- 0:07On November 12, 1967, the New York Giants faced the Chicago Bears at Wrigley Field in Chicago during week 9 of the 1967 NFL season.
- 0:17The Giants entered the game with a 4-4 record, and the Bears, led by coach George Hallis in his final season, took the field with a 3-5 record.
- 0:26This is the local Chicago radio broadcast featuring announcers Ken Hodge, Woody Erdman, and Dick Lynch.
- 0:56It's great travel value weekend on Minitiss.
- 1:00Each week throughout the professional football season, the New York Giants radio network and its affiliated stations bring you exciting National League football.
- 1:08The opening kickoff in today's game will be coming up in just a few moments.
- 1:15Here in Chicago, a crowd of about 45,000 is on hand here, 20 minutes prior to air time.
- 1:20In weather that's on the overcast sky and chilly, temperatures are in the low 40s. It's expected to go into the 20s before the end of this afternoon's game.
- 1:29The Giants enter this game all even on the season with four wins and four losses, while the Bears have won three and lost five.
- 1:36In a multi-bonding with former Giants defensive back Dick Lynch, about how coaches Ali Sherman and George Hallis might be calling their strategy.
- 1:44But right now for another look at today's game, let's call in our play-by-play reporter Woody Erdman.
- 1:50Thank you, Ted Hodge, and good afternoon everyone from Wrigley Field, Chicago, where this afternoon two football adventures will unfold for the more than 40,000 fans who are braving Chicago wins.
- 2:02The first of the two adventures is the New York Giants high-flying offense, which leads the league in total yardage against the Bears' efficient defense,
- 2:11which has made the most of individual skills and hustle and, of course, the artful design of coach Jim Dooley.
- 2:18The second adventure holds some fascinating possibilities too for quite another reason.
- 2:23It matches a rather stuttering Bear offense, which has shown signs of improvement but remains last in the league in yards gained,
- 2:30and a giant defense which has had more points scored against it than any other defense in the National Football League,
- 2:37but whose big problem appears now to be reduced to the defensive backfield.
- 2:41If, as they say, everything is relative, this could be quite a clash.
- 2:45Football, of course, travels in cycles.
- 2:48Last year the Chicago Bears suffered through a 5-7-2 season, while the New York Giants were winning only one game all season.
- 2:55The Bears had lost Andy Livingston and Johnny Morris for the season.
- 2:58The Giants had been forced to do without Tucker Fredrickson, and had encountered many, many injuries.
- 3:04The Giants turn up at Wrigley Field this afternoon for their first appearance here since 1963,
- 3:10when Y.A. Tittle tried his very best to bring off the victory in the face of a brilliant Bear defense.
- 3:16Dick Lynch was in that football game.
- 3:18And perhaps Dick can say it won't be too many years before it will be the Bears against the New York Giants again in another championship affair.
- 3:26All right, Woody Yertman, let's hope that happy day is not too far away.
- 3:31We'll be back to you very shortly when we get the opening kickoff in today's game.
- 3:35We'll have more on today's game in just 60 seconds.

- 4:34Field in Chicago, Ted Hodge along with Woody Erdman and Dick Lynch prior to the opening kickoff
- 4:39in this afternoon's national football league game between the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears.
- 4:45Well, Dick Lynch, before we get started talking about the background of this game
- 4:49and what both coaches George Hallis and Ali Sherman are going to be using strategy-wise,
- 4:54I think it's entirely after fall here where Woody and Dick to call attention to our fans.
- 4:59We are very soon going to reach a milestone in college football.
- 5:03One of the Chicago newspapers this morning carried an item to the effect that just 10 years ago,
- 5:08this coming Wednesday, Dick Lynch scored the only touchdown for Notre Dame in a great game against the University of Oklahoma.
- 5:16And Dick, by golly, I've got to say you look like you could go out and score that touchdown again tomorrow if you had to.
- 5:21Not exactly, Ted. I wish I could, though. I just CD a piece in the papers and it was very nice.
- 5:27Well, Dick, if the Giants are going to win this game this afternoon against the Bears,
- 5:31I think it's obvious to just about everybody they're going to have to stop Mr. Gail Fares,
- 5:36who has been variously termed a Kansas hurricane, a Kansas cyclone, a Chicago comet, and so forth.
- 5:42In your thinking, Dick, having played against the Bears and knowing the coaching strategy,
- 5:46how do you expect coaches Ali Sherman and Harlan Tavari, the defensive coach of the Giants, will accept a stop there?
- 5:53Well, it's a real fine question, of course, one that's definitely in front of the mind of the coaches on the Giants.
- 6:00However, I do think the Giants can isolate Fares, particularly where he is very dangerous,
- 6:06and that would be like, for instance, on the kickoff team where Gail Sayers has done so well.
- 6:12He scored two touchdowns on runbacks on kickoff, and he's really an exciting runner,
- 6:16and he's got the strength and the speed to go all the way on these kickoffs.
- 6:20But with Pete Gogolak kicking against Gail Sayers, Gail Sayers lines up on the right.
- 6:25Pete Gogolak has the ability to place the ball to the left side of the field in the left corner.
- 6:31Gail Sayers lines up on the left. Well, then Gogolak has the ability to kick the ball to the right.
- 6:37He can place the football anywhere on the field, and that's one great advantage.
- 6:41So that's how I think we're going to isolate him on the kickoff team.
- 6:45The hunting team is also very, very dangerous when he gets the football,
- 6:49but he can be isolated once again because Ernie Coy kicks the ball nice and high,
- 6:54and he also can kick it out of bounds, or he can place it himself.
- 6:58He has the ability to kick to the right, high and long, but to the right.
- 7:02He can tell his defenders, I'm going to kick it to the right now, boys.
- 7:05Let's go over there. Let's go get him. Oh, he can kick it to the left.
- 7:08He has that ability. So on our special teams, I think we can isolate Gail Sayers.
- 7:14What happens if they decide to switch at a time when Gogolak is making his approach to the ball?
- 7:23Well, then I think they're doing something that's different,
- 7:25and we're causing them to do something different, so I don't think that's going to affect it at all.
- 7:28Say it has to run from his right to his left, I think this is definitely in the favor of the Giants.
- 7:33He can also drop the football, too.
- 7:35Don't forget, it takes quite a long time to see the arc of the ball,
- 7:38see where it's going to fall, and try to get there in time, then to set up where you're blocking.
- 7:43But Gogolak also can place that ball very quickly to the right corner or to the left corner,
- 7:48and I think, believe me, I think he can keep the ball away from Sayers.
- 7:53Dick, getting over to the Chicago Bears, I noticed that they're using Jack Con Cannon,
- 7:58a former Boston College star quarterback, as their number one quarterback this year.
- 8:03Now, when Jack Con Cannon was signed to professional football by the Philadelphia Eagles,
- 8:08he was, of course, their number two quarterback,
- 8:10and the Bears have had an established quarterback in Rudy Bukic.
- 8:14But now Con Cannon has been moved in by Coach George Callis ahead of Bukic,
- 8:18and I'm wondering why this is, Dick.
- 8:20Well, the number one reason, Woody, I think, George Callis and the Chicago Bears
- 8:26and football in general, coaches, they do believe that Jack Con Cannon can be a fine quarterback.
- 8:32This is his first year starting at quarterback, and this has caused, he's under an awful lot of pressure.
- 8:38He is young, he's 24 years old, this is like his first year starting at quarterback,
- 8:44and they want to go with the young quarterback.
- 8:47Bukic has been in the league about 13 years. I played with Rudy down in Washington.
- 8:51He's got a fine arm. I do think at times he is a little erratic,
- 8:55and their offense in the beginning was fluttering, and as Woody pointed out, it hasn't been consistent.
- 9:01They have scored 101 points, that's second lowest in the league.
- 9:05The Atlanta Falcons have scored 96 points. So they don't have much of an offense.
- 9:10But so I think he's going to turn the reins completely over to Jack Con Cannon and build him up.
- 9:15It takes a lot of experience, it takes playing time, and they want to go with Con Cannon.
- 9:20I don't think he's much of a faster. In fact, he's somewhat like Tarkington in that he does do a lot of scrambling.
- 9:26The figures here, he ran the ball 48 times, and Tarkington has only ran it 33 times.
- 9:32So when he goes back to throw the ball, he is also, he has the ability, he's 6'3 and weighs about 205 pounds,
- 9:37he has the ability to scramble. He also runs 199.
- 9:41He's going to be a scrambler, just like Tarkington. He gained 176 yards on his 48 attempts.
- 9:46That's not an awful lot, but he does have the ability to scramble.
- 9:50Tarkington ran it 33 times for 214 yards.
- 9:54And we saw it last week as he scrambled and really led us to some real fine game.
- 9:59But overall though, that's the reason why I think they want to start Con Cannon,
- 10:03and why they want to keep him in the ball game, make him the number one quarterback, give him the experience,
- 10:07because he has the future ahead of him. His future is sort of like behind him.
- 10:12So I would say youth movement on the part of Chicago Bears by one of the senior citizens and senior statesmen,
- 10:19elder statesmen in the National Football League, the veteran coach George Hallis,
- 10:23going as Dick Link mentioned, with youth in quarterback with Jack Con Cannon, the former Boston College star.
- 10:29We had the pleasure of seeing him in all three of his college games against Syracuse University,
- 10:34the all three games he appeared in against Syracuse University over many of these state stations.
- 10:39And Con Cannon was a fine college quarterback and has come along well here with the Chicago Bears.
- 10:45We'll have more on today's game in just 60 seconds.

- 12:30Here at Wrigley Field in Chicago, we're just moments away from the opening kickoff in this afternoon's NFL football game
- 12:35between the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants. Well, Dicklin, a few moments ago,
- 12:40we were chatting about the strategy which the Giants would have to use to stop Gale Sayers and the Chicago Bears.
- 12:46Let's look at the other side of the coin now, Dick, and what will the Bears have to do to stop the Giants?
- 12:51Well, I think the Bears know what they have to do really, Ted.
- 12:56Let's take first Coach George Callis. He founded the ball club in 1920 and he's been a head coach for 40 of those years, since 1920.
- 13:08He's been a head coach 40 years. He knows and understands football. He knows what he has to do.
- 13:12What they have to do, and it's real important, the Giants come in here as the number one offensive ball club in the league.
- 13:17They have to stop our passing attack. And if they ignore that, we're having such a fine year, right?
- 13:23I think if Ernie Coy, by the way, who didn't practice all week, he didn't run until Friday,
- 13:28but he's going to be able to start the football game, he's all right.
- 13:32Ernie Coy and Tucker Fredrickson, they're having a great year running. Both of them are blocking very well and they're running very well.
- 13:39And I think we can run against the Chicago Bears defense. And I believe very strongly that we can pass.
- 13:45And as they line up two men on Homer Jones has been the custom so far in the games that we've seen and we've recorded here,
- 13:53we have Aaron Thomas. And Aaron Thomas has done very well against the Chicago Bears.
- 13:57He's done very well against Richie Pettibone, who is a real fine safety.
- 14:01And they're going to have a battle. It's going to be quite a battle, Pettibone against Aaron Thomas.
- 14:06And also, of course, Homer Jones, he'll give anybody trouble. He'll give McRae trouble. He'll give Gentry trouble.
- 14:12And you never can tell when Homer's going to get the ball and go all the way with it.
- 14:16So they have to stop our passing. And if they ignore that, it wipes out for the run.
- 14:21Because Tucker and Coy can go with that football. And that's a problem for the Bears.
- 14:26Our offense is really, really very good. Defensively, we have to stop Sayers on the ground.
- 14:32And that's going to be 11 football players crowding him every time he gets his hands on the ball.
- 14:36They'll probably come with pitch outs, sweep, off-tackle plays. As good as Gale Sayers is on a pitch out, Ted,
- 14:43he can go off-tackle just as well. And that's his favorite play, off-tackle behind Grape Blocking.
- 14:49And he has the ability to go all the way, especially down the goal line. They like to go off-tackle with him.
- 14:53And they have also in their backfield, Ronnie Bull, who's not having a great year. He's been hurried a lot.
- 14:59And Bull is very swift, very elusive around when he comes around to football.
- 15:05He's got a picture on that end very quick. And he also has the ability to pass as Sayers, too.
- 15:09They're both left-handed and they both can pass the football. This is something we might see during a football game.
- 15:14Okay, Dick Lynch, that's something we'll be watching for. And if it develops, pass on to our listeners.
- 15:19Let's take a look now at the offensive starting lineup for both these clubs as the players are being introduced on the field.
- 15:25For the New York Giants, starting off the split-end position will be filled by Homer Jones,
- 15:31a 6'2", 225-pounder from Texas Southern University.
- 15:35The left tackle will be Willie Young, a 6'250 pounder from Grambling College.
- 15:39The left guard will be Keith Case, a 6'3", 245-pounder from the University of Georgia.
- 15:45General DePaul will be Greg Larson, the 11-year veteran from Minnesota. He stands 6'3", and weighs 250 pounds.
- 15:52The right guard will be Darrell Betz, a 6'245-pounder from North Carolina State.
- 15:59The right tackle will be Francis Pei. He stands 6'5", weighs 250, played his college ball at the University of Missouri.
- 16:07The tight end will be Aaron Thomas, a 6'3", 210-pounder from Oregon State.
- 16:13The flanker back will be Joe Morrison, a 212-pound, 6'1", from the University of Cincinnati.
- 16:21The quarterback will be Fran Tarkenton, 6'190 pounds from the University of Georgia.
- 16:26The running back will be Tucker Frederickson, a 6'2", 230 pounds from Auburn University,
- 16:32and Ernie Coy, 6'3", 230 pounds from the University of Texas.
- 16:36For the Chicago Bears, at left end will be Dick Gordon, 5'11", 190 pounds from Michigan State.
- 16:42Left tackle, Randy Jackson, 6'5", 245 pounds from Florida.
- 16:47Left guard, Mike Raybold, 6'2", 250-pounder from Indiana.
- 16:51The center, Mike Pyle, a 6'3", 250-pounder from Yale University.
- 16:56The right guard, Jim Cadell, a 6'3", 240-pounder from San Jose State.
- 17:02The right tackle, Rob Witowska, a 6'3", 240-pounder from Notre Dame.
- 17:07The tight end will be Austin Denny, at 6'2", he weighs 229 pounds, played at the University of Tennessee.
- 17:14The flanker back will be Johnny Morris, a 5'10", 180-pounder from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
- 17:20The quarterback, Jack Conkannon, who we were speaking about earlier with Dick Link,
- 17:24he stands 6'3", weighs 205, and attended Boston College.
- 17:28The running backs will be Gail Sayers, at 6'3", he weighs 198 pounds, is from Kansas University,
- 17:34and Ronnie Bull, 6'2", 200 pounds from Baylor.
- 17:38Both teams are getting ready for the opening kickoff, which will be coming up in just a moment.
- 17:43Right now, we've got 70 seconds for station identification.
- 17:47This is the New York Giants Radio Network.
- 17:49That's 8'10", on your dial, in Schenectady, New York.
- 17:52Shortly for the opening kickoff in this game between the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants,
- 17:56Dick Link, this is a mighty important game for both of these ball clubs.
- 18:00Talking with some of the Chicago Bear players, they really feel that they are still in this race, and they are.
- 18:06If you look at their division, they're in the central division, with Green Bay hurting out,
- 18:10both for Bowski and Pitts out. I don't know how long for Bowski's going to be out.
- 18:14And with Bart Stott, certainly questionable, he goes game to game, but his shoulder isn't really in great shape.
- 18:21They feel, even though they're three games behind, that by the time they meet the Green Bay Packers,
- 18:28which is in about three games, that they'll have closed the gap.
- 18:31And so, since they're only a half game out of second place, and three games behind the leaders,
- 18:35the Green Bay Packers, they want to win this football game. This is an important game.
- 18:39And if you look back over the history of the Chicago Bears,
- 18:42they certainly come on real strong late in the season, and this is late in the season.
- 18:46This is the time when Papa Hallis gets them really rolling.
- 18:49So, they have an excellent chance to steal that central division.
- 18:53For the New York Giants, this is a mighty important game for us. We're one game out of first place.
- 18:57Both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Cleveland Browns right now are one game ahead of us.
- 19:02But perhaps if any one of those teams lose, we find ourselves right back in the first place.
- 19:06So, this is a big game for the Giants, a big game for the Bears,
- 19:10and that's what's going to make an exciting football game today.
- 19:13And the Giants have won the toss and elected to receive.
- 19:18They will be receiving from the goal-lined zone directly in front of us here at Wrigley Field,
- 19:25as the Bears line up for the kickoff.
- 19:29Out with referee Pat Hagerty for the coin tossing ceremony,
- 19:33with co-captains Joe Morrison, Jim Katkiewicz of the Giants,
- 19:36and for the Bears, Mike Pyle and Bob Witowska of the offensive unit,
- 19:41and Zygmunt Guss, the middle linebacker on defense.
- 19:44Now, here come the Giants out of their huddles around Coach Ali Sherman,
- 19:48ready to line up in receiving formation.
- 19:52Kicking off, placing the ball on the 40-yard line is Mack Percival,
- 19:56a 6'4", 220-pounder from Texas Tech, who will kick off for the Chicago Bears.
- 20:03The Giants come out directly below us now here at Wrigley Field, ready to receive the kickoff.
- 20:10And very, very shortly, we will have play-by-play action in the National Football League game
- 20:15between the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears.
- 20:18Percival has placed the ball on the 40-yard line for the Bears.
- 20:22The Giants are down below us, all set to receive.
- 20:25There's the signal here to tell you about it, our play-by-play reporter, Woody Yergman.
- 20:29There's the approach to the ball, the foot heads toward the near side of the field
- 20:33and goes out of bounds on about the 5-yard line, so it will be kicked over.
- 20:37Back to receive the kickoff will be Clarence Childs and Randy Minier.
- 20:43Minier was just activated this past week.
- 20:45He's a graduate of Purdue, 6'1", 200 pounds, and now has been assigned number 27.
- 20:52So we're here at Wrigley Field in Chicago prior to kickoff
- 20:55with a game between the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears.
- 20:59A word about Randy Minier, Woody, he, of course, was assigned to the New York Giants
- 21:05Bomb Club, the Westchester Bulls, and he had an excellent season there.
- 21:08He was running the ball very well. He is an excellent runner.
- 21:11Unfortunately, in his rookie year last year, he broke his leg up at training camp
- 21:15in Fairfield, Connecticut. But he's back and he's healthy and he's in real good shape
- 21:19and he's a fine runner.
- 21:21Number 83, Max Percival, will kick off with the Chicago Bears. The ball is on the 35.
- 21:28The arm has been placed high in the air, and there is the approach to the ball, the boost.
- 21:33It's a high over end over end kick taken by Clarence Childs on the 12.
- 21:37He carries it to the 20, to the 25, to the 30, up to the 35-yard line,
- 21:42and he's brought down over on the far side of the field on the 35-yard line.
- 21:47So it will be first and 10 for the New York Giants on their own 35.
- 21:52Bob Jones made the tackle for the Chicago Bears.
- 21:55In the opening seconds of play here at Wrigley Field,
- 21:58in other action in the National Football League, first period San Francisco 7, Washington nothing.
- 22:03Out of the huddle, up to the line of scrimmage, the New York Giants.
- 22:06Out on the flank on the far side is Del Schaffner.
- 22:09The split end on the near side, Homer Jones, the ball handed off to Triplet.
