- speaker-0: Welcome to speaker-2: The Just Us Sisters podcast. Come with a manual. So we made a podcast. speaker-0: Doesn't speaker-3: Welcome to Just Us Sisters. Today we're talking about our childhood friendships. I'm gonna introduce each sister and they're gonna introduce their childhood friend. We're gonna start with Susan, sister number one. speaker-0: Hey, my high school friend was Rose Pinkunas Tabor. speaker-3: All right. And I'm Cheryl and I'm number two. And my high school friend is Rayanne Dixon Devonville. Shelley is sister number three. speaker-4: My friend from Wayback is Lisa Crook Cottle. speaker-3: And Stacy, our little baby, is ⁓ number four. speaker-5: And my friend is Carrie La Fuente Keeper. All right. speaker-2: Go way back. speaker-3: Way way back. Okay, what do you think made your friendship work the most? Well speaker-4: For me, it was just a lasting bond. I mean when you think we left following my seventh grade year and we didn't even get to spend those real like high school to me was, you know, real bonding time for you guys. And I live three hours away and so we didn't even have that and yet we've stayed in touch. across the years. And I think it's just a bond that was made early on that just never went away. speaker-6: Would agree a hundred percent. speaker-5: ⁓ with Carrie though is it it was just an instant bond. I think that there wasn't defining moment that said, Hey, you're gonna be my best friend. It was we just enjoyed being around each other and we did have the same what do you call speaker-1: Thanks. speaker-3: Yeah. ⁓ speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-4: You know, you know those things. speaker-1: amazing. speaker-5: And and and neither of us were big parties in high school and and if we went to a party we went together and we left, you know, together. We w had each other's back. Yeah. speaker-2: I would agree with that. I we were one grade level apart. So we had different sets of friends. And I had some great friends that I played basketball with and did sports with. But at the end of the day, they did not have the values, spiritual values that Stacy and I had. Like we grew up in church. That's our lifestyle. And so we had that spiritual bond that none of my other friends had. They believed in God and this, that, but they weren't growing in Christ like Stacy and I were pursuing the Lord. And so that made all the difference in the world and that's why it works so well for Stacy and I. And then the you know, any authentic friendships that I do have, it's because of that spiritual bond. speaker-5: Mm-hmm. And some of our best memories are probably Leander First Baptist Church and the things that we did there. Yep. speaker-0: Yeah. Well, yeah. And I think the same thing. Some of my best memories with Rose and and and Rayanne were through fellowship of Christian Athlete. And of course sports. I love in in that team, and I don't know how many girls were on the team, but there just didn't seem to be a competition between us or a jealousy or some of the things that you see in these girls these days that It they just feel like they have to show the other person up. Do you know what I mean? I love that we were just who we were with each other. No pretense, nothing about each I mean we we didn't have to wear makeup or we did wear makeup. It didn't matter. We all may have dressed differently. It it didn't matter. Those exterior things did not matter. What mattered was that I knew they cared about me and I hope they knew that I cared about them. And I think that the Lord was the center of it all. ⁓ even though sports brought us together, the Lord kept us together because basketball ended. But that relationship I remember when I had my first child and I don't know what for whatever reason golly, I I don't know why I'm getting emotional. But anyway, for whatever reason, Rose was one of the first people I wanted to call and tell. And when I called you to tell you that, because we had a child before we had an anniversary. 'Cause Caleb was born in June and my first anniversary was July. But it seemed like either you had just gotten engaged or I don't know what had happened, but I remember calling you and telling you about Caleb and then you telling me about the things going on in your life. And we had not spoken in week you know, this was back before cell phone days, y'all. I mean, you had to pick up the phone and note and and remember the number. Yeah. speaker-5: Mm. speaker-1: Great. speaker-5: For a long distance call. Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-8: Yeah. And you know, Susan, along with that, just kind of the four of us to talk about that for a minute. That was very, very special. I you know, there's I don't know that a lot of people have that experience and I'm not so sure that you know I really realized what that was like at the time, even though I knew we all had a really strong bond. And you know, I mean we had a good team and we won and all that. But it really that was just the bonus on top. The top part of it was the fact that Just like you said, I mean, we just all got along and all just really enjoyed ourselves. Mm-hmm. And then if I could add to Cheryl and I's relationship, for me, which, you know, I'm extremely grateful for that relationship, and extremely grateful that we bonded together and we were able to do so many things together. There's so many things that we haven't been able to talk about or I haven't, you know, I can't express everything. I can't remember it all. But what was special to me about Cheryl and I is I think we both have a very strong personality. And when you have a strong personality, a lot of times it doesn't mix. But we were able to be able to make that happen because I think we had a very similar zest for life and a zest for doing things. And as you guys know, Cheryl is always up for doing something. And I was right there behind her, always. I I just I wanted to do those things with her. And it just made our relationship, I think, flourish to the degree that it is even like, you know, we don't see each other that much anymore, but I still feel such a strong bond and such an important person in my life. speaker-6: This was speaker-3: Yeah. And sports brought us all together. We already know that, but we had the same friends. We had the same adventurous spirit. I don't know if I could have passed high school without her because I I mean, I was just not into studying. So she helped me quite a bit. And I think she tolerated me better than anybody. I think her parents probably said, Hey, we're friends with their parents. Try to get along with her But you know what I remember? I remember When we were sophomores, I don't know if I was her backup, but I I warmed the bench, but I just always remember hoping for the best for you 'cause I mean we were best friends, but I didn't like sit over there praying, Lord, help her get hurt so I can get in. No, I didn't have that attitude. And I just appreciate our friendship very much. speaker-8: Me too. The other thing I'd like to add is what I always kind of think is unique is I do feel like our fathers are very similar in their relationship of with each other that you and I are. They're always doing something to sometimes a little mischievous and always up for an adventure and I feel like they have kind of a a similar relationship that you and I do. speaker-3: What is one thing about your friend that you think has still hasn't changed? speaker-0: Think for me, mine is just her humor. She's always had just a very dry sense of humor. And and then I I feel like her love for people. Rose has always had a love for for all people. And then of course her love for the Lord. Still very, very strong. And that's encouraging to me to see that. speaker-7: Well, I was just gonna back up with Susan that that I feel the feel the same and it's just like when Susan called me to join y'all on this podcast, it's like we had been talking to each other like every day and we haven't talked and I don't even know how long. So it's just like we just phone whenever and it's like no time has passed. And you know, that's a that's a type of friendship that is very well, how's your mom? How's your dad? How's tall you know, and it's just like you pick up and it's just ⁓ Like I said, it's very rare. And so you have friends and then you have sisters. And so like Susan is my sister and I can just call her and I know she's there for me and I know she prays for me and like the like the first friends stick closer than a brother. speaker-6: Yes. I would say for Shelley and I, we just connected because we were coming back to Texas and we hadn't talked I hadn't seen you in quite some time, probably since mom's, and it was really cool because she was like, Yes, come on, come stay at the house, come see mom and dad. And it was just click, click, click. The stories, the talking, just it it was like you pick right back up from where you left off. So it was really cool. speaker-4: I would say that Lisa still has the same adventurous spirit that she had even as a little kid. And now I see that she is as protective of her own as I am. And so there's that kinship there and bond that hasn't ever left. speaker-6: No, Shelly's super mom. I will go off of what Stacey says all the