- 3:06Speaker 6: Hello there, all you dead heightes. Welcome back to a
- 3:09Speaker 6: brand new episode of Beyond the Blood staff picks. This
- 3:12Speaker 6: is the show where we leave the commentaries behind just
- 3:14Speaker 6: have a good old fashioned conversation about the movies that
- 3:17Speaker 6: we love today, returning the pages of the Book of
- 3:20Speaker 6: the Dead for Fidey Alvarez is Evil Dead from twenty thirteen.
- 3:24Speaker 6: We're also going to be diving into a bit of
- 3:26Speaker 6: evil dead burn and kind of give some rankings and
- 3:28Speaker 6: talk about that a little bit, because there's a lot
- 3:30Speaker 6: of controversy out about that one, and I'm very, very
- 3:33Speaker 6: excited to get into that. But you know, I just
- 3:36Speaker 6: pulled up to my family's dilapidated cabin, which I tried
- 3:39Speaker 6: to tell them, I don't even know why you kept
- 3:41Speaker 6: this hunk of shit out here, and I was shocked
- 3:45Speaker 6: to see that the door is broken off the hinges.
- 3:47Speaker 6: There's this horrific smell protruding from the doorway. And wait
- 3:53Speaker 6: a second, there's somebody in here. I think that's I
- 3:57Speaker 6: think that's my co host, Steve of After Hour.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Video what's happening? Man?
- 4:02Speaker 6: You got here very quick.
- 4:03Speaker 5: Man. Some say I've always been here.
- 4:08Speaker 6: Did you did you hear the toilet flush just next?
- 4:12Speaker 5: I did?
- 4:13Speaker 7: Actually, Yeah, somebody's coming out of the bathroom.
- 4:16Speaker 6: Oh it's Brian.
- 4:18Speaker 5: Put the fan on.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Man, it's that Taco Bell Man.
- 4:22Speaker 5: Oh god, dude, that's sentis sir.
- 4:26Speaker 6: Welcome back, Welcome back to the podcast, man.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Thank you for having me. Man, it's been a while.
- 4:30Speaker 3: It's been a while.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:32Speaker 6: I think the last one you were on was Double's
- 4:34Speaker 6: Rejects with.
- 4:35Speaker 3: The Devil's Reject a half of a Thouban corporate.
- 4:38Speaker 6: We did them in order so that we did them.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, yeah, Devile's Reject. Yeah.
- 4:42Speaker 6: Yeah, the show has changed.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah, witching it up from Rob Zombie the Fetti Albarez.
- 4:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Well, before we get into Evil did twenty thirteen. All
- 4:54Speaker 6: three of us have seen Evil dead Burn and this
- 4:58Speaker 6: is the newest and and this franchise is directed by
- 5:03Speaker 6: I'm gonna butcher.
- 5:03Speaker 7: The name Sebastian Vanicek, I think is.
- 5:06Speaker 6: How you say his name. He was the director of
- 5:08Speaker 6: Infested a couple years ago. This was like the Spider,
- 5:13Speaker 6: kind of like Invasion, Trapped in a tower and it's
- 5:15Speaker 6: like Evil Dead Rise, but with spiders.
- 5:17Speaker 7: Actually, now I.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Haven't seen that one. Did you y'all see that?
- 5:21Speaker 5: No? See it?
- 5:23Speaker 6: I really liked it until spoiler alert, Like the the
- 5:27Speaker 6: ending the whole movie, the spiders are like relatively real size,
- 5:33Speaker 6: like you know, it takes a little bit of liberty
- 5:34Speaker 6: and they get a little big, but not so much
- 5:36Speaker 6: that it takes you out of it. The end of
- 5:38Speaker 6: the movie, they're huge and it just completely took me
- 5:41Speaker 6: out of it, turned into eight legged freaks.
- 5:44Speaker 3: So it's similar to Evil Dead Burns with the ending
- 5:46Speaker 3: of that.
- 5:47Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, he's got a problem with the endings. Yeah,
- 5:50Speaker 6: him and Ryan Coogler have this problem with thinks.
- 5:52Speaker 3: You've got for somebody saying that, Yeah, it's like they
- 5:56Speaker 3: can do two thirds of a movie perfect, and then
- 5:59Speaker 3: the last to act is like, but I haven't seen
- 6:01Speaker 3: Invested yet, but I do want to see it.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Well spoiler alert, just for a little bit of the episode,
- 6:07Speaker 6: feel free to skip ahead when we talk about Evil
- 6:09Speaker 6: Dead burn a little bit this.
- 6:13Speaker 7: I was not stoked after the.
- 6:15Speaker 6: Trailer came out, and then I think I I was.
- 6:19Speaker 3: The trailer told me hard.
- 6:22Speaker 6: It was like one of those things where I kind
- 6:24Speaker 6: of got to a point where I had to like,
- 6:27Speaker 6: I had to be open minded. I was like, Okay,
- 6:28Speaker 6: clearly this is going to do something different. I got
- 6:31Speaker 6: to a point where I was like, Okay, I'm here
- 6:32Speaker 6: for it. Let me just try it. And I the
- 6:37Speaker 6: beginning and end of this movie I don't like, but
- 6:41Speaker 6: there's a whole middle part. So the majority of the
- 6:43Speaker 6: movie in the middle I liked, I didn't love.
- 6:46Speaker 7: I liked.
- 6:47Speaker 6: There's things that I really side with and there's things
- 6:49Speaker 6: that I really really hate. So it's such a mixed
- 6:54Speaker 6: bag for me that I'm curious of how this movie ages.
- 6:59Speaker 6: But also the problem is that I saw this two
- 7:02Speaker 6: days ago, and then last night I sit down to
- 7:05Speaker 6: watch Evil Did twenty thirteen to prepare for this episode,
- 7:09Speaker 6: and I was like, holy fucking shit, Evil Did twenty
- 7:11Speaker 6: thirteen makes Evil Dead Burne look like an indie film.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Mm hm.
- 7:16Speaker 6: So I feel slightly more jaded, like I need to
- 7:18Speaker 6: watch burn again to make sure I'm right on my opinion.
- 7:21Speaker 6: I feel like, so, I don't know, what did you guys?
- 7:23Speaker 6: What did you guys think?
- 7:25Speaker 5: Brian, go for it.
- 7:28Speaker 3: I have very strong opinions on Evil to Burn because
- 7:31Speaker 3: I like you, I'm very similar. The middle is the gold,
- 7:39Speaker 3: but I feel like I need a second viewing and
- 7:41Speaker 3: not in a theater. I feel like I need to
- 7:43Speaker 3: watch it at home because singing a theater the whole
- 7:46Speaker 3: opening the first like, I don't know, twenty minutes before
- 7:50Speaker 3: they really get to the house. The filmmaking bugged me.
- 7:53Speaker 3: It was very everything was close up shots, handheld.
- 7:57Speaker 6: Oh, the editing was fucking atrocious.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Dude, Yeah, it was just I wouldn't say so much
- 8:03Speaker 3: the editing. The editing didn't bother me as much. It
- 8:05Speaker 3: was more the shot selection. It was close up, close up,
- 8:09Speaker 3: close up close.
- 8:09Speaker 6: Yeah, Well, when you're cutting rapidly from close close, close close,
- 8:12Speaker 6: it doesn't it feels choppy.
- 8:15Speaker 3: It feels choppy. Yes, I was a little concerned about
- 8:19Speaker 3: that goat when I started, because I was like, there
- 8:21Speaker 3: are parts I like, but I don't want to watch
- 8:23Speaker 3: a whole movie like this, and I'm in a theater right,
- 8:25Speaker 3: and I'm like, it's almost like being on a roller coaster, right,
- 8:29Speaker 3: You're almost too sick. So I'm hoping being like at home,
- 8:34Speaker 3: it doesn't bug me as much as the close ups
- 8:36Speaker 3: because it's not so close to my face or I'm
- 8:39Speaker 3: like looking at the screen, like moving my head constantly.
- 8:43Speaker 3: But once we get to the house, oh, when the
- 8:46Speaker 3: characters are completely unlikeable. I hated the characters were just
- 8:51Speaker 3: I was like, I don't like any of these characters.
- 8:54Speaker 3: I don't like you know. But I was watching somebody
- 8:58Speaker 3: else's YouTube re view. It was Australian. I forget his name.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Is the name is also Chris? He's a horror guy.
- 9:03Speaker 3: I forgot his name.
- 9:04Speaker 7: Is it a Q the credits?
- 9:06Speaker 3: No, not Q the credits. He's English?
- 9:08Speaker 6: Oh he is English.
- 9:09Speaker 3: That's right, this guy's Australian. He had like the freddy
- 9:13Speaker 3: thing in the back. He's got. He usually talks props.
- 9:16Speaker 3: I forgot his name. But he mentioned that French film
- 9:22Speaker 3: High Tension mm hmmm, And that made so much sense
- 9:25Speaker 3: to me once I was watching it, because this felt
- 9:28Speaker 3: more like a French horror film Evil. It's like if
- 9:32Speaker 3: this was done in French, all in French and it
- 9:35Speaker 3: wasn't Evil Dead and it was its own property. I
- 9:38Speaker 3: feel like this film is one of those that just
- 9:40Speaker 3: it's faulted by the name of the film because the
- 9:44Speaker 3: dead Heights are similar to the dead Ights we get,
- 9:46Speaker 3: but they're not the the they're different. You know. I
- 9:50Speaker 3: feel like this could have been like, oh, this is
- 9:52Speaker 3: like Evil Dead, but it's its own original French movie
- 9:55Speaker 3: that is like in the vein of like Martyrs and
- 9:59Speaker 3: High Ten. But because it's an Evil Dead film in
- 10:02Speaker 3: the franchise, we got to rate it that way. But yeah,
- 10:08Speaker 3: I really liked the middle, like I liked one. I
- 10:11Speaker 3: started going like, my favorite Dead Eyed is the girlfriend
- 10:15Speaker 3: who drinks.
- 10:16Speaker 5: The wax like Grandma.
- 10:19Speaker 3: The Grandma was cracking me up. I know a lot
- 10:21Speaker 3: of people say there's no comedy in this movie, but
- 10:23Speaker 3: I guess seeing it in a theater and people, you know,
- 10:24Speaker 3: when people start laughing behind you and then you start like, oh, yeah, that.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Is kind of fun.
- 10:29Speaker 3: You like when she's going up the thing and she goes,
- 10:32Speaker 3: I told you she was a thief.
- 10:34Speaker 7: Yeah that was the best. Yeah, that was the best
- 10:37Speaker 7: comedic moment.
- 10:38Speaker 3: But there was one part where where she's getting dragged
- 10:41Speaker 3: down the thing and it's so slow and you're like,
- 10:44Speaker 3: I think trying to be funny because she's not doing anything.
- 10:47Speaker 3: She's just slowly going, going, going, going. But I will
- 10:53Speaker 3: say my favorite part that got me excited, and it's
- 10:55Speaker 3: probably stupid, but when the Grandma was in the Ghost,
- 10:58Speaker 3: when she was in the bed sheet. Oh yeah, I
- 11:01Speaker 3: would like still to this day, there is nothing creepier
- 11:04Speaker 3: than just putting a bed sheet over a person and
- 11:08Speaker 3: like that's creepy. She just stands up and it's like,
- 11:11Speaker 3: that's cool.
- 11:12Speaker 5: Harkens back to Michael Myers in the first time.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Yeah a little bit.
- 11:16Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we can get into a couple of
- 11:19Speaker 6: the things, like more like because there is some stuff
- 11:21Speaker 6: about that scene I love to bring up.
- 11:23Speaker 7: But Steve, what was you? I know you're actually a little, I.
- 11:26Speaker 6: Think, softer on this movie than Brian and I are.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I mean, you guys obviously know I
- 11:33Speaker 5: wasn't the biggest fan of Rise. I feel like it
- 11:36Speaker 5: has an age as well as I had hoped, and
- 11:39Speaker 5: now having another entry with Burne in the franchise to
- 11:43Speaker 5: compare it to I feel like with Burne, it's it
- 11:49Speaker 5: definitely commits more to the gore. That's one thing that
- 11:51Speaker 5: I felt like was lacking a Rise. I felt like
- 11:54Speaker 5: that there was I mean, there was just there was
- 11:57Speaker 5: more gore. There was more violence. I mean, not that
- 12:00Speaker 5: that's all that I'm looking for in an Evil Dead film,
- 12:03Speaker 5: but as someone that is a huge fan of the
- 12:06Speaker 5: original one, this falls more in line with it. The
- 12:09Speaker 5: Dead Heights just felt creepier the way with like their
- 12:12Speaker 5: movements and you know, certain kill scenes or like possession scenes.
- 12:18Speaker 5: So that was just something I really appreciated. It felt
- 12:20Speaker 5: like with Rise it felt a little undercooked to me
- 12:23Speaker 5: with what they were trying to do. I think if
- 12:25Speaker 5: you had leaned in a little bit more with the
- 12:30Speaker 5: gory aspect, I think that would have maybe landed better
- 12:33Speaker 5: in my ranking. But overall I like it, I don't
- 12:37Speaker 5: love it, And kind of going back to what Chris
- 12:39Speaker 5: was saying earlier, there feel or it does feel like
- 12:43Speaker 5: that there's like a pretty big drop off between the
- 12:46Speaker 5: twenty thirteen Evil Dead compared to either of these two films.
- 12:51Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think, you know, if you're going to compare,
- 12:54Speaker 6: because in my mind, right, you have the original Evil
- 12:58Speaker 6: Dead Evil Did to Army of Darkness, right, and then
- 13:00Speaker 6: we have a kind of a kickoff of a new
- 13:02Speaker 6: separate starts with Evil Did twenty thirteen Rise now Burn
- 13:06Speaker 6: if you want to just compare, because Forda. Evra is
- 13:08Speaker 6: on a different level than either Lee Cronin or Sebastian
- 13:12Speaker 6: Vanacheck is right, so I'm going to take him out
- 13:14Speaker 6: of this equation for this part. I think Lee Cronan
- 13:19Speaker 6: is a bit of a one note pony so far.
- 13:22Speaker 6: Like Hole in the Ground was decent, he did Evil
- 13:25Speaker 6: Dead Rise, and then he did essentially Evil Dead Mummy
- 13:27Speaker 6: with The Mummy.
- 13:29Speaker 3: I haven't stop that one yet, but I kind of
- 13:31Speaker 3: want to.
- 13:32Speaker 5: Very similar cheeks man.
- 13:34Speaker 6: It's also like two hours and ten minutes long for
- 13:38Speaker 6: some reason. I don't know why, but in Sebastian Vanicheck,
- 13:43Speaker 6: I've seen both. I've seen Infested and I've seen this,
- 13:46Speaker 6: and I think Sebastian channels more the Sam Raimi visual creativity.
- 13:52Speaker 6: There is a lot of really fun camera stuff in
- 13:56Speaker 6: this movie. The use of drones is very creative. Yeah,
- 14:00Speaker 6: there is Once something starts, there's a very kinetic energy
- 14:04Speaker 6: to it, and I like have to give him credit
- 14:07Speaker 6: for the ability to choreograph some of these sequences, like
- 14:11Speaker 6: to have somebody for five minutes get tossed around a
- 14:15Speaker 6: house and smash through objects and get thrown around and
- 14:19Speaker 6: keep that interesting and energetic, very well done. The car
- 14:25Speaker 6: scene is probably my favorite of the movie because it's
- 14:27Speaker 6: trapped in this obviously stuck in an suv and they
- 14:31Speaker 6: do so much cool, so many cool stunts and great
- 14:35Speaker 6: injury work in that scene. Like it just those moments
- 14:39Speaker 6: really shine for me. And I also love, like, I
- 14:44Speaker 6: loved all the moments where the cameras upside down and
- 14:46Speaker 6: then it flips or it does this like.
