- 0:00and what is going on
- 0:02everybody welcome to
- 0:04chopping it up with coach
- 0:06crispy cream special
- 0:08edition as he just finished
- 0:12the north no not north the
- 0:15west north america west
- 0:17semifinals where athlete
- 0:21hattie can you who nobody
- 0:22nobody knew about nobody knew nobody knew
- 0:29Qualified for the CrossFit Games.
- 0:33If only a media outlet would
- 0:36have interviewed her or her
- 0:37coach in the last year so
- 0:39that we could have known.
- 0:40Could have known she was out there.
- 0:42Yeah, but nobody knew.
- 0:46Nobody knew how to pronounce her name.
- 0:47Oh, dude.
- 0:48Nobody knew who she was.
- 0:51Nobody knew that she was a
- 0:52firefighter at one time.
- 0:54Nobody knew any of that stuff.
- 0:56Yeah.
- 0:56If only.
- 0:57It's crazy.
- 0:58If only.
- 1:01Um, so with that,
- 1:05you also had a couple other
- 1:07athletes there, a couple of teams.
- 1:10Yeah.
- 1:11So let's,
- 1:11let's break down what happened at
- 1:14North America semifinals and,
- 1:16and we'll get into the full like glory.
- 1:20That is what happened with
- 1:22Hattie over the weekend and
- 1:25how she kicked ass, uh,
- 1:27in everything she did.
- 1:29Um, Corey, Corey said,
- 1:31I feel like I knew
- 1:35everybody who listens to
- 1:36this show should have at
- 1:37least known she existed.
- 1:39Right.
- 1:40And I know is in the chat too.
- 1:42Kenneth was here for the
- 1:44Bali shows like every week.
- 1:46So Kenneth, Kenneth knows, um,
- 1:49some of us knew some of us did know.
- 1:52Um, so let's start with team.
- 1:55You had a couple of teams in the mix.
- 1:58Yeah,
- 1:58so I didn't have any teams in the
- 2:00West that I fully coached.
- 2:04One of our Ascend coaches
- 2:07owns an affiliate here in Houston,
- 2:10the other side of Houston from me,
- 2:12CrossFit Man Made.
- 2:13They had two teams.
- 2:15and I individually coach one
- 2:17of the men on one of the teams,
- 2:19Man Made Red.
- 2:20So I was there just
- 2:22generally assisting them
- 2:24and then also helping him
- 2:25as much as I could through
- 2:26the team events.
- 2:27And then Madison McElhaney
- 2:30and Taylor Patterson,
- 2:31I coached both of them,
- 2:32and they were on CrossFit, COTA,
- 2:35Iron View.
- 2:35So that was the team side of the house.
- 2:39So...
- 2:40like I said not a full team
- 2:42that I had coached
- 2:43throughout the season or
- 2:44anything like that but I
- 2:46had worked with them you
- 2:47know all through
- 2:47quarterfinals and stuff
- 2:49like that was just trying
- 2:50to be as helpful as I could
- 2:51so so how did how did that
- 2:53go down was it less
- 2:55pressure filled because you
- 2:57you weren't the only coach
- 2:59of that team-ish or was it
- 3:01just as pressure filled
- 3:03Yeah,
- 3:03it was a little less pressure filled.
- 3:05Um, the two man-made teams, their,
- 3:10their goal for the season
- 3:11was to make semifinals.
- 3:13So them, you know,
- 3:16we weren't going in with
- 3:17games aspirations or anything like that.
- 3:20So that was a little bit
- 3:22less stress in that sense,
- 3:23like just wanting them to
- 3:24perform as best as they could.
- 3:26And then Madison's team,
- 3:28they did have games aspirations.
- 3:31Um,
- 3:32And so that was just different.
- 3:35Like I,
- 3:35I didn't know the boys strengths
- 3:37and weaknesses intimately.
- 3:38Um, you know, they're super fit dudes,
- 3:42but I, rather than when I have a team,
- 3:46I coach fully.
- 3:49I try to kind of help call the plays with,
- 3:52you know,
- 3:52maybe the person who fills that
- 3:54team captain role.
- 3:55And there's always discussion,
- 3:56but I try to really help
- 3:58them fully strategize.
- 4:00Whereas for this,
- 4:01it was a little more conversation,
- 4:04seeing if they needed anything,
- 4:05helping where I could,
- 4:06little technical things,
- 4:08and then just really making sure,
- 4:09you know,
- 4:10Taylor and Madison were squared away.
- 4:13So I would say a little less
- 4:14pressure than if I had coached, you know,
- 4:17a full team with
- 4:19of four um but I still
- 4:21wanted them to do as best
- 4:22they could and you've been
- 4:24coaching madison for over a
- 4:25year now yes they they just
- 4:28missed 12th place yep um so
- 4:33they were a little bit out
- 4:33but um I had a little bobble on
- 4:38we just,
- 4:39we fell behind in that overhead
- 4:40squad event kind of early.
- 4:42Um,
- 4:44just couldn't make up the ground on the
- 4:45burpee workout, the point deficit.
- 4:48So the running workout hurt
- 4:50him a little bit.
- 4:51Madison and Taylor are,
- 4:53neither of them would claim
- 4:54to be track stars.
- 4:56Um, Madison has made, and, and she would,
- 4:58I think agree with this.
- 5:00Her endurance has made leaps
- 5:01and bounds in the last year.
- 5:02Um,
- 5:04Much to her disdain because
- 5:05I don't let her touch a
- 5:06barbell very often and I
- 5:07make her run and do a lot of burpees.
- 5:10But we've done what we needed to do.
- 5:13She complexed 215 still
- 5:16leading up to semifinals
- 5:17prep before we knew the workouts.
- 5:20She snatched 215.
- 5:23easily so a lot of her
- 5:25strength is still there we
- 5:26just really she was one of
- 5:27those athletes where we
- 5:29really have to push a lot
- 5:31of aerobic work to get
- 5:33improvement because she
- 5:34just doesn't gravitate
- 5:35toward it we don't have to
- 5:39dive deep into this because
- 5:41I really want to get to
- 5:42jacob and hattie um but
- 5:46madison was an mma fighter
- 5:49What is the difference
- 5:50between endurance for that,
- 5:53five-minute rounds, rest in between,
- 5:57to CrossFit endurance,
- 6:00like a 20-minute chipper?
- 6:02Yeah, I would say if you watch MMA fights,
- 6:06a lot of MMA fighters...
- 6:09have a different tempo to them.
- 6:11You know,
- 6:11you have MMA fighters who do like
- 6:14to push the pace.
- 6:15Maybe they come from a
- 6:16wrestling background.
- 6:17They're always moving, trying to grapple,
- 6:20constantly striking,
- 6:21lots of things like that.
- 6:22And then you have MMA fighters who,
- 6:25They kind of sit and wait
- 6:26and wait and wait, and then they go,
- 6:28and then they kind of sit and wait again.
- 6:30And I think – I haven't went
- 6:32back and watched a lot of
- 6:33Madison's fights or anything,
- 6:34but she's very much a
- 6:37high-force production,
- 6:38power output kind of organism by default.
- 6:43And if I had to guess,
- 6:45her style of MMA fighting
- 6:47was probably a little more
- 6:48calculated than she would go.
- 6:50and then she would rest,
- 6:50and then she would go.
- 6:52So she's still in a
- 6:52five-minute time window,
- 6:54but her bouts of effort are explosive,
- 6:57come down, explosive, come down,
- 6:59explosive, come down, versus a steady,
- 7:02sustained push to tempo.
- 7:05I think, and this is all by memory,
- 7:06so I could be wrong,
- 7:07but I believe her fighting
- 7:09career was undefeated until
- 7:11her last fight,
- 7:13pretty much all by knockout
- 7:16knockout or submission
- 7:19sounds about right that's
- 7:20what that's what I would
- 7:21kind of figure yeah um and
- 7:24fought her whole last fight
- 7:25with like a broken foot yes
- 7:27and still made it like went
- 7:29the distance yes like so
- 7:31she's complete badass she
- 7:33is tough as nails dude
- 7:35So, and she's doesn't have a big package,
- 7:38right?
