- 0:32[SPEAKER_01]: You see I was preaching a series a short series just a few messages from Psalm 1 At my home church not that long ago and I was listening back to it and a friend of mine I'd say you know that was a blessing to me and I was listening back I said you know what I think this might be a blessing to folks on the reading you as well
- 0:50[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's what I'm going to share with you today.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: Now, when I preach what you're going to hear just a moment is part of the second installment from Psalm 1, that short series of messages, and my voice was just a little froggy.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to sound just a little bit different than I do right now.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_01]: But we're going to continue this series.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's from a Wednesday evening service at my home church or midweek service.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: And the thought today is this, train your cravings.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, your cravings, my cravings need to be whipped into shape every once in a while.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: And my prayer today is that you will do that.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: And so as you listen to this radio broadcast, I realize it's just audio only.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to ask you to open your ears.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to ask you to soften your heart.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_01]: Let's pray that God will sharpen all of our minds that everything that said for these next few brief moments will be a help.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: will be something that causes us to ponder, do we need to train our cravings, listen to this installment from this series in the book of Psalms that I spoke on not that long ago at my home church.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: I pray it's a blessing to you now.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: Blessed is the man that walketh not in the council of
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: or stand it in the way of sinners, nor siteth, in the seat of the scornful.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law, death he meditate day and night.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that bring forth his fruit in his season.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: His leaf also shall not wither in whatsoever he do with shall prosper.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: The end God, they are not so.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: But I like the chaff which the wind driveeth away.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_01]: Therefore, the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_01]: For the Lord, knoweth the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: On Sunday night, we spoke about the fact that a happy man, a blessed man, a prosperous man, a filled man, a joyous man, learns to say, no, blessed is the man that walk if not, stand if not, sit if not, there will be things you have to say, no, too.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: Today's we look at verse number two, the happy man, the joyous man.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: learns to train his cravings.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk about that for just a few moments.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: That's great.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: Father, we thank you for this evening.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much for these dear folks.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for their faithfulness.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: What a joy it is.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: Any service to see God's house full, but especially tonight.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I know in the absence of King's kids, I'm thankful for these young people and being so little behaved and being here in church.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I would have blessing as a C.A.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: multi-generational ministry.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: And thank you for a pastor who has served through generations.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: But God, as we open your book, and we look at this man that delights himself in the law of the Lord.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: May we be careful to be able to identify ourselves with that man ourselves.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for who you are, what you've done, but God we ask in faith, praying faith, thanking you for what you will do in your sons and pray.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: Amen.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: Verse number two, but his delight is in the law of the Lord.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: I do want you to notice, don't tie these two thoughts together.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: This is the same man we were talking about in verse one.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: Blessed is the man, but his delight.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't change characters, we didn't change people.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_01]: This is the same guy.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: And they tie together when you say no to something you're saying yes to something else.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's true for anything in life.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_01]: If you say yes to your wife, we'll get this in just a moment.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: You say yes to your wife, you're saying no to all four billion other females on the planet.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: And here we see a man that can say no, but it also knows what to say yes to.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: The same blessed, happy joyous will fill content in prosperous, blessed man.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: He delights, verse number two, but his delight is in the law of the Lord.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: See, delight is different than a duty.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: Delight speaks about desire.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_01]: And understand, there are some things that we have to disobey at this in a moment that we have to discipline ourselves to do as a duty.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: But it doesn't take that much effort to get kids to eat candy, doesn't.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: They delight in it.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: They want that thing.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: If you could tell them, push your plate to the middle and grab some dessert, they'll jump on that.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: They delight in that.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: There's no duty in that.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: And this blessed man, he delights in the law of the Lord.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: He's not blessed just because of what he knows.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: He's blessed because of what he loves.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: And as we talk about cravings, that wanna point out that just as physical cravings can change can shift with healthy eating, so spiritual appetite's change when we're consistently fed with truth.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: Over time, the processed junk of the world, the worldly media, the carnal entertainment, it should, to the Christian, it should taste artificial.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: You ever ate something and you know it has that little bit of an aftertaste.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_01]: You know it's not the quite the real thing.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a big fan of full fat, full sugar all the way through.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: I want, I want all of it.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_01]: Don't give me any of this half-way stuff.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: El, I don't know, someone should tell the guy that thought of L-I-T-E.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: He's spelling the word wrong, okay?
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: That's not how it's supposed to be.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: Give me all of it, right?
