- 0:08the California Angels faced the Detroit Tigers
- 0:11in a Tuesday night game under the lights at Tiger
- 0:13Stadium. The Angels were managed by Norm Sherry,
- 0:16who had taken over from Dick Williams midway
- 0:18through the 1976 season. The Tigers were managed
- 0:21by Ralph Houck, who had been struggling for three
- 0:23years to get the team above .500 after the departure
- 0:26of Billy Martin and their appearance in the ALCS
- 0:28in 1972. In this game, the Angels sent 30 -year
- 0:31-old Nolan Ryan to the mound to face the Tigers'
- 0:33John Hiller, one of the game's earliest closers,
- 0:36making a rare starting appearance. This audio
- 0:38recording is from the Detroit Radio Broadcast
- 0:40featuring announcers Ernie Harwell, Paul Carey,
- 0:43and Ray Lane. John Hiller, who came out of the
- 0:47bullpen to get his first start last Wednesday
- 0:51at Texas, only the second start since 1972 for
- 0:55him. He's getting his second start of this season.
- 0:58Here tonight against the potent California Angels.
- 1:02Killer, winner once, and loser four times. All
- 1:05those decisions in relief this year. All right,
- 1:09check that. The last one was the defeated Texas.
- 1:12Ready to go. And here for the play -by -play,
- 1:13Ernie Harwell. Thank you, Paul. Here we go. And
- 1:15Torres deleted off Flores, and he takes the ball
- 1:18outside. Ball one. Gil Flores, right -handed
- 1:21batting outfielder. Wind up by Heller. He delivers.
- 1:24There's a ball attempt, and it's missed by Flores,
- 1:28and the count is even 1 -1. Flores batting .345
- 1:32in 14 games. Young man from Puerto Rico, 24 years
- 1:37old. That is the early career happened by injuries
- 1:40last year at Salt Lake most of the year. Takes
- 1:43the ball in too close. 2 -1 the count on Flores.
- 1:48F -L -O -R -E -S. Heller ready to work. Here's
- 1:54a sky again about the knees. The fastball. Larry
- 1:59Barnett getting a dispute from the leadoff man
- 2:01Flores about that call. Two -two the count on
- 2:04him. Flores had a shoulder separation last year.
- 2:09He batted .323, though, over the whole year at
- 2:11Salt Lake. Swings at a bounding ball to first
- 2:13base. Thompson knocks it down, picks it up. Touches
- 2:16first base ahead of the batter Flores, and there's
- 2:19one away. The very fine second baseman stepping
- 2:26in now. R .E .M .Y. is hitting 287. Young man
- 2:34from Massachusetts. He batted 263 last season.
- 2:40This is the first look the Tigers have had at
- 2:42the Angels. Didn't even see him in spring training
- 2:45because they trained on separate coasts. Here's
- 2:49the ball outside on Remy. Ball one. Keller delivers,
- 2:55and the left -hand batter takes an outside pitch
- 2:58again. 2 -0 the count on Jerry Remy. Jerry, another
- 3:04one, the age of 24. Mankowski in close on him.
- 3:09There's a strike call. Fastball across, 2 -1
- 3:12on Remy. One out, nobody on. The game has just
- 3:15started at Tigers Stadium. The lights are on.
- 3:17There's daylight left around here, however, and
- 3:18a good bit of it. Now Hiller winds and pitches.
- 3:21Remy swings. A pop -up. Hit into short left field.
- 3:23Going back for Reiser. The shot's out. Here's
- 3:26Kemp behind him. And the left fielder, Kemp,
- 3:27makes the catch. Either one's going to take on
- 3:31that one. Dave Chalk will be the batter now.
- 3:35Hitting .333. The third baseman in 36 games.
- 3:43Angels have won nine of their last 13 and moved
- 3:46up to fourth place. They were seven games under
- 3:49.500 when they started that move. And now they're
- 3:52.200. Here's the motion and the pitch. It's a
- 3:55ball high on chalk. University of Texas product.
- 4:02Right -handed batting infielder. He choked that
- 4:04bat just a little bit. The 1 -0 pitch. Swung
- 4:06on and hit high in the air. Into the infield.
- 4:09Beriser and Fuentes are there. Fuentes back of
- 4:12the mound. And he has it for the out. They go
- 4:15down 1, 2, 3 in the California first. And at
- 4:18the end of the half inning, the Angels nothing,
- 4:21the Tigers are coming to bat. Well, the two Tiger
- 4:27farm teams that played last night both had to
- 4:31go into overtime and both were winners in extra
- 4:33innings down on the Superdome in New Orleans.
- 4:36Evansville, for the second game in a row, got
- 4:38a game -winning home run from catcher Lance Parrish.
- 4:41Lance hit a solo homer to give the triplets a
- 4:4310 -inning, 9 -8 victory over New Orleans. But
- 4:47John Valley has kept them in the ballgame with
- 4:49a pair of home runs and five RBIs. Evansville
- 4:52is now 21 -16 on the year, and they're in second
- 4:57place in the Eastern Division of the American
- 4:58Association. Montgomery was rained out of their
- 5:01ballgame at Jacksonville. The Rebels are 26 -15,
- 5:04and they rest in first place in their Western
- 5:07Division of the Southern League. Down in the
- 5:09Florida State League, Lakeland went 16 innings
- 5:11before defeating Coco 5 -2. Lakeland is in first
- 5:16place in the Northern Division with a 23 -17
- 5:19record in the Florida State League. who throws
- 5:34the baseball harder than anybody in the major
- 5:36leagues getting rid of the pitch and out of the
- 5:38Tigers in their first inning. The game is scoreless.
- 5:41He has a 9 -4 lifetime mark against the Tigers.
- 5:43He was 6 -4 against the entire league last year.
- 5:46He won two and lost none against the Tigers last
- 5:49season. First man to face him will be Phil Mancowski,
- 5:53a left -handed batting third baseman. Still keeping
- 5:56that average up there. He's batting .321 with
- 5:58one home run and 10 RBI. Like to send Tiger get
- 6:03well, which is to Janine Hand. The Saratoga Hospital,
- 6:08she's up and at them real soon. No score first
- 6:14inning. Nolan Ryan, young man from Texas, pitching
- 6:17to Phil Mankowski. And there's that fastball
- 6:21to tie it away, ball one. Terry Humphrey, the
- 6:23former Tiger, is doing the catching. Chalk at
- 6:26third, Griff at short, Remy at second, and Ron
- 6:29Jackson at first base. Orion wheels and delivers.
- 6:32There's a ball in close. That was a breaking
- 6:34pitch. In the outfield, they've got Rudy in left,
- 6:38Flores in center, and Boggs in right. Orion into
- 6:46action. Pitches. It is a ball high. 3 -0 on Mankowski.
- 7:03Kicks from the livers and a strike is called.
- 7:06Empty inside corner with that one. One of the
- 7:12great strikeout pitches in baseball history,
- 7:14Ryan. He holds the seasonal record, 383 strikeouts
- 7:19in one year. Here's a strike called. He got a
- 7:22fastball through, 3 -2. Some of the other great
- 7:31strikeout pitchers in baseball history, Rube
- 7:33Waddell, Bob Feller, Sandy Koufax. And he's beat
- 7:37them all. Here's the 3 -2 delivery. Swing, a
- 7:40line shot, base hit, center field. Fastball up
- 7:43in the letters, and Mankowski just gave it a
- 7:45little tap and hit it over the infield for a
- 7:47single. Good bat control he has, Paul. Yes, Phil.
- 7:53getting his first taste of Nolan Ryan pitching
- 7:55in this ballgame tonight. And he just simply
- 7:58swung it very easily, just met the ball, and
- 8:00Ryan provides so much momentum anyway. Here's
- 8:04Tito Fuente stepping in. He'd be batting left
- 8:07-handed now, hitting .311. This will be Tito's
- 8:1137th Tiger game. Man out first, nobody out. Tigers
- 8:14at bat first inning. The game's scored. The Tigers
- 8:16stadium in Detroit. And for what he's awaiting,
- 8:22this will be his first look at this pitcher.
- 8:25Except perhaps an exhibition contest. And he
- 8:31takes a strike. Let her high fastball inside
- 8:33corner. Ryan has fanned as many as 19 in one
- 8:39game. He did that in an 11 -inning game against
- 8:42Boston back in 74. There's a cut on the miss.
- 8:50One of the great games Dolan Ryan pitch was right
- 8:52here. You remember when he was pitching his second
- 8:55no hitter this season. And struck out a total
- 8:59of 17 Tigers. That was in 73. He has four no
- 9:06hitters in his career. There's a ball and close.
- 9:09One and two. He and Koufax share the record for
- 9:14that. One and two. The count on point is nobody
- 9:21down. A man at first base. Ryan sets and delivers.
- 9:24The swings and misses. Like it's breaking ball
- 9:29down around the ankles. And the way he's went
- 9:31for a bad pitch. One on, one out. And Rusty Saab
- 9:35will bat next. Rusty, the Tigers' designated
- 9:41batter. Hitting at a 242 clip. Last year, these
- 9:52two teams were six and six against each other.
- 9:58Tigers won four out of six here. The Angels won
- 10:00four out of six out of nine. It's a strike call.
- 10:03That leather high fastball blazing in from Nolan
- 10:06Ryan. Ryan delivers. It's a strike inside corner.
- 10:20That went in above the knees. Two strikes to
- 10:22count on him. Outfield is straight up on Rusty
- 10:29Staub. Last time out, Ryan beat the Twins 5 -3
- 10:34and struck out 12. He delivers a curve law 1
- 10:39-2. Struck out 12. Orion tried to wreck it for
- 10:53Sam McDowell. 74 games in which he has fanned
- 10:5710 or more. Here's the pitch. It's a ball and
- 11:02in close. Ooh, that was almost there. 2 -2, the
- 11:05count unstopped. He's got that wicked breaking
- 11:08ball to go with that fastball. Just an unbeatable
- 11:12combination. He pitched that no -hitter, too.
- 11:16He had a real good slow curve working for him
- 11:18that Sunday afternoon. Here's a 2 -2 pitch. Runner
- 11:20goes. Swing and a miss. Humphreys throw to second.
- 11:23He is eight at second base. It's a strikeout,
- 11:26and Mankowski has a stolen base. Two down, and
- 11:34now Kemp will be the batter. University of Southern
- 11:45California coming up now to face the Nolan Ryan.
- 11:50Black, we got three straight Californians hitting
- 11:52here against California. All left -hand batters,
- 11:56all youngsters, 22, 22, and 24 years old. Kemp,
- 12:01Compton, and Cochran. And all not very far from
- 12:04where the Angels are based. Same neighborhood.
- 12:09Two out, a man at second base. Kemp at the plate.
- 12:14He's hitting 300 now, right on the nose. Six
- 12:18home runs, 23 runs batted in for Steve. Curve
- 12:24over for a strike. Well, he started him off with
- 12:26a breaking pitch. And the Kemp took it all the
- 12:32way for a strike call. Now they set up Ryan.
- 12:39He turns and throws to second. Back in time is
- 12:42the runner Mankowski. Bobby Grich ducking behind
- 12:46him and taking a low throw to the right field
- 12:48side of the bag. Seems strange to see Grich at
- 12:53shortstop. Played it before, but I think he would
- 12:57probably prefer second base. Here's the pitch.
- 13:00It's a strike on the inside corner. That was
- 13:03Ryan's fastball. Well, the last few hitters,
- 13:06he's been getting ahead. He got behind on Mankowski
- 13:09and then got to a 3 -2 count. Mankowski's single.
- 13:12But on Poitiers and Staub, he worked on them
- 13:14pretty good with two quick strikes. Now he's
- 13:18got two strikes on Kemp. Let's see what it'll
- 13:20give him. It's been a curve and a fastball so
- 13:22far. Fastball very wide. He wasted that one.
- 13:25High and away on Steve. Only one year in the
- 13:33minors to Steve Kemp. And he's right up here
- 13:35hitting that big league pitching. And very near
- 13:43the plate. Wait till a one -two serve from Ryan.
- 13:45It's a breaking ball. Oh, gets by Humphrey. Mankowski
- 13:48will make it easy to third. That ball hit in
- 13:51the dirt right near the feet of Kemp in the batter's
- 13:54box. Humphrey blocked it a little bit to his
- 13:57right. It'll be a wild pitch. Peter Gallons of
- 14:06Sports Illustrated is here at Tigers Stadium
- 14:08tonight. He's come in to do a story on Mark Fittrich.
- 14:18Now two out. No score. First inning at Tiger
- 14:20Stadium. Thompson waiting on deck. Kemp the batter
- 14:22against Nolan Ryan. Here's a wide one now by
- 14:28the California right -handed. The pitch is a
- 14:29strike. God, he struck him out. Got a curve on
- 14:32the inside corner. And Kemp strikes out. So there's
- 14:35a single. A stolen base on the wild pitch. But
- 14:38three strikeouts along the way. No runs. One
- 14:40hit. No errors. And one man left on base at the
- 14:43end of one. California nothing. Detroit nothing.
- 14:48Hi, I'm Ernie Harwell, and I'm here with a couple

- 15:35thing. Yes, Katie? Shouldn't that be that person?
- 15:41Well, anyway, see your participating Greater
- 15:43Detroit Chrysler Plymouth dealer soon. It's difficult
- 15:49in this busy world to keep up with everything
- 15:51that transpires on a given day, but we at WJR
- 15:54News summarize your world for you, evenings at
- 15:566. This is Jennifer Moore. Join us. No score
- 16:06second ending. It'll be Joe Rudy to lead it off
- 16:08for the Angels, considered... As one of the outstanding
- 16:11all -around players in the American League. The
- 16:14former Oakland A, now the property of California.
- 16:20Thanks to the heavy shelling out of the old cowboy
- 16:22Gene Autry. Rudy has reached the ripe old baseball
- 16:27age of 30 and still moving along in great style.
- 16:31Batting .259 this season, he takes the strike
- 16:34on the outside corner. 38 RBIs for Rudy, an eight
- 16:39-home run. First play for the Kansas City A's
- 16:48and then move with them to Oakland finally. There's
- 16:50a swing and a miss on a dipping left -hand curve
- 16:53by others. Strike two on Joe Rudy. One of the
- 17:03several ballplayers has taken a weightlifting.
- 17:08To condition him. Here's a pitch. He swings and
- 17:10fouls it away. This one will be back toward the
- 17:13screen. And then right down below. Strike two
- 17:16on Joe. Seattle leads Cleveland 1 -0 at the end
- 17:19of one. Milwaukee and Baltimore, no score. They've
- 17:22completed two. Montreal beat the Cubs today,
- 17:265 -4 extra inning. Pittsburgh leading the Mets
- 17:29at the end of two. It's Pittsburgh, the 1 -0.
- 17:32No other scores yet. Hiller winds, delivers.
- 17:35Rudy swings, fly ball. Hit into short right center.
- 17:38Here comes Stanley. Won't get there. Drops in
- 17:40front of him. And Rudy has the first hit for
- 17:42the Angels. Little Texas League single dropping
- 17:45at the right center field. That'll bring up Bobby
- 17:48Bonds. Hitting 274. Eight home runs and 24 RBIs
- 17:53for Bobby. Got his start with the Giants and
- 17:56had a fine career there. They traded into the
- 18:00Yankees in 75. He stayed there one season and
- 18:03then went to California. Bobby, troubled by injuries
- 18:08last year, had a hand operation finally in August.
- 18:14Dullo hits with power and he has fine running
- 18:16speed. Bobby Bond, he swings and misses on the
- 18:19Hiller changeup. Bob Dabb is a professional boxer.
