- 0:00Denise Killian: Welcome to the GrowthPro.
- 0:02We're here to help scale your business, build stronger teams,
- 0:06and sharpen your leadership skills.
- 0:10Hello, friends.
- 0:11This is Denise Killian with the GrowthPro.
- 0:15Very excited to share with you what we're gonna be doing today with the A
- 0:18A MA. We're gonna be spending the day.
- 0:21In Congress, so I'll be excited to walk you through what happens today.
- 0:26It's a beautiful day.
- 0:28Let's see how we look by the end of it.
- 0:30For those that may not be familiar, AAMA represents the amusement and
- 0:33coin op entertainment industry.
- 0:36That includes arcades, bowling centers, family entertainment centers,
- 0:40manufacturers, distributors, and operators all across the country.
- 0:44Essentially, if you've ever played an archaic game, a redemption game,
- 0:48or visited a family entertainment center, you've experienced the
- 0:51industry AAMA works to support.
- 0:55What many people don't realize is that decisions made in Washington
- 0:58directly impact how our businesses operate every single day.
- 1:04Regulations, taxes, tariffs, payment processing, healthcare costs, these
- 1:09are all shaped by legislation and if business owners don't speak up.
- 1:14Lawmakers are often making those decisions without understanding
- 1:17the realities on the ground.
- 1:19That's why advocacy matters.
- 1:22During our meetings with congressional offices, we focused on several key
- 1:26issues that directly affect FECs and small businesses across the country.
- 1:32The first topic we discussed was the need to pass Senate Bill 5 0 4.
- 1:36This legislation addresses lending requirements for certain
- 1:39types of business facilities, including single use properties.
- 1:43Now many lenders require an additional 5% down payment for facilities
- 1:47considered single use for FECs.
- 1:50That classification can create a major financial hurdle.
- 1:54Think about what that means for a business owner trying to
- 1:56expand or open a new location.
- 1:59That additional 5% can easily translate into hundreds of thousands of dollars
- 2:04tied up in a down payment rather than being invested into the business itself.
- 2:09Things like new attractions, updated gains, facility improvements are hiring
- 2:14more employees for most businesses today.
- 2:16Credit cards are simply a cost of doing business, an expensive one.
- 2:21On average credit card transactions make up around 90% of all payments.
- 2:27That means nearly every guest or customer is paying with a card.
- 2:33When those transactions carrying processing fees of around 3%,
- 2:37the impact adds up quickly.
- 2:39For a business doing several million dollars in revenue annually, that can
- 2:43mean tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees each year.
- 2:50Those are dollars that could otherwise be used to invest back
- 2:52into the guest experience, maintain equipment, improve facilities,
- 2:58or increase wages for employees.
- 3:01There's an ongoing discussion in Congress about legislation that
- 3:04would introduce more competitive and transparent activities into
- 3:08the credit card processing system.
- 3:11The goal is to reduce excessive fees that disproportionately
- 3:14impact small businesses.
- 3:18We also discussed intellectual property protection, which is critical issue for
- 3:23manufacturers in the amusement industry.
- 3:26One example is Raw thrills, a company that designs and manufactures some of the most
- 3:30innovative archaic games in the world.
- 3:32These games require years of development, engineering, design,
- 3:35and significant financial investment.
- 3:38Unfortunately, there are foreign companies that copy these games, reproduce them
- 3:42without permission, essentially stealing the intellectual property and selling
- 3:47knockoff versions and other markets.
- 3:50When it happens, it undermines the companies that invested in
- 3:52creating the original products and it discourages innovation and
- 3:57makes it harder for legitimate manufacturers to continue developing
- 4:00new experiences for our industry.
- 4:05Another major topic we brought up was Hope Course Terrance.
- 4:09Many family entertainment centers rely on equipment and components
- 4:12that are manufactured overseas.
- 4:15Tariffs on these products can significantly increase costs for
- 4:18operators and manufacturers alike.
- 4:21But beyond the tariffs themselves, one of the biggest challenges right now is
- 4:24the unpredictability surrounding them.
- 4:27When tariff policies shift frequently or change from
- 4:30day-to-day, it becomes extremely difficult for businesses to plan.
- 4:35Operators must be budgeting for new equipment planning expansions, or pricing
- 4:38attractions based on set of costs only to have those numbers change unexpectedly.
- 4:44Business owners need stability and predictability in order to
- 4:47make sound financial decisions.
- 4:49When policies are constantly shifting, it creates uncertainty
- 4:53that can slow investment and growth.
- 4:56And finally, we talked about healthcare costs.
- 4:59Providing healthcare benefits to employees is something many
- 5:02business owners want to do.
- 5:04It's important for attracting and retaining great team members
- 5:07in supporting the people who help our businesses succeed.
- 5:11However, the cost of healthcare continues to rise year after year,
- 5:14making it increasingly difficult for small businesses to offer comprehensive
- 5:18coverage for FECs, many of which employ dozens or even hundreds of people.
- 5:24Those rising costs can become a significant financial burden.
- 5:29Finding a way to make healthcare more affordable for both employers and
- 5:32employees is an issue that affects nearly every small business across the country.
- 5:38So the day is incredibly long.
- 5:41You have about 15 minutes between each meeting, uh, to
- 5:46go and speak to your congress.
- 5:49Speak to your senator about the issues that are important to your business.
- 5:53It is something that, uh, remarkably anyone can do, uh, which is great, but
- 5:59you definitely want to be working with an organization to help you coordinate this.
- 6:04Now, as a private citizen, you can write your congressman, call your congressman's
- 6:08office, and they will, uh, allow you to come in and you can meet with a staffer.
- 6:13When you are a part of an organization that has a lobbyist group like the A A
- 6:17MA, you are able to meet with perhaps the chief of staff of that team, uh,
- 6:24or even the congress person themselves.
- 6:27So today we have spent our day talking about things that are
- 6:31important to our industry, but things that are important to all of us.
- 6:36Affordability concerns the amount of the cost of goods.
- 6:40You know, quite frankly, the things that.
- 6:42Impact us as individuals in our lives are the same things that
- 6:47impact us as small business owners.
- 6:50So having a lot of conversations about tariffs, about the cost of healthcare,
- 6:56about the price increases that are implicitly because of tariffs and other
- 7:03activities over the past two years that have been led to a lot of economic.
- 7:07Concerns and insecurities, both for consumers and for small businesses.
- 7:13So having the opportunity to be able to do that is something
- 7:17that is really, really amazing.
- 7:20Uh, but I do have to stress, it's not something that you have to belong
- 7:24to an organization to be able to do.
- 7:27You know, Congress people at the end of the day, they want to
- 7:30know what's happening in their communities, in their districts.
- 7:33They want real stories.
- 7:36And being able to meet with people in person and on people's staff to
- 7:41be able to have those conversations is an essential part of what
- 7:46keeps our democracy functioning.
- 7:48Thanks for coming along for our visit to Washington DC with the A A MA.