- 14:49Speaker 7: Very cool visual stuff. Rise.
- 14:51Speaker 6: Like the coolest thing visually they did in that movie
- 14:53Speaker 6: was from the perspective of the people on the door,
- 14:55Speaker 6: which is like, not all that.
- 14:57Speaker 3: I love. One thing that really strugg about Rise, and
- 15:01Speaker 3: I'm I'm a I don't know the word I'm looking for,
- 15:04Speaker 3: but I'm a slug for for this kind of thing.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Split diopter shots.
- 15:08Speaker 7: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 15:09Speaker 3: I love diopter shots and when modern films can do that,
- 15:13Speaker 3: it adds a little bit more respect for me. And
- 15:15Speaker 3: they had a few split diopter shots in uh Rise,
- 15:20Speaker 3: and I liked. I liked the contained I liked that
- 15:24Speaker 3: they brought it somewhere new and it was still contained.
- 15:28Speaker 3: I like the characters a lot more in Rise than
- 15:31Speaker 3: I did in a like Burne. They were just completely unlikable,
- 15:36Speaker 3: Like in general, I actually liked this this family a
- 15:40Speaker 3: lot more. I love who is it? Amanda Sutherland. I
- 15:47Speaker 3: loved her and she was perfect.
- 15:51Speaker 5: To me.
- 15:52Speaker 3: She holds the film together. I feel like with Burn,
- 15:59Speaker 3: the cinema photography is really inconsistent and maybe on the
- 16:02Speaker 3: second view and I'll understand it more how it's telling
- 16:05Speaker 3: a story with it because watching them behind the scenes
- 16:08Speaker 3: and watching the movie, I'm like, this director is very confident.
- 16:10Speaker 3: He has a style and that's what I like. It's
- 16:12Speaker 3: a style where I feel like, I don't know if
- 16:15Speaker 3: Lee Cronin has a style, but this is the only
- 16:17Speaker 3: movie I've seen other than all the stuff I've heard
- 16:20Speaker 3: of gross out mean stuff like that, Like that's I
- 16:24Speaker 3: feel like that's more of his style where this director,
- 16:27Speaker 3: Sebastian has like a visual style that I really like.
- 16:33Speaker 3: But I don't feel like the beginning in the end
- 16:37Speaker 3: are the same. I feels like two different cinematographers, Like
- 16:41Speaker 3: because once we get to the house and you know,
- 16:43Speaker 3: like like what you were saying, my favorite shot is
- 16:45Speaker 3: like when they're in the bathroom and they can't she's
- 16:47Speaker 3: going up the wall and the camera rotating with her.
- 16:50Speaker 3: I'm like that is I'm like, whoa, you know, And
- 16:53Speaker 3: then when she leaves the house and the camera goes
- 16:56Speaker 3: down and then it turns upside down and that's when
- 16:58Speaker 3: we get the reveal of the big which but the
- 17:02Speaker 3: yeah was like whoa and Betty Alvarez had a visual style. Two.
- 17:10Speaker 3: I don't feel like the second one has that kind
- 17:12Speaker 3: of visual style, but I like the characters a lot more.
- 17:16Speaker 7: Yeah, I think.
- 17:19Speaker 6: There's a wide margin. And Steve, you and I were
- 17:22Speaker 6: talking about this right before we got on, But there's
- 17:24Speaker 6: a wide Like I don't think there's a bad Evil
- 17:26Speaker 6: Dead movie, right, even Evil Dead Burn, Like I have
- 17:28Speaker 6: issues with it. I don't think it's a bad movie.
- 17:30Speaker 6: But the gap between Evil Dead twenty thirteen and Rise
- 17:34Speaker 6: and Burn is substantial.
- 17:36Speaker 7: Like, to me, it's substantial.
- 17:39Speaker 5: I don't think. I mean, Brian, I know you were
- 17:42Speaker 5: saying that you you felt like, at least in Rise,
- 17:44Speaker 5: the characters were a little bit more likable. But I
- 17:47Speaker 5: mean for either of these films, I just had such
- 17:50Speaker 5: a low investment in either of these, like these casts
- 17:55Speaker 5: of characters that they were providing us for the story,
- 17:58Speaker 5: just you know, compared to obviously some of the earlier entries,
- 18:01Speaker 5: you're a little bit more invested or even twenty thirteen,
- 18:04Speaker 5: I felt like, you know, you kind of had something
- 18:06Speaker 5: to hold on to. I felt like the story was
- 18:08Speaker 5: a little bit more well thought out driven with like
- 18:12Speaker 5: the substance abuse angle. I know that they Chris and
- 18:16Speaker 5: I were talking about this earlier. You know, for Rise,
- 18:18Speaker 5: they tackle the motherhood aspect, whereas with Burn you're dealing
- 18:23Speaker 5: with like dometic, yeah, domestic abuse and you know, generational traumas.
- 18:30Speaker 5: I think that they're both interesting angles to it. I
- 18:32Speaker 5: just feel like twenty thirteen landed a little bit better
- 18:35Speaker 5: with what they were trying to do well.
- 18:37Speaker 6: My problem with the story of Burn is that neither
- 18:40Speaker 6: of the two main themes of the movie are built
- 18:43Speaker 6: out enough for you to care about either of them. Like,
- 18:46Speaker 6: I don't know enough about this family to understand the
- 18:51Speaker 6: history of all of this, and I don't know enough
- 18:54Speaker 6: about their marriage to understand the.
- 18:59Speaker 7: Abuse side of it.
- 19:00Speaker 6: All I know as a viewer is that she's abused
- 19:03Speaker 6: and that this family is fucked up. That's all I know. Like,
- 19:06Speaker 6: that's that's the extent of the background here. So at
- 19:12Speaker 6: least an evil dead Rise it like the story feels
- 19:17Speaker 6: surrounded by the conversation of motherhood and Carrie. You know,
- 19:22Speaker 6: you have the sister who becomes pregnant or her doubt
- 19:24Speaker 6: in being a mother. You have Alyssa Sutherlin who's a
- 19:26Speaker 6: single mom, losing her house, trying to get a job.
- 19:31Speaker 6: Like you know, you have a lot of these kind
- 19:33Speaker 6: of like you have a lot of these themes playing
- 19:37Speaker 6: into each other, and then they lean into it in
- 19:39Speaker 6: the horror where the horror becomes now all of a sudden,
- 19:42Speaker 6: the mother figure, the true mother figure, has changed and
- 19:46Speaker 6: is now going to kill the kids, and the sister
- 19:48Speaker 6: who has no intentions of being a mother now has
- 19:51Speaker 6: to forcefully become one. That plays out much better than
- 19:56Speaker 6: here's a flashback of when she got boiling water build
- 20:00Speaker 6: on her because he got mad, and it's like, oh,
- 20:02Speaker 6: and he owns a club.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Okay, here's the thing. I feel like the writing and
- 20:09Speaker 3: the writing and burn is the weakest, by far, the weakest,
- 20:13Speaker 3: And it's one of these things where I just don't
- 20:15Speaker 3: feel like things that just are so For example, he
- 20:22Speaker 3: gets mad at her because she's smoking a cigarette. The
- 20:27Speaker 3: god for he gets mad because she's smoking a cigarette.
- 20:30Speaker 3: He gets so upset he leaves and dies, you know,
- 20:34Speaker 3: the husband, the whole and they and there's plot points
- 20:39Speaker 3: that I feel like they could have worked in that
- 20:41Speaker 3: they didn't like part of the reading he got mad.
- 20:43Speaker 3: You know at the beginning when the main girl gives
- 20:46Speaker 3: the brother, the nice brother, a gift and you know
- 20:50Speaker 3: she kind of kiss I guess kisses him. He goes, WHOA,
- 20:52Speaker 3: what are you doing?
- 20:53Speaker 5: You know?
- 20:54Speaker 7: Mm hmm.
- 20:55Speaker 3: It's like they could have had a dynamic because of
- 20:57Speaker 3: the last two people alive are the other in the girl,
- 21:01Speaker 3: and they seem like they were leading to they could
- 21:03Speaker 3: have had something, even if it was unspoken. You know,
- 21:07Speaker 3: she saw him as a brother figure because she didn't
- 21:11Speaker 3: have a family or something, or she liked him more
- 21:15Speaker 3: because he was nicer. But they don't play on that.
- 21:17Speaker 3: They tease it at the beginning in the club, but
- 21:20Speaker 3: they never go further than that, when that could have
- 21:24Speaker 3: been character development for both of those characters.
- 21:28Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know.
- 21:30Speaker 6: I mean I definitely want to in the future when
- 21:34Speaker 6: this lands on physical media, I think we're gonna dedicate
- 21:37Speaker 6: I mean, see, we're probably gonna dedicate it beyond the
- 21:39Speaker 6: blood episode to it right in some capacity, like a fooler,
- 21:42Speaker 6: more fleshed out discussion for burn.
- 21:45Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I'm sure at some point.
- 21:48Speaker 7: Yeah, So I'm curious to see it again.
- 21:51Speaker 3: For now, I mean, it's like I gotta watch this again.
- 21:54Speaker 5: Listen. It wasn't as bad as a Rise. Man. That
- 21:57Speaker 5: was a struggle to do a rewatch, honest where.
- 22:00Speaker 7: Yeah we did the seat picks on Rise.
- 22:01Speaker 5: Yeah, like I was smiling through the pain.
- 22:06Speaker 6: Well, you guys, just real quick. We're already twenty minutes
- 22:08Speaker 6: into real quick. This is my least favorite in the franchise.
- 22:12Speaker 6: Let me pull up my like official power ranking here,
- 22:16Speaker 6: my power ranking.
- 22:18Speaker 5: The Necronomicon power Ranking.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Gonna hate my ranking, I'm gonna lose all.
- 22:23Speaker 6: No, I'm gonna love it.
- 22:23Speaker 7: Man Burns number one, Yeah, evil that.
- 22:27Speaker 6: Burns number one, number two, Evil Dead Burns. It's so good,
- 22:31Speaker 6: it's better than two of the other ones. So my
- 22:34Speaker 6: official ranking is Evil Dead to the Evil Dead, Evil
- 22:37Speaker 6: Dead twenty thirteen, Army of Darkness, Rise and then burn.
- 22:42Speaker 7: Steve, what about you?
- 22:44Speaker 5: Mine will go Evil Dead first one, Evil Dead two? Uh,
- 22:51Speaker 5: Evil Dead twenty thirteen, Army of Darkness Burn, then rise.
- 22:58Speaker 3: My pressures, oh Man, Evil Dead twenty thirteen.
- 23:03Speaker 5: As one, I respect it, I do.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Army of Darkness two okay, Rise three?
- 23:11Speaker 8: Okay, Ash versus Evil Dead.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Then two than one.
- 23:25Speaker 6: I thought you were gonna throw in the the episode
- 23:27Speaker 6: of the creep show series on Shutter where There's Dead.
- 23:32Speaker 3: I'm way more into the modern horror versions of these,
- 23:36Speaker 3: way more I was. I was late to Evil like
- 23:39Speaker 3: my introduction that Evil Dead was too and Army of Darkness,
- 23:43Speaker 3: and I just when twenty thirteen came out, it was like,
- 23:48Speaker 3: A was like, this is the greatest horror remaking in history.
- 23:52Speaker 5: To me, it's up there.
- 23:54Speaker 3: It's like, wow, this this is nothing like the comedy
- 23:58Speaker 3: ones I was watching. This is like, whoa, this is great.
- 24:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:02Speaker 3: I just I don't have that kind of nostalgia for
- 24:06Speaker 3: the first one with Yes, I know it's an independent film,
- 24:09Speaker 3: they have no money, but you're watching it with just
- 24:11Speaker 3: like the makeup books like shit. To me, you know,
- 24:15Speaker 3: it's just kind of like, I don't know, it's not
- 24:18Speaker 3: something I enjoyed. The second one is good, but it's
- 24:21Speaker 3: a little too campy in my opinion, but I like
- 24:24Speaker 3: the campaigns. I really like the third one. I don't know,
- 24:26Speaker 3: Army Dark and it's just like it doesn't feel like
- 24:28Speaker 3: an Evil Dead movie, but it is. And I love
- 24:31Speaker 3: Sam Raimis. It's more of a style thing. I'm attracted
- 24:34Speaker 3: to directors with like that kind of style, So I
- 24:37Speaker 3: respect the first three tremendously more than I like more
- 24:42Speaker 3: viewing it, where the later threes I'm more like watching
- 24:45Speaker 3: it as like a fan of the movie m if
- 24:48Speaker 3: that makes sense.
- 24:50Speaker 6: With any franchise that that continues on for this long,
- 24:54Speaker 6: you know, Halloween Friday the thirteenth, Like, there are people
- 24:56Speaker 6: who are bound to like the newer versions more than
- 24:59Speaker 6: the order to there's nothing wrong with it, you know
- 25:01Speaker 6: what I mean, Like, I nothing wrong at all. There's
- 25:03Speaker 6: people who like Halloween twenty eighteen probably better than the
- 25:05Speaker 6: original Halloween, you know. And it's okay because it depends
- 25:08Speaker 6: on Steve's face right now, just is it? But it
- 25:12Speaker 6: is because we would have different views if we were,
- 25:17Speaker 6: you know, twenty five watching these movies instead of being
- 25:20Speaker 6: thirty five, like and like, it depends on when you
- 25:22Speaker 6: discover them, you know.
- 25:23Speaker 5: So sure. I mean even Brian mentioned that earlier, because
- 25:26Speaker 5: I distinctly remember seeing twenty thirteen in theaters, so there's
- 25:30Speaker 5: a little bit more of an attachment to that one.
- 25:33Speaker 5: I didn't see the original three in theater obviously, because
- 25:36Speaker 5: I was too young to see him, you know, back then.
- 25:38Speaker 5: But I think for me, the first Evil Dead that
- 25:42Speaker 5: was one of the first I know for sure, one
- 25:45Speaker 5: of the first few VHS's and DVDs that I owned,
- 25:48Speaker 5: So I think that there's always that level of attachment
- 25:52Speaker 5: to that film specifically. Plus with Sam Raimi and Bruce
- 25:56Speaker 5: Campbell being local in the area, that's kind of a
- 25:59Speaker 5: huge draw for me with this, at least with the
- 26:01Speaker 5: original ones. Yeah.
- 26:03Speaker 6: Yeah, So let's segue in for anybody skipping ahead over
- 26:06Speaker 6: the Burned spoilers, we're going to dive in evil to
- 26:08Speaker 6: twenty thirteen this. I saw this in theaters and really
- 26:14Speaker 6: get the trailers and the teasers. I was very excited
- 26:18Speaker 6: going into this. I had no idea who Today Alvarez was,
- 26:22Speaker 6: you know, went into this kind of all right. I
- 26:25Speaker 6: hope they just you know, capture it the like I
- 26:28Speaker 6: was just looking for kind of like a more modern
- 26:33Speaker 6: take essentially, And what I was not prepared for was
- 26:36Speaker 6: how angry and vicious and really how I think like
- 26:44Speaker 6: the perfect word to describe this movie is like it's
- 26:47Speaker 6: everything about it is so sadistic and mean spirited, but.
- 26:53Speaker 7: It's still like.
- 26:56Speaker 6: It's still able to So, all right, how do I
- 27:00Speaker 6: just got burn? Okay, let's Burn does something at the
- 27:03Speaker 6: end that's very ridiculous, right, even for the Evil Dead franchise,
- 27:06Speaker 6: it does something very ridiculous. Yeah, even at twenty thirteen
- 27:11Speaker 6: has literally a being called the Abominable come out of
- 27:17Speaker 6: the ground for the end fight sequence, and it feels
- 27:21Speaker 6: more grounded than anything in Burn does. In my opinion, it's.