- 18:33Another looper hit the right field. May drop
- 18:35in. And here comes Cochran. Can't get it. Drops
- 18:38the ball after picking it up. He fires it back
- 18:41at the Puentes. He dropped it on one hop. And
- 18:43two singles very much alike. Rudy and Bonds have
- 18:47hit a couple little Texas leaguers. And here's
- 18:50Don Baylor, who's hit a lot more than Texas leaguers
- 18:53in this ballpark. You remember a few of those,
- 18:55don't you, Paul Carey? Oh, you bet. Has great
- 19:00power. He's not hitting all that well so far
- 19:02for the Angels. He's been a little disgruntled
- 19:04over the fact that he's been having to play the
- 19:06role of the D .H. But he's got that power and
- 19:09speed. Batting 2 -0 -3. Seven home runs for Baylor.
- 19:1319 runs better than former Baltimore Orioles.
- 19:17And he takes a strike call. Baltimore dealt him
- 19:22off to Oakland last year where he hit the 2 -47
- 19:25and had 15 homers. In field and double play depth.
- 19:30Miller in early trouble now. Two men on and nobody
- 19:33down. No score. Second inning. Set to kick the
- 19:36pitch. He swings and fouls it on the screen.
- 19:39Got that fastball in on the hand from John. Baylor
- 19:47got started early in baseball. He broke into
- 19:49the age of 18. He's still only 27. And he's been
- 19:52around since 67. Baltimore kept him in the minors
- 19:59quite a bit because of all the talent they had
- 20:01in outfield and at first base. Now to set the
- 20:04pitch, he starts the bunt and takes the ball
- 20:06outside. California broadcast team across the
- 20:14way. A couple of Michiganders beaming it out
- 20:17for California. Dick Enberg and Al Wisk. Don
- 20:21Drysdale taking a few days off. Here's the set
- 20:27-down by the Tiger left -hander Hiller. High
- 20:30foul fly. May go out of play. Thompson coming
- 20:33over near the seat. He has the room, but he overruns
- 20:36the ball. It was about three or four yards away
- 20:40from the barrier. Not real high, and Thompson
- 20:44ran under it, went to the fence, and then he
- 20:46couldn't go back and retreat. Oh, it falls in
- 20:50safely. A foul fly. One and two to count on Baylor.
- 21:03that he not only has power, but he has good running
- 21:06speed. Well, the outfield straight up on Don,
- 21:09and Hill has got to go to work on him again.
- 21:13John sets and delivers. There's a little pop
- 21:15ball over toward first base. Here's Thompson.
- 21:18He has it for the out. Check swing foul ball,
- 21:22and Thompson had a little trouble getting around
- 21:24the runner at first base, Bobby Bonds, but he
- 21:28made it over there in foul territory to make
- 21:30the catch. Now we'll see Ron Jackson come to
- 21:33bat the right -hand batting first baseman from
- 21:37Bessemer, Alabama Jackson hitting 250 in 21 games
- 21:43other big Huskies strong hitter This past is
- 21:48the 24th birthday about a week or two ago He's
- 21:52been up with the Californians a couple of times
- 21:54swings and misses on the other changeup Jackson
- 21:57last year and the year before was at both Salt
- 22:01Lake and at California. Finally made it last
- 22:07year as a regular with the Angels. Getting into
- 22:10127 games. They've had him at third base, the
- 22:14outfield, first base. He swings and misses. Breaking
- 22:19ball, and Hiller took a little off that one,
- 22:21too. A little bit of a breeze blowing out from
- 22:27the right field corner toward the left. Coming
- 22:31out of the south of the southeast. Miller checks
- 22:36his time with his catcher, Milt May. No score.
- 22:39Here's the fit. Watch out. In close. And he backed
- 22:43off and lost his helmet. Del Crandall is the
- 22:47first base coach. Dave Garcia coaches. The third
- 22:51day was at Cleveland, you remember, coaching.
- 22:55Crandall is the manager at Milwaukee. Here's
- 22:59the pitch. He takes the ball low. Good stop by
- 23:02May. He shot off one that hit in front of the
- 23:04plate. 2 -2. Crandall spent all last year at
- 23:09Salinas, I believe, in the California State League.
- 23:13Out there in his home territory. Well, Garcia
- 23:16from out that way, too. Now waiting on a 2 -2
- 23:24pitch is Jackson. He swings and fouls it away.
- 23:28Down the right field side it'll reach the seat.
- 23:32The story's out of Cleveland concerning the imminent
- 23:36dismissal rumored by Frank Robinson. Several
- 23:40admits mention the fact that Garcia was off of
- 23:45the job and turned it down. He didn't want to
- 23:47leave California or leave the coaching ring.
- 23:52Heller, check it, it's fine. It's a 2 -2 pitch
- 23:55again to Jackson. Ron Twinker, the bounding ball,
- 23:58hit off the middle, base hit, that'll get a run
- 24:00in probably. Rudy rounding third, coming home.
- 24:03Bonds takes third on the single, and California
- 24:05moves in front, 1 -0. That was a hard one -hopper
- 24:09to the glove side of Barraza. He couldn't get
- 24:11over towards second to stop it, and it got through
- 24:14for a single. Man on first, man on third, one
- 24:17run in, one man down, and Bobby Grits, the batter,
- 24:191 -0 California. Rich hitting 267. Five home
- 24:25runs and 17 RBI. The first well -hit ball of
- 24:31Miller tonight. Yep, the other two were just
- 24:34a couple of Texas leaguers that set the table
- 24:36for Ron Jackson. The Tigers will keep their infield
- 24:39and double play depth in this situation. 1 -0
- 24:41California. Rich with that short stroke of his
- 24:45at the plate. Takes the ball in two blows. Bobby,
- 24:51back in the state where he grew up, although
- 24:53he was born in Muskegon, Michigan. Thompson holding
- 24:59on the back with Jackson at first base. 1 -0
- 25:02Angels. Here's a ball outside from Hiller. 2
- 25:06-0 the count. Tells you a little bit about the
- 25:08power and speed of this Angel lineup when they've
- 25:11got a Gritch batting in the eighth position.
- 25:13Pretty indicative. Hiller ready. Here's a fly
- 25:21ball at the center. About medium depth. Stanley
- 25:24comes in a little bit. Makes the catch. Here's
- 25:26the tag at third. And Barnes is coming home to
- 25:29score. The ball gets by Fuentes. Jackson breaks
- 25:32the second. Throw to Verizon. Not in time. Two
- 25:36to nothing. California. And now they've got a
- 25:39man at second and two out. So Gritch will get
- 25:41a sacrifice. On the fly to Stanley. And then
- 25:45Stanley will be charged with an error. And the
- 25:48ball. Got away from the infield. And here is
- 25:55the former Tiger, Terry Humphrey, who's won himself
- 25:58a regular job out there in California. About
- 26:00a .227. He's been in 32 games. He's the catcher.
- 26:11Here's a strike called on Terry, the lean man
- 26:15from Oklahoma. Killer pitches and Humphrey looks
- 26:27at a ball low. Ron Jackson on second. Two out.
- 26:41California two tight. Nothing. Swing and a tip
- 26:44to the mid of May. Angels two runs and three
- 26:50hits coming in this inning. Here's the set by
- 26:59heller the left -hander kicks and deals There's
- 27:01a bounding ball to short verizer short hop tip
- 27:04the total top citizen time and the side retired
- 27:06However, the Californians pick up a couple two
- 27:10runs three hits one arrow one man left At the
- 27:13end of an inning and a half California to Detroit
- 27:16nothing Hazy, hot conditions will hold through
- 27:21the week as the WJR weather forecast from Mount
- 27:24Sillard to Detroit reads fair to partly cloudy
- 27:27with widely scattered afternoon and evening thundershowers
- 27:31through Thursday. Low temperatures tonight, 62
- 27:34to 65. Tomorrow's high and Thursday as well,
- 27:3786 to 89 degrees. Right now, winds are southerly
- 27:42at 7. Humidity is 53%. And under partly cloudy
- 27:46skies, it's 80 degrees at Detroit's Metro Airport.
- 27:49In town, 80 and mostly clear at Detroit City
- 27:53Airport. Pontiac reporting in with 77. It's 78
- 27:56and mostly clear in Ipsy. And Lansing has clear
- 27:59and 79 degrees. Repeating again at 8 .30, it's
- 28:04mostly... Clear and 80 degrees at Detroit Metro
- 28:07Airport. And MEP reporting no trouble at all
- 28:11on any freeway or Detroit area surface street.
- 28:14From Ty Cobb to Mark Fidrich, Radio 76 has been
- 28:18part of it all. It's sports information you've
- 28:20come to expect from WJR Detroit. Let's pause
- 28:28briefly for station identification. This is the
- 28:30Detroit Tiger Baseball Network. You're just three
- 28:32hours away from the captain, Jay Roberts, on
- 28:35Radio 76 at 11 .30 tonight on America's great
- 28:40radio station, WJR. Jason Thompson will lead
- 28:51it off against Nolan Ryan now, the flamethrower
- 28:54from California. Compton hitting .268. He has
- 28:5727 RBI as a team leader. And he also leads in
- 29:01home runs of seven. Ryan Reddy delivers. And
- 29:13Jason takes a high hard one. Very wide ball one.
- 29:26Here's a curve dipping down around the feet.
- 29:292 -0 the count on Jason. Tomorrow night is Irish
- 29:33-American night. They'll have some colorful pregame
- 29:35ceremonies beginning at 7 .30. The game itself
- 29:38gets underway at 8 o 'clock. It'll be Roberts
- 29:40against Tanana. We hope you'll be out for that
- 29:42one. Now the 2 -0 delivery. It's a ball very
- 29:46high. 3 -0 on Jason Thompson. Repeat the announcement
- 29:52we made a little bit earlier that Vern Rule has
- 29:54been placed on the 21 -day disabled list. He
- 29:56has a little stiffness in his right shoulder.
- 29:58Fidrich comes on the active list. There's a ball
- 30:02outside. He walked him on four pitches. Thompson,
- 30:08the second Tiger runner. The first one was Mankowski
- 30:11who let off the first inning with a single. And
- 30:13now Tim Cochran, another Californian, stepping
- 30:16up. Batting .467 at 7 for 15. One home run and
- 30:20four runs better than. Jim getting a nice hand
- 30:26from the home folks here and his first appearance
- 30:28against them. Not against them, in front of them.
- 30:39Ryan on the mound, pitching to Corcoran. Here's
- 30:42the pitch. He takes the ball outside and Humphrey
- 30:45wants a little comfort. Now they're going to
- 30:56pass out the all -star ballot here at Tigers
- 30:58Stadium. So you folks better cast your ballots.
- 31:01Five Tigers are on that computer. Punch card
- 31:04ballot this year. LaFleur may stop Thompson and
- 31:07Rodriguez. Now the conference over. Corcoran
- 31:12back in the batter's box. One and all to count
- 31:14on him. Ryan Sesson pitches. It's a strike call.
- 31:18Leather high fastball. Incidentally, had a little
- 31:21talk with Rodriguez before the ball game. Aurelio
- 31:23says he's working out now, taking batting practice,
- 31:26stealing practice, running, doing everything
- 31:28to get ready and get back in the lineup. Here's
- 31:32a 1 -1 delivery, and Tim swings and misses on
- 31:35the curve. Aurelio was out here early today getting
- 31:39a lot of work out of third base. They were hitting
- 31:42a lot of ground balls at him. Seemed to be treating
- 31:45the leg a little gingerly, perhaps. Well, it'll
- 31:49take a little time. One and two, the count on
- 31:52ten. Ryan to the set position. There's the fastball
- 31:57high and outside. Two -two, the count on Corcoran.
- 32:05We've got a report now from New York. Boston
- 32:07leads the Yankees two to one at the end of one
- 32:09at Yankee Stadium. There's a curve. It is a little
- 32:14bit high. Full count on Tim Corcoran. Bryant's
- 32:22going to that curve quite a bit here in the early
- 32:24inning. Tim sets himself in there. He stands
- 32:31very deep in the batter's box. Full count pitch.
- 32:34Swung on it high in the air to left field. Not
- 32:36deep at all. Rudy is under it. Waiting, waiting.
- 32:39And it's in his glove for the out. Thompson retreats
- 32:43to first base. Here's Milt May stepping up the
- 32:47Tigers' schedule with a 2 .62 average. Milt has
- 32:53three home runs. He's driven in 13 runs. After
- 32:56Dave Roberts and Tanana duel tomorrow night,
- 33:00there'll be an off day for the Tigers. On Friday,
- 33:02Mark Federich comes back to action. He'll be
- 33:05pitching against Glenn Abbott on Demolay night.
- 33:07The Tigers versus Seattle. Saturday, it'll be
- 33:11Rosemar against Paul. And Sunday, Arroyo against
- 33:14Undecided. Tiger Day Saturday, Autograph Day
- 33:19Sunday. May looks at a strike call from Nolan
- 33:23Ryan. Thompson, not much to believe at first
- 33:35base. Jackson holds with him. The fastball is
- 33:38in too close on Milton. May, one and one to count
- 33:40on Milton. California picked up two in the second.
- 33:48They laid the Tigers 2 -0, but the Tigers trying
- 33:50to get back in the second inning. May swings
- 33:53and misses. He took a big ripple. And the fastball
- 33:56came in right through the letters. Two of the
- 34:09hitters who led the hitting against California
- 34:10not in the lineup today for the Tigers. Here's
- 34:13a foul back on the screen. One and two on May.
- 34:17Those two are LaFleur and Rodriguez. Rusty Staub
- 34:24was another one of the leaders last year against
- 34:26California pitching only. Hope you'll be out
- 34:31here tomorrow night, fun at the ballpark. Here's
- 34:34the pitch. Swing and a foul. It'll reach the
- 34:36seat back a third. That's the trouble with having
- 34:42only a two -game series with the Angels and a
- 34:44day off for four. You figure your odds are you're
- 34:47going to get to Nana and Ryan. It's a four -game
- 34:50series, so you can spread it around a little
- 34:52bit. That's a potent one -two punch, too, to
- 34:54run up against. Now May digging in, waiting on
- 35:01another one -two serve from Nolan. Here it is.
- 35:03He takes the high fastball. That one seemed to
- 35:06sail a little bit for him. 2 -2 the count on
- 35:08May. Doesn't appear that Ryan has really found
- 35:11his rhythm yet in this game. He's struggling
- 35:14a little bit. He seems to be getting his curveball
- 35:16over better than the fast stuff. Now the 2 -2
- 35:20delivery. There's his curve. It missed the mark.
- 35:23He's thrown a lot of pitches here in the early
- 35:26part of the game. He had an arm operation in
- 35:29late 75. September 75. And 76 was not an outstanding
- 35:36year for Nolan, not by his standards. Outfield
- 35:46around the right on May. Almost no breeze right
- 35:49now. Here's a pitch. He takes a walk. He didn't
- 35:52get the curve in that time. And the Tigers have
- 35:55two runners both on bases on balls. Mickey Stanley,
- 36:01veteran center fielder, getting a nice round
- 36:04of applause. Nick batting 265. One of the most
- 36:10popular of the Tigers, Mickey Stanley. Thompson
- 36:21on second. May on first. Tigers trail by two.
- 36:24Two -nothing in the second inning. And the pitch.
- 36:37He takes the ball outside. That was a fastball.
- 36:40High and away. Good turnout in the bleaches tonight.
- 36:47You can come out and see a baseball game for
- 36:49a dollar and a half. That's hard to beat. Cup
- 36:53of coffee costs almost that much now. Here's
- 36:57the strike call. Fastball in above the knees.
- 37:05Got about a fourth of a shrimp cocktail for that.