- 7:38Like you look at her and
- 7:39you're not going to instantly go, Hey,
- 7:42that's, that's power output.
- 7:45Yeah, no, I mean, she's got strong,
- 7:48big legs and she's tall.
- 7:50Um, it's just a nervous system thing.
- 7:53She's just fast Twitch.
- 7:55Man,
- 7:56she's impressive just as an athlete
- 7:58overall.
- 7:59Yeah.
- 8:00So last question,
- 8:01because you've been working
- 8:02with her so long, um,
- 8:04is now the goal to go back
- 8:06to individual or to find a
- 8:09better team or make this
- 8:12team better any clue yet or
- 8:15do you need some time we
- 8:18discussed it a little bit
- 8:19she did voice to me she
- 8:20really enjoys team um so I
- 8:23think that is probably the
- 8:25direction we want to stay
- 8:27but in terms of different
- 8:29teams same team I haven't really
- 8:32dove into that or anything
- 8:33like that with her.
- 8:34When my athletes finish semifinals,
- 8:36you know,
- 8:37if they're not moving on to the games,
- 8:39I basically try to kick
- 8:40them out of the gym as much
- 8:41as I can and just let them relax.
- 8:44I don't want them consumed
- 8:45with CrossFit right now.
- 8:47Cause I know that's been
- 8:48everything on their mind
- 8:49for the last two months.
- 8:52Okay.
- 8:54So, so let's flip to the individual side.
- 8:58Do we want to, where do we want to start?
- 9:02We can go event by event or
- 9:04we can start with Jacob, I guess.
- 9:06Whatever you think flows better.
- 9:10Let's go event by event.
- 9:11All right.
- 9:13So it's Friday.
- 9:14We have the run, clean and jerk workout.
- 9:17Yep.
- 9:18You have Jacob on the men, Jacob Marlowe,
- 9:21and you have Hattie Cano on
- 9:22the women's side.
- 9:26Completely different athletes.
- 9:28Yeah.
- 9:30Like, and so as a coach,
- 9:33is that exciting for you
- 9:34that you get to like use
- 9:36all your toys and all your
- 9:38tools or is it harder
- 9:41because they are different?
- 9:45I don't know.
- 9:46I don't know that I've ever
- 9:47really thought of it like that.
- 9:48I try to help them maximize
- 9:50each event based on their
- 9:53strengths given the test
- 9:55that's being given.
- 9:58I mean anybody who looked at
- 9:59the leaderboard or watched
- 10:00Jacob do that event,
- 10:01that's obviously not his
- 10:02jam right now versus Hattie.
- 10:05She did very, very well in that workout.
- 10:07So
- 10:09It's just different and it's
- 10:10fun to watch them do
- 10:12different events that lend
- 10:14more toward maybe their
- 10:15strengths or weaknesses.
- 10:18I've never really thought
- 10:19about it from the sense of
- 10:22what I can give them since
- 10:24the test is the same and
- 10:25then I'm just trying to
- 10:27maximize their ability to
- 10:28complete the test given
- 10:30their kind of stats.
- 10:34Okay.
- 10:35So...
- 10:37I think the men were up first.
- 10:41They're going to be in our world.
- 10:43That's fine.
- 10:44So Jacob goes into this.
- 10:46It's damage control because
- 10:48you know this is not his jam.
- 10:50Yeah.
- 10:50What's your advice to Jacob?
- 10:54So he did that workout in
- 10:55testing here in Houston.
- 10:58Barely finished it.
- 11:00Walked here in Houston when he did it.
- 11:03So we went into that workout with...
- 11:05The only thing I told him
- 11:06was make yourself proud.
- 11:08Like, I don't care.
- 11:10I knew the field was gonna
- 11:12do what it was gonna do.
- 11:14We can't change how fast and
- 11:16how long you can run that fast right now.
- 11:20So I told him, you know,
- 11:22pull yourself up the stairs
- 11:24to save your legs.
- 11:26I told him the pace I wanted
- 11:27him to aim to hold on the
- 11:29runs based on what we did in testing.
- 11:32And then a little bit of
- 11:32variance for the accounting,
- 11:34the stairs and the fatigue.
- 11:36And I just told him to go
- 11:37out there and make himself proud.
- 11:39That was it.
- 11:41And at the end of that,
- 11:42did he make himself proud?
- 11:44Yeah, he finished the event.
- 11:45He didn't get last.
- 11:47He didn't walk.
- 11:48So he stayed tough through
- 11:50the whole thing.
- 11:51He stayed tough on that last
- 11:52round when he had to run, I know,
- 11:54harder than he wanted to to
- 11:55get back to the bar and
- 11:56finish the workout.
- 11:57So I was proud of him.
- 11:59I was proud of him for that workout.
- 12:01And that workout kind of
- 12:05highlights something that
- 12:08we can talk about about
- 12:09Jacob kind of toward the
- 12:10end of the conversation and
- 12:12like his future maybe.
- 12:15So then Hattie's up.
- 12:17Hattie's in the big girl
- 12:19heat because she came in
- 12:22qualified sixth or seventh?
- 12:25Sixth, yeah, after the penalties.
- 12:27Yeah, so she was way up there with,
- 12:30and yet still nobody knew who she was.
- 12:35She goes into the event and
- 12:37it's actually probably,
- 12:39it's a good event for her, right?
- 12:41It's a great event for her.
- 12:43So what is the conversation
- 12:45between you and her?
- 12:46I told her,
- 12:48so she had a pace for the run
- 12:50that we were going to aim
- 12:51to hold based off what we
- 12:53had done in testing.
- 12:55And we knew the plan was
- 12:57very quick singles on the clean and jerk.
- 13:00And I told her before the event, I said,
- 13:02run the first one at your pace.
- 13:05or around your pace.
- 13:07And then, you know,
- 13:08because there was a lot of question,
- 13:09how am I going to feel after the stairs?
- 13:10I had made her run.
- 13:12There were some hills and
- 13:14stairs behind her house in Canada.
- 13:16They call them the coolies.
- 13:17I don't know why they call them that.
- 13:18I don't know what that means.
- 13:20But I had made her run those
- 13:21when they announced they
- 13:22were going to Carson
- 13:23because I had a feeling
- 13:24they were going to run the
- 13:25berm to get her prepared for that.
- 13:29So I said, hey, go run.
- 13:30Run the first one around the pace.
- 13:33then you're gonna know
- 13:34everything you need to know
- 13:35about how to approach the
- 13:36run after that first run
- 13:37you're gonna know you're
- 13:38gonna get informed on
- 13:40everything you need to know
- 13:42and then you just need to
- 13:43run your race like don't
- 13:45worry about what anybody
- 13:45else is doing it's five
- 13:46round workout run your race
- 13:49and you know be tough at
- 13:51the end so that was the
- 13:52advice I gave her for that one and they
- 13:56all came out way hotter than
- 13:58the pace but she's a good
- 14:01enough runner that she
- 14:02could hold on to that pace
- 14:05nice and she's she's good
- 14:07at moving a moderate
- 14:08barbell too right she's
- 14:09great at it yeah she's
- 14:12great at moving a water
- 14:12barbell uh kenneth yes
- 14:16hattie is canadian you know
- 14:18the show we are uh canadian
- 14:21bias um by nature
- 14:25I'm surprised you had to ask.
- 14:27Get us together, Kenneth.
- 14:31So where'd she finish in that first event?
- 14:34I should pull that up.
- 14:35Third.
- 14:36Third.
- 14:37So off to a bang and start.
- 14:40Great start.
- 14:41And you're done for the day.
- 14:44Yeah.
- 14:44And that was huge, really, I think,
- 14:47for the weekend and also
- 14:50for me as a coach.
- 14:51Yeah.
- 14:53especially for Hattie.
- 14:55I mean,
- 14:55obviously Jacob didn't have a great start,
- 14:56but the goal wasn't,
- 14:59we knew Jacob wasn't going
- 15:00to be qualifying for the games this year.
