- 0:00Speaker 1: The Holy Spirit in Galatians. I want to take another
- 0:05Speaker 1: Bible reading in regard to the work of the Holy Spirit.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We have now looked at it from various sides. Yesterday
- 0:13Speaker 1: morning we had the thoughts of God's work in the
- 0:15Speaker 1: Epistle to the Ephesians. This morning, I want you to
- 0:19Speaker 1: take the Epistle to the Galatians and see what is
- 0:23Speaker 1: taught there about the work of the Holy Spirit. We
- 0:27Speaker 1: are going to study that epistle not with a view
- 0:29Speaker 1: to get doctrine or theology, as it is sometimes called,
- 0:33Speaker 1: but we want to get teaching in regard to the
- 0:36Speaker 1: spiritual life and our daily walk. You know that the
- 0:41Speaker 1: Galatians had been converted under the preaching of Paul. They
- 0:45Speaker 1: had been very blessed times, and the Holy Spirit had
- 0:48Speaker 1: been among them in great power. And yet, strange to say,
- 0:52Speaker 1: they had very shortly afterwards gone back. They had been
- 0:56Speaker 1: led away by Jewish teachers and had fallen away from
- 0:59Speaker 1: the simls life of faith. Paul writes the epistle to
- 1:03Speaker 1: reprove and instruct them. From what I have said, you
- 1:07Speaker 1: will see the state of the Church was very low.
- 1:10Speaker 1: The works of the flesh were very manifest. There was
- 1:14Speaker 1: a great deal of bitterness, jealousy and clamor. Consequently, the
- 1:18Speaker 1: teaching of the epistle is one of warning. I wish
- 1:21Speaker 1: to point out specially how in connection with the mention
- 1:25Speaker 1: of the Holy Spirit there are certain dangers against which
- 1:28Speaker 1: we need to be warned. There are many people who
- 1:31Speaker 1: think that when a man is filled with the spirit,
- 1:33Speaker 1: he is in a state of perfection. They will very
- 1:37Speaker 1: soon find out that they are wrong. I want to
- 1:40Speaker 1: impress this very much upon you, that when a man
- 1:43Speaker 1: gets the fullness of the spirit, the life of the Spirit,
- 1:46Speaker 1: it is a thing that makes him very gentle, very humble,
- 1:50Speaker 1: very much afraid of sinning against God, and very tender
- 1:54Speaker 1: lest he should be led to walk astray. He has
- 1:58Speaker 1: a spirit of deep, deep humility and fear of pride.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Let us find out what God's word tells us and
- 2:07Speaker 1: warns us to beware of. Firstly, the first mention of
- 2:12Speaker 1: the spirit is Galatians three, verse two. This only would
- 2:17Speaker 1: I learn of you received ye the Spirit by the
- 2:20Speaker 1: works of the law or by the hearing of faith.
- 2:24Speaker 1: There we see plainly that there are two ways in
- 2:27Speaker 1: which men often think that they can get the Holy Spirit.
- 2:31Speaker 1: One is by the work of the law, that is
- 2:34Speaker 1: the religion of human nature. We think we must work.
- 2:38Speaker 1: We have been doing wrong. Of course, we must do right.
- 2:41Speaker 1: We have been sinning. Of course we must give up sin.
- 2:44Speaker 1: And the more we give up sin and obey God,
- 2:47Speaker 1: the more we get of the Holy Spirit. The epistle
- 2:51Speaker 1: teaches us that this is wrong. Was it by the
- 2:55Speaker 1: works of the law or by the hearing of faith?