- 27:27Speaker 3: It's also with I mean, without spoiling Burn. It's it's
- 27:31Speaker 3: crazy they went that direction and Burn giving how much
- 27:34Speaker 3: practicalness I agree these franchise have. And even in this one,
- 27:38Speaker 3: which I did hear, I think I was reading somewhere
- 27:41Speaker 3: that even in Burns they didn't use icntacts, they use
- 27:44Speaker 3: c CGI their eyes. That's insane for for something, And
- 27:50Speaker 3: I was like, I feel like this film thrives on
- 27:54Speaker 3: it's practical.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Now.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Rise has that obvious CGI shot where they're melding the
- 27:59Speaker 3: body whore ye element, you know, but that's even not
- 28:04Speaker 3: near as bad as what Rice did, which again goes
- 28:07Speaker 3: back to the writing, which doesn't make sense because you
- 28:10Speaker 3: forget the dude hopped out the coffin, you don't see
- 28:13Speaker 3: him again for two hours later, and you he's not
- 28:16Speaker 3: lurking around the house, he's not, So the writing part
- 28:19Speaker 3: of that doesn't even make sense. Of why he's there
- 28:22Speaker 3: and why he comes back. But what Evil Did twenty
- 28:26Speaker 3: twenty three did, like yeah, was like when when she
- 28:36Speaker 3: comes out of the ground, it's just it's visually just
- 28:39Speaker 3: like there's so much visualness to it and it's practical,
- 28:43Speaker 3: so you know, it's real. I don't know that. That's
- 28:48Speaker 3: one of my favorite scenes, Like the whole feast on
- 28:50Speaker 3: this motherfucker, and it's like raining blood with the one
- 28:54Speaker 3: of the most visually stunning things in any horror movies.
- 28:57Speaker 5: Blood rain everywhere.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Rain, Yeah, that's what fire in the background. But Jane
- 29:02Speaker 3: Leeby's performance out does everything in this frame in this
- 29:06Speaker 3: whole series. To me, it's it's subtle things. Like one
- 29:10Speaker 3: of my favorite moments in this whole movie is when
- 29:15Speaker 3: when she's trying to get away from the abomination and
- 29:18Speaker 3: she's stuck in the little thing and you see the
- 29:20Speaker 3: sword or the machete coming through and her face the
- 29:24Speaker 3: first time it comes in in her face is like
- 29:27Speaker 3: pure shock. I'm like, that's one of the best acting
- 29:30Speaker 3: I've ever seen, Like it's so good. Yeah, little moments.
- 29:35Speaker 6: Like that, Like, well, what's interesting is today Avas comes
- 29:40Speaker 6: from cgi that that he was a visual effects artist,
- 29:44Speaker 6: and I don't like when when directors say this, But
- 29:48Speaker 6: he came out and said that there was no CG,
- 29:52Speaker 6: which there absolutely is.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Yeah, Oh, absolutely CG.
- 29:56Speaker 6: They I guess he was trying to alude that there
- 29:57Speaker 6: was no green screen, but there is. There's one very
- 30:01Speaker 6: obvious kind of full background like plate replacement in thirteen
- 30:08Speaker 6: when yeah, when he gets to the flood, when he
- 30:11Speaker 6: drives out and there's the flood. Oh oh, And I
- 30:14Speaker 6: don't know if it was a I don't I don't
- 30:15Speaker 6: know if it was a plate replacement or I don't know.
- 30:19Speaker 6: It's just that was the most obvious. And then you
- 30:21Speaker 6: have like there there's CG blood in this there's there's
- 30:25Speaker 6: CG fire. So there are visual elements post added in,
- 30:30Speaker 6: but that I think the CG in this movie stands
- 30:34Speaker 6: out when it does happen because there's so much practical
- 30:40Speaker 6: that there's moments when like, oh my god, what is
- 30:45Speaker 6: what is her name? When Natalie when she cuts her
- 30:50Speaker 6: arm off, Oh yeah, and David comes into the kitchen
- 30:56Speaker 6: and turns and her arm is hanging by like the
- 30:58Speaker 6: tendons and it.
- 31:00Speaker 5: Plops on Nary.
- 31:01Speaker 6: Yeah, there's there's a really nice mix of CG and
- 31:05Speaker 6: like practical arm falling, but the CG stuff stands out
- 31:09Speaker 6: because there's so much practical around it, if that makes sense.
- 31:13Speaker 5: Yeah, But I feel like that there aren't moments, at
- 31:16Speaker 5: least with the twenty thirteen remake, there weren't moments that
- 31:20Speaker 5: took me out of the film, whereas, like what Brian
- 31:23Speaker 5: was talking about earlier with Burne, that ending, it's like
- 31:27Speaker 5: I was enjoying it for the most part, and then
- 31:29Speaker 5: you get to this ending and it's it's like, man,
- 31:32Speaker 5: you've you've worked so hard to get to this culmination
- 31:36Speaker 5: for the entire film, and this is kind of what
- 31:38Speaker 5: we're dealing with for the ending. I don't know.
- 31:43Speaker 3: There was another part in burn that threw me out.
- 31:46Speaker 3: We're going back to the CGI when the dad is
- 31:49Speaker 3: like putting shooting themselves and like constantly the blood blat
- 31:53Speaker 3: with like three hundred style, like you could just tell
- 31:56Speaker 3: it was like not like a squib. It's it's like
- 32:00Speaker 3: thick and gloomy. It's really glooby, and it doesn't move.
- 32:04Speaker 3: The physics are like it's more somo and it just
- 32:07Speaker 3: doesn't feel like like an actual thing, and that kind
- 32:11Speaker 3: of threw me out a little bit. I'm like, oh,
- 32:13Speaker 3: this is just like three hundred or Sparta Kiss.
- 32:15Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, well you guys for Evil Dead twenty thirteen. Still,
- 32:19Speaker 6: my favorite thing about this whole entire movie is the beginning.
- 32:23Speaker 7: I love the cold open beginning.
- 32:25Speaker 5: Oh, it's incredible.
- 32:27Speaker 6: The scene in the woods going into the basement of
- 32:30Speaker 6: what we find out is the basement of the cabin,
- 32:32Speaker 6: and the sequence where we have.
- 32:36Speaker 7: A father.
- 32:39Speaker 6: Basically has his daughter tied to a steak or a
- 32:42Speaker 6: support beam in the basement as a woman is reading
- 32:45Speaker 6: from the Necronomicon and he's dumping gasoline on her and
- 32:50Speaker 6: we still have no we haven't seen any deadite come
- 32:52Speaker 6: from her, because we know the dead Dites have the
- 32:53Speaker 6: ability to trick and to tease, right, we know that
- 32:56Speaker 6: from the original movies. But this seems so good going
- 33:00Speaker 6: into that you might not know that. So here here's
- 33:03Speaker 6: his father pouring gasolina and you have no idea what
- 33:05Speaker 6: to think, and then it does.
- 33:07Speaker 7: Oh dude.
- 33:09Speaker 6: There's a moment when when he's lighting he goes to
- 33:13Speaker 6: like the first match and it doesn't and she's like, Daddy,
- 33:16Speaker 6: like you can tell there's a tone change, And then
- 33:19Speaker 6: he lights it and sticks up in front of her
- 33:21Speaker 6: and it illuminates her and she says, what you say,
- 33:24Speaker 6: I'll rip your fucking soul.
- 33:26Speaker 3: Hard, No, no, But it's it's what she does before
- 33:29Speaker 3: the case, because she said it so subtly, like right
- 33:31Speaker 3: before she has Daddy, I'll rip your soul. Like she
- 33:34Speaker 3: says it so like almost like skate like calmly, and
- 33:38Speaker 3: then he lights it and then she says it again
- 33:40Speaker 3: like all furious, I'll rip your soul. But it's that
- 33:43Speaker 3: subtle like daddy, I'll rip your fucking soul loud or
- 33:46Speaker 3: something like like damn.
- 33:49Speaker 7: I even love.
- 33:50Speaker 6: I love when she's burning and she's going fuck like
- 33:54Speaker 6: like it hurts, you know what I mean.
- 33:55Speaker 5: She's like, but they're like, that's a prime example of
- 33:59Speaker 5: a performs like that, which it's genuinely terrifying compared to
- 34:04Speaker 5: anything that we've gotten in these last two films, like
- 34:07Speaker 5: I I mean Evil to twenty thirteen, it's a it's
- 34:12Speaker 5: a very like mean spirited movie like through and through. Yeah,
- 34:16Speaker 5: And I just never quite got that feeling from either
- 34:20Speaker 5: of these two movies that we've seen recently.
- 34:24Speaker 6: Evil did twenty thirteen to me feels like a completed vision.
- 34:28Speaker 6: So even this opening scene and we see this later
- 34:31Speaker 6: when they go into the basement. Even the detail of
- 34:34Speaker 6: having like the dead cats being hung up by the
- 34:36Speaker 6: barb wire all around the basement, the look of the necronomicon, even,
- 34:41Speaker 6: I dude, I fucking love the music for Evil Dead
- 34:46Speaker 6: twenty thirteen. The score I believe his name is. I
- 34:49Speaker 6: believe it's Rogue Banos. It was the composer for this.
- 34:55Speaker 6: Everything feels complete and thought out and really like from
- 35:00Speaker 6: from top to bottom.
- 35:03Speaker 7: Like just really well established.
- 35:07Speaker 6: The cabin feels a certain way, right, there's a certain
- 35:12Speaker 6: established to the cabin, The woods are established a certain way,
- 35:16Speaker 6: there's an atmosphere, everything is set up so well. Whereas
- 35:20Speaker 6: you know, Burn just kind of takes place in a
- 35:23Speaker 6: gray old house.
- 35:25Speaker 7: It doesn't really feel even.
- 35:27Speaker 6: That Rise takes place in an old apartment building that's
- 35:31Speaker 6: falling apart. There's something about even at twenty thirteen that
- 35:35Speaker 6: feels like a completed vision all the way through.
- 35:39Speaker 5: Was it just me or like it felt like the
- 35:42Speaker 5: house that they are the manor I guess I would
- 35:45Speaker 5: say in Burn, it doesn't even feel like it's inhabitable,
- 35:48Speaker 5: Like it felt like it was like basically rotting apart,
- 35:51Speaker 5: Like how can you guys stay here.
- 35:53Speaker 6: Well, that was the sun. It was given to the sun.
- 35:55Speaker 6: I remember that's what the father says, like, we give
- 35:57Speaker 6: you this place and you let it fall apart.
- 36:00Speaker 5: Man, it was a bad It had to have been
- 36:02Speaker 5: in a bad condition even well before then.
- 36:04Speaker 6: It doesn't feel real, Like the cabin feels dirty and
- 36:09Speaker 6: dilapidated because it's in the woods. And even when they
- 36:11Speaker 6: get there, she, you know, Jane Levy's character says like, oh,
- 36:17Speaker 6: Mom and Dad would hate to see the cabin held
- 36:19Speaker 6: up this way, but they still make it semi livable.
- 36:23Speaker 7: But this cabin in the woods.
- 36:25Speaker 6: Feels more like more I don't know, real than the
- 36:30Speaker 6: house doesn't burn.
- 36:32Speaker 3: I also feel twenty thirteen people accept one beside it
- 36:36Speaker 3: just being the better film overall, people accept it more
- 36:40Speaker 3: because it's what they remember in the older ones. It
- 36:43Speaker 3: is the cabin in the woods, exactly happened in the woods.
- 36:46Speaker 3: It's the same cards, it's the same thing. It's like
- 36:51Speaker 3: those action movies where it's like, Okay, we did the
- 36:52Speaker 3: first one. Now we're gonna go to Europe for the
- 36:55Speaker 3: second one, and then we're going to go you know,
- 36:57Speaker 3: we're gonna turn this into you know, how can we
- 36:59Speaker 3: make this different, like what's wrong with just the cabin
- 37:02Speaker 3: in the woods, And I get you gotta you have
- 37:04Speaker 3: to switch it up, like you kind of have to
- 37:06Speaker 3: because that's a very small cabin and you can't have
- 37:09Speaker 3: the thing. But the thing that I feel like they
- 37:12Speaker 3: they've teased twice and they not done anything with was
- 37:16Speaker 3: the lake house. We've never had the lake house, Like, like,
- 37:19Speaker 3: imagine the whole movie take place at that lake house,
- 37:23Speaker 3: because I feel like one of the best parts of
- 37:25Speaker 3: Rise is the lake house, and one of the best
- 37:27Speaker 3: parts of Burns is the beginning with the fishermen and
- 37:31Speaker 3: the thing, So like, why can't you just said it
- 37:35Speaker 3: there instead of teasing that, it's like, look, we're in
- 37:38Speaker 3: the woods, and then no, we're gonna go completely somewhere else.
- 37:41Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, yeah, Well even did twenty thirteen as a
- 37:45Speaker 6: and from now on, I'm just gonna say evil Dead,
- 37:48Speaker 6: just that the listener understands that when we're talking about yeah,
- 37:52Speaker 6: you know, evil Dead feels it feels indebted to that
- 37:59Speaker 6: first movie. Or there's two movies in ways that I
- 38:01Speaker 6: really love, even down to the tree being struck by
- 38:03Speaker 6: lightning catching on fire where he's gonna do the burial
- 38:07Speaker 6: the shed being you know, the detached shed, the actual woods,
- 38:13Speaker 6: the cabin. But they add just enough newness into it
- 38:19Speaker 6: all and just enough variety into everything for.
- 38:21Speaker 7: Me not to feel like I'm.
- 38:25Speaker 6: Watching a remake. It's kind of like, Okay, we have
- 38:28Speaker 6: the same bones, but there's new flesh on here.
- 38:31Speaker 5: Like they're just like there's like some clever nods. Because
- 38:35Speaker 5: like when we first see the opening scene with Mia
- 38:37Speaker 5: in it, she's wearing that Michigan State sweatshirt that's a
- 38:41Speaker 5: callback yep to the first one, and then she's sitting
- 38:44Speaker 5: on a car yep on the old smobile. So it's
- 38:47Speaker 5: it's like little things like that. You can clearly tell
- 38:50Speaker 5: Betty Alvarez, you know, has a lot of love and
- 38:52Speaker 5: respect for the original films, but always I rewatch. I
- 38:57Speaker 5: always appreciate that being a of Michigan State too.
- 39:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it felt like this new one had like like, oh,
- 39:06Speaker 3: you think we're gonna do this, but we're gonna do
- 39:07Speaker 3: something else kind of thing that that's the version of
- 39:11Speaker 3: expectations like chainsaw, but we're not gonna use it. We're
- 39:15Speaker 3: just gonna you know, at the end, we see there
- 39:19Speaker 3: was something else, like she's reading from the book she
- 39:21Speaker 3: gets to the last words and she's like, Nope, I'm
- 39:23Speaker 3: not going to do this. Yeah, yeah, okay, Which, by
- 39:28Speaker 3: the way, is this the first one where a dead
- 39:32Speaker 3: eighte reads from the book to summon the evil? Because
- 39:36Speaker 3: remember at the beginning of Burn when the girl from
- 39:39Speaker 3: the lake had their head cut off and she's the
- 39:42Speaker 3: guy trapped in the car and she's saying kunda but
- 39:45Speaker 3: like she's saying it the thing, I've never.
- 39:48Speaker 5: Remember it in any other ones.
- 39:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't remember dead I summoning the evil.
- 39:55Speaker 6: Well, I want to ask you as a question, because
- 39:57Speaker 6: we had this conversation we're talking about evil dead rise,
- 39:59Speaker 6: which is is we we kind of discussed there being
- 40:03Speaker 6: this overarching power right to the necronomicon, which is which
- 40:08Speaker 6: pulls people in. And because you come on, let's be
- 40:11Speaker 6: real man, you come across this book is in a
- 40:14Speaker 6: in a basement with dead cats rotting, hanging from barbwire.
