Transcript
- 0:01The Bible is an incredible book filled with very specific prophecies.
- 0:06One such prophecy that Jeremiah gave to the people was that
- 0:11God warned them that if they did not turn away from their idolatry and their
- 0:15rebellion, that he would destroy the temple.
- 0:20And he even names who would be the one to destroy
- 0:24it. He names Nebuchadnezzar.
- 0:28How did this prophecy come to pass? Listen in and
- 0:32find out.
- 0:36Welcome to the One Year Audio Bible Podcast. Today is October
- 0:4015th. Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire
- 0:44Bible in one year. This week we are reading from the
- 0:49New Living Translation for the Old Testament and for the New Testament.
- 0:55Ezekiel 38:18-23.
- 1:02But this is what the Sovereign Lord says: When Gog
- 1:05invades the land of Israel, my fury will boil over.
- 1:10In my jealousy and blazing anger, I promise a mighty
- 1:15shaking in the land of Israel on that day.
- 1:18All living things— the fish in the sea, the birds of
- 1:22the sky, the animals of the field, the small animals that scurry
- 1:26along the ground, and all the people on the earth— will quake
- 1:30in terror at My presence. Mountains will be thrown down,
- 1:35cliffs will crumble, walls will fall to the earth.
- 1:39I will summon the sword against you on all the hills of Israel,
- 1:42says the Sovereign Lord. Your men will turn their swords against
- 1:47each other. I will punish you and your armies with disease
- 1:50and bloodshed. I will send torrential rain,
- 1:54hailstones, fire, and burning sulfur. In this
- 1:58way I will show my greatness and holiness,
- 2:01and I will make myself known to all the nations of the world.
- 2:05Then they will know that I am the Lord.
- 2:14Jeremiah 26:1-27, 22.
- 2:19This message came to Jeremiah from the Lord early in the reign
- 2:22of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah.
- 2:26The Lord said, stand out in front of the Temple of the Lord and make
- 2:30an announcement to the people who have come here to worship from all
- 2:33over Judah. Give them my entire message.
- 2:37Include: every word. Perhaps they will listen and
- 2:41turn from their evil ways. Then I will be able to withhold
- 2:45the disaster I am ready to pour out on them because of their sins.
- 2:50Say to them, this is what the Lord says: If you will
- 2:54not listen to Me and obey the Law I have given you, and if
- 2:58you will not listen to My servants the prophets— for I sent them again
- 3:01and again to warn you, but you would not listen to them—
- 3:05Then I will destroy this Temple as I destroyed Shiloh,
- 3:10the place where the Tabernacle was located.
- 3:13And I will make Jerusalem an object of cursing in every nation on
- 3:18earth. The priests, the prophets,
- 3:21and all the people listened to Jeremiah as he spoke in front of the
- 3:25Lord's Temple. But when Jeremiah had finished his message,
- 3:29saying everything the Lord had told him to say, the priests
- 3:33and prophets and all the people at the Temple mobbed him. Kill him!
- 3:37Shouted, What right do you have to prophesy in the Lord's name that
- 3:42this Temple will be destroyed like Shiloh? What do you mean saying that
- 3:46Jerusalem will be destroyed? And all the people threatened
- 3:50him as he stood in front of the Temple. When the
- 3:53officials of Judah heard what was happening, they rushed
- 3:57over from the palace and sat down at the New Gate of the Temple to
- 4:00hold court. The priests and prophets presented
- 4:05their accusations to the officials and the people. This man should die!
- 4:09they said. You have heard with your own ears what
- 4:13a traitor he is, for he has prophesied against this city.
- 4:18Then Jeremiah spoke in his own defense. The Lord
- 4:21sent me to prophesy against this Temple and this
- 4:25city, he said. The Lord gave me every word that I have spoken.
- 4:29But if you stop your sinning and begin to obey the Lord your God,
- 4:32He will cancel this disaster that He has announced against
- 4:37you. As for me, I am helpless and in your power.