- 2:58Speaker 1: Did you find yourselves getting so good, so righteous that
- 3:01Speaker 1: you could say, now, Lord, give us the Holy Spirit.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Did the Holy Spirit come upon you in response to
- 3:08Speaker 1: such a life under the law, or when you were
- 3:11Speaker 1: under the law, Did it not show you that you
- 3:13Speaker 1: were sinners? And did you not come in faith by
- 3:16Speaker 1: the obedience of faith, first accepting Jesus Christ, and then
- 3:21Speaker 1: giving yourself up to obey him fully by the hearing
- 3:24Speaker 1: of faith, you got the Holy Spirit. Take care, those
- 3:28Speaker 1: of you who are seeking for the Holy Ghost, that
- 3:31Speaker 1: you don't seek by the works of the law instead
- 3:33Speaker 1: of the hearing of faith. It is a free gift
- 3:37Speaker 1: of the everlasting God. It is not what you do
- 3:41Speaker 1: or what you are that will get the Holy Spirit.
- 3:44Speaker 1: As a condition, you have to confess sin and to
- 3:47Speaker 1: give up sin. But the more earnest and intense your desire.
- 3:51Speaker 1: The more you fail, until you see that you cannot
- 3:54Speaker 1: conquer sin yourself. It is as you come to Jesus
- 3:58Speaker 1: and confess that you were not strong enough to cast
- 4:01Speaker 1: out sin, and say, Lord, in thy power, I will
- 4:05Speaker 1: live a holy life. That you will obtain the Holy Spirit.
- 4:08Speaker 1: You receive the Spirit by faith, as we read in
- 4:12Speaker 1: the fourteenth verse of the same chapter, that we might
- 4:16Speaker 1: receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Now remember,
- 4:20Speaker 1: every one who is beginning to long for the filling
- 4:23Speaker 1: of the Holy Spirit, that here is the great truth
- 4:26Speaker 1: you need. You must get it by faith. Faith always
- 4:31Speaker 1: means this, there is something I cannot do myself, I
- 4:35Speaker 1: trust another to do it for me. Faith is always
- 4:39Speaker 1: a confession of helplessness. Faith, if it means anything, means this, Lord,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I cannot make myself worthy, but I can trust in
- 4:48Speaker 1: Thy love. Thou canst and will give me the Holy Spirit.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I want you to say that without any doubt. And
- 4:57Speaker 1: it is not only by faith once for all, but
- 5:00Speaker 1: it is by faith every morning that the action of
- 5:03Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit may be received fresh from heaven. Many
- 5:07Speaker 1: people have a precious experience and live on that for
- 5:10Speaker 1: forty years. We need the Holy Spirit fresh from heaven
- 5:15Speaker 1: every day. I don't know of a more solemn lesson
- 5:18Speaker 1: than that of the manner that came from heaven. It
- 5:21Speaker 1: became corrupt twenty four hours after it fell. Water you
- 5:26Speaker 1: want every day fresh from the spring. Stagnant water corrupts.
- 5:31Speaker 1: If you want to live the life of the Holy Spirit,
- 5:34Speaker 1: it must be a life continually renewed from Heaven. I
- 5:38Speaker 1: must come every day to be filled fresh with the
- 5:41Speaker 1: Holy Spirit. This must be the holy habit of my life.
- 5:46Speaker 1: As you began so continue by faith. You must learn
- 5:50Speaker 1: to get hold of God's promises, to believe in the
- 5:53Speaker 1: divine God given power working in you, and then your
- 5:56Speaker 1: walk will be a humble one from hour to hour.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Just as a father gives bread every day to his child,
- 6:03Speaker 1: so my Father gives me the blessed power of the
- 6:06Speaker 1: Holy Spirit fresh every day. The great mark of a
- 6:10Speaker 1: man who lives in the Spirit is deep, true, entire,
- 6:15Speaker 1: unbroken dependence upon God. As I need the sunshine every
- 6:20Speaker 1: minute of the day, the sunshine of five minutes ago
- 6:23Speaker 1: does not help me. Now every minute the sun must
- 6:27Speaker 1: shine on me from above. So every moment the Holy
- 6:30Speaker 1: Spirit must come to my heart afresh from God. And
- 6:35Speaker 1: thus you receive not by the works of the law,
- 6:38Speaker 1: but by the hearing of faith. Secondly, warning in the
- 6:44Speaker 1: fourth verse, are ye so foolish? Having begun in the spirit,
- 6:49Speaker 1: are ye now made perfect in the flesh. This is
- 6:52Speaker 1: a most important and instructive lesson, conveying the solemn warning
- 6:57Speaker 1: that a man can begin in the spirit and then
- 7:00Speaker 1: get off the line and go on to perfect in
- 7:02Speaker 1: the flesh what was begun in the spirit. You know
- 7:06Speaker 1: what shunting is. On a dark night, a train may
- 7:10Speaker 1: be switched over to another track and go off in
- 7:13Speaker 1: a wrong direction. A man may receive the Holy Spirit
- 7:17Speaker 1: and get shunted off the track just by one thing,
- 7:20Speaker 1: the flesh. In Romans eighth chapter we saw the great
- 7:24Speaker 1: contrast between the spirit and the flesh. Not in the flesh,
- 7:29Speaker 1: but in the spirit. Not after the flesh, but after
- 7:32Speaker 1: the spirit. So too in Galatians the contrast is pressed.