- 15:02Like that wasn't the goal we
- 15:03went into semifinals with,
- 15:04but last year at semifinals with Madison,
- 15:10Hattie, Kelly, in particular,
- 15:15we had a really, really slow day one.
- 15:18We were,
- 15:19we did not get off the blocks fast
- 15:22at all.
- 15:23And so as a coach,
- 15:25something that was on my
- 15:26mind a lot was I wanted
- 15:30Hattie to come in on that
- 15:32first event and have a good
- 15:34start to the weekend.
- 15:35And then you get to ride
- 15:36that into the next day.
- 15:37There's no second event that
- 15:39day that maybe doesn't go
- 15:40well or anything like that.
- 15:42You have a good finish to
- 15:43that first event and you
- 15:45get to carry that into the next day.
- 15:46So I was stoked for that.
- 15:48So how do you treat the rest of the day?
- 15:52Is it...
- 15:54Is it just recovery?
- 15:56Is it get some fuel?
- 15:59Do you have a scheduled plan
- 16:02for the rest of the day now?
- 16:04So they finished that event.
- 16:06I want to say it was kind of
- 16:07getting into the evening a little bit.
- 16:10And then, yeah,
- 16:12I had them leave the venue
- 16:14as soon as I could get them
- 16:14to stop talking to people.
- 16:16And they got body work done.
- 16:18by the body work people that were there.
- 16:20And then I basically ushered
- 16:21them to their vehicles and
- 16:23had them all go home and relax.
- 16:26And then I stayed at the
- 16:27venue because the teams had
- 16:31a brief that night, maybe,
- 16:33or was that Saturday?
- 16:34One more event and a brief probably.
- 16:36Well, yeah, the teams had events.
- 16:37Yeah.
- 16:38So yeah.
- 16:39Cause the team event was after that.
- 16:40And then I think they had a
- 16:41brief even after that,
- 16:44the days all kind of blurred together,
- 16:45to be honest.
- 16:49So what's crazy, Jody,
- 16:51is it's really Canada to
- 16:54Bali to Canada to Houston
- 16:59to Canada to Bali to Canada to Carson.
- 17:03Yeah.
- 17:06Yeah.
- 17:07She's been all over this world.
- 17:09She has.
- 17:09Oh, yeah.
- 17:11And she stopped in Egypt to
- 17:12win a comp this year, too.
- 17:15But nobody still knew about her.
- 17:16Yeah.
- 17:17Yeah.
- 17:19Okay.
- 17:20So then you get up the next day,
- 17:21you come in for event to
- 17:23event to is front squat,
- 17:27double under total bar.
- 17:28There we go.
- 17:30And again, two different athletes.
- 17:34Yeah.
- 17:36How does Jacob attack this?
- 17:38So for Jacob,
- 17:39that event was break the
- 17:41double unders to stay calm
- 17:43and keep your heart rate down.
- 17:45Two sets on the total bar.
- 17:48um and then front squat
- 17:50faster than anybody else in
- 17:51the field because jacob's
- 17:53done 405 for a triple on
- 17:54front squat jacob's
- 17:56squatting power is stupid
- 17:59So that was his general game plan.
- 18:03He went a little slower than
- 18:05he did in testing.
- 18:07He actually did that workout
- 18:08twice in 24 hours in testing.
- 18:11That's kind of a funny story.
- 18:13He did it the first time and
- 18:14he pretty much bonked the
- 18:16attempt and did not do very well.
- 18:18And then the next day he
- 18:19came to the gym and said he
- 18:20wanted to do it again.
- 18:21So we set it up like he
- 18:22would do it on the floor
- 18:23and we did it again and he did it again.
- 18:25In the low 13s, I want to say.
- 18:27So yeah,
- 18:28he did 100 front squats at 225 in
- 18:3124 hours.
- 18:34So yeah,
- 18:34he did a little bit worse than
- 18:38what he did in testing the second time,
- 18:40but he tripped on his dubs
- 18:41a little bit more.
- 18:42So for him,
- 18:43that event was about breaking
- 18:45up the double-unders in the
- 18:46total bar to keep his heart
- 18:48rate low and then trying to
- 18:51make money on the front
- 18:51squats because he can move
- 18:53the bar so well.
- 18:55Most of the field moved the
- 18:56bar pretty well, I would say.
- 18:58Obviously,
- 18:59the best guys crushed the barbell as well,
- 19:02but that was just how we
- 19:03needed to approach it for
- 19:04him because if he would
- 19:05have went in trying to go –
- 19:07unbroken double-unders,
- 19:08big sets on the total bar,
- 19:10he would have ended up
- 19:12waiting a really long time
- 19:13to pick up the bar because
- 19:14his heart rate would have been so high.
- 19:15Yeah.
- 19:18And he finished where on that one?
- 19:20What did he finish on that one?
- 19:22I don't remember.
- 19:24I knew until you asked me.
- 19:25Let me pull up the leaderboard here.
- 19:29I got it here.
- 19:32Just have to find him.
- 19:35Men...
- 19:3825th, 14.06.
- 19:39Yep.
- 19:42There it is.
- 19:45Okay.
- 19:46And then Hattie comes up.
- 19:48So how did she approach it?
- 19:50I love that we're going to
- 19:52talk about this because it
- 19:54was so different than everybody else.
- 19:56So Hattie's strategy was
- 19:59unbroken double-unders,
- 20:008.75 on the total bar with
- 20:03a super short rest.
- 20:05And then I told her,
- 20:07we're going to do the first
- 20:08round of 10 unbroken.
- 20:09And then after that, you make the call.
- 20:13If you want to go 6-4, you go 6-4.
- 20:15If you want to do 10, you do all 10.
- 20:16The only rule of this game
- 20:17is there's no standing around.
- 20:19And she went 10, 10, 6-4, 6-4, 10.
- 20:20And she went 8-7-5 on every
- 20:22set of total bar.
- 20:24Maybe she went...
- 20:31Yeah,
- 20:31I think she still went 875 on the
- 20:33fifth round.
- 20:34She tripped twice on the
- 20:38last round in the 100 double-unders.
- 20:41and if you listen to the
- 20:42podcast world if you listen
- 20:44to the media everybody said
- 20:46you had to go unbroken on
- 20:47the front squats to do well
- 20:49and she got seventh place
- 20:50on that workout and if she
- 20:51didn't trip twice on the
- 20:52double unders because when
- 20:53we did testing rounds she
- 20:55did the double unders
- 20:55unbroken every time if she
- 20:57didn't trip twice on the
- 20:57dumbbells she would or on
- 20:58the double unders she
- 21:00wouldn't have been in that
- 21:01race at the end which was
- 21:02also super cool but uh and
- 21:04she would have gotten third
- 21:06or fourth in that workout
- 21:07breaking the front squats twice
- 21:10Was that the dive or the slide?
- 21:13The dive.
- 21:15She got seventh and lost to
- 21:19fourth by like eight-tenths of a second.
- 21:23They all jumped over the
- 21:24finish line at the same time.
- 21:27Yeah, that was crazy.
- 21:29It was awesome.
- 21:32Okay,
- 21:33so then you have event two on Saturday.
- 21:37Yep.
- 21:39there we had that's the rope
- 21:41climb echo bike yeah I've
- 21:43been three box box jump
- 21:45overs yes um again I'm
- 21:50assuming two different
- 21:51strategies two different
- 21:53strategies um well yes I
- 21:57would say they varied by
- 21:58degree not necessarily kind
- 22:00for jacob it was we need to
- 22:02be tough on the bike and
- 22:03aim to hold that pace and then
- 22:07try to recover on the box jump overs.
- 22:09He's not the tallest guy ever.
- 22:11And actually, when he has to step down,
- 22:13it tends to blow up his legs a bunch,
- 22:14especially on that big box they use.
- 22:19And that one didn't go, I would say,
- 22:21as well as he would have liked, probably.
- 22:24But...
- 22:26he beat his training time by
- 22:29two and a half minutes or
- 22:30something stupid.