- 4:40Do with me as you think best. But if you kill me,
- 4:44rest assured that you will be killing an innocent man. The responsibility
- 4:48for such a deed will lie on you, on this city,
- 4:52and on every person living in it. For it is absolutely
- 4:56true that the Lord sent me to speak every word you have
- 5:00heard. Then the officials and the people said
- 5:03to the priests and prophets, This man does not deserve the
- 5:07death sentence, for he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our
- 5:11God. Then some of the wise old men stood and
- 5:14spoke to the people there. They said, Think back to the days when Micah of
- 5:18Moresheth prophesied during the reign of King Hezekiah of
- 5:22Judah. He told the people of Judah, this is what the Lord Almighty
- 5:26says: Mount Zion will be plowed like an open field.
- 5:30Jerusalem will be reduced to rubble. A great
- 5:33forest will grow on the hilltop where the Temple now stands.
- 5:38But did King Hezekiah and the people kill him for saying this? No!
- 5:42They turned from their sins and worshiped the Lord.
- 5:46They begged Him to have mercy on them. Then the Lord held
- 5:49back the terrible disaster he had pronounced against them.
- 5:53If we kill Jeremiah, who knows what will happen to us?
- 5:59At this time Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-Jearim
- 6:03was also prophesying for the Lord, and he predicted the same terrible
- 6:07disaster against the city and nation as Jeremiah
- 6:11did. When King Jehoiakim and the army of officers
- 6:15and officials heard what he was saying, the king sent someone to kill him.
- 6:20But Uriah heard about the plot and escaped to Egypt.
- 6:25Then King Jehoiakim sent Elnathan son of Acbor
- 6:30to Egypt along with several other men to capture Uriah.
- 6:34They took him prisoner and brought him back to King Jehoiakim.
- 6:38The king then killed Uriah with the sword. And had him
- 6:41buried in an unmarked grave. Ahikam son
- 6:45of Shaphan also stood with Jeremiah and persuaded the court not
- 6:49to turn him over to the mob to be killed.
- 6:53This message came to Jeremiah from the Lord early in the reign of
- 6:58Zedekiah son of Josiah, king of Judah.
- 7:02The Lord said to me, Make a yoke and fasten it on your neck with
- 7:06leather thongs. Then send messages to the kings
- 7:10of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, and Sidon through
- 7:13their ambassadors to King Zedekiah in Jerusalem.
- 7:17Give them this message for their masters: This is what the Lord
- 7:21Almighty, the God of Israel, says: By my great power I have made the
- 7:26earth and all its people and every animal. I can give these things of mine
- 7:29to anyone I choose. Now I will give
- 7:34your countries to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Who is my
- 7:38servant? I have put everything, even the wild animals,
- 7:41under his control.
- 7:45All the nations will serve him and his son and his grandson
- 7:49until his time is up.
- 7:57But then many nations and great kings will conquer and
- 8:00rule over Babylon. So you must submit to Babylon's king
- 8:04and serve him. Put your neck under Babylon's yoke.
- 8:08I will punish any nation that refuses to be his slave, says the
- 8:12Lord. I will send war, famine, and disease upon that nation
- 8:16until Babylon has conquered it. Do not listen to your
- 8:21false prophets, fortune-tellers, interpreters of dreams,
- 8:24mediums, and sorcerers who say, the king of Babylon
- 8:28will not conquer you. They are all liars, and I will
- 8:31drive you from your land and send you far away
- 8:35to die. But the people of any nation that submits to the
- 8:39king of Babylon will be allowed to stay in their own country to
- 8:42farm the land as usual. I, the Lord, have spoken.
- 8:50Then I repeated this same message to King Zedekiah of Judah.