- 22:12Triplet picks up, yardage, gets past the line of scrimmage,
- 22:15past the 40-yard line, up to about the 41-yard line where he's tackled by Doug Buffoon.
- 22:22Mill, Triplet, 6 feet 2, 210 pounds.
- 22:29And so it's a pick up of 6, makes it second and 4.
- 22:33The ball on the 41-yard line, out of the huddle, up to the line of scrimmage, the New York Giants.
- 22:38Jones on the near side, Schaffner on the far side.
- 22:40There's the pitch out to Fredericton.
- 22:42Fredericton gets yardage, gets past the Nittsville Stripes,
- 22:45gets down to about the 42-yard line and he's tackled there by Jim Purnell,
- 22:51the right linebacker for the Chicago Bears.
- 22:54So it's a first down for the New York Giants,
- 22:5613 minutes and 40 seconds of playing time remaining in the first quarter.
- 23:00And an excellent block that time by Darrell Dess and opening up that hole for Tucker, it was nice and big.
- 23:05And Darrell Dess pulled out of the line and knocked Buffoon back,
- 23:09enabling Tucker to make that big yardage.
- 23:12So the ball is on about the 44-yard line.
- 23:15Over the ball at center, Greg Larson.
- 23:17There's the handoff to Triplet. Triplet hits the middle of the line.
- 23:19He stops at the line of scrimmage by Dick Eby and Frank Cornich.
- 23:23The middle portion of the forward wall for the Chicago Bears.
- 23:27He may have picked up about a yard or two.
- 23:32No score in the ball game here at Wrigley Field.
- 23:34The New York Giants and the Chicago Bears make it second down in about 10.
- 23:38No gain on that fast play.
- 23:40Second and 10, New York Giants calling the signals for the Giants.
- 23:44Fran Trachendon on the near side.
- 23:46It's Homer Jones on the far side.
- 23:48Del Schauffner, Trachendon fades.
- 23:50A pass to Jones. It's good.
- 23:51Jones gets it on about the 31-yard line,
- 23:54and he tackles just about at the time he receives it by Curtis Gentry,
- 23:59who is the right cornerback for the Chicago Bears.
- 24:04And so the ball is on the Bears' 31-yard line.
- 24:08First and 10, New York Giants on the Bears' 31.
- 24:13The New York Giants on the go in the opening quarter.
- 24:16Now this game between the Giants and the Chicago Bears, traditional rivals.
- 24:20There's the snap to Trachendon.
- 24:21Trachendon fades.
- 24:22A pass over the line to Aaron Thomas. It's good.
- 24:25And carried to about the 20-yard line on the near side of the field,
- 24:28where he's stopped there by Jim Purnell and Ricky Pettibone.
- 24:32Purnell, the right linebacker, Pettibone, the strong safety.
- 24:35Pettibone in his ninth season, Purnell in his fourth season.
- 24:40So it's another first down for the Giants.
- 24:43First and 10, New York Giants, 11 minutes and 46 seconds of playing time remaining in the first period.
- 24:49The Giants in possession of the football.
- 24:51First and 10, the ball on the 20 of the Chicago Bears.
- 24:54Trachendon calling the signals.
- 24:55The running back are Fredrickson and Triplett offside.
- 25:00Marty Ampler, I think, pulled offside on that pass way, Dick.
- 25:04Right, he did. He jumped the gun by about two seconds.
- 25:08I think Trachendon was ready to take the ball anyway and throw it,
- 25:12but the referee stepped right in.
- 25:13It was offside and they stopped the ball even before they got in motion.
- 25:17So that puts the ball on the 15-yard line.
- 25:21The ball on the New York Giants. It is first and five to go.
- 25:24The ball on the 15 of the Bears.
- 25:26Out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage, the Giants.
- 25:28Turner on the far side. He's a flanker.
- 25:30The split end. Homer Jones on the near side.
- 25:32The tight end. Aaron Thomas. Triplett and Fredrickson are the running backs.
- 25:35The ball handed off to Fredrickson.
- 25:36Fredrickson to the five down to about the two-yard line,
- 25:38and he's forced out of bounds on the near side of the field by Curtis Gentry,
- 25:42right cornerback for the Chicago Bears.
- 25:45Tucker Fredrickson, who this year ended the ball game with 261 yards rushing in 81 carries.
- 25:53Well, it's been a giant habit to take the ball as they get it
- 25:56and move right down the field in every game.
- 25:58They've scored, I think, just about every time they had their hands on the ball the first time, Woody.
- 26:02They're in real fine scoring position once again.
- 26:05They're talking in his boredom right down.
- 26:07First and goal to go with the ball on the three-yard line.
- 26:09Tuck in and calling the signals.
- 26:10Hands the ball off to Triplett. Triplett hits the middle of the line.
- 26:13He bangs into it, but he has stopped by the center portion of the front four for the Chicago Bears.
- 26:19Dick Eby, Frank Cornish, and middle line backer Dick Butkus.
- 26:23It's going to be tough moving a man like Frank Cornish, Woody.
- 26:26They say he's 270 pounds, but I was next to him down on the field.
- 26:30I think he's over the 300 mark. He's about 3'5".
- 26:34Bob Crespino goes in the ball game. He moves in a tight end, and Aaron Thomas slips over to split end.
- 26:39Del Schaffner is the flanker back.
- 26:41The running backs are Fredrickson and Triplett.
- 26:43Tuck in and calling the signal for the New York Giants.
- 26:45Greg Larson over the ball at center. Takes the snap from center.
- 26:48Hands the ball off to Triplett. Triplett loses the footing as he hits the line,
- 26:52and he has stopped at the line of scrimmage by Ed O'Brannovich,
- 26:55number 87 in his sixth season in the National Football League, 6'3", 255 pounds.
- 27:02The New York Giants knocking on the door.
- 27:05The ball on about the one-yard line.
- 27:10Bill Triplett went into the line, and as he moved into the line, he tried to cut in, lost his footing,
- 27:16picked up about two. One yard to go.
- 27:20Tuck in and calling the signal. Takes the snap from center.
- 27:23He fades. He's looking for a receiver.
- 27:25There's a pick-up to the next line.
- 27:27To Darrell Dess. It's a lateral, and I believe Dess carried it in.
- 27:36Yes, that's right, Woody. You called it right.
- 27:38That's a touchdown, and I bet you Darrell Dess is really very amazed,
- 27:42but very late at the same time, Tuck in and put on a great rush by Ed O'Brannovich.
- 27:47As he went to try to go into the end zone with the ball, he was tackled,
- 27:51and instinctively turned around, threw the ball to Darrell Dess,
- 27:54and put his shoulder in, and just took over two fair defenders with him.
- 27:57A touchdown, Giants lead.
- 27:59Darrell Dess scores the touchdown for the Giants.
- 28:02Taking a lateral from Fran Tarkin, and seats go relaxed.
- 28:05Will attempt the conversion. There's the hole, the boot. It is good.
- 28:08And so it's seven for the New York Giants, nothing for the Chicago Bears.
- 28:12More New York Giants football in just 60 seconds.
- 28:16So the New York Giants get on the scoreboard first here at Wrigley Field in Chicago
- 28:20early in the first quarter, taking the opening kickoff, a 65-yard drive,
- 28:24capped by a lateral pass from Fran Tarkin to Darrell Dess for the touchdown.
- 28:27Kogelach's conversion kick was good. The Giants lead the Chicago Bears 7-0.
- 28:32Now here is Kogelach kicking off for the Giants.
- 28:34Here to tell you about it, the network voice of the Giants, Woody Erdman.
- 28:37Gordon and Sayers lined up one behind the other, an attempt to confuse Kogelach.
- 28:41As Kogelach kicks off, the ball taken by Ralph Kurek.
- 28:44Kurek carries the ball along the near side of the field,
- 28:48and he is finally down on about the 35-yard line.
- 28:53Right, Woody, I think, as we called it,
- 28:56Dale Sayers and Gordon were back there one behind the other,
- 28:59so they were trying to confuse the Giants rushing team coming down.
- 29:02Kogelach tried to put it over on the left side of the field.
- 29:05Chicago Bears out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage, calling the signal.
- 29:08Jack Kencannon, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears, over the ball at center, Mike Pyle.
- 29:11The ball is snapped back to Kencannon, he hands it off to Ron Bull.
- 29:14Bull hits the line, he picks up several yards,
- 29:17and he's brought down short of the 40-yard line.
- 29:19Ron Bull, who is back in action, he was out.
- 29:23The result of injury and makes his return today.
- 29:25He's a six-year veteran, six feet tall, 200 pounds.
- 29:28A graduate of Baylor.
- 29:31Out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage, the Chicago Bears.
- 29:34It is second and eighth.
- 29:36The running backs are Sayers and Ron Bull.
- 29:38The flanker back is Johnny Morris.
- 29:40Over the ball at center is Mike Pyle.
- 29:42The quarterback, Jack Kencannon.
- 29:44Kencannon takes the snap from center.
- 29:46He fades, looking for a receiver.
- 29:47He's being left behind the line of scrimmage.
- 29:49Kencannon is after him.
- 29:50He's being cheeked.
- 29:51There's a short pass, a free pass to Austin Jenney.
- 29:55Jenney got the ball on the far side of the field
- 29:57and carried it up to about the 39- to 40-yard line.
- 30:01Ken Avery and Bill Flayne brought him down.
- 30:06Austin Jenney, six feet two, 229 pounds.
- 30:10The rookie from Tennessee made the reception,
- 30:13averting what could have been a tragedy.
- 30:18So it is now second and about seven.
- 30:23The Giants at that time lined up in an odd defense.
- 30:25They had five men on the line of scrimmage,
- 30:28and it was strictly the linemen who were putting the rush on Kencannon.
- 30:32Chicago Bears out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage.
- 30:34Kencannon takes the snap from center.
- 30:36There's a short pass, looks at number 47, Johnny Morris.
- 30:39Morris catches the ball, and he is down.
- 30:41As soon as he gets the ball on about the 47- to 48-yard line of the Giants,
- 30:45Scott Eaton made the tackle.
- 30:47Scott Eaton has returned after having been out as a result of injury.
- 30:51He's the left cornerback for the Giants.
- 30:53And he's covering one of the real fine receivers in the National Football League,
- 30:56Johnny Morris.
- 30:57He's been beset by injuries also, Woody,
- 30:59but he's one of the finest receivers I've ever played against.
- 31:02First and 10 Chicago Bears with a ball now in Giants territory.
- 31:06We have 6 minutes and 57 seconds of playing time remaining in the first quarter.
- 31:10There is a pass to Morris, on the 40, on the 30,
- 31:13and he is brought down on the 29-yard line by Wendell Harris,
- 31:16strong safety man for the Giants.
- 31:18Johnny Morris took the pass on the near side of the field from Jackson Kenan,
- 31:23and he carried it to about the 29-yard line of the New York Giants,
- 31:28another first down, first and 10 Chicago.
- 31:31The Giants are leading 7-0.
- 31:33Other scores of National Football League action,
- 31:35first period, Baltimore 21, Atlanta 0.
- 31:38First quarter, San Francisco 7, Washington 0.
- 31:41And here at Wrigley Field it's 7 for the Giants,
- 31:43nothing for the Bears, but the Bears are threatening.
- 31:46Up at the line of scrimmage, the Chicago Bears,
- 31:48Jackson Kenan calling the signals.
- 31:50There's a snap from center.
- 31:51He's fading.
- 31:52He's being crushed.
- 31:53And there is a pass intended on the near side of the field for Austin Jenney,
- 31:57right as Jackson Kenan was being pulled down by Bob Lertz-Semmah.
- 32:02Bob Lertz-Semmah, one of the defensive tackles for the New York Giants.
- 32:06One thing in the Giants' favor so far in this ball game,
- 32:09as far as when Kenan goes back to pass, Woody,
- 32:11he does not drop back very deep.
- 32:13That time he only dropped back around 4 yards,
- 32:15and the giant linemen were right on top of him,
- 32:17causing him to just try to get rid of the football before it was tackled.
- 32:20So in this league, if you're going to pass,
- 32:22it takes a little bit more time.
- 32:23You have to drop back at least 7 yards,
- 32:25but he hasn't done it so far.
- 32:26The flanker back, Johnny Morris on the near side,
- 32:28the split end, Dick Gordon over on the far side.
- 32:30The quarterback is Jackson Kenan.
- 32:32He fades.
- 32:33Again, the right's being put on him.
- 32:34There's a screen pass to Ronnie Bull.
- 32:36Bull gets it, carries it over to the far side of the field to about the 35.
- 32:39Now, that'll be a lot of about 4 yards on the play.
- 32:42Vince Costello made the tackle.
- 32:44And Costello had him man to man, Woody.
- 32:46He read the play correctly.
- 32:47As Bull came out into what we're looking at right now, the right flat zone,
- 32:51Vinnie Costello, with 11 years experience, was right in back of him.
- 32:54As he caught the football, he dragged him right down.
- 32:56And it was a real fine play by Vince Costello.
- 32:58Now the Bears are in a little bit of trouble as far as trying to get the first down.
- 33:02They have the third down and about 15 to go,
- 33:05and they'll have to get at least 15 to keep this drive going.
- 33:09Ralph Keurig replaces Ron Bull as a running back for the Chicago Bears.
- 33:13Johnny Morris flanked out on the far side.
- 33:15Dick Gordon, the split end on the near side.
- 33:17Kenan takes the snap from center.
- 33:18The ball handed off to Gale Stairs.
- 33:20Gale Stairs rushes to the far side.
- 33:22He is down on about the 30-yard line by Ken Avery.
- 33:27The Bears went into this ball game with 397 yards gained rushing and three touchdowns.
- 33:32He's a tough one.
- 33:33Six feet tall, 198 pounds.
- 33:36The ball is on the 30-yard line.
- 33:39That makes it fourth down and about 11 or 12 yards to go.
- 33:42They will try now for a field goal.
- 33:44Max Percival, 6 feet 4, 220 pounds in his sixth season in the National Football League.
- 33:51Mike Pyle holds the ball.
- 33:53Accept the ball from center.
- 33:54There is the boot.
- 33:55It is no good.
- 33:56It's wide to the near side.
- 33:57So it is no good.
- 33:59And the score remains, the New York Giants 7, the Chicago Bears nothing.
- 34:04We have four minutes and 35 seconds of playing time remaining in the first quarter of this football game.
- 34:097-0.
- 34:10The Giants out front.
- 34:12So the ball will be placed on the 20-yard line and the Giants will take over possession.
- 34:17Coming into the ball game, Aaron Thomas, Joe Morrison will be the flanker back.
- 34:21Homer Jones will split in.
- 34:22Aaron Thomas will tie it in.
- 34:24There's a pause in the action here at Wrigley Field.
- 34:26The score, 7 for the Giants, nothing for the Bears.
- 34:29More Giants football in just 30 seconds.
- 34:32Here at Wrigley Field, the New York Giants have held the Chicago Bears on their first attempted scoring.
- 34:37The Bears put the ball in play on their own 35 and were unable to get the field goal attempt, which was just tried.
- 34:44So the Giants take over on their own 20-yard line.
- 34:47First and 10 here to tell you about it, Woody Erdman.
- 34:50Joe Shofner remains the flanker back and will not be replaced by Joe Morrison.
- 34:54There's a snap from center to Tuckerman and Hands it off to Triplet.
- 34:57Triplet bangs into the middle of the line.
- 34:59He gets to about the line of scrimmage and he meets Dick Butkus and Dick E.B. at the middle of the line.
- 35:05So there is no gain on the play and it remains 10 yards to go second down for the New York Giants.
- 35:10Well, it's a name we'll be hearing a lot about, Woody.
- 35:12This Dick Butkus is a real fine linebacker.
- 35:15This is his third year and his previous two years he was all NFL as middle linebacker.
- 35:21Quite a tribute.
- 35:22The Bears now with five defensive halfbacks.
- 35:24Blackenden rolls to the near side.
- 35:27There's a pass to Homer Jones.
- 35:29Incomplete.
- 35:30Lenny McCrae, the left cornerback, covering Homer Jones.
- 35:34And had Homer been able to get his hands on the ball, he would have been on his way.
- 35:38But as we mentioned, the Bears went to five defensive halfbacks.
- 35:42Joe Taylor replaced Jim Vernell, the right linebacker.
- 35:45And so, Gentry Taylor, that is Rosie Taylor, Joe Taylor, Richie Pettibone, and Benny McCay,
- 35:52all were in that defensive backfield.
- 35:54And they read the situation right, preventing a pass completion from Tuckerman intended for Homer Jones.
- 36:00Incomplete, third and tenth.
- 36:02The New York Giants move onto the huddle up to the line of scrimmage.
- 36:05Over on the far side is Del Schaffner, he's the flanker.
- 36:08Split end, Homer Jones.
- 36:09Tuckerman takes the snap from center.
- 36:11There is a pass intended for Schaffner.
- 36:13Out of bounds.
- 36:15And so it will be fourth and tenth, and the Giants will be fourth to punt.
- 36:19All right, Woody, as you know, last week we saw five defensive backs against the New York Giants offense.
- 36:26The Minnesota Vikings had that maneuver in their defensive backfield.
- 36:29And this is exactly what the Bears are doing.
- 36:31And at the same time, the Bears, with their five defensive backs, all speed demons, they're all very fast back there,
- 36:36are flicking Dick Butkiss right up the middle of that giant line.
- 36:40But he's being picked up very well by Greg Larson.
- 36:42And so the Giants start to win upon formation.
- 36:45Ernie Coy, back to do the punting.
- 36:47He's standing on the seven.
- 36:48It's a little snap from center.
- 36:50There's the boot.
- 36:51It's a high wobbling spiral that called for a fair catch, called for on about the 42-yard line, good for about 40 yards.
- 36:59And so the Chicago Bears will take over with a ball resting on their own 42-yard line.
- 37:04The Giants are leading seven to nothing.
- 37:06We have three minutes and 45 seconds of playing time remaining in the first quarter.
- 37:10Seven to nothing, the Giants out front.
- 37:13The only scores we have of the two we reported, Baltimore over Atlanta in the first period, 21 to nothing,
- 37:18and also a first quarter score, San Francisco, seven, Washington, nothing.
- 37:23The game's Philadelphia against Los Angeles, Dallas, New Orleans, Detroit meets Minnesota, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Cleveland against Green Bay.
- 37:31Let's pause.
- 37:32Ten seconds for station identification.
- 37:34This is the New York Giants Radio Network.
- 37:36Hi, this is Jerry Ducey.
- 37:38Down my way, we tonight for conversation on WGY, H Avenue, Dial Skidding.
- 37:47Here at Wrigley Field in Chicago, we have a momentary time out.
- 37:50And time for us to remind you that if you haven't already done so,
- 37:53it is time that you sent in your card or letter to Woody and Dick
- 37:57and became a member of our honorary New York Giants Sportscasters Club.
- 38:00Just send your name and address plus the car letters of the station to which you're now listening.
- 38:04We'll be giving away footballs, autographs by the Giants, official team pictures, Giants yearbook,
- 38:09and we'll make you a member of our honorary Sportscasters Club.
- 38:12Nothing to buy, no obligation. Just send us your name and address.
- 38:15Okay, Woody.
- 38:16Chicago Bears over the line of scrimmage. Jack Ken Cannon calling the signals. The flanker back is Johnny Morris.
- 38:20The split end, Dick Gordon. There's a snap from center.
