trying to keep the guys loose,
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: and you know, it's just it's it feels like it's
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: a mental battle right now to kind of balance hard
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: work and you know, maybe being frustrated, but also trying
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: to stay positive and trying to stay the course and
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: trying to feel like we're building towards something. And I mean,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: today wasn't like, oh my god, they got it. You know,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: I think we saw some glimpses and glimmers of hope,
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: but that's what they were. They were. You know, it's
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: it's it's got to come back, I think on Thursday
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: and then going into next week into practice, like you
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: have to see them build off of this, because if
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: they have another practice like they had yesterday, all this
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: good will that you kind of feeling coming out of
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: this practice will be gone. Christian in Austria, he says
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: before training camp started I thought the offense was in
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: okay shape and the defense would struggle. From all the
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: reports I've seen so far, it appears to be the
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: other way around. I know, Fred, you downplayed the role
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: of the coordinators, but can we really be surprised that
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: the offense is disorganized with Laurel and Hardy leaving it?
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: I mean, I just don't think that's fair. Also, do
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: you think Barmore has the potential to be the next
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Richard Seymour? And do you think about Jonathan Jones replacing
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: d mac as the free safety next year? Jonathan Jones,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: I have people have talked about that a little bit.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't really I don't really see it.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: I mean, I know, I know the size doesn't really
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: matter as a free safety, but it's just like your
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: last line of defense is a tackler. He's just, you know,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: like a five foot nine guys, And I know everybody
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: wants to rip on Judge in Patricia and I don't know,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: maybe they won't be successful as offensive coaches, but I
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: you know, when you rise to the level in the
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: NFL to be asked to be a head coach, you
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: must have done something right. And they failed as head coaches,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: There's no doubt about it. So did Pete Carroll, so
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: did Bill Belichick. You know, I'm not worried about those
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: like based on practice, but like you tell me, you
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: think it would be great if Dan Dan Campbell was
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: on staff. No, okay, well he rose to the level
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: of a head coach. Who you don't think he's a
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: very good coach. But no, whoa whoa? WHOA hold on now,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: I just said if he was on staff. I know.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: I never said that Dan Campbell was a back. He
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: was a bad head coach, or seems to be, but
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: he was probably a good coach to get that. No, No,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: you just said, you know, to rise to the level
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: of a head coach. And I said, would you be
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: feeling good if Dan Campbell was on the staff and
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: he said no, not as a head coach. I didn't
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: say he's a head coach. I said if he was
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: a linebackers coach. Maybe do you answered the question when
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: I did? You gave me the answer I wanted the first.
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: I think I think Pogano was a joke as a
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: head coach, but I think he wasn't think I do
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: he was awful. He was awful, but he was probably
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: probably free straight. He probably did he probably did something
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: right to be asked to be a head coach, and
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: he probably hit his ceiling, his glass ceiling, you know,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: to beat cancer too. I mean, well, that's that's a
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: whole difference. No, Pocano was a terrible head coach. Well,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: we'll see tonight on HBO. We got Hard Knocks premiering,
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: so well, I guess we'll get the full Dan Campbell
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: experience today. We get to get to check out what's
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: going on. I see some of the previous day. On
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: the way up, we're gonna buy the knee cap off,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: all right, and we're gonna stand up, and then it's
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: gonna take two more shots to knock us down, all right.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: And on the way up, we're gonna take to your
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: other knee cap. Right. That's Dan Campbell head coach for
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: more gems. No, I think I I think people don't
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: understand how tough the NFL is. Yeah, you know, to
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: be a coach. I mean I get your points, and
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: I get that. You know, Matt Patrician and Joe Judge
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: know a ton about football and certainly can do it.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: I just wonder I said to Paul up Top. I'm like,
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: is there any way that Matt Patricia can have a
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: successful season this year? It just feels like he's kind
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: of set up to fail because if the if the
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: pass protection is bad, if the run blocking is bad,
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: if the offense isn't like coordinated well and not calling.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: I mean, people go nuts about play calls as it is.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: I mean things like under his under his stead that
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: you can blame him, I know, but if if, but
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: if the offense is good, he will get some credit
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: for it, and they'll be like, you know what he was,
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: he wasn't bad. Maybe I think that's probably he's already
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: coming here, like digging himself out of the Detroit hole,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: so coming in with that reputation. But I mean, don't
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: I don't know. I think if the offense is a
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: good offense, then I think, Okay, it wasn't as bad
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: as we thought it was going to be. Because people
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: are just like I'm saying right now, I'm not blaming
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: any of this on Matt Patricia or Joe Joe. I'm
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: saying practice. I mean, people like that last email, I
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: would think they're Laurel and Hardy. I mean Laurel and
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: Hardy is an abject failure if that's who they are, Yeah,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: you know, and I agree with pause point, though, I mean,
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: if that's that's the greater point is like he's been
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: put in this position, like I don't think if you
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: ask Matt Patricia what he want to do when he
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: got here that like, oh, I'd like the coach offensive
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: line while also kind of being the offensive coordinator in
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: you know, trying to help Matchet. Like it's just a
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: lot on his plate and it's apparent watching practice. So
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: I but I'm with Paul and that I think it
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: goes to the top. And you know how this was
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: initially structured, and you know, it's it's you want to
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: do it this way. You've earned it. You can try,
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: but if it doesn't work, it's not gonna work, you know.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: And and right now it's it's it's hard to have
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: confidence in it. There's just so many new pieces in it. Well,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: I mean, okay, so you know, Jarard writes in and
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: he's from Virginia and he's talking about the Badard piece
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: from yesterday about how Bill always wanted to change things up,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: and you know, uh, Ivan fears and Josh and Dante's
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: you know, push back on that, and then he says,
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: others have speculated that Patricia and Judge don't know enough
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: of the old offense to teach or run it. What
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: do you think guilty of that? What do you think
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: of these theories about why Bill would have bannedon a
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: twenty year successful offensive scheme that Mac understood last year?
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: And if either are likely true, should mister Kraft start
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: moving forward with the post Bill succession plan. I think
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: part of it is they're not necessarily doing away with
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: the old system. I think they're trying to implement elements
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: of another system to complement it. If that makes any sense,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: it does, I think, But can you can you do both?