- 8:54If you want to live, submit to the king of Babylon and his people,
- 8:58I said. Why do you insist on dying, you and
- 9:02your people? Why should you choose war, famine, and disease,
- 9:06which the Lord will bring against every nation that refuses to
- 9:09submit to Babylon's king? Do not listen
- 9:13to the false prophets who keep telling you, the king of Babylon will
- 9:17not conquer you. They are liars! This is what the Lord
- 9:21says: I have not sent these prophets. They are telling you
- 9:24lies in my name, so I will drive you from this land.
- 9:28You will all die, you and all these prophets too.
- 9:34Then I spoke to the priests and the people and said, This is what the
- 9:38Lord says: Do not listen to your prophets who claim that soon
- 9:41the gold utensils taken from my Temple will
- 9:45be returned from Babylon. It is all a lie. Do not listen
- 9:49to them. Surrender to the king of Babylon and you will live.
- 9:53Why should this whole city be destroyed? If they really
- 9:57are the Lord's prophets, let them pray to the Lord Almighty
- 10:00about the gold utensils that are still left in the Lord's Temple and
- 10:04in the king's palace and in the palaces of Jerusalem.
- 10:09Let them pray that these remaining articles will not be carried away with
- 10:13you to Babylon. For this is what the Lord Almighty says about
- 10:17the bronze pillars in front of the Temple, the bronze sea in the Temple courtyard,
- 10:21the bronze water carts, and all the other ceremonial articles: King
- 10:26Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon left them here when he exiled
- 10:30Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim king of Judah to
- 10:33Babylon, along with all the other important people of Judah
- 10:37and Jerusalem. Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God
- 10:42of Israel, says about the precious things kept in the Temple: and in
- 10:45the palace of Judah's king. They will all be carried away to
- 10:49Babylon and will stay there until I send for them,
- 10:52says the Lord. But someday I will bring them back
- 10:56to Jerusalem again.
- 11:032 Thessalonians 3:1-18.
- 11:07Finally, dear brothers and sisters, I, Paul,
- 11:11ask you to pray for us, Pray first that the Lord's
- 11:14message will spread rapidly and be honored wherever it
- 11:19goes, just as when it came to you. Pray too that
- 11:22we will be saved from wicked and evil people, for not
- 11:26everyone believes in the Lord. But the Lord is faithful.
- 11:30He will make you strong and guard you from the evil one.
- 11:34And we are confident in the Lord that you are practicing the things we commanded
- 11:38you. And that you always will. May the Lord
- 11:41bring you into an ever deeper understanding of the love of God
- 11:46and the endurance that comes from Christ. And now,
- 11:49dear brothers and sisters, we give you this command with the authority of
- 11:54our Lord Jesus Christ: Stay away from any
- 11:57Christian who lives in idleness and doesn't follow the tradition
- 12:01of hard work we gave you. For you know that you ought
- 12:05to follow our example, We were never lazy when we were
- 12:09with you. We never accepted food from anyone without
- 12:12paying for it. We worked hard day and night so
- 12:16that we would not be a burden to any of you. It wasn't
- 12:20that we didn't have the right to ask you to feed us, but we wanted
- 12:24to give you an example to follow. Even while we were with you,
- 12:28we gave you this rule: whoever does not work should
- 12:32not eat. Yet we hear that some of you
- 12:36are living idle lives, refusing to work and wasting time
- 12:40meddling in other people's business. In the name
- 12:43of the Lord Jesus Christ, we appeal to such people— no,
- 12:47we command them: Settle down and get to work. Earn your
- 12:51own living. And I say to the rest of you, dear brothers and
- 12:55sisters, never get tired of doing good. Take note
- 12:59of those who refuse to obey what we say in this letter.
- 13:03Stay away from them so they will be ashamed. Don't think of them
- 13:07as enemies, but speak to them as you would to a Christian who
- 13:11needs to be warned. May the Lord of peace himself always
- 13:15give you his peace, no matter what happens.
- 13:19The Lord be with you all. Now here is my greeting,
- 13:23which I write with my own hand.
