- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's get right into it. Say I'm tired of waiting
- 0:02Speaker 1: for you.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I'm bad, I'm new sorry. Sean Means is here from
- 0:08Speaker 2: the Salid Tribune and he's one of the invisible hands
- 0:13Speaker 2: behind the paper.
- 0:14Speaker 1: But see his hands, they're right there. But he's also
- 0:19Speaker 1: a film critic.
- 0:20Speaker 2: You can go to movie cricket dot net for all
- 0:22Speaker 2: of his stuff and sltrib dot com for the rest.
- 0:25Speaker 1: What have we got?
- 0:27Speaker 3: We got fourth four movies to talk about. I don't
- 0:30Speaker 3: have a lot to say about Karate Kid Legends, Karate Kid,
- 0:34Speaker 3: Karate Kid. It's this is It's ninety four minutes and
- 0:37Speaker 3: it's boring. It's like what Shakespeare once said is tedious brief.
- 0:44Speaker 3: This is a legacy sequel. It's trying to tie up
- 0:46Speaker 3: some of the loose ends by tying together the two.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Branches of the franchise.
- 0:50Speaker 3: You've got Daniel LaRusso, the original hero of the first
- 0:53Speaker 3: two movies, played by Rath Macchio. And you've got mister Hahn,
- 0:56Speaker 3: who's the kung fu teacher played by Jackie Chan in
- 0:58Speaker 3: the in the last movie when when when it was
- 1:01Speaker 3: the Karate Kid, but they were doing kung fu and
- 1:03Speaker 3: not karate I mean.
- 1:04Speaker 1: This could have been a good they could have done.
- 1:07Speaker 3: You've got You've got one of mister Hans's best students,
- 1:10Speaker 3: Lee Fong uh young actor named Ben Wong. He's actually
- 1:13Speaker 3: he's actually pretty cool. He moves to New York with
- 1:16Speaker 3: his mom, who's a doctor played by Mg nah Win
- 1:19Speaker 3: Her love her.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Uh mom.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Mom tells Lee no fighting for reasons. There's that we
- 1:24Speaker 3: get into later. Uh. But Lee encounters some bullies and
- 1:27Speaker 3: he figured the bullies. The bullies are the biggest bully
- 1:31Speaker 3: is like the champion of the of the New York
- 1:34Speaker 3: five Burroughs uh karate contest. And the second you hear
- 1:39Speaker 3: that mentioned, it's like, well, we know where this movie
- 1:41Speaker 3: is gonna wind up at the end.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:44Speaker 3: But he's been training kung fu, so he has to
- 1:46Speaker 3: learn karate and that's when Lee bring you know, Lee called.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Lee calls mister Han, and mister Han calls Daniel and yeah,
- 1:53Speaker 3: uh yeah, heavens it's boring. Uh, it's all the storylines
- 1:58Speaker 3: are ridiculous and predictable, and the only good part art
- 2:00Speaker 3: is that is watching Macio and Chance sort of go
- 2:02Speaker 3: back and forth as their training. Yeah, they're they're they're
- 2:06Speaker 3: they're kind of fun. But you wish there was more
- 2:07Speaker 3: of that. Of the two of them. You don't actually
- 2:09Speaker 3: get Macio into the movie until about fifty minutes in.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Wow, all right, two stars legends.
- 2:16Speaker 2: You got Jackie Channon. You wasted him.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Yeah, he's not he's not doing full speed, you know,
- 2:22Speaker 3: stuff like anymore.
- 2:23Speaker 1: He can be very charming, all right. Yeah. Next, Jane
- 2:26Speaker 1: Austin Wrecked My Life. Yes, that's that's actually the title.
- 2:30Speaker 3: This is a this is a charming little romantic comedy
- 2:32Speaker 3: that's actually French. It's it's it's split between France and England.
- 2:36Speaker 3: It's about half in French, half in English. We have
- 2:38Speaker 3: Agatha who is a writer who's stuck in her writing
- 2:41Speaker 3: in her life. She works in Paris in a bookstore,
- 2:44Speaker 3: the only famous bookstore you know in Paris because you've
- 2:47Speaker 3: seen it in other movies like Before It's where Ethan
- 2:49Speaker 3: Hawk did his book reading and Before Sunset.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and a friend possible boyfriend who works there.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Send some of her writing to the Austin Residency, which
- 2:58Speaker 3: is a two week writers or tree in England, to
- 3:01Speaker 3: where you go and write and soak up the atmosphere
- 3:05Speaker 3: where Jane Austen used to be and stuff and so
- 3:07Speaker 3: she's scared her doing it, but she goes anyway, and
- 3:09Speaker 3: the first person she encounters is Oliver, who is the
- 3:12Speaker 3: son of the people running the residency.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Is he cute, He's very cute. He's cute.