- 22:32Wow.
- 22:32So, you know, can't complain about that.
- 22:35Um, but that one, yeah,
- 22:37was 39th at a 1208 and just
- 22:43the fitness isn't there yet on that one.
- 22:46The legless were nothing.
- 22:48It was just the fitness on the bike.
- 22:50So then Hattie attacks it.
- 22:53Um,
- 22:57she's a smaller athlete I'm
- 22:59assuming the bike is not
- 23:01hammered for her it's not
- 23:04hammered in the same way
- 23:06but I gave her a tough
- 23:08target pace and if you
- 23:09actually I don't know if
- 23:10you can tell on the live
- 23:11stream if you watch she was
- 23:12getting off the bike at the
- 23:13same time or sooner than
- 23:14abigail domit every time
- 23:16who's a much taller athlete
- 23:18and very powerful um had
- 23:20he's good on the bike
- 23:23and for her though her
- 23:25legless rope climbs are
- 23:26very strong and I don't
- 23:29know if this is public
- 23:29knowledge at this point it
- 23:30should be because I think
- 23:31all the athletes know about
- 23:32this that rope is not 15
- 23:33feet the the rope they use
- 23:36at regionals is not 15 feet
- 23:39the rig's not that tall
- 23:40it's probably to the cross
- 23:41beam 14 feet um so knowing that
- 23:48our theme on that basically
- 23:49was we're going to win on
- 23:50the rope and the box jump
- 23:52overs because people are,
- 23:53there is going to be a
- 23:54decent amount of athletes
- 23:55who take a pause before
- 23:56they get on that rope and
- 23:58we're running our transitions and we're,
- 24:00we're fearless up the rope every time.
- 24:02And that's exactly what she did.
- 24:05So she finishes fourth on that event.
- 24:08Yup.
- 24:09And at this point she is now
- 24:11the leader in the clubhouse
- 24:13going into the final day.
- 24:15Yes.
- 24:18So that's got to have all kinds of fields,
- 24:21right?
- 24:25Yeah, to a point.
- 24:29The theme Hattie and I had
- 24:31going into this weekend was
- 24:33we're going to focus on ourselves.
- 24:35we are going to do our game plan.
- 24:38We are going to execute what
- 24:39we know we need to execute.
- 24:40We're going to run the race
- 24:41our way and we're not going
- 24:43to worry about what other
- 24:44people are doing.
- 24:45And we're just going to keep
- 24:46our head down and focus on
- 24:47things one event at a time.
- 24:50As she was the leader in the clubhouse,
- 24:53it was hard not for that to
- 24:55be made aware to her, but she had,
- 24:57she had no intention of
- 24:58looking at the leaderboard all weekend.
- 25:01She would finish an event and,
- 25:03And she finished the second
- 25:04event and asked me,
- 25:07is that good enough for
- 25:09what we're trying to do?
- 25:10And I said, yeah, you're fine.
- 25:11Don't worry about it.
- 25:12Because I knew she got top 10.
- 25:16But yeah,
- 25:19our whole kind of mindset and our
- 25:23conversations was we're
- 25:25running Hattie's race.
- 25:26We're not worried about how
- 25:27other people are going to
- 25:28do this because they're not you.
- 25:30So was that, that was the slide, right?
- 25:33That was the slide.
- 25:34Yeah.
- 25:34And that got her a couple places.
- 25:37Yeah.
- 25:38One, if not two.
- 25:40Yeah.
- 25:40I think it might've been two.
- 25:41It's hard to know,
- 25:42but it definitely got her one.
- 25:45When you see an athlete of yours,
- 25:49give it up for points.
- 25:52Like
- 25:54does does that get you more
- 25:57excited or the where she
- 25:59finished get you more
- 26:00excited oh give it up for
- 26:03points 100 so when you're
- 26:06trying to make the crossfit
- 26:07games as a coach I want to
- 26:11see I want to see that edge
- 26:15a little bit and she showed
- 26:17it the first event
- 26:20So in the last round, not to jump around,
- 26:23but in the last round,
- 26:24this is when I knew we were
- 26:26going this weekend.
- 26:28The last round of the workout,
- 26:31she finishes the fourth
- 26:32round of clean and jerks.
- 26:34And her and another lady,
- 26:35I want to say Lindsay something.
- 26:37I don't know her last name.
- 26:39Lindsay was kind of catching
- 26:40her on the run.
- 26:41But Hattie was getting off
- 26:42the clean and jerks first.
- 26:45And they,
- 26:46she was running out of the tunnel
- 26:47and I ran from the soccer
- 26:49stadium over to the top of
- 26:51the tunnel because we were
- 26:52allowed to go to the soccer stadium,
- 26:53like the edge of it and watch them.
- 26:56And I yelled at her to hold
- 27:00her pace and then to pass
- 27:03on the second straightaway before you,
- 27:06as you come,
- 27:07like the long side of the soccer field.
- 27:10And that's exactly what she did.
- 27:14She ran her pace and her and
- 27:16the other girl were right
- 27:17next to each other.
- 27:18They came down the stairs
- 27:19and Hattie got like a 20
- 27:21step lead on that
- 27:23straightaway so that she
- 27:24had enough time to make
- 27:26sure she got the barbell work done,
- 27:27which in hindsight worked out really,
- 27:29really well because
- 27:30apparently Abigail Domet
- 27:33sprinted through the tunnel
- 27:35because she was behind both
- 27:36of them on that
- 27:37straightaway and then was
- 27:38right with Hattie on the cleaning jerks.
- 27:40But
- 27:42The fact that when I told her to do that,
- 27:45being 20 plus minutes into
- 27:46that workout and she did it,
- 27:49I knew she was ready to lay
- 27:53it out there all weekend.
- 27:58And I love that.
- 27:59When I saw that,
- 28:00when you see someone die for points,
- 28:02it just makes you want to
- 28:05root for them even more.
- 28:07And I was already rooting for her.
- 28:12So, so you get to the end of day two,
- 28:15she's, you know, if there was one,
- 28:18she would be wearing the
- 28:19leader's Jersey and you
- 28:22still have half the event to go.
- 28:25Yeah.
- 28:26Weird feeling one day, but half the event,
- 28:30right.
- 28:31It was different.
- 28:33Uh,
- 28:33Jody Lynn says the edge definitely need
- 28:36to kick in high gear with
- 28:38this strong bunch of gals.
- 28:40Definitely.
- 28:44So it was not Hattie's
- 28:48desire to look at the leaderboard,
- 28:50but you as a coach are
- 28:51looking at the leaderboard.
- 28:53Oh, yeah.
- 28:54You know she's in the pole position.
- 28:56Yeah.
- 28:58Does it change?
- 29:00How do you make sure it
- 29:01doesn't change your game plan?
- 29:04Well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
- 29:06I mean...
- 29:09we went into the weekend
- 29:10with the mindset of we're
- 29:11going to do our game plan
- 29:12and our strategy and
- 29:13execute the way we know we
- 29:14should do these workouts.
- 29:17Don't get to halftime if
- 29:18it's working and change it.
- 29:20Right.
- 29:21Well,
- 29:21apparently you're not a Chicago bear
- 29:22fan because we would get a big lead.
- 29:25And then at halftime they
- 29:27would go to a conservative
- 29:29mode and then lose the game.
- 29:31Gotcha.
- 29:31Yeah.
- 29:31We were not trying to do that.
- 29:33So that's,
- 29:34that's just what I'm used to
- 29:35watching every Sunday in the fall.
- 29:37Yeah.
- 29:38So that's why I had to ask.
- 29:40Fair enough.
- 29:41Yeah.
- 29:41No, I, I,
- 29:43my mindset was to keep
- 29:44approaching things the same
- 29:45way we had all weekend,
- 29:46the way we were warming up
- 29:47when we were warming up,
- 29:49what we were doing,
- 29:50the conversations we were having,
- 29:52like reinforcing to her,
- 29:54our game plan is our game
- 29:56plan tunnel vision.
- 29:58And then you can race at the end.
- 30:01Yeah, exactly.