- 40:20Speaker 6: It's covered in barbed wire and paper like, I'm not
- 40:24Speaker 6: going to go to the links that Eric goes to
- 40:27Speaker 6: read this, and again he's a teacher, he's he clearly
- 40:31Speaker 6: is a very intelligent guy who's gonna get this.
- 40:34Speaker 7: But this feels like.
- 40:38Speaker 6: It feels like from the beginning of the movie like
- 40:40Speaker 6: this is going to happen, and the book knows who
- 40:43Speaker 6: to draw into it, and so it pulls in Eric.
- 40:46Speaker 6: And even once Eric gets into it, and in all
- 40:49Speaker 6: the movies, there seems to be this like almost like
- 40:53Speaker 6: an obsession over it.
- 40:54Speaker 7: Right, it's this like.
- 40:55Speaker 6: I need to figure out what this is, and it's
- 40:58Speaker 6: drawing you in and it knows exactly who it needs
- 41:01Speaker 6: to attach to unleash it because it needs an external
- 41:03Speaker 6: force at all. Yeah, exactly. So it's very alluring to
- 41:09Speaker 6: Eric to open and read it. And then Jane Levy
- 41:13Speaker 6: characters Mia. She is in a perfect space of vulnerability
- 41:18Speaker 6: to be taken over.
- 41:21Speaker 7: So it's also perfectly.
- 41:23Speaker 6: Planned, and it's almost like another family could have arrived
- 41:27Speaker 6: at this cabinet state and never would have tried to
- 41:29Speaker 6: beckon them. But this was the perfect setup of people
- 41:34Speaker 6: who could make this work.
- 41:35Speaker 5: I love that her character subverts expectations, because if you're
- 41:39Speaker 5: just strictly going off the beginning, you know, her introduction,
- 41:43Speaker 5: she had already od by this point, right, and they
- 41:46Speaker 5: had to to pipulate her. And you know, she obviously
- 41:50Speaker 5: has a very checkered history, so we're dealing with things
- 41:54Speaker 5: on that angle where she's already hard to trust in general,
- 41:58Speaker 5: and then what happened will go sound obviously in the woods.
- 42:02Speaker 5: You know they're kind of questioning her, you know what
- 42:05Speaker 5: exactly is going on. But I mean, when you guys
- 42:08Speaker 5: first saw this movie, did you expect that she was
- 42:10Speaker 5: going to take the turn that she does with her
- 42:13Speaker 5: character development? I did it?
- 42:17Speaker 7: I neither, Yeah, I don't.
- 42:20Speaker 6: I don't remember if I thought she was gonna I
- 42:23Speaker 6: thought once she became a dead eighte, then she was gonna.
- 42:25Speaker 7: Yea dead and I thought David.
- 42:28Speaker 6: Was going to become But it's very smart for David
- 42:32Speaker 6: to bury her alive. She comes back as human and
- 42:37Speaker 6: then David's the one who ends up biting the dust
- 42:39Speaker 6: and she has to fight. But in a storytelling environment,
- 42:45Speaker 6: this makes perfect sense because she they mentioned how she's
- 42:49Speaker 6: gonna get really rough. She's backed out before of this
- 42:53Speaker 6: and went right back into her habits. That's what led
- 42:55Speaker 6: into the od and she has to want to fight
- 42:58Speaker 6: for it, and that's where her character ends up to
- 43:00Speaker 6: do at the end, especially like the moment when the
- 43:03Speaker 6: car flips onto her arm and the only way she
- 43:06Speaker 6: can survive is to literally rip it off, rip her
- 43:10Speaker 6: own arm, which is a very plain way of saying
- 43:13Speaker 6: the only way she was gonna side from the drugs
- 43:15Speaker 6: is to just rip it off and just stop it.
- 43:16Speaker 8: Stop cold turkey, right, just cut the habit out exactly.
- 43:21Speaker 6: Yeah, So that's what she does for the arm. And
- 43:24Speaker 6: there's this great one thing I picked up when I
- 43:26Speaker 6: watched it is this this great consistency with her family,
- 43:32Speaker 6: not really like not like there's this there's this like
- 43:38Speaker 6: character trait with him and his sister of not ever
- 43:41Speaker 6: fully committing and kind of being afraid of disappointing one another,
- 43:46Speaker 6: you know each other. And then finally at the end,
- 43:48Speaker 6: David has to make that decision of all right, I'm
- 43:50Speaker 6: gonna end this thing, like I'm finally gonna commit and
- 43:52Speaker 6: I'm gonna end this thing because according to her, he's done.
- 43:56Speaker 6: He's never committed to anything in his life. He's never
- 43:58Speaker 6: fully been the ether that she needs or that she
- 44:01Speaker 6: feels like she needed. So the characters here I thought
- 44:06Speaker 6: were really well developed and it plays really well into
- 44:10Speaker 6: the story if you could pick up I think on
- 44:12Speaker 6: the little the little hints that it kind of completes
- 44:16Speaker 6: those arcs with you know what, I.
- 44:17Speaker 5: Mean, oh, totally Eric.
- 44:21Speaker 6: In this movie, the friend is fucked. Bro, I've never
- 44:25Speaker 6: seen anybody get hurt more in a single movie life.
- 44:30Speaker 3: I don't like him at all. I don't like his
- 44:33Speaker 3: character at all. This movie has a bunch of characters
- 44:38Speaker 3: that you you just like you don't like, but they're
- 44:42Speaker 3: not near as unlikable as the other movies. Like like
- 44:45Speaker 3: even the god I don't know her name, the one
- 44:48Speaker 3: who liked the nurse like like she was kind of yeah,
- 44:52Speaker 3: she She's like, look, we don't need to bring it
- 44:54Speaker 3: to a hospital. I'm giving her the treatment, like so
- 44:58Speaker 3: conceded it everything and like her ability to do stuff.
- 45:04Speaker 3: And the only thing I don't really like is none
- 45:07Speaker 3: of these guys actually seem like friends. Yeah, they don't know,
- 45:11Speaker 3: there's a lot of time between them. Even the girlfriend
- 45:15Speaker 3: doesn't feel like like they don't have any things together. Really, Yeah,
- 45:21Speaker 3: I'm assuming that's the girlfriend, the one who cuts off
- 45:24Speaker 3: her arm.
- 45:25Speaker 7: Yeah, that's that's David's girlfriend.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Yeah, but you almost got to put that together in
- 45:30Speaker 3: your head in a way kind of Well, I think.
- 45:33Speaker 6: There's just so much tension on this on this friend group,
- 45:37Speaker 6: see David. I mean, according to the story, David kind
- 45:39Speaker 6: of ran away, you know, he went and accepted his job.
- 45:42Speaker 6: He wasn't there for the passing of him and me
- 45:44Speaker 6: his mother. You know, he blames that work with excusels
- 45:47Speaker 6: just starting.
- 45:48Speaker 5: A new job.
- 45:49Speaker 6: So clearly this is a guy very afraid of facing
- 45:52Speaker 6: any real opposition or challenge in his life.
- 45:54Speaker 7: And his sister.
- 45:57Speaker 6: Was a challenge, right, And I guess his mindset is
- 45:59Speaker 6: a golf not there that I don't really have to
- 46:01Speaker 6: worry about it, or I don't have to accept responsibility
- 46:05Speaker 6: for helping. And then you have Eric and Olivia, who
- 46:09Speaker 6: I think are Are.
- 46:09Speaker 7: They a couple?
- 46:11Speaker 3: That's what I thought. That's another thing that didn't make sense.
- 46:14Speaker 3: It feels like they're a couple, but they don't seem
- 46:16Speaker 3: like they would be a couple.
- 46:19Speaker 5: Yeah at all.
- 46:19Speaker 6: Yeah, So I guess David left them to essentially take
- 46:23Speaker 6: care of MEA Yeah. So everything here is so fractured
- 46:30Speaker 6: and tense, And I don't mind that I don't feel
- 46:38Speaker 6: their friendship as much because I can understand this sort
- 46:44Speaker 6: of unspoken.
- 46:47Speaker 7: Kind of I guess tension.
- 46:51Speaker 5: Because you've spent some history for sure, between all of them.
- 46:54Speaker 5: I think Mia is probably the binding glue to just
- 46:58Speaker 5: how bad things have got and it seems like they've
- 47:01Speaker 5: had to deal with her situation time and time again.
- 47:04Speaker 5: It seems like David it hasn't really been all that
- 47:07Speaker 5: present with it. But what I thought was interesting I
- 47:11Speaker 5: made a note of this. Someone pointed out that if
- 47:14Speaker 5: you take the letter the first letter of each of
- 47:18Speaker 5: the main casts, so you have David, Eric, Mia, Olivia,
- 47:24Speaker 5: and Natalie, it spells out demon oh really, which I
- 47:28Speaker 5: thought was really clai. I was like, oh, I never
- 47:29Speaker 5: would have got not something I would have picked up on.
- 47:33Speaker 5: But that's cool, good on fetti.
- 47:35Speaker 3: Well, let me ask you guys, because this just came
- 47:38Speaker 3: into my head right now, and let me know if
- 47:39Speaker 3: you guys think this works or this doesn't work, Like
- 47:42Speaker 3: do you need a broken I don't think you do.
- 47:47Speaker 3: Do you need a broken family to make an Evil
- 47:49Speaker 3: Dead movie work? Do they feel like twenty thirteen? Obviously
- 47:55Speaker 3: fractured family? You know, rise obviously, uh, a little bit
- 48:02Speaker 3: more put together? The family, the family, but the sister
- 48:04Speaker 3: and the two sisters have a mixed relationship, and then
- 48:07Speaker 3: you get to burn where everybody's just fucking like in
- 48:11Speaker 3: their own drama. But if it, you know, I don't
- 48:14Speaker 3: remember in the you know the original ones, it being
- 48:17Speaker 3: that like they were friends, Like you could tell they
- 48:20Speaker 3: were friends when they went to the cabin in the woods.
- 48:22Speaker 3: Like I'll give the original Sami Sam Raimi's this is
- 48:27Speaker 3: they actually feel like they're friends and then just bad
- 48:30Speaker 3: shit happens to them.
- 48:32Speaker 5: Yeah, the second one, right, a couple.
- 48:36Speaker 3: Yeah, they're a couple, and they feel like they actually
- 48:38Speaker 3: feel like a couple, and you know, they're not broken,
- 48:42Speaker 3: they're they're they're not going to a cabin to work
- 48:45Speaker 3: through their grief and then this should happened. So I
- 48:49Speaker 3: guess also, sorry, go ahead, No, I was just saying,
- 48:53Speaker 3: it's like I guess I would have liked to see
- 48:55Speaker 3: the future of this is what does it look like
- 48:58Speaker 3: when a family really half the Well, I guess I
- 49:02Speaker 3: can't say that's basically rise when the family has to
- 49:06Speaker 3: stick together, but I guess when they're not.
- 49:08Speaker 5: As broken, Yeah, I see what we're saying.
- 49:12Speaker 3: You know, because they feel like that's the common thread
- 49:14Speaker 3: with these new ones is it has to be a
- 49:16Speaker 3: broken family for this to happen to them, where that
- 49:19Speaker 3: was never the case in the originals.
- 49:22Speaker 6: Well, somebody had brought this up in a post that
- 49:24Speaker 6: I saw. They were confused at people who were complaining
- 49:28Speaker 6: that there was no emotional core like to Evil that Burned.
- 49:33Speaker 6: They were like, what do you care about the emotion?
- 49:37Speaker 6: He was like, well, I guess his thing was like
- 49:38Speaker 6: why focus on that? Like I just want there to
- 49:41Speaker 6: be gored stuff like that, And that's sort of what
- 49:43Speaker 6: the original, like, the original Evil Dead is Evil Dead
- 49:47Speaker 6: one and two in my opinion, are showcases, right, their
- 49:49Speaker 6: effects showcases. There's zany and nobody really remembers or talks
- 49:54Speaker 6: about any of the friendships of those relationships or even
- 49:57Speaker 6: any of the characters besides Bruce Campbell because he is
- 50:01Speaker 6: fucking incredible in the character of Ash.
- 50:05Speaker 7: But there are showcases.
- 50:06Speaker 6: For just how wild and zany, you know, the effects
- 50:11Speaker 6: are and the visuals are, and like movies back then
- 50:15Speaker 6: in the seventies or late seventies, early eighties, I feel
- 50:19Speaker 6: like you could get away with kind of not as
- 50:23Speaker 6: much needing to attach people to a like a core
- 50:27Speaker 6: emotional thing like they have to relate to, and you
- 50:29Speaker 6: could just make.
- 50:31Speaker 7: A visual.
- 50:33Speaker 6: You know, like you could you could rely heavily on
- 50:35Speaker 6: just doing crazy practical effects and that's what's driving the
- 50:40Speaker 6: story along, right, And your main core is just survival.
- 50:44Speaker 6: Now everything has to be weighted down, there has to
- 50:48Speaker 6: be there has to be like this just overarching traumatic
- 50:56Speaker 6: cloud over everything. And if this is something I was
- 51:00Speaker 6: thinking about with Burn, which is like if everybody in
- 51:07Speaker 6: Evil Dead Burn could have just gotten along and the
- 51:10Speaker 6: family is broken because there's been a divorce and a
- 51:13Speaker 6: death and they could have all got along and this
- 51:16Speaker 6: could have happened the same way, except everybody actually cares
- 51:20Speaker 6: for each other instead of just everybody being basically a
- 51:22Speaker 6: piece of shit and kind of out for their own thing.
- 51:26Speaker 6: So I don't know.
- 51:27Speaker 7: I mean, even.
- 51:30Speaker 6: Even Army of Darkness doesn't have like a there's no
- 51:36Speaker 6: trauma an Army of Darkness, right, there's no, it's just darkness.
- 51:41Speaker 3: Is also the only one that's completely left field.
- 51:45Speaker 6: It is, but it's also it's zany, right, it's zany.
- 51:48Speaker 6: It's got cool characters, it takes place in a cool setting.
- 51:52Speaker 3: Yeah. Like so it makes sense too because it ties
- 51:56Speaker 3: back to the beginning of the second one. You see
- 51:58Speaker 3: the castle and stuff at the beginning of the second one.
- 52:02Speaker 5: Go, yeah, So.
- 52:04Speaker 6: I don't I don't know. I think you can do
- 52:06Speaker 6: an Evil Dead with no deep trauma associated with it.
- 52:12Speaker 6: I think I don't think it's I think that would
- 52:15Speaker 6: be interesting though, if you had like a family that
- 52:17Speaker 6: just like was a normal, happy family and then all
- 52:21Speaker 6: of a sudden one of them become a dead ite
- 52:24Speaker 6: and begin terrorizing everybody else. But I think, going back
- 52:27Speaker 6: to what I said earlier, I think the draw of
- 52:32Speaker 6: the necronomicon is on these broken households. This is where
- 52:38Speaker 6: it can easily get in the most because an evil
- 52:41Speaker 6: dead rise. In our discussion that we had on staff Picks,
- 52:46Speaker 6: we talked about, like, what are the odds that the
- 52:48Speaker 6: earthquake happened when the kids are in the parking garage?
- 52:53Speaker 6: Like clearly everything was timed. It was all very much
- 52:56Speaker 6: on a system of like, Okay, this is going to happen.
- 52:59Speaker 6: If the sun is going to go down there, he's
- 53:01Speaker 6: gonna find it. He's going to bring it in this
- 53:03Speaker 6: household exactly. So if you're looking at it that way,
- 53:07Speaker 6: it makes sense that you would that this would be
- 53:11Speaker 6: the group of people to unleash this, right.