- 3:17Speaker 3: He's the great he's the great, great great grand nephew
- 3:20Speaker 3: of Jane Austen, and he's a literature professor and he
- 3:23Speaker 3: doesn't like Jane Austen. So so Agatha takes an instant
- 3:27Speaker 3: dislike to him. And if you know Jane Austen, you
- 3:29Speaker 3: know that's how pride and Prejudice starts. That's the prejudice.
- 3:35Speaker 3: So we know where this movie is going, but how
- 3:37Speaker 3: it gets there is really the fun part, because this
- 3:39Speaker 3: woman who plays Agatha is really funny, really trying. My
- 3:41Speaker 3: name is Camille Rutherford. And it's not just about the romance.
- 3:45Speaker 3: It's also about the fear of writer's block and the
- 3:47Speaker 3: idea of facing a blank page in writing, as in life,
- 3:52Speaker 3: is you know, always a challenge for people.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Three stars for Jane Austin Wrecked My Life.
- 3:57Speaker 3: It's over the Broadway, all right, bring her, bringing her back.
- 4:01Speaker 1: This is a horror movie.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Yeah, this is This is the Philippoo Brothers who did
- 4:06Speaker 3: talk to me, which was that creepy one last year
- 4:08Speaker 3: about the hand. Yeah, you shook the hand and it
- 4:10Speaker 3: took you to the dark, to the other side, and
- 4:11Speaker 3: it still creeps me out. They seem to like the
- 4:16Speaker 3: other side, the dark side, the veil between this world,
- 4:21Speaker 3: the and the next world.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Uh.
- 4:22Speaker 3: We've got a brother and sister who have to go
- 4:24Speaker 3: into foster care when their stepdad suddenly dies, and they're
- 4:28Speaker 3: staying with Laura, who's foster mom, who seems really nice,
- 4:32Speaker 3: really fun, but there's something a little bit weird going on.
- 4:36Speaker 3: And maybe it's the other kid who's staying with him,
- 4:38Speaker 3: who seems who's mute and seems almost like he's possessed
- 4:41Speaker 3: or something.
- 4:41Speaker 1: He's just really creeping up. Okay.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Sally Hawkins who we love from like Shape of Water
- 4:49Speaker 3: and Yeah, the first two Paddington movies, she plays the
- 4:53Speaker 3: foster mom.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Oh okay, and that's why you want to see this movie.
- 4:56Speaker 3: She she really Oh right, I can't I really can't
- 5:01Speaker 3: say a lot because it's no spoilers here. It's really
- 5:04Speaker 3: well done. It will scare the living crap out of you.
- 5:07Speaker 3: And Sally Hawkins is really good, really unsettling. Three and
- 5:10Speaker 3: a half to bring her back if you Yeah, Katie's
- 5:13Speaker 3: going to.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Eat this up. Yeah, you're gonna like this one. And
- 5:17Speaker 1: that's playing all over them.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Okay, So now you're moving on to television what Yeah,
- 5:20Speaker 2: go on.
- 5:21Speaker 3: I'm working Bill Bill Frost, Side of the Street from Anywhere, Mountainhead.
- 5:26Speaker 1: This is play opening.
- 5:27Speaker 3: It starts tomorrow night, Saturday night on HBO and then
- 5:30Speaker 3: we'll be streaming on Max, HBO, Max, whatever they're calling.
- 5:33Speaker 1: It this week.
- 5:35Speaker 3: This this was filmed up in you up in Park
- 5:37Speaker 3: City on a very quick schedule. This is the first
- 5:41Speaker 3: project of Jesse Armstrong, the guy, the guy who created Succession.
- 5:45Speaker 3: This is the first project he's done since Succession is over. Okay,
- 5:48Speaker 3: and it's his first feature for feature film.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Oh, this is a film. This is in a series.
- 5:52Speaker 3: In the series, this is just two hours and two
- 5:54Speaker 3: hours and You're done right. And he wrote and directed
- 5:57Speaker 3: and he wrote it in January. They film in March
- 6:00Speaker 3: and it's out on HBO tomorrow, which tomorrow just happens
- 6:05Speaker 3: to be the deadline for Emmy consideration.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Every last second this is this is like when you
- 6:11Speaker 1: open a movie on Christmas to get to the Oscars.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Yeah, this is yeah, can you does it feel like
- 6:16Speaker 4: it was rushed, It feels urgent, it feels like you
- 6:20Speaker 4: needed to do it quickly because it's dealing with stuff
- 6:23Speaker 4: that is very here.