- 38:23A ball handed off to Serz. Serz attempts a sweep, and he gets to about the 45, finally up to about the 50 yards.
- 38:30It's to the midfield side over on the far side of the field, and he is brought down over there
- 38:34by strong safetyman Wendell Harris and by middle linebacker Vince Costello.
- 38:39Well, that's the strong factor for this guy, Gale Serz. Dick Lynch.
- 38:43That's right, Woody, and he almost busted those tackles and got around there.
- 38:46Had he got around those boys, he was running for daylights.
- 38:50Gale Serz on a sweep, moves the ball eight yards, so it is now second and two.
- 38:56The Chicago Bears up at the line of scrimmage over the ball at center. Mike Pyle, there's a snap to Ken Cannon.
- 39:00Ken Cannon fakes a handoff. There's a pass to the near side of the field.
- 39:04Intended on the near side of the field for Dick Gordon.
- 39:07The split end, he was covered by Spider Lockhart, who made a brilliant, brilliant lunge for that ball, Dick.
- 39:13Right, and he just about, at least he interfered enough with Gordon so he couldn't get his hands on the football.
- 39:18It did go off his fingertips, but Spider made a valiant effort to intercept the football.
- 39:22He almost got it himself, but a fine play by Spider, picking up Dick Gordon as he came across the middle of the field.
- 39:27And once again, Woody, the giant defensive line, was right on top of Ken Cannon, causing him to slow the ball a little bit early.
- 39:34Number 87, Edo Bradovich, has gone in the ball game. He replaced Dick Gordon.
- 39:41Ken Cannon calling the signals and the ball off.
- 39:44There's Bumble's over on the far side of the field. There's a pileup over there.
- 39:49And it is recovered by the New York Giants. Gale Fairs attempted a slam.
- 39:54And as he was moving into the line, the football was knocked out of his arms by Ken Avery.
- 40:00And so it was fallen upon by the New York Giants, fallen upon by Ken Avery.
- 40:06So it is now first and 10 for the Giants on the midfield strike.
- 40:11They're over on the far side of the field as they break out of the huddle.
- 40:15Joe Schaffner is flanked out on the far side. Split on the near side.
- 40:18Homer Jones, the tight end Aaron Thomas, the running back, Triplett and Frederickson.
- 40:23Karkinen, takes the handle, gives the ball over the middle to Schaffner. Schaffner takes it down to the 20, down to about the 15-yard line.
- 40:31After taking that pass to the middle of the field, he raced to the near side of the field and carried it all the way down to the 15-yard line.
- 40:38Roosevelt Taylor, the free safety man for the Chicago Bears, prevented Joe Schaffner from taking it in.
- 40:45And so the New York Giants are again knocking on the door of the Chicago Bears.
- 40:49They're leading seven and up in the Giants. The ball placed officially on the 16.
- 40:54So it is now first and 10 Giants on the Bears' 16. Schaffner flanked out to the far side.
- 41:00Jones on the near side, the tight end Thomas, Triplett and Frederickson, the running back.
- 41:04Here's the snap from center, the hand off to Triplett. Triplett finds the hole as he hits the far side of the line,
- 41:08carries the ball past the 15-yard line, down to about the 13, and he's tackled there by Budgett and Buffoon.
- 41:17The Chicago Bears now deep in their own territory with a Giants' dissection, the Bears using free linebackers.
- 41:25Right down here, Woody, there's no really room to run. I mean, no deep secondary, so that's why they keep the free linebackers in.
- 41:31They do expect a run, but they might get the pass this time.
- 41:34The ball on about the 11, the ball handed off from Tarkin into Frederickson.
- 41:37Frederickson, the middle of the line, passed the 10-yard line, picks up several yards, and he's brought down by Marty Ampler and Frank Cornish.
- 41:45Ampler, the right defensive end, and Frank Cornish, the left defensive tackle.
- 41:52So it is now third and one. Aaron Thomas now the split end, Bob Crespino moves in at tight end.
- 41:59Homer Jones leads the ball game. Schunker flanked out on the far side.
- 42:03Frederickson and Triplett, the running back. Tarkin then calling the signals, takes the snap from center,
- 42:08hands the ball off, carried to the near side of the line, carried into the line by Triplett,
- 42:13by Frederickson, I believe, as they unfold, and he may have picked up a first down.
- 42:18He's very close, Woody, I think he has got it. Yes, he does. It's a first down and a fine run by Tucker.
- 42:22Just put his head down, his shoulder went right into the linebacker Burnell, and he got it.
- 42:28At least he knocked him down enough to get his first down. It's a real thick first down for the Giants.
- 42:33Now they have six yards to go for a touchdown, but they're in excellent position here.
- 42:37First and goal to goal for the Giants. Schunker flanked out to the far side.
- 42:41Jones back in the ball game. He's a split end, moved in on the near side.
- 42:44Thomas the tight end. Tarkin then calling the signals. There's the snap from center.
- 42:48The ball given on a pitch out to Frederickson. Frederickson takes the sweep and then turns in
- 42:52and gets to about the line as Krimigy may have picked up a yard. Dick Pukkis and Ed O'Brannibich make the tackle.
- 43:00That's the end of the quarter, and so at the completion of the first quarter,
- 43:05the score here at Wrigley Field in Chicago, the New York Giants 7, the Chicago Bears nothing.
- 43:10Okay, Woody Eerdmans, say a friend here in Chicago, our New York Giants Radio Network broadcasting staff

- 44:07Best of all, Lowe's Summit Hotel, you know, is where the Giants make their home away from home when they're playing in New York.
- 44:13Check the yellow pages or your favorite travel agent for reservation information.
- 44:17Here we go to the second quarter of play.
- 44:19Chicago, here to tell you about it, Woody Eerdmans.
- 44:22The Giants up to the line is coming. Schaffner on the near side.
- 44:25Bob Crespino in the ball game, a tight end to split in. Aaron Thomas talking to Dakes to staff from center.
- 44:30He fades back to about the 15.
- 44:32He's being right. He's pulled out back on the 10-yard line.
- 44:35Edel Brodovich, a pass right, put on Fran Tuckenden.
- 44:39And they pull him down behind the line of scrimmage back on about the 10.
- 44:42That's the loss of about five yards of the play.
- 44:45Right, Woody. I think Fran was trying to hit Del Schaffner, who was covered very, very well by Benny McRae over here on our side of the field.
- 44:52Del was trying his very famous square out pattern, which he does excellently.
- 44:57Benny, with no room behind him, just stayed with him move for move and Tuckenden could not release the football.
- 45:02And so it is now.
- 45:05The New York Giants in possession of the football, third and nine. Schaffner flanked out on the near side.
- 45:11The tight end is Bob Crespino. The split end is Aaron Thomas talking to Dakes.
- 45:16There's a pass in the end zone.
- 45:18And they stop their play. Benny McRae, the play goes to the 10.
- 45:22He's on a 15 yard line and he's stuck on a 15 yard line on the far side of the field by Cheryl Depp.
- 45:28That pass intended for Del Schaffner under the goal post.
- 45:32Intercepted there by Benny McRae, who took the ball away from Schaffner.
- 45:36Chicago Bears at the 17 yard line.
- 45:40So it is a pick up of about two yards. We'll make it second and eighth.
- 45:44And that's a fine one on one stop by Clarence Childs.
- 45:47He came up and kept his head up and as the Bears was trying to get around him by juking,
- 45:52he just went right into him and pulled him right down. A fine tackle by Clarence Childs.
- 45:56Ron Bull and Gale Sairs are the running back.
- 46:00Sairs out on the wing on the far side.
- 46:03Contanna takes the staff from center. He rolls out.
- 46:05There is a pass to Sairs. Sairs tries to reverse his position after getting the pass.
- 46:10And there is a marker on the play.
- 46:13Gale Sairs took that ball heading toward the far sideline.
- 46:17As he caught the ball, he tried to reverse his field.
- 46:20He could not do it, lost his footing.
- 46:22And a marker was drawn on the play.
- 46:25Well they're calling a face match penalty. Woody, it's a 15 yard penalty.
- 46:29It takes the Chicago Bears out of the hole, so to speak.
- 46:32At least they are 15 yards given to them that time.
- 46:35The referee was standing right there and he threw the flag down.
- 46:38Has the ball player, Sairs tried to spin away, I think one of the ball players grabbed the face match.
- 46:42It's an automatic 15 yard penalty and a first down.
- 46:45So it's first and 10 Chicago Bears on their own 38 yard line.
- 46:48Number 45, Dick Gordon is split on the far side.
- 46:51Johnny Morris flanked on the near side.
- 46:53There's the staff from center. The handoff, the carry into the middle by Ron Bull.
- 46:57Bull gets to about the 40 yard line.
- 46:59And he is brought down over on the far side of the field by Vince Costello, Bob Lertsema, and Jim Moran.
- 47:04Lertsema and Moran, the defensive tackle for the Giants, and Vince Costello, middle linebacker.
- 47:09So the ball is on the 41.
- 47:12And it's second down and about seven to go.
- 47:14Second and seven Chicago with a ball on their own 41 yard line.
- 47:19A pick up of three.
- 47:20As they move out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage,
- 47:22Gordon splits out to the far side and Morris is flanked on the near side.
- 47:26The tight end is Austin Denny, a rookie.
- 47:28Jekken Kellen calling the signals. He fades. There's a marker on the play.
- 47:32There is a pass to Sairs. Sairs take it on about the fifth field stripe.
- 47:36He carries it, tries to get it beyond the midfield stripe,
- 47:40and he is dropped there on the far side of the field by Spider Lockhart and Vince Costello.
- 47:45A short pass, Kankanen to Sairs. There is a marker on the play.
- 47:50Yes, well, I think they were offside on that particular play.
- 47:53It'll go against the Chicago Bears. Five yard penalty against the Giants.
- 47:57Against the Chicago Bears.
- 47:59It's interesting to note, though, that Kankanen's not going for the deep pass.
- 48:02He is going for just a short, mediocre pass. He's just hitting seven yards
- 48:07and letting the receiver do the rest of it for him.
- 48:09And he has two receivers that can do it.
- 48:11He's sending Sairs out of the backfield.
- 48:13Once he gets his hand on the ball, he can take off and make yardage for him.
- 48:16And the same with Johnny Morris, who has done it so far in his four game, too.
- 48:19So with that penalty, it is now second and 12, Dick.
- 48:22Number 45, Dick Gordon split on the far side.
- 48:24The flanker back, Johnny Morris, wide on the near side.
- 48:27There's the snap. The Kankanen rolls out.
- 48:29He's looking for receivers. He tries to run.
- 48:32The 45 worked.
- 48:34Almost just got him out, but dropped on the 41 by Wendell Harris and Scott Eaton.
- 48:39Jackson Kannon took the snap from center, looked for receivers,
- 48:44decided to run with a football, picked up blocking, and picked up some real yardage.
- 48:48Right, Woody, that's very, very similar play that the New York Giants have with Rand Tarkin.
- 48:53And it's the option pass. He can run it or he can throw the football.
- 48:56That time he was looking for players coming across the middle of the field.
- 48:59Players were covered by Vince Costello, so he decided to run with it, and he made real fine yardage.
- 49:03And as we pointed out, he has the ability to run.
- 49:05He's a 9.9. He does the 9, the 100 in 9.9, so he's fast and he's big enough to take a beating when he gets tackled.
- 49:12Jimmy Jones has now replaced Johnny Morris at flanker back.
- 49:15He's on the far side.
- 49:18There is the snap that Kankanen, Kankanen gives the ball to Jones.
- 49:21Jones picks up blocking, races along the near sideline,
- 49:24and he is forced out of bounds on the near side of the field.
- 49:28On about the 20-yard line, Vince Costello and Clarence Childs.
- 49:32Jimmy Jones went in the ball game at the flanker back position,
- 49:36and then on the reverse took the ball from Kankanen.
- 49:40Race to the near side. Dick?
- 49:41Right, Woody, and they were very lucky that time.
- 49:44Sayers started in motion just before the play, but his forward mo-
- 49:48it wasn't a forward motion, it was a side.
- 49:50As long as he's going away from the line of scrimmage, or lateral to it,
- 49:53they're not going to call it.
- 49:54So he did slip, but he slipped, he was going towards the side.
- 49:57He took the ball from Kankanen, he hit and turned it off to Jones,
- 50:00who made real fine yardage.
- 50:02And so it is now first and 10 with the ball resting on about the 17 of the Giants.
- 50:06Kankanen calling the signals.
- 50:07He hands the ball off to Sayers.
- 50:08Sayers is weak, gets to about the line of scrimmage.
- 50:12He may have lost the yard on the play as he tried to turn the corner.
- 50:14Scott Eaton stopped him, pushed him over to the far side of the field.
- 50:19Eaton assisted by Ken Avery.
- 50:21The right linebacker, Scott Eaton left cornerback for the Giants.
- 50:24There's a loss of about a yard or two on the play, Dick.
- 50:27Yes, Woody, that play actually was scheduled to go off tackle inside the offensive end.
- 50:34And as Sayers, who had such magnificent speed in the sense of running,
- 50:39he threw the hole with block, cut away on the outside,
- 50:42and a fine tackle by Scott Eaton.
- 50:44He tried outrun and he didn't.
- 50:46Second and 11, second and 11 for the Chicago Bears.
- 50:49Kankanen takes the snap from center. He rolls out.
- 50:51He's looking for a receiver.
- 50:52He's being rushed behind the line of scrimmage by Bob Lersema.
- 50:55He dropped him back on the 35-yard line.
- 51:00A correction.
- 51:02I was watching Kankanen and the rush that was put on Kankanen by Kankanen and Lersema.
- 51:07And in the meantime, Kankanen connects with Austin Denney.
- 51:11Austin Denney, 62, 229 pounds, a rookie.
- 51:17And Kankanen is down, back on about the 35-yard line.
- 51:21Well, that was a scramble pattern, Woody.
- 51:24It was the same play that Kankanen ran before.
- 51:27Instead of throwing the ball, he ran with the ball the first time.
- 51:31This time, instead of running, he stopped and looked for a passing receiver.
- 51:34Denney was covered at the time, and he scrambled and went on back and pissed
- 51:39as he was about to be tackled.
- 51:40He got rid of the football and made a complete two-denny.
- 51:43It would give him still four yards to go.
- 51:45But in the meantime, Kankanen was hit very hard by Jim Tadcarriz.
- 51:49A free, legitimate tackle, and Kankanen right now is on the ground.
- 51:53He's being attended to by the position.
- 51:55So if he's hurt, you might see quite a different football game in there
- 52:01with Rudy Bukic.
- 52:05It's Rudy Bukic.
- 52:06That's him in the football game.
- 52:07He's a boy that can throw the football.
- 52:09If he has time to throw it, he can pinpoint anybody.
- 52:11It looks like Bukic is coming out on the field, too.
- 52:15Kankanen is going to stay in the ball game.
- 52:20It looked for a moment that, as though Larry Rake's draw would replace Kankanen,
- 52:25but Kankanen shakes him off.
- 52:27And so, as Dick has told you, it is third and four on that pass completion
- 52:31from Jack Kankanen to Austin Denny.
- 52:35Denny went into this ball game, and he had one reception.
- 52:40He had been thrown to 11 times and had only one reception.
- 52:43He's a rookie.
- 52:46Out of the huddle, up to the line of scrimmage, the Chicago Bears,
- 52:49number 47, Johnny Morris back in the ball game.
- 52:52He's flanked out on the far side.
- 52:53Dick Gordon split on the near side.
- 52:55There's the snap.
- 52:57Kankanen, he decides to run with the football,
- 53:00heads to the far side of the field, and he's brought down back on about
- 53:03the 15-yard line by Bill Swain,
- 53:06Swain the left linebacker for the New York Giants.
- 53:09Kankanen looked for open receivers, couldn't find them,
- 53:12and he rolled out to the far side, brought down on the 15-yard line
- 53:16by Bill Swain.
- 53:18So it's brought down for the Chicago Bears, fourth and seventh.
- 53:23With the ball resting on the 15-yard line,
- 53:25Mack Percival will try now for the field goal.
- 53:28The ball will be held on about the 22.
- 53:31There's the snap to hold the boost.
- 53:33It is blocked.
- 53:35Freeman White blocks the attempted field goal by Mack Percival.
- 53:40And so the score remains seven for the New York Giants,
- 53:42nothing for the Bears.
- 53:44We have nine minutes and 40 seconds of playing time remaining
- 53:47in the first half of this football game.
- 53:49Seven to nothing, the Giants over the Bears.
- 53:51Right, Woody, and that's exactly why they put in Freeman White
- 53:53in this situation.
- 53:55He is big, he's fast, and he gets in there real good.
- 53:58He comes down, crashing outside their blocking backs,
- 54:01and just stretches out.
- 54:03You can see what they put him in there for,
- 54:05and he did a fine job that time.
- 54:07Homer Jones, good on the far side,
- 54:09Shopner flanked on the near side, the running back,
- 54:11triplet, and Fredrickson.
- 54:13Tarkinen calling the signals at quarterback.
- 54:15There's a marker on the play.
- 54:17Tarkinen, a long pass intended downfield for Homer Jones.
- 54:19It is incomplete.
- 54:21There's a marker on the play.
- 54:23Curtis Gentry was covering Homer Jones.
- 54:26Gentry is the right quarterback.
- 54:28He has been assigned to Homer Jones.
- 54:30There are two markers, one down on about the five-yard line,
- 54:32and one that one in Giants territory,
- 54:36and one at around the midfield strike.
- 54:38Well, Woody, I think what happened there,
- 54:40first of all, Chicago was offside.
- 54:42Butkus tried to rush in in the middle.
- 54:44He was picked up right away by Greg Larson.
- 54:48But in the meantime, as Homer was going downfield,
- 54:50the referee threw the flag against Homer,
- 54:52saying that he pushed the defender.
- 54:54Actually, from where I was looking,
- 54:56it looked the other way, but the referee knows better, of course.
- 54:59It is calling a penalty against the Giants
- 55:02and a penalty against the Chicago Bears.
- 55:05I believe that they were offside, so if that's the case,
- 55:08it'll be offsetting penalties,
- 55:10and we'll take it right from the start, first down again.
- 55:12Baltimore scored 14 points in the second quarter.
- 55:15They lead 35-0 over Atlanta.
- 55:17San Francisco 14-3 over Washington.
- 55:20That's the second quarter score.
- 55:22Nothing to nothing, Pittsburgh and St. Louis.
- 55:26The New York Giants leading by 7,
- 55:289 minutes and 14 seconds of playing time
- 55:30remaining in the first half of this football game.
- 55:34Offsetting penalties, Dick, as you called it.
- 55:38No, actually, Woody, it's not an offsetting penalty.
- 55:42They are calling offensive interference against the Giants,
- 55:46so it puts them back six yards,
- 55:48half distance to the goal line, which is six yards further.
- 55:52Now there's a step to Fran Tugend,
- 55:54and Tugend hands the ball off to Tucker Frederiksen.
- 55:57Frederiksen carries the ball into the near side of the line,
- 56:00and he is stopped by Frank Cornish, the defensive tackle,
- 56:03and Dick Budkis, middle linebacker for the Chicago Bears.
- 56:07Jim Purnell leaves the ball game, and Joe Taylor goes in,
- 56:11and that means the Chicago Bears are going to five defensive hotbacks.
- 56:15Right, and when they've done this in the past now,
- 56:17talking in is come on and try to hit Del Schauffner,
- 56:20also a man who might be open in this situation,
- 56:22since they will have two men on Homer Jones, will be Aaron Thomas.