- 37:122 -0. Angels lead the Tigers in the second inning.
- 37:16Stanley waits. The 1 -1 pitch is outside. Ryan
- 37:20going to that fastball a lot now. 2 -1 the count
- 37:24on Mickey. Tigers did some lusty hitting in Comiskey
- 37:34Park when they swept that series of Chicago.
- 37:38They'd like to continue that hitting pace. Stanley
- 37:42at the plate. 2 -1 pitch. Swing and a top. He
- 37:46just kicked that one off the net of Humphrey.
- 37:51And the count on Mickey, 2 -2. Outfield plays
- 38:04Stanley not to be able to get around on Ryan.
- 38:09Yeah, they've got Flores over there in right
- 38:11center. Let's see what he will give him on 2
- 38:15-2 now with one out and two on 2 -0. California
- 38:18leading in the second. Ryan takes his time. Mickey
- 38:20digging in waiting. Here it comes. He takes a
- 38:23strike, a fastball across. Hits that outside
- 38:26corner. That is a really tough pitch. Right -hander
- 38:30against the right -hander. He gets that fastball
- 38:32on the outside corner. Just a little bit above
- 38:35the knee. Not too much you can do. That's the
- 38:41fourth strikeout for Ryan. and he's retired five
- 38:45men and banned four of them. Here's Tommy Barraza
- 38:48with two on and two out. Tommy batting 160. This
- 38:53is his 25th game. Takes a wide one, ball one.
- 39:06Dick Krzyzewski coaching at first. Fred Hatfield,
- 39:09the third base coach for the Tigers. Barraza
- 39:13looked at a ball outside. Two at 0. Another fastball.
- 39:19Now Seattle and Cleveland are tied. They're 2
- 39:22-2 at the end of three. Baltimore second lead
- 39:24over Milwaukee at Baltimore. 1 -0. They've completed
- 39:27three over there. Now the 2 -0 pitch and Verizon
- 39:31takes the strike outside corner. Tiger fans trying
- 39:37to clap up a little rally here in the second
- 39:39inning with the Tigers trailing 2 -0. Now the
- 39:45set by Nolan Ryan. The right hander fires. It's
- 39:48a fastball. Swung on. Popped in the air to short
- 39:50left. Rudy is there. He's waiting. He has it
- 39:53and the side retires. The Tigers get two walks
- 39:55and that's all. No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 39:58Two are left. And it's the end of two. California
- 40:01two, Detroit nothing. We got together to do it
- 40:06better. And that's what we did. You know, when
- 40:16things go right, it really feels good. And that's
- 40:19the way it feels around the Marathon Oil Company.
- 40:21Because Marathon isn't just a name. It's a lot
- 40:24of people who got together because they think
- 40:26doing it better is the only way to do it. And
- 40:29if you ask me, I think they're absolutely right.
- 40:33We got together to do it better. That's what
- 40:38we did. We're Marathon. We got together to do
- 41:02it better, and we did. Jay Roberts here to remind
- 41:09you that I stay up late to provide a little night
- 41:12music and conversation on a program called Night
- 41:15Flight 76. Join me evenings at 11 .30 on WJR.
- 41:22Bill Flores, the lead off man, coming up now
- 41:24to start things in the third against John Hiller.
- 41:28California picked up a couple in the second.
- 41:30That's the difference in the game. They had singles
- 41:32by Rudy and Bond. Single by Jackson and a sacrifice
- 41:36fly by Gritch. Got the second run home. Heller
- 41:39delivers and Flores looks at a curve over. Strike
- 41:42one. He bounced that assist to Thompson the first
- 41:45time it's passed. Here's a pitch at law. One
- 41:52and one to count on him. in the dirt. The county's
- 42:02two and one. John Rock kicks the livers. Little
- 42:13pop fly back towards short. Verizon's there.
- 42:16He has it. And that's one away. Torres popping
- 42:21to Tommy Verizon. Jerry Remy will be the batter.
- 42:25John Sanderson is a great Tiger fan. Has been.
- 42:29And still is. Been in the hospital for a long,
- 42:32long time. Still rooting for the Tigers. We send
- 42:35our very best to him. He's at St. Joseph of Mount
- 42:37Clemens. There's the ball low. Ball one. Remy,
- 42:43a very fine competitor and highly regarded all
- 42:46around the league. He flied to left his first
- 42:48trip. Swings and misses on a Hiller curve one
- 42:51and one. other tomorrow night at 8 o 'clock.
- 43:11Hope you'll be out with us. Bounding ball to
- 43:13first. Thompson very wide of the bag. Has it
- 43:15raised to the bag. Won by Jason. Remy is out
- 43:18to Jason Thompson unassisted. Two up and two
- 43:21away. Dave Chalk. Dave popped to second base.
- 43:25His only trip. The right hand batter takes a
- 43:54strike on the outside corner to strike the comedy.
- 43:58California to Detroit nothing. The angels are
- 44:01batting in the third the first of a two game
- 44:03set. First look these two teams have had at each
- 44:06other this year. He takes a half cut but it's
- 44:10ruled the ball didn't go over. Piper net checking
- 44:14with Jim Evans at first he says you're right.
- 44:16He didn't go across. So I want to count on Dave
- 44:19Shaw. Here it is. Swing and a bounding foul.
- 44:22It's down past the coach, Dave Garcia. Dave managed
- 44:28in the Mexican ball. Same league that Rodriguez
- 44:33has often played in the wintertime. Here's a
- 44:36high pop -up over back of Mankowski. Verizer
- 44:40is in left field. Here comes Kemp behind him,
- 44:42and Verizer makes the catch for the out. They
- 44:45go down one, two, three, and the third. Here
- 44:48come the Tigers to bat in the last half. The
- 44:50third it is. California 2, Detroit nothing. When
- 45:16it comes to racing, motorcycle champions have
- 45:19one thing in common. Champions spark plugs. Last
- 45:22year, for instance, champions sparked all 16
- 45:25major U .S. and world motorcycle championships,
- 45:28including motocross and road racing. Is it any
- 45:31wonder when most factory teams go racing, champions
- 45:34spark plugs go along? So when your bike needs
- 45:37a new plug, do what racers around the world do.
- 45:39Fill her up with champions. Tigers coming about
- 46:05against Nolan Ryan. It is 2 -0 Angels. Two runs
- 46:10three hits for California. No runs, one hit for
- 46:12the Tigers. And here's the man who's had the
- 46:14only hit, Mankowski. He'll be leading off in
- 46:16the Tiger third against Ryan. Ryan has walked
- 46:19two. And he picked up four strikeouts in the
- 46:23first two innings. On the left -hand batting,
- 46:29Mankowski at a 3 -2 pitch for a single into center
- 46:32field. A first -time up bats again. Right -hander
- 46:35Nolan Ryan into action. But it is, and Phil takes
- 46:38a ball in close ball one. Still daylight here
- 46:42at Tigers Stadium. It is 8 .48 on the stadium
- 46:45clock. Ryan wheels and deals. There's a curve
- 46:51across above the knees. One and one. Hear the
- 47:00voice of Mark Fedrich from the far corner of
- 47:03the dugout over there at third base. Fastball
- 47:05onto the chin. Two and one. They got him. Mankowski.
- 47:14Chopkin close at third on Phil. 2 -0 California
- 47:17in the third. Low inside curve. 3 -1 from Nolan
- 47:23Ryan. Here's a ball outside. He walked in. That'll
- 47:37be the third walk off Ryan. Ryan really seemed
- 47:43to find himself back around 72. Tom Morgan got
- 47:46a hold of him when he was a pitching coach out
- 47:48of California. Worked him out between starts.
- 47:51Got him to take a little off his fastball once
- 47:53in a while. And it seemed to get Ryan in the
- 47:56correct groove. He's walked three. He struck
- 48:03out four and a lot of hit. Here's his first strikeout
- 48:06victim. Fluenti is coming up again. Batting left
- 48:09-handed. Tito takes the strike. Started the bunt.
- 48:12Hit the outside corner on him. Baltimore still
- 48:16leading Milwaukee there in the fifth inning now.
- 48:18Baltimore 1 -0 the Orioles ahead. Set by Ryan
- 48:24in the pitch. It's a ball outside. A one -and
- 48:28-one on Tito. Boston leading the Yankees there
- 48:36in the third. Two to one at New York. Minkowski
- 48:41getting a little bit of a lead at first. Ron
- 48:43Jackson holding on the bag with him. The one
- 48:46-one pitch coming up to Tito. Very high and wide.
- 48:50Two and one. Ryan throwing a lot of pitches here
- 49:00in the early inning. Here's a cut and a miss
- 49:11on a pitch that was in close around the knees.
- 49:142 -2 the count on Palletti. Tito saying something
- 49:25to Barnett and Humphries. He stepped back into
- 49:28the batter's box. 2 -2 the count on him. Waiting
- 49:35on deck rusty stop. Here's a bit. It's a ball
- 49:40outside. There's that book out again. That's
- 49:43been up on the board quite a bit already. Kowski
- 49:51edging off a little bit at first base. Jackson
- 49:53holding with him. 2 -0 California. Tito swings
- 49:58and fouls it on the screen. Just got a piece
- 50:00of that fastball. Ryan deals that fastball. Tito
- 50:06doesn't have time to slide that left hand down.
- 50:08Yeah. Got to just get the bat across the plate.
- 50:17Waiting on another 3 -2 delivery from Nolan Ryan.
- 50:20Here it is. He swings and fouls another one on
- 50:23the screen. He took a little off that one. That
- 50:25didn't have the zip that the last one had. Sixty
- 50:36feet, six inches from the plate. The ball comes
- 50:39up 95 to 100 plus miles per hour. You don't have
- 50:45much time. About two -fifths of a second to hit
- 50:47the ball. Here's a swing and a miss. He didn't
- 50:49hit that one. It's the fifth strikeout for Ryan.
- 50:55And Rusty Staub will be the batter. He struck
- 51:08out his first time at bat. They moved the pitching
- 51:12mound back from the plate in 1893. It used to
- 51:15be only 50 feet from the plate. New York had
- 51:18a great pitcher named Amos Rusi. And they figured
- 51:22he threw too hard. They'd move it back. There's
- 51:24a ball outside. Well, all it did made his curveball
- 51:31a little more effective. And he was even a better
- 51:34pitcher after they moved it back to 60 feet six
- 51:37inches. Paul won the count on Rusty Staub. Man
- 51:42on first. One man down. 2 -0 California. Ryan
- 51:47sets and pitches. There's a strike call. The
- 51:50fastball in. 1 -1 they count on him. Staub steps
- 52:02out as we told you. He was one of the leading
- 52:03Tiger hitters against California pitching last
- 52:06year. Minkowski not getting much of a lead at
- 52:09first base. Stob takes the ball outside. Two
- 52:14and one they count on him. Now Rusty choking
- 52:30the bat. Leaning and waiting is the 2 -1 there.
- 52:34He swings fly ball at the drop left field near
- 52:36the line. Rudy coming over to his right is there.
- 52:39He makes the catch and holding it first is Mankowski.
- 52:45All the outs have either been strikeouts or fly
- 52:48balls to Rudy in left field. Rudy's had three
- 52:52put outs and then five Tigers have gone down
- 52:56on strike. Here's Steve Kemp who took a call
- 53:01third strike to win the first inning. Man Humphrey's
- 53:04gone out of the mound to talk with Nolan Ryan
- 53:28by digging in the conference is over now on the
- 53:30right hand Orion sets and pitches a left hand
- 53:33about it takes a strike outside corner he didn't
- 53:36like that call by Barnett gave him a little bit
- 53:38of the old family look there Ron Jackson holding
- 53:44on the bag with Mankowski at first base here's
- 53:48the pitch it's a ball high one and one We've
- 53:57told you from time to time that Kemp is a very
- 54:00aggressive hitter. Anybody to keep you from being
- 54:03aggressive, it would be the pitcher of the type
- 54:06of Nolan Ryan. Here's the set and the pitch.
- 54:10He backed him off with an inside fastball. 2
- 54:15-1 the count on Steve. Jason Thompson waiting
- 54:20on deck. We're in the third inning. The Tigers
- 54:21and the California Angels. The Angels have the
- 54:24lead 2 -0 at Tiger Stadium. Man on first, two
- 54:28down for Detroit. A 2 -1 pitch to Kemp. He swings
- 54:32and fouls it away. He got a good ripple at that
- 54:34one. That was the let -up curve. But he beat
- 54:37the ball down on his foot. 2 -2 the count on
- 54:39Steve. I don't think I ever saw a more impressive
- 54:47pitching performance than when Ryan pitched his
- 54:49second no -hitter in that 73 season against the
- 54:53Tigers. He struck out 17. Probably would have
- 54:56fanned more, but he had a big rest in the eighth
- 54:58inning when California got a lot of runs. Here's
- 55:03a 2 -2 pitch now to Kemp. Swing and a miss. He
- 55:07struck him out. He tried to hold up, but he'd
- 55:09gone across. That is six strikeouts on Olin Ryan.
- 55:14No runs, no hits, no walks, no errors. One man
- 55:17left at the end of three. California 2, Detroit
- 55:19nothing. You're at the plate in the Labatt's
- 55:25baseball trivia game. Here's the pitch. Who drew
- 55:30the most votes in the first selection of players
- 55:33for the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York?
- 55:37Call Time Out to think about it over a cool,
- 55:40refreshing Labatt's Blue. The answer, Ty Cobb.
- 55:51Ty Cobb gained 222 votes, seven more than the
- 55:55great Babe Ruth or Honus Wagner. Great baseball
- 56:00calls for great beer, Labatt's Blue. Call for
- 56:04Labatt's, brewed in Canada since 1828. Distributed

- 56:19in the morning. to use the vernacular. That's
- 56:22what we do in the morning here on WJR. I'm doing
- 56:25my job. I'm J .P. McCarthy. Join me from 6 to
- 56:2810. California got two in the second off John
- 56:42Hiller. They lead Hiller and the Tigers now 2
- 56:44-0. We move to the fourth inning. Let's all enjoy
- 56:46hearing from Paul Carey. All right, Ernie, thank
- 56:49you very much. It's Joe Rudy to lead it off for
- 56:51the Angels here in the top of the fourth inning
- 56:53against Hiller. It was Rudy who started things
- 56:58going for the Angels in the second inning with
- 57:00his loop single to right field. Hiller looking
- 57:07in, getting the side from Milt May. Into the
- 57:09windup, the left -hander delivers. The curve
- 57:12stays high for ball one. Rudy backing out. Eight
- 57:24home runs, 38 RBIs this year for Joe. As you
- 57:27know, most of them behind Frank DiManna. There's
- 57:29a foul into the upper deck behind the plate.
- 57:33Ball and a strike on Rudy. One of the three long
- 57:41-term contract -rich new players possessed by
- 57:45the California club. Out of that. re -entry free
- 57:50agency draft. The pitch to him. Strike called.
- 57:53Joe had an idea and then decided to not go after
- 57:56it. Hiller with his second start of this season,
- 58:03his second straight start. Did not survive the
- 58:07fourth inning at Texas, his first outing last
- 58:10Wednesday. Here's the pitch to Rudy. It's high
- 58:12with a fastball. That'll even the count of two
- 58:15balls and two strikes. The Angels getting two
- 58:19runs in the second inning. A couple of loop singles
- 58:21by Rudy and Bonds, and then the one -off single
- 58:24hit very sharply beyond the reach of a riser
- 58:27into left center field by Ron Jackson. Sacrifice
- 58:30fly by Gritch Fowler. There's a swing and a miss.