- 53:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I just feel like as a whole, this this film,
- 53:22Speaker 5: I feel like, feels a lot more compelling. I think
- 53:26Speaker 5: I have more of a higher investment in any of
- 53:29Speaker 5: these characters for that matter because at least they're I
- 53:33Speaker 5: don't know, their dynamics interesting. It's very strained, but I
- 53:38Speaker 5: don't know. I love the angle that they took with Mia,
- 53:41Speaker 5: especially because I mean, if you didn't know any better,
- 53:43Speaker 5: you would assume like she's gonna be the worst of
- 53:46Speaker 5: the worst or the most susceptible and basically subverts all
- 53:51Speaker 5: expectations by the end of this film, and you know,
- 53:54Speaker 5: was able to come out and top and it's a
- 53:56Speaker 5: complete badass. Yeah.
- 53:59Speaker 3: I mean, clearly the best performance at all of them.
- 54:04Speaker 3: What do you guys feel about them taking the original
- 54:09Speaker 3: being the only To my mind, because I'm not as
- 54:11Speaker 3: big into horror as you guys, Ash was always like
- 54:15Speaker 3: the he was the final dude. You know what I'm saying.
- 54:18Speaker 3: He was the only like final guy, and they like
- 54:21Speaker 3: that doesn't exist anymore, and I don't think it's really existed.
- 54:24Speaker 3: Even when he was around, it was he was it,
- 54:29Speaker 3: and now we're just like Final Girl, Final Girl, which
- 54:31Speaker 3: I love. I don't have a problem with the Final Girl,
- 54:33Speaker 3: but I feel like the one thing that this had
- 54:35Speaker 3: that was original was we had the final guy. Mm
- 54:41Speaker 3: and now we don't anymore. In three movies, it's we've
- 54:44Speaker 3: never had a guy lead character.
- 54:47Speaker 6: I also don't think there is yet to be discovered
- 54:51Speaker 6: a a.
- 54:53Speaker 8: Personality replacement for for for Ash kind of a thing
- 54:57Speaker 8: like there's just no who can you think of that
- 55:01Speaker 8: that that has any of the style that Bruce Campbell
- 55:06Speaker 8: brings to his performances, true, like the guy just has.
- 55:11Speaker 7: Something to him. There's a there's an energy, there's a style, there's.
- 55:16Speaker 6: A charm he like and you can't I can't think
- 55:21Speaker 6: of a single modern day actor that would be recognizable,
- 55:26Speaker 6: meaning like on a sense of like people would know
- 55:28Speaker 6: who he is that has this going for him or
- 55:33Speaker 6: could channel this.
- 55:35Speaker 3: This may sound weird, but and I know because he's
- 55:37Speaker 3: kind of hot, right, like hot, like he's making a lot.
- 55:40Speaker 3: But Glenn Powell, I say that wholy because I feel
- 55:46Speaker 3: like he comes from Cone before he was a pretty
- 55:49Speaker 3: boy in what he does now, like he came from
- 55:53Speaker 3: this goofy kind but maybe he's too goofy with this
- 55:56Speaker 3: comedy like like you look at screen Queens and like
- 56:00Speaker 3: that like that Glen Pal maybe not modern Glenpal, but
- 56:03Speaker 3: like Scream Queens like back in the day.
- 56:05Speaker 5: Maybe Brian's like my my runner up option. Timothy s
- 56:09Speaker 5: I'm like, okay, we're done here.
- 56:12Speaker 3: I tend to even say glimpo because I'm like, he's
- 56:14Speaker 3: too popular.
- 56:15Speaker 7: Austin Butler, but he's stop.
- 56:19Speaker 5: Come on, you know.
- 56:21Speaker 6: I just had a brief moment where I pictured Adam
- 56:23Speaker 6: Driver as Ash.
- 56:24Speaker 7: I don't know, no, yeah, just nobody can do it.
- 56:30Speaker 6: And I be honest with you, I just don't most
- 56:35Speaker 6: guys in horror movies like I Want to Die, they
- 56:39Speaker 6: paint them as people that I'm.
- 56:41Speaker 3: Like, that's a thing though, It's like, you know you
- 56:43Speaker 3: have these even in burn Like that was the closest
- 56:47Speaker 3: we get to male characters again since twenty thirteen. Twenty
- 56:50Speaker 3: thirteen probably had the most. I mean, I didn't like
- 56:53Speaker 3: the friend with the glasses. I forgot his name, Eric Eric.
- 56:57Speaker 3: I didn't. I didn't care for the brother and the
- 57:01Speaker 3: brother and the new one is a kind of a
- 57:03Speaker 3: pussy the whole movie.
- 57:04Speaker 5: You know, he's not really they're not likable.
- 57:06Speaker 3: No, they're not likable.
- 57:08Speaker 6: So can we talk about Evil Dead twenty thirteen from
- 57:12Speaker 6: a style standpoint?
- 57:15Speaker 3: Because it's amazing, dude, it's Steve.
- 57:18Speaker 5: Go ahead before I say this, I was gonna say
- 57:21Speaker 5: the tongue splitting scene just any the gore in this movie,
- 57:27Speaker 5: it just it scratches an itch for me, and and
- 57:32Speaker 5: it's just so uncomfortable. It's not only the gore, it's
- 57:36Speaker 5: the sound effects that they use for certain key sequences.
- 57:41Speaker 5: I don't again, I don't think that either of the
- 57:44Speaker 5: two movies we've gotten after this film have come close,
- 57:47Speaker 5: Like no, no, you're remotely close. You get again, Burne.
- 57:50Speaker 5: I felt like it was a step up. I can't
- 57:53Speaker 5: forgive Rise for the cheese greater hype that turned out
- 57:58Speaker 5: to be a big fucking nothing but Evil Dead twenty thirteen.
- 58:03Speaker 5: Man like some of the the crowbar, the nail gun,
- 58:09Speaker 5: the tongue splitting, the meal, like the arm with the
- 58:15Speaker 5: yeah oh that yeah, yeah, that's that. Yeah, that's also true.
- 58:19Speaker 6: It's gotta be because of like I love when and
- 58:22Speaker 6: this is something that Radio Silence does really well and
- 58:25Speaker 6: ready or Not and in in Abigail Right, I know
- 58:30Speaker 6: a lot of the blood and those movies are is
- 58:32Speaker 6: cg like most of the blood spray and stuff like that,
- 58:35Speaker 6: but there's something too like it's practical. Well, you're right,
- 58:40Speaker 6: because they did and they did really blow up.
- 58:43Speaker 3: Blood everywhere a lot of stuff, But they like the
- 58:47Speaker 3: blood part like the blood cannons they use are practical
- 58:52Speaker 3: and they're like, I guess enhance it with CGI, but yeah, really.
- 58:55Speaker 6: It's for me.
- 58:56Speaker 7: It's the crud.
- 58:57Speaker 6: It's the fact that everything in this movie feels like
- 59:01Speaker 6: it's aged in the minutes, dirty it's happened, it's dirty,
- 59:04Speaker 6: it's stuck on people's clothing.
- 59:07Speaker 3: The just the it feels like you're going to get
- 59:10Speaker 3: a tennis shot when somebody happens, like when Mia gets
- 59:14Speaker 3: the machete in the leg and he's just like ugh, yeah.
- 59:19Speaker 7: And it's the volume of blood.
- 59:21Speaker 6: It's even when it's when Eric is getting hit with
- 59:24Speaker 6: the crowbar and it splits his hand into two, where
- 59:30Speaker 6: it's like there's something about the violence that just feels
- 59:33Speaker 6: it has impact. You feel it when she when she
- 59:37Speaker 6: uses the meat cutter to cut her arm off, and
- 59:41Speaker 6: you can tell that, you could tell that they had
- 59:45Speaker 6: an arm appliance that she just was getting into and
- 59:48Speaker 6: having all the blood shoot like I don't know, it
- 59:50Speaker 6: feels like even when you see the the when he
- 59:53Speaker 6: when David goes in the kitchen after she's done that
- 59:56Speaker 6: and there's just this massive pile of real blood on
- 59:59Speaker 6: the floor and then there's just blood and dirt everywhere.
- 1:00:04Speaker 7: It feels different. It just sells differently.
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: Can I can I add because I just recently watched
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: it and it's it's it's very different obviously film in itself,
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: but the Texas Chainsaw three remake had that very dirty
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: feel to it, just just grimy, sweaty, bloody. I feel
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: like that this is almost like kind of in the
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: same vein with just how gritty. It feels like. There's
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: not too many horror films I feel like we're coming around,
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: coming out around this time that I feel like really
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: embraces it just has like a certain sthetic to it.
- 1:00:44Speaker 7: Yeah, it was like there's dirt in the wounds, you know,
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: that kind of thing.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: Twenty thirteen. I can't think of like other horror movies
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: that were even close to this, like that were that came.
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: Out like a remax or just horror just in general.
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: Like in twenty thirteen, we had Oh well, you had
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: the Conjuring Insidious chapter two came out.
- 1:01:09Speaker 7: Let's see, let's look.
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: At the top. But those are like ghost stories.
- 1:01:14Speaker 7: Yeah, so let's look at the top.
- 1:01:16Speaker 6: This is a list of top sixty five horror movies
- 1:01:19Speaker 6: from twenty thirteen. We had the Carry remake, which is
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: not good. The Purge comes out.
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: We have consider the Purge horror that much.
- 1:01:33Speaker 6: World war Z, No Insidious, Chapter two, Ghost, Let's see
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: hands On Gretel Witch Hunters.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: Which is just fun. I love that movie, but it's yeah, fun,
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: it's not horror.
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:01:49Speaker 6: Oh my fucking god. The Green Inverno, I fucking hate
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: that movie.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: Oh oh Jesus.
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: Christ, Texas Chainsaw three d do you think cuz that
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: comes out twenty three or it comes out twenty thirteen?
- 1:02:03Speaker 6: Oh my god.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: The best thing that movie gave us was Alexandra Didaria.
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: Yes, yeah, there's not much going on. Sharknado premiered on
- 1:02:12Speaker 6: Sci Fi?
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: Was that twenty third with Shark Nado twenty thirteen? I
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: thought Shark Nado was like way before that.
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: So, according to this guy's ranking of his top movies
- 1:02:23Speaker 6: with twenty thirteen, number one is the Alexander Ozra movie
- 1:02:28Speaker 6: that most people forget even exist with Daniel Radcliffe called Horns.
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: Oh I hated that movie.
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: That was his number one. At number five, he has
- 1:02:39Speaker 6: Warm Bodies, and then number eight is Evil Dead.
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: Would you guys say this is out of like the
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: remake era? Do you guys consider this one of the
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: best ones that we got. I mean, I know I
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: mentioned Texas Chanceaw earlier, which I'd put up there, but.
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: I consider this the best, okay, because I think the
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: other ones are really like here's the saying some of
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: the remakes I really like. I think the hit Your
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: remake is massively underrated from from two thousand and seven,
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: Mate Bush, Yes, Dave Meyers directed. I think probably but
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: close second to Evil Dead. I would say it's Texas
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: Jainsaw Massacre, but I would say probably the most gruesome
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: of any of the remakes. Besides this, I would go
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: with the Hills Have Eyes I remake. I would say
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: that remake is just as like ooh, like you got
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: to turn away and.
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: It's just like dude, I don't think I And it's
- 1:03:47Speaker 6: the it's this like the lightest effect in that movie.
- 1:03:50Speaker 6: There's a moment during the fight between and I forget
- 1:03:53Speaker 6: his name, the lead and Jupiter when Jupiter throws the
- 1:03:58Speaker 6: act down and it cuts off like three of his
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: fingers at the knuckle and everything that happens in that movie,
- 1:04:05Speaker 6: that effect is what like.
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: Oh you wait, can I add one thing? I know
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: this isn't a discussion necessarily about burn but the one
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: scene where the chick had her fingers, yeah.
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: I was thinking that when he said that, yeah.
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: Fingers in the door and it's just a clean cut.
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: I was like, and then they drop one by one.
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: It's like, I'm like, is this supposed to be funny?
- 1:04:34Speaker 6: Let's see. So I want to bring up real quick
- 1:04:39Speaker 6: something that I saw when I was kind of doing
- 1:04:41Speaker 6: research for this. According to Reddit, which is, you know,
- 1:04:47Speaker 6: the the number one place for true accurate information on
- 1:04:51Speaker 6: the Internet.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: It's Wipedia.
- 1:04:54Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:04:57Speaker 6: Some people debate that this is not a remake, that
- 1:05:00Speaker 6: it's a sequel, and some people debate that it's a
- 1:05:03Speaker 6: it's a reboot. Do you guys have any solid take
- 1:05:06Speaker 6: on this? Because the sequel theory argues that because the
- 1:05:11Speaker 6: Oldsmobile is there and because the original necronomicon is there,
- 1:05:19Speaker 6: it's a sequel.
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: I always felt like it was like more of a reboot.
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: I feel like a it feels more like a reboot
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: to me, just because of the same things that happen.
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: It's still got the same you know, the it's it's
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: still got the same kind of trope from the first one.
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: It feels like a reboot. Than a like a proper
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: remake than a continuation. But I understand the argument, Like
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: I totally offend the argument. But to me, that's like
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: saying the rock of the James Bond movie. And here's
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: the reasons why. You know, Sean Connery's in the movie.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: You know he's James Bond. He worked for the British, Like,
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: there are things you can tie in, Like I feel
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: with this all it's all homage. It's like what Stephen
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: was saying earlier, the Michigan T shirt that's an homage.
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: Isn't the car in everything?
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: The Caryah same?
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: Ramie is in every thing everything, I think, even movies
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: he produces. But isn't it in all the Evil deads too?
- 1:06:22Speaker 6: Well, it's in It's in Spider Man, It's in Dark Man,
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: It's it's even in For the Love of the Game
- 1:06:28Speaker 6: at one.
- 1:06:29Speaker 5: Point Sound the Green Goblin gets around.
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: Doctor Strange too. Yeah, it is very prominent in Doctor
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: Strange too. But I'm talking about the Evil Dead movies.
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: Isn't it in Like is it in Rise? I don't
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: remember if we see it in Rise?
- 1:06:45Speaker 7: Oh I don't, I don't know.
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: I can't seeing it either.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: Let's see now that it was in Burn, but I
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: don't remember.
- 1:06:55Speaker 7: It is not.
- 1:06:57Speaker 6: And if she says that, yeah, it broke a long
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: standing tradition.
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: Maybe that's the missing ingredient to these movies.
- 1:07:04Speaker 6: Apparently, according to what I'm reading, the yellow chainsaw is
- 1:07:08Speaker 6: a hidden tribute because it's the same color.
- 1:07:10Speaker 7: As Ash's car.
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: Okay, let's see, let's see if.
- 1:07:18Speaker 6: It's in I don't remember it being in Burn. Oh
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: it is, Let's see, it's in it now. The car
- 1:07:27Speaker 6: in Evil, the Ash's car is in a family photo
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: that gets shown at the end of the movie.
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: Am I crazy? Or was there one scene where there's
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: pictures on the wall? Was there a picture Bruce Campbell
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: on the wall at the funeral home? No, it was
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: in the house somewhere.
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: I remember, I revisited.
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: I asked my brother that. I was like, is that
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: supposed to be Bruce Campbell?
- 1:07:56Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: I mean when it comes to remake, the remake conversation
- 1:07:59Speaker 6: is tough, right because there's like I will always argue
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: that John Carpenter's The Thing is the greatest remake of
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: all time, you know, like that's but people forget that
- 1:08:14Speaker 6: that's a remake. They don't realize it's a remakecause.
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: It's so far removed.
- 1:08:20Speaker 7: Yeah, it's in the eighties.