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: Can you be a wide zone team? Says that's what
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: they were in twenty and eighteen when they won the
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Super Bowl? Is that right? I ran wide gap? I mean,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: I'm just going off at this story that Karen wrote. Yea,
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: And I mean, I'm sorry. Kavin's the best in the business.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: He's a great reporter, and she she had Dante opened
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: up to him about the toss crack outside zones that
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: they ran a lot of It was with two backs,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: which at the time, Dante says, you know, no one's
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: running two backs as as much as we were, so
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: these kinds of things, and they ran gap inside and
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: he thinks that you can, you can do that, and Mike,
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: I think a couple of weeks ago, brought up a
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: point actually I think Evan did too, about you're gonna
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: see games that have entirely different looks to them too,
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: because there's such a game plan oriented team. So you're
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: gonna get a team that maybe is better suited for
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: the the wide zone stuff to run it against. And
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: then you're gonna get teams that they penetrate too much
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: to do that against, and they're gonna go different ways. Well,
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: I'm thinking specifically about the offensive line here. Can can
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: you can you you know, go from game to game
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: and do different things like that as offensive line. I mean,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: I'm just playing again, I know I'm but we always
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: hear from offensive lineman. We just like to, you know,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: tell us the way you want us to play. And
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: we like doing that, you know, um like, because they're
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: different styles of playing offensive line. And I will blow
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: back a little bit at something and I said this
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: to you this morning that dot they said, you know,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: it's like, well, we were able to run the wide
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: zone stuff, you know really well, you know, depending on
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: the tight end we had and when we had Rob Gronkowski.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: You know'm like, yeah, exactly. This is why I don't
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: think they have the pieces to be a great offense,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: because I don't think they have the talent to be
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: a great offense. You're talking about the tile use Check
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: and George Kittle. You know that that's the Shanahan run game,
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: and I mean and Shanahan, like I've done more and
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: more kind of deep dies into this whole thing over
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: the last few days, and like you know, they do
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: all the other stuff too, you know, it's just the
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: original like wide zone like that was all they wanted
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: to do. That's what we're gonna rep That's what we're
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: gonna do. And as it's evolved, you've got Sean mcvagh
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: putting twists on it, You've got Shanahan having twists on
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: it with you know, use Check and Kittle, and I think, like,
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: you know, I think we might be getting caught up
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: in the weeds a little bit too much, and maybe
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: just saying they kind of got rid of the fullback
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: and they're trying to get a little bit more athletic
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: than having a fullback on the field. I don't. I mean,
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: I don't think that there's anybody here who's watching Patriots
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: or the last years after James Devlin got you know,
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: God bless him, like you know, they felt like, man,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: we need more Yakob Johnson out there, we need more fullback,
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Like that's the I think there was a theory of oh,
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: we're going to try to overpower smaller offenses, but now
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: it's like, we gotta get faster, and that's what I
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: think is intriguing. Pierre Strong, a guy we should probably
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: bring up who's kind of increased his workload a little bit.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: Seemed like Kevin Harris was getting a lot of carries
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: early in camp. Now that Pierre Strong is healthy, he's
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: getting some carries, so maybe we'll see him. But another
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: guy breakaway speed, get a gap and is gone. And
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: if you can get that going, you know, you're faster,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: you're more explosive. I think those are the things they're
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: really aiming for more than just hey, we're gonna have
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: wide zones, are kind of base runs, like I just
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: I don't know, I think that it's it's probably more
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: complicated in some senses, but also much simpler in other
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: senses of what they're actually trying to do and how
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: they're trying to go about it. So, Paul, I have
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: a question. So, since you don't think they have the talent,
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: do you think that they're trying to build an offense
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: around the talent that they do have, even though it's
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: not you know obviously well, I mean, obviously you have
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: to do with you know, the best thing you can't.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: But I think that they're going to have to rely
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: on like Mike said, you know, and this is why
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Belichick is so good. You rely on your game planning
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: and figuring out matchups and weaknesses of other teams, and
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: you find ways to get the ball in your playmaker's hands.
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: And I think, um, you know, Agalore and Thornton can
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: put some pressure on you in terms of speed, and
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: I think Myers and Borne can put some pressure on
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: you with their consistency and being able to get open
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: and move the chains. I think that's what they did
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: last year to an extent um, and I think that
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: they'll have to continue to do that now. They also
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: want to run the ball, and I think if you
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: run the ball effectively, you can at least chew clock
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: and and and move the chains that way. They did
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: that reasonably well at times last year too, But I
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: don't think that they have the pieces to be dominant
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: offensively now. I think they got to get the run
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: game going because I mean, Alice Gibbs talked about it's
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: much easier to replace offensive linemen this kind of system,
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: it's much easier to place running back. So how many
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: times did you see in Denver a new running back?
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: Who's this guy always got thirteen hundred yards? If they
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: can get it down and and and everybody knows what
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: they're doing, I think that they have the potential, especially
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: with Stevenson and Strong, who seemed like two particular really
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: good fits for this kind of thing that you know,
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: maybe that's something they can they can lean on. Um
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: let's go. Let's see web radio at Patriots dot Com.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: Chris with a T. I. A. N. Writes in Dog
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: Days a Camp for Paul very ornery today. Quote, why
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: are we assuming they're going to move the ball between
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: the twenties? That was a joke, Jake Bailey Ice that
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: leg all right? That was that was Paul snark. It's
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: it's getting to all of us though. I mean it's uh,
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: I mean, it's a little tetting to me because I'm
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: not one of these guys that writes home after a
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: great practice. And I'm not gonna sit here and tell
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: you the sky is following after you know, a handful
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: of bad ones. I have to see my dearest Beth
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: so wonderful today at them. The problem with our captain Andrew,
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: the problem with our our lieutenant, our frame of reference
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: is that for twenty years, we really never had a
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: bad training camp. Yeah, you know, like bad training camp
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: was a couple series where Brady was pissed off. Brady
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: yells at the lineman and and wouldn't let them take
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: him out, and he would run it again. That was
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: like a bad day. That's because the ball hit the
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: ground once, right, That was the definition of a bad
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: practice back then. It hasn't look I'm not trying to
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: tell you what's looked good. I'm not trying to tell
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: you but this overreacting because we're not. But again, it
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: hasn't looked. I wonder what like the other thirty one
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: training camps look like, if you know, other than with
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers and like Pat Mahomes. I wonder if like
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: other teams are having struggles too, and that's a normal
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: thing in the summer. We're just not used to it.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: I mean even am I just my fourth camp. You know,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: being on the inside here, it's like it's jarring. There's
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: not these star players anymore. There's not Dante hiow Er,
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: there's not Tom Brady, there's not Rob Gronkowski, there's not
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: Julian Edelman, Like, all those guys are gone, and now
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: you're like Christian Barmore might be good, or till On
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Thornton might be good. You know, you're starting to sell
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: yourself on new guys. And I think that's as jarring
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: as anything. It's just looking out there and seeing like
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: there's not a bunch of Super Bowl champs out there anymore.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: There are guys that are trying to prove it, trying
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: to pick up that mantle of the quote unquote Patriot
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: way and you know, do things the way that they've
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: been done, but there's no guarantee that they're going to
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: be able to do it like that, and we're all
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: kind of waiting with bated breath anthem manager expectations. Yeah right, yeah,
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: you have to show used to just like hell you know,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: mess around and end up in the AFC Championship. I
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: mean that was the story for you know, a good
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: portion of the twenty tens. I mean that pretty much
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: every year you know they were they were in there.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: No matter how much you guys I'm sure, yelled at
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: each other about various aspects, ultimately came down to one
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: or two plays in the AFC Championship and then one
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: or two plays and what was it. It was just
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: a matter of who they were going to play in
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: the AFC Championship, yeah, yeah, yeah, and whether or not
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: you were going to host it, right right. We were
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: pretty obnoxious, but it was true, they're not gonna host it.