- 56:26Second and 14 for the New York Giants as they line up at the line of scrimmage.
- 56:30Tuckenden calling the signals over the ball at center, Greg Larsen.
- 56:33There's the snap to Tuckenden.
- 56:35He hands the ball off.
- 56:36There's a sweep, attempted and stopped over on the far side of the field
- 56:40by number 46, Curtis Gentry.
- 56:42Tucker Frederiksen attempted a sweep around the far side of the Chicago Bears line,
- 56:47and right cornerback, Curtis Gentry, stopped him.
- 56:51So it's third down for the New York Giants, third and 15.
- 56:55Eight minutes and five seconds of playing time remaining
- 56:58in the first half of the football game.
- 57:00Seven and nothing.
- 57:01The Giants scored early in the contest on a lateral from Fran Tuckenden to Darrell Dett.
- 57:06Out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage, the New York Giants.
- 57:09Fran Tuckenden is calling the signals for the New York Giants.
- 57:13The running backs are Frederiksen and Triplett.
- 57:16Tuckenden takes the snap from center.
- 57:18He rolls back into the end zone.
- 57:20There is a pass intended on the near side of the field for Aaron Thomas, incomplete.
- 57:26And almost intercepted, Woody.
- 57:28That time Fetterboe and it came up on the football.
- 57:30He left Aaron Thomas go and made the move for the football,
- 57:33but he was just a little bit too late.
- 57:35Would have been a fine interception and put the Bears in great position,
- 57:38but now the Giants are kicking from their end zone.
- 57:40They have the wind at their backs, so that's a real good factor.
- 57:44But don't forget who's going to be down here trying to catch the football is Gale Sayers,
- 57:47and you know what he can do when he has the football in his hand.
- 57:50First period score, Dick. Dallas 7, New Orleans 7.
- 57:55Here at Wrigley Field, the New York Giants are leading 7-0, I think.
- 57:59The Giants in punt formation. Back to do the booting is Ernie Coy.
- 58:02There's the snap from center.
- 58:03It's a low pass by Greg Larson taken on about the 43-yard line by number 47 for the Chicago Bears.
- 58:13And there is a marker on the play.
- 58:15Again, what I think we're going to call unnecessary roughness at that time.
- 58:19On the New York Giants, they piled in on that receiver as he was kicking the football,
- 58:24so the Giants are eager certainly to get back these boys down,
- 58:28but if they're over eager, it's going to cost them.
- 58:30That's the second penalty against the New York Giants, second 15-yard penalty.
- 58:34The Bears now are in excellent position.
- 58:36They're on the 20-yard line in real good field position,
- 58:39but the Giants defensive team has prevented them from scoring.
- 58:42Let's see if they can do it again.
- 58:44So the ball is on the 20-yard line of the New York Giants.
- 58:47Johnny Morris caught that punt off the toe of Ernie Coy.
- 58:52Contenta takes the snap from center. He hands the ball off the stairs.
- 58:55There is a attempt to sweep.
- 58:56He's forced out of bounds over on the far side of the field by left cornerback Scott Eaton,
- 59:01who is back in the Giants lineup and doing a great job for the New York Giants against these Chicago Bears,
- 59:06particularly against Gale Sayers, Dick.
- 59:08Right, Woody.
- 59:09On the entire line, though, also I'd like to point out that they're pursuing Gale Sayers just as much as Avery, Costello, and Twain.
- 59:16That whole line, Condon, Lertremer, Moran, Katavich, they were right down there step-to-step with Gale Sayers.
- 59:21So they are pursuing and they're doing an excellent job.
- 59:24There was a loss of about a yard, makes it second and 11.
- 59:26Larry Rake-Straw goes in the ballgame at quarterback, replacing Jack Conkennen.
- 59:31There is the snap to Rake-Straw.
- 59:35The ball handed off to Sayers. Sayers moves into the near side of the line and he is stopped by Ken Avery.
- 59:42Rake-Straw, the quarterback, took the snap from center, handed it off to Sayers.
- 59:46Sayers attempted a slant to the near side of the line and he is brought down and I believe there's a loss on the play, Dick.
- 59:53Right, another loss, Woody, and once again it's the pursuit of that line, that defensive line of the Giants.
- 59:59Condon, Lertremer, Moran, Katavich, they're coming right down, giving them no running room, no room to cut back,
- 1:00:05and fine play that time by Avery who knocked the Rayball right down and enabled him to get in and make the tackle on Sayers.
- 1:00:12And he pulled him right down.
- 1:00:13Jimmy Johns replaces Johnny Morris as flankerback.
- 1:00:16He is the man who carried on that reverse.
- 1:00:18Rake-Straw fakes the handoff. There's a pass over to the far side of the field to number 29, Ronnie Boren.
- 1:00:23Rake-Straw takes it in.
- 1:00:29Rake-Straw on a play-action sequence.
- 1:00:32Found Ronnie Boren over on the far side of the field.
- 1:00:35Boren caught the pass and carried him along the far sideline for the touchdown.
- 1:00:39Right, Woody, what happened actually, Ronnie Boren, he's a smart veteran, he lost himself in the Giants secondary back there.
- 1:00:47Actually, his responsibility had to be by one of the Giants linebackers, they lost him as Condon went to run with the football,
- 1:00:53and he sprinted out into the right flat all by himself.
- 1:00:56Three plays that time, 20 yards, three plays, touchdown.
- 1:01:00There's the extra point, folks, it is good, and so it's seven for the Chicago Bears, seven for the New York Giants,
- 1:01:06five minutes and 52 seconds of playing time remaining in the first half.
- 1:01:10We'll have more New York Giants football in just 60 seconds.
- 1:01:16So, just three plays from the Giants 20-yard line.
- 1:01:18The Chicago Bears are on the scoreboard.
- 1:01:20It's tied now, seven to seven, seven for the Bears, seven for the Giants, the kickoff and Woody Erdman.
- 1:01:24An end over end kick that heads over to the far side of the field.
- 1:01:28Lerczema takes it, carries it back past the 20-yard line up to about the 25-yard line, just shy of the 25-yard line,
- 1:01:37and it is first and 10 for the New York Giants, just shy of their own 25-yard line.
- 1:01:42We have five minutes and 42 seconds of playing time remaining in the first half of the football game.
- 1:01:47Seven to seven, the Giants scored in the first period, and the Chicago Bears have just scored.
- 1:01:52Homer Jones out on the far side, Joe Schaffner flanked on the near side.
- 1:01:57There is a snap from center, the ball handed off to Triplet, Triplet into the near side of the line.
- 1:02:03He picks up about a yard on the play, and he's stopped there by Richie Fettibone and Dick Putkus.
- 1:02:08Putkus, the middle linebacker for the Bears, and Fettibone, strong safetyman.
- 1:02:14There's a pick up of about a yard, makes it second and about nine.
- 1:02:20Joe Taylor goes in the ball game, replacing Jim Purnell, and so the Chicago Bears are back in the use of five defensive halfbacks.
- 1:02:28Schaffner on the near side, Homer Jones had split end, moved in on the far side, the tight end is Aaron Thomas.
- 1:02:33Tuckenden takes the handoff. The ball is knocked out of his hand and hitter, something by Frank Cornish.
- 1:02:40Tuckenden actually had his arm hit as he passed the ball, and as the ball bobbled in the air, Frank Cornish tucked it in,
- 1:02:51and the Chicago Bears are now in possession of the football on the New York Giants' 19-yard line.
- 1:02:58All right, Woody, and as he was trying to throw the ball, he was trying to hit Bill Trippett, who was straightening up the middle of the field.
- 1:03:03He had his man beaten, and that's the linebacker who was trying to cover him that time, but he had him beaten,
- 1:03:08and as Tuckenden went to release it, of course, he fell right into the arms of Cornish.
- 1:03:13Okay, Dicklin, Gordon, split on the far side, Morris, flanked on the near side.
- 1:03:18There's the step to Rake draw, Rake draw hands off the ball, and it's carried into the near side of the line by Gail Stairs.
- 1:03:25Gail Stairs on tremendous second effort.
- 1:03:28After bouncing off the near side of the New York Giants' line, carried the Giants with him for several additional yards.
- 1:03:37Spider Lockhart finally made the tackle.
- 1:03:41Gail Stairs, 6 feet tall, 198, and one of the truly great players in the National Football League.
- 1:03:47There's a penalty down there on the field, however.
- 1:03:50Offside's Woody against the Bears. They were a little late at that time themselves, and one of the boys were offside.
- 1:03:56The nullify is a fine effort by Gail Stairs, but you know him, he'll come right back and do the same thing again.
- 1:04:02Five-yard penalty against the Chicago Bears, as Dicklin just told you.
- 1:04:07Number 47, Johnny Morris, back in the ballgame. He's flanked out on the far side.
- 1:04:11On the near side, Dick Gordon has split in. The ball handed off to Brian Piccolo.
- 1:04:16Piccolo hits the far side of the New York Giants' line, carries the ball to about the 20 or 21-yard line.
- 1:04:22Piccolo replaced Stairs in the lineup in the backfield for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:04:27The way they've been sweeping these ends and coming, and the giant linebackers end the halfback coming up to meet it very well,
- 1:04:34they do have, as we pointed out before the ballgame, they do have the ability to throw that pass,
- 1:04:38and we might see that option pass in one of these downs now.
- 1:04:42So it's second and 12. Second and 12 Chicago, Jimmy Jones replaces Austin Denney as tight end for the Bears.
- 1:04:49Rake Straw calling the signals. He fades into the pocket. There is a pass to the near side, and it is good.
- 1:04:56Completed to Jimmy Jones. Jones, who just entered the ballgame, replacing Austin Denney, as we mentioned,
- 1:05:02was on the near side of the field. Rake Straw was being pulled down, and as he was being pulled down,
- 1:05:07he passed to the near side of the field. Now they're going to call for a measurement.
- 1:05:13That's close to a first down. They're going to call for a measurement.
- 1:05:20And so that ball is on about the 7-yard line. The first down, first down, Chicago.
- 1:05:27First and goal to go. Seven to seven, it's all tied up.
- 1:05:32The Giants scored in the first quarter. The Chicago Bears have scored once in the second period,
- 1:05:37and the Giants, having had an interception, the ball is on the 8-yard line.
- 1:05:41An interception has given the Bears possession of the football, and they are now knocking on the scoring door.
- 1:05:50Rake Straw calling the signals for the Bears. Takes the stop from center.
- 1:05:54Hands the ball off. It's carried into the line by Sayers, back in the ballgame.
- 1:05:58He's picked up a couple, and he's dropped on about the 5 by Spiderlock Hard and Kenny Bree.
- 1:06:04So it's second and goal to go for the Bears. Seven to seven, it's all tied up.
- 1:06:09Two minutes and 48 seconds of playing time remaining in the first half of this contest.
- 1:06:16Second and six, the ball on the 6. Second and six, two minutes and 35 seconds of playing time remaining.
- 1:06:22Out of the huddle, up to the line of scrimmage, the Chicago Bears.
- 1:06:25Number 45, Dick Gordon, split on the far side.
- 1:06:28Number 47, Johnny Morris, flanked out on the near side.
- 1:06:31The running back, Sayers and Ron Bull. Rake Straw calling the signals.
- 1:06:35There's the stop from center. The ball handed off to Sayers.
- 1:06:38Sayers tries to slant into the near side of the line, and he has stopped on about the line of scrimmage
- 1:06:43by Spiderlock Hard and Vince Costello. So it will be third and six. No game. Third and six.
- 1:06:50And the New York Giants have been able to put on tremendous stands against the onrushes of Gale, Sayers,
- 1:06:57and Ron Bull so far in this football game.
- 1:07:00So there's a timeout here at Wrigley Field with a score, the New York Giants seven and the Chicago Bears seven.
- 1:07:08Here at Wrigley Field in Chicago, the Chicago Bears knocking on the door of the Giants goal line once again.
- 1:07:13The ball is on the six yard line. It is third down and goal to go with a minute and 58 seconds remaining
- 1:07:18in the first half of the ball game. The score tied at the moment.
- 1:07:21New York Giants seven and the Chicago Bears seven. The Bears come out of their huddle here to tell you about the action.
- 1:07:26Woody Erdman, Morris planks out on the far side. Gordon is on the near side.
- 1:07:31Number 87, Obradovich, is on the near side. He has replaced Nick Gordon.
- 1:07:37Obradovich, a defensive lineman, in there to supply some blocking.
- 1:07:41There's a pass in the end zone for Johnny Horace. Horace came over from his position on the far side of the field,
- 1:07:50went into the end zone on a 45 degree angle, and as he went under the goal post,
- 1:07:55Rick Saw hit him and hit him good on the line. He didn't even have to change his side.
- 1:08:00No, and that's where he's real fine down there Woody. He's very dangerous on those short passes.
- 1:08:04A quick down and in. Rick Saw just stepped back around three steps and threw it right in there.
- 1:08:09He threw a perfect pass and he had to start eating deep.
- 1:08:12Touchdown Chicago Bears. And now the try for the extra point. There's the hole, the post, and it's good.
- 1:08:19And so it is. 14 for the Chicago Bears, 7 for the New York Giants.
- 1:08:24There's a pause in the action here at Wrigley Field in Chicago, and we will have more New York Giants football in just 30 seconds.
- 1:08:32Wrigley Field in Chicago, the kickoff by Percival, the reception by Randy Minier.
- 1:08:39Minier carries it up the near side of the field up to about the 25 yard line, and it will be first and 10 for the New York Giants on their own 25.
- 1:08:49We have a minute and 45 seconds of playing time remaining in the first half.
- 1:08:53Right, and this fair defense is really stiffening Woody. In the second quarter, the Giants have not had a first down.
- 1:08:59Out of the huddle up to the line, it's coming to the New York Giants. Shopped a flank on the far side.
- 1:09:03Homer Jones split on the near side. A long pass intended for Aaron Thomas off his fingertips. Incomplete.
- 1:09:10So the clock stops, and we have a minute and 29 seconds of playing time remaining in the first half.
- 1:09:16Other scores. San Francisco 14, Washington 3, second period.
- 1:09:21Second period, Baltimore 35, Atlanta nothing. First quarter, Dallas 7, New Orleans 7.
- 1:09:26First quarter, Pittsburgh nothing, St. Louis nothing.
- 1:09:29One minute and 29 seconds of playing time remaining in the second quarter.
- 1:09:33The ball on the 25 yard line. The New York Giants in possession.
- 1:09:37Chicago is leading. They've scored 14 points in the second quarter. The Giants scored seven in the first period.
- 1:09:43Over the ball at center is Greg Larson. There's the snap to Tarkin. Tarkin fakes the handoff. Rolls off to the far side.
- 1:09:50A pass taken by Frank Cornich. Cornich races along the far sideline and he is out of bounds.
- 1:09:58Frank Cornich actually looked like he was the intended receiver.
- 1:10:04In order to stop targeting, what they're doing, they're not rushing it back there. They're letting Cornich just stay back in the short flat zone on the outside.
- 1:10:11The targeting went in and threw the football. Cornich stuck his right hand out and caught that ball. One hand.
- 1:10:16Just a great catch by Lyman. It's really amazing. It puts the Bears right in a fantastic position.
- 1:10:23So it is now first and 10 for Chicago as they have another scoring opportunity with a minute and 19 seconds of playing time remaining in the first half.
- 1:10:30Great draw. A pass intended in the end zone for number 45 Dick Gordon. Bill Swain almost intercepted it.
- 1:10:37He couldn't hold onto it, however, and he's not pleased with himself for having been unable to hold onto that football.
- 1:10:44But it's incomplete and so the ball is brought back now to the 15 yard line and it will be second and 10 for Chicago on the Giants that make it the 14.
- 1:10:55Right, Woody. Down here once again a very valuable receiver for the Chicago Bears and that would have to be Johnny Morris and that's a boy we'll have to really keep our eyes on.
- 1:11:05Johnny Morris, the flanker back. Number 29 Ron Bull out on the wing now as he's moved out.
- 1:11:10The split end is Dick Gordon. Great draw. He's the quarterback. He gives the ball to Serr. Serr on a sweep around the near end.
- 1:11:16There's a marker and Serr is brought down on about the 10 yard line by Clarence Child. A sweep by Gail Serr.
- 1:11:24There is a marker on the field, however. And a discussion down there.
- 1:11:3214 to 7. The Chicago Bears are leading the New York Giants and the Bears are in possession of the football. The second interception of a Tarkin and pass by Frank Cornish.
- 1:11:45As for the second time in this period, given the football to the Chicago Bears and made it available to them deep in Giants territory.
- 1:11:55The ball is on about the 10 yard line on the Giants' 10. It's a first and goal to go situation with the ball resting on the shy side of the 10.
- 1:12:09Make it first and nine. Chicago in possession of the football. Great draw calling the signals.
- 1:12:15The quarterback for Chicago takes the snap from center, hands it off to Serr. Serr is on the plant to the far side of the line. Carries it down to just shy of the goal line.
- 1:12:25Wendell Harris and Bob Lertz-Semma team up. Bob Lertz-Semma defensive tackle on the right side of the line. And Wendell Harris strong safety.
- 1:12:36Well I said, very famous play for the Chicago Bears. It's an off tackle play and Gale Sayers carrying and they had fine blocking that time. They go and get stuff down there. They give the ball to the Bears.
- 1:12:46It has the power, what if you break these tackles. He did carry it in there very, very neatly and with a lot of power, brought it right to the three yard line.
- 1:12:55It puts the Bears out second down three yards to go. A minute and seven seconds on the clock. They have plenty of time to score.
- 1:13:02One minute and seven seconds of playing time remaining in the first half of this game and the Bears are leading 14 to 7.
- 1:13:08Next week the Giants are at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Yankee Stadium. One minute and seven seconds of playing time remaining in the second quarter.
- 1:13:17The Bears are in possession as Dick Lynch has told you. It is second and goal to go with a ball on the three yard line.
- 1:13:25The forward wall now for the Chicago Bears. Obradovich has gone into the ball game replacing Dick Gordon.
- 1:13:32Randy Jackson, Mike Rayball, Mike Piles, Jim Padel, Bob Pickens and Austin Denny.
- 1:13:42You might wonder why they bring in Obradovich. It is the same reason why the Giants bring in Bob Crespino. Bob is big and strong and he can block very well. Obradovich weighs about 270 pounds and he can block very well also.
- 1:13:56That is why they put him in there at the tight end position. Just to block.
- 1:14:00As they move out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage, Obradovich is on the near side. He has moved in replacing Dick Gordon.
- 1:14:07The back to the Bears and Ron Ball. Rake Straw calling the signal. The ball is on the three yard line.
- 1:14:12There is the snap and the handoff to the Bears. The Bears carries it in the near side of the line. I believe he is stopped shy of the goal line.
- 1:14:20He carries it to about the one yard line.
- 1:14:23And that time Woody they went right behind Obradovich who just bowled in right in on Glenn Condren in the scrimmage.
- 1:14:30But they were strong enough to withstand that great pressure and they held him short of the goal line. But they are right down on the one yard line now.
- 1:14:38Third and one for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:14:42Time out New York Giants. It is third and one for the Chicago Bears. We have 38 seconds of playing time remaining in the first half.
- 1:14:50And while we have time out on the field, time ends at high.
- 1:14:54Okay Woody I just want to remind our listeners again that they may win many valuable prizes we will be giving away starting next week here on our Giants Radio Network.