- 7:37Speaker 1: A man can begin with the Holy Spirit and unconsciously
- 7:41Speaker 1: be led to perfect to seek his religious progress in
- 7:44Speaker 1: the flesh. Thousands have done it. A man has for
- 7:48Speaker 1: a time been under the power of the Spirit and
- 7:51Speaker 1: yet been led to seek the maintenance of his life
- 7:53Speaker 1: and work in what is human and carnal. You may
- 7:58Speaker 1: have the Holy Spirit in you, and yet you have
- 8:00Speaker 1: the flesh in you too, And the flesh is always
- 8:03Speaker 1: active and ready to live the religious life. I have
- 8:07Speaker 1: seen men in whom the power of the Holy Ghost
- 8:10Speaker 1: is manifest, and yet there is just a little of self.
- 8:14Speaker 1: God uses such a man, and yet self confidence may
- 8:17Speaker 1: corrupt all the man perfects in the flesh what was
- 8:21Speaker 1: begun in the spirit. This is a danger to which
- 8:25Speaker 1: you and I are exposed, and therefore we must take
- 8:28Speaker 1: the warning. How can we provide against it? You cannot
- 8:32Speaker 1: provide against it. Nothing on earth can bring us relief. Oh,
- 8:37Speaker 1: that we might have a real sense of our danger,
- 8:40Speaker 1: a sense of our utter inability to keep away the secret,
- 8:43Speaker 1: insidious power of the flesh. You need to poor impotence
- 8:48Speaker 1: in the very depths of your being, so that you
- 8:51Speaker 1: through God Praise God, that your heart is full of
- 8:54Speaker 1: the joy of the Holy Ghost. You still are conscious
- 8:58Speaker 1: that all the time you are in the enemy territory
- 9:01Speaker 1: and may be led to allow the flesh to assert
- 9:03Speaker 1: itself in your religion. You want to be brought to
- 9:07Speaker 1: such a sense of your helplessness and dependence upon God
- 9:11Speaker 1: as shall lead you really to yield yourself to the
- 9:14Speaker 1: Holy Spirit alone. Dear Christians, you have a great many enemies,
- 9:19Speaker 1: but watch specially against one that one how hard to
- 9:24Speaker 1: be overthrown. It is self self is the flesh, and
- 9:29Speaker 1: the flesh is self. This is the one enemy you
- 9:33Speaker 1: are in danger of allowing to come in between you
- 9:35Speaker 1: and the Holy Spirit and leading you off, hunting you
- 9:39Speaker 1: off on the wrong track. Beware to those who are
- 9:43Speaker 1: seeking earnestly to live lives filled with the Holy Spirit,
- 9:46Speaker 1: let me say, take up a position of deep fear
- 9:49Speaker 1: and dependence. God's word says, fear not, look to God,
- 9:55Speaker 1: be not afraid. But on the other hand, it says,
- 9:59Speaker 1: blessed is the man who feareth. The man who fears
- 10:03Speaker 1: lest he should sin against God and give way to
- 10:05Speaker 1: the flesh. Is the man who gets to fear nothing,
- 10:08Speaker 1: because God is his strength. Having begun in the spirit,
- 10:13Speaker 1: take care lest you perfect in the flesh. Thirdly, in
- 10:18Speaker 1: the fourth chapter, sixth and seventh verses, And because he
- 10:23Speaker 1: are sons, God hath sent forth the spirit of his
- 10:26Speaker 1: Son into your hearts, crying abba Father. Wherefore thou art
- 10:31Speaker 1: no more a servant but a son, and if a son,
- 10:35Speaker 1: than an heir of God through Christ. In the previous
- 10:39Speaker 1: verse there was a warning against the spirit of bondage.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Here we are taught that the spirit that comes in
- 10:45Speaker 1: us is the spirit of adoption. We are heirs of
- 10:49Speaker 1: God in his son. The whole teaching of the epistle