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: And it's like I say, like, it's not necessarily like
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: people mistake, Like I'm telling you right now, if they
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: played really well Thursday, offensively, get ready for a cascade
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: of what do you think the media is just blowing
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: everything out of proportion. Like it's like when they were
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: going into seasons and you knew before the season started
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: that it was only a matter of who's hosting the
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: AFC Championship game. That's what was happening at the time.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: It wasn't because we were being obnoxious. It was because
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: the Patriots were that good. You know, in twenty fourteen,
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: twenty fifteen, twenty sixteen, you knew there's no way that
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: the brock Oswiler Texans were coming to Foxborough to beat
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: the Patriots right in a playoff game. Yeah, Or Marcus
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: Mariota was coming in with Tennessee to win a playoff.
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: It wasn't happening. No, So we told you it wasn't happening,
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: just like right now, we're telling you it just wasn't
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: gonna happen. Doesn't look that. It was more about just
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: like I just these five guys can't get hurt, Like
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: just these five guys like on our team, Like that's
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: really what you were worried about your own guy's getting hurt.
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: And just random little twists. We used to have a
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: thing here called the double buy, So you get to
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: buy because you were one or two seed, and then
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: you had the second by because the team that was
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: coming in were like Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow, right, I
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: know how young you are. The double by was initiated
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: by me when Tim Tebow came to play the Patriots
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: into eleven. Yeahs is going to be like diamonds in
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: a rough in the rough situation where it's really rough,
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: but there's gonna be some diamonds. Oh, I think people
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: will emerge. Yeah, I don't like the opportunity opportunity which
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: one happens. I said there's gonna be some diamonds in
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: the rough, and someone well, I mean, but that is.
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: But you know, it's fun to see new players kind
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: of rise. You just hope that it happens as a
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: team and that you know they're not dreadful like that
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: they're good. You know, I have no not I'm being honest,
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: I have no fear of them being dreadful. Bell check
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: us too good of a coach. Yeah, yeah, like they
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: will figure out a way. And I said this to you, Mike,
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: when we were walking to practice in two thousand. The
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: Patriots didn't even have Fred You remember this. Yeah, they
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: didn't even have fifty three players to keep at the
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: start of the season. And this is a quote from Belichick.
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: We didn't feel like we had fifty three NFL players.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: That's why they didn't have enough guys on the roster
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: to start. And that team they ended up going five
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: and eleven. All right, they easily could have won three
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: or four more games because they were so well coached,
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: like they just found a way to have a scheme
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: and stay in it. They had no talent, yeah, but
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: they just kept scrapping. They have more talent now than
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: they did that. Oh yeah. I just think this season
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: will be a great, a great test of it because
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: I don't really ever recall a murderers row of teams
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: like this that feel like, you know, it's not like
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: OA where we can just beat the bad teams and
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: still be in the playoff hunt. It's like this year,
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: if you just beat the bad teams, you're not even
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: sniffing the playoffs yet. You know, like to even sniff
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: the playoffs, you're gonna have to beat some good teams.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: So that's, uh, it'll be an interesting test to that.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: And you know, how does it all come back together
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: to deal with all these different offenses that are just
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: ruling the game right now. And I said to Paul,
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: I mean, they gotta they did a little stat look up.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: They gotta face eight of the top ten receivers from
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: last year, you know, including three of them they're going
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: to see twice between Wattle and Hill and Miami and
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: Digs in Buffalo. So I mean just every good receiver
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: pretty much is coming in here this year's you know,
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: and they got to deal with them, all right, eight
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: five five past five hundred is the ticket a hotline.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: Let's go to Spi and Fresno. What's up speak Yeah, handwringing.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: I'm I'm a little nervous here with the way things
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: are shaking out in camp. But you guys are making
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: good points that so maybe some of that's the product
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: of like being spoiled for twenty years and we're not
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: used to things not looking quite right it's this time
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: of year. But it's it's like Mike was saying, that's
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: that's the that's the murderer's row, and I'm worried about
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: that five and twelve season instead of like the maybe
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: let's planning on originally. Yeah, I don't know, I don't know.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: Too early to freak out. Yeah, I think so, It
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: definitely too early to freak out. It is, but you know,
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: this is the world coaster. You got to be honest
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: with what we're seeing, and you know this is it's
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: it's just it hasn't been good. And I mean, I
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: don't think you need to look very far to see
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: everybody kind of seeing the same exact stuff. Uh Tamara's
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: leaving us, Evan Evan Lazar, the Great Evan Lazar is
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: joining us, the great. Yeah, turn on your mind, Michael,
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: great one. Thank you for that introduction. What does nine
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: keene I see on the gridiron? Thanks for the call, spy.
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: So Evan, how are you doing? I'm doing well? Yea.
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: So how long have you been here now? One week? Over?