- 1:15:44Get your card or letter in the mail tonight.
- 1:15:46Time is back in. Here to tell you about the crucial player with the ball on the one yard line of the Giants, Woody Erdman.
- 1:15:52Spider-Lock hardly the ball game he limped off and he is replaced by Freeman White.
- 1:15:56Johnny Morris is flanked out on the far side.
- 1:15:59Calling the signal, Larry Rake draw. There's the snap, the dive, it's a touchdown.
- 1:16:05Touchdown Chicago Bears.
- 1:16:08They have had quite a second quarter.
- 1:16:12So far 20 points scored by the Bears in this second period.
- 1:16:17Right and it was all due to the effort of that Chicago Bears defensive team and in particular Frank Cornish who's having himself a real fine day here today.
- 1:16:26Two interceptions by Frank Cornish have led to two touchdowns by the Chicago Bears.
- 1:16:32Max Percival will try for the extra points.
- 1:16:35Over the ball at center is Mike Pyle. There's the snap from center, the hold.
- 1:16:39It is no good. It is wide to the near side and so the score remains 20 for the Chicago Bears, 7 for the New York Giants.
- 1:16:49We have 35 seconds of playing time remaining in the second quarter.
- 1:16:54All right Woody, let's check our scoreboard now as the Bears get ready to kick off to the Giants.
- 1:16:59At the end of the first half Baltimore is way out in front of Atlanta by a score of 35 to nothing.
- 1:17:04Another halftime score the San Francisco 49ers 14 to Washington Redskins 3.
- 1:17:10At the end of a period Dallas and New Orleans are tied at 7 to 7 and at the end of the period of the game between Pittsburgh and St. Louis there is no score.
- 1:17:18And here at Wrigley Field in Chicago in what Woody Yardman has just told you is a big second quarter for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:17:24They've scored 20 points in the quarter to lead the New York Giants with just 35 seconds to go in the first half to score the Bears 20 and the Giants 7.
- 1:17:33Now here's first before kicking off for the Bears here to tell you about it Woody Yardman.
- 1:17:37There is the boot, it's a high end over end kick that is taken by Clarence Childs.
- 1:17:42It picks up blocking, races up the middle of the field, gets past the 20 up to about the 25 yard line and it will be first and 10 for the New York Giants on their own 25 yard line.
- 1:17:53We have 31 seconds of playing time remaining in the first half.
- 1:17:57The Chicago Bears have scored 20 points in the second quarter, they lead 20 to 7.
- 1:18:03And so the New York Giants with 20 seconds remaining of this first half, step the ball back to Tarkin and Tarkin and a long pass to Homer Jones out of bounds incomplete.
- 1:18:13And so it stops the clock and 16 seconds remain on the scoreboard.
- 1:18:19And he's trying to hit Homer then and once again they have two men, two very fast men Taylor and Gentry right on Homer.
- 1:18:28And they're playing them inside and outside and short and long.
- 1:18:31So it's going to be tough to hit Homer Jones, two very very fast men who can probably match him with speed and it's going to be tough to get the ball to Homer Jones.
- 1:18:40And I think Jeff Rannell will have to look to Aaron Thomas or Del Schaffner if he's going to try to get a reception here.
- 1:18:47Tarkin then takes the staff from center. There is a pass intended for Triplet.
- 1:18:51It falls out of his hands, actually goes through his hands.
- 1:18:55Pass intended for Triplet.
- 1:18:58Triplet short pass over the line, reached his arms out, tried to get his hands on the football, could not hold it.
- 1:19:05It was thrown hard by Tarkin then and went right through.
- 1:19:09Triplet's hands incomplete. Third and tenth. Third and tenth.
- 1:19:14We have 12 seconds of playing time remaining on the clock and the Giants are down by 13 points, 20 to 7.
- 1:19:21Schaffner planks on the near side. Homer Jones split on the far side. The tight end is Aaron Thomas.
- 1:19:26Tarkin then takes the staff from center, hands it off to Triplet. Triplet on the sweep around the near end gets to the 35 and he's dropped there by Richie Pettibone, the strong safetyman, and Dick Butkus, the middle linebacker for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:19:40So we have five seconds of playing time remaining on the clock. Time for one more play and it's 20 to 7. Chicago out front.
- 1:19:50First and tenth for the New York Giants on their own 35 yard line. Chicago leading 20 to 7.
- 1:19:58Now this scores second quarter, 35 Baltimore, Atlanta nothing. San Francisco 14, Washington 3.
- 1:20:05No score in the game between Philadelphia and Los Angeles being played on the coast.
- 1:20:09In the first quarter Detroit nothing, Minnesota nothing.
- 1:20:14And now the New York Giants drop at the line of scrimmage. Tarkin then takes the staff from center.
- 1:20:18The ball is handed off, carried toward the far side of the field by Bill Triplet.
- 1:20:23And I believe that is all the time that remains in the first half of the game. That's correct.
- 1:20:30We waited for just a moment because there was a second on the clock, but it was highly evident that the first half was over.
- 1:20:36And so at the completion of the first half of play here at Wrigley Field in Chicago, it is 20 for the Chicago Bears and 7 for the New York Giants.
- 1:20:47Meanwhile I see that the Giants have come back on the field over across the way prior to the start of second half play at Wrigley Field.
- 1:20:55And as we get underway in the second half it's going to be the Giants kicking off to the Bears who already hold the lead of 20 to 7.
- 1:21:03The great cheer here going up is one of the youngsters who had a long kick of about 60 yards.
- 1:21:10So there's a young man there who's going to make a good college football player and probably he also will go on to play professional football.
- 1:21:1920 to 7 the Bears over the Giants here at halftime at Wrigley Field as we're getting near the end of the halftime program,
- 1:21:27which at the moment as we said is being taken up by participants in a punt pass and kick program for the Midwestern area here at Chicago.
- 1:21:37We have just a few seconds now the youngsters are leaving the field and we'll be gunning underway with second half play very, very shortly here at Wrigley Field.
- 1:21:50Well the teams are back on the field for the second half of today's game.
- 1:21:54This half presented by Agway, complete supplier of products for farm and home.
- 1:22:00By Mohawk Airlines now featuring its great travel value, weekends unlimited, and by Lowe's fabulous New Summit Motel in the heart of New York City.
- 1:22:12Remember the Laurel New York Giants football radio broadcasts are heard exclusively in your area on the station to which you're now tuned.
- 1:22:19Follow the Giants that moment away this season at this same spot on your radio dial.
- 1:22:29And as we speak to you here in Chicago, the fans have returned to their seats following refreshment time during the halftime intermission
- 1:22:37and the Bears and Giants pulled back on the field prior to the second half kickoff as we said a moment ago.
- 1:22:43The Giants will be kicking off to the Bears as they begin the third quarter of play with the Bears out in front of the Giants 20 to nothing.
- 1:22:49The Giants in case they joined us late scored the first time they got their hands on the ball, took the opening kickoff and in the 65 yard mark,
- 1:22:56capped the drive with a lateral pass thrown by quarterback Grant Tarkin sent to Darrell Dess who carried the ball into the end zone for the touchdown.
- 1:23:02Volta Lacks conversion to depth was good. The Giants led 7-0 early in the first quarter.
- 1:23:07They moved to within the five yard line of the Bears later on in the period but then the Bears stiffened on their defense and threw three pass interceptions
- 1:23:15which set up these scoring opportunities towards three touchdowns in the second quarter of play and lead the Giants 20 to 7.
- 1:23:22Now Pete Zolgelak is placing the ball on the 40 yard line with the Giants. He'll be kicking off.
- 1:23:29Matt Haggerty, the referee, signals that everything's okay. Here comes Zolgelak, the kick and Woody Erdman.
- 1:23:35It's the short kick that's taken over on the far side of the field back on about the 30 yard line carried along the far side line up to about the 42 or 43 yard line
- 1:23:48by Charlie Brown, defensive back, 6'1", 193 pounds and he is a name familiar to the listeners of our Syracuse University football network.
- 1:23:58He's in his second year with the Chicago Bears. He starred as a defensive back for the Big Orange Syracuse.
- 1:24:05So it is first and 10 for the Chicago Bears and the ball is on their own 43 yard line.
- 1:24:13There's the snap to Rake Straw. Rake Straw hands it off the stairs. There's a sweep around the near end.
- 1:24:17He gets up to the midfield stripe, crosses the midfield stripe and on the near side of the field is brought down on about the 47 yard line.
- 1:24:25There's a marker on the play. Gale Sayers carried that ball on a sweep around the near end.
- 1:24:34He picked up yardage but there is a marker on the play and it looks like a penalty will be stepped off against the Chicago Bears.
- 1:24:41And it looks like a big one, Woody. It's a 15 yard penalty. I don't know exactly what the call is right now.
- 1:24:47The referee did not indicate it. Holding, offensive holding against the Chicago Bears.
- 1:24:53Note also in their backfield, in the Chicago Bear backfield, Rack Schroer is again the quarterback.
- 1:24:59So Jackson Cannon on the early in the second quarter when he was hit by Jim Catcavage is still unable to come back.
- 1:25:05So Rack Schroer is in there as quarterback.
- 1:25:08It is first and 25 as the Chicago Bears are out of the huddle up at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:25:13Calling the signals at quarterback is Larry Rake Straw. There's the snap to Rake Straw. He fades back.
- 1:25:19He's being rushed and he is tripped but regains his footing and gets past the 30 yard line up to about the 33
- 1:25:28where he is down on about the 33 yard line by Vince Costello.
- 1:25:32Glen Condren trips Rake Straw. It looks for a moment as though Rake Straw were going to drop.
- 1:25:38He gained his footing, picked up several yards and was finally down by Vince Costello.
- 1:25:42A pick up of five makes it second and 20.
- 1:25:45Also Woody in the backfield for the New York Giants, by the lock heart is not back on the field and in his place is Freeman White.
- 1:25:54Number 47 Johnny Morris flanked out on the far side. Dick Gordon split on the near side.
- 1:25:59Jimmy Jones has replaced Austin Jenney as the tight end.
- 1:26:02The ball snapped back to Rake Straw. He rolls out, intends to pass along the near sideline for Dick Gordon.
- 1:26:08The pass is overthrown going out of bounds and it is incomplete.
- 1:26:12So that makes it third and 20 for the Bears.
- 1:26:16The ball resting on about their wrong 33 yard line.
- 1:26:1913 minutes and 35 seconds of playing time remaining in the third period.
- 1:26:23It is 20 to 7, the Bears out front.
- 1:26:26Other football scores in the National Football League, 21 for San Francisco, 17 for Washington.
- 1:26:3121 to 17, San Francisco over the skins of Washington.
- 1:26:37Out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage, the Chicago Bears.
- 1:26:40Larry Rake Straw, the quarterback. He has replaced Jackson Cannon.
- 1:26:44Did so on the first half. Over the ball at center is Mike Pyle.
- 1:26:47There's the snap from center to Rake Straw. He fades. He's being rushed by Lurch Semma.
- 1:26:51There is a screen pass over to the far side of the field. It is good.
- 1:26:54Carried out of bounds on about the 40 yard line. Good to Ron Bull.
- 1:26:59Clarence Childs forces him out of bounds over on the far side of the field.
- 1:27:03Ronnie Bull, 6 feet tall, 200 pounds.
- 1:27:06A 6 year veteran.
- 1:27:11And so that makes it fourth down and about 12 to go.
- 1:27:14There was a pick up of 8.
- 1:27:17Ball put on about the 41 yard line.
- 1:27:20And so the Chicago Bears will be forced to punt, fourth and 12.
- 1:27:25Back to do the booting is Bobby Joe Green.
- 1:27:285'11", 175 pounds, an 8 year veteran.
- 1:27:32He has an average in 47 punts of 43.6 yards per punt.
- 1:27:37There is the boot. It was almost blocked.
- 1:27:41It bounds on about the 12 and rolls into the end zone.
- 1:27:47A real punt by Bobby Joe Green. It's bounded on about the 12.
- 1:27:51And the momentum carried the ball into the end zone.
- 1:27:54The Chicago Bears tried to prevent it but could not do so.
- 1:27:58And so it is taken out to the 20 yard line.
- 1:28:01And the Giants will be in possession of the football on their own 20.
- 1:28:05The running back for the New York Giants will be Bill Triplett and Tucker Frederickson
- 1:28:10as they have been during the course of the entire afternoon.
- 1:28:13Homer Jones, a split on the near side.
- 1:28:15Planked out on the far side is Del Schoffner.
- 1:28:18There is a snap to Tuckerman. Tuckerman hands it off to Bill Triplett. Triplett hits the far side of the line.
- 1:28:24And he picks up yardage where he is stopped finally by Richie Pettibone on about the 27 yard line.
- 1:28:31So there is a pick up of seven and makes the second down and about three to go.
- 1:28:36Tuckerman is doing a real fine job according to his plays, Woody, now.
- 1:28:39They have Dick Puckers blitzing an awful lot and he seems to be blitzing to the Giants left side of the line
- 1:28:45and running to his right side so to compensate for his blitz.
- 1:28:49Tuckerman took the snap from center, handed the ball off to Frederickson.
- 1:28:52Moved toward the center of the line. He was stopped at about the line of scrimmage by Frank Cornish.
- 1:28:57So it remains third and about two. Third and two.
- 1:29:03So there was a pick up of the yard on the play. Third and two.
- 1:29:08John Johnson replaces Dick Eby at defensive tackle for the Bears.
- 1:29:14On the far side of the field, Schoffner. He's the flanker back. The split end.
- 1:29:17Homer Jones on the near side. The running back to Triplett and Frederickson.
- 1:29:21There is a pitch out to Frederickson. Frederickson goes off tackle, gets to about the 30 yard line
- 1:29:26and he's dropped over on the far side of the field by Frank Cornish and Doug Buffon.
- 1:29:31Cornish, a defensive tackle. Buffon, the left line backer.
- 1:29:36So the ball is placed on about the 30 yard line.
- 1:29:43And makes it fourth down and about one. Fourth and about one.
- 1:29:51And the Giants are going to go for that first down.
- 1:29:54Yes they are. They're going to go for the first down. The Bears are there ticking the unit.
- 1:29:57The punt return unit is in there but now the regular defense team is in there.
- 1:30:02The New York Giants are out of the huddle up at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:30:05There's the snap from center. The hand to Triplett. Triplett picks up the yard.
- 1:30:08It gets to about the 33 or 34 and he's stopped on the 33 or 34 yard line by the Chicago Bears.
- 1:30:14Enough for a first down. The ball's placed on the shy side of the 34.
- 1:30:19So it's first and 10 New York Giants on their own 34 yard line.
- 1:30:23With a fourth and one situation, Fran Takenden elected to go for it.
- 1:30:28And they picked up more than enough yardage.
- 1:30:31Homer Jones split on the far side. Del Schafter flanked on the near side.
- 1:30:35He fakes the handoff to Fredericksson, does Takenden, gives it to Triplett.
- 1:30:39Triplett hits the near side of the line, gets to about the 40 yard line,
- 1:30:42and he's stopped there by Jim Purnell, the right linebacker, or the Chicago Bears.
- 1:30:47All this faking that you're talking about, what is actually happening out there in the field
- 1:30:51and why they're doing it is to contain Dix Buskis and get him to move one direction
- 1:30:55and come back so they can get the angle block on him.
- 1:30:57And they're running right up the middle and right through his outside.
- 1:31:00The reason they're doing it, the reason it's successful is because of his block.
- 1:31:04Second and six, Giants. Second and four, rather, a pick up of six.
- 1:31:09The ball handed off to Triplett. Triplett fakes the sweep, turns in,
- 1:31:14gets past the 40, up to about the 42, and he's stopped there by Frank Cornish.
- 1:31:19Triplett took a handoff from Takenden, fakes the sweep to the far side,
- 1:31:23moves in, and went into the far side of the line, carried the ball to the 42 yard line.
- 1:31:29So it makes it now third and two for the Giants. Third and two.
- 1:31:34Nine minutes and 55 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter,
- 1:31:37and the Bears are leading 20 to seven.
- 1:31:40Del Schauffner flanked out on the near side. Homer Jones moved in on the far side.
- 1:31:43The ball given to Fredrickson. Fredrickson into the middle, gets past the 45,
- 1:31:47up to about the 46 yard line, and that will be enough for a first down for the Giants.
- 1:31:51So it will be first and ten for the Giants on their own 46 yard line.
- 1:31:56Tucker Fredrickson tearing on that pass play for the Giants.
- 1:32:00Nine minutes and 25 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:32:05Out of the huddle, up to the line of scrimmage, the Giants.
- 1:32:07Schauffner flanked out on the far side. Homer Jones flicked to the near side.
- 1:32:10Aaron Thomas is the tight end. Bill Triplett and Tucker Fredrickson are the running backs.
- 1:32:14Greg Larson the center. He steps it back to Takenden. Takenden gives the ball to Fredrickson.
- 1:32:19Fredrickson hits the near side of the line, gets to about the line of scrimmage,
- 1:32:22and he's stopped there by Jim Purnell and Dick Budkis.
- 1:32:27No game makes it second and ten. Eight minutes and 55 seconds of playing time remaining in the third period.
- 1:32:34The Bears now moving into the use of five defensive halfbacks as Joe Taylor replaces Jim Purnell.
- 1:32:40So the defensive halfbacks are Gentry, Rosie Taylor, Joe Taylor, Richie Pettibone, and Benny McCray.
- 1:32:46As the New York Giants move out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage,
- 1:32:49Schauffner is flanked out on the far side. Homer Jones on the near side.
- 1:32:52Takenden takes the snap from center, fakes a hand off to Fredrickson.
- 1:32:55Looks for a receiver. His receivers are covered.
- 1:32:57There is a long pass intended downfield for Homer Jones over on the far side of the field.
- 1:33:02It is incomplete. He was covered by Ed O'Bradovich.
- 1:33:10Incomplete, a pass intended for Homer Jones from Fran Takenden.
- 1:33:19And so the ball is brought back now to the 46-yard line.
- 1:33:23Eight minutes and 25 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:33:28Well, actually what's happening, Woody, with those two speed boys on Homer Jones,
- 1:33:32that time as Homer cut across the middle of the field, Rosie Taylor picked him up,
- 1:33:37and it was man to man and speed to speed, so the Giants are sort of like playing
- 1:33:41into the hands of the Chicago Bears.
- 1:33:43There's the snap to Takenden, Takenden fakes a pass over to the far side of the field,
- 1:33:47intended over there for Aaron Thomas. Incomplete.
- 1:33:51He was covered by Rosie Taylor.
- 1:33:55And so it's fourth and ten for the Giants, and they will be forced to punt.
- 1:34:02Fourth and ten. Eight minutes and 20 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter,
- 1:34:08and the Bears are leading 20 to 7.
- 1:34:11As Ernie Coy comes into the football game, and he will do the punting for the Giants.
- 1:34:16Out of the huddle, up the line has come in the Giants.
- 1:34:21Ernie Coy in punt position. Gale Stairs and Dick Gordon are back.
- 1:34:26There's the boat. It's a high spiral.
- 1:34:30Gordon fakes a move under the football and then steps away from it,
- 1:34:36and the ball bounds into the end zone.
- 1:34:38Some real fast thinking by Dick Gordon prevented his catching the ball
- 1:34:42and being tackled on the spot. He allowed the ball to roll into the end zone,
- 1:34:46and that punt was good for 54 yards.