- 10:53Speaker 1: is this, not to go to God as servants, but
- 10:56Speaker 1: as sons. You have the spirit of sonship. You all
- 11:01Speaker 1: know of the parable of the prodigal son and the
- 11:03Speaker 1: elder son. How the elder son said to the father,
- 11:07Speaker 1: I have served thee these many years, yet thou never
- 11:10Speaker 1: gavest me a kid. The father replied, son, thou art
- 11:15Speaker 1: ever with me, and all I have is thine. Thou
- 11:18Speaker 1: hast free access to my presence and all my possessions.
- 11:23Speaker 1: What was wrong with that young man? He had the
- 11:26Speaker 1: spirit of a servant and not of a son. Instead
- 11:30Speaker 1: of trusting his father, he was living the life of
- 11:32Speaker 1: a slave. The spirit of bondage is so natural to us.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Therefore God's word says, do remember you are sons. Let
- 11:43Speaker 1: us show it in our whole lives, in our intercourse
- 11:46Speaker 1: with God and our walk before men, that the spirit
- 11:50Speaker 1: of a son is in us, the spirit of God's
- 11:52Speaker 1: own son. God holds back no good thing from His sons.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Our whole life ought to be in the thing. I
- 12:00Speaker 1: am always a son of God. I have always everything
- 12:04Speaker 1: I need. Most Christians do not enjoy that because they
- 12:08Speaker 1: do not live in the spirit of sonship. The object
- 12:12Speaker 1: of the Holy Spirit is to give you a full
- 12:15Speaker 1: childlike heart toward God. Here in Galatians we are warned
- 12:19Speaker 1: to take care that we don't live before God as
- 12:22Speaker 1: servants in the spirit of bondage. God gave us the
- 12:25Speaker 1: spirit of his son. He sent him forth into our hearts. Oh,
- 12:30Speaker 1: that we might realize the simplicity of being a child
- 12:33Speaker 1: of God all the day long. My Father loves me.
- 12:37Speaker 1: So see the little child's actions toward his father. He
- 12:41Speaker 1: loves him and jumps on his knee and says, won't
- 12:44Speaker 1: you give me this? The heart of the child is
- 12:47Speaker 1: full of confidence in the Father. How blessed if we
- 12:51Speaker 1: allowed this spirit of sonship to possess us. Some people
- 12:55Speaker 1: ask for the Holy Spirit and have somewhat of his power,
- 12:59Speaker 1: but their work is a burden. Allow the spirit of
- 13:02Speaker 1: God's Son, who dwells in your heart from day to day,
- 13:06Speaker 1: to deliver you from the spirit of bondage and fear.
- 13:09Speaker 1: That wrong fear of a slave toward God, and give
- 13:13Speaker 1: you a spirit of childlike access and openness, and confidence
- 13:17Speaker 1: and love. God has sent forth the spirit of his
- 13:20Speaker 1: Son into your hearts. Do not live like servants, but
- 13:25Speaker 1: like sons. Fourthly, Chapter five, verses one to five. You
- 13:32Speaker 1: see here that there were many of the Galatians who
- 13:34Speaker 1: had been justified by faith in Christ, who had taken
- 13:37Speaker 1: to works again. They were seeking for obedience in an
- 13:41Speaker 1: external religion, a religion of works. Beware of that. A
- 13:46Speaker 1: true believer waits through the Spirit for the hope of righteousness.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Through faith everything that is promised to the righteous. I
- 13:54Speaker 1: am to hope for everything. I hope for the Holy
- 13:58Speaker 1: Spirit teaches me to expect by faith. Do you not
- 14:02Speaker 1: see our whole life is to be believing. Some people ask,
- 14:07Speaker 1: have you not told us to work very hard? Yes?