- 58:33Rudy goes down swinging, and that's the first
- 58:35strikeout for Hiller. Let's pause for station
- 58:39identification. This is the Detroit Tiger Baseball
- 58:42Network. Here's the weather for greater Detroit.
- 58:44Cloudy, widely scattered afternoon and evening
- 58:46thundershowers through Thursday. Low tonight,
- 58:48mid -60s. High tomorrow and Thursday, upper 80s.
- 58:51At a minute past 9, it's partly cloudy and 80.
- 58:54This is WJR Detroit. A cutter to miss by Bobby
- 59:00Bonds on the first offering from Hiller. Now
- 59:03Bonds had looped his single to right field his
- 59:05first time up. Well, Hiller, with his first strikeout,
- 59:08getting Rudy to open the fourth inning. A little
- 59:12bit low that time, near the outside part of the
- 59:14plate, and it took patience on Bond's part not
- 59:16to go after it. One and one on Bobby. Hiller
- 59:21winds, delivers. Swung on and missed. He was
- 59:23over the top of that off -speed pitch. Ryan is
- 59:27spanning them at the rate of two per inning with
- 59:30a total of six. Nobody on, one down. Top of the
- 59:36fourth inning. A one -two pitch. He struck him
- 59:39out. Back -to -back strikeouts by Hiller. And
- 59:42Bonds going down swinging. John has pitched well
- 59:47here tonight. He got hurt by those two little
- 59:50soft fly balls that dropped in in the second
- 59:53inning by Rudy and Bonds. Only well -hit ball.
- 59:56One hopper into left center by Ron Jackson. So
- 1:00:01there are two down. Nobody on, and Don Baylor's
- 1:00:03at the plate. The pitch to Don. He checks. It's
- 1:00:06low and inside. The Oakland A's last year, previous
- 1:00:18to that with Baltimore, on the inside corner
- 1:00:20for a call strike. Miller has the sign. The 1
- 1:00:30-1 pitch. Taken inside. Ball two, strike one
- 1:00:35on Baylor. Power and speed owned by this man.
- 1:00:42The one who just struck out, Bobby Bond, is a
- 1:00:45good example of that. On the inside corner of
- 1:00:48her called strike. That's a pretty pitch. In
- 1:00:50around the knees. Now the line up by Hiller,
- 1:01:00the 2 -2 pitch. Line shot foul. That'll reach
- 1:01:04the facing of the upper deck and get into the
- 1:01:07first couple of rows in the upper deck and right
- 1:01:09field. Hope they were ready for that one out
- 1:01:13there. 2 -0. The Angels lead the Tigers here
- 1:01:18in the top of the fourth inning. Two down, nobody
- 1:01:20on. The 2 -2 pitch. There's a pop -up toward
- 1:01:23third. Mankowski calling for it, straddling the
- 1:01:26line. Now Verizer calls him off. He makes the
- 1:01:28catch in foul territory. And the Angels are retired
- 1:01:31in order here in the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:01:34Tigers come to bat in their half with a score,
- 1:01:36California 2, Detroit nothing. You may have been
- 1:01:52thinking that a car with the comfort and gloominess

- 1:02:40Plymouth dealer today. I'd like to take the opportunity
- 1:02:50right here before the Tigers bat on the bottom
- 1:02:52of the fourth inning to pass along my sincere
- 1:02:55happy anniversary wishes to my... Father -in
- 1:02:59-law and mother -in -law, Pete and Mary Westlock
- 1:03:01in Saginaw, Michigan, on the occasion of their
- 1:03:0356th wedding anniversary. Happy anniversary,
- 1:03:08Pete and Mary. Here's Jason Thompson to lead
- 1:03:10it off for the Tigers in the bottom of the fourth
- 1:03:12inning. Nolan Ryan has struck out six Tigers,
- 1:03:19but he's had a little problem getting his rhythm.
- 1:03:21At times, had problems with a... Breaking ball,
- 1:03:25others with a fastball getting it over, and he's
- 1:03:27walked three and uncorked one wild pitch. Tigers
- 1:03:29have had base runners, but haven't been able
- 1:03:31to move them around and on in. Thompson walked
- 1:03:34his first time up. There's a wild one almost,
- 1:03:37high and wide to Jason. Ryan shrugging his shoulders.
- 1:03:44Nolan has slowed his delivery. He feels it's
- 1:03:46helped him a bit. Now they wind up the pitch.
- 1:03:51Breaking ball gets in. A ball and a strike on
- 1:03:56Jason. On the windup. And the pitch. It's a ball
- 1:04:09outside. Two and one now on Thompson. Thompson
- 1:04:16had a big day Sunday against the White Sox with
- 1:04:18those five RBIs. The pitch to him. Swung on.
- 1:04:21Ripped up the middle of the center field. A base
- 1:04:23hit for Thompson. Met the fastball and just sent
- 1:04:27it out over second base. Hit number two for the
- 1:04:30Tigers. They trail 2 -0 here in the bottom of
- 1:04:33the fourth inning. That brings up Tim Corcoran.
- 1:04:40Tim is playing his first game ever in Tiger Stadium.
- 1:04:44Joined the Tigers on the trip at Texas. Called
- 1:04:47up after a sensational start for the Evansville
- 1:04:50Triplets where he played first base almost exclusively.
- 1:04:54He's been used as the D .H. in one game and then
- 1:04:57in right field for the Tigers. Slightly open
- 1:05:00stance. Feet spread wide apart. The pitch to
- 1:05:02him. It's a fastball outside for ball one. Him
- 1:05:07got off to a slow start in Texas. Picked up a
- 1:05:09hit in his first game in Chicago, and that was
- 1:05:12a long one, a home run for him. And he wound
- 1:05:14up with three for four and three for four. The
- 1:05:17pitch to Tim. Strike. Got that one across the
- 1:05:20letters near the outside of the plate. Thompson
- 1:05:23at first. with a leadoff single here in the Tiger
- 1:05:26fourth inning. 2 -0 Angels. Tim Ply to left.
- 1:05:33His first time up against Ryan. Leans back. The
- 1:05:36pitch is swung on. A little looper towards center
- 1:05:38field. It'll drop in for a base hit. Thompson
- 1:05:40holds at second base as Flores, with excellent
- 1:05:44speed, comes in to pick that ball up very quickly.
- 1:05:48Ball died in the outfield, but Thompson didn't
- 1:05:50have a chance to go to third. Runners at first
- 1:05:52and second with nobody out. The batter will be
- 1:05:55Milt May. May walked his first time up. So he
- 1:06:03got a conference at the mound. Ryan, along with
- 1:06:06Terry Humphrey, the catcher, and Chalk, the third
- 1:06:09baseman, in to talk. Tigers with back -to -back
- 1:06:13singles here in the fourth inning. The Angels
- 1:06:16have the same thing in the second and cashed
- 1:06:18in a couple of runs. Protecting the baseball.
- 1:06:24Larry Barnett keeping it in play. May hitting
- 1:06:313 -10. Three home runs, 13 RBIs for Milton. With
- 1:06:40Buentas batting left -handed, there's a string
- 1:06:42of six straight, seven straight Tiger batters
- 1:06:47left -handed against Ryan. There's a wild one,
- 1:06:49gets off the glove of Humphrey, and the runners
- 1:06:51will move up. That was a high fastball as Terry
- 1:06:56didn't quite get out of the crouch quickly enough
- 1:06:58to grab. It's being ruled a wild pitch, the second
- 1:07:03by Ryan. He uncorked one in the first inning,
- 1:07:07allowing Mankowski to get to third base, but
- 1:07:09that's where he died when Kemp struck out. Now
- 1:07:13there is nobody out. Thompson is at third. Corcoran
- 1:07:19at second. trouble with the ball game. Oh, he
- 1:07:29had some trouble in the second inning, too, and
- 1:07:31the Tigers got two on by way of walks. One ball,
- 1:07:36no strike count. The pitch to May. Swung out,
- 1:07:38lined down the right field line. It is a foul
- 1:07:40ball by a foot and a half. That had extra bases
- 1:07:45written all over it. Well, that time, Milk got
- 1:07:52out in front of a delivery by Nolan Ryan. A little
- 1:07:55too far. Normally you don't get around on Ryan
- 1:07:58that much. Oh, that was going to tie the game
- 1:08:05right there. Now the outfield has moved. They're
- 1:08:08beginning to move. Flores have been playing straight
- 1:08:11away on May, who is known as an up -the -middle
- 1:08:14hitter. And they're moving to the right on him
- 1:08:16now. They've opened up the gap in left center
- 1:08:17field. Actually in center field for Mills. A
- 1:08:201 -1 count on him. And set the pitch to May.
- 1:08:25He swings and misses. An off -speed breaking
- 1:08:27pitch that time. May now behind with a one -two
- 1:08:36count on him. Ryan, even with men not on base,
- 1:08:48has become a more deliberate pitcher this year.
- 1:08:51Here's the one -two pitch. Fastball is high.
- 1:08:53Two and two. Tigers seeing two of baseball's
- 1:09:02best, opposing them on the mound in this series.
- 1:09:05Ryan tonight, Tanana tomorrow. Tigers will counter
- 1:09:11with Dave Roberts tomorrow. Here's the 2 -2 pitch
- 1:09:14to May. Bends him back, ball three. Last ball
- 1:09:18around the nose. Mickey Stanley on deck. Last
- 1:09:32in the string of left -hand hitters that Ryan
- 1:09:34has to face in the Tiger batting order. Runners
- 1:09:38at second and third. Nobody out of three. Two
- 1:09:40count on Mills. The pitch from Ryan. Swung on
- 1:09:43and hit off the end of the bat toward third.
- 1:09:44Chalk charges. Looks at home. Can't go. There
- 1:09:46goes the first to get May. And the Tigers get
- 1:09:48a run home. Staying at second was Corcoran. The
- 1:09:52play right in front of him. Chalk took a look
- 1:09:54at the plate. Saw he didn't have a shot at Thompson
- 1:09:57who was going to score. And took a look over
- 1:09:59his left shoulder at Corcoran to make sure he
- 1:10:01wasn't trying to advance to third. Gritch was
- 1:10:03covering for him there. And he went to first
- 1:10:05to just nip May by a step. So Milk gets an RBI.
- 1:10:08The Tigers narrow the gap to 2 -1 and get on
- 1:10:11the board against Nolan Ryan. Corcoran still
- 1:10:15at second now. With one out on the batter is
- 1:10:18Mickey Stanley. Finally struck out, swinging
- 1:10:28his first time up. Grounder by May was just hit
- 1:10:36off the end of the bat. Here's the pitch. A little
- 1:10:39high to make you ball one. May looking for something
- 1:10:46with a little more speed that time, and he just
- 1:10:48barely caught the end of the bat with it. Dribbled
- 1:10:51it in the high infield grass. It's a brand new
- 1:10:53infield here at Tiger Stadium that the Tigers
- 1:10:55are coming back to. The set, the pitch, piled
- 1:11:00upstairs. It'll be behind first base in the upper
- 1:11:03deck. On the batting cage before the game, some
- 1:11:07of the Angels were commenting about the length
- 1:11:11of the grass on the infield, and I explained
- 1:11:13to them that it's a brand -new infield. The other
- 1:11:17had been taken out completely when the Tigers
- 1:11:18went off on their 10 -day road trip. balls down
- 1:11:30in the infield here. Outside for a ball. Two
- 1:11:37balls and a strike on Stanley. Corcoran at second.
- 1:11:39Thompson let off the inning with a single. Advanced
- 1:11:41to second on the single by Corcoran. Both moved
- 1:11:43up on a wild pitch. Mays bounce off the third.
- 1:11:47Brought in a run. a bit tonight with that strike
- 1:12:05zone. Got those good pitches that will keep the
- 1:12:09batters off balance. But he's also been a wee
- 1:12:13bit inconsistent. And patience is the order at
- 1:12:17the plate. There's ball four. Stanley draws the
- 1:12:20walk. Well, Mickey moves to first. Corkbridge
- 1:12:27is at second with one up. That's the fourth walk
- 1:12:32issued by Ryan. Tommy hit a soft fly to left
- 1:12:41his first time up. Stanley gets a good size lead
- 1:12:54at first. Jackson playing behind the runner there.
- 1:12:57One in the dirt. Good block by Humphrey. That
- 1:13:00one just simply was badly released by Ryan. It
- 1:13:03hit out in front of the plate, to the side of
- 1:13:05the plate. Humphrey made sure he blocked it.
- 1:13:14Now the pitch from Ryan. Reiser takes outside
- 1:13:16ball two. Time called. Humphrey is going to go
- 1:13:19out to have another word with his pitcher, Nolan,
- 1:13:21who is having trouble. That plate is swimming
- 1:13:24around on him in here. Comes Norm Sherry, the
- 1:13:27manager of the Angels, out to talk to Nolan as
- 1:13:30well. Well, Ernie passed along a card. Cosmo
- 1:13:47Potts out of Warren High School. He's got 58
- 1:13:51members of the Big Orange Warren High School.
- 1:13:54varsity club on hand tonight. The card on the
- 1:13:56card comes from George Steele. Good friend is
- 1:13:58the basketball coach out at Warren High. And
- 1:14:02now he and the old college spots are on hand
- 1:14:06with a large group of Warren High. Conference
- 1:14:15is over now. Norm Sherry's gone back to the dugout.
- 1:14:20Humphrey winding his way behind the plate. Tigers
- 1:14:23have runners at first and second. With one out,
- 1:14:25they've scored a run. A couple of singles. They
- 1:14:27bounce out on a walk so far in this inning. An
- 1:14:30activity now on the Angel bullpen. Scott and
- 1:14:34Drago. The pitch is taken for a strike. That
- 1:14:37one was right across the letters. It looked like
- 1:14:38Tommy was going to take all the way. Scott's
- 1:14:42a left -hander. Drago a right -hander. Loosening
- 1:14:45in the bullpen for California. The 2 -1 pitch.
- 1:14:49Swung on and popped up. Foul. It'll drift. back
- 1:14:52out of play. This one will reach the upper deck
- 1:14:55behind first base. Ron Jackson coming over to
- 1:14:59watch it disappear. Alvarizer waiting on Nolan
- 1:15:19Ryan. A 2 -2 count on him. One down. Two runners
- 1:15:22on the infield and double play death. Ryan Reddick.
- 1:15:28The pitch to Tommy. He swings and pops a foul
- 1:15:31into the upper deck behind the plate this time.
- 1:15:34A war between the mound and the plate continues.
- 1:15:43We're all looking forward to that big... Tonight,
- 1:15:46coming up Friday night, the 1977 debut of the
- 1:15:49bird, Mark Fidrich, against the new Seattle Mariners.
- 1:15:55Now a 2 -2 pitch to Beriser. Almost hit him inside
- 1:15:58with a floater. Foul count again. He has gone
- 1:16:01to that 3 -2 count so much tonight. On deck is
- 1:16:08Mankowski. One out. Runners at first and second.
- 1:16:13Here's the 3 -2 pitch. Ball four. The bases are
- 1:16:17loaded. A fastball up around the shoulders. It
- 1:16:21took off on Ryan. That's the fifth strikeout
- 1:16:24for Ryan. Tigers trail two to one. They've had
- 1:16:31the base runners. The Tigers have left four on
- 1:16:34base in the first three innings. Got a single
- 1:16:36from Mankowski in the first inning and a couple
- 1:16:38of walks in the second inning. Both runners stayed
- 1:16:40there. A walk in the third. has been able to
- 1:16:44be part of the batters just enough. Picking up
- 1:16:48six strikeouts here in the fourth. Singles by
- 1:16:51Thompson and Corcoran and the bounce off by May
- 1:16:54get a run home and the two to Stanley and Verizon
- 1:16:57load up the bases for Mankowski. A single and
- 1:16:59a walk for Phil tonight. Here's the windup by
- 1:17:02Ryan and the pitch. Strike. Call. Pitch by Ryan.