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: And it was one movie. Like Evil Dead had three
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: movies over two decades, the early eighties, Evil Dead two
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: with what eighty seven, eighty eight like something like that,
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: so like late eighties, and then Army of Darkness was nineties,
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: so you got two generations of Army at Dark of
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: Evil Dead before we get to the remake, the thing
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: was like thirty years, you know. That was like the
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: early fifties when The Thing from Another World came out,
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: and then John Carpenters came out in the early eighties.
- 1:08:54Speaker 6: Well, then you have The Fly. You're the four David Corners,
- 1:08:58Speaker 6: David Cronenberg's The Fly is a remake. Obviously these fifties
- 1:09:01Speaker 6: Fly So there's a lot of.
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: They have a whole third I don't know if y'all
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: know this series, but there's like a whole thirty year
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: nostalgia thing with generations like that's why, like in the
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: eighties we got a lot of fifties stuff. We got
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: a lot of fifties remakes in the early eighties, Back
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: to the Future, went back to the fifties. It's like
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: a thirty year gap and then with the whole eighties
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: boom from just a few years ago. I remember with
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: Stranger Things and everything seemed to be like in the eighties,
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: like that was like the cool thing. It was, that
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: thirty year gap.
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: That's interesting because I feel like the nineties.
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: Are yeah, the nineteen decade, Yeah, the nineties are coming
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: up too.
- 1:09:41Speaker 7: Well.
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: There's because I'm just kind of looking at some some
- 1:09:46Speaker 6: lists and trying to kind of see kind of like
- 1:09:50Speaker 6: what some people think. And there's even like Nosvaratu has
- 1:09:54Speaker 6: been remade a couple of times, and people people put
- 1:09:57Speaker 6: those in lists. Cat People was remade.
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: It's it's so hard for me to take the new
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: nos Ratu as seriously as I want to, because it
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: just feels so much like and I love Robert Eggers,
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: I do. It just feels like it's taking too much
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: from Bram Stoker's Dracula, which to me, did it better.
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:10:19Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, well, I think it depends because this
- 1:10:23Speaker 6: list that I'm looking at, does nosrat To de Vampire
- 1:10:25Speaker 6: from nineteen seventy.
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: Nine, And then you had to when when was the
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: first nosrat To? Is that the twenties?
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, twenty or early thirties. Yeah, I believe it's
- 1:10:39Speaker 6: the twenties.
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: So, and that wasn't even an American film.
- 1:10:42Speaker 7: That was a German film German yep, yep, yep, nineteen twenty.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: Two, early early twenties. So that makes a lot more
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: sense to remake. But what do you let me ask
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: you this going back to thirteen, what do you guys
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: think about the artwork? I think twenty thirteen that's the
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: best artwork and visual style. Like this poster alone of
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: her just walking is one of the most iconic things.
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: And y'ell noticed the homage and burn when the when
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: the girlfriend walks up and she's got the boots and
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: it's that low shot of her feet.
- 1:11:18Speaker 6: That's why I use this poster for our poster for
- 1:11:20Speaker 6: this episode, because I just fucking love and even the
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: artwork that does the most terrifying film you've ever seen ever.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: I'd all love that, even the d I don't know
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: if you like the DVD or the four K menu
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: on the shot factory four K or the white white Yeah,
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: who sitting. I'm like, that's so good. And I think Evil,
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: I mean Evil did Ride has the worst with I
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: mean they cut off half her head that's like the worst.
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: No, I like it, not that one.
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: I really like it, but they don't.
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: But brow, how would you know that? How would you
- 1:11:53Speaker 6: know if it was a four K alter HD, if
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: they didn't put it twice on the top.
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: You wouldn't was the problem.
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: But I do like the artwork for Burn. My only
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: issue is the poster is the exact same poster as infested.
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: He literally used the same post twice without these posters.
- 1:12:15Speaker 7: Yeah, but there's.
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: Something about Burn. I don't know if y'all noticed it.
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: Maybe I was in the theater and it was just like,
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: you know, your big the big screen. But I know
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: it was shot digitally, but it felt like it had
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: a film it grain to it, a filter, like a
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: filter or something to make it feel more like filmy,
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: especially the ending, like that scene when she's running away
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: in the red in that in that silhouette shot with
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: the red I'm like, this just feels like film, Like
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: I can see the grain though that was a cool
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: I feel like the color like that's what I'm saying,
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: Like the color finally came back. Ugliest House in the World.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: It's just gray palette and uh it's again and it's
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: like it's red and it's everything's on fire, and I'm like,
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: that's that is one of the coolest shots for running.
- 1:13:06Speaker 5: Yeah, the house and the parents had a very resident
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: resident evil fields. I don't know what it was, but.
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: Dead. Yeah, I've heard that. I've watched people's review and
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: they compare the scene with the dad to like Evil
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: Dead seven, I mean or something. Yeah, I said to
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: the games.
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: But I said to my wife it looked like the
- 1:13:29Speaker 6: movie looks like Thirty Days of Night. That that's a
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: great It's like that David Slade color palette.
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like almost like colors. I miss colors in film,
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: and I think Burn, I mean Rise for all his fault.
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: I feel like how to I like the color palette.
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: It's a little dark, but I don't mind the color
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: palette as much. Twenty thirteen that's the best one, obviously.
- 1:13:55Speaker 5: Oh easily.
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: This four K of Evil Dead twenty thirteen is a
- 1:13:58Speaker 6: fucking banger, Dude.
- 1:13:59Speaker 7: It looks so goddamn good.
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: Like, do y'all want to watch it again? Yeah?
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: Y'all prefer No, that was probably a stupid question, but
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: do y'all prefer the theatrical or unrated or does it
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: do you just instantly go, oh, it's unrated, I'm just
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: gonna watch the unerrated.
- 1:14:15Speaker 7: Yeah, I just watched the unrated unerrated.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: I didn't know this until about a week ago when
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: I when I went to go see burn, I marathoned
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: twenty thirteen and Rise, and I never noticed that the
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: end credit, the mid credit scene or in credit scene
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: was different.
- 1:14:37Speaker 6: Yeah, in the in the unrated cut, it's a different
- 1:14:39Speaker 6: mid credit scene.
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: Because I know, I don't think I ever watched that
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: for I'd always watch it because I think I had
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: the I think I had the unrated on Blu Ray.
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: I'm not. I don't really remember, but they did.
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: Two different releases for that on the Blu Ray. They
- 1:14:50Speaker 6: were two different the regular the regular Studio Blu Ray
- 1:14:54Speaker 6: was theatrical, and then later on they did an unrated
- 1:14:57Speaker 6: separate release. Because I had both of them at one.
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: Point that might have been. So when I got this,
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: you know, I watched it and I was like, I
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: didn't watch the credit. If I've seen it in theaters,
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: I had it on Blu Ray. So when the credits
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: come up, I'm ready to switch to the next movie.
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: But I look at Play, I'm like waits an there's
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: a credit scene of her like and somebody picks her up.
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: I thought it was gonna be Bruce Campbell. I was
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: hoping it was what it was, Yeah, because the only
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: one I remember from the theater was the groovy at
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: the very end. Yeah.
- 1:15:28Speaker 6: I love going back real quick to the marketing. I
- 1:15:32Speaker 6: just fucking love this, Like I think The Exorcist, the
- 1:15:38Speaker 6: marketing they lean to of the most terrifying film you've
- 1:15:42Speaker 6: ever seen, even when they did the unrated or the
- 1:15:45Speaker 6: directors the extended cut of The Exorcist and they did
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: the version you've never seen before. I think it's genius marketing.
- 1:15:53Speaker 6: And my favorite marketing of all time is from Wes
- 1:15:57Speaker 6: Craven's Last House on the Left. Just to avoid fainting,
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: please remember it's only.
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:16:05Speaker 6: If there's something about that style of marketing I love.
- 1:16:08Speaker 6: And uh, the Evil Dead poster with the the most
- 1:16:11Speaker 6: terrifying film you've ever seen is so classic in my opinion,
- 1:16:17Speaker 6: and it just looks great to strust centering it on poster.
- 1:16:21Speaker 7: The font I.
- 1:16:22Speaker 6: Think it was it was either Cold of Colt or
- 1:16:27Speaker 6: Cavity Colors. That a T shirt where that was the
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: back of the shirt. The most terrifying film you've ever
- 1:16:32Speaker 6: seen in that block lettering, and I missed it.
- 1:16:34Speaker 7: I just love that style so much, and.
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: The marketing for this was really good, and going back,
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: I forgot about that remake. Last House on the Left
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: is one of my favorite remakes too.
- 1:16:45Speaker 6: Yeah, it's actually a remake.
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: I don't like.
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: I like it, but I won't get the four K
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: because I prefer the unrated one and it's only on
- 1:16:53Speaker 3: Blue ray, so I'm just gonna keep my Blue Ray. Yeah.
- 1:16:56Speaker 6: In my opinion, the Last House on the Left remake
- 1:17:00Speaker 6: does what I what people think the original one like.
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: People have a negative connotation with the original because they
- 1:17:11Speaker 6: just remember that it's a rape revenge movie. But it's
- 1:17:15Speaker 6: not as mean as the The remake of Last House
- 1:17:18Speaker 6: on the Left, to me, is just meaner mean.
- 1:17:20Speaker 9: So the I'm talking about India, I'll talk about India
- 1:17:26Speaker 9: assault in the in the assault sequence, I think last
- 1:17:29Speaker 9: I think the remake is just mean, whereas the original
- 1:17:33Speaker 9: tries to.
- 1:17:36Speaker 7: I don't know in a way.
- 1:17:37Speaker 6: I don't I don't know how to put it in
- 1:17:39Speaker 6: a words without watching both of them real quick.
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: But my only problem with that one is tying back
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: the evil Dead It's one of the reasons why watching
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: the original Evil Dead one doesn't mean as much to me,
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: because I just I don't like that low budget seventies
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: early eighties student film style. Just it feels like I'm
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: watching a student film, Like because this was Sam Raimi's
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: first movie, very low budget. He like got a bunch
- 1:18:07Speaker 3: of dentists or something to help fund it. In that,
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: I think, what wasn't The Last House on the Left
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: Wes Craven's first movie, And I can't remember if you
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: was in college when you made it, but it was
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: very first you watched it. It feels very low budget to me,
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: and it's just it's not something I want to watch.
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: Just like I like, I can watch it and respect
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: it for where they became, like Seeing the Roots, but
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: it's not something I'm like, oh, yeah, let's just watch
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: this for fun.
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: You gotta be in the right mood for it.
- 1:18:35Speaker 6: You really do, got to, absolutely, But I will tell
- 1:18:38Speaker 6: you guys, like I have been in the last I've
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: always been in the seventies low budget, but in the
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: last couple of months, I've been watching a lot more
- 1:18:49Speaker 6: of what Steven Thurwer calls like independent exploitation films. Which
- 1:18:53Speaker 6: most of them are into seventies and not barely a
- 1:18:57Speaker 6: budget on some of these movies. And I've actually kind
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: of like that used to be a slight complaint of mine,
- 1:19:03Speaker 6: was just the visual aesthetic and the sound of these
- 1:19:06Speaker 6: movies because through a modern lens, they are a little
- 1:19:09Speaker 6: tough to look at and to deal with. But I've
- 1:19:13Speaker 6: been watching so many of these kind of like low
- 1:19:15Speaker 6: budget seventies like and now I love it. I kind
- 1:19:20Speaker 6: of got used to it. I'm like, oh, this is
- 1:19:21Speaker 6: actually like I kind of prefer this now, like looking
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: at digital versus that, I kind of lean more towards
- 1:19:26Speaker 6: like I love that style. Like I don't know, maybe
- 1:19:29Speaker 6: it's just mileage. The more you watch it, the more
- 1:19:31Speaker 6: you'll get.
- 1:19:32Speaker 5: I think they hold up better just in general. Yeah,
- 1:19:36Speaker 5: are some of these with the more recent ones.
- 1:19:38Speaker 6: And they well, I also just think that most digital
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: filmmaking looks like shit, Like I think I wish I
- 1:19:49Speaker 6: wish studios forced films of a certain caliber to shoot
- 1:19:53Speaker 6: on film, because there is still a prestigious style to
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: film that only film can capture. And I don't care
- 1:20:00Speaker 6: how hard you try, making digital look like film does
- 1:20:04Speaker 6: not work.
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: You see through it going to that point. To me,
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: I one thousand percent agree with you. But I think
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: it goes deeper than that. I don't think it's a
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: film versus digital argument. I think it's a lighting has
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: changed so much. Yeah, ok years where people don't use
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: heart light anymore. Everything is led soft box. You know,
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: we can do whatever we want right now. We're back
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: Then it was lighting had a purpose and a meaning
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: to it, and color design, set design had meaning to it.
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: Where now it's like it doesn't feel like it's like
- 1:20:46Speaker 3: imagine if Evil dead Burn had like even like one
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: of the girls had like this color on her she
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: had this yellow or this red that just popped and
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: it made her character stand out and that was her
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: character trait. But there's none of that in any of
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: these modern movies because they don't. I don't they look like, yes,
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: they'll like talk about, oh, the set design is really good,
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: but I'm like, there's no color palette to this. It's
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: just like, you know, I feel like back in the
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: day when you watch movies and you're like things had intent.
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: What they wore had intent. They put these colors together
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: for a reason. But that also goes back to film
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: because film captured color differently, but like you look at Suspiria,
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: look at the original Suspiria, and then look at the remake. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: complete opposite in every way.
- 1:21:41Speaker 7: Well, I think.
- 1:21:46Speaker 6: Intentional light is where I see the biggest difference, because
- 1:21:50Speaker 6: now everything just feels like there's a giant light box
- 1:21:52Speaker 6: over the set. It's this nice. Even everything's lit nice.
- 1:21:56Speaker 6: You could turn the camera in any direction and the
- 1:21:58Speaker 6: lighting will continue, right, which is why I respect Eggers
- 1:22:03Speaker 6: so much, because every light source feels intentional to the
- 1:22:09Speaker 6: visual of the film, where like in Nosferatu, they literally
- 1:22:14Speaker 6: use candle lighting to shoot the interior sequences because they're like,
- 1:22:20Speaker 6: there was no fluorescent bulbs back then, so we shot
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: on candlelight, and they made that work. They found the
- 1:22:27Speaker 6: way to make that work. When I saw the Werewolf
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: trailer in front of Evil Dead Burn, I was astonished
- 1:22:35Speaker 6: at the lighting. I'm like, this looks like it doesn't
- 1:22:39Speaker 6: even like the contrast is so natural because of the
- 1:22:42Speaker 6: lighting style. You don't have to go in in posts
- 1:22:44Speaker 6: and up the contrast because you're naturally creating such a
- 1:22:48Speaker 6: great separation between those highlights and your color source and
- 1:22:51Speaker 6: your darks, and it just looks so fucking good, where
- 1:22:55Speaker 6: like somebody actually sat there and was like with a
- 1:22:58Speaker 6: light meter and was like, okay, we can control how
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: what you know, how hot, how warm these lights are
- 1:23:06Speaker 6: gonna be, how they're gonna bounce off the highlights, how
- 1:23:07Speaker 6: they're gonna affect the skin, Like it feels like those
- 1:23:10Speaker 6: conversations are happening, whereas modern a lot of modern day
- 1:23:13Speaker 6: movies it just feels like it's blanket for every situation.
- 1:23:18Speaker 7: It's just there.
- 1:23:19Speaker 6: It's magical, magical lighting, ye evil Dad, twenty thirteen. The
- 1:23:25Speaker 6: moment that stands out for me in regard to this
- 1:23:28Speaker 6: topic is when the girlfriend goes in, when she goes
- 1:23:32Speaker 6: into the basement, h when Mia Head confronts around the
- 1:23:36Speaker 6: steps and the only light you have is the light
- 1:23:39Speaker 6: that's coming from the upstairs of the cabin through the
- 1:23:42Speaker 6: slit the gap in the door, and it's really fucking dark,
- 1:23:48Speaker 6: and that lighting bleeding in looks so good and it
- 1:23:52Speaker 6: plays into the tension and into the scares, Like I
- 1:23:56Speaker 6: love that so much.