- 1:34:49And so the Bears will take over possession of the football on their own 20 yard line.
- 1:34:54The score here at Wrigley Field in Chicago, the New York Giants 7,
- 1:34:59the Chicago Bears 20. More New York Giants football in just 60 seconds.
- 1:35:04In the United States, most people have things pretty good.
- 1:35:11Life is full of promise. But even here there are those who somehow miss out,
- 1:35:17who have nothing, and whose prospects for tomorrow are more of the same.
- 1:35:22The reasons are complex, and they're absolutely overwhelming for the people involved.
- 1:35:28You grow up in a slum or maybe an Indian reservation,
- 1:35:32and words like hope and opportunity might as well be in some other language.
- 1:35:37There is no hope, no opportunity, as far as they're concerned.
- 1:35:42But when VISTA volunteers come, something happens, something's better,
- 1:35:48something called hope, something called opportunity.
- 1:35:54Help make it happen, right to VISTA, Box B, Washington, D.C.
- 1:36:02So the Giants ran out of gas in their first drive of the second half here at Chicago.
- 1:36:06The Bears put the ball and play in their own 20. Here again is Woody Erdman.
- 1:36:10Johnny Morris flanks out on the near side. Over on the far side is split end Dick Gordon.
- 1:36:15Larry Rake's draw, calling the signal. Bakes the snap from center.
- 1:36:18There is a long pass. Downfield, extended for number 80, Jimmy Jones, who is the tight end.
- 1:36:24Incomplete. It was off Jimmy Jones' fingertips.
- 1:36:27He was covered by Freeman White, who was in there at free safety,
- 1:36:31having replaced Spider Lockhart, who left the game earlier as a result of an injury.
- 1:36:37Freeman White covering Jimmy Jones. Jimmy Jones could not hold onto the football.
- 1:36:43It went right off his fingertips. Incomplete. Makes it second and ten.
- 1:36:47Second and ten for the Bears on their own 20 yard line.
- 1:36:52Jimmy Jones leaves the ball game and Austin Denny comes in to replace him as tight end.
- 1:36:57As they move out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage,
- 1:36:59Gordon is split to the near side and Morris is flanked over to the far side.
- 1:37:04The running backs are Gale Sayers and Ron Bull. The quarterback is Larry Rake's draw.
- 1:37:09There's the snap to Rake's draw. He hands it off.
- 1:37:12The ball is carried into the far side of the line by Ron Bull and the tackle is made there by Glenn Condren and Clarence Childs.
- 1:37:21Twenty to seven. The Chicago Bears are leading the New York Giants.
- 1:37:25We have seven minutes and 45 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter of this contest.
- 1:37:31Other scores for Baltimore, 42 for Atlanta, seven, third period.
- 1:37:38Second quarter score, Dallas 14, New Orleans seven, second period, Pittsburgh seven, St. Louis seven.
- 1:37:44Third and ten for the Chicago Bears as they move up to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:37:49Rake's draw takes the snap from center. He fades and as he tries to release the ball,
- 1:37:55his arm was caught and the ball went straight down and so it is an incomplete forward pass.
- 1:38:01Actually they caught hold of his passing arm, Dick.
- 1:38:03Right, Woody, it was a fine run there by Lurch Semmer and Moran and actually the Moran was the one that had him knock the football down to the ground.
- 1:38:11So the Giants now are in good position. They're in good field position and they need that.
- 1:38:15They needed that time to stop the Chicago Bear offense.
- 1:38:18This will put the ball somewhere around maybe the 50 yard line or the midfield strike and maybe the Giants can take it on in for now.
- 1:38:25But this is the first time in a long while where the Giants will be in good field position.
- 1:38:30The Bears now in upon formation. Randy Minier and Wendell Harris are deep for the Giants.
- 1:38:37Over the ball at center, Mike Pyle for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:38:40There's the snap from center, the boot and it's a long spiral.
- 1:38:44It goes over the head of Wendell Harris, rolls back to the 15 yard statement and he drops on the 10 yard line.
- 1:38:53The official scamp is put on the 12. That was a 70 yard boot.
- 1:38:57As far as the Chicago Bears were concerned, 70 yards.
- 1:39:01Yes, Woody, and there goes that great giant field position I was talking about.
- 1:39:05Well, that boy can really kick the football green. That's all he does. He just kicks. He just punts.
- 1:39:09Just like Don Turner for the Green Bay Packers only kicks field goals now and extra points.
- 1:39:14He got his leg into that. Of course the wind is at his back. It's in his favor.
- 1:39:18But that still is a fine kick.
- 1:39:20And so it's first and 10 for the Giants with the ball resting on their own 13 yard line.
- 1:39:27The Giants out of the huddle up at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:39:29Tarkin and calling the signals. Triplett and Frederiksen are the running backs.
- 1:39:32Tarkin then takes the snap from center, gives the ball off to Triplett.
- 1:39:35Triplett hits the middle of the line. He gets to about the 14.
- 1:39:38And he's tough to the 14 yard line by right line backer Jim Purnell.
- 1:39:43And so the ball is on the 14 yard line. That's a pick up of about a yard.
- 1:39:47And that will make it second and nine.
- 1:39:50Second and nine for the Giants.
- 1:39:52We have six minutes and 25 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:39:57As the Giants move out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage,
- 1:39:59Homer Jones is split to the far side and Del Schopner is flanked to the near side.
- 1:40:03There's the snap to Tarkin and Tarkin then a long pass to Aaron Thomas.
- 1:40:07Thomas takes it on the 20, turns in, turns around, gets to about the 21,
- 1:40:12and he's dropped on the 21 yard line by number 51 Dick Butchett.
- 1:40:16The middle line backer for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:40:20Butchett's assisted by Ricky Pettibone.
- 1:40:23Let me just point out what Butchett had to do that time.
- 1:40:25When he did get over there and stop that play.
- 1:40:28Actually Pettibone was covering Thomas man to man.
- 1:40:31As he was talking into that ball, it was right next to the sideline, to the left sideline.
- 1:40:35Butchett dropped back in the middle.
- 1:40:37Then as he was throwing the ball, raced over there and made the tackle on the sideline.
- 1:40:41Quite an athlete.
- 1:40:43The Giants now after a completion of an eight yard pass from Tarkin into Aaron Thomas
- 1:40:50have a third and two situation.
- 1:40:52The ball handed off to Triplett.
- 1:40:54Triplett stopped at the line of scrimmage by Ed Obradovich.
- 1:40:57Triplett may have picked up a yard on the play.
- 1:41:00Obradovich is the less defensive end for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:41:05He was assisted by Doug Spafoon.
- 1:41:09Though there was a pick up of about a yard and that will make it fourth and one for the Giants
- 1:41:13as they go into a punt formation.
- 1:41:15Ernie Coy comes onto the field for the Giants.
- 1:41:19It is fourth and one.
- 1:41:20We have five minutes of playing time remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:41:25As you hear in the background, the attendance is 46,200 plus.
- 1:41:32There is the boot by Ernie Coy.
- 1:41:34It's a spiral call for, a fair catch call for by number 45.
- 1:41:38Dick Gordon.
- 1:41:40And there is a marker on the play.
- 1:41:43That punt was good for 39 yards.
- 1:41:44There is a marker on the play at about the midfield stripe.
- 1:41:50Twenty to seven.
- 1:41:51The Chicago Bears are leading the New York Giants.
- 1:41:54We have four minutes and 43 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter of this contest.
- 1:42:00A 15 yard penalty stepped off against the Chicago Bears.
- 1:42:03They take the ball back to their own 25 yard line.
- 1:42:09Clipping penalty called against the Chicago Bears.
- 1:42:11Put the ball back on their own 25.
- 1:42:14They're leading by 13 points.
- 1:42:16We have four minutes and 43 seconds of playing time remaining.
- 1:42:22We have a timeout on the field and a time in for Ted Hod.
- 1:42:27Okay, well we have an opportunity if we may.
- 1:42:29I'd like to mention that we have had literally hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of letters and cards
- 1:42:36written in by our listeners applying for membership in our honorary sports casters club.
- 1:42:42And it's very gratifying and we do appreciate it.
- 1:42:44Thank you.
- 1:42:45All right, Woody.
- 1:42:46So there's a pause in the action here at Chicago.
- 1:42:49The score, Chicago 20 and the New York Giants 7.
- 1:42:52More Giants football in just 30 seconds.
- 1:42:56Your man, Robert Otto, Phi Beta Kappa, is taking Army ROTC.
- 1:43:04Army ROTC has been paying Bob $40 a month during his junior and senior years of college.
- 1:43:10But money isn't the big reward Army ROTC offers Bob.
- 1:43:14It's the experience he's getting in organizing and leading men.
- 1:43:19If you're a high school senior, ask your guidance counselor about Army ROTC.
- 1:43:25The Bears will be putting the ball in play in their own territory.
- 1:43:30And here to tell you about it once again, the network voice of the New York Giants, Woody Erdman.
- 1:43:36So it's first and 10, Chicago, on their own 25-yard line.
- 1:43:41Larry Rake Straw is the quarterback for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:43:45He replaced Jackson Cannon earlier during the course of the afternoon.
- 1:43:48A handoff to Sears.
- 1:43:49Sears into the line.
- 1:43:50He stops at the line that's coming by Bob Lurtz-Summer.
- 1:43:53Defensive tackle for the Giants.
- 1:43:56By and large, Dick Lynch, the front four for the Giants have done quite a nice job this afternoon.
- 1:44:03Right, they've contained them very well.
- 1:44:05They've contained Sears and Ronnie Bull.
- 1:44:08The big asset in the ball game, those parts, has been that bear defense,
- 1:44:13which has put the Bears in excellent field position both times inside the 9-20 on interception.
- 1:44:20The Bears now up at the line of scrimmage, number 47, Johnny Morris flanked out on the far side.
- 1:44:24Dick Gordon split on the near side.
- 1:44:26There's a snap to Rake Straw.
- 1:44:27Rake Straw fades into the pocket.
- 1:44:29A pass complete.
- 1:44:30Incomplete.
- 1:44:32Gale Sears had that ball on about the 40-yard line and didn't hold it long enough, dropped it.
- 1:44:37And so it's an incompleted forward pass intended from Rake Straw for Gale Sears.
- 1:44:42Incomplete.
- 1:44:43While we have an opportunity, let's pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:44:47This is the New York Giants radio network.
- 1:44:49This is the bright sound in radio, WGY, a General Electric Broadcasting Company station at 810 on your dial in Schenectady, New York.
- 1:45:00Wrigley Field in Chicago.
- 1:45:02The Chicago Bears and the New York Giants, along with Dick Lynch and Dead Hard.
- 1:45:06This is Woody Erdman.
- 1:45:07There is the snap to Rake Straw.
- 1:45:09He fades, steps up into the pocket, decides to run with a football, goes up the middle,
- 1:45:14gets past the 30 up to about the 31 or 32, and he's dropped there by Jim Moran.
- 1:45:22We have 3 minutes and 40 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter, and the Bears are leading 20 to 7.
- 1:45:29That makes it fourth and about three to go.
- 1:45:32Fourth and three.
- 1:45:35This time I notice Wendell Harris and Randy Minamir back a little deeper than they were the last time, Woody, because this Green has really been having himself a fine afternoon punting.
- 1:45:47Bobby Joel Green, punting with his back to the wind.
- 1:45:51He's an eight-year veteran and real capable.
- 1:45:55The snap from center is low.
- 1:45:57Green gets the putt away, and it's a long one.
- 1:45:59It's a beaut taken by Wendell Harris on the 10.
- 1:46:02He gets up to about the 11, and he is stopped on the 11-yard line.
- 1:46:06He fumbles the football on about the 10.
- 1:46:10I believe he was down, however.
- 1:46:12There is a marker on the play, and we're having some real rough and tumble football down there on about the 8-yard line.
- 1:46:21Wendell Harris made an over-the-shoulder attack of that punt.
- 1:46:26He tried to move the football upfield.
- 1:46:28Actually, Dick, I think, had he let it go, it would have rolled into the end zone.
- 1:46:32Well, I don't know what he had to stop the decision to make.
- 1:46:35It was very close, and he let it go.
- 1:46:38At least he could have lost the 10 yards, but not a particular play down there where they had a little rough stuff, a little fighting going on.
- 1:46:44Wendell Harris fumbled the ball, but the ball was ruled dead as he caught it, and the ball was ruled dead right away.
- 1:46:50There's two offsetting penalties.
- 1:46:51They're going to give the ball to the Giants on the 10-yard line, first and then.
- 1:46:56And so the New York Giants, as Dick Lynch has told you, are in possession of the football, and the ball is placed officially now on the 11-yard line.
- 1:47:05And once again, it's Bobby Joe Green's kicks that are really keeping the pressure on the giant offense.
- 1:47:10He has them, once again, last time he booted the ball, they had the ball on the 12-yard line.
- 1:47:15This time they're getting the ball on the 11-yard line.
- 1:47:17Both times they were deep in the Bay of Territory, but his kick got him out of it, and that's the value of having a real fine kicker.
- 1:47:23He can really put the pressure on an offensive team.
- 1:47:26Schauffner playing to the near side, Homer Jones split to the far side.
- 1:47:29He's pulled in close, knocking and faked the handoff.
- 1:47:32He's being rushed.
- 1:47:33There is a pass intended for Homer Jones.
- 1:47:36Jones with two men on him, incomplete.
- 1:47:39Number 53, Jim Burnell, and number 24, Rosie Taylor were on Homer Jones.
- 1:47:45Jones could not get his hands on it, and the Chicago Bears have done a great job of containing the offense
- 1:47:52of a New York giant here this afternoon.
- 1:47:55They've done certainly a fine job covering Homer Jones, but it's taken two men to do it, Woody.
- 1:48:01I'll point that out, but if that's the case, they've found the secret, and they are containing him so far this afternoon.
- 1:48:07Jim Burnell leaves the ballgame.
- 1:48:09He's replaced by Joe Taylor as the Bears go to a defense using five defensive halfbacks.
- 1:48:14Homer Jones over on the far side, Schauffner on the near side, and Fredrickson and Trippert are the running back,
- 1:48:20tracking and calling the signals.
- 1:48:22Takes the snap from center.
- 1:48:23He fades back a short pass intended for Bill Trippert, incomplete.
- 1:48:29The pass was overthrown, incomplete.
- 1:48:34That makes it third and ten, two minutes and 44 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:48:42The Washington Redskins have scored 17 points to San Francisco's 21 this afternoon.
- 1:48:48That's a third period score.
- 1:48:50In the third quarter, Pittsburgh and St. Louis are all tied up 7-7.
- 1:48:55In the second quarter, Dallas 14, New Orleans 7.
- 1:48:58At the completion of one period of play, no score, Detroit and Minnesota.
- 1:49:02Here at Wrigley Field, it is 20 for the Chicago Bears, 7 for the New York Giants.
- 1:49:07Homer Jones over on the far side, Schauffner on the near side, Prockenden being right, being pulled down, behind the line of Philly,
- 1:49:13back on about the one-yard line by Ed O'Bradovich and Marty Ansler and Dick Eby.
- 1:49:21All from the front four of the Chicago Bears.
- 1:49:26And they got a tremendous salvation from the fans here at Wrigley Field.
- 1:49:31Rightfully so.
- 1:49:33Sorry, Woody, they've been putting the stretcher on, talking to me all afternoon,
- 1:49:36but once again, you've got to give a lot of credit to that defensive secondary.
- 1:49:39He was looking for Aaron Thomas, and Thomas was covered very well that time by Richie Paterbone.
- 1:49:44He couldn't throw him the ball, then he looked for Aaron Thomas.
- 1:49:47I mean, then he looked for Del Schauffner, and he was covered by Gentry.
- 1:49:50He just had to eat it.
- 1:49:52And like you called, there's four linemen right on top of Frank Darkington.
- 1:49:56Ernie Coy kicking into the wind.
- 1:49:58There's a high staff from center.
- 1:50:00He gets the boot away.
- 1:50:01It wobbles, lands on the 30, rolls to the 35.
- 1:50:05And finally down by Freeman White, who steps out of bounds on the 36th job line.
- 1:50:11In New York Giants territory.
- 1:50:13And so it is first and 10, the Bears, on the Giants 36.
- 1:50:20The Chicago Bears are leading 20 to 7.
- 1:50:22We have two minutes and 11 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter of this contest.
- 1:50:28The Giants scored first.
- 1:50:29They scored seven in the first period.
- 1:50:31The Bears came back and scored 20 in the second quarter.
- 1:50:34No score so far in the third quarter.
- 1:50:36So it is 20 for the Bears, seven for the Giants.
- 1:50:41Dick, while we have an opportunity, while there is a lull in the action,
- 1:50:45again let me say that it's gratifying for so many of our listeners to write in and to apply for their membership cards.
- 1:50:51We have had hundreds and hundreds of letters, and those cards are on their way to those who have written.
- 1:50:58And those who have not written, we invite them to do so.
- 1:51:00Right Woody, as you say, it is gratifying certainly to have so many listeners write in.
- 1:51:05And as Dean Martin says, keep those cards and letters coming in.
- 1:51:08It's always a pleasure to hear from you.
- 1:51:10And that's the truth.
- 1:51:12And we have been getting letters from all our listeners and from every radio station that's in the Giants network.
- 1:51:17Certainly it's very pleasing.
- 1:51:20And so it is now first and 10, Chicago Bears, on the New York Giants 36 yard line.
- 1:51:28Two minutes and 11 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:51:34As play is about to resume, the Bears are back in the huddle.
- 1:51:36They break out of the huddle, move up to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:51:38Dick Gordon is flicked to the near side, and Johnny Morris is flanked over on the far side.
- 1:51:43Number 29, Ron Bull on the wing on the far side.
- 1:51:47Rake draw calling the signal.
- 1:51:49There is a marker on the play, offside.
- 1:51:52Now whether or not that penalty will be called against the Giants or the Bears, we'll learn of that, but we'll find out, Dick.
- 1:52:00Well, that was offside.
- 1:52:01Jim Cadcavage decided to take an early look and see what was going to happen.
- 1:52:05He was back there three yards before Rake draw had the football, so it is against the Giants.
- 1:52:11Now the ball is on the 30 yard line of the New York Giants, first down and five.
- 1:52:17They're in a real bad position, but again, they've stopped him before.
- 1:52:21The scoring has come as a result of interceptions on the fair defense, and let's see if they can hold them now, Wood.
- 1:52:28Rake draw calling the signals at quarterback for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:52:31Takes a snap from center, hands that ball off the stairs.
- 1:52:34There's a sweep.
- 1:52:35He heads over to the far side of the field, gets to about the 34 yard line.
- 1:52:39Now that will mean a loss of about three yards on the play, and he's stopped over there on the far side of the field by Clarence Childs and Ken Avery.
- 1:52:47Childs is the right cornerback, and Ken Avery the right linebacker for the New York Giants.
- 1:52:53All right, Avery returned on that play, Wood.
- 1:52:55He's holding shoulder.
- 1:52:56Ed Wysockowski now has come in to replace him.
- 1:52:58Once again, though, you've got to give a lot of credit to Ken Avery.
- 1:53:00He's meeting the best when he meets Cale Sayers on those sweeps, and he is meeting them and stopping them.
- 1:53:05He's not gaining any yards around Ken Avery's side, and Clarence Childs, too, is doing an excellent job.
- 1:53:10The Bears are up at the line of scrimmage, number 47, Morris flanked to the near side.