- 14:10Speaker 1: But it is a very different thing to work under
- 14:13Speaker 1: the law and to work by grace. There is a
- 14:16Speaker 1: law that you may not steal. How many thousands cannot
- 14:20Speaker 1: keep from stealing. The law cannot put into their hearts
- 14:24Speaker 1: that which shall prevent them from stealing. The law is helpless.
- 14:29Speaker 1: It can punish, but it cannot affect a man's heart,
- 14:32Speaker 1: but faith can. There is no power in the world
- 14:36Speaker 1: like faith. Thousands have been attracted to South Africa by
- 14:41Speaker 1: the faith of what they heard about gold to be
- 14:43Speaker 1: found there. Faith is the one power that made them
- 14:47Speaker 1: leave home. Faith is the one power of the Christian life.
- 14:52Speaker 1: We are always in danger of seeking something by the
- 14:54Speaker 1: works of the law. We are always in danger of
- 14:57Speaker 1: thinking we ought to be doing something, instead of going
- 15:00Speaker 1: to Christ in faith and saying I can do nothing.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Work Thou in me. That is what Paul says. I
- 15:09Speaker 1: am nothing behind the chiefest of the apostles. Though I
- 15:12Speaker 1: am nothing, we through the Spirit wait for the hope
- 15:16Speaker 1: of righteousness for all the thousands of blessings that are
- 15:19Speaker 1: to come to us every day of our lives. Paul
- 15:22Speaker 1: teaches it in every possible way that we must live
- 15:25Speaker 1: and work in the spirit coming from God and filling
- 15:28Speaker 1: our life. Let there every day of your lives, every
- 15:32Speaker 1: morning especially, be a time set apart for acting faith,
- 15:37Speaker 1: for exercising yourself in believing before you pray. There are
- 15:41Speaker 1: Christians who study their Bibles so earnestly. For half an
- 15:44Speaker 1: hour they have read and thought on God's word, have
- 15:47Speaker 1: prayed and told God what they want but they have
- 15:50Speaker 1: done no believing. They have never asked, do I know
- 15:54Speaker 1: certainly that God is blessing? Do I believe for certain
- 15:58Speaker 1: that God is going to keep me? Am I perfectly
- 16:01Speaker 1: sure God is going to guide me? If you ask them,
- 16:04Speaker 1: if they believed that, they would hesitate to answer. Take
- 16:08Speaker 1: warning and learn to say every time you go to pray,
- 16:12Speaker 1: I am not going to pray unless I believe God
- 16:15Speaker 1: is listening. Am I sure that God hears me? And
- 16:20Speaker 1: can I trust him fully that He is going to
- 16:22Speaker 1: bless me? Hold still a little and say, O, God,
- 16:27Speaker 1: thou wilt bless thy child. If you do not feel
- 16:31Speaker 1: that you can say that, all the more reason you
- 16:33Speaker 1: should say what is wrong? Let your heart go up
- 16:37Speaker 1: in confession and tell God you are willing to give
- 16:40Speaker 1: up everything. You will learn to see the teaching about
- 16:43Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit and to believe in the reality of
- 16:46Speaker 1: the work in you. The Holy Spirit is not merely
- 16:49Speaker 1: for speaking or preaching, but for every hour of the day,
- 16:54Speaker 1: whether I eat or drink, I need to have the
- 16:56Speaker 1: Holy Spirit. I need to have the Holy Spirit to
- 17:00Speaker 1: rule my disposition and keep me gentle, heavenly christ like,
- 17:04Speaker 1: devoted to God. You can never influence the Church of
- 17:08Speaker 1: Christ with your prayer. Unless the Holy Spirit is leading you,
- 17:13Speaker 1: you cannot be living a holy life and a blessed
- 17:15Speaker 1: life except in the full power of the Holy Ghost.