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: Even the scene like and they're outside when you very
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: first see Mia and she's sitting on the car and
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: it's backwards the sun and you got the rays coming
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: in you know and stuff like that, and even just
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: one of my favorite shots and it's all soft lighting,
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: but it's how it's I guess, color corrected and everything
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: is when Mia is running away and she first sees
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: Evil Mia like looking at her and all this, you know,
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: the stuff starts coming out of the vines start coming
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: out of her like that shot and Mea is wrapped
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: in the little circles of vines. I'm like the composition,
- 1:24:36Speaker 3: the framing of just like she's sent her frame, but
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: you have all this other stuff around her where it
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: doesn't have to be this super chaotic handheld like, it's
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: just it's composed. I feel like Evil DI twenty thirteen
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: had the most composed shots. Mia sitting there on the
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: car is just you could take a picture of poster.
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: I feel like most in this movie you can just
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: take a shot and make a poster out of it.
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: Even for her entrance or for you know, that opening
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: shot where we're introduced to her, I feel like it's
- 1:25:08Speaker 5: like the perfect opening for a character. This is our introduction.
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: We obviously know that she comes with some sort of backstory,
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: but it's just the way it's like, uh set up,
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: just it's I don't know it. Just the attention to
- 1:25:22Speaker 5: detail I think is incredible.
- 1:25:24Speaker 6: It's like a modern hero shot.
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: Really is, you guys, low angle and I never even
- 1:25:29Speaker 3: put this together, so we're talking about that now. But
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: like she's sitting on Ashes' car like she is the
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: action of this story. You know.
- 1:25:38Speaker 6: Also, I love and I thought of this right away
- 1:25:41Speaker 6: because you guys know my photography style. I love how
- 1:25:45Speaker 6: everything with the Necronomicon looks like it could be a
- 1:25:48Speaker 6: Flatley photo. Like there's a moment when they bring the
- 1:25:52Speaker 6: Necronomicon upstairs and it's on a table. To the left
- 1:25:56Speaker 6: is a tray with the two bullets on it. To
- 1:25:58Speaker 6: the right corner of it is the sho shotgun that's opened,
- 1:26:01Speaker 6: so it angles it stuff around and then the shells
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: are around.
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: It like perfectly. Yeah, it's perfectly like everything is in
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: its place.
- 1:26:09Speaker 6: Yeah, and it doesn't it Never once watching it before
- 1:26:13Speaker 6: did it stand out as like too neat for me,
- 1:26:16Speaker 6: But now when I watch it, like knowing, I'm like, oh,
- 1:26:20Speaker 6: that looks like it's just very well composed, Like there's
- 1:26:23Speaker 6: such intention here of what he wants to show you,
- 1:26:27Speaker 6: and it just just it's just a pan out. They
- 1:26:28Speaker 6: do it's just a zoom out essentially on that table,
- 1:26:31Speaker 6: and I'm like, that looks like a fucking flat leg.
- 1:26:33Speaker 6: I'll that I'll post on Instagram later, you know what
- 1:26:35Speaker 6: I mean?
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: Something else I thought was really interesting too. Did y'all
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: listen to the commentary on this movie?
- 1:26:43Speaker 7: Not yet?
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: The director He talked, okay, so you know that icon
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: for me is iconic. The opening shot of the mood, like,
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: once we get to the story, it's an upside down
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: drone shot, the.
- 1:26:54Speaker 6: One where there's like a mess up at the beginning
- 1:26:56Speaker 6: of it.
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's like a yeah that always.
- 1:26:59Speaker 7: As a wobble.
- 1:27:00Speaker 6: It starts it literally starts in its flat and then
- 1:27:02Speaker 6: it goes like that. It goes like this real quick.
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: It readjusts a little dimbog. He did that in post.
- 1:27:09Speaker 3: That wasn't intentional.
- 1:27:12Speaker 7: Oh like, they just inverted it.
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: They they they flipped it in post. And his reason
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: was he which I think is reaching a little too much.
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: I think he just thought it looked cooler, which he says,
- 1:27:23Speaker 3: but he was. He compared it to Evil Dead is
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: it one or two? Where Ash turns around and there
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: an upside down shot and oh yeah, And he was
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: like he thought that was the coolest thing, and it
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: was kind of like an homage to that. But yeah,
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: he that wasn't intentional he did that in post.
- 1:27:40Speaker 6: That was just was it evil?
- 1:27:43Speaker 7: That did this movie start?
- 1:27:44Speaker 6: The trend of the drone shots over the thing? Where
- 1:27:49Speaker 6: did this? Where did that start?
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: That's been a thing for That's like in every trailer.
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: Every trailer starts off with a drone shot with somebody
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: traveling somewhere.
- 1:28:00Speaker 5: Do they have that Midsummer But I don't.
- 1:28:03Speaker 7: Did Midsommer have that shot?
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: No, Midsommar had the they were driving? What did a
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: drone shot? Because I remember it kind of did.
- 1:28:12Speaker 5: Like a yeah, it was.
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: It was a little different of a camera move, but.
- 1:28:16Speaker 6: Yeah, because I think of I always think of the
- 1:28:19Speaker 6: shining with the helicopter shots where it's flying over. But
- 1:28:24Speaker 6: every movie, every modern like mid budget horror movie I've seen,
- 1:28:29Speaker 6: I feel like in the last twenty years, there's an
- 1:28:32Speaker 6: upside down shot of it of like a drone over
- 1:28:37Speaker 6: a landscape.
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: I will give it this twenty thirteen to me feels
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: like the last time they really utilize the famous Sam Raimi,
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: like I call it the cable cam shot.
- 1:28:49Speaker 6: Oh, when they took the two four by or the
- 1:28:51Speaker 6: two two by four's and put the camera.
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: On yeah, where they're actually running, because now we have drones,
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: so you don't need to like Evil did Burn. All
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: those shots were drone shots. You could help me with
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: dru shots. Even in Rise, it subverts your expectations because
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: it's a drone shot and he catches the drone.
- 1:29:07Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's.
- 1:29:09Speaker 3: You know, but Evil Dead twenty thirteen, it was like, yeah,
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: they're actually running through the wood. They built a thing
- 1:29:16Speaker 3: to do that shot. They actually had a cable cam
- 1:29:19Speaker 3: system to do that. It was more analogue, I would say,
- 1:29:24Speaker 3: in its filmmaking techniques, and I think it just looks
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: better and they utilized it better. They used it very sparingly.
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: And Burn and I don't remember it as much and
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: only like maybe two or three times, and Rise fairly.
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: But you it's in a more confined space, so I
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: guess you can't really you know, down the hallway if
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: the only part imber.
- 1:29:46Speaker 6: Can we go back to foggy environments?
- 1:29:49Speaker 7: Please?
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: Oh God?
- 1:29:50Speaker 5: Like I'm all for that.
- 1:29:53Speaker 6: Like the I dude, and I just fucking love when
- 1:29:58Speaker 6: when movies establish a location after an action occurs. When
- 1:30:02Speaker 6: she when Mia crashes the car in the water. She
- 1:30:06Speaker 6: crashes into it. We don't see the full location, and
- 1:30:09Speaker 6: then we do cut to the location. It's like that
- 1:30:11Speaker 6: wide and it's just like all fog and it's what
- 1:30:16Speaker 6: like the highlights are very bright and it just establishes
- 1:30:19Speaker 6: like it feels otherworldly, like she's crashed somewhere else.
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: Yeah, it's atmosphere. And I feel like even Burnt, I
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: don't think Rise had any atmosphere like that at all.
- 1:30:30Speaker 3: It didn't have the setting to do that. But Burn
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: only does that at the very end, at the very end,
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: it does it, and only sparingly when she's running through
- 1:30:40Speaker 3: the woods that famous shot with the red in the
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: background and then a few shots of her running through
- 1:30:45Speaker 3: the woods. Yeah, but the only time we see that, oh,
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: in the snow. I did love when the snow started
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: and it would like slow mow and it was like
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: it felt like sicker snow. I love when they use atmosphere. Yeah,
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: So that's why my favorite scene in twenty thirteen is
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: rain seeing the body that it just adds that texture
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: to it. My favorite parts and Burn were when they
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: did the snow. They just added that atmosphere. I don't
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: remember Rise having any of that, dude.
- 1:31:12Speaker 6: The Blood Rain is incredible and the music, like the
- 1:31:17Speaker 6: use of choir in the score when when Abominable begins
- 1:31:21Speaker 6: climbing out of the ground into the blood rain is.
- 1:31:25Speaker 7: It's pure evil.
- 1:31:26Speaker 6: It's just there's a satanic style to it that.
- 1:31:31Speaker 7: I love so much.
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: Would you guys consider I would assume. But do you
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: guys consider this one of the standout moments in the
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: film or are there are other ones that come close
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: to this?
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: This is yeah, this is the moment for me. Anytime
- 1:31:46Speaker 3: I see that, I'm like, that's it's one of the
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: best visuals in horror in cinema to me, and horror
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: cinema is that shot with her outside and it's it's
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: a wide shot perfectly framed with them entered in her
- 1:32:01Speaker 3: cutting her up.
- 1:32:01Speaker 7: It's just yep.
- 1:32:03Speaker 6: So that shot is good top three all time for me.
- 1:32:08Speaker 6: And it's because of the composition, but it's also because
- 1:32:11Speaker 6: the camera's moving.
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: You start to crazy.
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: The camera cranes down and begins to kind of tilt
- 1:32:18Speaker 6: up to create that final frame of her sling her
- 1:32:22Speaker 6: and half in front of the fire, and it is
- 1:32:25Speaker 6: it's it's a photo. It's it's it's remarkable. How good
- 1:32:30Speaker 6: that that shot is, dude, that is incredible. And just
- 1:32:34Speaker 6: anytime you can paint like red is so tricky because
- 1:32:39Speaker 6: if we know from I mean Steve, you and I
- 1:32:42Speaker 6: especially getting into shallows and all that, we know how
- 1:32:45Speaker 6: how much blood affects the color of the blood affects
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: the impact of it. And what I like about this
- 1:32:51Speaker 6: movie is they use different types, different style or different
- 1:32:54Speaker 6: colors of blood. Like in the moment when when he's
- 1:32:57Speaker 6: patching up Eric's chest wound, the blood is actually very
- 1:33:00Speaker 6: bright that's pumping out of his wound, and then it
- 1:33:03Speaker 6: dries very dark, as real blood would, and then the
- 1:33:06Speaker 6: rain is darker, but it still creates a red contrast.
- 1:33:11Speaker 6: So it's very smart their use of picking the color
- 1:33:15Speaker 6: to make it work in the scene for the visual palette.
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: And that felt the little homage too. I can't remember
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: which one it was, but I think it was the
- 1:33:22Speaker 3: second one. Remember when ashes in the Yeah, it's the
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: second one where ashes in the shed and the blood
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: splats on the on the light bulb and now everything. Oh,
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: it's the red lighting, and it gave it an excuse
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: for there to be red light in that scene where
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: this is the same it's red blood, so of course
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: the lighting is you have an excuse for the lighting
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: to be red.
- 1:33:43Speaker 7: Well, they do it.
- 1:33:44Speaker 6: They do that in this when he's cutting up his girlfriend.
- 1:33:47Speaker 6: When David's cutting up his girlfriend in the shed with
- 1:33:49Speaker 6: the chainsaw, the blood prays on the on the light
- 1:33:53Speaker 6: and then the camera pans out and the inside of
- 1:33:55Speaker 6: the shed is red.
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: I totally forgot about that. You're yeah, yeah, they do
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: that right.
- 1:34:01Speaker 6: It's good man, It's so good.
- 1:34:03Speaker 7: It's very very good. Just absolute banger.
- 1:34:09Speaker 6: Have a flick in my opinion, any before we before
- 1:34:12Speaker 6: we begin to wrap up, any any other thoughts, anybody
- 1:34:15Speaker 6: wants to squeeze in about twenty thirteen's Evil Dead.
- 1:34:19Speaker 5: I wish it would bring me a back.
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: I feel like this movie broke her, Like JANEA. Levy.
- 1:34:23Speaker 3: I literally feel like this movie broke her because if
- 1:34:27Speaker 3: you see the behind the scenes, like she went through
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: it to like just to get into character and the
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: stuff she had to do, like well she did.
- 1:34:36Speaker 6: Don't breathe after this, I forget one.
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, which I have a really really great follow
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: up to this. I feel like Betty hasn't really had
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: that since this. I don't really care for Romulus, But
- 1:34:51Speaker 3: visually it's a really good It's visually good.
- 1:34:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I gotta give it a rewatch. It's I haven't
- 1:34:59Speaker 5: seen it since it came out, but.
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I wish they would. I wish you would come back.
- 1:35:07Speaker 3: I wish they would find a way to bring her back.
- 1:35:10Speaker 6: It's I feel like I've seen comments of people saying,
- 1:35:16Speaker 6: with these Evil Dead sequels, to bring back, you know,
- 1:35:20Speaker 6: for Deay Alvarez. But I don't think that's gonna make
- 1:35:23Speaker 6: anything better. I think movies like this are a time
- 1:35:27Speaker 6: they work because of the time that they're made, with
- 1:35:30Speaker 6: the intentions at the time that they're made. Like we've
- 1:35:32Speaker 6: seen filmmaker's return to franchises and they just cannot do
- 1:35:37Speaker 6: what they've done before the return, or they returned to
- 1:35:40Speaker 6: genres and they can't. Horror directors left horror come back
- 1:35:44Speaker 6: to horror and they just can't do what they did.
- 1:35:46Speaker 6: You know, you capture lightning in a bottle, and you
- 1:35:49Speaker 6: can't do that again.
- 1:35:52Speaker 3: And I also like that each movie has a different
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: director with a different style. I kind of like that feeling.
- 1:35:59Speaker 3: It's even rat have a different director.
- 1:36:01Speaker 6: Francis Gloopy, Yeah, a friend of our podcast network.
- 1:36:06Speaker 3: And I would take the only issue. As I said
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: at the beginning of this, my only issue with Berne
- 1:36:11Speaker 3: is it feels like a really good French horror film
- 1:36:14Speaker 3: that they just shoved Evil Dead into it.
- 1:36:18Speaker 6: To wrap up, If you guys could pick one director
- 1:36:23Speaker 6: m working today to tackle an Evil Dead project in
- 1:36:27Speaker 6: their style, meaning they're guaranteed freedom to do it their way, why.
- 1:36:33Speaker 7: Would it be Ty West?
- 1:36:35Speaker 6: That's what I want to That's that's mine.
- 1:36:39Speaker 7: I think ty West is the perfect pick.
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: Honestly, I would not picky West.
- 1:36:44Speaker 5: Brian. Who would you pick? Because I know who.
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: I'm thinking about that Brian Obama, that would be getting up.
- 1:36:55Speaker 3: I'm kind of somebody who doesn't do horror very often
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: that I just but I'm I'm more into style for stuff,
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: and I'm as much as I have issues with Burn,
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: with the style of the how it was shot at
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: the beginning, I respect this director of Sebastian is that
- 1:37:13Speaker 3: or that is a Sebastian. I love how he feels
- 1:37:18Speaker 3: like he has his own style to he brought something new.
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: I want to say Alexander Aja, but old Alexander Asha,
- 1:37:29Speaker 3: I don't know about modern Alexander like I feel like
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: he would but maybe his style would be too similar
- 1:37:35Speaker 3: to Sebastian, because I feel like Sebastian takes a lot
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: of influence from him in a way.
- 1:37:42Speaker 6: Yeah, ALEXANDROA yeah, I mean high tension.