- 30:02Corey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it,
- 30:03man.
- 30:03Like leave it the hell alone.
- 30:06Yeah.
- 30:08Yeah.
- 30:09If the Ferrari is running well and winning,
- 30:12don't touch the engine.
- 30:13Don't touch it.
- 30:15Don't do anything different.
- 30:17So, but yeah,
- 30:18it was an interesting feeling
- 30:19going into Sunday with, you know,
- 30:24300 points up for grab.
- 30:27And then Corey,
- 30:29just as another football fan,
- 30:31the saints game plan used to be,
- 30:32if it ain't broke, break it.
- 30:34Ah, classic.
- 30:35Yeah.
- 30:37so so now you go into sunday
- 30:41and we start off with the
- 30:42handstand workout and I
- 30:45remember talking to to
- 30:46hattie a long time ago she
- 30:48loves being on her hands
- 30:50she's great on her hands it
- 30:53I think she told me it's
- 30:54her favorite thing she's
- 30:56really good on her hands
- 30:57like really good on her
- 30:58hands so then my only
- 31:00question going into sunday
- 31:02was how is she on the row well yeah i
- 31:07yeah I think so I mean the
- 31:09girls who beat her if you
- 31:11go back and look it was the
- 31:14row pace you know I mean
- 31:16alex kazan was rowing a
- 31:18freaking 145 which is crazy
- 31:21um but she would catch
- 31:23girls on her hands
- 31:24especially when they had
- 31:25the down and back section
- 31:26the the middle 60 down 60
- 31:29back um so for me with that
- 31:33one it was just
- 31:34know I posted in the stands
- 31:35behind her rower and I was
- 31:37just telling her the pace
- 31:39to try to hold because I
- 31:41knew she could hold it and
- 31:42it's okay like they're
- 31:44gonna get off before you
- 31:45it's fine don't don't freak
- 31:48out don't get stressed out
- 31:49stay in your lane do your
- 31:51thing right so she finishes
- 31:55eighth in that event correct
- 31:59Um,
- 32:00so all solid top 10 finishes at this
- 32:02point.
- 32:04Um, in fact,
- 32:07all eight or above and they
- 32:10take positions.
- 32:11That's pretty much a good
- 32:12way to make sure you're
- 32:13going to get a game spot.
- 32:14Yeah.
- 32:15Yeah.
- 32:16Um, so at the same time now, Jacob goes,
- 32:20yes, I guess is he can pull the chain.
- 32:22Oh yeah.
- 32:22Yeah.
- 32:24Yeah.
- 32:25How is he on his hands?
- 32:27He's consistent.
- 32:29He's not super fast yet.
- 32:34He's,
- 32:34he has very good handstand walk
- 32:36endurance.
- 32:38Uh, if you said, Hey, you know, 25, 30, 40,
- 32:4350 foot unbroken sections for 200 feet,
- 32:49he would without much of a problem.
- 32:55But we have some room to go on speed.
- 32:59Okay.
- 33:00I was really proud of him
- 33:02for that workout because
- 33:05the third workout,
- 33:06we didn't have a lot of
- 33:08urgency in our transitions.
- 33:11And he had a lot of urgency
- 33:13in his transitions,
- 33:14and he was going out there
- 33:16to compete on Sunday.
- 33:19So it was good.
- 33:20Yeah,
- 33:21the one thing I noticed with Jacob is
- 33:22he'd seem like a different
- 33:23athlete Sunday compared to
- 33:25the other two days.
- 33:26Well, if we look at those events.
- 33:29He knew some home runs were
- 33:30coming down the pipe.
- 33:31Yeah.
- 33:32Yeah.
- 33:35So, okay.
- 33:37So then we go into event five,
- 33:39the snatch ladder.
- 33:43Let's go Jacob first because
- 33:44that's something he does very well.
- 33:47Oh, yeah.
- 33:49Uh, what was,
- 33:51what was your pacing strategy
- 33:52with him to make sure he
- 33:53didn't blow up on that?
- 33:56I told him I wanted to,
- 33:58I didn't want him to push
- 34:01one 85 through one 20 or two 25.
- 34:03I wanted him to try to be in
- 34:05a position where he could
- 34:06get to two 45 and just drop the hammer.
- 34:10Um,
- 34:11Jacob.
- 34:12So he missed two at two 45 in this event.
- 34:15He flew a little too close
- 34:16to the sun and he still had
- 34:18the fourth best time.
- 34:20Um,
- 34:21Jacob's advantage in a workout like
- 34:23that is if he gets the bar over his head,
- 34:28his lockout is very, very good.
- 34:31So the two he missed, he got spit out from,
- 34:33he got too far behind the bar too early.
- 34:36So it was in front a little
- 34:37bit and he didn't quite finish.
- 34:38Um,
- 34:41But for him, it was more,
- 34:43don't bite off more than we
- 34:44can chew on the higher rep bars.
- 34:47And then try to really punch
- 34:48it on the four and the two
- 34:50at the heavier weights that
- 34:51you know you can hit faster
- 34:53than most of the field.
- 34:56And we had a fourth place
- 34:58with two misses at 245.
- 35:00If he doesn't miss those at 245,
- 35:02he's not as fast as Colton.
- 35:03What did Brent get?
- 35:07Brent was only a second or two behind.
- 35:10So he would have just moved
- 35:12up one spot and gotten third,
- 35:13but his time would have
- 35:14been around the 530 mark or the 540 mark.
- 35:19So then we go to the females,
- 35:22and I would be remiss to
- 35:23not ask you as a coach how stupid,
- 35:28stupid Olivia Kerstetter was.
- 35:30That was really cool to watch, man.
- 35:33Literally,
- 35:34Jamie and I were texting during
- 35:36that event.
- 35:38She texted me like, wait,
- 35:40did she skip over a bar?
- 35:43No, man.
- 35:43She destroyed that event.
- 35:46That's how fast it was.
- 35:47You think she missed a bar?
- 35:49I will say,
- 35:50just because I've heard this
- 35:51start to be kicked around,
- 35:55her doing that well in that
- 35:56workout is not an argument for Z-score.
- 36:01CrossFit is jack of all trades,
- 36:03master of none.
- 36:06We don't need to overly
- 36:08reward people who can do
- 36:10exponentially freaky things.
- 36:12It's cool, and she's still got 100 points,
- 36:14as she should,
- 36:16but that is not what this sport is.
- 36:20We don't need to change the
- 36:21scoring system to reflect it,
- 36:23because if you do,
- 36:24you're just going to end up
- 36:24with a field of specialists.
- 36:28That's not the point.
- 36:29I agree.
- 36:30I'll let that go.
- 36:33Yeah.
- 36:34I've bashed on Z-score a ton.
- 36:38I think it's interesting.
- 36:39I don't think that it's not
- 36:40necessarily something that
- 36:41can be used in the future,
- 36:42but I'm not a believer as of right now.
- 36:47Your reward for doing so
- 36:48well in an event is that
- 36:49you can take your foot off
- 36:50the brake at the end of
- 36:51that event and save yourself for later.
- 36:57And get 100 points.
- 36:58Yeah.
- 36:58Yeah.
- 37:00But she also could have done
- 37:01that in this event and
- 37:02still got 100 points.
- 37:04Right.
- 37:06But exactly.
- 37:08She could have went a minute
- 37:10slower and still won the event.
- 37:11Ricky Garrard could have
- 37:13walked his last 800 in Oceania,
- 37:17but he didn't.
- 37:18So whatever, right?
- 37:21And that's your choice as an
- 37:22athlete at that point.
- 37:23Yeah.
- 37:24If you've got half of a
- 37:26football field lead on somebody in a run,
- 37:28you can relax.
- 37:31If you don't though, that's on you.
- 37:35My son, exactly.
- 37:36So the fact that how to can
- 37:39you finished fifth in this
- 37:41event with people like
- 37:43Olivia Kirsten and Kelsey
- 37:46keel and Danny Spiegel,
- 37:49that was impressive.
- 37:52She's strong,
- 37:53she's fit and she's technical.