- 13:26Paul. I do this at the end of all my letters to prove that they
- 13:30really are from me. May the grace
- 13:34of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
- 13:40Psalm 85:1-13.
- 13:45Lord, you have poured out amazing blessings on your
- 13:48land. You have restored the fortunes of Israel.
- 13:52You have forgiven the guilt of Your people; yes,
- 13:55You have covered all their sins. You have withdrawn Your fury;
- 14:00You have ended Your blazing anger. Now turn to us again,
- 14:04O God of our salvation! Put aside Your anger against us.
- 14:09Will You be angry with us always? Will You prolong
- 14:13Your wrath to distant generations? Won't You revive
- 14:17us again so Your people can rejoice in You? Show us
- 14:21Your unfailing love, O Lord, and grant us Your salvation.
- 14:27I listen carefully to what God, the Lord, is saying,
- 14:30for He speaks peace to His people, His faithful ones.
- 14:34But let them not return to their foolish ways.
- 14:38Surely His salvation is near to those who honor Him.
- 14:42Our land will be filled with His glory.
- 14:45Unfailing love and truth have met together; righteousness
- 14:51and peace have kissed. Truth springs up from the earth,
- 14:55and righteousness smiles down from heaven.
- 14:58Yes, the Lord pours down His blessings; our
- 15:02land will yield its bountiful crops.
- 15:05Righteousness goes as a herald before Him, preparing the way
- 15:09for His steps.
- 15:12Proverbs 25:16. Do you
- 15:16like honey? Don't eat too much of it or it will make
- 15:19you sick. I want to speak to you today from
- 15:23our reading from Jeremiah 26 and 27, and then we're
- 15:27going to jump into 2 Thessalonians, the final chapter,
- 15:30chapter 3. And in our reading today
- 15:34in Jeremiah, we saw that Jeremiah
- 15:38is giving a strong warning to the people about
- 15:43the temple, and he's actually standing in front of the temple
- 15:46when he gives this message. He just— he warns
- 15:50them that God was going to destroy the temple as
- 15:54the same— the way that Shiloh, the place where the Tabernacle
- 15:58used to be, was located, and that God was going to make
- 16:02Jerusalem an object of cursing in every nation on earth. And he's standing in front
- 16:07of the temple. When he gives this message. So what's incredible
- 16:11and amazing is this prophecy that Jeremiah
- 16:16gave. God gave them an out. He said,
- 16:19however, if you repent,
- 16:23if you turn away from your sin, if you return to me and
- 16:27you begin to follow me once again and follow my commands and my,
- 16:31my, my law, I will relent from
- 16:35this disaster, from this catastrophe. He gives
- 16:39them a way out. And so that's
- 16:43the prophecy. The people are enraged. They want to
- 16:47kill him. But this prophecy in fact did
- 16:51come to pass, not on just any random day,
- 16:55but on the infamous 9th of Av.
- 16:59In 586 BC.
- 17:03And Jeremiah also names the
- 17:07person who would destroy the temple in
- 17:11chapter 27, starting in verse 6.
- 17:15He says, now I will give your country to the King Nebuchadnezzar
- 17:19of Babylon, who is my— that is,
- 17:23God's— servant. I have put everything, even the wild animals,
- 17:27under his control, and all the nations will serve him and
- 17:31his son and his grandson until his time is up.
- 17:35So not only does he say the temple is going to be destroyed,
- 17:38he says who is going to destroy the temple. That would be Nebuchadnezzar
- 17:43from Babylon. And in fact, that's exactly what happened,
- 17:48is on the 9th of Av in 586 BC,
- 17:51Nebuchadnezzar came and they punched through the outer wall
- 17:55and then the inner wall, and then they breached the walls and
- 17:59they set fire to the temple, and the temple was utterly destroyed.