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: And even like his I mean Pirana three D.
- 1:37:56Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: Oh did he do mirrors too? Mirrors? I just remember
- 1:38:01Speaker 3: that shot of Amy Smart in the tub Ooh yeah, which.
- 1:38:08Speaker 6: Is another great example of practical combined with CG because.
- 1:38:11Speaker 7: That was a real jaw that Yes, yeah, yeah, Steve,
- 1:38:15Speaker 7: What about.
- 1:38:15Speaker 5: You for the director choice? Yeah, I think I would
- 1:38:20Speaker 5: have to This is kind of out of left field,
- 1:38:22Speaker 5: but I think I would go with Pianos Cosmatos, Oh,
- 1:38:25Speaker 5: Mandy and Beyond the Black Greenbow. I know he would
- 1:38:28Speaker 5: probably be like less on the comedy side of it,
- 1:38:31Speaker 5: but I'm thinking to myself, like Mandy, you know, just
- 1:38:34Speaker 5: kind of that esthetic kind of I feel like that
- 1:38:37Speaker 5: was the first choice I thought of when we talked
- 1:38:39Speaker 5: about twenty thirteen's Evil Dead, the Red and the Black
- 1:38:43Speaker 5: contrasts to one another. I feel like he would he
- 1:38:46Speaker 5: would dial up the violence to like twelve.
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: I take it back, I have somebody know who could
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: you just go Nicholas win in.
- 1:38:54Speaker 7: Reference, Oh my god, can you imagine.
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: I could actually, could you imagine that it would be
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: the best looking one. It would probably be the only
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: pink cooking evil.
- 1:39:06Speaker 5: We listen whatever. I'm down for it, man, because I
- 1:39:09Speaker 5: feel like he would be uh he has an eye
- 1:39:11Speaker 5: for that.
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: Eventually, Like have you ever seen Only God Forgives?
- 1:39:15Speaker 7: Yeah? Yeah, yeah that.
- 1:39:19Speaker 6: I feel like we all picked directors were like, only
- 1:39:22Speaker 6: a fourth, only a quarter of the movie would actually
- 1:39:25Speaker 6: be Evil Dead.
- 1:39:26Speaker 7: The rest of it.
- 1:39:27Speaker 5: Was just like, you know, it's the name attached, that's it.
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, they haven't had one where it's like the
- 1:39:34Speaker 3: the director is the highlight of it, like Betty blew
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: up because he did like a short like a side
- 1:39:42Speaker 3: on YouTube. I don't know what Lee Cronin did before.
- 1:39:47Speaker 6: He did a movie called The Hole in the Ground.
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: Okay, I've heard of that movie. Is that the one
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: with the little kid the posters like the two kids
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: looking in the little square? Yeah, I haven't seen that one. Well,
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: he's big enough now to where I mean Lee Cronin's
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: the Mummy.
- 1:40:04Speaker 6: Yeah, well, I think you know one of the over
- 1:40:08Speaker 6: the years that this that the Evil Dead franchise has
- 1:40:11Speaker 6: been growing. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have been very
- 1:40:15Speaker 6: you know, like out about how they're they want to
- 1:40:18Speaker 6: give young directors or like new directors a chance like
- 1:40:21Speaker 6: a stab at like play in our sandbox, and you know,
- 1:40:25Speaker 6: to to kind of like close this out. I think
- 1:40:28Speaker 6: people get really upset at at these continued franchises, and
- 1:40:32Speaker 6: I understand that like A twenty four now owns Friday
- 1:40:36Speaker 6: the Thirteenth and they own the Texas Chainsaw Masker.
- 1:40:40Speaker 7: I don't want more of either of them, but.
- 1:40:46Speaker 6: Like Paramount attaining the rights to Nightmare in Umstreet, I
- 1:40:51Speaker 6: don't like, right big studio. A twenty four is a
- 1:40:54Speaker 6: big studio. But at least Curry Barker getting a chance
- 1:40:57Speaker 6: to do Texas Chainslaw Masker is interesting. It like young
- 1:41:01Speaker 6: director with an interesting vision that's gonna try to do
- 1:41:06Speaker 6: something new, hopefully like because Curry Barker would never if
- 1:41:10Speaker 6: Texas Chancelscer was owned by New Line still, they would
- 1:41:13Speaker 6: never let Curry Barker touch the ship, you know what
- 1:41:16Speaker 6: I mean. So at least, if we're gonna get more
- 1:41:20Speaker 6: movies from these franchises that we love, at least give
- 1:41:23Speaker 6: me interesting takes out them from interesting directors, interesting filmmakers.
- 1:41:30Speaker 6: That's what I'm scared of with Paramount. I feel like
- 1:41:32Speaker 6: Lee Cronin's gonna do Night Right straight.
- 1:41:34Speaker 7: I'm being honest with.
- 1:41:35Speaker 5: You, dude, Please I will. I'm gonna throw in the towel. Then.
- 1:41:41Speaker 5: If that's the case, Holmes Street, my god, Lee Cronin
- 1:41:46Speaker 5: as Freddy Krueger, I'm done. I'm out.
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: How would y'all feel? And I'm saying it's gonna twenty
- 1:41:54Speaker 3: I'm thinking it's because it's twenty twenty six and we
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: haven't actually got this yet. But if you could pick
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: a female director to do an evil dead movie, mm.
- 1:42:06Speaker 6: Hmm, bring Rachel to Delay the back from Night Renown
- 1:42:10Speaker 6: three five or Night Renotry or Freddy's Dead.
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: I was I was thinking Coray, the chick who did
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: Revenge in the Substance Yo.
- 1:42:25Speaker 7: Yeah, I would also. I would also go with.
- 1:42:32Speaker 6: And I always butcher her last name, So I'm probably
- 1:42:35Speaker 6: gonna get it wrong.
- 1:42:35Speaker 7: Is it Jane Shoenburn.
- 1:42:38Speaker 6: Who did I saw the TV glow We're All Going
- 1:42:40Speaker 6: to the World's Fair Affair, and she directed that upcoming
- 1:42:44Speaker 6: Love and Death, Love and Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.
- 1:42:48Speaker 7: What is that movie?
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: Oh?
- 1:42:50Speaker 3: Is that the one with what's your Name?
- 1:42:51Speaker 5: In it.
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: The chick from The X Files. Julian Anderson.
- 1:42:56Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yes, Gillian Anderson.
- 1:42:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:42:58Speaker 6: Oh, it's called t Age, Sex and Death. It can't
- 1:43:01Speaker 6: be Asthma.
- 1:43:02Speaker 3: That's a crazy name. That's a crazy name. I haven't.
- 1:43:07Speaker 3: I couldn't get into the TV Glow movie. I tried.
- 1:43:12Speaker 3: I really wanted to like the aesthetics, but I just
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: couldn't get into it.
- 1:43:15Speaker 6: Hold up, I got it. Give it the fucking Rose Glass,
- 1:43:19Speaker 6: director of Saint Maude and Love Life Bleeding.
- 1:43:24Speaker 3: Okay, okay.
- 1:43:26Speaker 7: Rose Glass has a great visual.
- 1:43:29Speaker 3: Yeah style, Now that I'm thinking about it, my choice
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: would have been it would have been like that. It's
- 1:43:34Speaker 3: probably gonna be the cleanest looking dead movie. If Coralie
- 1:43:37Speaker 3: does it. Oh yeah, oh yeah, no, that's a good choice. Rod. Yeah, Stylistically,
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: I think she could.
- 1:43:46Speaker 5: I was looking at is it? Julia de Corna from
- 1:43:51Speaker 5: U director who did raw in Titan.
- 1:43:54Speaker 3: She was almost on my thing, but Titane was too
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: much for me.
- 1:43:58Speaker 5: You're not you're not down with.
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: The I saw Titan in a movie theater.
- 1:44:02Speaker 5: I did two. I have no shame.
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: Oh oh my god.
- 1:44:10Speaker 5: I went by myself on that one.
- 1:44:11Speaker 6: I was probably for the bus you're by yourself.
- 1:44:16Speaker 3: That's one of those things where I had to look around.
- 1:44:18Speaker 3: I'm like, are these people saying what I'm saying?
- 1:44:22Speaker 6: When I saw and this will be my last thing,
- 1:44:24Speaker 6: when I saw the substance, When my wife and I
- 1:44:26Speaker 6: went and saw that I was, we were surrounded by
- 1:44:29Speaker 6: the most diverse group of people, like you would have
- 1:44:32Speaker 6: thought this was like a social experiment. It was me
- 1:44:35Speaker 6: and my wife, you know, young thirties. To the right
- 1:44:38Speaker 6: of me was an older black couple, and then to
- 1:44:41Speaker 6: the left of us was like college frat kids. And
- 1:44:45Speaker 6: then in front of us was like a daughter or
- 1:44:48Speaker 6: a guy and his like teenage daughter. I was like,
- 1:44:51Speaker 6: this is the most eclectic group of people. And the
- 1:44:54Speaker 6: movie theater we saw it in was Cinemak, and they
- 1:44:57Speaker 6: put us in like the small movie theater because I
- 1:45:00Speaker 6: guess they didn't expect, you know, to sell a lot
- 1:45:02Speaker 6: of tickets. So there was like sixteen people in this
- 1:45:06Speaker 6: theater that was packed. And then there was one guy,
- 1:45:09Speaker 6: one guy sitting in the handicapped like the eight like
- 1:45:13Speaker 6: the what's that the companion seating like all the way
- 1:45:16Speaker 6: into back and I didn't even know. I went to
- 1:45:19Speaker 6: the bathroom at one point and he was there. And
- 1:45:21Speaker 6: then when the move was over, like the moment the
- 1:45:23Speaker 6: credits rolled, I got up and he was gone. So
- 1:45:26Speaker 6: I don't even know if that guy ever even existed.
- 1:45:30Speaker 5: Who was That's crazy?
- 1:45:33Speaker 6: So yeah, even the twenty thirteen is is very.
- 1:45:37Speaker 7: Very good. It's a banger, yes, certified certified banger.
- 1:45:41Speaker 6: One of the best remakes of all time in the
- 1:45:43Speaker 6: horror genre according to according to US. So thank you
- 1:45:48Speaker 6: guys for another incredible staff picks. I hope, I hope
- 1:45:52Speaker 6: the experience here at the cabin has n't been too
- 1:45:56Speaker 6: brutal on you. I know, we've had to fight off
- 1:45:57Speaker 6: dead heights and we found.
- 1:45:58Speaker 5: A book, take a shower.
- 1:46:01Speaker 3: I have a question about the book Realfath before we go, Yeah,
- 1:46:05Speaker 3: the first one. Isn't there three books?
- 1:46:08Speaker 6: There's a I believe if I remember correctly, there's supposed
- 1:46:10Speaker 6: to be like seven.
- 1:46:12Speaker 3: Okay, because I felt like it would have been could
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: I don't feel like they leaned too much into that
- 1:46:17Speaker 3: and burn Like twenty thirteen obviously had the book, and
- 1:46:25Speaker 3: then Riots had a different book obviously, but I feel
- 1:46:29Speaker 3: like they didn't really get into that, or they didn't
- 1:46:31Speaker 3: maybe explain it, or I didn't catch it and they're
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: around a book. But I mean, I don't know if
- 1:46:35Speaker 3: that's the same book or.
- 1:46:37Speaker 6: They were too focused on the wise men.
- 1:46:39Speaker 3: Yeah. I didn't like that.
- 1:46:41Speaker 6: If I could get a copy of any of these books,
- 1:46:43Speaker 6: it would be the twenty thirteen one where it says
- 1:46:45Speaker 6: burn the motherfucker.
- 1:46:47Speaker 3: Oh yeah, Well the thing with thirteen is what happens
- 1:46:52Speaker 3: in the book actually happens.
- 1:46:54Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: You know, we're in Burn the Dagger. For example, she's
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: we see this picture in the book and it's like
- 1:47:01Speaker 3: all these daggers and it reminds me like Constantine the
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: Spear of Destiny, you know, all these really cool daggers.
- 1:47:08Speaker 3: And it ends up being this little shank, this prison shank.
- 1:47:11Speaker 3: It's like this big and you're like, that's it, it's nothing.
- 1:47:14Speaker 5: I thought the same thing. I was like, that's that
- 1:47:18Speaker 5: doesn't seem right.
- 1:47:19Speaker 3: No, But I did like the moment. I will say,
- 1:47:23Speaker 3: I like the moment when she stabbed them with the
- 1:47:24Speaker 3: real knife. Yet you think it's gonna be in the
- 1:47:26Speaker 3: that I goes, that's not it or wrong one or something. Yeah,
- 1:47:30Speaker 3: I thought that was kind of cheeky. But yeah, the
- 1:47:33Speaker 3: knife was disappointing, and I'm like, we see it in
- 1:47:35Speaker 3: the book, and then you rewatch twenty thirteen and you're like,
- 1:47:39Speaker 3: everything in the book is what shown the girl burning,
- 1:47:42Speaker 3: that this happening to this person. It's foreshadowing everything that's
- 1:47:45Speaker 3: happening in the movie.
- 1:47:47Speaker 5: Yeah, and Jason goes to Hell Jason.
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: Yea.
- 1:47:50Speaker 6: If Jason goes to Hell, the yeah the Jason goes
- 1:47:53Speaker 6: the Hell is well because I guess they what they
- 1:47:56Speaker 6: claim that that that Jason's like a dead eye, right,
- 1:47:59Speaker 6: I guess it's what the conclusion comes down there, so.
- 1:48:01Speaker 5: That I see. I was thinking about it after we
- 1:48:03Speaker 5: did our Power rankings, and I feel like that that
- 1:48:07Speaker 5: maybe deserved a spot in our Power rankings.
- 1:48:10Speaker 6: I think, Steve, you need to do an official post
- 1:48:12Speaker 6: of your ranking and just put Jason Goes to Hell
- 1:48:14Speaker 6: in it and see if anybody says anything.
- 1:48:16Speaker 5: Listen, I'm not opposed to it. I think this is
- 1:48:19Speaker 5: my this is gonna be my controversy.
- 1:48:21Speaker 6: It's my time put Jason Goes an updated ranking and
- 1:48:25Speaker 6: I'll put Jason go to Hell in there.
- 1:48:29Speaker 3: I'm gonna die on this phill.
- 1:48:30Speaker 5: You guys, you know what this is a.
- 1:48:34Speaker 6: I don't know what kind of book you found in
- 1:48:36Speaker 6: the basement because I also found a book found in
- 1:48:39Speaker 6: barbed wire and human flesh, and I was really scared
- 1:48:43Speaker 6: to open it when you guys were out collecting wood
- 1:48:45Speaker 6: for the fire. But I opened it and it was
- 1:48:46Speaker 6: just a copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
- 1:48:50Speaker 6: So I don't know what.
- 1:48:51Speaker 7: That was about.
- 1:48:52Speaker 6: But I'm not even going to touch that. Well, guys,

- 1:51:16Speaker 7: Yeah, you're right there.
- 1:51:18Speaker 5: One hundred degrees. It lived last night. Listen, last thing
- 1:51:22Speaker 5: I'll say. Last night, I'm getting ready to go see
- 1:51:24Speaker 5: Evil dead Burn. It literally looks like a scene out
- 1:51:27Speaker 5: of Blade Runner. It's all orange outside. It smelled like
- 1:51:33Speaker 5: not campfire in a good way. And I made my
- 1:51:38Speaker 5: way out to go see Evil dead Burn, and it
- 1:51:40Speaker 5: felt probably the most appropriate setting that I could be
- 1:51:44Speaker 5: seen this movie in.
- 1:51:45Speaker 6: I am bro watching Evil dead Burn while real life
- 1:51:47Speaker 6: burning is pretty you know, pretty good. I think that's yeah, Yeah,