- 6:24Speaker 1: And now, Okay, you have Jason Schwartzman.
- 6:26Speaker 3: He's a rich tech bro who has a mansion on
- 6:28Speaker 3: a mountain side and he invites three of his even
- 6:31Speaker 3: richer friends for a poker weekend, played by Steve Corral,
- 6:35Speaker 3: romy Yusef and Rommy Usseif if you remember from Poor Things,
- 6:38Speaker 3: and Corey Michael Smith and you'll recognize him. He played
- 6:41Speaker 3: Chevy Chase in the Saturday Night movie that was terrific.
- 6:45Speaker 4: So was this like if like Elon and Jeff Bezos
- 6:48Speaker 4: and Mark zucker.
- 6:49Speaker 3: B I mean you can start picking up, you know,
- 6:54Speaker 3: the Correl is sort of the the elder statesman of
- 6:56Speaker 3: the Budge.
- 6:57Speaker 1: So he's maybe the Gates or.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Whatever, and and uh, chry megel Smith is his character
- 7:03Speaker 3: is very definitely it's supposed to be Elon. But but
- 7:06Speaker 3: but in the same way that Brian Cox is Rupert Burdock. Right,
- 7:10Speaker 3: It's like you start that you start there as a
- 7:12Speaker 3: sort of a sort of a character point jumping off point,
- 7:16Speaker 3: and then you build from there. Okay, and so yeah,
- 7:22Speaker 3: Cory's character world rich, World's riches. Guys, he just added
- 7:25Speaker 3: some tools to his massive online platform that's definitely not
- 7:29Speaker 3: x uh. And it looks like those tools are adding
- 7:32Speaker 3: to the disinformation and deep fakes out there, and they're
- 7:36Speaker 3: causing riots and unrest all over the world. And so
- 7:39Speaker 3: they're they're these guys are in this mansion and they're
- 7:42Speaker 3: looking on their phones and the world is blowing up
- 7:45Speaker 3: all on their phones, and we get we we start
- 7:48Speaker 3: with denial like this isn't our fault to bargaining pretty
- 7:52Speaker 3: fast as they go from they start figuring out how
- 7:54Speaker 3: they can work this to their advantage. And it gets
- 7:57Speaker 3: and then the spoilers will get into the rest of it,
- 8:00Speaker 3: but it gets crazier from there.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yeah, the.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Great performance is strong story. And the mansion it's it
- 8:08Speaker 3: overlooks jordan'elle reservoir. It listed last year for sixty five
- 8:11Speaker 3: million dollars. And it's the cliche they say the house
- 8:14Speaker 3: is a character, but it really kind of is.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Three and a half stars.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Oh okay, And it's on anything said HBO tomorrow night,
- 8:23Speaker 3: and they want streaming on HBO Max.
- 8:28Speaker 1: And if you go to sl trip dot com, I
- 8:31Speaker 1: interviewed all.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Four of those actors, very nice and we talk and
- 8:35Speaker 3: we talked a lot about the house. I was also
- 8:38Speaker 3: eyeing you for the review on this because my brother
- 8:40Speaker 3: was a PA on this. And if you see Tucker
- 8:43Speaker 3: Davis in the credits, for me a photo of that
- 8:45Speaker 3: so I can give it to my mom. Okay, all
- 8:49Speaker 3: get on HBO tomorrow night and you can do it
- 8:50Speaker 3: yourself three and a half for three and a half
- 8:52Speaker 3: of that.
- 8:52Speaker 1: So next week the Phoenicians scheme.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Phoenician scheme, New Wes Anderson movie with Benicio del Toro
- 8:58Speaker 3: and Mia Threppleton.
- 9:00Speaker 1: You don't know, but you do kind of do because
- 9:02Speaker 1: she is the daughter of Kate Winslet. Does she look
- 9:04Speaker 1: like Kate Winslet a bit? She definitely acts like that.
- 9:07Speaker 3: We also get to Ballerina Ballerina, which is the sort
- 9:10Speaker 3: of spin off from the John Wick World with anadamas
- 9:14Speaker 3: and Life of Chuck. Life of Chuck, which I'm hearing
- 9:16Speaker 3: good things. Yes, they they're being kg about showing it
- 9:19Speaker 3: to us, but we're going to get there.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Okay, Well, thank you very much.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Seawan me sl trip dot com or movie cricket dot net.
- 9:27Speaker 4: I just reposted your review of that, Sean on Twitter
- 9:31Speaker 4: if somebody wants to look at that