- 1:53:14Dick Gordon splits over to the far side, the running back to the stairs and Bull.
- 1:53:18Rake Straw calling the signals, takes the snap from center, hands the ball off the stairs.
- 1:53:22There's the sweep from the near side.
- 1:53:23Sayers gets to the 30, down to the 25, gets to the 20.
- 1:53:27He's finally dropped on the near side of the field on about the 18 yard line by Freeman White.
- 1:53:34It's a beautiful sight to watch the runner like Cale Sayers run.
- 1:53:38Absolutely sensational, Woody.
- 1:53:40He's got a lot of play in his track, to start eating, was about to make a tackle, put back inside and kept going.
- 1:53:44Just on the dime he stopped there.
- 1:53:46Quite a fine runner.
- 1:53:48Cale Sayers on a sweep, picked up the first down for the Chicago Bears, and it is first and 10 for Chicago on the giant 18 yard line.
- 1:53:57The Bears are back in the huddle.
- 1:53:58They're leading 20 to 7.
- 1:54:00They move out of the huddle, up to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:54:02Johnny Morris flanked to the far side.
- 1:54:04Dick Gordon split to the near side.
- 1:54:06Ron Bull moved over to the wing on the far side.
- 1:54:09Rake Straw is calling signals.
- 1:54:12He takes the stuff and rolls down to the far side.
- 1:54:15Looks for a receiver and Gale Sayers incomplete.
- 1:54:18Sayers was on about the floor.
- 1:54:20He threw the ball behind him.
- 1:54:21Incomplete.
- 1:54:23Makes it second and 10, with a ball on the giant 18.
- 1:54:27Second and 10, 31 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:54:31The Bears leading 20 to 7.
- 1:54:33They're threatening with 31 seconds remaining of this period.
- 1:54:37That actually is the option run, old pass play, that Contanan ran so very well in the first half, would he,
- 1:54:43until he was taken out of the ball game on a vicious tackle by Jim Cadcaver.
- 1:54:48But this time Rake Straw decided to throw the football.
- 1:54:53He was looking for Sayers.
- 1:54:55The Sayers were covered very well that time by Bill Swain, and he threw the ball behind him.
- 1:54:59As they break out of the huddle, Morris is flanked to the far side.
- 1:55:02Dick Gordon split to the near side.
- 1:55:05Rake Straw the quarterback.
- 1:55:07The running backs are Bull and Sayers.
- 1:55:08Over the ball at center is Mike Pyle.
- 1:55:11There's a snap to Rake Straw.
- 1:55:13He steps back, passes, and tended over to the far side for Austin Jenney.
- 1:55:18Incomplete.
- 1:55:19It was thrown high.
- 1:55:20Jenney was covered by Freeman White.
- 1:55:24And so it's third and 10.
- 1:55:26On the New York Giants' 18-yard line, the Chicago Bears in possession.
- 1:55:3027 seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:55:33Coming into the ball game, Mike Rayball.
- 1:55:37And Mike no doubt is bringing a play in from the bench, as they're doing with Rake Straw.
- 1:55:41They are sending their players back in and into and from the ball game.
- 1:55:46I'm sure George Callis is calling these plays.
- 1:55:48A man very dangerous down here would be number 47, Johnny Morris.
- 1:55:53Let's see what happens, will he?
- 1:55:54Rayball replaces Jim Cadill.
- 1:55:58Rake Straw calling the signals.
- 1:56:00The quarterback for the Bears.
- 1:56:01He takes a snap from center, steps back, a pass, and tended in.
- 1:56:05Rake Straw, Rake Straw, Rake Straw, touchdown there.
- 1:56:10Rake Straw flew in the end zone to Dick Gordon.
- 1:56:14Gordon caught it.
- 1:56:15The man on Gordon was Clarence Giles.
- 1:56:18It was a beautifully thrown pass.
- 1:56:20Dick Gordon just turned around, pulled the ball in, touched down Chicago.
- 1:56:27And so it is now 26 for the Bears, 7 for the Giants.
- 1:56:33The try for the extra point, Max Percival, will attempt the conversion.
- 1:56:41Mike Pyle over the ball at center.
- 1:56:42There's the stop to hold the boot.
- 1:56:44It is good.
- 1:56:4527 for the Chicago Bears, 7 for the New York Giants.
- 1:56:49More New York Giants football in just 60 seconds.
- 1:56:54Music. How important is it?
- 1:56:59The Music Educators National Conference asks some prominent Americans to comment.
- 1:57:04Otto Graham, head coach of the Washington Redskins.
- 1:57:08I was born and raised in a musical family.
- 1:57:11Of course, I was a typical youngster.
- 1:57:15When my father wanted me to practice, I would much rather go out and play football or baseball.
- 1:57:21And as I look back, music I think has helped me.
- 1:57:24I think any good athlete has to have rhythm, has to have timing.
- 1:57:29And of course, music is rhythm and timing.
- 1:57:32I think every youngster should study music and then time it and have an understanding of it.
- 1:57:38Give young people the opportunity to build a close relationship with music.
- 1:57:42Support music in your schools.
- 1:57:44For information, write the Music Educators National Conference.
- 1:57:48Or write MEMC, Box 1300, Washington, D.C., 20013.
- 1:57:55Wrigley Field in Chicago.
- 1:57:57The Chicago Bears and the New York Giants, Chicago leading 27 to 7.
- 1:58:02Twelve seconds of playing time remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:58:05Along with Dick Lynch and Ted Hodge, this is Woody Erdman.
- 1:58:08The kickoff was taken by Clarence Childs.
- 1:58:10He carried it to the 19-yard line.
- 1:58:12And that is the end of the quarter.
- 1:58:15And so the New York Giants will be in possession of the football on their own 19-yard line
- 1:58:20as we start the fourth period of play.
- 1:58:23Here before we resume action is Ted Hodge.
- 1:58:26Now, Mohawk Airlines introduces more nonstop and jet-powered flights with its new flight schedule.
- 1:58:33Mohawk has gone all out for the comfort and convenience of air travelers.
- 1:58:37And the new flight schedule holds no exception.
- 1:58:39An example is the new nonstop jet service from Westchester County to Detroit.
- 1:58:43Or jet nonstop from Syracuse to Pittsburgh, Delmyra to Cleveland, or New York to Syracuse.
- 1:58:49Pick up the new Mohawk Airlines flight schedule and see for yourself.
- 1:58:53Mohawk has not only added more jet flights, but more ways to serve you.
- 1:58:58Mohawk Tourism will greet you in their new Sac-5th Avenue outfit.
- 1:59:02Jet Mohawk and see a fashion show on every flight.
- 1:59:06Mohawk serves 75 cities in 10 states.
- 1:59:11And here in Chicago, we go into the fourth quarter of play.
- 1:59:14The Chicago Bears having just gone out in front of the New York Giants, fire score of 27 to 7.
- 1:59:20Other scores on our scoreboard after three periods of play.
- 1:59:23The Baltimore Colts 42 and the Atlanta Falcons 7.
- 1:59:27Another third-quarter score, San Francisco 21, Washington 17.
- 1:59:32And we go into the fourth quarter now. The Giants will be in possession.
- 1:59:35It will be their ball, first and 10.
- 1:59:37Here to tell you about it, Woody Erdman.
- 1:59:40Up with the line of scurries, the New York Giants.
- 1:59:42Homer Jones on the far side, Schaffner on the near side.
- 1:59:45Triplett and Frederiksen are the running backs.
- 1:59:47Tarkin in a pass to Frederiksen.
- 1:59:48Frederiksen takes it, carries the ball up to the 20-yard line.
- 1:59:52He took it on about the 15, and he is upended there by Curtis Gentry.
- 1:59:57That was a short pass in the flat to Frederiksen.
- 2:00:00Frederiksen caught it on about the 15, carried it to about the 20.
- 2:00:04And so there's a pickup, but perhaps the yard on the play would make a second down in 9.
- 2:00:09And so it is 27-7, the Bears over the Giants here at the start of the final period of play.
- 2:00:20Give it a pick-up of 2, makes it second and a coys in the ball game, replacing Triplett.
- 2:00:24There's a pass intended for Aaron Thomas.
- 2:00:27He was covered beautifully by Richie Pettibone.
- 2:00:30The strong safetyman for the Chicago Bears, incomplete.
- 2:00:33A pass intended for Aaron Thomas from Fran Tarkin, incomplete.
- 2:00:38And so that makes it third and eight.
- 2:00:4014 minutes and 18 seconds of playing time remaining in the football game.
- 2:00:44Third period score, Pittsburgh 7, St. Louis 7.
- 2:00:48No score in the game between Detroit and Minnesota first quarter.
- 2:00:51Second period, Dallas 14, New Orleans 7.
- 2:00:54Final, Baltimore beat Atlanta 49-7.
- 2:00:58Out of the huddle up to the line is coming the New York Giants.
- 2:01:02Now the flanker type of offense, called by Fran Tarkin.
- 2:01:06Tarkin in face, he's being rushed.
- 2:01:08He rolls out, he's looking for receivers, finds one in Del Schopner.
- 2:01:12It was deflected in part by number 20, Joe Taylor.
- 2:01:17It rolled off the fingertips of Del Schopner.
- 2:01:21Reflected in part by Taylor, Schopner, nevertheless almost caught it.
- 2:01:26It just rolled off his fingertips.
- 2:01:27He couldn't reach far enough to get a deck.
- 2:01:29Fine effort there by Taylor, as you called, Woody.
- 2:01:31Fran went back to fill the ball.
- 2:01:33He was looking for Homer, didn't have enough time to throw the ball to him.
- 2:01:36He scrambled out to his own right side.
- 2:01:39And at this time, that's when the defensive back had to really keep his eye on the receiver.
- 2:01:43And he kept his eye on Del, and so made a square out move.
- 2:01:46He got his hand up there just enough to deflect it.
- 2:01:50There's the Jones or Deet, as Ernie Coy boots the ball, and it goes and over and bounds on about the 30.
- 2:01:58And it's down there by number 51 for the New York Giants.
- 2:02:02A 49-yard boost.
- 2:02:07Ed Wybckowski down that ball on the 31 for the New York Giants.
- 2:02:13And it first intends Chicago on their own 31-yard line.
- 2:02:1713 minutes and 58 seconds of playing time remaining in the contest, as the Bears are now in possession of the football.
- 2:02:24Austin Denny is the tight end.
- 2:02:26Dick Gordon the split end.
- 2:02:27Johnny Morris the flanker back.
- 2:02:29Gale Sayers and Ron Bull.
- 2:02:31The running back.
- 2:02:35A substitution. Ralph Couric goes in to replace Bull.
- 2:02:38Couric mows out on the wing on the near side.
- 2:02:41Rake Straw calling the signals at quarterback.
- 2:02:44He hands the ball off to number 41.
- 2:02:46Piccolo, Piccolo goes off tackle, picks up yardage, gets past the 35, up to about the 39-yard line.
- 2:02:53Brian Piccolo replaced Gale Sayers in the lineup for the Chicago Bears.
- 2:02:58And he picks up yardage as the ball was carried up to the 39-yard line.
- 2:03:03Brian Piccolo, a three-year man, six feet tall, 205 pounds, prior to the start of this game had 46 carries for 146 yards.
- 2:03:13He's a graduate of Wake Forest.
- 2:03:15Number 47, Johnny Morris blanked out to the far side.
- 2:03:17Dick Gordon, split to the near side.
- 2:03:20Over the ball at center is Mike Pile. He's a graduate of Yale.
- 2:03:23There's the snap to Rake Straw.
- 2:03:24He fades. A short pass intended for Piccolo, incomplete.
- 2:03:31And so that makes it third and two.
- 2:03:34Twelve minutes and 45 seconds of playing time remaining in the contest.
- 2:03:38And the Bears are leading 27-7.
- 2:03:41Next week, the Pittsburgh Steelers come to Yankee Stadium.
- 2:03:50Coming into the football game, Obradovich, leaving the game, Dick Gordon.
- 2:03:56Obradovich, who plays both defense and offense.
- 2:04:00He's a defensive end and an offensive end.
- 2:04:04In there offensively for blocking purposes.
- 2:04:06That's right. We have part of the play coming right his way.
- 2:04:10There is a marker on the field as they started to put the play in a motion.
- 2:04:18I think it was against the Giants.
- 2:04:20They were, unless I just say they might have been pulled off.
- 2:04:27Yeah, it is against the Giants, Woody.
- 2:04:29Offside, they're just here for the Bears.
- 2:04:32First down and Obradovich doesn't even have to block.
- 2:04:36And so Dick Gordon replaces Obradovich at split end for the Chicago Bears.
- 2:04:42And the ball is resting now on their own 44-yard line.
- 2:04:46That makes it first and 10.
- 2:04:48Number 47, Johnny Morris, flanks out to the far side.
- 2:04:51And Dick Gordon is split to the near side.
- 2:04:53There's a snap to Rake's draw.
- 2:04:55A pass over to Johnny Morris.
- 2:04:57Morris was on about the line of scrimmage.
- 2:04:59And he is stopped as he receives the pass by Scott Eaton.
- 2:05:03Right, and Scott Eaton that time read the play perfect.
- 2:05:07This is the same play that Morris took a two-yard hit and then went about 20 yards with the ball.
- 2:05:14What might happen now, you've got to be very careful.
- 2:05:16And they've done this many times.
- 2:05:18They will fake that little hit and let Scott Eaton come on up and then Johnny Morris can just take off and go deep.
- 2:05:23And they've done this before and they might be trying to set this up.
- 2:05:26Carl has to be very careful, but I know he's a fine defensive back and he reacts very well.
- 2:05:30I think he'll be able to handle it.
- 2:05:33As the Bears move out of the huddle, Johnny Morris is on the flank on the far side and Gordon is split to the near side.
- 2:05:39Rake's draw takes the snap from center.
- 2:05:42That is a lateral intended for Brian Piccolo.
- 2:05:46It was thrown behind Piccolo.
- 2:05:48Piccolo then reversed his position, got back to the football and fell on it.
- 2:05:53So the ball is back now on the 30-yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 2:05:57Right, Woody. They seem to have some mix-up in their signals.
- 2:06:00This is around the third play.
- 2:06:02I've seen them mixed up.
- 2:06:03And I think it might be due in part to Piccolo and Couric.
- 2:06:06They're two new men.
- 2:06:07They're probably a little excited about being in the football game.
- 2:06:09They both have three years experience.
- 2:06:11I don't think they have that much playing time.
- 2:06:13And even with Rake's draw in there, that makes them three new men basically.
- 2:06:17And they'll have to iron these things out.
- 2:06:20Gordon to the near side, Morris to the far side.
- 2:06:23Mike Pyle to center.
- 2:06:24Rake's draw calling the signals takes the snap fade.
- 2:06:27There's a pass over the line to number 32.
- 2:06:30Couric gets the pass on about the 35-yard line.
- 2:06:34He's dropped on the 37 by Edward Zekowski.
- 2:06:37So that's short of a first down, and the Chicago Bears will be forced to punt.
- 2:06:42We have 10 minutes and 50 seconds of playing time remaining in the contest.
- 2:06:46And the Giants are down 27 to 7.
- 2:06:50So they're backed by three touchdowns.
- 2:06:54Ten minutes and 35 seconds of playing time remaining in the game.
- 2:07:01It is now fourth and 17 for the Bears.
- 2:07:04As Bobby Joe Green goes back to do the booting for Chicago.
- 2:07:09Over the ball at center, Mike Pyle.
- 2:07:11There's the snap from center.
- 2:07:13It's a punt into the wind that bounds high in the air, and they're allowing it to roll.
- 2:07:19And it rolls back to about the 25-yard line, where it is down on the 25-yard line.
- 2:07:27So it will be first and 10 New York Giants on their own 25 to score here at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
- 2:07:3527 for Chicago, 7 for the Giants, and more New York Giants football in just 60 seconds.
- 2:07:46Here at Chicago, other than a 36-yard scoring drive put on by the Bears late in the third quarter,
- 2:07:51it's been a seesaw battle in the second half.
- 2:07:53Very little scoring. The Giants put the ball in play here to tell you about it. Woody Urgin.
- 2:07:57There's the snap to Tuckerman. Tuckerman hands the ball off. It's carried into the line.
- 2:08:01And I believe there's a fumble in there. We're waiting for them to unfold.
- 2:08:06And the Bears have recovered.
- 2:08:08Yes, that's right, Woody. And once again, it's this bare defensive team that come up with the big play.
- 2:08:13They certainly remind me of that defensive team in 1963, and they won that title strictly on defense that year.
- 2:08:20They allowed their opponents an average of 10 points per game, and in the championship game,
- 2:08:26that's all we did score against them. They only scored 14 points, but it was enough to win the football game.
- 2:08:32And now it's the same thing happening this year, and with this great Chicago Bears defense really looking up
- 2:08:37and pursuing and doing a heck of a job, they have given the opportunity once again to the Chicago offense.
- 2:08:43First in 10 Chicago on the Giants 23. Rake draw calling the signals for the Bears.
- 2:08:50Takes the snap from center, hands the ball off. It's carried into the near side of the line where he hits the stolen wall.
- 2:08:56Ralph Shurik took a handoff from Rake's draw, and as he moved to the near side of the line,
- 2:09:01Edward Zakowski and Bob Lertzema hit him. And just like concrete, he was stopped.
- 2:09:06Right, he went right down. It was a fine hit by Wyzekowski, and he's very happy to be in the football game.
- 2:09:11He's replacing Ken Avery, and they should know that they're going to come right at him and test him out,
- 2:09:17and that's exactly what they're doing.
- 2:09:21The Washington Redskins have beat the San Francisco 49ers 31 to 28 this afternoon.
- 2:09:26The Giants up at the line of scrimmage. There's the snap from center.
- 2:09:29The ball carried to the near side and forced out of bounds on the near side.
- 2:09:34Brian Piccolo carried. Freeman White forced him out of bounds.
- 2:09:39Brian Piccolo in the football game, replacing Gale Sears. Ralph Shurik has replaced Ron Bull.
- 2:09:46Larry Rake's draw earlier during the course of the afternoon replaced the injured Jackson Cannon.
- 2:09:52It's third and five, Chicago, with a ball resting on about the 18-yard line of the New York Giants.
- 2:09:59And a play that we saw earlier in the third quarter, when they tried to hit the tight end drone,
- 2:10:06he was open. You just might see that play here. That's about the only place they have to go.
- 2:10:12Jimmy Jones is in the ball game, as Dick has indicated, at tight end. There's the snap to Rake's draw.
- 2:10:18The ball is given to Jones, and Jones, along the near sideline, Clarence Childs, forces him out of bounds.
- 2:10:27Well, it's not exactly what I had in mind. I didn't know he was going to get the ball that way.
- 2:10:32But it's another fine play by Jones, and this was, again, a reverse.
- 2:10:36This is due in part to the great pursuit of the New York Giants.
- 2:10:40They're coming down, they're following the football, they're following every move with those spare backs.
- 2:10:44And as they moved inside that time, they came right around on the outside, picked up enough yardage for the first down.
- 2:10:50So it's first and ten, Chicago Bears, a carry by Jimmy Jones, who has gone into the ball game, a tight end, replacing Austin Denny.
- 2:10:59Number 47, Johnny Morris, flanked to the near side, and Gordon is split to the far side.
- 2:11:04Number 12, Rake's draw, rolled out to the far side, he carries it in for a touchdown.
- 2:11:12He fakes action from the near side, and on some beautiful deceptive handling of that ball, he rolled out to the far side.