- 1:17:06Phil would like to see that one again. This is
- 1:17:15loaded with Tigers. They trail 2 -1. The pitch
- 1:17:19to Mankowski. Bends him away. 1 -1. Ryan doing
- 1:17:29a little scraping around. Taking plenty of time.
- 1:17:38Now leaning on the knees. Into the motion. Here's
- 1:17:41a 1 -1 pitch. Wide. into talk now with Ryan.
- 1:17:54And Draco and Scott continue to loosen the bullpen.
- 1:18:02Ryan had a one -hitter earlier this year. That
- 1:18:13was against Seattle. Bob Stinson got the only
- 1:18:16hit off him, a fifth -inning single, as I recall.
- 1:18:23Here's the 2 -1 pitch. Way out. Have that one
- 1:19:03to swing at, but by the same token, you've got
- 1:19:05to play the percentages. Chance to get a run
- 1:19:08in if he's just a little off. And he has been
- 1:19:11more than a little off here tonight. Here's the
- 1:19:14full count pitch to Lankowski. He swings and
- 1:19:17pops a fly ball foul down the left field line.
- 1:19:19It's slicing and no one will get it. It'll drop
- 1:19:22on the bullpen. Rudy and Gritch both giving chase
- 1:19:28down there. Neither could catch up to it. So
- 1:19:31we come. back again to load those bases up. Mankowski
- 1:19:35may have broken his bat on that one. He's blocking
- 1:19:38the handle in the dirt. Yep, Phil's going to
- 1:19:41need a new bat. Exciting moment here at Tiger
- 1:19:54Stadium. Tigers trailing at 2 -1. One out with
- 1:19:58the bases loaded. Ready to go again. Ryan Wines.
- 1:20:05Here's the pitch. Swung on. A ground ball. They
- 1:20:07make it two. The grits for one. They relay. Double
- 1:20:11play. And that's all for the Tigers in the fourth
- 1:20:13inning. A one -hopper ready -made to Jerry Remy.
- 1:20:16And they turn the double play 4 -6 -3. For the
- 1:20:19Tigers in the fourth inning, one run on two hits.
- 1:20:22They had a couple of walks. No errors. And two
- 1:20:25runners were left on base. So after four innings
- 1:20:28of play, it's now the Angels 2, the Tigers 1.
- 1:20:31Here's a WJI news update. Veteran Detroit talk

- 1:21:53It's the top of the fifth inning here at Tiger
- 1:21:55Stadium. John Hiller set to face the Angels.
- 1:21:57They score 2 -1, Angel. Ron Jackson, who drove
- 1:22:01in an Angel run on the second inning to lead
- 1:22:03it off. A wind -up by Hiller. Here's the pitch
- 1:22:07to Jackson. He takes a strike. A change -up by
- 1:22:12Hiller right off the bat. Right -hand batter.
- 1:22:19The pitch to him. Swung on and fouled up. Stairs
- 1:22:22behind the plate. Two quick strikes on Ron Jackson.
- 1:22:27It was the number two pick in the pre -agent
- 1:22:30draft back in 1971 by the Angels. Worked his
- 1:22:34way up through their system. Played outfield
- 1:22:37and third base primarily, but is now playing
- 1:22:40some first base for the Angels as he is tonight.
- 1:22:43A pitch to him. Swung on. Lined at Verizer. A
- 1:22:46stab by Tommy. A good catch. At the time of just
- 1:22:50right, that ball was taking off. Like a golf
- 1:22:52shot. And it was beginning to hook, too, so Tommy
- 1:22:57had to make quite a play on it. One down in the
- 1:22:59fifth inning. Here's Bobby Gritch, who sacrificed
- 1:23:05fly to center, drove in the run that is the difference
- 1:23:10in the game right now. The pitch to Bobby takes
- 1:23:13low and inside. Ball one. to the member of the
- 1:23:21California Ball Club. Shot and a miss. Understood.
- 1:23:30The Angels extended him, but he wanted to play
- 1:23:34in Southern California. High for a ball, 2 -1
- 1:23:37on Gritch. Ah, Hiller winds the 2 -1 pitch. It's
- 1:23:50low, 3 -1 on deck for California's Terry Humphrey.
- 1:23:53The Grinch won his fourth straight gold glove
- 1:23:56at second base last year, now making the conversion
- 1:24:00to shortstop this year. 3 -1 pitch to him, swung
- 1:24:04on, a fly ball lifted to center field. Stanley
- 1:24:06starts back. He's under it now. Mickey pounds
- 1:24:08the glove. He has it. Two down in the fifth inning.
- 1:24:12Nobody on, and in the batter will be Terry Humphrey.
- 1:24:23have been out. Heller settled down after giving
- 1:24:26up those two loop singles by Rudy and Bond for
- 1:24:29one solid hit by Jackson. After all, they've
- 1:24:32been able to touch killer four. But they have
- 1:24:36a two -to -one lead. The man from Chickasaw,
- 1:24:44Oklahoma, Terry Humphrey, waits and takes a called
- 1:24:47strike. The pitch to Terry. Check swing. It's
- 1:24:58low for a ball. A couple of seasons ago, you
- 1:25:04recall that Humphrey was seeing some action for
- 1:25:06the Tigers and had his season destroyed by George
- 1:25:10Brett in the collision at home plate. It's low
- 1:25:12for a ball. tiger right -hander has been placed
- 1:25:28on the 21 -day disabled list because of that
- 1:25:31bothersome stiffness in his right shoulder the
- 1:25:36date of the disability retroactive to may 20th
- 1:25:38that was the day after he started the exhibition
- 1:25:40game in cincinnati that was last thursday at
- 1:25:43cincinnati and mark pedry thus uh was made room
- 1:25:49for and mark is now an active member of the tigers
- 1:25:52he's been with them and very active but not officially
- 1:25:55so But he is now back on the 25 -man roster and
- 1:25:59ready to go. And his debut of the year is coming
- 1:26:02Friday against the Seattle Mariners. There's
- 1:26:07Tito Puentes, the leadoff for fifth inning for
- 1:26:09Detroit. Tito's been a little befuddled by Ryan
- 1:26:12so far, batting left -handed against Ryan. He
- 1:26:15has struck out both times. His old teammate at
- 1:26:18San Francisco, Bobby Bonds, was chiding him before
- 1:26:21the ballgame about it. High and wide for a ball.
- 1:26:23He said, how do you expect it? Pull the ball.
- 1:26:27He said he couldn't do it against Dick Krasuski,
- 1:26:29who was throwing batting practice. I expect to
- 1:26:31do it against Nolan Ryan. The pitch from Ryan.
- 1:26:34Punted towards third, but charged by Chalk. He's
- 1:26:36got it to throw the first, and he got it. Now
- 1:26:39that was punted right at Chalk, who was suspecting
- 1:26:41a punt. Charged in, and despite the high draft,
- 1:26:45was able to make an easy play out of it. He now
- 1:26:49has good bat control and has been able to get
- 1:26:51several punt singles. Between the third baseman
- 1:26:55and the mound. One out on the Tiger fifth. It'll
- 1:27:00bring up Rusty Staub. Rusty has struck out and
- 1:27:03hit a pop fly to left. Against Ryan, the wind
- 1:27:06-up by Nolan. He kicks and fires. Inside, around
- 1:27:09the knees. Ball one on Staub. on the mound. The
- 1:27:26pitch swung on a bounce to the first. Jackson
- 1:27:29waits for it, scoops it up, and trots to the
- 1:27:31bag to make the put -out unassisted on stop.
- 1:27:33There are two down. Let's pause for station identification.
- 1:27:36This is the Detroit Tiger Baseball Network. Checking
- 1:27:39the weather for greater Detroit. Fair to partly
- 1:27:41cloudy with widely scattered afternoon and evening
- 1:27:44thundershowers. Through Thursday, low to night
- 1:27:46in the mid -60s. Tomorrow and Thursday's high
- 1:27:49in the upper 80s. At half -past nine, it's partly
- 1:27:53cloudy and 75. This is WJR Detroit. There's Steve
- 1:27:57Kemp. Well, Steve has been a strikeout victim
- 1:28:00both times against Ryan. You saw a lot of Ryan
- 1:28:03when he was a youngster out in Southern California.
- 1:28:06Now he's batting against him high and wide for
- 1:28:09ball one. This is the first time he will have
- 1:28:11hit against Nolan Ryan. This ball game, that
- 1:28:14is. So far, he's been unsuccessful. Wiggling
- 1:28:19the bat to pitch to him. Low and inside, 2 -0
- 1:28:22on Kemp. Steve has really been swinging the bat
- 1:28:28well, upping his batting average to an even 300
- 1:28:31coming into the ballgame. 2 -0 pitch to him.
- 1:28:37He checks on a breaking ball inside at 3 -0.
- 1:28:43He's not given Steve much to really take a cut
- 1:28:47at. A lot of breaking balls and off -beat material.
- 1:28:52The pitch to him. It's low for ball four. So
- 1:28:56Kemp draws the walk, and that's the sixth base
- 1:28:59on balls issued by Ryan. He's also struck out
- 1:29:02six. And it'll bring up Jason Thompson with a
- 1:29:08walk and a single. Each club with three hits,
- 1:29:11but the Angels lead it 2 -1 here in the bottom
- 1:29:13of the fifth inning. They made a little better
- 1:29:15use of their scoring opportunities in this game.
- 1:29:20The only opportunities they had came in the second
- 1:29:23inning and made the most of them. A stretch by
- 1:29:29Ryan. Here's the pitch to Jason. Fastball is
- 1:29:32high. Ball one. Seattle now leads Cleveland 5
- 1:29:39-2 in the sixth inning across the lake in Cleveland.
- 1:29:43Boston ahead of the Yankees 4 -2 in the sixth
- 1:29:46inning in New York. A pitch to Thompson. There's
- 1:29:49a strike. A defender that caught the outside
- 1:29:52corner. Thompson didn't agree. Game moving along
- 1:29:55at Baltimore tonight. 1 -0 Baltimore over Milwaukee
- 1:29:58in the eighth inning. Jim Palmer working for
- 1:30:05the Birds. Strike two called. He worked him outside.
- 1:30:08That one was inside. Around the knees. Caught
- 1:30:11the inside corner. Moving it around on Jason.
- 1:30:23Ryan ahead of Thompson with a one -two count.
- 1:30:25Kemp at first, two down. And they tie your fifth
- 1:30:27inning. The pitch to Thompson. Swung on. A little
- 1:30:30pop -up in behind short. Gritch is calling for
- 1:30:33it on the edge of the grass. Makes the catch.
- 1:30:35That retires the side. No runs, no hits, a walk,
- 1:30:38no errors. One left after five innings of play.
- 1:30:41California 2, Detroit 1. Herbie delighting the
- 1:30:46audience after five innings here at Tiger Stadium.
- 1:30:48Ready to go in the sixth inning. Top of the batting
- 1:30:51order. The first pitch from John Hiller to Gil
- 1:30:53Flores. Taken for a called strike. And one trouble
- 1:30:59to many for Hiller. There's a tap foul rolling
- 1:31:02behind the plate. Two quick strikes on Flores.
- 1:31:05The second inning. Luke singles by Rudy and Bonds.
- 1:31:09Leave it off. Baylor is out on a pop -up. And
- 1:31:11Ron Jackson with a one -hop drive in the left
- 1:31:16center field to score a run. A sacrifice fly
- 1:31:18by Grich. Got another one home, and that's been
- 1:31:20it. A pitch from Hiller. Swung on. A fly ball
- 1:31:22to center field. Stanley starts back. Now drops
- 1:31:25in and makes the catch. One out in the Angels'
- 1:31:30sixth inning. That'll bring up Jerry Remy. Hiller
- 1:31:37has set down the Angels in order in the first,
- 1:31:40third, fourth, and fifth innings. Oh, except
- 1:31:45for that second. He's been letter perfect. Hiller
- 1:31:48winds, pitches to Remy. He shortens up, takes
- 1:31:50the strike. Got an offer on it. Got excellent
- 1:31:53speed, Remy does. Caused Mankowski to play in
- 1:31:58real tight, charge the ball. He's on the edge
- 1:32:00of the grass right now, actually. Sneaking in
- 1:32:03on the grass. Strike two called on Remy. 0 for
- 1:32:072 for Remy tonight. Left hand batter. Feet close
- 1:32:18together. The pitch from John. Swung on. Hit
- 1:32:20on the ground to the left side. Cut off by Mankowski.
- 1:32:22Guns the first he got in. That high grass of
- 1:32:27the infield slowed that one down just enough
- 1:32:29for Mankowski to get over and be able to cut
- 1:32:31it off in front of the riser. Almost needed to
- 1:32:35make the play that way because of the speed of
- 1:32:37Remy. Oh, they're two down, nobody on, and Dave
- 1:32:41Chalk at the plate, a right -hand batter. He's
- 1:32:45popped to second and popped to short. Killer
- 1:32:48ready, delivers. Little high that time, ball
- 1:32:51one. John's control has been excellent. He delivers.
- 1:32:59Strike called. Mixing his speeds well. Around
- 1:33:06that plate all the time. 1 -1 pitch to Chuck.
- 1:33:11He takes strike two calls. Here's the wind -up
- 1:33:21by Hiller. The 1 -2 pitch. Bounce foul. 13 straight
- 1:33:32batters have gone down against Hiller. Beginning
- 1:33:37of the string was the sacrifice fly by Grich.
- 1:33:39Cut and a miss, he struck him out. Third strikeout
- 1:33:42for Hiller, and again for the fourth straight
- 1:33:45inning, he sets the Angels down 1 -2 -3. Here
- 1:33:48come the Tigers to bat to give it a try on the
- 1:33:50bottom of the sixth inning with a score, California
- 1:33:522, Detroit 1. Ryan loosening up to face the Tigers
- 1:34:02here in the bottom of the sixth inning. John
- 1:34:03Hiller has pitched a superb ball game for the
- 1:34:05Tigers, with the exception of that one tough
- 1:34:08luck inning in the second where the Angels got
- 1:34:09their two runs and they lead it 2 -1. Ryan has
- 1:34:13been ultimately wild and accurate. He's kept
- 1:34:18the Tiger hitters off balance for the most part.
- 1:34:21The Tigers have left men on base in every inning.
- 1:34:24One in the first, two in the second, one in the
- 1:34:26third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth.
- 1:34:28Here's Tim Corcoran, who's single in the fourth
- 1:34:31inning. He's one for two tonight against Ryan.
- 1:34:37First pitch of the inning to Corcoran is a fastball
- 1:34:41high. Ball one on Tim. One more with the Angels,
- 1:34:49and then Seattle will come in for three this
- 1:34:51weekend, followed by Oakland and Cleveland, a
- 1:34:54nine -game homestand. Strike. That one called
- 1:34:58on Tim. It came in above the knees of the basketball.
- 1:35:06Not much wind here at the ballpark tonight. The
- 1:35:10Tim is taking a little though. Two and one. Ryan
- 1:35:14thought it was in. Had some rain this afternoon
- 1:35:17in the ballpark area. A little brief shower.
- 1:35:22Unloaded and moved on. 2 -1 pitch to Tim. He
- 1:35:28swings and fouls it against the screen behind
- 1:35:31the plate. Corcoran will be followed by May and
- 1:35:38Stanley here in the Tigers' sixth inning. The
- 1:35:44Angels came into the game tied for fourth in
- 1:35:47the Western Division with Oakland and Kansas
- 1:35:49City six and a half games behind the leader,
- 1:35:52Minnesota. The 2 -2 pitch to Corcoran. Inside
- 1:35:57and it bounced off the plate and up against the
- 1:35:59chest protector of Humphrey and bounced away.