- 17:20Speaker 1: What did God give the Holy Spirit for that we
- 17:23Speaker 1: might live like Jesus? That our life like his might
- 17:27Speaker 1: be the exhibition of what the power of God's Spirit
- 17:30Speaker 1: can work. If we would but live the life of faith,
- 17:34Speaker 1: how wonderfully God would meet and bless us. Fifth and
- 17:40Speaker 1: next warning is found in the twenty fifth verse of
- 17:43Speaker 1: the fifth chapter. If we live in the spirit, let
- 17:46Speaker 1: us walk in the spirit. Let me press upon you
- 17:50Speaker 1: the great difference between the two things. Paul says. You
- 17:54Speaker 1: may have received the Holy Spirit when you believed, but
- 17:57Speaker 1: that is not enough. You must also so walk in
- 18:00Speaker 1: the spirit. It is possible for a man to separate
- 18:04Speaker 1: the two things one from the other. Men may be
- 18:07Speaker 1: very anxious to get pardoned and become God's children, and
- 18:11Speaker 1: yet think that after that they must be content to
- 18:14Speaker 1: walk in the flesh. Look at pride, temper worldliness, jealousy,
- 18:19Speaker 1: coldness toward Christ, so little personal love. These are all
- 18:25Speaker 1: the works of the flesh and may be found in
- 18:27Speaker 1: a man living in the spirit. And yet not walking
- 18:30Speaker 1: in the spirit. Now, Paul comes to us and says
- 18:34Speaker 1: that if we live in the spirit, we must also
- 18:36Speaker 1: walk in the spirit. What does that mean? Walk includes
- 18:42Speaker 1: all our intercourse in daily life, our contact with people,
- 18:46Speaker 1: our conversation with the world. All this must be in
- 18:49Speaker 1: fellowship with the Spirit of God. Paul meant this spirit
- 18:53Speaker 1: to be in my home life, my church life, money making,
- 18:57Speaker 1: money giving, money spending part of my life. Paul says
- 19:03Speaker 1: that if you live in the spirit, you should walk
- 19:05Speaker 1: in the spirit. Every step must be in the spirit.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Am I preaching an impossible thing? Verily? No? The message
- 19:15Speaker 1: is the very mind of God and God's word. What
- 19:19Speaker 1: did he send the Holy Spirit for? If it was
- 19:21Speaker 1: not to enable his children to live a holy and
- 19:24Speaker 1: a heavenly life, it was to sanctify us, to bring
- 19:28Speaker 1: Christ into our lives, and to make us one with Christ.
- 19:33Speaker 1: In this chapter it is stated the fruit of the
- 19:35Speaker 1: Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.
- 19:45Speaker 1: How am I to live that? Paul did not mean
- 19:48Speaker 1: that for people who are better than we are, No,
- 19:51Speaker 1: it is for each of us. And how can I
- 19:54Speaker 1: live thus? By being twice as gentle or loving as
- 19:58Speaker 1: I am. No. The fruit of the Spirit is love
- 20:02Speaker 1: and gentleness every moment of the day. But how am
- 20:06Speaker 1: I to be kept every hour of the day and
- 20:08Speaker 1: walk thus in love? By having the filling of the
- 20:11Speaker 1: Spirit of God? Are you going to take in this truth?
- 20:16Speaker 1: I cannot live an hour of the day rightly except
- 20:19Speaker 1: as I am filled with the Spirit of God. Let
- 20:23Speaker 1: us just give up ourselves to walk in the spirit,
- 20:26Speaker 1: and the power of the Holy Ghost will become stronger,
- 20:29Speaker 1: and we will find there is grace to enable a
- 20:31Speaker 1: man to live and walk in the spirit. This is
- 20:35Speaker 1: a question of the deepest importance. Walk in the spirit,
- 20:39Speaker 1: and ye shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.