- 2:11:21Everything was moved to the near side, and Rake's draw carried it in for the touchdown.
- 2:11:26The joint teams remember so well with, like they Gary Wood used to do it so much, they faked the tweet, he kept the ball himself and just fed it all.
- 2:11:34He was all by himself. The only boy in front of him was Bill Twain, and Twain just missed him.
- 2:11:40So you've got to give credit to Rake's draw, it was a fine play.
- 2:11:43Once again, it was the pursuit of the New York Giants that enabled that play to work.
- 2:11:48The extra point kick was good, so it is now 34 for the Chicago Bears, 7 for the New York Giants.
- 2:11:56Set.
- 2:12:00And there's a pause in the action here at Chicago, the score, 34 for the Bears, and 7 for the Giants.
- 2:12:06More Giants football in just 30 seconds.
- 2:12:09Give your heart a break. Give your heart a break. Give your heart a break.
- 2:12:21Yes, here's a simple set to help reduce your risk of heart attack.
- 2:12:25Eat a balanced diet, low in cholesterol and saturated fat.
- 2:12:29A healthful diet benefits the whole family.
- 2:12:31For other steps to reduce your risk, ask your heart association.
- 2:12:35A simple set to help reduce your risk, give your heart a break.
- 2:12:40Chicago, the Chicago Bears on the scoreboard once again now lead the Giants by a score of 34 to 7,
- 2:12:46with 8 minutes playing time remaining in the ball game.
- 2:12:49The Giants set to receive now as it will be Mac Percival kicking off for the Bears once again,
- 2:12:54Percival places the ball down on the 40 yard line.
- 2:12:57Giants all set to receive from the far side of the field.
- 2:13:01Here to tell you about it once again, the network worried that the Giants would be hurt.
- 2:13:06Mac Percival kicks off for the Chicago Bears.
- 2:13:09It's a high one. It's taken by number 27, Randy Minier.
- 2:13:13Minier races up the near sideline.
- 2:13:15He is mailed at the 30 yard line on the near side of the field.
- 2:13:19And so it will be 1st and 10 for the New York Giants on their own 30 yard line.
- 2:13:24Earl Morrow has replaced Fran Stockenden at quarterback for the Giants.
- 2:13:30So it's 1st and 10 Giants on their own 30 yard line.
- 2:13:34We have 7 minutes and 51 seconds of playing time remaining in this contest.
- 2:13:41Earl Morrow has replaced Fran Stockenden at quarterback for the Giants.
- 2:13:45They move out of the huddle up to the line of Scrummage.
- 2:13:48Del Schopner is flanked out to the far side and Homer Jones is switched to the near side.
- 2:13:52Morrow takes the handoff.
- 2:13:54He passes good to Del Schopner.
- 2:13:56Del Schopner gets it on about the 42 or 43 yard line and he's dropped there by Curtis Gentry.
- 2:14:02A pass from Morrow to Del Schopner moves the ball up to about the 43.
- 2:14:07So it will be 1st and 10 Giants on their own 43 yard line.
- 2:14:137 minutes and 10 seconds of playing time remaining in this contest.
- 2:14:18And the Chicago Bears are leading 34 to 7.
- 2:14:21Schopner flanks out to the far side and Homer Jones splits to the near side to tie down Aaron Thomas.
- 2:14:26There is a marker on the play as the Chicago Bear on the near side was offside.
- 2:14:31I believe it was Ed O'Bradovich.
- 2:14:35A marker on the play.
- 2:14:376 minutes and 56 seconds of playing time remaining in the contest.
- 2:14:43The Bears leading 34 to 7.
- 2:14:465 yards stepped off against the Chicago Bears and that makes it 1st and 5 for the Giants.
- 2:14:52So the ball has been placed now on about the 46 or 47.
- 2:14:57The man that Earl liked to hit, or has liked to hit in the past has been Aaron Thomas.
- 2:15:02I think that's the boy that they'd like to see open up here.
- 2:15:06Earl Morrow calling the signals.
- 2:15:08Ball to Giants, takes the snap from center, hands the ball off.
- 2:15:11It's carried into the middle by Tucker Frederickson.
- 2:15:13Frederickson carries it past the midfield stripe down to about the 46 yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 2:15:19Now that should be enough for about a first down.
- 2:15:23They may call for a measurement.
- 2:15:25A handoff from Earl Morrow to Tucker Frederickson.
- 2:15:31They're calling for a measurement.
- 2:15:33We have 6 minutes and 30 seconds of playing time remaining in the football game.
- 2:15:38Randy Minier replaces Tucker Frederickson.
- 2:15:42Minier has just been activated for the Giants.
- 2:15:47Well I think with Minier in there now and replacing Tucker, you're going to see him come out of the backfield.
- 2:15:53I think he's going to throw the football and put it in the air.
- 2:15:57He'll have around 5 receivers to throw to, would he?
- 2:16:02The Giants are up at the line of scrimmage, Dick.
- 2:16:05Earl Morrow calling the signals, takes the snap from center.
- 2:16:08He gets away from one tackler.
- 2:16:09There's a pass over to the far side, completed to Randy Minier.
- 2:16:12There is a marker on the play.
- 2:16:15A marker on the play on about the midfield stripe.
- 2:16:18Dick Butchers.
- 2:16:19And I believe it's a face mask penalty that will be called against Chicago, Dick.
- 2:16:23Well it's a 15 yarder, Woody.
- 2:16:25It probably isn't a face mask penalty.
- 2:16:27Butchers came over there and really hit Minier.
- 2:16:30Now that's the second time that he's been hit very hard in this ball game.
- 2:16:36It's a necessary roughness call against Dick Butchers and the Bears.
- 2:16:41Here's the Giants first down on about the 35 yard line.
- 2:16:46And again, Morrow had five men to throw to that time.
- 2:16:50He had everyone out of the backfield, no protection, and threw to the release valve, Minier.
- 2:16:56Up at the line of scrimmage, the New York Giants.
- 2:16:58Morrow calling the signals, takes the snap from center, face into the pocket.
- 2:17:01He's being pulled down behind the line of scrimmage.
- 2:17:06The ball rolls out of his hands.
- 2:17:08I believe the play was called dead on about the 44, 45 yard line.
- 2:17:14Ed O'Bradovich nailed him.
- 2:17:18O'Bradovich, the left defensive end for the Chicago Bears.
- 2:17:23The ball is being put down on about the 43 yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 2:17:30This O'Bradovich, Ed O'Bradovich, is really having a fine year.
- 2:17:34It wasn't really spectacular in the beginning, but now they say his last two football games,
- 2:17:38he's really come on like he's all pro, and he's doing a fine job here today.
- 2:17:42He's been in on many a tackle.
- 2:17:44He's kept the pressure on, and now he's keeping the pressure up on Earl Morrow.
- 2:17:47He certainly has been a big force today for the Chicago Bears, causing the boys, the quarterbacks,
- 2:17:52to throw the ball early and causing these interceptions that's been taking place.
- 2:17:5634 to 7, there's the snap to Morrow. Morrow, being right, gets away from one tackler,
- 2:18:01passes the ball to numbers.
- 2:18:03Is that Randy Minier?
- 2:18:05Minier gets the ball on about the 30 yard line, races along the near sideline,
- 2:18:09and he is finally pushed out of bounds on about the 22 yard line by Curtis Jenfrey.
- 2:18:16So that first 10-10 New York Giants on the Chicago Bears' 23 yard line,
- 2:18:21while we have an opportunity that for 10 seconds more station identification,
- 2:18:26listed the New York Giants Radio Network.
- 2:18:28This is the bright sound in radio, WGY, a General Electric Broadcasting Company station
- 2:18:34at 810 on your dial in Schenectady, New York.
- 2:18:38Wrigley Field, Chicago, 5 minutes and 49 seconds of playing time remaining,
- 2:18:42and the Chicago Bears are leading the New York Giants 34 to 7.
- 2:18:46There's the snap to Will Morrell, a path intended for Joe Schaffner, incomplete,
- 2:18:51almost intercepted by Joe Taylor.
- 2:18:54Taylor was covering Schaffner.
- 2:18:56Taylor was right on his back, real fine coverage that time.
- 2:18:59He was watching his receiver.
- 2:19:01Had he looked up that time, he would have seen the ball thrown behind Dale,
- 2:19:04and he might have picked it off.
- 2:19:06It would have been a touchdown for the Bears, so there was no one in his way to stop him.
- 2:19:11Real fine coverage by Taylor, once again that Chicago front four plus Butkus.
- 2:19:16Butkus was lifting that time, put a lot of pressure on Earl.
- 2:19:19Earl had to get rid of the ball a little early.
- 2:19:21Dallas leading the Wardians in the third quarter, 24 to 10.
- 2:19:26And now Homer Jones is good to the far side, Schaffner flanked to the near side.
- 2:19:32Morrell calling the signal.
- 2:19:36And there are markers on the play as the Chicago Bears moved off sides
- 2:19:42as the discussion down there with Will Morrell in the center of it.
- 2:19:47And I believe they're calling a penalty against the Giants for luring the Bears offside.
- 2:19:54Five minutes and 45 seconds of playing time remaining.
- 2:19:58That's right, they had to hold the Chicago Bears team that time right inside the giant offensive line.
- 2:20:05Morrell jumps up, evidently it was one of the guards who pulled him offside.
- 2:20:08They're looking at Andy Gross, he's a young rookie in there.
- 2:20:11He might have been the one that pulled him offside.
- 2:20:14Andy Gross has replaced Pete Case in the offensive line for the New York Giants.
- 2:20:19Schaffner flanked to the near side and Homer Jones is split and moved in on the far side.
- 2:20:24Morrell takes the snap from center.
- 2:20:26There is a pass to Cressino who is in the ball game for the Giants.
- 2:20:30He gets the ball on the 20-yard line and he's tackled on the 20-yard line by Dick Pettibone.
- 2:20:38And so the ball is now on the 20-yard line and that will make it five minutes and 22 seconds of playing time remaining.
- 2:20:49Third and seventh. Five minutes and ten seconds of playing time remaining in the contest.
- 2:20:54And with the ball on the 20, it is third and seventh for the Giants.
- 2:20:58As they move out of the huddle, Homer Jones is on the near side and Schaffner is flanked to the far side.
- 2:21:04Earl Morrell calling the signals, takes the snap from center.
- 2:21:08He went back into the pocket, stepped forward two steps, he could not move.
- 2:21:13A pass was put on him and he was pulled down behind the line of scrimmage back on the 24 by Dick Nevy and Dick Butchers.
- 2:21:20Well they're putting a lot of pressure on Merrill and the whole front four is in there right on top of him, Woody.
- 2:21:26They're real strong down there. I don't think they want to let the Giants score.
- 2:21:29They have a lot of pride in their defensive unit and if it looks like this is going to be like this for the Bears the rest of the year,
- 2:21:37they're going to be tough competition and they might, as their players indicate, they feel they have a real good chance at the title.
- 2:21:43They'll know a little bit more this afternoon as the Green Bay Tigers meet the Cleveland Browns.
- 2:21:48Frank McCray replaces Obradovich. Schaffner is flanked to the far side. Homer Jones on the near side.
- 2:21:55Marl takes a snap from center. There is a pass intended for Bob Crespino.
- 2:22:00He had his hands on it but couldn't hold it. The pass was just a little low and Earl is just after throwing that ball low.
- 2:22:07Crespino as he came towards the middle of the field, stepped down to try to grab hold of that football but not hold it.
- 2:22:13And so the Chicago Bears take over on their own 24 yard line.
- 2:22:18Right and that was once again excellent coverage that time by Rosie Taylor right on top of Crespino of course in helping him along.
- 2:22:26He's fletched the football too Willie. I thought Bobby was reaching for it.
- 2:22:31Good defensive play there by the defensive secondary in particular Rosie Taylor.
- 2:22:3734 to 7 the Chicago Bears leading the New York Giants. We have 4 minutes and 21 seconds of playing time remaining in the contest.
- 2:22:45Final scores 49 Baltimore 7 Atlanta. 31 to 28 Washington Beach to San Francisco 49ers this afternoon.
- 2:22:55In the third period it is Dallas 24 New Orleans 10. In the third quarter Detroit 10 Minnesota 10.
- 2:23:03And in the third quarter Pittsburgh and St. Louis all tied up 7-7.
- 2:23:09We have some defensive changes for the New York Giants. Randy Stanton replaces Glenn Condren. Jim Calvin replaces Bob Lersema.
- 2:23:19Bruce Anderson is in in place of Jim Kaczkiewicz. Jim Moran stays as the sole remaining member of the starting front four.
- 2:23:28Mike Ciccholalla goes in at middle linebacker for Vince Costello. Ed Wysockowski and Bill Swain are the other linebackers.
- 2:23:37Lersema is in there rather than Jim Moran. So Lersema and Colvin are the tackles.
- 2:23:43Anderson and Stanton are the defensive end for the Giants.
- 2:23:48Rake straw calling the signals for the Chicago Bears. Willie Williams replaces Scott Eaton as the defensive halfback.
- 2:23:55There's the snap. Two rakes draw the handoff to Piccolo. Piccolo attempts a slant to the near side of the field.
- 2:24:03And he is stopped after a pick up of perhaps the yard by Edward Zachowski and Clarence Giles assisted by Bob Lersema.
- 2:24:12The ball is placed on the 25. So that will make it second and nine.
- 2:24:17All right Woody and with the fine kicker as Bobby Joe Green for the Bears on their side.
- 2:24:23They'd like to just take this ball and run it. Stay inside the field and not go out of bounds.
- 2:24:29Just keep the clock moving and run this game out.
- 2:24:33The Chicago Bears up at the line of scrimmage. Larry Rake straw calling the signals at quarterback for Chicago.
- 2:24:38There's the snap from center of the handoff to number 41.
- 2:24:41Piccolo, Piccolo, a beautiful broken field running. It's past the 40, past the 50 into Giants territory on about the 47 yard line before he is finally stopped by Clarence Giles.
- 2:24:53Ryan Piccolo took a handoff, looked for an opening, found it and then made his opening.
- 2:24:59Looked for them, found them, took advantage of them as he crossed the midfield stripe, picked up the first down and then some and finally was brought down on about the 49 yard line still in Bears territory.
- 2:25:12Well they're blocking. They're working on Mike Piccolo right now and also Jim Colvin and it was fine blocking by Cadill and Pickens that time Woody.
- 2:25:20There's the snap to Rake straw, the handoff to Curick. Curick hits the far side of the line.
- 2:25:25He gets to about the midfield stripe and he is stopped there by the New York Giants forward wall backed up by Mike Ciccolalla, the middle linebacker.
- 2:25:33Bruce Anderson and Bob Lertema, the right side of the defensive line for the New York Giants spearheading the attack.
- 2:25:42So the ball is on the midfield stripe and it is now second and seven. It's in Giants territory on it but make it the Giants 49.
- 2:25:53Out of the huddle up to the line that's coming, the Chicago Bears.
- 2:26:00Bob Jones is the flanker back now for Chicago. Rake straw takes the snap in center. Bears a long pass and send it down the field.
- 2:26:09For Bob Jones it is incomplete. He was covered by Clarence Childs. Jones went down the near side of the field, turned in.
- 2:26:18The pass was thrown so that he could not hold it. He was covered by Clarence Childs.
- 2:26:25Two minutes and three seconds of playing time remaining in the contest.
- 2:26:30Thirty-four to seven the Bears out front. Two minutes and three seconds of playing time remaining.
- 2:26:36It's third and seven. The ball resting on the New York Giants 49 yard line.
- 2:26:47Out of the huddle up to the line that's coming, the Chicago Bears.
- 2:26:50Number 43, Bob Jones, flanked out to the far side. Jimmy Jones, the split end on the near side.
- 2:26:56There is a marker on the play, a pass intended for number 43, Bob Jones, incomplete. As we mentioned, there's a marker on the play.
- 2:27:05There is an offensive holy moody against the Chicago Bears and that's too bad.
- 2:27:09The pass was completed to Bob Jones. It's too bad for Bob Jones because that would have been his first reception of the year.
- 2:27:17I notice he hasn't received a pass. He hasn't caught a pass all year. I think Rake straw is trying to get him his first reception.
- 2:27:26Fifteen yard penalty stepped off against the Chicago Bears.
- 2:27:31And so that puts the ball back on the 31 yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 2:27:40They're leading 34 to 7. One minute and 55 seconds of playing time remaining in the contest.
- 2:27:50Thirty-four to seven the Chicago Bears leading the New York Giants.
- 2:27:53Next week the New York Giants host the Pittsburgh Steelers at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:28:00The Bears are back in the huddle. The running backs are Brian Piccolo and Ralph Keurig.
- 2:28:06The blanket backs, Bobby Jones, the split end, Jim Jones, and the tight end, Austin Denny.
- 2:28:15I believe that's the two minute timeout so while we have an opportunity here at Wrigley Field, the score is 34 for the Chicago Bears, seven for the New York Giants.
- 2:28:29Let's check our scoreboard while we have a moment.
- 2:28:33On our scoreboard, final scores, the Baltimore Coast 49, the Atlanta Falcons seven, Washington came from behind to beat San Francisco 31 to 28.
- 2:28:44Now the Bears are huddling back on the 15 yard line to put the ball in play from about the 30, here again at 20.
- 2:28:51The ball is on the 31 on their own 31. It makes it third and 28 for the Chicago Bears.
- 2:28:56They're now in a triple flanker offense.
- 2:28:59Rake straw takes a snap from center. He hands the ball off to Piccolo, Piccolo, a sweep around the near end, gets past the 35, up to about the 38 yard line, and he's tackled on the near side of the field by Freeman White.
- 2:29:12And so the ball is on the 38 and that will make it fourth down for the Chicago Bears and they will be forced into a punting situation.
- 2:29:22Fourth and 21, one minute and 40 seconds of playing time remaining in this contest.
- 2:29:29And the Chicago Bears are leading 34 to seven. The Giants scored seven in the first period. The Bears failed to score in the first quarter.
- 2:29:37And then the Bears came on strong, 20 in the second quarter, seven in the third, and seven in the final period.
- 2:29:4434 to seven Chicago out front, one minute and 20 seconds of playing time remaining. Back to do the punting is Bobby Joe Green.
- 2:29:52There's the snap from center. And there is the boot.
- 2:29:56It's called for by Randy Minier. He calls for a fair catch and downs the ball on the 30 yard line. Good for 32 yards.
- 2:30:05And so it's first and 10 New York Giants on their own 30 yard line.
- 2:30:11The Giants offensive lineup makes its appearance on the field. We have 54 seconds of playing time remaining in the contest.
- 2:30:18Fifty seconds. Next week the Steelers and the Giants. The Giants move out of the huddle up to the line of scrimmage.
- 2:30:25Del Schaffner flanked out to the far side. Homer Jones split to the near side. Aaron Thomas the tight end.
- 2:30:31There's the pitch out. Carried to the near side by Randy Minier. I believe there is a loss on the play.
- 2:30:37He is brought down on about the 26th or 27th by would you believe it? Ed O'Bradovich.
- 2:30:42Once again, Woody. Ed O'Bradovich. He's taking strong and he's having a fine year as I said.
- 2:30:47And he's really when he gets worked up there, he's going to keep the pressure on those quarterbacks and he's going to make it pretty rough on running backs.
- 2:30:56Exactly what he's doing out there today. Time for just one more play. Seven seconds. Six. Five. Four.