time, mom, right? Very responsible, very on time, which I'm the exact same way, which is crazy. No, no, no. You were talking about remember we were trying to go to breakfast and all the we got you know, this is the time. We gotta pick this up. I'm I'm kind of the same way. Like I have a schedule, it's set, I follow she's the same way. It's it's crazy. Yeah. Wait, that's pretty identical. speaker-5: She's only like that for you, Lisa. She's not on time anywhere. So speaker-0: ⁓ good. speaker-6: She's not better. She was super organized. She organized dinner. We had breakfast that where we were going the next morning. It it she's I'm the exact same way. So it was it's kinda crazy how we're a lot alike. Yeah. speaker-8: Sha speaker-3: She's doing speaker-0: See, we're all not so it's nice to have her in the family. Yeah. speaker-5: That's true. She's our organizer for our trips and all of that. Yes. Mine for Carrie is just that her love for the Lord and for life in general. And we haven't always lived close together and even when we have, there have been long periods of time that we don't talk. But if I see her at church, if I go with mom and dad or at Jardines on a Thursday if I get to go, which has been years, but it's that we pick up right away. And the fact that now she's great friends with Sherlin Shelley. And so I get to watch that and still hear about all the fun that happens there. I feel like I miss out just a tad, but just the love that you have for the Lord. And you know, when John Two died, you were one of the first people to text me. And you know, that means a lot. Yeah. speaker-2: gonna that makes makes me emotional because I was gonna say that that what I wrote down for Stacy is loyalty. Because even though she has moved a lot, I think that's in last episode. So we haven't always been in close proximity to one another. But I know that in a heartbeat, like if I needed anything that I could call Stacy and that she would be there like that. Her and Casey. And I can say that about like I am with Shelley and Cheryl a lot more often. So all I feel the same for all of y'all, but I know, Stacy, that like your loyalty has always remained the same. And you reached out recently when you heard about something going on in our family with my brother and so that means a lot. And then I did add on to that your youthfulness 'cause you look amazing. And so I feel like you haven't changed through the years. You look the same. speaker-5: ⁓ thank you. speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-5: I know, Bestie. speaker-1: Hahaha speaker-5: We all need that person that tells us that. speaker-1: Hahaha. speaker-3: For me, Ray Ann is still as adventurous, if not more now than she ever was. I love that about her. And I would say also loyal because we can ⁓ just pick like what Rose said, we could not talk for a year and then if I see her, it's definitely pick right back up. So that's what I that's I'm sticking to that. speaker-8: feel very similar to Cheryl. I think I think I think you're still pretty adventurous as well. speaker-1: What? speaker-3: I just left when I'm doing my adventure now. speaker-8: So they're all always kept me on my toes, right? And now you guys know she keeps all of you guys on your toes still. So very very similar. You haven't changed a whole lot. I haven't. And like you said, I mean, I could call Cheryl for anything. And as you know, I experienced something pretty traumatic last year and all you guys were there for for me. Thank you so much. speaker-4: It's just so cool looking at these eight people here and it it's not just about the connection with who asked you to join us. 'Cause as I told you, Lisa and Stacy were in the gang together and Stacy and Carrie had Rose as a coach and Susan Sheryl, Rose and Raeanne were part of an incredible high school basketball team that went to state and you know, it just the connections don't stop with just the one on one and that's what I love about it. speaker-6: Yeah. speaker-5: Yeah. You're friends with us, you're friends with our whole family. ⁓ speaker-2: Amen. speaker-0: You speaker-3: Yeah. All right. The last thing I want to know is what do you think you should do together soon? speaker-7: Well probably get together. speaker-1: Hahaha speaker-8: I haven't played rainy basketball. speaker-0: C speaker-7: Wait, I'll be speaker-5: Yeah. speaker-6: I told Shelly, I'm retired now. Yeah, I can go play. speaker-4: They do have a Grandins League that we might be able to join. speaker-0: Yeah. Hey, they don't have enough braces for me. speaker-1: I'm a lab. speaker-0: But hip brace, knee brace, shoulder brace. speaker-2: Good news is you don't you're not allowed to run and you're not allowed to jump. So speaker-8: There you go. speaker-6: Anything but that. Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah. Okay. speaker-3: Rayanne, I think you and Mark should join the rest of us for that cruise for cruise sixty fifth birthday. You need to think about it. Okay. speaker-4: Yeah. speaker-3: Yeah. speaker-8: school is everybody's turning at sixty five and we're we're having a cruise to celebrate. I can't believe I said that. Sixty five. speaker-1: Crazy. speaker-4: Lisa did exactly what we needed to do. When she was coming through, she reached out and we were able to get together and reminisce and catch up and I am just grateful that that she was willing to do that because my parents got to talk to her. ⁓ I I they they're still talking about that visit. ⁓ and ⁓ it was just a precious time and I appreciate it. speaker-6: Yeah, it was perfect. Yeah. My husband has not stopped talking about your dad and Johnny and Andy. And they were talking guns in the kitchen. And he he was happy. Yeah. He just retired from the fire department after 35 years. And he is just he's loving just this to be able to go wherever we want to go. And it's it's it this was a perfect trip. And he just he's raved about y'all. So it's really cool. speaker-1: Yes. speaker-3: Mm. Tell Steve thank you for now Johnny wants one of those guns. And I'm like, let's stop. speaker-5: Yeah. speaker-6: ⁓ these boys and their guns. ⁓ my lord. speaker-3: This has been a great episode of ⁓ just bringing back memories of our childhood. speaker-4: been a part of this episode fourteen, the second part of childhood friendship. And we look forward to next week when Susan hosts episode fifteen dealing with grief and loss. Until then, life is messy, meaningful, and better when shared. Thanks for listening. speaker-0: Don't forget to like us. speaker-3: Share us. speaker-4: Comment speaker-5: Subscribe. speaker-0: Bye. Are you asking the friends or are you asking us? Whoops, she's frozen. Me? speaker-3: Well, speaker-4: ⁓ who wants to jump out there? speaker-5: Hold on. I need to redo Carrie and I's intro. 'Cause it was seventh and eighth grade. Okay. Okay. So let me that Okay. ⁓ speaker-4: Just start from there. speaker-3: Hang on, I gotta look cut this part out, Shelling. No problem. Okay. speaker-6: Yeah. speaker-0: Hold on, I need to turn on the light 'cause I'm getting into the dark now. speaker-3: ⁓ I I feel like we're leaving people out. Yeah. Make sure if you wanna talk, you gotta jump out there with this group. Yeah. speaker-6: Uh-huh. speaker-0: I was trying to do a mountain climber the other day on the floor and I was I was glad Shelly couldn't see me. We we do video workouts together through FaceTime and I'm on the ground trying to do a a mountain climber and I I would make ⁓ America's funniest videos if someone saw me. speaker-1: No. speaker-3: Okay, we're gonna start with number eight. speaker-5: That's better, though. I think when you're closer. speaker-0: Just put your mouth to the mic to the video, the camera. speaker-8: Yeah no. speaker-5: All right. speaker-3: Let's see if we can get this right. Until next week when we do part two of our childhood memories, remember life is meaningful, messy, and better when shared. speaker-4: Okay. Now say childhood friends and it's life is messy, meaningful, and better when shared. And this is in every single blooper we have because my sisters can never get this right. speaker-0: I know. speaker-2: Like you're still doing this? speaker-3: I know. Daisy told me the wrong thing. speaker-0: I mean, why are you listening to Stacy? speaker-4: You Stacey comes up with every ⁓ word that there is that in speaker-1: Bye! speaker-3: Okay, let me see. Okay, ready? Until next week when we do part two of childhood friendship. Let me do that again. speaker-1: Okay. speaker-4: Yeah, you're trying to be smart out there. Okay. speaker-3: Until next week. Okay. Until next week when we start our part two of whatever it is. All right, here we go. speaker-4: Okay. Now thank you for listening to part two and then and anticipate number fifteen where Susan will be talking will be talking about hosting grief and loss. speaker-3: I say that? Yeah. speaker-0: ⁓ no. speaker-3: So thank you for let me just go to this. Thank you for listening to ⁓ speaker-4: Exact same thing, but you're part two. Huh? speaker-3: What we are talking about. speaker-4: The second part of childhood friendship. Next year I mean next week will be Susan talking about grief and loss. Okay. Woo! Thank y'all. speaker-5: Hurry up, I gotta go to the bathroom. speaker-0: Yeah, yeah.