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: Two weeks? Two weeks? Time flies? How's it going? It's
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: going great? Yeah, loving it and enjoying it. You just
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: came from writing in practice? What do you what do
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: you see? Paul thinks that they may have scripted it
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: a little bit to make the offense feel good about
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: themselves today. I like that interesting. I think I didn't
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: say no, I didn't. I think the interesting thing came
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: after practice. For me. Today was a little bit of
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: a slower day, not as intense as what we saw yesterday,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: and mac Jones gave a pretty good answer. I asked
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: him about what's going on up front? You know, obviously
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: I'm not expecting him to take out the white board
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: and diagram what exactly is going on with the protections
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: and things like that, But He once again referenced a
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: different naz where he used different way of doing things
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: for them up front, and this I think is starting
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: to get to the point where if you listen to
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: all the players and what they're actually piecing it together,
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: what they're actually telling you, this offensive system is significantly
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: different than what we've seen them run in the past,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: from how they call things, how they tag things, how
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: they check things at the line of scrimmage on down.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: And at that point, you don't want to keep on
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: making that excuse right and say, oh, it's just new,
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: and you know you got to give them time. But
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: we're at that point in the season in training camp
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: where it is all very new and you do have
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: to give them some time. So in some respects the
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: results have to be there eventually, but for right now.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: Again another element of it, and he said, we got
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: to make sure that we don't have any free runners
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: to the quarterback, right. You just don't want guys coming
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: in completely unblocked. If somebody blows a block here or there,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: it's going to happen. It's football. The defensive players get
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: paid too. But he said that if everybody's hat on
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: a hat and I have time in the pocket, I'll
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: make the throws when we have to eliminate. Is the
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: times when there's guys coming in unblocked at the line
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: of scrimmage and we're not getting hat on a hat.
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: So another element of their offense that seems like a
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: work in progress because of the tweaks that they're making.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: You know, something that occurred to me, as you would
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: talk in Evan is you know, they have been running
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: the same offense for twenty years or so, and you know,
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: forget about Josh leaving and all that, but the fact
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: is that last year at least one player said the
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: Patriots are easy to defend, and maybe Bill says, you know,
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: we have been doing the same thing. Teams know us,
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: and we don't have Tom Brady to check out the
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: line and see a defense and have all the answers
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: and just do the right thing on every play. So
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: maybe we just need to change it because teams teams
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: know us too well, and you know, we've become easy
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: to plan for and defend well. But I also feel
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: like their kind of thing was that their game plan
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: offense and that they like to change and you know,
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: throw curveballs, and I probably go a little bit more
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: towards Paul's and to things of I just don't think
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: they had the guys really to continue to do whatever
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: they want, and you know, maybe they've been a little
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: bit more hamstrung. I guess we'll see if it's going
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: to be different a week intrigued because I think Thornton
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: has the kind of athleticism that demand's attention and he
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: looks like a you know it and we'll see it.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: There's a long way to go, but he gets open
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: and he has great hands and good like I should say,
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: good hands, great ball. Yeah. Um. And to Evan's point
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: about that was the part of the mac Jones quote
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: and Mike and I talked about it that really stuck
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: out was we just have to trust it at the
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: end of that, like, there's nothing to trust if you're
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: not doing anything different, Like there's no there's no question
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: that everybody's on the same I don't get this, but
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: you're doing if you're doing it the same, you know what,
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: you don't need to trust it fold right, right, Clearly
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: they're doing something different, right, and that's what needs to
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: be trusted. Yeah, that's what he's telling you. It's like
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: maybe maybe there's some reluctance. To me, he needs to
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: look in the mirror a little bit because I don't
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: think he trusts it. I think there are times that
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: he's looked very indecisive. You know, he talked about the
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: runaway guys. That hasn't always been the case. There have
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: been plenty at times, especially the last couple of days,
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: when he's looked. You saw one yesterday, Freddie, when Parker
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: was opening between two levels of the defense, and you're
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: just looking and looking and waiting and waiting. Tucks the
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: ball runs around. I think it was there. Yeah, I said,
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: trust what you said. Parker was wide open. He didn't
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: throw it. Yeah, that's easy for me to say from
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: the red level, right, you know, like if I'm out that,
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: I'm like anyway, Anthony even Delaware. If the offense poops
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: the bed during the season, does Bill give the keys
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: to Judge or does Bill take over play calling? Not
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: that I think it would happen, but does Bill have
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: the gonads to fire Patricia or Judge if things go
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: poorly or just wait till next year to hire someone
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: who knows what he's doing. Bill's not the kind of
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: guy in my He he doesn't give me the impression
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: of someone that makes those mid season changes like some
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: other teams have done, where you fight like Garrett, you know,
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: the Cowboys getting rid of Jason Garrett. I don't think
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: Bill would ever do that. I think he thinks they
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: could get where they need to go. Like I still
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: think he would be like, even though it hasn't worked yet,
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: will tack to something that will work. He might like changes,
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: but I don't think he would like no. But I
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: feel like he's too loyal to to kind of just
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: throw someone under the bus. Yeah, I mean, where does
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: he have to go? You know, if this goes terribly,
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: where does he have to go next year? Like, what
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: what do you do? Do you bring in Bill O'Brien
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: and fire map Patricia, Like go ahead, yes, in the
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: back of the back of the rooms. Didn't he kind
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: of do that last year with defense? What didn't he
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: just kind of step in and oh but he didn't.
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: He didn't start running the defense. He didn't fire anyone. Oh.
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: I don't think he said fire anybody. I think he said,
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: would he have to go nads to fire judge of Patricia? Well,
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: I thought he said to hand the keys to judge
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: said that earlier. Yeah, that's what I thought he was talking.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: Oh I could see him doing that. Oh okay, well
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: that's me. I'm talking about like firing stuff. I don't
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: know about firing, Like, I don't know who gets fired.
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: I mean, you like everybody people do all the time.
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: I know, but I think that's rare in the middle
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: of season. I just mentioned Jason Garrett and he didn't
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: get fired. No, but not by the Cowboys. He matter
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: of fact, he had to Joe Judge he got fired,
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: did Yeah? I think he just lost play calling, didn't he. No,
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: I think he got fired. I don't know. Maybe you're right,
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: but that's Joe Judge, that's your guy. But it's like,
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: even if it's a success, even like let's say it's
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: not that great, Like I'm sorry, even say the offense
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: is pretty good this year, pretty good, how do you
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: how do you change it again? How do you bring
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: in an offensive corner? You're kind of married to this
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: if that was pretty good? The guy who wrote in earlier,
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: you know, like you're staring at three and three years, right,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: that's we always talk about young quarterbacks who have to
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: go through that, and it's like it's not fair to
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: them that they have to go through all these coordinators.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: Can you imagine if they fire a guy like Garrett,
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: like like Judged it to Garret, like what you like?