- 7:00[SPEAKER_01]: But you know what it's like when you taste something, and it's not quite the real thing.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's like trying to make a cauliflower crust prick pizza, okay?
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: God never intended for cauliflower to be in pizza, all right?
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: But you know, it doesn't taste the exact same way.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't feel the same way.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: The texture's not right.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: But when we're talking about our relationship with God's word,
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: The things of the earth should not satisfy the same way God's Word does.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: They should feel empty to us.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: The sweetness of the Word, not the world, becomes more and more real.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: This is delight, not a duty.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: Psalm 119, 103, of course, would be hard to talk about God's Word without referencing Psalm 119.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: The Bible says, how sweet, 103, how sweet are that words unto my taste?
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, sweeter than honey, to that, to my mouth.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_01]: In this passage, here in the book of Psalms, is not about necessarily the man and God trying to control how you spend your time.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: God is more interested in developing messengers than he is developing messengers.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: My point is this, he's looking for a relationship with you not robotic obedience.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: God could have said, but his duty is to the law of award.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: God could have said his discipline, the thing he's supposed to do every single day.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_01]: And God speaks to that other places about how it's wise to seek him early.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: But God says here at the very gate of songs, his delight is in the law of the Lord.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_01]: And in his law, the demeditate day and night, I think of him.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think of weddings and our wedding, my wife and I always in the old auditorium and I was 12 years ago, we found out, come June 1st.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_01]: We know that now, and it helps us that Matt and Heather was just a week or so, two weeks, three weeks, whatever, it is before ours, and so we had to get some help figuring out how far-flop far it would go was.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: But coming up here very soon, the June 7th is that correct, Ms. Laura.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's a stand, I think, of this building, is that correct?
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: Am I, am I mistaken?
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, you will, if we're speaking out of verse one, you are going to walk not, sit not, stand not, with the other four billion men that would be possible suitors for the hand of Laura Colvin.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: Who gives this, it's like, you come in here to take the hand of Ben Gleeson, that's what you're doing.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: But while you're saying no to everybody else,
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: It shouldn't be, when he says you may now kiss the bride, I should hope it's not a druggery to have to do that at that point.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I'm not talking to you in here, they've been married for 12 years or beyond that, okay, but now I'm joking, I'm joking.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: But if a strange man would have come to Laura and put their arm around you, you immediately rightly so, ladies, right?
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: Someone you, a man, you don't know.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: He's not familiar with you like that.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: And you get away from me.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not gonna walk with you.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not gonna stand with you.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not gonna sit with you.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: We can understand that.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: But in the same way that we should be able to say, know to everyone else, the one whom God has niche your heart for you, Benglies.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: I have no overwhelming delight or desire in kissing Benglies and praise God for that.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_01]: That is not on my bucket list.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_01]: I'll make it through life without that.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: But when you find it odd, if Laura pulled away from him, come June 7th afternoon, that's really early in the marriage to be meeting counseling because, right?
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: So why is it that we so often stiff arm gods weren't in keeping away from us?
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: Why is it not a delight to us, but a drudgery?
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: was there ever any delight in it now as we come back in the studio here for just a moment I've got to ask do you put God at arms length I think while I was speaking there and my home church I a reference to young lady it was about to get married
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: I asked her, her name was Laura.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: I said, you're not going to win.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_01]: He leans in for that first kiss.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: And they said, you and now kiss the bride, her husband, and now husband's name has been.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: I said, you're not going to push him away.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: Are you?
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: Of course not.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: But I wonder, do we push God away?
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: We love him because he first loved us, right?
- 11:55[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we know he loves us.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_01]: but do we reciprocate?
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: Do we love him as we should?
- 12:03[SPEAKER_01]: Or do we have too much junk, too much refuse, too much rubbish?
- 12:10[SPEAKER_01]: It causes us to cling to those sorted and sorry cravings.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_01]: I hope that's not the case today.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_01]: Tomorrow on the broadcast, we're in a continuum.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_01]: I told you earlier in this week,
- 12:24[SPEAKER_01]: This particular series, very rare for me, it's gonna go two weeks, actually.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: Here in the book of Psalms and Psalm 1, tomorrow we're gonna talk about this book.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: The Bible is not a meal replacement shift.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: Now what am I talking about?
- 12:43[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna tune back in from tomorrow.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much for listening today.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_01]: My prayer is always, is that you have a great day for his glory.