- 37:57She reminded me so much of
- 38:01Elisa Fuliano's run.
- 38:05Oh, really?
- 38:06In Europe.
- 38:07Just smooth as fast.
- 38:11And technically hitting it every time.
- 38:14Yep.
- 38:16I mean,
- 38:16we had done that event here in Houston.
- 38:20We did it with bars set up
- 38:22because that was the rumor, right?
- 38:25And actually Kelly was there that day.
- 38:27Kelly judged her.
- 38:30So we had a full little setup,
- 38:33gave her reps and no reps
- 38:34and all that stuff.
- 38:36And I knew that was going to
- 38:39be a really good event for Hattie,
- 38:40even though I don't think
- 38:42anybody else in the field
- 38:43would have thought it would be.
- 38:46And she beat her training time,
- 38:48changing her weights by quite a margin,
- 38:52I think.
- 38:56No, she had the exact same time,
- 38:57but she had to change her weights.
- 39:01Can't ask for anything more than that.
- 39:03Yeah, so she moved the bars faster.
- 39:07So I want to finish this thread,
- 39:09and we'll come back to
- 39:09Jacob after this is done.
- 39:11Because he really finished strong,
- 39:12and I want to give him his due for that.
- 39:16But at this point,
- 39:18Hattie crushes the snatch ladder,
- 39:20takes fifth,
- 39:22And if you look at the leaderboard,
- 39:24she now has clinched a spot to the games.
- 39:30She doesn't even have to go
- 39:31out on the floor for the
- 39:33last event to have a spot to the games.
- 39:36That's pretty cool.
- 39:39So when she goes out there,
- 39:42does she know this?
- 39:46We didn't discuss it.
- 39:48I think she knew that it was
- 39:51highly unlikely anything could happen.
- 39:54I don't know how much she
- 39:56was aware of the points
- 39:58rather than the placings, but I,
- 40:02I know she wanted to go out
- 40:03on a good foot too.
- 40:04Right.
- 40:05We didn't talk before the event and like,
- 40:07and just, you know, coaster in,
- 40:10we were going out there to
- 40:11do the same thing we'd been
- 40:12doing every other event.
- 40:14she had she had 105 point
- 40:16lead a ninth place going
- 40:18into the last event so
- 40:20there was no way possible
- 40:21for for ninth place to get
- 40:24above her yeah the reason I
- 40:29ask is the last event
- 40:31becomes her worst event
- 40:33yeah so did any part of her mind relax
- 40:42In that last event.
- 40:43And I know, and I'll say it,
- 40:45I don't want you to say it
- 40:46because we don't need any vendettas.
- 40:49There was a shitty call of a
- 40:52no rep in the middle of
- 40:53that workout for her.
- 40:55There was, but... And again,
- 40:58I don't want you to say this publicly.
- 41:00I'm saying it publicly.
- 41:02There was a shitty call and
- 41:04made her go back...
- 41:06instead of back a foot to go
- 41:09behind the line,
- 41:10go back a full section back.
- 41:12And when your grip is shot,
- 41:14that is a huge penalty.
- 41:18I think for me,
- 41:20where my head is at with that,
- 41:21and I've thought about that a lot,
- 41:26whether the call was
- 41:27whatever the call was, that's actually,
- 41:30that's on me, not her.
- 41:33So the rule is if you appeal in a final,
- 41:35you have to appeal on the floor.
- 41:38And so she gets through the event,
- 41:40or she's doing the event.
- 41:42The no rep happens.
- 41:44She comes, you know, she has to stop.
- 41:46She's looks at me in the crowd.
- 41:47I'm yelling at her one section at a time.
- 41:49Don't be risky.
- 41:51Just get it done.
- 41:52Cause I know we're good.
- 41:53Just finish.
- 41:54It's okay.
- 41:55Right.
- 41:56And I could tell she was
- 41:57upset a little bit.
- 41:59And I was so focused on
- 42:01because the goal had been
- 42:02to come and make the games.
- 42:04So when she finishes,
- 42:06as soon as I could get her attention,
- 42:09I just, I told her, I said,
- 42:10how do you're going to the games?
- 42:12It's okay.
- 42:13We did what we came here to do.
- 42:17I should have just told her to appeal it.
- 42:20Right, wrong, or indifferent.
- 42:21Because I couldn't see her
- 42:24foot from where I was.
- 42:26right?
- 42:26I was, she was coming toward me,
- 42:28I'm up in the stands.
- 42:30And if she would have appealed,
- 42:32and it would have been
- 42:32they'd have said no,
- 42:33the the call on the floor stands,
- 42:36then it wouldn't change anything.
- 42:38And if it would have changed something,
- 42:39it would have changed
- 42:40something for the better for us.
- 42:41So for me, I walk away from that.
- 42:43And I was actually really, really,
- 42:45really upset with myself
- 42:46that night about it,
- 42:48because that's my job,
- 42:50as a coach is to remember those things.
- 42:54And
- 42:56analogy I made right and
- 42:57this is right wrong or
- 42:58indifferent people like the
- 43:00whatever I don't care what
- 43:01people say is but belichick
- 43:02and saban don't forget they
- 43:04know when to throw a flag
- 43:05in the playoffs so whether
- 43:08the call on the floor was
- 43:09right or wrong whether she
- 43:11stepped on the line or not
- 43:14the the end result of that
- 43:16is completely on me not on
- 43:18anybody else but if there's
- 43:21a time to make that mistake
- 43:23it's after you've already clinched
- 43:25Sure, yeah, I can't be mad about that.
- 43:27So now you've learned this
- 43:30in a situation that doesn't
- 43:32affect her games ticket.
- 43:33Right.
- 43:35And moving forward, now you won't forget.
- 43:39Yeah, I won't forget that ever again.
- 43:43Yeah,
- 43:43and I will say from a performance setting,
- 43:49obviously the callback was
- 43:50really costly on her grip.
- 43:54that workout didn't go to plan from what,
- 43:57you know,
- 43:57we had tested and how we were feeling.
- 43:59And that's something, you know,
- 44:00she and I discussed a bit,
- 44:01but we're going to talk
- 44:02about a lot more as we move
- 44:04into games training and things like that.
- 44:07And how we want to attack
- 44:09what we think might have
- 44:10been the issue there.
- 44:11Was it fitness?
- 44:14Was it a particular movement?
- 44:15I mean, obviously it wasn't fitness.
- 44:17It's not a fitness test,
- 44:18but was it a particular
- 44:19movement or was it,
- 44:21where we were mentally at
- 44:23the end of the competition, right?
- 44:25Like those kinds of things
- 44:26and that stuff she and I will dive into.
- 44:29Um, but I, I definitely, yeah.
- 44:3423rd on that was we,
- 44:35we didn't go into the weekend knowing,
- 44:37okay, this is,
- 44:38this is going to be our one, right?
- 44:41Um,
- 44:41she had done testing intervals of it
- 44:43and put up very competitive times.
- 44:45So sometimes shit just happens.
- 44:51But if that no rep doesn't
- 44:54happen and she doesn't have
- 44:57to pick up the dumbbells
- 44:58twice and move them back a full thing,
- 45:02she doesn't finish 23rd either.
- 45:05Scott,
- 45:06if she got over the line less than a
- 45:08second faster, she doesn't finish 23rd.
- 45:10If you go look at the times for the event.
- 45:14Yeah.
- 45:14Well, like even with all that, like, yeah.
- 45:19Yeah.
- 45:20yeah so so then you finish
- 45:25the weekend you've achieved
- 45:27your goal but your your
- 45:30finishing event is not
- 45:32optimal sure she's
- 45:35interviewed after the event
- 45:37and they ask her what she's
- 45:38going to work on between
- 45:39now and the games and she
- 45:41immediately says heavy lunges
- 45:44Yeah.
- 45:45Because that is what a competitor does.
- 45:48They don't think about the stuff they did.
- 45:50Well,
- 45:51they think about the one thing they
- 45:52did wrong.