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: What do you do? Like? Then what do you do well?
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: Judge took over? No, but I'm saying, like you you like,
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: so whoever you decided was the guy this year? Yeah?
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: Then you like, I agree with you. I don't ever
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: see this happening. But why you just fire Map Patricia right?
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: It does too many other things. You fire Joe Judge,
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: and you know it's just like, I agree with you.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: There's no way that's happening. Yeah, he might take the
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: keys away and give him to somebody else, But I think,
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: but I still don't see a scenario where next year
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: they say we're gonna bring an offensive line coach and
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: Matt You're gonna be the offensive coordinator Like that still
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: feels like a major stretch to me, even if they're
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: pretty good this year like it, I don't know, it's
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: just all it feels like they're down this path and
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: it's gonna be hard to get out of it. But
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: I do think you see on the defensive side of
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: the ball throughout training camp and look we don't actually
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: know who's running what and where and all that sort
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: of thing. But we've seen Bill Belichick as hands on
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: with the offense and as with the offense during practices
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: i've ever seen him. So that tells you that Steve
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: Belichick and Grade Mayo are the ones that are probably
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: running the defense. And the defense looks great. I mean,
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: the defense at least looks connected. They look like they're
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: one unit. So on that side of things, you say,
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: and maybe he hands the keys off to somebody else,
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: maybe they pivot or something like that. I think last
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: year we did see that on defense where all of
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: a sudden they come out after that Cowboys game, they
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: lose Jonathan Jones, you know, Ceedee Lamb scores the walk
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: off touchdown, and then zone for the next seven weeks.
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: I do think that there is a point in time,
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: and Belichick spoke about this yesterday during his press conference
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: where he said, yeah, we we evaluate in season, training camp,
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: but at some point in time, we'll put the plug
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: on anything. And I don't think that he's too stubborn
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: to pull the plug on something that's not working. I think,
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: just like I don't think he's married to this new
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: offensive system. I kind of agree with Badard and Felger
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: on that and disagree with Ted Johnson. I think I
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: think if he continues to, like well, they've talked about
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: it a lot, like Bill is demonstrated many times over
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: the years that he won't bang his head into a role. Yeah,
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: absolutely stupid, and I think he won't with this. If
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: if they get in like the middle of October and
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: it's just not working, yeah, he'll scrat He probably won't
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: even take him that long, right, it's not working. But
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: I kind with the conventional wisdom there that I think
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: Bill will adapt. Oh yeah, I think he always has.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: And I think they have some of the gap stuff
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: that they've done in the past. They have that in
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: their back pocket. They can always pull that back out,
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: and I really do think that eventually we might see
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: that in At times over the last couple of days,
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: we've seen more spread looks Mac and the shotgun spread
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: the field, and those elements always make him look more
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: comfortable than the under center stuff, which he doesn't have
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: as much experience with. So I think eventually the buck
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: always stops with Belichick, and he's going to have a
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: say that's beyond everybody else's in terms of the overall direction.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: But I just think it's really fascinating from mini camp
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: on to hear every single player talk about how different
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: this offense is to what they were running last year
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: in so many different ways. The receivers talking about it,
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: the line talking about it, the quarterback talking about protections
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: and mic points and things like that, changing how they
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: call things. And you know, there's a lot of times
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: where we would hear, for even from camp and about
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: how much they put on the quarterback to make sure
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: that everybody's pointed in the right direction upfront pre snap
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: when it comes to the blocking. So that's a lot
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: of onus on Mac Jones, and I think that he's
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: going through it a little bit right now in terms
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: of getting everybody had on it. The difference, though, is
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: in the spring it was, Oh, they're making things, simp,
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: We're gonna be able to play faster. Now it's really hard,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: That's what That's what they said all weeks. Yeah, like
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: especially the receivers, it's allowing us to play faster. Blah
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: blah blah blah blah. Yeah, you know, and it's been
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: a struggle. But you had one minor mistake. I want
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: to correct you, Evan, when you talk about Bill taking
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: over the defense last year and it was all zone
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: for the next seven you have to then say, and
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: then he gave it back at the end, he gave
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: it back getting bad because you have to Buffalo. You
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: have to understand, young man, that Phil Belichick has never
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: made a mistake. So when when when they weren't forcing
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: any punch against Buffalo twice, Bill Belichick wasn't running take
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: it back for jackson was making fun of the fans
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: now like you're just the fans. Yeah, it's like, it's
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: not just the fans. The Jacksonville Key's like, let me
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: take it back, just yeah, I got it. I got
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: it for this one. I got it for the Jets.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: I got it for the Jets Jacksonville and the ninety
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: eight mile hour win game in Buffalo. You got the
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: day after Christmas Buffalo game and the playoff game against Buffalo. Already,
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: I'm just laughed at thinking about like anytime you actually
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: heard like a Brady play call in the huddle and
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: like your brain is spinning because it just sounds like
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: a bunch of like you know, Calculus words be spending.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: Now it's probably just like toss left on two, toss
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: left on two, Like that's what their play calls are now,
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: like just literally like Madden offense, like that simplicity, Like
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't know. Hopefully it starts to
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: look better. But James Pettigrew, the most interesting Patriots fan
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: in the world, says Jesus, couldn't you have replaced Eric
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: with even years ago? E scale Wow? Nope. I hope
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: he's not listening because I'm quite just it's not listening.
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: I don't he was barely listening when he was sitting
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: sitting And maybe we could do this as a bit
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: during the bye week. Call Eric on the phone during
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: the show and do a quick quiz on like the
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: Patriots to any ideas the most basic questions we can
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: come up. Who's the starting running back? Eric? So we
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: had we had a big joke. I don't know if
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: he was. He was away when they signed Cam Newton,
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: and our big joke was when he came back, do
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: you think he'll know? Well? I do still watch the news. Yeah,
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna miss Fred needling him though. That was always
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: like funny. You just see Fred seeing opening and he
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: starts like and then he kind of go like like
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: look at him and be like, I'm gonna get him,
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: and then Eric would just like couldn't help it get
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: worked on. No, I'm not doing Eric's greatest hits. Uh,
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: Patton Ottawa, With everything we're hearing about the offense, what
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: do you think should be our goals for the upcoming preseason?