- 1:36:02One of those full counts again. Irish -American
- 1:36:09night tomorrow night. There will be some special
- 1:36:12ceremonies prior to the game. We'll have Demolay
- 1:36:15night on Friday night when the bird makes his
- 1:36:17debut. The 3 -2 pitch to Corcoran. Swung on and
- 1:36:23fouled with the green. He spoiled one off. doesn't
- 1:36:38like the ball he got. Let me get a new one. Cochran,
- 1:36:46one for two tonight. Tigers will throw another
- 1:36:55left -hander against the Angels tomorrow night
- 1:36:57in Dave Roberts. And the Tigers will see one
- 1:37:01of the best left -handers in the business, Frank
- 1:37:03Tanana, on the lob against them. He's won seven
- 1:37:07times, lost but once. The pinch to Cochran. Swung
- 1:37:11on and fouled off the face mask to plate umpire
- 1:37:14Larry Barnett. That sent him staggering about
- 1:37:16three steps backward. Ooh, it jammed the mask
- 1:37:24up against his chin. Orion's fastballs and Cochran
- 1:37:29just barely kicked it. Enough to send it over
- 1:37:33the shoulder of Humphrey. Barnett not quite ready
- 1:37:39to be the arbiter yet. He wants to look around.
- 1:37:48See how things look before he puts that grill
- 1:37:51work back on his face. Check on the mask. Make
- 1:37:55sure it's all in one piece. Three balls, two
- 1:38:03strikes on Corcoran. Nobody out here in the sixth
- 1:38:05inning. Nobody on. Here's the pitch to Tim. All
- 1:38:10four. He walked him. There's the seventh walk
- 1:38:12given up by Ryan. Oh, the Tigers have had the
- 1:38:23runners. Are they at least walkers, maybe we
- 1:38:26should say. Seven of them. Ryan's had a couple
- 1:38:31of wild pitches. There's Milt May. Third baseman
- 1:38:37Dave Chalk is looking for the sacrifice. They
- 1:38:40pitch to the plate, taken for a called strike,
- 1:38:43and Milk gave no indication that he was going
- 1:38:44to bunt. Milk often takes that first pitch. Must
- 1:38:51have looked at what's being thrown. Now they
- 1:38:58pitch to him. Strike two called. And again, he
- 1:39:01didn't shorten up. The poke on May, according
- 1:39:07to the opponents, say that Milk will not bump
- 1:39:11very often. The stretch. There's the set on the
- 1:39:20two -strike pitch. Swung on a bouncer to the
- 1:39:22right side. Up with it is Remy. The second for
- 1:39:25one. The relay to first. Gets away from Jackson.
- 1:39:28Not far enough for May to advance. It was a poor
- 1:39:31throw by Grich. Hit in the dirt, so it'll go
- 1:39:34as a simple force out at second base at Corcoran.
- 1:39:44Well, there's one out with May at first base,
- 1:39:47and Mickey Stanley will be the batter. Baltimore
- 1:39:572 -1 over Milwaukee now in the ninth inning.
- 1:40:00The Brewers with their last chance at Jim Palmer.
- 1:40:08And the seventh at Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox
- 1:40:11leading the Yankees 5 -2. Seattle ahead of Cleveland
- 1:40:155 -2 in the sixth, but that's been out for some
- 1:40:17time. There's the set by Ryan. The pitch to Stanley.
- 1:40:24He cuts and misses. Strike one. Only three other
- 1:40:29games going in the American League tonight. Montreal
- 1:40:33involved in another long game today. The Expos
- 1:40:36winning it in extra innings in 13 innings over
- 1:40:39the Cubs 5 -4. The pitch to Stanley. Swing and
- 1:40:47a miss. He couldn't find that one. At Pittsburgh,
- 1:40:53the Pirates lead the Mets 5 -1 in the seventh
- 1:40:56inning. Philadelphia won the Cards nothing in
- 1:40:59the fifth inning at St. Louis. A couple of late
- 1:41:02starters on the West Coast in the National League
- 1:41:05this evening. Here's the stretch. The two -strike
- 1:41:09pitch to Stanley. It's outside and low, and Mickey
- 1:41:11held off. Tigers just four and a half games off
- 1:41:21the pace in the American League East behind Baltimore.
- 1:41:25Coming into the series with the Angels, who set
- 1:41:28the pitch to Stanley. He checked in time, fastball
- 1:41:31just outside, 2 -2 on Stanley. Now the stretch
- 1:41:50by Ryan. Here's the pitch to Mickey. Swings and
- 1:41:53lifts a foul into the upper deck on the right
- 1:41:55field side. Ernie got a letter today from Laura
- 1:41:58Kirchow of Saline, Michigan. She and the whole
- 1:42:01Kirchow family want to know who played third
- 1:42:04base and shortstop during the 68 World Series
- 1:42:07for the Tigers. Said to answer on the air. It
- 1:42:10was Don Word at third base, right? And Ray Euler.
- 1:42:14Well, Mickey Stanley played short during the
- 1:42:16series. That's right, during the season. Dick
- 1:42:18Krasuski and Ray Euler played it. There's the
- 1:42:27pitch from Ryan. Check swing by Stanley. Did
- 1:42:30he check in time? They're going to appeal, and
- 1:42:31he did check in time. Jim Evans, the first base
- 1:42:34umpire, supporting Larry Barnett's call behind
- 1:42:37the plate. Ooh, that was close. Stanley almost
- 1:42:40breaking the wrist on it. It's a 3 -2 count on
- 1:42:42Mickey. Ryan had had him swinging, missing on
- 1:42:46the first two pitches, and it's another full
- 1:42:48count. May at first base, one down. The pitch
- 1:42:58from Ryan, swung on, ground ball towards second,
- 1:43:01picked up by Remy. He'll tag the runner, May,
- 1:43:03for the first double play. Throwback to second,
- 1:43:05safe at second. Apparently they'd missed the
- 1:43:08tag of May. Flit, went down on the ground, did
- 1:43:13not go out of the base path. Remy could not make
- 1:43:17the tag and went on to first to get that one.
- 1:43:20They had to go back. The force was off. They
- 1:43:22had to go back and make a tag at May at second
- 1:43:24and missed him as he dove in safely. What happens
- 1:43:29is that it becomes simply a 4 -3 put out of Stanley
- 1:43:33at first base. Moving May to second. May did
- 1:43:43a good job. He was right on the base path. The
- 1:43:45ball fielded right there by Remy. And May came
- 1:43:49to a skidding halt, kind of went down low. The
- 1:43:53throw to first got Stanley in good shape. Here's
- 1:43:56Tom Beriser, the Tigers, with a runner at second
- 1:43:58in May. Trailing at 2 -1 here in the bottom of
- 1:44:01the sixth inning. Nolan Ryan looks back at second.
- 1:44:06The pitch to Tommy. Takes outside. Ball one.
- 1:44:10Beriser is fly to left and walked. Tigers have
- 1:44:17only three hits. So have the Angels. They've
- 1:44:22all been singles. The pitch. Strike. Fastball
- 1:44:26on the outside part of the play. Ryan into the
- 1:44:41stretch. The pitch to Verizer. He swings and
- 1:44:44fouls one into the upper deck behind first. Oh,
- 1:44:47it's a one -two count. The ball popping down
- 1:44:49toward the Tiger coaching box at first base.
- 1:45:01A ball and two strikes on Verizer with May at
- 1:45:09second and two away on the Tiger six. The pitch
- 1:45:12to Tommy is a curve on the outside corner. He
- 1:45:14struck him out. The first strikeout for Ryan
- 1:45:17since the third inning. But it ends the sixth
- 1:45:20for Detroit. No runs, no hits, no walks, no errors,
- 1:45:23and one left. After six innings, it's still the
- 1:45:26Angels two and the Tigers one. Well, we've got
- 1:45:35a tight one going here at Tiger Stadium. It's
- 1:45:37been interesting. It's primarily been pitching.
- 1:45:40They strike out from the walks of Nolan Ryan.
- 1:45:44And the excellent pitching of John Hiller, who
- 1:45:48got a little tough luck in the second inning
- 1:45:50when the Angels got both their runs on three
- 1:45:53hits, two of them rather tainted, and the sacrifice
- 1:45:56fly. It's the seventh inning for California.
- 1:46:00Joe Rudy will lead it off and back to the play
- 1:46:02-by -play. Here's Ernie Harwell. Thank you, Paul.
- 1:46:05This has been a good one. The Angels lead it
- 1:46:072 -1. Here's Rudy, who started the scoring in
- 1:46:10the second. And he swings and misses on the low
- 1:46:13outside fastball from the left -handed hitter.
- 1:46:16Only in that second inning have the Angels done
- 1:46:19anything. They got their three hits in that inning.
- 1:46:21And they scored their two runs. Everybody else
- 1:46:23has gone out in order in all the other innings.
- 1:46:28We put their three hits together. Here's a high
- 1:46:32-popped ball off the first base. Here comes May.
- 1:46:35Here comes Thompson near the seat. And it is
- 1:46:37just out of reach. Two rows in. Right at the
- 1:46:41corner of the angel dugout. One ninety four is
- 1:47:08the paid attendance just announced by Mr. Bill
- 1:47:11Brown on our intercom. Rudy waiting on a strike
- 1:47:14to pitch. Swings and fouls. One out of play.
- 1:47:24Well sometimes the pitcher the next day is charting
- 1:47:27pitches. I noticed Mr. Tanana is over there talking
- 1:47:30to a young lovely. In the corner of the dugout.
- 1:47:34He's not charting any pitches right now. There's
- 1:47:37a strike called. He struck him out. Rudy called
- 1:47:40out on strike. That's the fourth strikeout for
- 1:47:43Hiller. Bobby Barnes stepping in. He had one
- 1:47:50of the three hits in the second inning. A single.
- 1:47:53He also struck out on the fourth. It's a close
- 1:48:00one, 2 -1 California. The Tigers scored their
- 1:48:03only run in the fourth. Singles by Thompson and
- 1:48:07Corbin. A wild pitch moved them up. And then
- 1:48:11a bounce -off by May got the run in. There's
- 1:48:13a foul off the bat of Bobby Barnes. Back to the
- 1:48:16screen, strike one. Well, we'll see Dave Roberts
- 1:48:20and Frank Tanana here tomorrow night in the finale
- 1:48:22of the series. It's a curved low from Hiller.
- 1:48:27One and one. John has pitched a very fine game.
- 1:48:32But the Angels have to lead two to one. Swing
- 1:48:35and a miss by Bobby Bond. One ball and two strikes
- 1:48:39to count out. Milwaukee and Baltimore traded
- 1:48:42home runs in the eighth inning. Money hit one
- 1:48:44for Milwaukee for their first run and then Stingleton
- 1:48:47hit one for Baltimore. There's a little roll
- 1:48:49of foul over to Dave Garcia, the third base coach.
- 1:48:53Great history ahead on that game in Baltimore.
- 1:48:55The Orioles led 2 -1 in the ninth inning with
- 1:48:57Milwaukee batting in the first half of the night.
- 1:49:01Boston leads the Yanks 5 -2 there in the seventh.
- 1:49:05Cleveland has tied to Seattle. That's 5 -5 in
- 1:49:09the sixth. Here's a ball in close on Bonds. 2
- 1:49:13-2 the count on him. All three hits off Hiller
- 1:49:20have been single. Here's a bonding ball to short.
- 1:49:22Big hop for Verizon. They throw to Thompson.
- 1:49:25Plenty of time, and they are two down. Don Baylor
- 1:49:34will be the next man to bat now for the California
- 1:49:37Angels. Right -hand batting designated batter
- 1:49:40with a foul off the first with a pop -up to John
- 1:49:43Stopp. He took the ball to the air twice. Here's
- 1:49:52a little looper foul up this way out of play.
- 1:49:55Into the upper deck. And a gentleman from Toledo
- 1:49:59will take that one home with him. Baylor takes
- 1:50:09high for a ball. One and one the count of it.
- 1:50:12Two runs, three hits for the Angels. One run,
- 1:50:14three hits for the Tigers. One error to the Tigers.
- 1:50:19Didn't think in the store and there's a strike
- 1:50:21called he gets the fastball and above the knees
- 1:50:24wanted to unveil her Digging in standing deep
- 1:50:32waiting on Hillary's the next deliver here it
- 1:50:34comes. It's a change -up law on the account to
- 1:50:37do Mancowski defensive third the infield all
- 1:50:46the way back He takes the ball at the shoulder
- 1:50:50and close both down like a Britain ball And I
- 1:50:57didn't like that ball he wants another one from
- 1:50:59the umpire Barnett And we've seen this court
- 1:51:04that this year Barnett Evans got you on Springstead
- 1:51:09Here's the pit page up in the air Foul back a
- 1:51:15third. Mankowski racing. So is Barraza. Still
- 1:51:19going and nobody can get it. It falls into the
- 1:51:21bullpen. Barraza had the best shot, but it was
- 1:51:23just out of his reach. Over there where the ground
- 1:51:26crew sits. Long run for Tommy. He couldn't quite
- 1:51:30get there. Kemp had an even longer run. And it
- 1:51:35was tougher for Mankowski because he had to go
- 1:51:38straight back. At least Barraza had sort of an
- 1:51:42angle on the ball. And it fell among the three
- 1:51:47of them. Three -two, the count on Baylor. Wind
- 1:51:52up in the pit. Swing and a foul out of play.
- 1:51:56That one came back and hit May. Pittsburgh leading
- 1:52:01the Mets 5 -1 in the seventh. The Cardinals over
- 1:52:04the Phillies 5 -1 in the sixth. Montreal beat
- 1:52:08Chicago in 13 innings at Wrigley Field today,
- 1:52:105 -4. Other games are late starters. Here's the
- 1:52:14pitch. Taylor takes a walk. That's the first
- 1:52:17walk off Hiller. That one got away from him and
- 1:52:20hit in front of the plate. 16 in a row had been
- 1:52:24retired by John Hiller before that walk. They've
- 1:52:29not had a runner since Jackson is coming up now.
- 1:52:33But singled in the first run in the second inning.
- 1:52:45Baylor's a good base runner. He's got a team
- 1:52:47-sized lead over there right now. And it is a
- 1:52:51ball in too close on Ron Jackson. Up until this
- 1:52:59inning, the Angels had left only one man on base.
- 1:53:08Baylor's set, delivers. It's a ball outside the
- 1:53:11fastball. 2 -0 the count on it. Almost no breeze.
- 1:53:17Now it has died. Good night, the baseball. This
- 1:53:28is set. Run it goes. Pitches a ball. Oh, for
- 1:53:31the second. He is out at second base. Now he's
- 1:53:35called safe as Fuentes didn't hold the ball.
- 1:53:39They had him. And then Fuentes didn't hold the
- 1:53:42ball. Otago. gave the outside and then the safe
- 1:53:48side. It'll be an error charge to Tito Palletti.
- 1:53:55No stolen base. Jackson at the plate. Three and
- 1:54:06all the count. There's a let -up pitch to tie.
- 1:54:09It'll be two walks in a row now off Hiller. It'll
- 1:54:14be the second Tiger error. On that play, May
- 1:54:20will get an assist. And it goes to the record
- 1:54:23books as caught stealing. Doesn't make sense
- 1:54:26to me because he wasn't caught stealing. That's
- 1:54:28like giving a guy an out at the first baseman's
- 1:54:31office. Give him a... Here's Bobby Gritch up
- 1:54:37and he takes a strike call. But that's the way
- 1:54:40the rules are. Yeah, and I guess what they're
- 1:54:42doing is... Saying that may had him because the
- 1:54:46call was out. They don't want to have may charged
- 1:54:48with a signal Well, that's right. That's that's
- 1:54:52the logic of it. Sure. There's a strike called.