- 45:55How do you now talk to her
- 45:59about that to say, listen,
- 46:01we accomplished something
- 46:02really good and we're going to,
- 46:04we're going to fix some
- 46:05holes between now and the games.
- 46:08I mean, it's just that, really.
- 46:10You know,
- 46:11when she came back to the athlete area,
- 46:14we talked and she was a
- 46:16little sad about it.
- 46:19And I just said, you know,
- 46:20we did what we came here to do.
- 46:25And as any athlete,
- 46:27you know,
- 46:28she wanted to be on the podium
- 46:29once she realized she could
- 46:30be on the podium and she
- 46:30had been in the driver's
- 46:31seat all weekend.
- 46:32So it's, it was like this weird,
- 46:33bittersweet thing of dang,
- 46:36that kind of sucks.
- 46:36Cause we were, we were right there to that,
- 46:39but also let's enjoy this
- 46:41moment of doing what we came here to do.
- 46:46And knowing that you can do
- 46:47this and you can compete
- 46:49with the best and punch a games ticket.
- 46:51So for me,
- 46:52at that point with her as a coach,
- 46:55I didn't want her
- 46:56ruminating on that moment.
- 47:00We have time to fix things.
- 47:01We have time to work on
- 47:03heavy lunging under various conditions.
- 47:05fatigues and loads and
- 47:08whatever like that's the
- 47:09x's and o's I wanted her to
- 47:11enjoy the punching of the
- 47:14game's ticket still and
- 47:16finishing fourth having a
- 47:17game spot clinched before
- 47:19the last event in a stacked
- 47:21field of women like she did
- 47:23an amazing job all weekend
- 47:26and so that's what I wanted
- 47:27her to kind of feel and
- 47:28have in that moment um
- 47:31rather than beating herself
- 47:33up over that event right
- 47:36So how much cooler is it
- 47:40that she punches her ticket
- 47:43and it wasn't eighth or
- 47:47seventh just over the line?
- 47:49Yeah.
- 47:50She was competing with two
- 47:55of the top five women in
- 47:56the world and Abigail Domet
- 48:01and Emily Rolfe.
- 48:03Yeah.
- 48:06I knew she could, you know, nobody,
- 48:10this year has been really
- 48:11fun with Hattie.
- 48:12Like I only coached her clear.
- 48:14She took fourth, but she tied.
- 48:17Right.
- 48:20I only coached Hattie for a
- 48:22brief time last year prior to semifinals,
- 48:24you know?
- 48:26And so this year has been a
- 48:27lot of me learning her and, and,
- 48:33um, getting to know what she needs more.
- 48:37And I don't know,
- 48:39it's just really fulfilling
- 48:40to see her achieve that
- 48:44goal that I think sometimes
- 48:46a lot of people want the goal, but don't,
- 48:49you know, it's,
- 48:50it's risky emotionally to
- 48:53say that you can do
- 48:54something like that because
- 48:54it is so hard.
- 48:56Um, so I'm just super proud of her for,
- 49:00um,
- 49:01putting in the work and
- 49:02doing those things.
- 49:02And as a coach, I,
- 49:06I greatly appreciate the
- 49:08trust to be the person that
- 49:12she trusts to guide her to that goal.
- 49:15Um,
- 49:17I couldn't be more proud of
- 49:18her for the job she did.
- 49:21Are you Coach Krispy Kreme?
- 49:23Jody Lynn asks,
- 49:23are Coach Krispy Kreme and
- 49:26Hattie just regular
- 49:27individual coach and athlete,
- 49:28or are they from one of the camps?
- 49:31I think technically you're a camp.
- 49:33Technically.
- 49:34You're a newer camp.
- 49:35Yeah.
- 49:37And for people who don't know, Tristan,
- 49:40so his real name is Tristan Patrick.
- 49:42We just call him Coach
- 49:43Krispy Kreme on this show.
- 49:44So dubbed by Kenneth DeLapp.
- 49:48Well done, Kenneth.
- 49:49And he coached Kelly Baker
- 49:53last year to the games.
- 49:57And with that, he was coaching Hattie,
- 49:59Madison, McElhaney.
- 50:03Jacob, Savannah.
- 50:05Yeah, a ton.
- 50:06And you're still coaching a
- 50:08lot of athletes, but you're a newer camp.
- 50:11You're a newer coach to the scene.
- 50:14So what I think is cool is
- 50:18Kelly and Hattie and
- 50:19Madison and Jacob putting
- 50:22all their trust in you as a
- 50:23new coach shows how good you are.
- 50:29I like to think I know some stuff.
- 50:31You don't have the resume of
- 50:32Justin Cutler or Maxwell
- 50:34Hodge or Ben Bergeron or, you know.
- 50:39Yeah.
- 50:41But a lot of people,
- 50:42a lot of people put their
- 50:44trust in you and you have
- 50:46proven that you are up to
- 50:48the task by far.
- 50:51I appreciate it.
- 50:51I put a lot of time and
- 50:57mental effort into it.
- 51:00Probably an unhealthy amount,
- 51:03but I don't have as many
- 51:05years of experience to be
- 51:07comfortable maybe,
- 51:08or as easily comfortable
- 51:09with what I put on a piece
- 51:10of paper as some of the other coaches.
- 51:13So Jody,
- 51:14he is the head coach at ascend
- 51:17that the shirt he has on right now,
- 51:21send athlete.
- 51:23Um, and they're in Houston area,
- 51:25the Houston area.
- 51:29But Hattie lives in... And
- 51:31one thing that they learned,
- 51:32and I want to have Hattie
- 51:33on with you at some point
- 51:34to talk about what you guys
- 51:36learned last year and the
- 51:38big changes you made this
- 51:39year that changed her whole
- 51:42world in this journey.
- 51:47But I think that's way too
- 51:48long for this show.
- 51:54And that's what I respect
- 51:56about you most is you tried one thing,
- 51:59You went back to the drawing
- 52:00board after talking to your athlete,
- 52:02and this year you did a
- 52:03completely different thing.
- 52:05Yeah.
- 52:07And so I think that's what's really cool.
- 52:10So let's finish up Jacob,
- 52:14and then we'll talk about the event.
- 52:15Oh, yeah.
- 52:16Jacob.
- 52:17So Jacob finishes the last event in 13th?
- 52:22I think so.
- 52:29place maybe 12th 12th so he
- 52:33he has a good finish with a
- 52:34fourth place and a 12th
- 52:36finish yeah now looking at
- 52:39him for the the offseason
- 52:42is it all running is it all
- 52:44burpees is it the Madison
- 52:45McElhaney approach with Jacob
- 52:48It's a refined version of it.
- 52:50I've learned some things
- 52:51since even Madison's off
- 52:52season that I want to
- 52:54incorporate with Jacob.
- 52:56And I mean, a lot of my athletes,
- 52:58but especially the,
- 53:00those power-based athletes, um,
- 53:03for their off seasons,
- 53:05but I'm really excited for
- 53:08Jacob's off season.
- 53:09There's going to be a lot of
- 53:10running for sure.
- 53:11There's going to be a lot of, you know,
- 53:14some pulling work and things like that.
- 53:17Um,
- 53:20You and I had texted a
- 53:21little bit about this,
- 53:22and I'm really excited for
- 53:24Jacob's offseason and his next year.
- 53:29We've cleared quarterfinals now.
- 53:33Pending,
- 53:33they don't change how many people go.
- 53:37He no longer needs to be
- 53:38concerned with qualifying
- 53:39through quarterfinals very much.
- 53:41We just need to make sure
- 53:42we're polished enough.
- 53:44at that point and then we'll
- 53:45know you know if
- 53:47semi-finals is very close
- 53:48to quarterfinals then we'll
- 53:49be very polished but if
- 53:51there is you know eight
- 53:52weeks or something then
- 53:53we'll still be kind of
- 53:54building and making sure
- 53:57that his sword is getting
- 53:58sharper but um there's a
- 54:02lot of not a lot of things
- 54:04that we need to improve on
- 54:06I mean I want him to
- 54:06improve on everything of
- 54:08course but there's
- 54:11some things that we can do
- 54:12outside of the gym as well
- 54:14to really set him up for
- 54:15success next year.