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: Do you think we need to look Uh? Do we
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: need to look at the preseason differently than we have
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: in the past. No, I just I mean personally, I mean,
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: and I don't want to spoil our keys to the
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: game that we had to submit, but I mean I
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: just want to see them put some plays together, put
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: a drive. I mean, if they put it. You know,
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: I don't know if Max gonna play or not, so
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: it's all relative. But I just think regardless, to see
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: a ten play drive by the offense where it's balanced,
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: they go down the field, they make some plays. It
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: looks clean, it looks in rhythm. I would feel better
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: that the system is being Is this just the second
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: year of three preseason or the third second second? So
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: you know, Bill learns and like we talked about earlier,
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: I think maybe he does handle personnel a little bit
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: differently now having one season of three under his belt
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: and knowing how that worked out. And they used to
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: never play at all in the first game. Yeah, no
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: one like, no one of any real significance played in
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: the first game. Now, I don't know if you have
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: that luxury, we'll see, maybe he'll but I mean in
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: games two and three they've always played well. But now
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: Game three is like Game four, but it isn't. No, see,
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: I think Game three is still Game three. Yeah, it
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: has to be, because you've got that big gap between
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: that first game. I think you have to wait. You
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: either have to treat game two like game three or
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: I you know what game three like game three? Yeah,
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: I want you to explain, in other words, what's the game,
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: what's the you know, what's the game where the Scrubs
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: get a chance. And it might be game one, Yeah,
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: you know it's it's definitely it might be Game one
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: where the Scrubs get all the chances. And I think
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: the second half of Game three was still that that game.
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: Maybe I'd like to see the rookies too. I mean,
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: I think Matt Marcus Jones should probably return a punter
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: two in this game, and that that would be interesting
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: to see, you know, with live tackling, see how how
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: how Quickie looks in space. And I want to see
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: the decision making on those guys, because it's one thing
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: to have some electricity to your game and be able
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: to offer that, but then can you go out? And
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: you know, I thought today they were really excellent, all
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: of those guys, Trey Nixon, h Marcus Jones, that like that.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: I think they had a and I think this was
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: also scripted. I think there were a lot of directional kicks.
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: Even the kickoffs were sort of sent in like a
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: corner and they had to run a good distance and
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: they handled them all flawlessly. Trade Nick Marcus Jones, I
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: don't know. I don't think I remember seeing him, but
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: JJ Taylor was one of them. Miles Bryant, I think Caughts.
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: I mean, I thought all of the returners today were
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: really shorthanded. That's what Bill's looking for in a game setting,
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: like not you know, the quick babble like or you know,
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: the run up, catch it on a fly by by
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: your fingernail like gunner and then get I was gonna
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: say the gunner thing was like jump in the air
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: right before you get tacked all right, break one for
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: eight yards and everybody gets excited. But you know, forget
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: about the cot of fumbles that he had to recover.
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: I guess the most dramatic ten yard games. I thought
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: he died three different times last season. I just was like,
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: is he gonna get out? How about the ball that
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: like went off his leg like out of bounds, like
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: you know, just using every pun against Pittsburgh. Give us
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: one right here and give us last training camp. I said,
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: Gunner Chefski's gonna be your breakout player this year. Everyone.
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: Every once in a while we swinging Missy even I thought,
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: you know he might do some looked quick. Yeah, um
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: let's see j K Jack Yeah, Jacket and Abba should
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: have kept Burrios right, I'm not in love with Hester's
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: better than Gunner. Oh yeah, but that's not saying he
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: seems to love him some Burrios too, Like he seems
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: one of those guys. Jacket and Abba. Which of the
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: following surprise cuts would be most likely? But he's got
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: like surprising cuts. Most likely Brian Hoyer to make room
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: for Bailey Zappy Yeah, j J. Taylor to make room
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: for Time Montgomery and A two rookie running bat that.
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: I don't think JJ Taylor would be a surprise cut.
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: I think Isaiah win would be a good quote unquote
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: surprise cut right now, especially after the last It could
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: be right, what's sick of this? I don't know, I
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: mean surprise healthy. That would be Bill Belichick's Eugene Chung moment.
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: Blink blink. You don't remember as before your I mean
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: not Belichick Parcels when he cut Eugene Chunk. That'd be
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: Belichick's moment like that where you take a guy highly
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: drafted just it doesn't matter who you are, you can
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: get cut. Parcels didn't draft him, so what did he care?
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: But he was like a second round pick. I don't
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: know what first round first didn't I know, but it
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: was it was a sign that I don't care where
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: you're drafted. I remember that's what was being written at
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: the time Freddie and his CUB reporter days. Sure, I
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: don't know if it's about Isaiah Wynn, if it's about
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: Jess and her on. But today with us right tackle
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: looked a little bit better. You have to say it
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: look better. Well, they're actually running the ball successfully. He's
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: look better. Yeah, right, off the right side on winning
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: and could Juice getting a good push. You know what
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: I didn't see but from Mac I didn't see just
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: run untouched around, which I saw like four times yesterday. Yeah, Um,
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: Dalton Key because he can't stay healthy, that's not a
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: surprise cut. He's done nothing, nothing three years. Um Nelson
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: had the lord to make room for Trey Nixon. No way, no, no,
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: I'll never say never, but I'd be very that would
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: be a surprisy surprise. That would be a surprise. I
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: think we go back to Dalton Keene for a second,
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: because I'm not gonna I'm not gonna pitch Dalton Keene
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: to you all right now. But at some point in
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: time there has to be somebody on the roster who
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: can play fullback back Smith. I don't think it's Johnny Smith.
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: I don't think you want your fourteen million dollars tight
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: end to be taking on linebackers in the hole consistently.
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: But if they think I want that guy doing it either.
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: If they get to October and this really isn't working,
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: the only pivot is to put a fullback back in
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: the in the offense right and if they don't have
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: anybody that can actually do that if they have to
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: go out and like tray back, sign some jag off
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: the street right everywhere. Some guy from Harvard who was
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: that they had a big one last year that they
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: signed from. I think he was drafted by Baltimore initially
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: from Michigan, Michigan Ben Mason, Ben Mason. He's probably kicking around.