- 20:43Speaker 1: There is the answer to the question, how can I
- 20:45Speaker 1: conquer all these temptations of the flesh? Walk in the spirit,
- 20:50Speaker 1: Give up to the Holy Spirit to rule your life,
- 20:53Speaker 1: and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.
- 20:57Speaker 1: You will not get out of the flesh, but you
- 20:59Speaker 1: will will have power to conquer the flesh. The Holy
- 21:03Speaker 1: Spirit will be the energizing and dominating power in your life.
- 21:07Speaker 1: That can be because God has promised it. If we
- 21:11Speaker 1: yield ourselves entirely with childlike faith, God will lead us
- 21:15Speaker 1: into that life. Six last chapter. Be not deceived. God
- 21:23Speaker 1: is not mocked. For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall
- 21:26Speaker 1: he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh
- 21:29Speaker 1: shall of the flesh reap corruption. But he that soweth
- 21:33Speaker 1: to the Spirit shall of the spirit reap life everlasting.
- 21:38Speaker 1: The Galatians had gone back to the life of the flesh.
- 21:41Speaker 1: They worshiped God very earnestly, but they were self righteous.
- 21:46Speaker 1: They thought to do a great deal to please God.
- 21:49Speaker 1: But all sorts of bitter genosies and envyings broke out
- 21:52Speaker 1: among them. Paul said, they were in danger of devouring
- 21:56Speaker 1: one another. When I do not wait for the Spirit
- 21:59Speaker 1: of God God to teach me and work in me,
- 22:02Speaker 1: then I cannot work in any other power than that
- 22:04Speaker 1: of the flesh, and it brings me no real peace
- 22:07Speaker 1: and happiness. Religious flesh, with its self effort, is still
- 22:12Speaker 1: sinful flesh. The man who is trying to conquer sin
- 22:16Speaker 1: and serve God without the filling of the Holy Spirit
- 22:19Speaker 1: finds sin stronger in him every day because he is
- 22:22Speaker 1: trying to serve God in the power of the flesh.
- 22:26Speaker 1: It is self, self effort and self confidence and always
- 22:30Speaker 1: breaks out into sin. There is no getting over this.
- 22:34Speaker 1: We must not sow in the flesh. We must sow
- 22:37Speaker 1: in the spirit. If we would reap the fruit of
- 22:39Speaker 1: the Spirit. Our whole life is sowing. Every word we
- 22:44Speaker 1: speak is sowing. Every action is a seed, Every sentiment
- 22:48Speaker 1: and disposition is a seed. Let us sow in the spirit.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Let our whole life be a yielding to the Holy Spirit.
- 22:56Speaker 1: To perfect his life. We shall reap in the Spirit
- 23:00Speaker 1: a great harvest of peace and power, of joy and blessing. Now,
- 23:07Speaker 1: dear friends, there you have the warnings of the Epistle
- 23:10Speaker 1: to the Galatians in regard to the Holy life. I
- 23:14Speaker 1: close by laying upon you the necessity of taking this
- 23:17Speaker 1: truth to God in prayer alone. My brother, the Father
- 23:22Speaker 1: in Heaven is waiting as he looked upon the elder son.
- 23:26Speaker 1: He looks upon us and says, thou art ever with me,
- 23:30Speaker 1: and all I have is thine. Why not come and
- 23:34Speaker 1: claim what is ours. Let us go to the Father
- 23:38Speaker 1: and implore him to teach us the right life, the
- 23:41Speaker 1: life of the Holy Spirit. Let us learn the lesson
- 23:45Speaker 1: day by day, to be still and to yield ourselves,
- 23:49Speaker 1: to pray in the spirit, to walk and work in
- 23:52Speaker 1: the spirit. Let us yield ourselves in faith to God
- 23:56Speaker 1: the Holy Trinity. The Father through the Son, loves the
- 24:00Speaker 1: Holy Spirit to be the life of our soul. God
- 24:03Speaker 1: maketh your and my blessed experience every day. Amen.