- 54:17And I'm very excited for
- 54:22what we can bring to
- 54:23semifinals next year with Jacob.
- 54:25If,
- 54:30if people know enough about the sport
- 54:32and they can see what he can do,
- 54:34and then they see where his holes are,
- 54:37when those get filled,
- 54:38that's going to be a problem.
- 54:41Very cool.
- 54:43So now we have a couple
- 54:45months till the games.
- 54:47Yeah.
- 54:48Like two and a half ish too.
- 54:50Well, I guess now just two.
- 54:52So what, what's up now?
- 54:56How many weeks does Hattie have off?
- 54:59She took the rest of the week off.
- 55:01Um,
- 55:01I think she's actually flying back home
- 55:02today.
- 55:03Um,
- 55:05She doesn't have anything
- 55:06for the rest of the week.
- 55:09If I know Hattie,
- 55:10she'll probably do the
- 55:11community class at her gym on Saturday,
- 55:14which is fine.
- 55:16And we'll start breaking off
- 55:18the rust and things on Saturday.
- 55:24next week and she and I'll
- 55:26jump on a call Monday to
- 55:29debrief semifinals things
- 55:31we did well things we want
- 55:32to improve on things that
- 55:34she liked things she didn't
- 55:36and then start really
- 55:38putting together some more
- 55:40of the nuts and bolts of
- 55:41the plan for games prep
- 55:44hopefully some trips out to
- 55:45Houston for training things
- 55:48like that we got to get her
- 55:49ready for the heat for sure
- 55:50and all that stuff
- 55:53So when she comes to Houston,
- 55:54do you try to find some
- 55:56athletes to push her during testing?
- 56:00We didn't for semifinals because...
- 56:06I mean, I just didn't need it.
- 56:08I could just get what I
- 56:09needed and write it on a piece of paper,
- 56:10right?
- 56:11For games prep, yes, 100%.
- 56:13I will be volunteering
- 56:16sacrificial lambs to do
- 56:19workouts with her.
- 56:20And it's really not that hard,
- 56:21and it usually is very fun for everybody.
- 56:23It's, you know, okay,
- 56:25Hattie's doing this weight,
- 56:26you're doing this weight,
- 56:27and maybe this reps, try to beat her.
- 56:30It's good for everybody.
- 56:32And it's a lot of fun.
- 56:34We have a decent number of
- 56:36Ascend athletes that are in-house.
- 56:38Some fit people who just go
- 56:39to the gym as well who like
- 56:41to jump in on stuff.
- 56:43I'm sure I'll make Jacob
- 56:44come up here if there's
- 56:44anything long she's doing.
- 56:48He can volunteer for that too.
- 56:50But yeah, it'll be a lot of fun.
- 56:56Sorry.
- 56:59We'll be rooting, of course, as always.
- 57:02we'll do these every week,
- 57:03every couple of weeks,
- 57:05checking in on everything and,
- 57:07and all the stuff going on
- 57:08in the CrossFit space.
- 57:10I'm super stoked to see you, man.
- 57:13Thank you, man.
- 57:14I appreciate it.
- 57:15Probably see you Friday.
- 57:17Yeah.
- 57:18Yeah.
- 57:18I get in Thursday.
- 57:20Yeah.
- 57:20I'll see you Friday.
- 57:22Got to go lock it up for the team now.
- 57:26Yeah.
- 57:27Good times.
- 57:28And not now Knoxville over the weekend.
- 57:30I've never been.
- 57:33It's all right.
- 57:35All right.
- 57:37Fair enough.
- 57:38Been there a couple times.
- 57:40Listen,
- 57:41I've said it on this show a million
- 57:42times.
- 57:43I love going to semifinals
- 57:44more than I love going to the games.
- 57:46Yeah.
- 57:47The story's better.
- 57:47The tension's better.
- 57:49The access to the athletes is better.
- 57:51Yeah.
- 57:54Everything about semifinals
- 57:55is so much more fun than the games.
- 57:58The game is on lockdown.
- 58:00It's a show.
- 58:00It's on ESPN.
- 58:03Everything is like tick, tick, tick.
- 58:06Semifinals are freaking wild.
- 58:08I can't say that I love the
- 58:09tension of semifinals as much as you do,
- 58:12but I appreciate that
- 58:13you... If you were a spectator,
- 58:15isn't that why you watch sports?
- 58:17Oh, yeah, totally.
- 58:19Right?
- 58:20I still battle hard with...
- 58:25I'm fine until I go sit down
- 58:27when they're going on the field.
- 58:29And then I immediately want
- 58:31to throw up immediately.
- 58:34It doesn't matter who I coach.
- 58:35It doesn't matter if it's, you know,
- 58:37like an intermediate level
- 58:39athlete that I'm working with at TFX.
- 58:41When they go on the floor,
- 58:42I get sick to my stomach.
- 58:45Dude.
- 58:46All I do is interview these
- 58:47people and talk to them and
- 58:49sometimes become their friends.
- 58:51I get emotional on the final day.
- 58:54Like the,
- 58:55when I know people are just damn
- 58:57good people, I want them to succeed.
- 59:00And like when they, when they miss it,
- 59:03I get, I get emotional.
- 59:06Yeah.
- 59:07He had a bad first day and I
- 59:09talked to her in the hallway.
- 59:10Like I was crushed for her.
- 59:14I've, I mean,
- 59:14now that I've been doing this
- 59:16a little while,
- 59:17I've started to develop
- 59:18friendships with other
- 59:19coaches and meet some of
- 59:20their athletes and, you know,
- 59:22friends of friends that I coach.
- 59:23And it's tough when people
- 59:26you like don't do well, like it sucks.
- 59:31It does.
- 59:32But that's why,
- 59:33that's why we love the sport.
- 59:34That's why people watch it.
- 59:36And hopefully we find a way
- 59:38to make this thing work better.
- 59:43What is the saying?
- 59:44The only way forward is through.
- 59:48And where we're at after the
- 59:49attendance in California, only way is up.
- 59:54Yeah, that's true.
- 59:58Stands were thin.
- 59:59Granted, obviously I could have cared less,
- 1:00:01but the stands were thin.
- 1:00:04But if people don't come,
- 1:00:06we don't have a sport.
- 1:00:07Yeah, totally.
- 1:00:08Right?
- 1:00:10So, yeah.
- 1:00:13Corey says the obstacle is the way.
- 1:00:15Corey,
- 1:00:16don't be dropping some stoicism in here.
- 1:00:17I'll have to start sending
- 1:00:18you stuff on Instagram.
- 1:00:23I wish Corey was going to.
- 1:00:24He says he wishes he was going.
- 1:00:25That'd be cool.
- 1:00:26The guy's a freaking blast
- 1:00:28to hang out with.
- 1:00:29I listened to like half of
- 1:00:30y'all's podcast the other day.
- 1:00:31It was funny.
- 1:00:32He's a good dude.
- 1:00:34So good.
- 1:00:36Yep.
- 1:00:36Yeah,
- 1:00:37we had a blast at Masters Fitness
- 1:00:38Collective last year.
- 1:00:41But yeah,
- 1:00:41you should have heard the after show.
- 1:00:43The after show I think was
- 1:00:44funnier than the actual show.
- 1:00:46We should have left the tape rolling.
- 1:00:49Just let it go, man.
- 1:00:50Just let it go.
- 1:00:52Yeah.
- 1:00:54So with that,
- 1:00:56thank you everybody for being
- 1:00:57in the chat.
- 1:00:58You guys have been awesome.
- 1:01:00Thank you, Tristan, for being on.
- 1:01:02And we'll do this again in a week or two.
- 1:01:05Yeah.
- 1:01:06Talk about how syndicate goes.
- 1:01:08Yep.
- 1:01:09With that,
- 1:01:09we will catch everybody next
- 1:01:11time on chopping it up with
- 1:01:14coach Krispy Kreme.
- 1:01:16Bye guys.