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: Somebody working at a store tells me, you could find
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: a full back Dietrick Wise to make room for Henry
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: Anderson does on the team, um uh Gilani Tavai to
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: make room for Camera Groan. Nope, no, I keep on
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: way to wish something from camm Groan. And I don't
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: know if it's just them easing him in or kind
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: of don't want to him out there too much. I
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: don't know, but he has not made and I not
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: to pick on him, but he has not made one
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: notable play that I've been like, oh yeah, right and
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: came grown right, you know, like there's been no now
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: because we were told like this was a red shirt pick.
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: They know he's heard, but he's got some potential. That's
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: why we'll we'll draft him. And then they went got
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: ray Qua McMillan and Mac Wilson, and it seems like
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: those two guys are are, you know, kind of filling
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: the high tower Collins and vanoid at all um Juwan
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: Williams to make room for Marcus Jones and Jack Jones.
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: Stop it, that's he's gone. That's not a surprise. I
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: would not be a surprise. I think a surprise if
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: Jowan Williams made it in addition to those two, those
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: two alucks and finally Cody Davis to make room for
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: Joshua Bledsoe Paul would like that. That one's not outrageous. Yeah,
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: there's going to be. And we mentioned Hoyer at the top.
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: There's gonna be at least one, if not multiple veterans
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: that they know we're not going anywhere that don't have
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: to go through waivers because they're invested veterans that just
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: like they did last year with the Kickers and Hoyer,
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: and they do this every year. So Cody Davis could
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: he be one of those guys? Yeah, absolutely, because he's
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: not going far. What do you mean they don't have
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: to go through waivers. So if you're a vested veteran,
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: you don't have to go through waivers, right, So you
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: can just be a street When you get released by
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: the team, you're just a street free agent. You can
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: just sign anywhere. Oh yeah, yeah, so you did just
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: say just don't don't go anywhere. We're gonna we have
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: a roster spot for you signing the practice. I don't whatever,
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: but I think that. So you're saying that they wouldn't
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: get signed, Yes, I'm saying that, or at least there
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: would be some sort of an agreements. I think that
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: they've lost a lot of guys like that over the years.
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: Bolden is the one that stands out right with Miami
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: in two thousand nine. Other guys that they've lost in
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: similar ways. I know what you're saying now about the
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: waivers like that. The difference between Hill, you know, or
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: one of those. I mean, there's a chance, like if
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: Trey Nixon is somebody that you have an agreement ahead
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: of time and you tell the guy not to go,
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: then yeah, I think that's a dangerous game because we've
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: seen like Howyer like left but a lot of but
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: sometimes they just throw money and you can't say no, no,
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: I know, but it has happened in the past. Yeah,
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: I know you said, guy, I misunderstood him at first.
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: We're gonna this is just a temporary thing. We're gonna
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: sign you in a week or two. You know. Yeah,
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: but you've got to hope that someone doesn't come after them.
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: I know, yeah, I know, because I think, yeah, there's
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: been examples of guys getting I mean, I think Hoyer
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: is the clearing example. I think Indie throw them, throw
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: a bunch of money, and they were like they were
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: planning on resigning them, but they he couldn't turn the
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: money down. It's it's a risk, it's a risk. But
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: if the money's equal, the guy's like, oh, I'll just
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: stay here. I don't want to write minimums. But I
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: do think I think Bledsoe is not going anywhere. But
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: Cody Davis is a guy that is obviously a valuable
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: special team or that if they think that these kids
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: that they're you know the schoolers and you know Bledsoe
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: and you know these other guys that they've been said
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: Mitchell to Marcus. Mitchell is another one that's been doing
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: a lot of that stuff. If they think one or
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: two of these guys can fill some of those roles. Again,
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: that's what preseasons four. You know, put him out there,
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: let him call the protection protection. See if he does
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: it right, and if he does it right, you know
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: you got to give him a chance. Yeah, I think
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: we've had a lot of the like discussions about that
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: conflict of keep Bledsoe a guy that might actually play
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: defense for you as opposed to Cody Davis, who guess
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: reliable special teams player. Maybe Bledsoe misses a play or
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: two that Cody Davis would have made on special teams,
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: but is it worth losing Bledsoe to keep him? And
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: ultimately is that going to be the best decision? Josh
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: and Maine right soon. I've been listening to every podcast
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: now for a few months and save them for the
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: weekends when I'm working around the house. I love the
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: banter and find Paul to be the wittiest of you all.
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: Thanks a lot, this is true. Wrong must be from
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: me as a as a lifelong as a lifelong Saints fan,
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: This podcast helps me stay informed on my second favorite
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: pro team, and it's by far the number one football
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: radio show out there. That's agin Yeah, thanks for all
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: the entertainment. I'm looking forward to following the season with you.
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: If you want my opinion on a few things I
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: smashed the last slither of soap into the new bar.
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: Drew Brees is a top five all time quarterback, and
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: the back squad is the most important exercise the squad.
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: See he thinks Drew Brees is top five? Right there?
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: How I understand why? Yeah, let's yeah, let's let's he's
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: not top five. Let's put him in the Foxborough winter
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: for four games in a year and see how he
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: throws a football. I have a lot of respect for
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: Drew Brees, but he's not top I'm just going to
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: go off. I totally agree, and believe me, these guys
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: will tell you I've made that argument just off of
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: what he did where he did play. I don't think
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: he's a top five How many how many yards you
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: think prime Brady throws four in the Dome? Oh? God,
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: six thousand? Because I think he threw for a lot
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: of yards in bad weather. I think that was a
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: big advantage for him too. So does he have Belichick,
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: might have Sean Payton. He might have thrown for four
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: million yards. No, Um, I don't think this is anything
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: to do with Brady. Breeze to me, is a great quarterback,
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: but he's not manning. He's not Rogers. He's not Brady,
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: He's not alway, He's not in that class. Auto gram
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: top ten, I can hear, top five is a little.