- 18:07And so we know that the Bible is true by
- 18:11faith, but there's much evidence of prophecies that are in the Bible
- 18:16that verify and validate and confirm the truth
- 18:20of the scriptures.
- 18:26So will the temple one day be rebuilt? Yes, it will.
- 18:32Um, there's going to be a Third Temple. The First Temple
- 18:36was destroyed by King Nebuchadnezzar, then it was rebuilt after
- 18:4070 years. We talked about that yesterday. Uh, the children of Israel
- 18:45went into exile to Babylon. And in Jeremiah 25,
- 18:50God tells them, you're going to be there for 70 years, and then you will
- 18:53be allowed to return. A time of desolation will be
- 18:57over after 70 years. And so then they
- 19:01went back after 70 years. Daniel prayed in Daniel chapter
- 19:059, and Ezra and Nehemiah and
- 19:08a group of the Hebrews returned
- 19:13to Israel, to Jerusalem, to rebuild the temple
- 19:17and to rebuild the city. So the Second Temple
- 19:20was rebuilt, and then in 70 AD,
- 19:24under the emperor, the Roman emperor,
- 19:28um, the general Titus in 70 AD came
- 19:32and they destroyed that Second Temple, and not just on any random
- 19:36day. But on the infamous 9th of Av,
- 19:41the Second Temple was destroyed.
- 19:45And so now there is no temple,
- 19:49but there will be a Third Temple.
- 19:54We know this because the Antichrist is
- 19:58going to set himself up as God,
- 20:01and he will be in that temple And there will be an abomination
- 20:05that causes desolation spoken of in Daniel chapter 9,
- 20:10that anyone who refuses to bow and to pay homage
- 20:13to this abomination will
- 20:20be executed. And then there's a final 4th
- 20:24Temple, one that Jesus administers and
- 20:27occupies, and is in charge
- 20:31of. Now I want to jump into 2 Thessalonians 3,
- 20:36and in this final closing chapter, we see some
- 20:40important lessons. Paul is exhorting
- 20:43the people to live a disciplined and an orderly life.
- 20:48He's telling them to work with their hands and to work for their daily bread
- 20:53and to let the Holy Spirit direct them into the love
- 20:57of God. He prays that— would you pray
- 21:01for us that we would be— that the gospel would spread rapidly?
- 21:06And he exhorts the Thessalonians, don't associate with unruly,
- 21:11lazy gossipers. He exhorts
- 21:16them to be steadfast in Christ and that
- 21:20the word of God, the gospel, would spread rapidly from
- 21:25Thessalonica. And so
- 21:28in summary, I would give a title to this chapter:
- 21:32The Discipline of the Waiting Room. So we are waiting
- 21:37for the coming of Christ, for when he comes and captures—
- 21:40takes us up and we meet him in the air in the clouds,
- 21:44the rapture of the church. And then so
- 21:48there's a discipline of the waiting room, that while we're waiting,
- 21:52we're to be busy about the King's business.
- 21:55We're about— we're to be about the Father's business while we
- 21:59wait for the coming of His Son to catch us
- 22:03up into the clouds. We are His
- 22:06bride, and while we wait in the waiting room,
- 22:10we are to live an orderly and disciplined life. We're not just to
- 22:14say, oh well, Jesus is coming, so now I'm just going to just sit around
- 22:18and twiddle my thumbs and and wait for him to come.
- 22:22And so we are to eagerly
- 22:26anticipate and look for his return and
- 22:32make every day count and every day matter for
- 22:36King— for the kingdom of God. So Father,
- 22:39I pray that you will help us all to live a quiet,
- 22:43orderly, disciplined life. Please continually
- 22:47direct our hearts into the love of
- 22:51God, that we would experience and
- 22:54know and receive that love, and also
- 22:58pour that love out upon others in tangible,
- 23:02practical ways. In Jesus' name,
- 23:06amen. That's all I have for today.
- 23:11We'll see you tomorrow.