- 1:54:55He got a curve over Yeah, if you didn't have
- 1:54:59the problem of the catcher's record of stolen
- 1:55:02bases and caught stealing it wouldn't be there
- 1:55:05So that's a good explanation Two on, two out,
- 1:55:13and it's a strike. Cody stood there and watched
- 1:55:16that one go by. Struck him out. It's the fifth
- 1:55:20strikeout for Hillers. No runs, no hits. One
- 1:55:24error, two left. We go to the last half of the
- 1:55:27seventh inning. The Tigers come in the back.
- 1:55:29The Angels 2, Detroit 1. Hi, I'm Ernie Harwell,
- 1:55:33and I'm here with a couple of competitors in
- 1:55:35the prize for Plymouth Dealers Honorary Tiger
- 1:55:38Bat Boy Contest. Paul, how does this thing work?
- 1:55:41Well, any boy or girl between 8 and 14 can sign
- 1:55:44up in any participating personal permit dealer.
- 1:55:47Provided they are accompanied by a licensed driver
- 1:55:5018 or older. That's right. And there's no obligation
- 1:55:53for signing up. Then 22 Bat Boys will be picked
- 1:55:56on June the 2nd. Right, Katie? Right. 22 winners.
- 1:56:00One for each Chrysler Plymouth dealer. And everyone
- 1:56:03who signs up gets a free Tiger iron -on patch.
- 1:56:06Great. Well, that about does it. So, kids, grab
- 1:56:09your parents and stop into any participating
- 1:56:11Chrysler Plymouth dealer between April 18th and
- 1:56:13May 27th. And sign up for the Tiger Bat Boy contest.
- 1:56:18Thank you, Katie and Paul. And this is... There's
- 1:56:21one more thing. Yes, Katie? Shouldn't that be
- 1:56:25that person? Well, anyway, see your participating
- 1:56:29Greater Detroit Chrysler Plymouth dealer soon.
- 1:56:45For station identification, this is a Detroit
- 1:56:47Tiger baseball network. At 2 past 10, here's
- 1:56:49the weather for greater Detroit. Fair to partly
- 1:56:52cloudy with widely scattered afternoon and evening
- 1:56:54thundershowers through Thursday. Low tonight,
- 1:56:57mid -60s. High tomorrow and Thursday, upper 80s.
- 1:57:01Right now, it's partly cloudy and 75. This is
- 1:57:05WJR Detroit. Mankowski will try to get going
- 1:57:09for the Tigers here in the seventh inning. They
- 1:57:11trail 2 -1, each team with two hits. It's been
- 1:57:14a close one, a pitching deal between contrasting
- 1:57:18pitchers. Nolan Ryan and John Hiller. And each
- 1:57:23has done an excellent job. Ryan's been hobbled
- 1:57:28by control troubles, but he's overcome them.
- 1:57:31He's walked seven and struck out seven. Here's
- 1:57:33Mankowski. And he looks at a strike. Bill has
- 1:57:39a single. He's walked and hit into a double play.
- 1:57:41He double played in the fourth inning. Baltimore
- 1:57:45hung on to beat Milwaukee 2 -1, Palm of the Winter
- 1:57:48and Augustine to lose it. Here's a foul out of
- 1:57:51play. Got that pitch down on the hands and fouled
- 1:57:54it upstairs in section 16. Strike two, the count
- 1:57:58on Mankowski. Don't forget, the same two teams
- 1:58:03go at each other tomorrow night. Dave Roberts
- 1:58:05against Frank Tanana. Battle of left -handed.
- 1:58:07Hope you'll be out here with us. Here's the pitch.
- 1:58:11It's a ball in too close. Off day Thursday, the
- 1:58:15Tigers resume action Friday and do they resume
- 1:58:18it with the Bird making his 77 debut. Hidrits
- 1:58:21against Abbott. It'll be DeMole night. Tomorrow
- 1:58:26is Irish -American night at the ballpark. Ryan
- 1:58:29was ready, then he backed off the slab. Wanted
- 1:58:32to do the count on Mankowski. What a job he's
- 1:58:35done filling in for the injured Rodriguez. Both
- 1:58:37with the bat and the glove. Ryan making him wait.
- 1:58:42It's the one -two pitch. In too close to the
- 1:58:46hard curve. 2 -2 the count on Phil. Tiger three
- 1:58:56hits. Mankowski, Thompson, and Corcoran all singles.
- 1:59:01California three hits. Rudy and Bonds and Jackson
- 1:59:05all singles. Here's a fly ball, hit back at shortstop.
- 1:59:10Little pop by Gritsch going back. Rudy coming
- 1:59:12in behind him. It's Rudy, the left fielder, to
- 1:59:14make the catch. The Tigers have hit a lot of
- 1:59:17balls weakly up in the air. Popping into short
- 1:59:21left field. Not getting around on that fastball.
- 1:59:24And the left hand is hitting the opposite field,
- 1:59:26popping to short of the short left. Here's Fuentes.
- 1:59:29He struck out twice and bounced to third on the
- 1:59:32box. Left -hand batting Tito Fuentes against
- 1:59:44the hard -throwing right -hander Ryan. There's
- 1:59:47a strike. Looked as if he wanted the bump but
- 1:59:50didn't go for it. Chalk is charging in from third.
- 1:59:58Nolan Ryan, the young Texan, kicks and deals.
- 2:00:01It's a curve over but low. 1 -1 on Tito. Scoreboard
- 2:00:06Joe will follow our broadcast. Paul Carey will
- 2:00:09be here with all the scores. Be sure to stay
- 2:00:11tuned. Ryan in the motion. Catches. It's a ball
- 2:00:17and close. He's driving that curve again around
- 2:00:20the ankle. Two and one on 20. Ryan has walked
- 2:00:25seven and struck out seven. Miller has walked
- 2:00:28two and struck out five. He didn't walk anybody
- 2:00:29until the seventh when he walked two in a row.
- 2:00:33There's a fly ball to the center field. Backing
- 2:00:35up Flores. Still going. Still going. Reaches
- 2:00:37up and makes the catch on the run. Good. Good
- 2:00:41running catch by Flores. He was playing shallow.
- 2:00:44Tito got good wood on it and hit it fairly deep.
- 2:00:47So there are two down and that will leave it
- 2:00:50up the rusty star of the Tigers seven. Angels
- 2:00:53lead the Tigers two to one. That's about the
- 2:00:59longest ball the Tigers have hit tonight. Struck
- 2:01:12out. Hit a short par to the left and bounced
- 2:01:15the first base unassisted. Now Ryan checks his
- 2:01:22time with his catcher Humphrey. And Rusty takes
- 2:01:25a strike. Fastball over. Here's another strike
- 2:01:42that'll hit the inside corner on a check swing.
- 2:01:55California, a couple of games under the 500 mark
- 2:01:58overall, but at night, they are five over the
- 2:02:02500 mark, 17 and 12. Now, two -strike count on
- 2:02:07rusty stop. Two out, nobody on in the seventh.
- 2:02:10He takes a half -cut and holds it. It's a ball.
- 2:02:13The curve dipped in around the ankle. California
- 2:02:16two, Detroit one. We're in the seventh inning
- 2:02:19at Tiger Stadium. Angels got two on the second.
- 2:02:24Tigers got one on the fourth. All the six hits
- 2:02:27in the game have been singles. Three per side.
- 2:02:31There's a ball in close. Another curve. Two -two.
- 2:02:34The count on Rusty. Rusty trying to get over
- 2:02:39those back ailments. Still not 100%. Ryan checks
- 2:02:48his sign again. The 2 -2 pitch is on the way.
- 2:02:51He swings and strikes out. Curveball pulled in.
- 2:02:54That is the eighth strikeout for Nolan Ryan.
- 2:03:00No runs, no hits, no errors, and nobody left.
- 2:03:03At the end of seven, the Angels 2, Detroit 1.
- 2:03:07When Doug McAnally goes to work as a roustabout
- 2:03:10in the Yates -Oral Field in West Texas, he doesn't
- 2:03:13work alone. He gets together with other marathon
- 2:03:16men like Leon Gentry, Phil Lemons, and Ernie
- 2:03:19Galindo, and together they go about the business
- 2:03:22of getting crude oil out of the ground. Doug
- 2:03:24McAnally could work alone, but the job wouldn't
- 2:03:27get done as well, or at all, without the help
- 2:03:30of Leon, Phil, and Ernie. Because each of them
- 2:03:33can do something the other one can't. So they
- 2:03:35get together to do it better. A company's like
- 2:03:38its people because it is people. When Marathon
- 2:03:42found oil, our oil people got together with some
- 2:03:45pipeline people who got together with some refining
- 2:03:48people who got together with some service station
- 2:03:50people so we could do it better. Marathon Oil
- 2:04:08Company. We got together to do it better. Hi,
- 2:04:13this is Frank Beckman. Glad you joined the club
- 2:04:15on Radio 76. Just a reminder that whether it
- 2:04:18happened on or off the field, we'll have it for
- 2:04:20you on the sports final. Evenings at 11 .15 on
- 2:04:23WJR. Here come the Angels to bat now. The eighth
- 2:04:37inning, they're leading the Tigers 2 -1. It'll
- 2:04:39be Humphrey, the former Tiger, batting number
- 2:04:42nine in the California order now. He's 0 -2 tonight
- 2:04:45against his old battery mate, John Hiller. Bounced
- 2:04:49to short and bounced to third in his two trips.
- 2:04:53Angels are 3 -7 this year against left -handed.
- 2:04:56Here's a bottom attempt by Humphrey at the back
- 2:04:58of the plate foul. However, they've won three
- 2:05:01out of the last four against left -hand pitching.
- 2:05:05In theory, you'd think that a catcher could hit
- 2:05:08an old battery mate about as easy as anybody
- 2:05:11because he's caught in. Very familiar with his
- 2:05:15repertoire, what he might throw up there and
- 2:05:18how he does it. Here's a bounding ball to third.
- 2:05:24Mankowski gobbles it up. They throw to Thompson.
- 2:05:26Gets him. And there's one away. Coach is working
- 2:05:35in the bullpen now and so is Drago. Going on
- 2:05:44the same theory we mentioned. He might think
- 2:05:45while the catcher could hit that on anybody because
- 2:05:47he sees the ball come up there the same way all
- 2:05:49the time. Same way as the batter would. But it
- 2:05:56doesn't seem to work that way. Here's Flores,
- 2:05:58the leadoff man. And he backed off from a changeup
- 2:06:01ball one. Flores has bounced the first, popped
- 2:06:04it short, and hit a fly ball to Stanley in center.
- 2:06:07Two to one, the Angels lead. We're in the eighth
- 2:06:09inning. There's a check swing. Let's see if it's
- 2:06:11a strike or ball. Yep, the first base up for
- 2:06:14Evans as he went through on that one. One and
- 2:06:16one to count. Here's a foul fly out of play.
- 2:06:28It'd be interesting to know how many. Times out
- 2:06:32of ten, for instance, that an umpire first to
- 2:06:35third rules the striker ball. I'd say most of
- 2:06:39the time he doesn't say he goes across. Here's
- 2:06:45a one -two pitch now coming up to Flores. It
- 2:06:48is in the dirt, bouncing away from May. Two -two,
- 2:06:51the count on Gill. Well, the Yankees bumped in
- 2:06:57with four in the seventh inning. We now need
- 2:07:02six to five over Boston at the end of seven.
- 2:07:06Here's a ball low. Three -two pitch. Swung on,
- 2:07:18base hit, left field. Soft line drive over shortstop,
- 2:07:23and that will be the fourth hit for the Angels.
- 2:07:27And the first one off Hillers. He allowed three
- 2:07:30in the second inning. Jerry Remy, left -handed
- 2:07:35batting infielder, stepped up now. Seattle and
- 2:07:46Cleveland in the eighth inning. They are deadlocked
- 2:07:48at 5 -5 over there. by Hiller over the first
- 2:08:05base. The runner back in time. Steve Gurley starting
- 2:08:08to heat up in the Tiger bullpen. In close to
- 2:08:14the curve. Backed him away. Mankowski playing
- 2:08:17inside the bag at third. Almost to the intergrass.
- 2:08:21Well, he's really to it, but they've got it cut
- 2:08:23out over there at third base. On this diamond.
- 2:08:27Brown crew's done a good job on the newly made
- 2:08:32infield. There's a little pop. ball off a third.
- 2:08:34Mankowski backing up. He's there. He has it.
- 2:08:38And a runner goes back to first base safely.
- 2:08:42Flores. He was way down the line. I don't think
- 2:08:44Mankowski realized that. And I really don't know
- 2:08:50what Flores is running for anyway. The ball was
- 2:08:53fouled and he didn't die. I don't know what he
- 2:08:57was doing down for close to second base. anyway,
- 2:09:02got back and they're two out. And the batter
- 2:09:06will be Dave Chalk. Chalk over three against
- 2:09:13the left -handed heller. He's popped the second,
- 2:09:17popped the short, and the last time up, took
- 2:09:19out. There's a ball, though. Good stop by May.
- 2:09:27That ball hit in front of the plate. Houston
- 2:09:57and LA, no report on that one. Atlanta and San
- 2:09:59Diego, no report on that one. And the pitch.
- 2:10:05He takes ball high for the first. They've got
- 2:10:08him in a run down. Flores. Thompson throws into
- 2:10:11Fuentes and makes the tag and he's out. The catcher
- 2:10:15to the first baseman and second baseman retiring
- 2:10:17to the side. No runs. One hit, no errors, and
- 2:10:20nobody left on base. And at the end of seven
- 2:10:23and a half innings, California 2, Detroit 1.
- 2:10:27Okay, let's put a few nickels in the machine
- 2:10:29here and see what comes out. Ed Strasser weaves
- 2:10:37patterns in music, Sundays on Radio 76. Do you
- 2:10:44remember Bobby Sox, Lindy Hops, and warm summer
- 2:10:48nights? Remember joining the gang at your favorite
- 2:10:51hangout? Remember 78s and more big bands than
- 2:10:56you could count? Remember Pearl Harbor and Omaha
- 2:11:00Beach, V -Mail and VJ Day? And from all indications
- 2:11:04we got, there's a lot of tape being used this
- 2:11:07morning on tape machines as folks try to capture
- 2:11:13some of these things that are pretty hard to
- 2:11:14come by anymore. Patterns and Music, Sunday morning,
- 2:11:248 p .m. to noon on WJR. Tigers need instant runs.
- 2:11:42They trail two to one. Ryan has not been as sharp
- 2:11:48as he often is, but he's been tough. He's had
- 2:11:51his strikeout pitch working. He's fan eight.
- 2:11:53He's walked seven. He's allowed three singles,
- 2:11:57and the Tigers touched him for a run in the fourth
- 2:12:00inning. Now they'll send up Kemp, Thompson, and
- 2:12:04Cochran, the three left -hand swinging Californians.
- 2:12:09In the middle part of the batting order. Kemp
- 2:12:12is struck out twice. Walks his last trip. Vance
- 2:12:20trying to clap up a rally here in the Tiger 8th
- 2:12:23inning. 2 -1 California. Ryan's gone all the
- 2:12:26way. Kirkwood and Drago in the bullpen for the
- 2:12:28Angels. There's a high foul. It'll be out of
- 2:12:32play. Drifting into the upper deck. Back of the
- 2:12:37tiger dugout. Now bounce down right in front
- 2:12:39of the tiger dugout. Strike one. McCown on Kemp.