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: That's that's you have to ask him about auto gram
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: slinging Sammy Bossy, I mean no, not even in the
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: same sentence, right, Sammy Barr, Johnny utes from Hollywood. He's
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: he's a big He's just Trump. He loves, he loves,
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: he loves sending us clips from mother from out of
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: town news like you know, about to make bad. Yeah,
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: he loves that. Why was Patriots unfiltered cynics of Josh
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: McDaniel's head coaching aspirations? Who was who was the cynic
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: of that? Why was what? Why were we cynics of
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: his coaching? Head coaching aspirations? Josh McDaniels. I mean he
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: explicitly said multiple times his goal was to be a
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: head coach. Again, I mean, is he saying that we
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: didn't think he'd be a good one? I have no,
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, second time around, he could
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: be fine. Yeah. How much will the franchise miss Josh
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: McDaniels play calling ability? Fred Kirsch stated back in April
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: that he believed this coaching will make additional upgrades and
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: it was not a time to panic. Fred. It doesn't
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: look good for the Patriots season. Boy, Well, um, we'll see.
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: You know, the Josh McDaniels thing for you is a
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: good one in your argument, Fred, Josh McDaniels is a
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: failed head coach who came back as the coordinator and
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: was very successful again as a coordinator. Right now, of
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: course he was. But I also think he was successful
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: as a coordinator before he became a hit coach. No,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: I know, yeah, And that's where I would sort of
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: disagree with the whole Patricia and Judge thing. Right. Well,
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: they think it's a different comp you know, it's a
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: different comp for sure. Listen, like we talked about it.
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: I as far as Josh being a head coach, I
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: wish him all the best except when he plays us.
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: But I hope he does. Well. Why wouldn't I I
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: think he will. I mean, I you know, I don't
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: know if he will, but I hope he does. I
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: think he's got a great team. I'm you know, interested
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: to see how he does it his second time, taking
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: your amount of talent that he has to work, right,
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: I mean, there's talk about no excuses, and I mean
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: and and a tough division. I mean, you know, one
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: of those teams is going to finish in fourth in
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: the AFC West and be like, what happened the efforts
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: kind of analysis you only get from the efforts of
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: the world. Saw the Hall of Fame game, you know,
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: and uh, you know the Raiders put up thirteen points
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: in the first half. You know their offense is okay.
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: I'm just like, okay, you know, it looked it was
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: the Patriot's offense. It was that that was the coolest part.
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: I mean, that broadcast mentioned the Patriots more than they
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: mentioned the Raiders. It was. It was actually pretty cool.
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: Their first drive, they hit Hoss Duke like three times
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: in a row, and I'm just like, oh, so he's
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: just running the Patriots offense. And then they go on
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: the touchdown to Jacob's toss crack. I'm like, this is
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: just this is just last year's Patriots offense, just in Vegas,
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: which is fascinating. But I think the underlying thing of
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: the whole Josh McDaniels thing, losing Carmen Brisilo, the offensive
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: line coach, to the Raiders, is I think going to
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: end up being a sneaky big thing that the Patriots
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: had happened to them when McDaniels left. It's one thing
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: to lose McDaniels. We all know his value, but Carmen
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: Brisilo is at least somebody that he was molded by
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: offensive line play right, and he talked to all these
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: offensive line guys, you gotta live it. You gotta have
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: been boring in it. You don't just like adopt offensive line.
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: That's something that runs through you. And Carmen Bersilo has
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: been an offensive line coach all the way back to
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: Youngstown State and played offensive line and he really knew
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: what he was doing. And I would have loved to
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: have seen the Patriots been able to retain him, but
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: McDaniels ended up taking him with him, and I think
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: that's gonna be a sneaky big loss for them. Okay,
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: um Landon writes in I'm going to the Giants Pats
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: preseason and Boston for the first time, and must stop
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: spots and things to see around the stadium. What are they? Also,
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: will you guys be around to meet No to the answer,
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: that very very busy. But if you got to Boston,
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: I mean it's a city there's a million things the
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: Freedom Trail. Bro Yeah, get a cup, get a travel
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: guide and check it out. You know. I also tell
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: you she's you've got spots, right, you got the spot,
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: I got spots. I got restaurants. I don't know, just
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: gonna be on the North End. Yeah, got some good
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: Italian Yeah, can never go wrong. Yeah, he's gonna was
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: he asking around here? Like around here too. I mean
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: there's all restaurants here too. I get here early. Maybe
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: go to the Hall of Fame. Oh yeah, you know,
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: if you can check that out, go in the pro shop,
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: get some swag, get a red jersey for yourself. We're
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: tour guides now, that's right. Oh yeah, we we have
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: to do a lot. We have to do a lot here.
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: We often help out people from out of town. Yeah
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: that's good. It's exciting when people come here. All right.
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: Favorite restaurant in Boston if you had to go to
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: one restaurant, where would you go? I'm just gonna say
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: Carmeline is in the North End, just because that's a
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: place I've been a few times and really enjoy. I
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: don't have an extensive Aben Louise shout out shaheen, best waiter, waiter,
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: excuse me at Aban Lewis Louise, You're right. I was
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: the same thing here. I have an affinity for Aban Lewis.
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: Go ahead, Alex. She's like so many choices. I don't
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: really have one. I gotta be honest. I would say
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: anywhere in the North End, Bacco or Brico. In the
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: North End, Bacco or Brico. Those are two different places. Rico,
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: not the that's very average the Buca. Remember, yeah, Aban Louise,
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: I love it. It's a steakhouse, old old old school
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: um from well, I mean it's got that woody you
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: know oakum. From what I understand that some of the
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: Patriots players back in the day used to frequent Aban
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: Louise courting, including Number twelve. Aban Louise catered a charity
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: golf tournament. I worked with Kendrick and he was like, Yo,
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: they need to sponsor me. This. The sandwich is amazing.
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: He really is always looking for a way to either
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: build his brand or get some endorsement. They also melted
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: cheese is on top of the steak, which is fantastic,
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: really good. It's some age cheddar on there. I just
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: I had some steak tips upstairs. They were pretty good too.
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: Oh you're making me hungry foods. Not upstairs, Matt, I
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: wasn't very nice. Oh hey, all right, Well that's gonna
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: be it for this edition of Patriots Unfiltered. Two o'clock episode.
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: No show on Thursday, but we will have our first
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: pregame and postgame show on Thursday. So what's the kickoff?
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: Seven thirty? Pregame starts at four thirty. They need a
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: half hour to turn the streams over. So yeah, thirty
