Transcript
- 0:00Sriro Binda's use of the terms soul and psychic started out
- 0:06with the common usage of the time, but as his work developed,
- 0:10he determined it was best to create a more precise
- 0:13terminology than was commonly in use.
- 0:17In order to appreciate the nuances involved and follow
- 0:21along with the central sense being communicated.
- 0:24We take a moment to focus on these terms, which will appear
- 0:28constantly in our review of the current text as cited in the
- 0:34publisher's preface. Quote The reason why Sri Robindo
- 0:39adopted the term psychic being has been stated by him as
- 0:42follows. Quote The word soul is very
- 0:46vaguely used in English as it often refers to the whole non
- 0:51physical consciousness including even the vital with all its
- 0:54desires and passions. That is why the word psychic
- 0:58being has to be used so as to distinguish this divine portion
- 1:03from the instrumental parts of the nature.
- 1:06End Quote The word psychic too, as Sri Aurobindo points out, has
- 1:12been used in a confused manner. Therefore, the first section of
- 1:17the compilation contains extracts which deal with the
- 1:20various meanings of the word soul and psychic and clarify
- 1:24their connotations in Trioro Bindo's Yoga.
- 1:28To avoid confusion to those who might read some of Srioro
- 1:31Bindo's earlier writings, particularly the unrevised parts
- 1:36of the synthesis of Yoga, it may be pointed out that Trioro Bindo
- 1:41had at first used the terms psychic and psychical
- 1:45interchangeably in referring to the occult phenomena.
- 1:49He also used the term psychic in such expressions as psychic
- 1:53prana as distinguished from physical prana and psychic soul
- 1:59as distinguished from the desire soul, to distinguish what is
- 2:04deeper or below the surface from that which is more on the
- 2:08surface. However, in the revised parts of
- 2:12the earlier writings and in later writings, he always used
- 2:16the term psychic to refer to the soul or inmost part of the
- 2:21being, which from the very beginning he called the psyche.
- 2:26One of the most important points to be grasped clearly is the
- 2:30vital distinction between the soul in its essence, referred to
- 2:35variously by Sri or Ovindo as the psyche, psychic essence,
- 2:41psychic entity, psychic existence, soul spark or soul
- 2:45element and the soul in its evolved individualized form
- 2:51called the psychic being, psychic personality, soul form
- 2:57or soul personality, which in Tree Robindo's words is the
- 3:02spark growing into a fire evolving with the growth of
- 3:05consciousness. It should also be pointed out
- 3:09that the terms soul and the psychic, when used without an
- 3:13epithet, sometimes refer to the soul spark or psychic essence
- 3:19and sometimes to the soul personality or psychic being.