- 2:12:46See you out here tomorrow, others. Enjoy big
- 2:12:48league baseball. Sports best bargain right here
- 2:12:52at Tiger Stadium. And on Friday, the bird comes
- 2:12:56back into action facing Seattle. Here's the strike
- 2:13:00one delivery. Kemp takes the ball wide. The one
- 2:13:03and one, McCown on it. It'll be Roberts and Tanana
- 2:13:08pitching tomorrow. A duel of left -handers. Here's
- 2:13:15the motion and the one -one delivery. Fastball
- 2:13:18on the inside corner. Oh, Kip didn't like that
- 2:13:21one. It almost hit him. And I think that's about
- 2:13:24as hard as Ryan is thrown tonight. One and two.
- 2:13:29The count on Steve Kemp. He's walking around
- 2:13:31in a circle now to the first base side of the
- 2:13:34plate. Left hand on his hip. Holding the bat
- 2:13:38in his right hand. Not quite ready to get back
- 2:13:40in. Leading it off on the eighth. Against Nolan
- 2:13:44Ryan. Steve kept waiting. And the pitch. He swings
- 2:13:48a little roll at the first base and go foul.
- 2:13:51Love down there by Jackson and foul territory
- 2:13:54right in the coach's box. We've got a final now.
- 2:14:02Pittsburgh beats the Mets. Five to two. Royce
- 2:14:06the winner. One and five. Matlack takes the loss.
- 2:14:08He's three and four. The Pirates defeat the New
- 2:14:13York Mets. That's our first night final from
- 2:14:19the National League. One and two. The count on
- 2:14:22Steve Kemp. And the pitch on the way. He swings
- 2:14:26and misses. Got him on a fastball. The ninth
- 2:14:30strikeout for Nolan Ryan. Jason Thompson will
- 2:14:37bat now. He's walked, mingled, and popped the
- 2:14:39shortstop. Tigers' only run came in the fourth
- 2:14:43on a single by Thompson, a single by Carpenter.
- 2:14:46They moved up on a wild pitch, and then Thompson
- 2:14:49scored when May hit a ground ball to third baseman
- 2:14:51Shaw. Stanley walked on all the bases, but after
- 2:14:56the walk to Verizon, Mankowski hit into a double
- 2:15:01play. They walk to the riser that loaded the
- 2:15:05bases and then Mankowski hit in the double play.
- 2:15:08Ball went outside on Jason. Ryan ready, winds
- 2:15:14and delivers and Thompson swings it. They pop
- 2:15:17up foul back a third. Josh chasing. He's there
- 2:15:20and he has it for the out. Two down, nobody on.
- 2:15:25The Tigers still can't get to Nolan Ryan. Young
- 2:15:30Sam Corcoran will be the batter. He's fly to
- 2:15:33left, single and walk. One for two for Tim. Wearing
- 2:15:42Norman Cash's old number, 25. Corcoran got his
- 2:15:49start in Bristol and Lakeland in 74, then Montgomery
- 2:15:52the next two years, and he started this year
- 2:15:54at Evansville. Swings and fouls it away. Out
- 2:16:00of play back at third. Tigers signed him as a
- 2:16:03free agent off the California State at Los Angeles
- 2:16:06campus. Tim spreads out at the plate. Ryan delivers.
- 2:16:17There's a ball outside. He fed him a fastball.
- 2:16:19One and one to count on Corcoran. Tigers had
- 2:16:24a single in the first inning, and then back -to
- 2:16:27-back singles in the fourth. They've not had
- 2:16:28a hit since then. And a pitch. Swing. Fly ball.
- 2:16:32Left field. Rudy going over to his right. And
- 2:16:35makes the catch. He fell down, but held onto
- 2:16:38the ball. It looked as if he might be having
- 2:16:40trouble with the light or something, or maybe
- 2:16:42he just slipped. Anyway, he caught it, and it
- 2:16:46almost got past him. No runs, no hits, no errors,
- 2:16:50and nobody left. We go to the ninth inning. California
- 2:16:522, Detroit 1. You're the designated hitter in
- 2:16:59the Labatt's baseball trivia game. Here's the
- 2:17:02pitch. Which Yankee batter holds the team mark
- 2:17:06for the highest batting average in a single season?
- 2:17:10Think it over over a cool, refreshing Labatt's
- 2:17:13Blue. The highest batting average in the season
- 2:17:22for a Yankee is held by the Bambino himself,
- 2:17:26Babe Ruth. He hit .393 in 1923. Great moments
- 2:17:32in sports. Everybody has their favorites. Great
- 2:17:35baseball calls for great beer. Labatt's Blue.

- 2:18:22Jocko laid it off in the California ninth inning.
- 2:18:24The Angels ahead with two runs, four hits, and
- 2:18:26no errors. The Tigers have one run, three hits,
- 2:18:28and two errors. Jocko for three. He was at bat
- 2:18:31when Flores was caught off first base during
- 2:18:34the eighth inning. Left -handed, Hiller delivers.
- 2:18:37It's a foul out of play off the middle of May.
- 2:18:40Hiller has been brilliant tonight. There's no
- 2:18:42question about that. Two Texas League singles
- 2:18:45set up for scoring in the second inning. Rudy
- 2:18:48led off with one, then took the second on the
- 2:18:50single by Bond. Both the same variety. And then
- 2:18:52after Baylor fouled out, Jackson single in the
- 2:18:55run and the sacrifice by Gritt got in the other
- 2:18:57one. Here's a fly ball to right center. Stanley
- 2:19:00digging, dives, and he can't come up with it.
- 2:19:03Chalk makes a big turn, scoots on back to first
- 2:19:05base. Great effort by Stanley. Got his glove
- 2:19:08on the ball, but as he slid, it got underneath
- 2:19:10him for a base hit by Chalk. That'll be the fifth
- 2:19:15hit off Hiller. Rudy's always been a very tough
- 2:19:24hitter against the Tigers stepping in right hand
- 2:19:27batting outfielder Kirkwood and Hartzell are
- 2:19:43throwing in the bullpen now for California the
- 2:19:46Tigers have Gurley back in their bullpen Going
- 2:19:51to work. Now, time called by the first base umpire,
- 2:19:54Jim Evans. Here's Rudy stepping in. And he bumps
- 2:20:13the ball down toward third base. Shielded by
- 2:20:15Herb. Comes off the mound. Gloves it close to
- 2:20:17who it is covering the bag at first. It is a
- 2:20:20sacrifice. Moving chalk to second. Manager Norman
- 2:20:24Cherry trying to play for that one run at a time.
- 2:20:28He's got a one -run lead. He'd like to get another
- 2:20:30one. Runs have been hard to come by for each
- 2:20:34team in this game. That'll be a sacrifice. The
- 2:20:38player will go. The pitcher to the second baseman
- 2:20:40covering the bag at first. Looks like they're
- 2:20:47going to put him on. Bobby Barnes won't get a
- 2:20:51chance. They'll walk in with the first base open.
- 2:20:57Choosing to pick today's Baylor and try to get
- 2:20:59the double play. Crawford begins to heat up in
- 2:21:06the bullpen now alongside Steve Gretting. All
- 2:21:10these Tigers have a right -hander and a left
- 2:21:11-hander throwing out there. And the walk is being
- 2:21:16given now to Bobby Bond. There's ball four. That'll
- 2:21:22be the third walk issued by Hiller. Baylor has
- 2:21:28this batting record so far. He's fouled a first,
- 2:21:31popped a shortstop, and drew a base on ball.
- 2:21:34Angels 2, Tigers 1. Night sitting, the Angels
- 2:21:37threatening against Hiller. They've got two men
- 2:21:40on and one man down. Only in three innings have
- 2:21:46they had any runners. Here's a strike on the
- 2:21:50inside corner. The Yankees lead Boston in the
- 2:22:02ninth at New York six to five. Set and the pitch.
- 2:22:08He swings and misses on a high hard one toward
- 2:22:11the outside. This one's been close all the way.
- 2:22:17Two for California in the second. The Tigers
- 2:22:18bounce back with one on the fourth off Nolan
- 2:22:20Ryan. And it has gone scoreless since then. In
- 2:22:25the ninth inning, now Hill is trying to set him
- 2:22:27down. One out and two on for the Californians
- 2:22:31in the set by John. The left hander looks to
- 2:22:34the second. He pitches. Change up. Pop the mirror.
- 2:22:37Back goes Thompson. He's there. Infield fly rule
- 2:22:41is called. He makes the catch. The runners hang
- 2:22:43on. That will bring up one yesterday. Right -handed
- 2:22:53batting first baseman. Who's singled in the game's
- 2:22:57first run to second. He's one -handed to the
- 2:23:00red. And jumps up to the fifth. And he's going
- 2:23:02to walk to the seventh. The Phillies in the ninth
- 2:23:15inning cover the Pirates come about the next
- 2:23:17day don't do it There's a high foul out of the
- 2:23:21ballpark Way over the grandstand back at their
- 2:23:25base That one may come on Jackson Second bonds
- 2:23:41of a big lead at first base that stopped the
- 2:23:44plane behind him and Jackson. When he starts
- 2:24:03goes out with a philosophy that he'll throw as
- 2:24:07hard as he can for as long as he can. And so
- 2:24:11far, he's gone into the ninth inning. John checks
- 2:24:17his time with Milton May and the pitch. Swung
- 2:24:19on as a long foul fly. Deep left field, way back
- 2:24:24upstairs. Scrambling around in section 10 for
- 2:24:32that one. Two on, two out. Strike two. The count
- 2:24:41on Jackson. Here it comes. The swing to the bounding
- 2:24:48ball to Barrager. Deep short. Charges it. Gloved
- 2:24:50it. Throw to first. In time. High throw. Thompson
- 2:24:53reached up and gloved it. Hiller out of trouble
- 2:24:57in the ninth. No runs. One hit. No errors. Two
- 2:25:00left. On hand for John Hiller. He comes in. A
- 2:25:03magnificent pitching performance. And the goal
- 2:25:06the last half of that inning. Angels 2, Tigers
- 2:25:081. We'll be right back. We'll be right back.
- 2:26:23Briefness of station identification. This is
- 2:26:25a Detroit Tiger baseball network. Look for fair
- 2:26:27to partly cloudy weather with widely scattered
- 2:26:29afternoon and evening thundershowers through
- 2:26:31Thursday. Low tonight in the mid -60s. Tomorrow
- 2:26:34and Thursday's high near 90. At 1030, it's clear
- 2:26:38and 70. You're listening to WJR Detroit. Bilt
- 2:26:45Mayer to lead off on the ninth against Nolan
- 2:26:47Ryan. He's gone all the way in this duel with
- 2:26:50John Hiller. He holds the upper hand. Two to
- 2:26:53one, the Angels. May drove it around with a bounce
- 2:26:57off the third and the fourth inning. He walked
- 2:26:59from the second his last time up and made a sixth
- 2:27:02inning hit in the fourth half. Ryan has stepped
- 2:27:04down in the last nine Tigers in a row. Left -handed
- 2:27:08batting, milkman at the plate. And he takes a
- 2:27:11strike, a high, hard one. Strike one, the count
- 2:27:15on milk. Stanley and Verizon are scheduled to
- 2:27:19follow in the Tiger 9th inning. Ryan rocks some
- 2:27:25pitches and May takes a strike. Boy, I didn't
- 2:27:28like that call by the plate umpire, Barnett.
- 2:27:36Strike two, the count on nil. Ryan's walked seven,
- 2:27:41he struck out nine. The wind up, the pitch. Fastball
- 2:27:47wide way outside. He let that one fly. Foucault
- 2:27:52throwing in the Tiger bullpen. Hartzell throwing
- 2:27:55in the California bullpen. Now the one -two delivery
- 2:28:01with May leading off of the Tiger night. He swings
- 2:28:06and this is struck him off. Now that's ten strikeouts
- 2:28:10for Ryan. And he goes one up on that record now
- 2:28:14that he had tied Sam McDowell. Well, maybe that's
- 2:28:2110 -plus. Maybe they mean 11 by then. I guess
- 2:28:24you do. You've got to get one more before you
- 2:28:26can break McDowell's record of 74. I heard with
- 2:28:30McDowell. I think what they mean is double figures,
- 2:28:3210 or more. I'm willing to give it to him. Here's
- 2:28:39Stanley. That's 10 in a row for Nolan Ryan. Mickey
- 2:28:44takes a strike. Fastball at her high. Ryan tried
- 2:28:56to hold off the Tigers. Ron LaFleur has come
- 2:28:59to the on -deck circle to bat for Verizon. One
- 2:29:02out of the Tiger Knight fitting. Here's a strike
- 2:29:06on the outside corner. Seems as if Ryan sniffs
- 2:29:14the old victory here. He's getting tougher. Putting
- 2:29:20it all together. 2 -0 on the Angels' lead, ninth
- 2:29:25inning. Nolan into action again, and the pitch.
- 2:29:29Swing and a miss. He struck him out. He just
- 2:29:32blew it past him. Now that's 11. But 75 times
- 2:29:41he's had more than 10 to break the old record
- 2:29:45that he shared with Sam McDowell. Now Ron LaFleur
- 2:29:48is the Tiger hope as he steps in. LaFleur batting
- 2:29:55.238 in 33 games. Humphrey goes out to talk with
- 2:29:59his pitcher. Tigers have had not too many chances
- 2:30:06against Nolan. They left a couple of runners
- 2:30:12on in the fourth inning when the inning ended
- 2:30:15in a double play after they'd scored a run. That
- 2:30:19was their best shot at the fireballing right
- 2:30:22-hander. Here's LaFleur at the plate against
- 2:30:26Nolan Ryan. 2 -1 Angels, ninth inning. He backs
- 2:30:31him away. Ball one, the count. Mankowski waiting
- 2:30:36on deck, hoping that LaFleur can keep the game
- 2:30:39alive. Batting for Tommy Verizon. And he takes
- 2:30:44the ball outside. Taking all the way. Eleven
- 2:30:49in the row have gone down before Nolan Ryan.
- 2:30:58Wind up from the pitch. It's in for a strike.
- 2:31:01He got the outside corner. Two and one on Ron.
- 2:31:06Ryan's thrown a lot of pitches tonight. They've
- 2:31:08had that full count quite a few times. But he
- 2:31:13has been tough when he's had today. Now not quite
- 2:31:17ready, and LaFleur decides he'll step away from
- 2:31:20the plate. Back in now. Here's the motion by
- 2:31:23Nolan Ryan of the pitch. Swing and a ball upstairs.
- 2:31:27He got a piece of that one, and that was all.
- 2:31:292 -2, the count on LaFleur. Ryan struck out three
- 2:31:35in the opening inning after a lead -out single
- 2:31:38by Mankowski. And he's trying to get three strikeouts.
- 2:31:43In a row here in the ninth. The climax is pitching
- 2:31:47performance tonight. Two to one, the Angels lead.
- 2:31:50Two down, the body on. And the pitch. It's a
- 2:31:54ball outside. He checks his swing. Full count.
- 2:32:01Now Ryan looking back at the outfield. They're
- 2:32:04around the right on Ron LaFleur. Waiting on a
- 2:32:093 -2 delivery. Here it comes. He swings and misses.
- 2:32:12The game's over. And California wins the opening
- 2:32:16game of the series. 12 strikeouts for Nolan Ryan.
- 2:32:20He struck out the side. 1 -2 -3 in the ninth
- 2:32:23inning. And the final score, the Angels 2, the
- 2:32:25Tigers 1.
